Two pals from Plymouth are planning to paddle more than 100 miles in kayaks to raise awareness about mental health and autism.

The Friends of Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery (FPCMAG) have donated £2500 to The Box for its first-ever work by a Native American artist.

The funding is for a ceramic cooking pot based on the historic designs that would have been used inside traditional Wampanoag dwellings in the 1600s.

The pot will be one of the many items on display in The Box’s ‘Mayflower 400: Legend and Legacy’ exhibition when it opens in 2020, and is being made by Ramona Peters.

Peters, also known as Nosapocket, is a member of the Mashpee Wampanoag Nation. Working in partnership with Wampanaog cultural agency SmokeSygnals, she has already started developing the piece and is making great progress.

Once the ‘Mayflower 400: Legend and Legacy’ exhibition has finished, the pot will become part of The Box’s permanent collections.

Stefan Aloszko, chair of the Friends said: “We immediately recognised the greater cultural significance of Ramona Peters’ elegant Wampanoag cooking pot.

It’s a work that allows us to appreciate the universal importance of the shared bonds that we experience through culinary heritage and subsequent ideas of home, community and conversation.

“For the Friends, this piece is a most welcome addition to the city’s permanent collections.”

Members of the The Friends recently visited The Box’s construction site for a hard hat tour and officially presented a cheque to The Box chief executive Paul Brookes and exhibition curator Jo Loosemore.

Paul said: “The Friends of Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery have helped fund many important acquisitions for our collections over the years.

“We’re very grateful for their continued support, particularly for an object which is so symbolic and which will be a real legacy from our Mayflower 400 activities.”

Gareth Thomas, 40, who lives in Mainstone and 39-year-old Ben Partrick from Lipson, will set off from Mount Wise on May 18 and kayak along the Cornish coast arriving in Penzance a week later.

Gareth, who is a chartered surveyor with Balfour Beatty, and Ben, who works as a gas technician for Wales & West Utilities, have known each other for over 30 years. They were both born and grew up in Cornwall, but are now settled in Plymouth.

Their challenge was developed after a year of sea kayaking, including 18 miles on New Year’s Eve. Gareth said: “We both like to take on physical challenges while raising money for good causes. It started with the Eden Project

marathon in 2016 and has got increasingly more challenging.

“Last year we took part in St Luke’s Hospice ‘Tour de Moor’ which involved 70 kilometres of off road cycling and we followed that with the Holy Grit 24 kilometres beach obstacle event in Cornwall.

“We both feel lucky to be able to take on physical challenges and enjoy the training and planning that is required. It’s also important to both of us to give back to society by raising money for our chosen charities.”

The pair hope to raise at least £1,000 for Plymouth and District Mind and the National Autistic Society and they have already raised nearly £800.

Gareth said: “Mental health doesn’t only affect the individual with the illness it also impacts the lives of everyone around them.

“I know this first hand as in 2008 my older brother went missing after suffering mental health related issues. He has never been

Ben said that he had been involved in the care of a boy with autism for the last 12 years and had seen how challenging life could be for him. “There have been some amazing people helping him along the way. The care and education he gets at secondary school is second to none and none of that would be possible without the National Autistic Society.”

The locations of four new wildflower meadows in Plymouth, which help local bee and butterfly populations to thrive, have now been announced.

Plymouth City Council has identified four new sites across the city to establish new wildflower meadows, which will be prepared and planted this month, when ground conditions are good for sowing, and will be flowering by the summer.

The sites will be: Staddiscombe Road green space; Teat’s Hill; Delamere Road and Tamar Bridge roundabout.

They will also improve existing wildflower meadow sites at North Cross and Derry’s Cross to make them better for wildlife and add more colour to the local landscape.

Councillor Sue Dann, Cabinet Member for Environment and Street Scene for Plymouth City Council, said: “I am delighted to be able to announce the four new locations where we will be expanding our bee corridors and wildflower meadows in Plymouth.

“Bees play a crucial role in our lives including food production as they pollinate important crops.

“Wildflower meadows and bee corridors can provide an important source of pollen and nectar for pollinating insects, and habitat and food, directly and indirectly for many other species. They also have been shown to positively impact health and wellbeing as they are a beautiful addition to our urban landscapes.”

“The council has also been working with seed suppliers to develop a new, longer flowering seed mix that will be trialled this year.”

Further sites will continue to be identified by the council, working with local communities, that can be converted to wildflower meadows to expand the network of sites in coming years.

WALK IT EVENT IS RETURNING TO CITY THIS JULY

Plymouth is one of eight cities up and down the country staging the WALK IT event to raise funds and awareness for Crohn’s & Colitis UK.

Adventurer’s transatlantic challenge in support of St John Ambulance

Veteran British adventurer Sir David Hempleman-Adams has set sail from Plymouth on his greatest ever challenge – sailing solo across the Atlantic in support of St John Ambulance.

The record-breaking 62-year-old, who inspired the likes of Bear Grylls and Ben Fogle with his fearless expeditions, is following in the footsteps of one of his heroes by setting off from Queen Anne’s Battery on his Voyage of Discovery (www.sja. org.uk/discovery).

“As a boy, I was inspired by Sir Francis Chichester’s solo circumnavigation of the globe; he was the first man to take on that adventure and I vividly remember watching TV coverage of him sailing home into Plymouth Sound after 226 days,” said Sir David.

“He was a legendary solo yachtsman who had already crossed the Atlantic on his own twice, and he celebrated his 65th birthday at sea. I’m a few years younger than that and my voyage should take just over a month, so time is on my side, but I have never done

anything like this before.”

A relatively inexperienced sailor, he will be up against the high seas, unpredictable weather and feelings of loneliness and isolation for around 35 days.

He has described the prospect of undertaking the perilous journey as harder than climbing Everest, but he has been training hard and famous sailors Dame Ellen MacArthur and Sir Ben Ainslie have been advising him.

“Sailing to New York is going to be a real challenge for me, but I will keep the memories of Sir Francis’s achievements, and the fact I’m doing this to raise awareness of a great charity – St John Ambulance – that’s close to my heart,” Sir David added.

Sir David has been an advocate for St John for more than 25 years and a trustee at the volunteer-led health charity since 2012.

The charity’s chief executive, Martin Houghton-Brown said: “We are one of the few charities where younger and older people volunteer alongside each other with equal skills.

“I believe that Sir David’s courageous expedition will inspire many across the

generations to seek a new adventure for themselves.

“We are fortunate to have Sir David as an ambassador for our charity and his passion for St John is shared by our incredible volunteers, many of whom came to us on their own journeys of self-discovery.”

Often, St John’s volunteers are introduced to the charity when they learn first aid in schools, their community or in the workplace.

That experience opens the door to exciting opportunities and challenges; from becoming a first aider to keep people safe at high-profile events, as a youth leader teaching young people life saving skills – many of whom go onto become healthcare practitioners - or as a community first responder to support local emergency services.

As a volunteer for St John Ambulance, there is something for everyone regardless of age, experience or the time that they have.

This year the event starts and finishes on The Hoe on Saturday July 13 and organisers are hoping that the fabulous turn out last year will be repeated - or even bettered this year.

Last year a total of 230 walkers took part, covering either the 5km or 10km route around some of the city’s favourite locations. Their efforts raised a total of £11,000.

One of the walkers who took part in last year’s event said: “I just loved the whole atmosphere. My sister who has Crohn’s Disease was able to talk to others about it and they all knew how one another were feeling. It was such an enjoyable day.”

People can register as an individual or as a team and will receive a free t-shirt with the £14 registration fee. Children are £7 to register and they also get a free WALK IT t-shirt.

Walkers are being challenged to raise £100 or more - a sum which could help pay for 2,000 people to get the information they need about Crohn’s and Colitis.

Walkers will explore the city’s sights before returning to the event village at The Hoe for a great afternoon of fun, food and entertainment.

Organisers are also keen to hear from volunteers who can help on the day.

Phoenix Wharf article and some fascinating findings

I read with interest the article in the April Chronicle on Phoenix Wharf. When I visited my son in South Australia a couple of years ago we visited the Maritime Museum in Port Adelaide.

The exhibits were all about ships, boats etc associated with immigrants. There was a computer terminal for public use on which there were extensive listings on arrivals by ship.

We searched for any namesakes (Winsor) and came up first with what appeared to be a pair, a Henry Winsor aged 33, a carpenter from Devon and, next entry a Maria Winsor aged 27, with no further information.

Letter to the Editor They arrived on the barque Saltana having sailed from Plymouth, where the ship had lain at anchor in Barn Pool on November 4 1853, and landed in Port Adelaide on February 5 1854.

Similarly, there was a Charles Winsor, aged 26, an agricultural labourer. If I remember correctly, he arrived on the barque China having sailed from Plymouth on July 26 1852, arriving on November 12 1852.

There was lots of other information, such as births and deaths, mostly babies, during the passage and marriages. There were links to information on the ships: the Sultana

built in England only a few years before seemed to have run aground several times on this immigrant route and sank in Chinese waters.

Undoubtedly, the lists for the USA (entry Port New York) and Canada (Halifax, Nova Scotia?) both more extensive, are on-line.

My suggestion is that such a facility could be contained within the proposed Phoenix Wharf installation and in a prominent place with other major exhibitions.

I hope I’m not too late with the suggestion or that I am trying to teach granny to suck eggs!

To help celebrate all the Mayflower events during 2020, a team of local people have organised a competition to choose the Mayflower 400 Town Crier for Plymouth.

One of the organisers, Penny Tarrant said: “We’re looking for people who stand out in a crowd and would like to wear an elaborately embellished coat and a fantastic tricorn hat with plumes.

The position of Mayflower Town Crier is open to anyone from the Plymouth area who is over 18. The successful candidate will then publicise and attend Mayflower 400 events in Plymouth.

People interested in the role can apply through the website at www. mayflowertowncrier.co.uk. Closing date for applications is Thursday 16th May Applicants will be invited to attend a workshop, to discover what the role will involve.

They will have a chance to practice shouting, ringing their bells and creating their own individual messages.

The competition final will be held in Plymouth Guildhall on Thursday July 25. The event will be free and full of family fun, starting with Plymouth Morris Dancers at 6pm outside the Guildhall and the main competition starting at 7pm.

Each contestant will have an opportunity to perform three items on the Guildhall stage, in front of a team of judges. The audience will also vote for their favourite. Local Stonehouse band, Sound House Brass, one of the top brass bands in Devon, will provide a musical interlude.

Once the Mayflower Town Crier has been chosen, they will be provided with their own individually designed outfit, which will be made from upcycled material from Plymouth Scrapstore. They will be given guidance as they start out in their new role from experienced town criers from other parts of Devon.

this year at Improving Lives Plymouth’s Mannamead Wellbeing Hub. Nichola’s job as a biomedical scientist with the NHS became too much for her shortly after the birth of her baby. Chronic fatigue, pain and sensory overload were eventually diagnosed as fibromyalgia after she used her scientific skills to narrow down the options and ask her GP to confirm.

She found it hard to explain to her family, and was getting defeated by her inability to do the things she used to do until she was referred to the Long Term Conditions Self Management team. She joined nine others with a wide range of LTCs and received support from trained volunteers, most of whom live with long term conditions themselves and so have empathy for course delegates.

“It was a relief to be able to talk about my condition with others who had similar experiences,” she said. “It’s a safe place to find tools to manage life.”

People attending the courses (soon to be held in a wider selection of community

venues) can include carers as well as those with an LTC. During weekly, 3½ hour workshops, people gain skills to manage their condition; they set achievable goals, meet others and talk about their experiences.

For someone who is isolated and whose family can often become frustrated with them, the adaptable course can be life changing; it helps them to explain their difficulties to others in a way they can understand.

“The course helps you find ways to explain how you’re feeling to those who love you but often don’t get it,” said Nichola. “It gives you some hope that you are normal, just a different normal.

“I learned to set achievable goals for myself,” she said, “and to accept ‘that’s OK for me’; it helps you become more positive and kind to yourself.”

Long term conditions self management coordinator, Lorraine Grave said that they are looking to expand into more venues, so they need more volunteers. “Ideally volunteers will have their own experience of living with a long term condition; full training is given and we expect them to facilitate two, four week courses a year. The courses are very informal and rewarding - they really take the pressure off the delegates and help them find a better quality of life.”

Carpetright store to be converted into a gym Proposals to convert the former Carpetright store into a gym have been given the go ahead by Plymouth City Council planners.

The vacant 12,000 sq ft site on Cattewater Road will be taken over by The Gym, one of the country’s leading health and fitness operators. The company has more than 150 similar operations across the UK - including an existing gym in Plymouth City Centre.

The Gym provides a high quality but cheaper option for the health and fitness activity.

It requires a large floor space to accommodate the main gym equipment, while changing rooms, offices and storage space will be added.

The new gym will feature a range of cardiovascular equipment - rowing, running and cycling, as well as weights. The applicants say that it will provide a new facility for local residents as well as workers on the nearby Faraday Mill Business Park.

Ugly Mutley toilet block set to be removed

The unsightly toilet block on Mutley Plain is set to be removed.

Following consultation by local councillors with residents and business owners on the Plain, the toilets will be demolished and replaced with street furniture in time for the Mayflower commemorations in 2020.

It is hoped that removal the of the toilet block will encourage new businesses to occupy some of the vacant premises directly adjacent and improve accessibility for pedestrians along the pavement.

Councillor Mark Lowry, Cabinet member for Finance said: “We pledged to revive our shopping districts, with Mutley Plain being a focal point of this promise.

“The removal of these toilets comes alongside many other improvements to the area, including the introduction of one hour free parking in Mutley Barracks car park and art from local students livening up vacant shop fronts.

“These toilets are more than outdated; they attract anti-social behaviour and they’re an eyesore for business owners and customers alike.”

The cost of the removal of these toilets is £32,000, paid for from the capital budget. This project follows the recommendations of a crossparty working group, formed to tackle the issues raised by traders on Mutley Plain.

Soroptimists enjoy visit to former home of Lady Nancy Astor

A visit to the former home of Lady Nancy Astor on Plymouth Hoe was very meaningful to a group of Plymouth Soroptimists who enjoyed an interesting and informative afternoon at 3 Elliot Terrace.

Apart from being the first female MP to sit in the House of Commons, Lady Nancy Astor was also a great supporter of the Plymouth

Soroptimist club and close friend of its founder member, Dr Mabel Ramsey.

Plymouth’s Lord Mayor Cllr. Sam Davey welcomed the group, and the Mace Bearer led a tour of the house, all the while recounting facts and anecdotes about the contents of the house, the Astor family and some famous visitors to the terraced property which was gifted to the city by Lady Nancy Astor.

Recently appointed President of the Plymouth Soroptimist club, Jenny Jarvis, said: “It was a great pleasure and so interesting to look around the former home of such an influential and iconic woman.

“We learned so much from the visit and are really appreciative of the time the Lord Mayor and Mace Bearer spent with us.”

A ‘Sea Bin’ has been installed at Queen Anne’s Battery Marina in Plymouth as part of the city’s ongoing commitment to tackle plastic pollution.

Plymouth City Council is working with Queen Anne’s Battery Marina and the University of Plymouth to trial the Sea Bin and monitor collections of plastic and other waste, to determine how beneficial it could be in Plymouth.

A Sea Bin is a floating rubbish bin that can capture annually 90,000 plastic bags, 35,700 disposable cups or 16,500 plastic bottles. It is one of the latest projects to be developed to support the Plymouth, Britain’s Ocean City Plan for Plastics, led by the city’s Plastics Taskforce which is made up of a range of local partners.

Councillor Sue Dann, Cabinet Member for Environment and Street Scene for Plymouth City Council, said: “This is an exciting new project for Plymouth and we are happy to be working with local partners to tackle plastic pollution and to help protect our local marine life. Cleaning up and improving the quality of our oceans is especially important to us in Plymouth as we are aiming to be the UK’s first National Marine Park.

“This is one of the first few Sea Bins in the UK, so although others are in the pipeline, this really does mean Plymouth is at the forefront of using this innovative technology in the UK. “Marinas and Ports are ‘hots spots’ for litter that enter the system via users on the water, surrounding waterfront areas and by drifting in from surrounding seas driven by tides, currents and wave action. The installation of a Sea Bin has the potential to remove marine litter from a marina at a centralised point.

“If marine litter such as plastics are not removed then they will eventually sink and very slowly breakdown into microplastics creating further environmental issues.”

Chris Price, manager, Queen Anne’s Battery, said: “We’re delighted to install a Sea Bin at Queen Anne’s Battery. Currently our staff remove any debris out of the marina with a net, making sure that we do our part in keeping the sea clean, and obviously our berth holders and visitors happy.

“We’re going to locate the Sea Bin behind the pontoons. We’ll be there giving it a daily clean-out to make sure that any plastic, bottles, and bags etc are kept out of our beautiful waters.

“All of us are really excited about any innovation which helps the environment, we’re delighted that QAB has been chosen for this project.”

Professor Richard Thompson, head of the International Marine Litter Research Unit at the University of Plymouth, said: “The key solution is, of course, to stop allowing plastic waste to enter the sea in the first place. However, steps to remove litter effectively from the ocean are important too, and we are collaborating in the project to help evaluate the efficiency of this device.”

University of Plymouth student Liam Gibson, who will be monitoring the Sea Bin over the next few weeks, said: “Innovative developments designed to protect and enhance the environment are always welcome, the Sea Bin is no exception.

Given the nature of plastics in the marine environment, efforts to remove them are imperative. I’m excited to see what the Sea Bin will bring to Queen Anne’s Battery and Plymouth.”

There are four main principles in the Plan For Plastics, which are: Avoid - encouraging residents to avoid single use plastics, and to find alternatives such as reusable coffee cups Recycle - continue to work to increase recycling rates in Plymouth Innovate - support academic and industry led research into plastic free alternatives.

Connect - developing an education programme to encourage people to visit and connect with the natural environment.

The Sea Bin trial will report back at the end of September with some initial results. They will be used to determine what happens next but if it is successful there would be investigations into options for installing the bins in other areas across Plymouth’s waterfront. Top of Gill’s bucket list - a Stobart truck ride!

A former Petty Officer with more than 12 years’ service in the Armed Forces attended a special event at HMS Drake where a truck was named the Jenny Wren in her honour, writes Roy Perring.

Gill Chapman who is 59, is receiving treatment in Plymouth for terminal cancer. At the very top of her bucket list was to enjoy a ride in a Stobart Truck.

Gill’s wish was granted very much through the work of another former member of the Women’s Royal Naval Service, Pat Clifton from Yeovil. Gill had shared her bucket list through a Facebook group of serving and ex serving WRENs and when Pat heard of Gill’s list she contacted Stobart.

Now very much an iconic brand Stobart must get many such requests, but Pat’s perseverance paid off as Stobart said they were very pleased to honour the forces. Not only would they give Gill a ride in a truck at HMNB Devonport, but they’d let Gill rename one and the name she chose was Jenny Wren. It was also to mark the centenary of the Women’s Royal Naval Service (WRNS).

Regular driver of the mighty Jenny Wren truck, Chris Hurst, was down from Tilbury Docks. He normally delivers biofuel for Stobart Energy. He told the Chronicle “It’s brilliant to drive such an iconic truck and even more so now its the Jenny Wren”.

The ten year lease was completed recently, with the extensive fit out expected to take around eight weeks. The grand opening is expected at the end of May. driving course when leaving the services. When asked how she was feeling about the event she replied, “Absolutely outstanding. Really! I’m pleased and proud of the ladies in the WREN’s who made it all happen.”

After group photos including Gill’s friends, family and former colleagues there was a break for a reception in the President’s Suite at HMS Drake and then Gill’s wish was granted. She climbed up into the passenger seat of the towering vehicle and Chris Hurst drove her around the edge of the car park several times. She was delighted.

John Dickson, regional operations manager at Stobart Energy said: “We are delighted to make Gill’s wish come true and it was an honour to have her ride in one of our iconic vehicles. We would also like to thank HMNB Devonport for hosting the event and everyone else who helped out and attended today.”

Around 20 people, including friends, family and former colleagues of Gill, attended the event. The Dauntless Association, which brings together all ex-WRNS members regardless of rank or age, made the request to Stobart Energy.

Amazingly Pat Clifton who had got things started said she and several of the other ex WRENs had not met Gill until that morning. “We’re shortly off to lunch together and then home.”

No doubt their Facebook page will have been pretty busy.

Popular festival where unity is celebrated

The Rev Osee Ntavuka, of All Nations Ministries (ANM), a multiethnic Christian Church and charity organisation based in Catherine Street, leads the team that organises the popular Unity Festival, held annually on Plymouth Hoe since 2009.

This year’s event, on the weekend of June 22 and 23, is set to be a 10th anniversary celebration to remember.

The family-friendly free festival, also known as U-Fest, brings together people of all ages, from all backgrounds and communities for a music and culture extravaganza that transforms Plymouth Hoe into a place to experience something out of the ordinary.

Pastor Osee’s own experiences led him to seek to bring people together - he is a survivor of the terrible genocide that occurred 25 years ago in Rwanda and knows only too well where extreme ethnic divisions can lead.

“I escaped three times from being killed,” said Osee, “I would say miraculously. I came as a refugee to Plymouth in 2000, and encountered the love and friendship of people from a local church, who welcomed me with open arms and supported me and my family.”

Pastor Osee and wife Mary Louise have four children, two boys and two girls , but they lost many members of their wider family in the genocide, including Osee’s parents.

He not only survived but he has since met his mother’s killer, and those who tried to kill him, and forgiven them. He sees forgiveness as the way to healing the wounds and scars of the past in Rwanda.

“We want to reach out to all communities with love,” he said.

They also run a programme that provides food for homeless people.

Pastor Osee is keen to thank all those who partner with their work, including the festival; like most community-centred activities it relies on the goodwill and expertise of volunteers as well as the good offices of the local council and business community.

Seeing wildlife flourishing in your garden is quite a wonderful sight. With the bee population still declining, it is so important now more than ever to plant flowers that will encourage them to feed on the nectar, and collect the pollen which is used to turn into honey to feed the young bee larvae.

The larvae that are chosen to become future ‘queen bees’ are fed with ‘royal jelly’, which is honey produced by young female worker bees and incorporates not only the pollen but also chemical secretions from their glands.

So what can you do to encourage bees to visit?

For starters, you can plant a plant. These are the top three plants from Plymouth Garden Centre for attracting bees to the garden: Salvia You can often see salvias covered in bees in the evening – perhaps it’s bee dinner-time! Bees can see the colour purple more vividly than any other colour and this will attract them in their numbers.

Alstromeria Despite their exotic appearance, they are hardy down to -12 degrees centigrade. A surprisingly easy plant to look after, which flowers from spring throughout summer. Alstromeria is one of the few plants that has nectar guides (the markings on the flower) that are visible to the human eye as well as the bee; bees see colours on the UV spectrum, which some people think the impressionist artist Claude Monet could also see.

Digitalis - The Foxglove A classic flower for the cottage or wildflower garden. A particular favourite for the longtongued bumblebee, its large flower head and ‘landing strip pattern’ on the inside of the flower is designed to draw the attention of a passing bee and guide it to the nectar within. Despite its beauty it is poisonous to humans or pets.

Not only can children help plant bee-attracting flowers, they can easily build their own little bee house with just a few canes tied together and placed in a sheltered, secure spot. Viaduct works to begin in May Major road improvement works to support some of Plymouth City Centre’s most exciting developments will begin soon.

Shoppers and visitors are being urged to try new routes into the city centre from May 13 when work begins on the viaduct – Exeter Street – the road between the new Drake Leisure complex and Drake Circus.

Maintenance and improvement work for this 140-metre stretch of road will take place ahead of the cinema complex opening its doors in the Autumn.

Councillor Sue Dann, Cabinet member for Environment and Street Scene said: “We’ve got some incredible projects going on in the city centre, the Box, the new Drake Leisure development and plans to revamp and modernise the city centre.

“We want more people to come into the city centre and to spend quality time here but that means we need to sort our roads out. We know it’s a pain but getting this work done now means drivers endure a relatively short period of disruption rather than drag it out.”

The road surface on this part of Exeter Street is patchy and was last resurfaced in 2002. It was due to be resurfaced as part of an ongoing planned maintenance programme, but it made more sense to wait until the main building phase of the Drake Circus leisure redevelopment had finished.

Building contractors McLaren Construction carried out initial work on the central reservation on the viaduct to waterproof it and replace old joints and remove railings.

A similar programme is now due for the rest of the viaduct, which was built in 1959 and formed the covered area of the original Plymouth bus station. The work will take 17 weeks.

South West Highways will carry out the work on the council’s behalf, with the first phase on the shopping centre side – the east bound lane will be closed for ten weeks from May 13 to July 19.

The second phase on the west bound lane into the city centre will run from July 22 until September 6. The city’s bus companies have been given advanced warning of the road works as well as the City Centre Company so that they can plan for alternative routes for deliveries.

To help keep key traffic moving, buses and emergency services will also be able to use Bretonside, which has been closed for over a year while work on the former bus station has been going on. This road will also be open for vehicles wanting access to businesses there.

The crossing at the Charles Cross end of the viaduct will remain open for pedestrians for the entirety of the work. At the same time that this is all going on, work on Charles Cross roundabout will continue.

In May, the right turn out of Drake Circus car park will be closed to allow for junction improvements, a revamp of the crossing and for pavement improvements. There will also be inside lane closures on the roundabout itself and more details will be available nearer the time. Two decisions are being signed this week which authorise funding for the viaduct work and for work to revamp the pavement on the eastbound side, once the work is complete.

Steve Hughes, chief executive of the Plymouth City Centre Company, said: “We want more people to come and to spend their money here – but we have to improve our infrastructure.

“People who drive are being encouraged to come in and out of the city centre by a different route if they possibly can. There’s lots of parking in the West End and lots of amazing shops. Take a different route and help local businesses at the same time.”

Topping out on top of the world at Drake Leisure

The development is set to open later this year and create a new dining and entertainment destination for both residents and visitors to Plymouth.

Council leader Tudor Evans took in the amazing views from the ‘sky bar’ – which is 32 metres above the ground and is now wind and watertight.

Council Leader Tudor Evans said: “This has been a seriously impressive build.

“This is going bring more people into the city centre – at night as well as during the day, it’s going to be somewhere people can catch a film, eat a meal and enjoy a drink – and it’s going to have cracking views across the city.

“Cities need to keep reinventing themselves, keep offering something new to attract people – and this is exactly the sort of project that helps us do that.”

The complex will house a 12 screen Cineworld cinema, 15 restaurants and bars, 420 car park spaces as well as a sky bar above the cinema to capture stunning views of the city and its coastline.

The new cinema will incorporate state of the art audio and visual technology with screens ranging in size from an 80 seat to a giant 450 seat IMAX auditoria.

Recent work on site included the concrete pours for the cinemas as well as installing windows on the ground floor.

The scheme is expected to create 350 permanent jobs, as well as a large number of people employed in the construction.

Plymouth dementia care home rated ‘good’ by Care Quality Commission

Pioneering council project scoops top national award A pioneering community infrastructure initiative which is helping to change residents lives in Plymouth has helped the City Council win the top award at the prestigious Royal Town Planning Institute Awards for Excellence.

The ‘City Change Fund’ project was awarded the Silver Jubilee Cup and the Excellence in Tech within Planning Practice category.

It is the third time Plymouth City Council has won the Silver Jubilee Cup - the highest accolade in the RTPI awards.

The City Change Fund uses Crowdfund Plymouth to distribute funds raised by developments through the Community Infrastructure Levy.

While most of this levy is spent on big things that keep the city running like roads, schools and parks, some can be allocated to great local projects.

Since 2015, the council has pledged over £250,000 on 60 projects with the Crowdfund Plymouth platform, raising over £1.5 million in the city. Projects have included many from social enterprises who are delivering projects that are close to local peoples’ hearts. Campaigns have included improving local green space, such as Collings Park Trust to a sonic art silent disco at Devil’s Point.

The Council uses the Crowdfunder website to distribute the ‘neighbourhood proportion’ and pledges up to 50 per cent of a project’s costs (up to a maximum of £20,000), if they met the legislative and Council’s criteria and priorities.

City planning manager Rebecca Miller said: “This is the third time Plymouth has won the Jubilee Cup – the highest accolade the RTPI can give and I am chuffed to bits for our teams, our council and our city to have achieved this recognition.

“To me, this project is an incredible example of how a

council project can make a massive difference to hundreds of people. We have been blown away by the ideas, innovation and passion people had for projects designed to make Plymouth an even better place to be.

“A city is not just about buildings, roads and services.

It is about the people who live here and how they feel about Plymouth. The fact this funding comes from developments across the city means residents are benefiting from growth. We are engaging with community groups and residents in a whole new way. It is helping to galvanise people who have incredible ideas and drive – to make things happen!”

The judges thought this online platform was a ground breaking initiative and the impacts are already vast. They were particularly impressed by the high levels of engagement the Council have had with the public, especially the younger generation, empowering them with involvement in the early planning stages.

Waypoints Plymouth staff celebrate the ‘good’ rating from CQC

Waypoints Plymouth, a specialist dementia care home in St Budeaux, has received an overall ‘Good’ rating from the Care Quality Commission, (CQC) following a comprehensive inspection.

As part of this overall rating, Waypoints Plymouth was also given a ‘good’ rating for four different elements of its provision, including the service being safe, effective, caring and responsive.

Home manager at Waypoints Plymouth, Samuel Snelling said “We are absolutely thrilled with the overall ‘Good’ rating. This achievement is due to our fantastic team who are caring, hard working and help to create such a positive and compassionate culture at the home.

“Since the last inspection, where we received an overall ‘requires improvement’ rating, the team and I have been working tirelessly to ensure that any previous criticisms have been rectified. We are delighted with the result of

the recent inspection and we are especially proud of how the report’s findings reflect our service’s values, which include living well, dignity and respect, privacy, independence, involvement, freedom and choice.

These values aim to ensure that our care truly puts the person at the centre of everything we do.”

Some of the comments in the inspection included: “People were supported to have maximum choice and control of their lives and staff supported them in the least restrictive way possible.”

“People were cared for by kind and compassionate staff, who not only looked after people living at the service, but extended their warmth to people’s families. People’s privacy and dignity was promoted and staff gave people as much control over their own care as possible, by offering choice.”

“People were cared for in a service which had a positive culture, and care and support was delivered in line with a core set of values.”

“The chef was passionate about providing good quality meals for

people and was knowledgeable about people’s nutritional needs.”

“People and their relatives were involved in their care as much as possible, with staff offering choices and people’s care plans being reviewed, with them and or with their relatives.”

“People’s visitors were welcome at any time. Relatives told us how staff extended their warmth to them when they visited, commenting ‘They’ve given me the support I’ve needed during very emotional and difficult times’ and ‘My Dad is extremely well cared for and the support extends to my Mum and us all whenever we visit.’ ” In addition to the Plymouth unit, Waypoints Care Group runs two other specialist dementia care homes in Dorset. Stagecoach South West is putting its weight behind a mammoth awareness and fundraising campaign for St Luke’s Hospice as key partner for Elmer’s Big Parade Plymouth.

The exciting sculpture trail with a difference is set to be Devon and Cornwall’s biggest public art event for 10 weeks this summer from July 8 to September 16. It is estimated the colourful parade of 40 unique elephants will attract 250,000 visitors to explore the trail, raising vital funds for St Luke’s Hospice.

The charity has recruited the beloved children’s storybook favourite Elmer the elephant, plus 40 of his charming chunky chums, for the outdoor trail around Plymouth and surrounding areas. Each sculpture will feature a bespoke design, painted by talented local artists.

As well as turning Plymouth patchwork with the enchanting elephants, St Luke’s is using the campaign to highlight the importance of its vital service and encourage more open and honest conversations about the ‘taboo’ subjects of death, dying and bereavement that can help us all, including schoolchildren who

Co-op staff step out for charity

Co-op staff from stores across Plymouth have walked a total of 40 miles in support of Mental Health Awareness - raising £1,500 in the process.

Employees Nicky Bowden and Cassandra Humphreys organised the event, while colleagues, friends and family joined them along the way.

In the weeks leading up to the event, local Coop stores took part in fundraising for the cause.

Beacon Park stores decided to sell 100 lucky squares for £1 each, awarding half of the winnings to the lucky buyer of the winning square, and the other half being donated to the chosen charity.

This was designed and organised by team leader Aimee Smith, who also took part in the walk on the day.

The walk was organised into two groups, one

starting at the Southway Store and the other in Staddiscombe. At 6AM both groups set off on their scheduled journeys, later to be reunited at the Mutley Plain Store where they would finish the last 4 check-ins together as one.

Over 30 stores were visited during the walk, and check-ins were documented via the Mind Walk Plymouth’s Facebook Page.

The final store to be reached by those walking for Mental Health Awareness was Fort Austin.

The collective of colleagues, friends and family reached their final destination earlier than planned, with 30 minutes to go. They were welcomed by a crowd of supporters.

A total of £1500 was raised for Plymouth & District Mind, a charity who provide advice and support to empower anyone experiencing mental health problems.

Tribute to society’s unseen heroes THE

Experience Sat at home one recent Monday evening I received a message saying that a close family member had injured themselves and was at A&E. Needless to say plans changed and I made contact to check they were ok.

Thankfully the injury was not a major one and the grateful patient was able to leave Derriford hours later after being checked over and treated.

Myself and my wife went up to the hospital in the early hours of the morning to offer a lift and be there to support if we could.

In my only previous experiences with the emergency department I have been the patient and so it was a strange experience going in to wait with someone. I have to say it was an assault on the senses as I could see and hear people of all ages with varying degrees of physical ailments. It was pretty overwhelming.

Standing there feeling quite uncomfortable I couldn’t help but feel an almighty sense of admiration for all the staff who were there to care for the patients. There were all kinds of different needs to be met and new people

Commemoration to mark 25th anniversary of Rwanda genocide A special event to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the genocide against members of the Tutsi community in Rwanda will be held in Plymouth in May.

Kwibuka - which means 'Let Us Remember' - will take place on May 18. It is being organised by Plymouth-based All Nations Ministries, whose leader Revd Osee Ntavuka, survived the genocide but lost many members of his family.

It was during a 100 day period in April 1994 that an estimated 800,000 men, women and children - all from the minority Tutsi community - were systematically murdered by the rival Hutu tribe.

The Kwibuka event will be attended by the Rwanda High Commissioner, the Lord Mayor of Plymouth, the Mayor of Rwandas's Nyarugenge District and the Bishop of Plymouth, the Rt Revd Nick McKinnel.

The afternoon's programme will include the laying of flowers on the Memorial Stone at the Peace Garden on Plymouth Hoe, which will also include speeches, prayers and songs from a children's choir.

This will then be followed by a Commemoration Service at Catherine Street Baptist Church led by Revd Osee Ntavuka.

The sermon will be given by the Bishop of Plymouth followed by two genocide survivors who will share the horror of their experiences.

Revd Osee Ntavuka will express his views on the benefits of forgiveness, followed by speeches from the Rwanda High Commissioner and the Mayor of Nyarugenge District. A candle will then be lit in remembrance of all those who died and suffered during the genocide.

New director at FlyPlymouth FlyPlymouth has appointed Amanda Pullinger as a non-executive director.

Amanda is currently chief executive of 100 Women In Finance, a global association of professionals in the finance industry that aims to empower women in the finance industry and inspire the next generation of young women to join the industry.

She was previously a Partner at Aquamarine Capital, managing two investment funds. Among her other roles, Amanda was chair of the Halo Trust (the world’s largest humanitarian landmine clearance charity) from 2014-18 and continues to serve on the Halo USA Board as a Trustee.

Based in New York, Amanda has family in the South West and was a regular user of Plymouth Airport prior to its closure in 2011.

FlyPlymouth was created in 2015 to acquire and reopen Plymouth Airport. The company has developed detailed plans to operate the site as a business and general aviation facility in line with local policy. The core management team is now in place as is the private sector backing required to fund and deliver these plans.

Brian Conley to star in Plymouth panto

Theatre Royal Plymouth have announced that comedy legend, musical theatre, television and Strictly star Brian Conley will lead the cast of this year’s spectacular production of Cinderella.

In a career spanning three decades Brian has appeared in award-winning West End musicals and television sitcoms, presented his own chat shows, recorded three albums and completed numerous sell-out tours of the UK. He was a contestant on the 15th series of BBC 1’s Strictly Come Dancing. Coupled with prodancer Amy Dowden, Brian was fifth to leave the competition, not before wowing the nation with his endearing dance routines and loveable personality.

This year’s Freedom Community festival will feature a dedicated family community area that will be an alcohol and smoke free zone.

It will provide a variety of creative fun learning opportunities linking to a strong environmental theme. Organisers are working with partner groups to combine resources, including Scrap Store, Clean Your Patch, On Course, Racial Equality Council, Greenbank Youth, Creative Minds art group, Growing Community Abundance, Jar Zero Waste, Mega Reach student group, Redeemer Church, Barnardo’s and more.

In the same community area there will also be a stage featuring a mix of music, dance and fun.

The stage will be run by City College Plymouth students as part of their ongoing training in live sound.

The festival, now in its 19th year, will include the best from the Plymouth live music scene, plus a variety of food outlets, licensed bar, craft stalls, inflatables and rides.

This year’s chosen charity at the festival is the Shekinah Mission and there is a fundraising music event being held at the B-Bar on May 12 from 2pm.

Organisers are also holding a spoken word and music evening at the Shekinah charity shop on Mutley Plain that will feature some of the best in local writers and singer songwriters. This will be held on May 23 at 7pm.

Seventy swimmers took part in this year’s Lions Club of Plymouth charity Swimathon at Saltash Leisure Pool.

Fourteen teams of five swimmers entered the event, which involved 25 metre lengths being swum by each individual in a relay format over 50 minutes - with the team covering the most lengths being the winners.

The winning team - Team Tanzania comprised four teenagers from Callington who completed 148 lengths, equivalent to 3,700 metres. The team was Lily Thorp, 14, Jamine Coleman 15, Evie Saunders, 13 and Jess Gerrad, aged 15.

Each team were swimming for a charity of

their own choice in addition to the Lions chosen charity. The charities benefiting were: Keep Me Close (the Lions chosen charity), Action Dunchenne, an individual lady with sepsis, Plymouth Highbury Trust, Special Olympics Team Plymouth & District, Shekinah Mission, Hannah’s (Dame Hannah Rogers), Tazania 2020 Expedition, Ivybridge Guides, Coeliac UK, and Metabolic Support UK. Tea dances return to The Hoe as part of Lady Astor Statue campaign The iconic Plymouth tea dances of the Second World War are to be held again on Plymouth Hoe as part of the Lady Astor Statue Campaign celebrating 100 years of women in Parliament.

For one day only there will be dancing again with a band, professional dancers on hand and sailors in uniform on May 26 this year between 1pm and 4pm.

The original tea dances were organised by Nancy and Waldorf Astor during the Second World War to boost morale after the city was bombed almost beyond recognition during the Blitz in 1941.

In the wake of this devastation the tea dances were held on The Hoe and Lady Astor famously joined those dancing. At the time Waldorf Astor said: “The people of Plymouth have danced on the Hoe during the darkest days of war. They will dance here again in peace on a Hoe which overlooks a city which has been planned for them, for a wider, freer, healthier, and more prosperous life.”

As part of the Lady Astor Statue Appeal many pensioners who remembered Nancy Astor contacted the project. Among them was Alice Jones, 92, who said: “I danced on The Hoe promenade in front of Elliot Terrace, Lady Astor on the microphone urging us girls to dance with the many servicemen from all nations. A statue in her memory is long overdue. Her good works will live on forever. God bless her. We will ever be grateful to her.”

Project leader Alexis Bowater said: “We had so many people contacting us with memories and in particular recalling these tea dances that we thought it would be fun, fitting and poignant tribute to them to fulfil the promise Waldorf Astor made all those years ago.

“The people of Plymouth will dance again on The Hoe, in peacetime, on May 26th this year, with representatives of Her Majesty’s Armed The Plymouth Regional Head & Neck Cancer Support Group Our group is specifically aimed at head and neck patients, their partners and/or carers. Our support group will also welcome anyone who wishes to join us for whatever reason. You don’t have to be a cancer patient to join us but those cancer patients without a support group of their own will be made especially welcome. This year, marks the twelfth anniversary of the Reece French bricklaying competition, set-up in memory of the former City College Plymouth student.

Reece French died aged 20, in September 2007, after he was hit by a falling skip full of bricks at the East End Community Village Enterprise Centre in Cattedown.

The competition set-up in his memory put the college’s bricklaying students’ skills to the test by challenging them to build a complex patterned wall in an allocated time. With trowels in hand, the students tried to ‘wow’ their lecturers in the hopes of winning an award.

Reece’s parents, Denise and Ivan French, and Simon Parsons from Kier, presented the awards to the winners. Reece’s mother, Denise, said: “It’s great to see the College host this event year after year as it’s really close to our hearts. A big thanks for everything and we appreciate that the College continues to honour our son.”

City College’s Director of Technology, Marine and Renewables, Peter Mercy, said: “This year’s competition has been fantastic and the standard of work, as always, has been very high. It is a real honour to be able to run this annual competition to honour Reece’s life.

“The students all work incredibly hard throughout the year and the competition is an opportunity for them to show off their talents.

Reece’s parents are always so supportive of the competition. I would like to say a special thank you to the College staff who supported this event and to Kier for their attendance and kind prize donations and, of course, to the students for taking part.”

This year’s winners included: first year apprentices Sam Lavington (first place) and Brandon Loze (second place); second year apprentices Paddy Hayes (first place) and Kyle Dickinson (second place); and Shaun Duggan who was awarded a trophy for the most improved student.

Young carers treated to ocean-themed fun at the National Marine Aquarium

Young carers in Plymouth are being given the chance to take a break and connect with the ocean thanks to a new series of events being run by the National Marine Aquarium (NMA).

A group of young carers from Stoke Damerel Community College aged between 11 and 14 have been invited to attend the second special edition Ocean Squad programme after the initial programme, which ran throughout December and January 2018, proved to be a huge success.

Those participating in the latest run of Young Carers Ocean Squad sessions are being treated to an action-packed schedule of fun and educational activities, including snorkelling, taking a boat trip around Plymouth Sound, cooking sustainable seafood and exploring the local beaches.

They are also able to go behind the scenes at the NMA with an exciting back-of-house tour, visiting all the places only Aquarium scientists are usually able to go.

Weather Ocean-themed fun to young carers across the city, and even more so that is has been so well received.

“Many young carers have a lot of responsibility on their shoulders, and so we really wanted to help bring their community together and give them a break from the pressures of their day-to-day lives. Our Young Carers Ocean Squad here at the NMA is a chance for them to have some fun, make new friends and learn and try new things.”

“The response to the programme so far has been incredible, and all places have

already been filled now for the rest of the year. It has been immensely popular, and we hope that all young carers attending in 2019 will have a fun and memorable experience they won’t forget.”

The project is being funded by a grant of almost £10,000 from the Big Lottery Fund, which was awarded to the NMA in September 2018, with each Young Carers Ocean Squad series lasting six sessions and a further two series set to take place later this year.

All costs including activities, materials, equipment and lunches are being covered by the grant, with places offered on a complimentary basis to carers across the city.

Police appeal after conmen trick elderly women

Police have appealed for information over two incidents of fraud in Plymouth in which bogus workmen targeted elderly women in their own homes.

Fundraising projects, an outstanding commitment to learning and overcoming adversity were just some of the achievements celebrated at City College’s Spring Student of the Term awards.

The event recognises students who have gone above and beyond - making a positive contribution to the College or local community, or overcoming personal challenges to achieve in their studies.

The award winners were joined by family, friends and their nominating teachers. They enjoyed a delicious celebration meal prepared by the college’s catering and hospitality students before receiving their awards.

Penny Wycherley, Principal of City College, said: “The Student of the Term awards are an important event for the College and a great way to celebrate the success of our students. Events like these are a celebration of some of the remarkable achievements of our students and recognise publicly their hard work and commitment.

“These students, some of whom have had to overcome additional barriers, are each progressing incredibly well and deserve to be congratulated.

The staff at the College are enormously proud of their accomplishments and the way in which they reflect so well on the City. It really is an honour to celebrate the outstanding qualities and achievements of our students and to share in their successes with family, friends and teaching staff.”

Award Winners Vanessa Hawken, 43, Devonport and Caroline Mayne, 51, Mutley Vanessa and Caroline were both appointed as assistant managers at kitchen and homeware chain Lawsons and knew the value an apprenticeship would bring to making them a success in their new roles, but they didn’t anticipate winning Student of the Term awards for their work ethic and teamwork.

Caroline said: “I’ve worked in retail for 35 years, six of which have been at Lawsons as a parttime sales assistant. The support I’ve received

from my family and assessor at the college have made returning to education possible. They have motivated me and reassured me that the hard work is all worthwhile which has clearly paid off.”

Vanessa has worked at Lawsons for 14 years and her hard work was rewarded with a promotion to assistant manager.

She said:”I was keen to improve my knowledge and the management apprenticeship has taught me everything I need to know to become an efficient manager. Caroline and I have really supported each other through the qualification and to be recognised for that has been lovely.”

Ismail Mustafa, 33, Saltash English Student of the Term When Ismail’s lecturer first met him in 2013, he could not write, or read any more than his own name. Over the past few years he has worked hard to develop his literacy skills, whilst raising a young family and working.

“I really enjoy the college environment and am really proud of what I have achieved over the past few months. Coming to college has helped me to develop my literacy skills.

“I am now able to complete forms and deal with correspondence with confidence. I am looking forward to completing my Level 1 Functional Skills in English and this wouldn’t have been possible without the support of my lecturers.”

Tom Briggs, 18, Torpoint Science Student of the Term When Tom’s step-dad sadly passed away, the biomedical science student demonstrated incredible grit, determination and resilience, focusing on his goal of going to university and maintained a focus on revising for and sitting his science exams despite the sad events.

“When I came to the College, I had no formal qualifications. I was really pleased to gain my Level 2 in Applied Science and now I’m nearing the end of my level 3, am really proud to have received an offer to study biomedical science at the University of Plymouth.

“It’s been challenging for so many reasons, but the college has been really supportive and it’s

great to be recognised for my hard work.”

Hannah Tustain, 17, Millbrook Music Performing & Production Arts Student of the Term Hannah has a hearing impairment, but has developed excellent personal strategies for ensuring there is no barrier to her learning. As a compassionate and caring member of her group, Hannah always looks to support other students and has already made a significant contribution to college life through a number of performance projects, including playing a number of roles in a recent performance of ‘One Million Tiny Plays About Britain’ by Craig Taylor.

She is currently working with her group on a new piece of original theatre which explores modes of communication, highlighting the perils of not understanding a given situation, particularly for the hearing impaired.

“I love my course at College. My confidence in acting is really developing and it’s been great to play a part in developing the signing skills of staff within the department in order to better support other students like myself. Hopefully, this will help me to further develop my skills and scope as a theatre maker.”

Hannah Roberts - Cossey, 21, Ivybridge Access to Higher Education Student of the Term Access student, Hannah, was celebrated for her sunny outlook and deep compassion for others - which stands her in good stead for a career as a midwife. As a real team player, Hannah was nominated for an award not only for her exemplary approach to learning, but also for her heavy involvement in her group’s fundraising project.

“I love being part of the Access community at the College. The staff and students I work with are great to be around and there are so many opportunities for students to get involved with.

“The fundraising project has been so much fun.

I’ve loved being involved in bake sales, arts and crafts, designing, and organising raffles for charity and it’s lovely to have received a Student of the Term award.”

Detectives are seeking information after residents in the Keyham and Crownhill areas of the city were visited on Tuesday April 2 and pressured to hand over money.

Both victims were told work costing £900 needed to be done to their water supply or drains – or they faced having to leave their properties.

An elderly woman was approached in the Keyham area at around 11am by a suspect who claimed to be carrying out drainage work in the area.

She was later visited at home and paid a deposit of £600, only to be told the problem was larger than anticipated and would cost £1,800.

The victim went to the bank to withdraw the remaining funds, but decided to contact police after a taxi driver advised her not to hand over the cash.

The suspect is described as a white male, aged in his late 20s or early 30s, of medium build, about 5ft 8in to 5ft 10in in height, and clean shaven. He spoke in a local accent and was wearing a hard hat.

At around 1pm on the same day, an elderly female in the Crownhill area was visited by a man who stated there was an issue with her water supply.

She was later contacted by an older, unknown male who again asked her for money, but the woman became suspicious and refused to pay.

The suspect is described as a white male, aged in his early 20s, of average build and height, with no facial hair. He was wearing a high-visibility jacket and hard hat.

Detective Constable Sam Smith, of Crownhill CID, said: “Police would like to remind the public to be vigilant against this type of crime, look out for vulnerable family members and neighbours and be reminded that caution should be used against traders who attend at your door pressuring you for money.

“The public should not feel threatened or intimidated by traders or commit to any unnecessary work. If you feel vulnerable to this or feel threatened then call 999.”

Anyone who witnessed any suspicious activity, or who has further information, is urged to contact DC 7419 Sam Smith on 101 and quote crime number CR/029124/19.

A former Petty Officer with more than 12 years service in the Armed Forces attended a special event at HMS Drake where a truck was named the Jenny Wren in her honour.

Gill Chapman who is 59, is receiving treatment in Plymouth for terminal cancer.

At the very top of her bucket list was to enjoy a ride in a Stobart Truck.

Truck treat for Gill
