Eleanor Russell-Hsieh is a trained and accredited paper conservator, artist and printmaker based in Herodsfoot, Cornwall. Growing up near Landrake and attending Saltash Community School, she moved back to Cornwall from London in 2013 and started printing the same year – inspired by the county’s diverse and beautiful nature, along with our amazing oceans.

The cover image is called Jellyfish I and was created using the monotype printmaking method – inking a complete surface, before making a subtractive image using sticks, cotton buds and rags, and then transferring onto paper using a rolling etching press. Visitors to Trisha’s studio can expect to see examples of her most recent abstract work, which is influenced by pattern and shape in nature. Valerie’s work reflects her love of colour and texture, and is inspired by seascapes, landscapes and the natural world.

Drawn to the Valley has over 150 artists, all living and working in the Tamar Valley or within a few miles of it. Many of those participating in Open Studios are in south east Cornwall, with the art trail taking in Callington, Kelly Bray, Torpoint and Rame as well as Saltash.

St Barnabas community hospital is part of the local health and care system, located within a residential area close to the town centre. The Minor Injuries Unit in the site was temporarily closed in December 2016, and the 9 inpatient beds temporarily closed in February 2017. Since the summer 2018 several community health teams have been based at the hospital, some 70 staff in all, and regular clinics continue to be offered from the site.

The current draft neighbourhood plan insists it would be inappropriate to lose such a valuable local service centre. The community hospital and adjoining health centre have considerable potential for regeneration to provide a modern community health hub that meets current and future needs and could enhance cooperation across medical and social services.

However, both professional and public opinion is changing to reflect the fact that health care needs to be focussed on prevention to be able to withstand the expected growth in demand.

The working group are in the middle of discussing the different options as to what type of facility St Barnabas will become. Any change in services or provision of alternative services will need to improve the health and wellbeing of the local population,

assets or permanent change to the services offered there will only be acceptable where the proposal shows there is no need for the facility or service, it or the service can be re- provided in alternative accessible locations or in a more effective way.

Traffic Issues being Addressed

At the recent full Saltash Town Council meeting concerns were raised by Cllr Pete Samuels relating to the effectiveness of an advisory sign for all traffic leaving Gilston Road in the town to turn left.

Cllr Brenda Samuels advised of an e-mail received prior to the meeting in which the Operations Consultant from the White Rose Group wrote on behalf of all local businesses within the Gilston Road area, who are now suffering income loss due to traffic congestion.

It was resolved by the Town Council to invite the group and other local businesses affected by the traffic congestion along with North Ward Councillors, Highways, the local MP and Cornwall Councillors to a meeting at Saltash Guildhall to discuss the issue further with a view to seeing a solution.

G i v i n g HEALTH GROUP Fore Street a Boost SALTASH MENTAL

We sincerely apologise for a mistake in the August edition of Love Saltash that gave the wrong name of the organiser of the Memorial Wreath Laying Service at the Waterside.

Linda Cory Stoneman was in fact responsible for the organising of the event, something which had been months in planning.

She organised the first Memorial Wreath Laying Service in memory of those who have lost their lives at the Tamar Bridge through Mental Health Issues and in support of their families.

Linda

is

the

administrator

of

the Saltash Mental Health Support Group on Facebook. The group offers support and advice to those who are affected by Mental Health regardless of their age or sexuality, and it offers an opportunity to discuss problems around mental health with people who have similar experiences. It requires agreement to join, meaning that individuals’ confidences are respected. The group is clear that they do not offer medical advice to their members, rather they point them in the direction of where they can receive professional advice. However, they have qualified Mental Health Support workers along with a qualified Mentor within the group.

The group is looking to set up regular monthly meetings so that members can get to meet each other and make new friendships alongside offering support and welcomes new members from Saltash and Plymouth areas.

It also hopes to make the recent Wreath Laying Service an annual event.

Saltash Town Council recently agreed for six banners be installed in Fore Street by the end of September. Cllr. Sarah Martin showed the work and the designs that have been produced which delighted the Council members. It was agreed that previously set aside budget would be used to pay for the flags for the benefit of all who visit, live and work in Fore Street. The banners will have design topics associated with figures and iconic landmarks relating to Saltash.

As an added bonus, it was also agreed that bunting would also go up on Fore Street on the basis that it is bright and colourful and of good quality – avoiding any plastic material.

Something unique and exciting is about to happen in Saltash!

This autumn a musical/theatrical event will bring together performers from the local community and beyond. ‘Lowena’ will tell a story of love, tragedy and triumph against an all-but forgotten backdrop Wearde Camp. This was a training facility for troops preparing for battle in the First World War and was situated on the outskirts of the town. After the war it focussed on convalescence for injured troops

AND THE BAND PLAYED ON On a balmy summer Sunday afternoon recently, Forder Conservation Community Association held its wonderful Forder Fete where hundreds of visitors and locals alike gathered to enjoy the fun and nostalgic events on the banks of the River at Forder.

There was the usual Barbeque with sizzling burgers and sausages, white elephant stalls, plant and homemade produce stalls, splat the rat, raffle table, and much more to entertain the visitors at this quite remarkable historic event……..And the Band played on!

Young sailors from the Saltash Sailing Club came up by river as part of the dinghy sailing competition……

AMY AND FRIENDS STILL LEARNING!

Despite reaching an age where many of us have decided that we know it all, Amy Farnworth is still keen to find out more about the bigger and smaller world around her.

Founding the Saltash Second Forum around 25 years ago, Amy who is now 102 still attends its regular meetings.

It was called the Second Forum as Saltash was home to quite a few different Forums over the years, although sadly Amy’s is the only one to continue.

The Forum meets at the Saltash Wesley Church every Friday morning at 10.30 am, and regularly invites speakers to inform and entertain its members.

One of their regular speakers is former Mayor of Saltash, Sue Hooper MBE, who recently visited the Forum to deliver two different talks.

The Life and Diary of Anne Frank is one of the most widely read books in the world, read by millions globally, and published in 67 different languages.

Sue’s second talk was on a subject she knows very well, the history of Saltash, its remarkable Civic Regalia and its historic importance. Saltash was a thriving town long before Plymouth. The town suffered dreadfully during both the Civil War and WW2, but always recovered remarkably with rebuilds and new builds, making Saltash the thriving community it is today.

Both informative talks given by Sue were most enjoyed.

The Saltash Second Forum is a friendship group and enjoys weekly meetings, talks, tea, coffee and biscuits and is very much an integral part of the community, new members would be most welcomed.

SEA working to shap Bottle-bricks, termed Eco Bricks, were developed in the Philippines as a solution to two real problems: a shortage of shelter; and excessive plastic waste - poor quality, non-recyclable plastic dumped by the West. A Canadian reliefworker came up with the idea of stuffing the plastic waste into empty plastic bottles, to build

‘Eco’ bricks in the West In the UK, making these bottle-bricks has become a popular fun activity, which is supposed to be environmentally friendly.

The bricks are colourful and seem to be simple to make. They have been used to make indoor furniture, or they can be

covered in clay and concrete to make outdoor furniture, walls etc.

What’s the problem? Sounds like childplay to me Well, if the bricks are going to last, they have to be made to high standards. Any contamination, such as bits of food, can produce methane and cause the whole brick to break down. The bottle must be scrupulously clean, and so must all the waste that’s stuffed into it. That isn’t easy.

Next, the bottle must be stuffed really tight from the very bottom to the top, which takes quite a bit of concentration and physical hard work. Filled bottles must reach a minimum weight to make them acceptable. If a bottle’s not full enough

But they are called ‘ecobricks’ and the websites report plenty of benefits, so they must be good for the planet.

Although the claim is that they ‘benefit local communities’ all they do is postpone the problem of waste for a few years, by which time it will be a lot more difficult for the future community to deal with.

Some promoters plan to export them for building houses in developing nations, but the transport adds to the total carbon footprint and threats like floods and earthquakes add to the quality control nightmare. This is just another form of exporting our plastic waste to poorer countries.

Too good to be true?

All that effort of cleaning and stuffing takes a long time - as much as a couple of hours for a 1 litre bottle.

So, not really child’s play at all.

At least they’re a way of cleaning up the environment Wrong again. The bricks are not a way of taking beach litter or street litter and turning it into something useful, because this type of litter is not clean enough.

Plastic breaks down in sunlight or when it’s wet over time and the tiny particles of plastic pollute the local environment - for ever. Their breakdown releases chemicals used in the manufacture, and some of these are very toxic to the environment.

Sometimes the waste plastic is burned, which releases even nastier toxins that poison local people, for example causing cancer.

SEA thinks the idea of ‘eco’ bricks delivers the wrong message on plastic - completely wrong.

Instead, what we should be doing is: • stop buying non recyclable packaging • find an alternative, or bring-your-own packaging, and • lobby shops and manufacturers so they stop trying to sell us plastic.

We must stop regarding any plastic as ‘waste’ to be thrown away.

BEST BIRTHDAY EVER

At the end of July, 18 people connected to Wesley church celebrated birthdays ending with a nought. Along with many other friends they took part in a mock aeroplane flight to Zimbabwe.

Elspeth Nicolls, one of the 18, conceived and organised, with a strong team of helpers, the idea which proved to be a very entertaining evening and a huge success.

The church was set out in rows of seats just like those on an aeroplane. Each seat was numbered, and all passengers had boarding passes. The plane was piloted by Mel Wallis who had a strange resemblance to Kaiser Bill’s Batman. Passengers benefited from his reassuring running commentary during the flight.

The shortened journey to Zimbabwe was shown on an elevated screen via video so

everyone had an idea of the countries being travelled over below. (This was provided by Paul Melling).

Holley, explained the rudiments of safety on the plane and how to escape in the event of an emergency. A demonstration took place on how the safety jackets worked, completely mesmerising the whole of those on board but causing great hilarity.

Half way through the flight a very smart hostess (Dot Wallis) and steward (Roger Thompson) brought around the refreshment trolley and for a moment it was just like the real thing.

Shortly afterwards the ‘plane’ landed for a fuel stop allowing passengers and crew the opportunity to eat a meal which was served by Wesley catering committee.

During this time the 18 birthday bashers, aged from 50 to 100, gathered together for photographs. Then Betty Alford who will be 100 this year, cut the large birthday cake made to resemble the Zimbabwe flag.

To while away the time waiting for boarding again a paper elephant-making event took place.

Following a demonstration by Elspeth everyone had a go and some even resembled the real thing!

After boarding the plane and more words of encouragement from the pilot there was no time for snoozing because an on-flight quiz took place.

This meant that 18 baby photographs of the 18 birthday bashers were on display and passengers had to name them - this was not an easy task !

Finally, the plane arrived at Saltash Wesley Airport and a plane-load of very happy travellers disembarked. £788 was raised to help with extreme poverty in Mbare, Zimbabwe.

What is stress?

Our bodies and brains are quite skilled at protecting us from threat and danger. They are so good in fact that they can activate resources to protect us by preparing us to either stay and fight or to escape as quickly as possible!

Our bodies also produce higher quantities of certain chemicals such as adrenaline, cortisol and noradrenaline which our bodies need to react in the face of danger. These can prompt an increased heart rate, sweating and heightened muscle preparedness.

From an evolutionary perspective, these systems are inbuilt to survive threat. For example, the surge of cortisol manages the body’s inflammatory response to ongoing stress.

However, when levels of

cortisol persist this can be poisonous to our bodies and cause a wide range of health problems. In addition, when we are stressed the immune system’s ability to fight off infection is reduced, meaning we are more susceptible to ill health.

Whilst this is worrying, it is also noted that a certain level of stress can also prime us for action in a positive way.

Many researchers have explored the relationship between stress and performance. It has been found that a certain level of stress (physiological or mental arousal) can be optimal for performance and functioning.

On the other hand, this also means that when levels of arousal are too high, performance can decrease.

We can find ourselves entering a cycle going from ‘meltdown’ when things get too much to switching

35 off and feeling boredom and ‘low mood’.

When we think about our window of tolerance, we know that when we are within this window, we are able to readily receive, process and integrate information and respond to everyday demands of life without much difficulty. Everyone’s windows of tolerance differs and people have dissimilar optimal levels of arousal. It is important to remember that everyone’s experiences of stress are subjective.

Today, rather than an attack from a sabre-toothed tiger we are triggered into threat by modern day stressors. These can be overwhelming workloads, financial pressures and relationship difficulties for example. It is important to learn to recognise when stress levels are too high.

When you are stressed, you may experience many different feelings such as anxiety, sadness, anger or fear. These can sometimes interact with each other and produce physical symptoms as well.

Stressful life events can also possibly contribute to symptoms of depression. Feeling stressed can also cause you to behave differently. These behaviours may be withdrawing yourself, feeling indecisive and irritable. Stress can also affect our body in various ways such as headaches, nausea and palpitations. Experiencing stress repeatedly over a long period of time may also lead to you noticing your sleep and memory are affected.

All of us can undoubtedly recognise some of these feelings above and will have felt stressed or overwhelmed at one point in our lives. There are things that we can do to recognise and manage stress even though the causes can be outside our control.

Recognising Making connections between emotional and physical signs and pressures that you are faced with. Try to identify underlying causes. This can help when planning to address the things you have control over.

Building supportive relationships Close friends and family can offer help and practical advice to support you. Hobbies and clubs can expand these networks and affect your mood for the better.

Diet Eating healthily can affect our mood. Keeping our bodies healthy by getting the right nutrients and vitamins makes for a happy mind.

Exercise This can be an excellent ‘in moment’ approach to managing stress. Physical activities such as walking can boost our mood and can make a difference. Exercise can also release endorphins, which make us feel good!

Take time out Take time to relax and practice self-care. It is important to have a balance between doing things for yourself and doing things for others.

Sleep Having a restful night’s sleep is very important and can be helped by cutting down caffeine, avoiding screen time etc.

Self-compassion Look for things in your life that are positive and you are grateful for. Do not be afraid to ask for help if you feel you are no longer able to manage things on your own. 39 Love Saltash wants to congratulate all the young people who have spent an anxious summer waiting for results of exams.

Whilst many of us have achieved in life despite a less than perfect school record (and believe me, there are many of us!), it is still fantastic to applaud the hard work of teachers and students and the hopes and dreams that are fostered.

And Post 16 students at Saltash Community School have a lot to celebrate this summer, having achieved a wonderful set of A Level examination results. In judging the school’s Sixth Form provision to be ‘Good’ in May, the Ofsted team noted that, “Teachers and students have good working relationships which help promote successful learning. Teachers challenge students

in their thinking and they respond well.” This is evidenced in the fantastic results achieved this summer. Almost 45% of the grades achieved were grades A*-B and nearly 75% were grades A*-C. Top performers were Harriet Hunt, Lucie Jones and Charlie Potts, all of whom achieved 2 A*s and an A grade. Harriet studied English Literature (A*), History (A*) and Philosophy (A); Lucie, English Language (A*), Sociology (A*) and History (A); and Charlie, English Literature (A*), Sociology (A*) and Politics (A). Harriet and Lucie also achieved A* grades for the Extended Project Qualification.

This new course was introduced in Year 12, with all of the year group sitting the examination.

The qualification achieved a 99% pass rate and a quarter of the students achieved the top grades.

FITNESS AND FUN wit Love Saltash recently received this email from Sally Carnes.

“I am contacting you because I know you are keen on people who help the community and Rachel really does. Not one to blow her own trumpet or boast, I don’t think she realises how much she does for us.

“Rachel runs a whole series of fitness and exercise classes. I have the pleasure of attending her classes for seniors on Tuesday mornings at 10.45 in Burraton Community Centre.

“Having had two major abdominal surgeries, Rachel has made a tremendous impact on my life and greatly aided my recovery. She allows me to use a chair at the back whilst everyone that can uses a mat. She is such fun and so positive. Sometimes we are laughing so much it is almost impossible to do the exercises properly! She does not mind if you cannot do things and just laughs if you get it slightly wrong.

I Hope you will want to do an article about her contribution to Saltash, she can be found on Facebook at Fitness and Fun with Rachel.”

Rachel Mabbitt trained in London for over two years and worked in her home county of Hertfordshire for four years at some top fitness centres. She realised quickly that she didn’t want to be a teacher that just said hello, taught the class and then said goodbye at the end.

She moved to Saltash 16 years ago with a business plan to help people in the community to keep fit in local halls and schools, without the intimidation of having perfect fitness outfits or any mirrors. Classes were designed for ordinary people who didn’t want to compete to meet and socialise with other locals.

As Rachel explains, “They are all my fitness family. It has been very hard work and I have sacrificed a lot but, my word, seeing all the physical and mental changes in my ladies is fantastic and it has made it all worthwhile.

“As an instructor it’s not all about being ripped with muscles, it’s about a good personality and making sure people are enjoying exercise. I sing, tell jokes and make it fun along with challenging the body and keeping the mind positive.

“My customers range from teenagers who want to build on their core & fitness for dance to over eighties who want to keep active and enjoy the company of others.

“I’m so proud of all my customers for their determination to keep so fit and positive, through all their ups and downs of life.”

David Whittley You’ve almost certainly seen the work of David Whittley. He’s the artist behind the Waterside Mural [1999] that depicts aspects of Saltash history and well-known Saltash faces on the north side of the Union pub, down at the Waterside.

Less conspicuous, maybe, are his Old Nan [recalling Picklecockle Alley] by the gate at Ashtorre Rock and three murals at the Saltash Heritage building in Lower Fore Street.

David has made his living for more than 20 years painting murals and portraits, but each new commission always takes him back to his pencils, his “first port of call”. Whether “a quick sketch to capture a moment, a study or a full-blown drawing, it is pencil,” says David, “that is the foundation of my work.”.

The work selected for his show at Ashtorre Rock samples his range of subject matter and style. David says that his favourite subject is simply life around him. Some of his drawings, however, suggest another level of fantasy and imagination. But whatever the drawing that emerges, it is an obsession with the opportunities and challenges of the medium – simply Exploring the Pencil - that continues to fascinate the drawer.

Old World or New World Wines?

Paris 1976 - The day new world wines won the taste test

brought a whole new generation in to the wine market.

Fighting back came the Old World with the brilliant Torres wines from north eastern Spain!

The Judgement of Paris – A turning point No, not the contest between three beautiful ancient Greek goddesses! But the 1976 blind tasting organised by the great wine guru Stephen Spurrier. The event shocked the French establishment by placing some top Californian wines ahead of the very best French classics!

New World was immediately on an equal footing with the Old World. (watch the film Bottleshock) We are now in a really exciting time as more and more passionate wine makers are using the natural environment to blur the Old / New divide. Factors such as altitude; proximity to the oceans and organic and biodynamic practices, combined with rare grape varieties are used to infuse real differences and distinction into their wines based more on locality than country.

We’ve all heard the terms banded about, but what do they really mean? Is it all about geography or do the wines taste different? Do the terms still apply?

The term originates from the geographical distinction from countries where winemaking supposedly first originated. Those being European states such as France, Italy, Germany, Spain, Portugal, Greece etc. The rest of the world therefore being New World: USA; South America; Australia; New Zealand; South Africa etc.… and now more recently Asia. Which is odd considering there is some evidence that China was the very first country to be producing wine as long ago as 7000BC. I wonder what it tasted like!

In the 1960s/ 70s pretty well all we drank in the UK was Old World wines, notably: Liebfraumilch from Germany; Piat D’or from France; Bull’s Blood from Hungary and Chianti in fetching wicker baskets. However, (with the exception of Liebfraumilch - dosed with sugar) affordable old world wines were lean, acidic, often tannic and lacking in fruit. Along came Australian Shiraz, and New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc, both bursting with juicy fruit, and very soon brands such as Jacobs Creek, Villa Maria, Wolf Blass and Oyster Bay dominated the market and

51 A new era begins for Saltash United as Clive Farrant has been announced as the new Chairman of the 73 year old club. Farrant has been involved with the club since 2017 as the Commercial Manager, which has seen the club, grow through club sponsorship deals and he has helped build positive relationships with local business in the area.

He will be looking to continue the recent success at the club as the Ashes finished last season with that trophywinning feeling, as they defeated Falmouth Town 1-0, in the Walter C Parson League Cup Final in May. “I would like to take this opportunity to thank the committee and our army of volunteers who work tirelessly each season to provide football at Kimberly Stadium and last but not least, you, the supporters, who ensure that together, we are UNITED. So its good luck to the lads for the coming season… “Come on you Ashes”” – Chairman Clive Farrant The club also has built a following on social media including YouTube whereby ‘AshesTV’ is used to post highlights of the recent games and interviews with the management staff and players. The ability to film and post-match highlights has drawn great praise from home and opposition fans. The club started the season with a victory in the Charity Bowl as they defeated Tavistock A.F.C 6-5 in an eleven-goal thriller, which featured a Ryan Richards hat-trick.

With the season concluded in May, the Ashes wasted no time in adding to an already strong squad with 3 additions in the likes of Josh FreemanWright, Tom Moxham and Jason Vincent.

The 2019/20 season sees the Ashes fighting in a total of 6 competitions including the prestigious

FA Cup, and your support is needed!

In the upcoming season, changes have been aplenty and this even includes the league, which has transitioned into a South West Peninsula Premier East and West Divisions. Separating the Devon and Cornish sides into different leagues.

Saltash United are placed into the South West Peninsula Premier West Division alongside teams such as Callington Town, Falmouth Town and many of Cornwall’s finest.

Furthermore, with manager Matt Cusack and assistant manager Dane Bunney at the helm, they aim for more silverware this season.

We also welcome you to not only enjoy the match, but to also experience the whole match day with all of us, as the latest Premier League action will be on show in the clubhouse. In addition, you are able to show more of your support by purchasing Ashes merchandise in the clubhouse.

get to know the hedgehog & other local wildlife Saltash Town Council are Proud to be Hedgehog Heroes! The Services Committee have approved to enroll Saltash Town Council on Hedgehog Heroes roll of honour with the British Hedgehog Preservation Society by stickering the strimmer’s, hedge cutters and lawn mowers.

The request was made of the council by local resident Chloe Hale, who is also taking part in a weekend of activities at the Tamar Valley Centre on Saturday 7 and Sunday 8 September.

On Saturday from 2-5pm come along to the Tamar Valley Centre and learn how to investigate and possibly encourage wildlife sharing your garden.

Drop-in activities will include bird box building, seed-bomb making, bug hotel building, creating bird feeders, as well as learning about hedgehogs from Chloe.

You can also take part in the self-guided Wildlife Quest (mini-orienteering around the Tamar Valley

Centre site, collecting stamps along the way).

From 7-10pm join staff from the Devon Greater Horseshoe Bat Project on a local Bat Walk, or come along to discover the Moths that live on the Drakewalls Mine site.

A choice of guided walks will be available on Sunday 8 between 10am and 2pm. If you haven’t yet tried it, immerse yourself in meditative Forest Bathing, on a short walk led by Lesley Strong.

Alternatively, discover Ferns & Lichens on a twohour guided walk in the Danescombe Valley.

Entry is free to the Wildlife Weekend, but a small charge may apply to some activities (e.g. bird boxes). Most are drop-in activities but some will require advance booking (eg walks).

Everyone is singing these days!

Almost everyone can sing, or so we are told and with the proliferation of groups all over the country, that certainly seems to be the case. Youth, Wives, OAP’s, Pop, Shanty etc. they are everywhere these days.

What you may not know is that there are groups, for both men and for ladies, which give everyone the chance to sing in close harmony. Ocean City Sound in Plymouth are offering men the chance

to sing with them for a while by introducing a six week starter/refresher course and with no auditions it’s a all stress free. Several of it’s members come from Saltash so think about joining them and give singing a try. Learning as part of a group is fun and the sound will stay with you forever!
