Nominations sought for youth award

Morgan family really enjoying their new home in Sherford

The Stannator of Plympton, Andrew Hill, is asking residents to let him know about any young people in Plympton who are deserving of a prestigious community award.

The Marjorie Lynden Award is presented at the end of each Stannator’s year in office to a deserving young person (or group) in Plympton who has done something worthy for the local community or achieved something significant.

Mrs Lynden was Plympton’s 6th modern day Stannator and served in the role in 1985/6. At the end of her time in office she donated a shield to be presented annually in recognition of youth activity and achievement in Plympton. The winner is chosen annually by whoever is Stannator at the time.

Last year’s winner was Hele’s student Morgan Lewis who received his award for his involvement in the Morvargh Sailing Project.

Other past winners have included the Starlite School of Dance who were recognised for their community entertainment, Nancy Collis and Tom Boulden for community support roles they performed and Jon Paul Oxley for his numerous fundraising activities while battling with Cystic Fibrosis.

Plymouth police are inviting the community to nominate people with disabilities in the City who deserve to win an award.

The BASH (be active, be safe, be healthy) awards include seven areas based on being active, keeping safe and staying healthy. They will recognise the winning individual/s and runners-up for their positive achievements.

Winners will each receive an award and runners-up will receive a certificate.

The awards will be held on Thursday 21 June at the Futures Inn Plymouth and nominations are open until May 28.

Diversity officer, PC Martin Whitehouse said: “I am aware that many people who live with disabilities overcome incredible challenges and the awards recognise just some of these. We are welcoming entries which help us celebrate the achievements of people with disabilities in Plymouth.”

The exciting purchase of a new home only happens a handful of times, but the chance to move into a brand new town is even rarer. Nicola Morgan, mum of four, shares the ins and outs of her Taylor Wimpey experience at the new Sherford development, from making a mark on a brand new home, to being a part of the caring community.

“We were all so excited about Sherford, a new community, a new town, and the homes are beautiful. Prior to our current home, we were based in a three bedroom cottage, but as five became six it began to feel a little too cosy.

“As much as I loved our cottage, it was missing several key features, for example there was no garden and no garage causing obvious space issues. I knew it was time to start looking for a new property, and my husband, Jason, grew up in Plymstock; we’d always wanted to return so it felt like a good time to start looking in the area.

“We decided to investigate the options at Sherford, and whilst visiting the development we were shown around our now property. As soon as I walked in I just knew.

“The bigger picture was clear in my mind; this will be our future home and we can watch our children grow with this town. I get to watch my son’s primary school being built, I look outside and see the sports pitches that my children will be playing on it’s amazing.

“Taylor Wimpey’s Help to Buy scheme made it possible for us to secure the property, as we only had to provide a 5% deposit. This meant no time was wasted and before we knew it December rolled around and it was time for the big move.

“Since then we have been absolutely loving life in our new home at Sherford, it’s such a lovely community forming; we’ve all got to know each other and all look out for one another. The Taylor Wimpey team have been amazing from start to finish, nothing was ever too much. I don’t think I will ever be able to stress just how happy I am in my new home. Taylor Wimpey ticks all boxes, with regards to space, design and excellent features.

“We all had an input into what we wanted from our new home and we definitely got everything and more with Taylor Wimpey. The girls all got a double bedroom and bathroom of their own, my son Marley got his garden and massive bedroom. Jason got his garage, his ensuite and study/man cave.

“The bigger picture was clear in my mind; this will be our future home and we can watch our children grow with this town”

“But most importantly I got my very own utility room and I love it! Well done to the designers, it’s not easy to please all six of the Morgan’s I can tell you.”

Sign up for Bubble Rush and support Children’s Hospice South West

Fundraisers from Children’s Hospice South West (CHSW) are excited about the return of the Bubble Rush to Plymouth this year. The event will take place on Sunday September 23 at Newnham Park.

Bubble Rush is a 5km, foam filled, sponsored fun run where participants run, jog or walk through different coloured bubble stations getting covered in foam of all colours along the way.

CHSW brought the event to Plymouth for the first-time last year and 1200 people took part raising £40,000 in sponsorship for the charity that supports children with life limiting illnesses and their families through its three children’s hospices.

All ages can take part in Bubble Rush making it the perfect event to get family, friends or colleagues signed up for.

Kiley Pearce, events fundraiser for CHSW said “We are really excited about bringing

the Bubble Rush back to Plymouth after the success of the first event last year.

“Bubble Rush is great fun to take part in with your friends or family and is a fantastic way of helping us to raise vital funds for our hospices which support children and families in your local community.”

CHSW is currently offering an early bird discount on ticket prices making it just £18 for adults to take part, £10 for children (from four years to 15 years) with under 4s going for free. Plymouth History Festival May 5 to June 3 Throughout Plymouth Back for its sixth year, Plymouth History Festival is an annual celebration of Plymouth’s history and heritage, and takes place across the city in a range of venues and locations.

Each year, the programme features around 100 different events including exhibitions and displays, guided walks and tours, talks, family activities and special events. This year will be exploring the themes of ‘War’, ‘Enlightenment’ and ‘Health’, marking important anniversaries linked to the Institution of Civil Engineers, the NHS and the RAF. Doggy Day Out in the Park May 12 Mount Edgcumbe House & Country Park A Doggy Day Out in the Park promises a pawsome day out for dog owners. To give you a taster of what the Doggy Day Out has in store, there’ll be a pet shopping village, doggy tea party and a pet photo booth, as well as doggy agility displays with the chance for your dog to be involved. If your pup hasn’t quite got the hang of who’s in charge yet, there will be obedience training workshops with Q&As to give them a few pointers. There will also be the chance to show off what tricks your pet can do in the ‘Pets Got Talent’ competition.

Britain’s Ocean City Half Marathon May 20 Plymouth Hoe In partnership with Plymouth City Council, Britain’s Ocean City Half Marathon is a challenging, yet scenic 13.1 mile course taking in Plymouth’s famous landmarks.

Kingdom Come May 18 Several Plymouth churches are supporting the global prayer initiative called Thy Kingdom Come which takes place between May 10 and 20. A night of unhindered worship and prayer will take place at Mutley Baptist Church from 7.30pm to 9.30pm. Churches involved are Mutley Baptist, St Andrew’s, St Matthias, Plymouth Christian Centre, Plymouth Central Methodist Hall, Redeemer Church and Plymouth Vineyard Church. Firepower Day May 25 Crownhill Fort Now in its fourth year, Firepower Day is an established highlight of the Plymouth History Festival. See the Fort’s armament in action, as well as plenty of gunfire from rifles, field guns and cannons.

Green Man Festival May 26 and 27 Mount Edgcumbe House & Country Park The Green Man is back for its fifth year, bringing the rebirth of the natural world with him. Created by artists and volunteers, this massive figure will preside over a joyous two day event celebrated by the bands Black Friday and Harbottle and Jonas. This free family festival includes such wonders as medieval knights in shining armour, archery for all, a celebration of British wildlife, circus acts, hog roasts, the ArrowBarrows, Lodestone Morris and a mixture of food and craft stalls. There may even be a Viking attack or two…

Boringdon Gin Festival May 27 Boringdon Hall Hotel Join in the fun at Boringdon Hall Hotel for the annual Gin Festival on the Boringdon Hall Lawn and enjoy the finest gin accompanied by food stands, live music and outdoor activities and games including lawn chess, croquet, archery and air rifles. 2017 saw gin stands to include Tarquins Gin, Pinkster Gin, Beefeater Gin, Plymouth Gin, and many more, and 2018 won’t disappoint. Flavour Fest Jun 1 - 3 Armada Way Returning for its 15th year, Flavour Fest is the South West’s largest free food and drink festival. With nearly 100 stalls and an exciting programme on the chef stage, there will be something new to taste or experience whether you’re a novice chef or a food connoisseur. The star of the chef stage this year is MasterChef judge and presenter John Torode, who will be cooking on stage as well as hosting a book signing of his latest cookery book. Throughout the weekend, you’ll be able to pick up some great tips and inspiration from the line up of local and celebrity chefs.

Gin Festival Plymouth 2018 Jun 29 Plymouth Pavilions The UK’s first, biggest and best gin festival is making it’s first visit to Plymouth and there’s going to be enormous variety of different gins. As well as the opportunity to try a huge variety of gins from all over the world (including exclusive gins you won’t see anywhere else), there will be live music, great food and a gin cocktail bar. There will also be gin masterclasses, and the opportunity to meet gin distillers in person, try free samples and chat about their gin.

Plymouth Armed Forces Day 2018 Jun 30 The Hoe Celebrate Plymouth’s proud military tradition at the annual Armed Forces Day, which this year will also be commemorating the RAF’s 100th anniversary.

It will showcase the services with static and arena displays and parades. The exciting arena programme will return this year, with a highlight being the Field Gun competitions and the Parade of Standards will see cadets and veterans alike march across the Hoe Promenade. There will also be military vehicles, equipment and static helicopters on display to see up close as well as the opportunity to meet the Royal Navy, Army, Marines, RAF and veterans’ organisations in a variety of villages set out across the Hoe. Plymouth Model Show Jun 30 Plymouth Guildhall Come along to the annual scale model show. Two large displays will commemorate 100 years since WWI finished and also the centenary of the Royal Air Force. There will be static and radio control models, model railways and a variety of displays from South West model clubs and winner model clubs from Brittany. A model competition is also taking place during the day. The cafe sells hot and cold food and there will be a tombola running throughout the event.

What’s That Noise?

June 16 - July 6 Soapbox Children’s Theatre. 11am and 1.30pm. There is a squeak and a tantalising toot, a crisp crash and a hilarious hoot. Where does it come from? What does it mean? A whispered word and a scrumptious scream!

Listen to the noises that come out of the horn, can you guess from where they were born? The sound collectors are listening and gathering up a cacophony of sounds to put into the sound machine. Fun, visual and interactive, this piece of theatre will be a joy to all the senses.

Children celebrate Down Syndrome day The 21st day of the third month - 21st March - each year is used to mark World Down Syndrome Day. People with Down Syndrome have one extra chromosone on the 21st pair, they have 3 rather than 2, hence Trisomy 21.

Children at Plympton St Mary’s Infant School have been celebrating this special day by wearing ‘lots of socks’. There were socks in hair, socks on hands, socks stuck on t-shirts and hats - socks everywhere!

St Mary’s have four children in their school with Down Syndrome and every year take part in the special day. This year they have raised £150 for the Association.

Children took part in a special assembly where they learned more about what Down Syndrome is. They linked this to all that they have learned about respect and how we are all unique and special.

Their friends with Down Syndrome have lots of special talents that they share with the school community. Most importantly, the school’s core value is love and that is what inclusion is all about.

Rowans site nears completion A new affordable housing development on the site of the former Downham Special School is nearing completion.

Named the Rowans and located off Horn Lane in Plymstock, the development features 28 new homes of which 14 are affordable.

Following Downham’s move to Estover in 2012, the school was subsequently demolished and the 0.54 hectare site was released by Plymouth City Council for housing as part of an on-going strategy to provide new, good quality and energy efficient homes for Plymouth.

The council received a large number of offers for the site but in 2014, ethical housing developer and landlord Aster Group’s plan for the development was accepted.

Construction of the new development started in April 2016 with the first affordable homes due for completion shortly.

Councillor Patrick Nicholson, Deputy Leader of Plymouth City Council and cabinet member for Strategic Housing, Transport and Planning, said: “This housing development has been finished to the very highest standard and I am looking forward to seeing people move into their brand new homes.

“This is yet another example of where we as a council have turned an old and empty building into homes that are so needed for the people of Plymouth.”

Fire service praised after containing effects of burst water main

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue service have been praised after minimising the effects of a burst water main in Plympton.

The main in Cot Hill at the junction with Merafield Close ruptured on March 21 sending a large flow of water cascading down the hill.

Quite a bit of it ended up going into Underlane due to the gradient of the road and down the drives and into a couple of the garages at that junction.

The fire service attended the scene where they set up a boom across the road with their hoses to divert the water into the mains drains and built barriers to curtail the flow of water down the drives of affected properties.

Stannator of Plympton Andrew Hill witnessed the problem and praised the actions of the fire service, saying: “The fire service personnel did a commendable job, bringing the incident quickly under control and minimising the effect on local properties.”

The Stannator’s praise of the fire service was echoed by local resident Fi Banks who lives in one of the properties whose garage took the brunt of the escaping water.

Mrs Banks said in a posting on social media: “The fire brigade were amazing.”South West Water subsequently isolated the water supply to stop the escape of water while contractors sought to carry out a repair to the pipework and reinstate some minor damage to the road surface. A small number of properties were left without water for a while.

Survey works planned for eastern corridor

Further survey and investigative works in support of the Eastern Corridor Junction Improvements scheme are taking place.

Work started on April 16 and is due to finish on April 27, the works will allow Plymouth City Council to better understand the ground conditions in the area between Marsh Mills roundabout and the Glen Road junction at the eastern end of Plymouth Road.

Contractors will be pinpointing the exact location of utility equipment and assessing the condition of the drainage system at Marsh Mills, all of which will help firm up the design for the scheme and avoid delays and setbacks at a later date.

In order to avoid congestion during the day, some of the works will be carried out overnight from 7pm to 6am. During these times, lane closures will be required to enable the works to be carried out safely.

This will include the ground investigation works on the eastbound carriageway of Plymouth Road at the Cot Hill junction which will take two nights, the drainage survey at Marsh Mills which is planned for three nights and surveys for utilities in the central verge between the Larkham Lane and Cot Hill junctions for one night.

Investigative works will also be carried out on the pavements at Larkham Lane and Coypool Road.

Meanwhile, new signage at the junction of Glen Road and Plymbridge Road will be installed later this month. It is not anticipated that this will cause disruption.

Children enjoy Sherford egg hunt

Easter came early at Sherford, with children and families visiting the new community to take part in the town’s first Easter Egg hunt over the weekend.

Hosted by the team from Sherford’s first primary school, Sherford Vale, with the help of volunteers from Sherford’s church team, children took to the town’s gardens and show homes in the search for elusive Easter treats, donated by the Sherford Consortium.

Children also took part in the town’s first Easter bonnet competition, while parents also had the opportunity to find out about the new primary school from its head teacher, Helen Tipping.

Gardeners to stage show tips evening Plympton Gardeners Association will be holding an information evening on Thursday May 3.

Called ‘Welcome to the Show’ the evening aims to provide useful tips to those thinking of exhibiting at future shows. Plympton Gardeners stage two village show type events each year.

These are events which are open for the public to enter and exhibit, not only horticultural produce, such as flowers and vegetables, but also handicrafts, preserves and baking in the domestic science section, floral art and junior exhibits.

The forthcoming evening aims to raise awareness of how to make an entry into a show, what the process to follow is for someone wanting to exhibit an item they have grown, made, baked, etc. at a local show.

Subjects to be covered include how to take flowers or vegetables from the garden and turn them into suitable exhibits for judging and how to display produce and craftwork.

The information evening will start at 7pm at Harewood House where the Association will try to remove any mystique about the exhibiting process and encourage people to take part in the Association’s future shows.

The evening will not only provide useful

tips on growing flowers and vegetables, it will also include handicraft, floral art, and domestic science.

Advice and information sheets will be available for the various sections. Show secretary Paul Hutchings said: “It is important for the Plympton Gardeners Association that we encourage youngsters to take part and we have a junior section with classes for children aged from four years through to 16 years.

“In recent years the ‘black magic’ and secrecy of knowledge regarding how high quality prize winning exhibits were produced has been replaced with an openness and supportive attitude from experienced growers, makers and bakers who have enjoyed taking part in the shows over the years and are happy sharing their experience and knowledge with others.

PGA see their shows as exhibitions of horticulture, craft and skill rather than a competition with winners and losers.”

The Plympton Gardeners Association was founded in 1948 to promote gardening and to assist members in improving their gardening skills. This has developed through the years to a position where they try to share their collective knowledge of gardening with the public through shows and events. Two sections of bus lane are to be removed from Plymouth Road as part of the Council’s Eastern Corridor Junction Improvement scheme.

The bus lane outside the Lidl store could be taken out and the lane at Coypool Road shortened under the scheme which aims to reduce journey times for drivers and improve pedestrian safety and facilities for cyclists whilst upgrading the traffic signal equipment.

Detailed traffic modelling work has been carried out along this popular commuter route and supports removing the lanes to ease traffic flow and cut queues.

Councillor Patrick Nicholson, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Strategic Transport, Housing and Planning said: “Plymouth Road is a key route for people travelling into the city from the east and it has seen a lot of changes over the year. By removing these small sections, we hope this will make the traffic flow more easily.”

The council is publishing a number of Traffic Regulations Orders to support the proposals for the scheme including a new mini-roundabout at the Cot Hill/Merafield Road junction. The following changes are included: • Removal of the bus lane between the junctions of Larkham Lane and Cot Hill on the westbound Plymouth Road carriageway • Shortening of the bus lane at Coypool Road on the westbound Plymouth Road carriageway • New yellow box junctions on Plymouth Road at the junctions of Marsh Mills, Woodford Avenue, Cot Hill and Larkham Lane • New pedestrian crossings at Plymouth Road at the Woodford Avenue and Larkham Lane and junctions • New waiting restriction on Longbridge Road and at the Cot Hill at Merafield Road junction The proposals will reduce the journey times of users along Plymouth Road and Cot Hill, update the traffic signal controlled junctions and pedestrian crossings with modern equipment and provide pedestrian and cyclist improvements supporting the growth of the city and the new homes and jobs that are planned for Plympton over the next 15 years.

A school expansion project totalling £220,000 has just been completed at Oreston Community Academy.

Plymouth City Council identified Oreston as part of its basic need programme and agreed capital funding to support the additional places to cope with an increase in local demand. As a result Oreston will be able to take 60 children in reception each year in order to reach a maximum capacity of 420 pupils over the next two years.

Replacing an old conservatory, the extension has created three new teaching areas for Key Stage 1 and Foundation pupils. They now have a dedicated ‘Workshop’ room for creative activities in which they can paint as well as play with water and sand plus an expanded reading area and room for teaching small groups.

The project has also created a full size Key Stage 2 classroom from two smaller rooms, new carpeting for the main corridor, drainage repairs and new kitchen equipment.

The new catering equipment has enabled the reorganisation of the kitchen area making it more streamlined and enabling kitchen staff to deliver school meals much more efficiently.

Head teacher Mark Ackers said: “It was so important to us that the process of expansion

Hundreds of mourners pay tribute to Ellis Daw, founder of Dartmoor Zoo 10

Ellis Daw, the man who founded the original Dartmoor Wildlife Park at Sparkwell - which later become Dartmoor Zoo - has died aged 89.

Mr Daw moved to Sparkwell in 1948 and the village was to become his home for almost 70 years until ill health forced a decision to move into a care home near Brixton in 2017.

During his near seven decades in the village he became one of Sparkwell’s most colourful and well-known characters. All Saints Church was packed out for his funeral on March 14.

A sunlit sky with loud birdsong in the air punctuated by the howling of wolves from the nearby Dartmoor Zoo in the background provided a most apt setting as mourners filed into the church for the funeral of a man who had shown a keen interest in the welfare of animals from the age of five.

The funeral procession set off from Mr Daw’s former home at the Zoo and proceeded to the nearby All Saints Church in Sparkwell where his coffin was led into the church to the song ‘Fields of Gold’ by Sting.

The congregation heard that Mr Daw could be a stubborn and determined man who was not always easy to get on with and who had an uneasy relationship with officialdom.

Mr Daw’s grandson Gary recited memories of his own times at the wildlife park with his grandfather. Among the occasions he remembered was a visit by a zoo inspector who was not happy that a moat at the park had not been drained and refilled.

Gary explained how he watched his grandfather challenge the inspector’s views by lowering a cup on a piece of string into the moat, after which Mr Daw pulled it back up and drank the contents in front of the inspector to demonstrate his belief that the water quality was fine.

The funeral service was conducted by the Prebendary Robert Harris from the Plympton Team Ministry and the opening hymn was ‘All Things Bright and Beautiful’.

Among the congregation was Benjamin Mee to whom the wildlife park site was sold in 2006 enabling it to be resurrected as Dartmoor Zoo. Those at the service heard from Mr Daw’s friend and former neighbour Catherine on how Sparkwell became Mr Daw’s favourite location of all the places he lived in his life and that he had involved himself in community events and served on the Parish Council for many years.

In a soundtrack which typified Mr Daw’s unconventional character his coffin was led out to a song he himself had chosen for his funeral - ‘Ain’t It Grand To Be Blooming Well Dead.’

Flowers at the service included one which captured Mr Daw’s love of big cats, of which the Dartmoor Wildlife Park once boasted the biggest collection in the South West. Mr Daw’s ashes are expected to be buried at Dartmoor Zoo near a large inscribed granite stone he had installed on the site before he sold it.

Mr Daw had a life-long love of guinea pigs and he still had a collection of around a dozen of them when he was into his eighties, long after he sold the wildlife park.

After moving to Sparkwell in 1948 where his family farmed 30 head of Guernsey cross cattle, the young Mr Daw’s own collection of animals increased to include badgers, foxes, rabbits and lambs and one weekend while his parents were away he also dug out a pond.

After a while it was suggested he start charging people to come and see his animals and thus led to the birth of the Dartmoor Wildlife Park in 1968. On the first day 48 people from the village and surrounding area turned up for the opening. At its height the wildlife park was to go on and be the home to more than 200 animals and to give countless hours of enjoyment to children and adults alike.

Mr Daw was also involved in the Home Guard as a teenager and in early adulthood got involved in stock car racing, experiences he wrote about in a book he published called ‘From the Lamb to the Tiger’ which also covered his time creating and running the Dartmoor Wildlife Park.

One of the many people to visit the wildlife park over the years was John Northey. He still has a vivid memory of his visit and meeting Mr Daw: “I met him once on visit to his zoo and as our party were admiring a tigress through the wire netting she turned her back on us,” recalled Mr Northey, adding: “Mr Daw told us to stand well back or we could be taking an unwanted shower!”

Mr Daw was interviewed on Hospital Radio Plymouth in 2012 after his book was launched. During that programme he described breeding his first tiger as being the highlight of his time at the park.

He also commented on how visitors enjoyed being able to photograph tigers in the open, separated from the public by a wide moat rather than being behind bars or glass and how children had memorable hands on encounters with young tiger cubs.

Preparations underway for Plympton’s May Fair Plympton Community Council are busy preparing to stage their annual May Fair on Saturday May 12.

The event will include stalls both inside and immediately outside Harewood House and there will be an arena in the car park behind the library where an assortment of live entertainment will take place during the day.

The event will be opened by Stannator of Plympton Andrew Hill at 10am. At the time of going to press there was still some pitch space available for booking and the Community Council were especially looking for more game type stalls and youth groups to be involved. Anyone wishing to enquire about having a stall should e-mail Pauline Kadoche at pollykadoche@hotmail.co.uk This year’s May Fair will be the first without the traditional May Queen and attendants as these roles have now been disbanded and replaced with a Youth Ambassador to bring things more into the modern era.

Superheroes for Academy’s World Book Day The annual event was delayed this year as many schools were closed due to the snow.

The staff and students also raised over £60 by selling cakes in school. The money will be used to buy bean bags for the schools Learning Resource Centre.

During lessons staff shared their own positive experiences of reading by reading aloud from their favourite novel. Pupils listened to a variety of extracts from classics such as Pride and Prejudice and more modern novels such as the popular Tom Gates series.

Two students who achieved 100% in their Accelerated Reading Quiz, designed to improve pupils progress and enjoyment of reading, Luke Benney and Ashlee Congdon, agreed it was a very enjoyable day.

Luke said: “Reading opens your mind.”

Fellow Year 7 student Ashlee said: “Reading is great because you can travel the world by turning a page.”

Eloise Trevor, who helped with the cake sale said it was a thoroughly enjoyable day. “I love reading and getting lost in the story.”

A blue light day will he held at Plympton Fire Station from 10am to 4pm on Saturday May 5. It is being jointly organised by Plympton neighbourhood beat manager PC Greg Rendle and Fire Service watch manager Neil Willmott.

This free event will have the fire service demonstrating numerous pieces of equipment, as well as attendance by the Coastguard.

The police section will involve a police car and crime prevention stand, a police dog and police museum van. There will also be an ambulance and lots of other activities including a bouncy castle and BBQ. There will be a raffle to raise funds for a defibrillator on Ridgeway and also to raise funds for the prostate cancer charity and the firefighters’ charity.

His wife Nancy became MP for Plymouth Sutton in 1919 and made history as the first woman MP to sit in the Commons. Nancy later gave 3 Elliot Terrace to the city as a residence for future Lord Mayors.

The Stannator and his party were shown around the property by the very knowledgeable mace bearer Steve Mallinson who explained the historic significance of various artefacts, antiques and photographs

in the property, many of which date from the Astors’ time.

The party were also able to go out onto the balcony to enjoy an elevated view out over Plymouth Sound.

Plympton Youth Ambassador Isaac Hudson presented the Lord Mayor with a bouquet of flowers and Stannator Andrew Hill presented her with a signed copy of John Boulden’s book ‘Plympton’s Past in Pictures’ as a token of appreciation for the visit.

Other parties of between 10 and 15 people can book visits to Elliot Terrace for a guided tour and the venue is also available for hire for corporate events as well as civil ceremonies and partnerships for which it is a licensed venue.

Candidates sought to be Plympton’s next Youth Ambassador

Applications are now being invited from among Plympton’s 14 to 18 year old residents to become the town’s next Youth Ambassador.

The role of Youth Ambassador was created last year and Isaac Hudson who was the first person to hold the role is now nearing the end of his 12 months in office.

Isaac has attended many civic events and other public functions. He took part in the Remembrance Day march in Plympton where he proudly wore his grandfather’s service medals and among other things he handed out prizes to winners in the Rotary Club of Plympton’s Youth Speaks event.

He has also engaged with Plympton Academy and the Royal British Legion about youth events and has shown a keen interest in mental health issues affecting young people. The winning candidate takes office from mid June 2018 for a year and is invested at a formal ceremony at Harewood House on the same evening the new Stannator is sworn into office.

An exciting new business officially opens in Plymstock in May with a completely unique concept.

The Rejoovenate Creative Workspace is the brainchild of Justine Duncan, who lives in Turnchapel. The DIY, arts and crafts, gallery and shop opens on Saturday May 5 in one of the units at the old Hangars at Mount Batten.

Australian Justine moved to Plymouth from Brisbane nearly five years ago so that her husband Rob - who hails from the city - could be nearer to his elderly mother. The couple met when Rob was living in Australia.

Justine originally qualified in fashion design and went on to become a Bachelor of Japanese studies. She spent many years in corporate roles for most of her professional career, but eventually decided to leave all that behind to return to her creative roots.

Justine said: "I have always been very creative, constantly making things or creating things whenever I could. My passion is to take old items of home décor and turn them into new and unique ones."

Having helped Rob to set up in business, she decided that the time was right for her to launch her own enterprise.

She acquired the unit at Mount Batten in December, kitting it out with workbenches and other materials ahead of a 'soft' opening in February.

Justine said: "It is amazing! It's like a real life, creative Pinterest and an Aladdin’s cave of treasures for anyone and everyone and provides a completely new concept for the home décor, arts and crafts sector."

With the tag line of Reuse Recycle Recreate, the focus is on reducing the impact on the environment by Rejoovenating household items instead of throwing them out and buying new.

“We moved to Plymstock almost three years ago, and ever since we have seen a steady decline in usage of the Broadway and shops and facilities closing on a weekly basis. To have some new destinations within walking distance would be a major enhancement to us.

“A local gym would be amazing and save local people lots of journeys into the city centre, and of course a new pub that hopefully will offer not just a decent beer but a decent option for dining out both in the daytime and evening. This is something that we sadly lack in Plymstock compared to other areas of Plymouth.

“Lets not see the Broadway die completely, and get this application approved and moving as a matter of urgency.”

Antony Lake: “This will bring the Broadway back to life. All for it. Can’t happen soon enough.”

Sharron Dudley: “Many shops on the Broadway are empty. This is a large space and will only be filled by a small number of businesses. Things will not get better on the broadway unless more of the units are filled, these businesses will encourage the public to visit.”

A number of local residents objected to the idea of a public house in the Broadway, mainly on the grounds of noise and potential anti-social behaviour at night.

Broadway pub plan for former Co-op store Planners were due to decide on proposals to convert the former Co-op in Plymstock Broadway into a public house, gym and clinic as the Chronicle went to press.

Speculation that the public house would be a Wetherspoons has yet to be confirmed, but would be welcomed by many local residents.

The 32,000 square feet Co-op building has been empty for more than four years and many residents believe it has contributed to the decline in business in the Broadway.

Thirteen residents commented on the plans - with eight in favour and five objecting to the proposal.

Geography guru Bob Digby provides students with advice on how to achieve exam success Plymstock School has hosted a Sixth Form Revision Conference with special guest speaker, Bob Digby, former president of the Geographical Association.

Bob taught Geography for 24 years across three schools and also spent 11 years in three universities as a PGCE Geography Tutor, all while regularly contributing to the Geography Review and writing a number of articles on the 2012 Olympics and urban regeneration.

As a prominent figure involved in developing the Edexcel A Level materials, including the textbooks for the current specification, Bob was a huge help to the students from Plymstock School, who were joined by others from Coombe Dean and Kingsbridge School.

The conference was divided into three sessions, each covering different topics. The first session throughout the morning was named ‘Looking ahead to the first exam’ and involved an overview of how to prepare for the Geography exams as well as what each exam covered.

There was also a focus on the assessment objectives to help students understand how to get the best marks possible.

The second session was more focused on

the Paper Three, in which students’ skills are assessed through an issues-based approach.

Students were involved in workshop style activities to work in more of a synoptic way.

Thirdly, students got the opportunity to look more closely at ‘difficult topics’ that may pose more of a challenge for students.

Students were able to express which areas they found more difficult, and ultimately the Carbon Cycle and the Water Cycle were chosen as the focus of the session.

One of the main aims of the conference was to encourage people to go away and really start getting to grips with the subject by revising. Although enjoying a subject (especially at A Level) is incredibly important, much of the day was based instead on the students being equipped to get the best grades possible through a focus on exam skills.

Plymstock School student, Ben Wright, who is in his second year of studying Geography said: “Being a very educated and experienced geographer, Bob’s speech enabled me to grasp a strong understanding of the exam paper which allows me to prepare in a more effective way.”

When asked about the recent change in A

Levels to make them more difficult, Bob said: “The new A levels are demanding – but I think once you understand the rules by which the papers are set and marked then they become something that all students can cope with.”

He also gave students five ‘Top Tips’. These were especially important for students undertaking the Edexcel Geography A Level, however they were applicable for any students approaching exams this year. These were: • Revise, and soon. Don’t try and pretend it will all go away – because it won’t!

• Get the timing right within each exam paper

• Read the question fully • Plan • Answer the question!

One of the teachers who helped to organise the day, said: “It was a pleasure to host Bob Digby at Plymstock School and we were pleased to be able to open the opportunity to Kingsbridge School and Coombe Dean. The new Geography A-level examinations being sat by our year 13 students this year are extremely demanding so it was great to have Bob’s wealth of experience within the field of Geography and his insight into examination processes.”

Plymstock School student meets the Queen

A student from Plymstock school has been given the rare opportunity to meet the Queen during the recent Royal Visit to Plymouth.

The Queen was visiting Plymouth to decommission the Royal Navy flagship HMS Ocean at HM Naval Base Devonport, which was originally commissioned back in 1998.

As part of her 20 years of service to the Royal Navy, HMS Ocean was involved in operations in Sierra Leone, Libya, as well as helping to provide security for the Olympics in London in 2012. Despite being a particularly sombre day for many, with some describing the decommissioning of the ship as ‘saddening’, there was a strong focus on looking forward to the future.

One of those who definitely experienced the excitement of the day was Amber Platt, an 18 year old studying her A Levels at Plymstock School. Amber was invited to greet the Queen on her arrival in the Royal Sovereign train at Plymouth Train Station alongside a crowd of schoolchildren.

Despite her nerves, Amber’s opportunity to present the Queen with a bunch of posies all went smoothly, and she described meeting the Queen as an ‘honour’. After this ‘absolutely indescribable experience’, she said she was ‘overwhelmed because you only ever see the queen in the media, and to have met her in real life and presented her with a posie

as she entered Plymouth was just amazing.’

In 2017 Amber was picked, out of all the cadet forces in Plymouth, to be the Lord Mayor’s Cadet. Since the Lord Mayor’s own son attended Amber’s Cadet Squadron as a young cadet, it seemed fitting to choose a cadet from the same squadron to be by her side.

Ever since being named Lord Mayor’s Cadet, Amber has been given the opportunity to partake in many once-in-a-lifetime

experiences - of which meeting the Queen will simply enhance.

Amber’s mum, Tracey Platt, said she was incredibly proud of Amber for taking part in such a huge and once-in-a-lifetime event.

She also also expressed how honoured she felt to be part of the platform party meaning she also got the opportunity to see the Queen.

Plymstock School has this year partnered up with Lycée de l’Iroise in Brest to provide students with an exchange programme.

The aim of the programme is to completely immerse students from both Plymouth and Brest in another culture and language.

For Plymstock’s students, who are all studying GCSE French, this provides endless opportunities to develop their language skills.

After months of organising the trips, the group of French students were finally able to visit the UK during a week long visit in March.

During this visit, substantially funded by an Erasmus grant, students were given the opportunity to stay with an English family, being completely immersed into the normal life of Plymstock’s own students.

Many of the week’s activities were aimed at helping students understand some of British history, with a special focus on Plymouth’s role. They got the chance to visit the National Marine Aquarium, as well as fun activities such as visiting Drake Circus shopping centre and the ‘Adrenaline’ park.

They also took part in a beach clean to learn more about pollution in our seas and the detrimental effects it can have on wildlife, since one of the key themes of Erasmus was Maritime Citizens of the Future.

All of the students involved in the exchange programme had a wonderful time, with many of the French students encouraging anyone else who had the opportunity to take part.

Alexandre said it was ‘a beautiful idea to meet the people of the world and also discover a different culture and improve our English level’.

Another of the French students, Lisa, who stayed with Sophie and her family said that visiting her partner was an especially exciting experience, and told us: “Throughout the trip, we became best friends, we love the same things and I’m glad to have her as a pen friend.”

Another of the students, Kolen, was excited for the programme to continue, commenting: “I’m looking forward to their coming to Brest to talk and visit Brest with me.”

Programme leader at Plymstock School, Jonathan Downes, felt that the opportunities for students provided by the exchange are varied and highly valuable. “The fact that young people from Plymouth and our twin city of Brest are able to meet, become friends and authentically experience family and school life is invaluable,” he said. “Of course¨ the linguistic benefits are huge too.”

Everyone sang Easter songs too and to mark the arrival of spring the children created different types of spring inspired artwork.

Tracey said: “We’ve had a very colourful time at the nursery celebrating Easter and spring and now have lots of lovely bright artwork adorning the walls. The children have had a great time making their Easter bonnets and getting creative.

“I am only relieved that I wasn’t in the hot seat when it came to judging the winning entries.”

Women on the march

To mark the centenary of votes for women, around 100 placard-bearing women wearing sashes will be marching through Plymouth, some wearing period costume from the last ten decades.

The marchers will assemble at North Hill on Wednesday May 9 and will walk to Plymouth City Council Offices where they will be met by the Lord Mayor, Councillor Wendy Foster.

Plymouth Soroptimist Hilary Preston is organising the march and has compiled a list of 100 women who have achieved a ‘first’ during the last century. The list includes local notable names such as Lady Nancy Astor, Dame Aggie Weston and Dr Mabel Ramsay.

Hilary said: “We hope to get at least 100 women on the march who will each carry a placard with the name of one of the great female achievers from the last century. Astronomer Patrick Moore inspires city’s young poets A poetry competition organised by staff at Plympton Academy, to remember the late astronomer Patrick Moore, has received almost 100 entries.

Young people from across Plymouth put pen to paper and sent in their poems inspired by the astronomers own poetry. The winning five were presented with their medals and their prize by Lord Mayor Wendy Foster and her consort Cllr Ken Foster.

The competition was suggested by a friend of Sir Patrick. Sandra Saer also edited a book of poems by the late astronomer about a woodland glade and the animals that lived there. They included a rabbit, a field mouse and a rather musical rat!

Mrs Saer said: “As an old friend, Sir Patrick gave me these poems for my company, SMH Books, to publish. I was delighted to read the winning entries of this poetry competition and have sent Plympton Academy copies of Sir Patrick’s ‘Within The Glade’ book as a further prize to reward these students’ efforts!”

Sir Patrick Moore passed away in 2012 but his legacy remains. Plympton Academy teacher Martin Edmonds said: “Through his hundreds of books, and the people he encouraged, he is still inspiring young people around the world today. It was marvellous to read so many poems by Plymouth students and to see the time and effort they had spent writing about new animals for Sir Patrick’s glade.”

Get in shape for the big race Thousands of people have signed up for Britain’s Ocean City Half Marathon on Sunday May 20 - and there is still time to enter, with registration closing on April 29.

Ahead of the event Plymouth Marjon University will be running (pun intended) a preparation workshop for the event.

The workshop is particularly aimed at inexperienced runners, but the content will also be relevant and useful for experienced runners.

The workshop aims to help participants to finish the half marathon, perform well, and enjoy the experience. The workshop will be delivered by sport science and psychology experts, using the latest research, and it will cover:

This is a wonderful time of worship with the traditional contents of a Methodist Service with a modern joyful twist. Members of the Prayer Team are available for you to speak with at the close of the service. You are then invited to go into the Hall for hot drinks and biscuits. This is a great opportunity to meet some of the members of this church and stay for the Messy Activities or just relax and have a chat over a hot drink.

Messy Church - begins at 10.30am with a session of arts, crafts, fun and mess in the Hall for everyone, regardless of age or ability. It is a really friendly, welcoming group with lots of stories to tell about living through different situations and stages, as Christians. Some of the members may well be in their latter years, but have fabulous personalities and lots to share. They enjoy each other’s company and are most definitely young at heart! Woodford Men’s Meeting 10am (2nd and 4th Wednesday month) The Men’s Meeting, welcome any men who wish to join this convivial group. Pins & Needles Knitting Club 2.30pm (1st and 3rd Wednesday of the month). This traditional hobby has bounced right back up in the popularity charts. People of varying ages are now picking up knitting needles and are all most welcome to come and join this group, which hand-produce and send knitted goods such as jumpers, blankets and hats for poor children in two areas of Romania and are sometimes asked to produce adult hats for Shekinah Mission, asylum seekers and refugees. One of the members makes cardigans, hats and small blankets for the Neo-natal Unit at Derriford Hospital. It doesn’t matter if you have been knitting for years, or have never seen a ball of wool before the group will openly welcome you and share their knowledge and skills! ‘Woodys’ Youth Group 6pm-8pm. A new group set up for the community by the church. Sign up for WALK IT Plymouth is one of just eight cities hosting a fund-raising walk for national charity Crohn's and Colitis UK.

The annual WALK IT event takes place on May 5 on The Hoe and organisers are hoping that hundreds of people will take part.

Walkers will explore the city's sights over a 5km or 10km circuit before returning to the event village at The Hoe for a great afternoon of fun, food and entertainment.

WALK IT fundraisers make a huge difference and this year Crohn’s & Colitis UK are challenging walkers to get sponsored and WALK IT – together with family or friends – to raise £100 or more. This could help pay for 2,000 people to get the information they need about Crohn’s and Colitis.

Laira Youth Band (Thursdays 7.15pm). The Laira Youth Brass Band started in 1972 from the members of the Sunday school at Laira Congregational Church, it has performed hundreds of concerts over the years, in every corner of the City and beyond. Scores of children have passed through its ranks. Most were taught to read music and to play their instrument whilst in the Band, and many have continued their musical hobby into adult life, some choosing a professional career in music. Rockfest raises record amount Rock not only raised the roof but an amazing amount for St Luke’s Hospice Plymouth at the annual live music extravaganza Rockfest over the Easter weekend.

The two-day event saw 20 bands, including Rusty Angels, Funky Munks and Phoenix, play for no fee at Plymouth’s Crash Manor, attracting a big crowd and resulting in £12,635 raised to help St Luke’s continue caring for patients at the end of life – a record amount for Rockfest in the ten years it has been supporting the charity.

Cuz Cussen from Mutley is the force behind Rockfest, which he started 17 years ago, fundraising for various charities close to his heart. It was following the death of his beloved mum Dot, in May 2008, that he decided to donate all the money raised each year to St Luke’s.

During the last few months of her life, Dot received care from St Luke’s and spent her last few days at the specialist unit at Turnchapel. Seeing first hand the dedication and compassion of the team

Clog dancing Thursdays A fun way to exercise! The Plymouth Maids clog dancers are a small, friendly group of women who welcome new members. From the beginning of October to the end of April we practice at St Bartholomew’s Church Hall, opposite the Life Centre, on Thursdays 8 - 9.45pm. “It’s absolutely fantastic to have raised this record amount for St Luke’s in our tenth year, bringing our total to £90,000.”

Receiving the cheque from Cuz, St Luke’s community and events fundraising manager Nina Wearne said: “Cuz works tirelessly to make Rockfest the big success it is.

These meetings start 10.30am and end at 1pm, many buses stop outside the Co-op and if you come by car parking is usually available. We also have regular social meetings and would like to advise everyone that these will now be held at the Oak Villa Sports & Social Club in Ferndale Road, Plymouth (PL2 2EL) just down the road from Weston Mill Cemetery. The No 13 Target Travel bus stops quite near it, and there is a large car park virtually next door to the hall. These meetings are from 2pm to 4pm and we supply a very good buffet and as with all of our meetings we do have a raffle. Members of our group have free access but non-members will be asked to pay £2. Anyone intending to come regularly to these meetings would find it more economical to pay the £12 single £20 double annual membership fee, and would also be eligible to take advantage of our subsidised taxi scheme (£2 each way). Routeways Centre is a Plymouth Charity supporting children, young people and their families to overcome disadvantage.

First established in 1997 the charity continues to support families in Plymouth to overcome disadvantage. They provide services from the Beckly Centre in Plymstock and Devonport Park Activity Centre.

Routeways offer inclusive, challenging activities: horticulture, outdoor education (moor/gorge walking, rock-scrambling), cooking, crafts, creative play etc to promote physical and mental well-being.

The organisation relies heavily on donations, grants and gifts to keep its services running and an amazing team of volunteers have set themselves a personal challenge… they are training hard to get ready for Britain’s Ocean City Half Marathon on May 20.

They are running to raise funds to help Routeways support more families and to widen the range of activities they offer, at the Devonport Park Activity Centre. Although based in Devonport the charity supports families from all over Plymouth.

The dedicated team running the half marathon are: Dave Williams sons regularly attend activities at the Devonport Park Activity Centre. Dave said “I’m running the half marathon in Plymouth in May to raise funds for Routeways. This organisation helps support disabled children and their families. This includes weekly clubs and much needed adventure days out during the holidays to give families a break…This is not going to be easy for me as I have only just started training and have been sat on my bum for years” Jade Wall is also running the half-marathon, although she struggles with her training regime we know her determination and drive will get her Plymouth Radio Club Second Tuesday of every month.

Work of young artists on display The Lord Mayor of Plymouth, Councillor, Wendy Foster, has officially opened Plympton Rotary’s annual Young Artist Exhibition and Young Photographer Competition taking place in the Embarkation Lounge of Brittany Ferries at Millbay Docks.

As in past years, a mix of art and photographs are on show throughout the month of April.

The work on show has been created by schoolchildren from all over Plymouth with the public able to vote for their favourite by picking up a voting slip on-site.

Kevin Brown who oversees the Youth Activities for Plympton Rotary said: “This is one of our club’s favourite annual events when we can applaud the talents of our Plymouth pupils and allow a wider audience to appreciate their skills and creativity.

“The standard and quality of the work never ceases to amaze and shows that the creative arts are will now be held on a Tuesday evening at 8pm, in order that we may be able to meet up with the Army Reservists, after their drill session. The Branch Meeting will be held as usual at the Army Reserve Centre, Brest Road, Derriford, Plymouth and the dates for 2018 are: May 8, July 10, Sept 11 and Nov 13. The Annual General Meeting will be on Tuesday, January 8 2019 at 8pm. Please attend as many meetings as you can, the committee needs your support, if you wish to keep the branch alive.

Budding scientists get the lowdown on research

To celebrate British Science Week and to raise awareness of careers within STEM Industries, Year 9 students from Hele’s School in Plympton had the opportunity to take part in Plymouth Universirty Peninsula School of Medicine and Dentistry’s ‘Science Lab for School’s’ programme.

Local secondary schools took part in this hands-on event and had the chance to try some of the techniques used by scientists there for medical research. The students took part in three activities – extracting DNA from a banana, culturing cells in the laboratory and investigating the fruit fly model to understand human disease.

David Parkinson, Professor of Neuroscience, led the event and his team of Bio-Medical Scientists assisted Hele’s students with the activities. There was also the opportunity to talk to staff and students at Peninsula to learn about the research work they are doing into human diseases such as cancer and disorders of the nervous system.

Mrs Yeomans, careers support manager said “This was an excellent event and really gave the students an insight into the role of a Research Scientist.

“The staff from Peninsula were keen to share their career journeys with us and it was encouraging to speak to all of them, particularly with one of the scientists who came to Peninsula after gaining a Foundation Degree at a local College of Further Education and is currently working towards her PhD. Giving students the chance to experience the workplace is so important and can really inspire them to reach their future career goals.”

Experience The background image on my laptop is a painting

by William Holman Hunt called ‘The Light of the World’. This pioneer of the Pre-Raphaelite community of artists was renowned for his attention to detail in his paintings and ‘The Light of the World’ demonstrates this superbly.

In this painting Jesus Christ stands, with a lamp in his hand, at an old wooden door surrounded by a thicket. It illustrates God in Christ knocking at the door of the spiritual heart of mankind. Based on Revelation 3:20: ‘Behold, I stand at the door and knock; if any man hears My voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with Me.’ According to Hunt: “I painted the picture with what I thought, Chris Cole unworthy though I was, to be by Divine command, and not simply as a good subject. The door in the painting has no handle, and can therefore be opened only from the inside, representing the obstinately shut mind.” Hunt, 50 years after painting it, felt he had to explain the symbolism.

Chamber members get an update on Sherford After previously being postponed due to snow, Plympton Chamber of Commerce’s first Talking Tables - Sherford was held on March 21 at Elfordleigh followed by an excellent two course meal.

Brian Deacon of Linden Homes gave an interesting talk about the Sherford development and the plans for 2018, which includes the opening of the first primary school and work commencing on the Town Square and commercial and business premises.

hopefully over the next few years.

Steve Warren-Brown, a Plympton Chamber member - from YGS Landscapes - followed with the explanation of the planting trees etc which began three years ago.

The Sherford main entrance is made up of a Bund (wall) of plants which is a third of a mile long and 30feet at its highest. There are over 26,000 plants in the wall alone which took about 8 weeks to plant and should be a feature for many years to come.

Why we need knowledge and wisdom to face life’s ups and downs

BY CHRIS COLE, FOUNDER OF CROSS RHYTHMS, PLYMOUTH I have a responsibility as a human being and as a Christian for the choices and decisions I make.

Without the freedom of choice to open the door of my heart to the knocking of God’s call, I will never find the reality of the ongoing experience of faith, hope, love and a deepening relationship with God. As essential as all three components of the spiritual journey are, the greatest of these is love and love is more than a feeling it is a way of life.

It is this process of faith hope and love that takes us on a spiritual journey which can prove faith in the same way that rational thinking can prove scientific evidence.

Faith can be proven in an individual’s attitude and character and observed through the good and tough times of a believer’s life.

We need the balance of knowledge and wisdom to go through the ups and downs of life and wisdom is a foundation for life out of which come the deep issues of the meaning of life and the enduring values of our humanity.

How do we handle the tough stuff of life? How do we love those who disagree or take offence at us? The answer may be through

a genuine life of true faith. We can become increasingly secure in God’s love and relational intimacy so that we end up living before the audience of One. We become a servant of all, but no man can rule over us.

For many people within the Christian faith the Book of Proverbs 4: 23 -24 talks about the issues of life coming out of the heart. This is of course the spiritual heart of mankind.

Where the genesis of faith, hope, love, courage and meaning are birthed. ‘Watch over your heart with all diligence, for from it flow the springs of life. Put away from you a deceitful mouth and put devious speech far from you.’

What we think and say can tear down and destroy people and we need to be conscious of not judging others lest we ourselves are judged with the same motive.

We don’t know people’s stories or painful journey through life, which is why God says he puts the broken in families, which many church communities endeavour to become.

A wise person once said. “If you find a perfect church, don’t join it because you’ll ruin it.”

However, God says in Matthew 5: 43 ‘Be perfect as your Father in heaven is perfect.’ Quite a tension to hold, but one that can bring us to peace?

Sherford’s first primary school, Sherford Vale, is now one step closer to welcoming pupils, with construction of the main buildings continuing to progress quickly.

Marking an important milestone in the development of the Devon community, local dignitaries, members of the Sherford Consortium and the first Sherford Vale teachers met at the new town to celebrate the occasion.

Located at the heart of Sherford, and with construction starting in Autumn 2017, the first permanent school structures are in the process of being completed, including the main school building, first classrooms, as well as an outside play area. With the recent addition of a new roof, works will also soon focus on the school’s interior, with doors set to open to pupils from September 2018.

A total of 420 primary places will be available to children between the ages of 2-11 at Sherford Vale, with applications now open on the Devon County Council website. Representing a £6m plus investment into community infrastructure, the new school is being funded and constructed by the Sherford Consortium - the partnership of award-winning homebuilders, Bovis Homes, Linden Homes and Taylor Wimpey – with £1m also being pledged towards its creation by Devon County Council.

The new school will

be sponsored and run by the Westcountry Schools Trust (WeST), which has a proven track record in education excellence locally, also running neighbouring Ivybridge Community College.

The first Sherford Vale teaching staff member, Miss May, along with CEO of Westcountry Schools Trust (WeST), Rob Haring, joined local dignitaries and the Sherford Consortium onsite to celebrate the milestone.

Rob Haring said: “It is fantastic to have reached this landmark moment and to see Sherford Vale taking shape - taking us one step closer to welcoming the first pupils. Even though Sherford Vale is still under construction, we have been very busy behind the scenes, recruiting staff, planning and developing the school curriculum, as well as designing and launching the new school uniforms.

“Our vision is focused on academic excellence and success for all children, and over the past few months, we have been meeting with local families to discuss their hopes for Sherford Vale. It is exciting to be at the heart of a new community in one of the region’s most picturesque areas, and we want children to ask questions and find solutions, while making full use of the great outdoors, helping and inspiring them to grow into confident young people.”

Brian Deacon, sales and marketing director, Sherford Consortium said: “This is a major milestone for the development,

and we are very proud to have reached this stage. Sherford Vale is set to become the hub of the new community and is one of four planned schools set to open in the next decade at the new town, including a secondary school.

We are looking forward to completing Sherford Vale and opening its doors to the first pupils and their families in the very near future.”

Seeing the school coming out of the ground is just superb.

"Now, we are seeing a town emerge, whereas up until now it has been a collection of new houses. I can’t wait to celebrate the opening of the school in September and to see our vision for life at Sherford become a reality.”
