New plans are submitted for West Pier - and the cobbles are staying!

New plans have been submitted to ensure that the West Pier is looking its best in time for the Mayflower 400 commemorations.

Details are being outlined for how the historic pier will look cared for and tidy, ready for thousands of visitors in 2020 – with all of its cobbles in situ.

The plans will complement work which has already taken place to restore the famous Mayflower Steps.

The refurbished portico will be reinstated, existing seating and bins will be replaced, the pier walls and surface will be pressure washed, and vegetation removed. New flags will fly above the restored portico.

Access for people with disabilities and parents with prams will also be improved by providing dropped kerbs and a smoother route across the cobbles.

Council leader Tudor Evans said: “We’ve listened. We know people were worried about losing the cobbles and I will ensure that they remain.

“We have literally gone back to the drawing board. The structural work still needs to be done but given the complexity of the scheme, and the need to ensure that the pier is open to the public during the Mayflower Commemorations, we plan to do that work in 2021 after they have finished. “

West End Carnival brings family fun to city centre this summer The West End Carnival is returning to the city centre on Saturday August 31, as part of a joint celebration for the 60th Anniversary of Plymouth Market.

After the success of last year’s event, this year will be even bigger and better, with a packed programme of live music, street entertainment and family friendly activity.

As well as being a fantastic free day out for the whole family, it’s also an opportunity to explore the great range of independent shops in the West End, which will be running a variety of special offers throughout the day.

Steve Hughes, chief executive of the Plymouth City Centre Company who run the event, said: “We are delighted to team up with Plymouth Market to put on such an exciting free event.

“We have a day-long programme of live entertainment and we want people from far and wide to come and see what a great community we have here in the West End and some of the changes we have made to bring

Over the weekend of August 30 to September 1 it will host the Plymrales Three Beer Festival - its third CAMRA real ale festival with several guest beers and ciders to enjoy.

Activities over the weekend include: Friday 6pm to 10pm Free Brake Van rides; Saturday 11am to 10pm Free Brake Van Rides and an evening of music and entertainment; Sunday 11am to 6pm Train service between Marsh Mills and Plym Bridge.

There will be live music from bands including Joey The Lips and a Beatles tribute act on the main stage, hosted by Radio Plymouth. Visitors can also enjoy a huge range of street entertainment along Cornwall Street and outside Plymouth Market, including juggling unicyclists, fire breathers and performances from Street Factory and Plymouth Morris Dancers.

Two samba carnival parades will take place, and Mi Salsa Cubana will be encouraging everyone to get into the carnival spirit with dance sessions on the streets.

In addition to this, there’s carnival craft activities on offer for children, and cooking demos, classic cars and even a gin bar for the adults to enjoy.

As well as being a celebration of Plymouth’s vibrant West End, the day marks the 60th anniversary of Plymouth Market, which is the lynchpin of the city’s independent shopping quarter. The Grade II listed building was officially opened on September 7 1959 and has been home to a fascinating and eclectic mix of stalls and eateries ever since.

On the day, the market will be hosting cooking demos and tastings by Plymouth foodies’ favourite, Jacques Marchal and there will be a number of special offers on stalls throughout the market. Popular entertainer Billy Wiz Magician and face painters will be on hand to entertain children too.

Plymouth Market has also commissioned a specially designed canvas bag to celebrate

the event which is free to lucky customers, subject to availability.

Natural oasis hidden in the heart of Compton Compton councillors are working with the Collings Park Trust to improve the access to this fantastic wildlife area.

Retired Councillor David Fletcher was instrumental in joining forces with Andrew Leigh and Andy Stewart of Collings Park Trust to improve the access from Compton Knoll Close.

Following David’s retirement, his replacement Cllr Nick Kelly has been liaising with Plymouth City Council to fine tune the plans for a new access pathway.

He said: “We are keen to see this project become reality and have overcome a number of engineering challenges on this undulating site to finalise an acceptable plan.

“We want this oasis to be accessible to as many Compton residents as possible, especially the elderly and less mobile. Compton Conservative councillors have pooled their community budgets to fund this project”.

Collings Park Trust is a local community group and registered charity set up to develop a community garden on the site of the former lawn tennis courts in Collings Park, Compton.

The trust has been supported in their mission by the Woodland Trust who donated 420 saplings to form a wild fruit hedge, Plymouth City Council who match funded £5,000 to help purchase the freehold of the site and the People’s Postcode Lottery who assisted with the entrance to the community space.

Children’s centres in Plymouth have been awarded a Certificate of Commitment from Unicef UK, in recognition of the steps they are taking to improve care and increase the city’s breastfeeding rates.

Councillor Andrea Johnson said: “I really enjoy walking my dog Bella around the gardens and it’s lovely to see how the wide variety of plants and shrubs have established themselves supporting the local wildlife”.

The gardens have been carefully planned out and following countless hours of planting and pruning from the many local volunteers the results are very impressive.

Raised beds have been created for use by local school children and blueberries, blackberries, gooseberries plus an orchard consisting of apple, plum and other fruit trees provide nature’s larder.

The gardens provide a tranquil space to simply sit, relax and take some time to enjoy the local wildlife. If you live locally go and enjoy this hidden gem.

The children’s centres, run by Barnardo’s, Action for Children and Lark, have joined forces and changed the way they support Plymouth’s parents. The changes ensure that no matter which organisation runs the centre, where in the city it is, or who parents speak to they will receive the same level of support.

Centres now offer organised, systematic support for parents about infant feeding. All support and advice is based on best practice and evidence, ensuring there is no confusion about how best to support your baby in those important first days, months and years.

Councillor Jemima Laing, Cabinet Member for Children and Young People said: “Being a new parent is an exciting and precious time, but it can also be confusing and daunting. We want to make sure all parents get the same best-quality advice in Plymouth and this certification is an important confirmation that we are doing the right things in the city.”

Ruth Harrell, Director of Public Health at Plymouth City Council said: “Whatever their choice of feeding method, we want to ensure that all parents and babies are supported to form a strong, loving relationship: this is the best start for every baby. We do encourage breastfeeding as it protects babies against a wide range of serious illnesses in infancy, against cardiovascular disease, asthma and diabetes later in life and reduces the mother’s risk of some cancers. For those that can breastfeed it’s also easier, cheaper and less hassle than bottle feeding.”

The Baby Friendly Initiative, set up by Unicef and the World Health Organisation, is a global programme which provides a practical and effective way for health services to improve the care provided for all mothers and babies.

In the UK, the initiative works with health professionals to ensure that mothers and babies receive high-quality support to enable successful breastfeeding. The Certificate of Commitment recognises that a facility is dedicated to implementing recognised best practice standards.

Sue Ashmore, Baby Friendly Initiative Programme Director, said: “We are delighted that Plymouth Children’s Centres have received this award. Surveys show us that most mothers want to breastfeed but don’t always get the support they need. Parents attending Plymouth Children’s Centres have the satisfaction of knowing that their staff are aiming to provide the highest standard of care.”

Amyas delves into Peter’s archive to provide a further fascinating recollection of his vast collection of colour photographs taken during the age of steam.

John Gulliver is the speaker on October 7 with the second part of his presentation on The Barnstaple line: yesterday, today and the future. John concludes his analysis and commentary on the branch line from Exeter to Barnstaple with a reflection on its recent and current role in the transport of north Devon.

Lou Watkins and Mervyn Kendall are the speakers on October 21 with their presentation: Switzerland: a tale of two trips. a digital show of two halves. The first half will tell the tale of Lou and Mervyn’s trip in September 2017, travelling from West to East and back again. The second half will tell the tale of their trip in February 2018 to travel on the RhB Snowblower over the Bernina Pass.

Plymouth Seafood Festival Sept 14 and 15 Seafood lovers are in for a treat this September, as Plymouth Seafood Festival returns for its 8th year to the Barbican and Sutton Harbour. This free festival is a vibrant celebration of the incredible sustainably caught fresh fish and seafood on offer in Britain’s Ocean City and with plenty of fun and entertainment throughout the two days, there’s something for everyone. Visitors will be able to watch as some of the region’s top chefs create spectacular dishes in the cookery theatre.

They’ll be taking to the stage from 10am each day of the festival, cooking up delicious seafood dishes. There are also opportunities to watch demonstrations, from cracking crab to the traditional craftsmanship of Lobster ‘Withy’ pot making, using willow. Stalls will line Quay Square and The Parade, selling delicious fresh dishes to enjoy on the day, as well as some special treats to take away – you’ll find everything from street food and shellfish to cheeses, local gins and refreshing ciders. CATERed will also be hosting their hugely popular Kids Kitchen, so children can get hands-on with making some tasty dishes, all for free.

Art Weekender. Founded in 2015 by Visual Arts Plymouth CIC (VAP), after the British Art Show 7 in 2011 saw a growing appetite for ambitious artistic activity in the city.

This year’s Community Engagement Commission sees the Weekender partner with Nudge Community Builders, a community benefit society that owns, creates and runs activity in disused, underused or unusual urban spaces to lead to lasting positive change and community-led regeneration.

As part of a unique city set up, new contemporary art production agency, Flock South West is coordinating and managing the Weekender in 2019 and 2020. This year’s Art Weekender takes place between September 27 and 29 with opening celebrations taking place at Plymouth’s largest independent, artist-led contemporary art venue KARST on the Friday evening.

The work of the Millfields Trust, which is a social enterprise, is summed up in four words: Business where community profits. Its beating heart is the empowerment and improvement of quality of life for all in Stonehouse.

The Trust recently celebrated its 20th Anniversary, and guests including Board Members and tenants past and present, stakeholders and friends of the Trust were treated to an evening of fine food and great entertainment, at Stonehouse Barracks.

Roger Pipe, chief executive and Mandy Toze, business development manager have been with the Trust from day one and were presented with gifts from the Board to say thank you for their long service.

“We aim to make a difference in Stonehouse, supporting people and uplifting the neighbourhood itself,” said Roger. Over 20 years, they have certainly done that.

To generate income to sustain its work, the Trust offers high quality affordable business space for rental on flexible terms, in premises designed to support emerging, small and medium sized enterprises across all sectors.

Profits from rental income have enabled Millfields Trust to invest £1.6 million back into Stonehouse and to start and more importantly sustain other projects designed to benefit the local community.

Speaking of the Millfields Trust’s business activities, Rev Sam Philpott, Chair of the Board who has been with the Trust for 20 years, said: “When groups start up, their work often stops after two or three years, because people expect them to be self-sufficient and they stop the funding. So Millfields creates its own income.” That strategy has played a big part in its successful and steady growth.

Regeneration of buildings and community spaces; creation of business spaces so that new ventures and small enterprises can start up and thrive in a supported environment; inspiring children in the seven local primary schools to believe in themselves - these are just some of the successful, long term Millfields projects that have contributed to Stonehouse becoming a significantly different place to live and work over the last twenty years.

Since 1978 Sam has worked against a backdrop of low expectations within and outside the Stonehouse community. He, and others, have relentlessly encouraged residents and those in positions of power in the city to say ‘yes’ to the possibility of change, for the good.

“This was a hurting community that felt it was overlooked, ignored and left out,” said Sam. “They were told by some that things couldn’t change and they believed it. But I’ve found that there have always been people in the community and the city willing to change things,” said Sam. Over the last twenty years of Millfields Trust and more, Sam says that: “The community is now taken much more seriously by the council and businesses too. But the cornerstone is the residents, who believe this is a good place to live and it can be a better place to live. Millfields Trust helps them to engage and make this happen.

“People outside the area used to think it couldn’t change either but now they are seeing and acting

differently. There are some who champion what we do, like council leader Tudor Evans who believes in social enterprise and always encourages and aims to say yes to explore what we’re doing. There are Councillors from all parties like that.”

Sam is quick to give credit to Millfields CEO Roger Pipe: “He has gathered a brilliant team of exceptional people and helped them to gel, got their buy in and they all deliver.” It’s testimony to the quality of the team that some have been with the Trust for many years.

Millfields Trust is designed to have the Stonehouse community fully involved. The Board has a majority of eight local community directors, alongside a business director, two city councillors (appointed by the council), a tenant director and can co-opt three more (like Sam, who now lives outside Stonehouse after many years serving as vicar of St Peter’s church).

“Anybody in the Stonehouse community can become a member, and they can stand for election to the board if they want to make a positive contribution to its aims,” said Sam. “Those aims are to raise people’s sights, bring them together to see others getting on in life and say ‘I can do that’. We have to become a society that says ‘yes’ and explores ideas to make things better.”

Plymouth, like any other city, has its problems but it has its champions who are seeking to improve things.

Sam Philpott, Roger Pipe and the Millfields Trust team are one expression of that kind of positive work.

Over the coming months, the Plymouth Chronicle will feature the work of groups that are engaged particularly with issues of child poverty and encouraging young people especially to have hope that they can make better futures for themselves, their families and their community.

Millfields 20 years snapshot The first buildings rented to tenants in 2000 were at Mary Seacole Road and Creykes Court in the Millfields (the former RN hospital in Stonehouse). The Trust has added more properties including the purpose built Genesis building and HQ (formerly the Jaeger factory), both on Union street. They provide flexible co-working in shared offices to help new businesses make the move from home to office; up to 1,500 sq ft spaces, including office and light industrial depending on the location.

In 2008 The Widening Horizons programme was launched, supporting and enabling students from the seven Stonehouse primary schools to explore new and challenging learning experiences with visits to a number of different workplace venues.

In 2013 Millfields Inspired was established as a charity supported by the Millfields Trust. Its objectives are to work with young people and their families from the Stonehouse area, to provide a pathway from school to a future career. It seeks to create sustainable change by extending and developing the Widening Horizons programme.

In 2017 Grow Stonehouse was launched, a community gardening project, led by Millfields Inspired and funded by The People’s Health Trust. The project helps residents of Stonehouse to find ways to meet, socialise and spend time outdoors in shared green spaces.

In 2018 the Trust established innovative, viable textile manufacturing at Makers HQ. This Community Interest Company is a unique collaboration between Plymouth College of Art, Millfields Trust and the local Stonehouse community to reignite fashion and textiles manufacturing in the city.

It is fitting that it is located in the former Jaeger factory, which once employed 250 people.

The Zone needs your vote in bid for prize The Zone in Plymouth is on the shortlist to win a share of Persimmon Homes’ Building Futures £1 million pot supporting under-18s nationwide, but first they need online votes to win.

Persimmon Homes Southwest is backing The Zone to be a prize winner at a gala dinner in October, where cash awards of £100,000, £50,000 or £20,000 will be made to those winning the most online votes.

Lucy Green (Project Lead) representing The Zone, said: “It is a huge achievement to have been selected as a regional finalist, but now we really need people to get behind us and get voting, so that we are in the strongest possible position to earn one of the top three awards on the night, so that we will be in an even better position to help more young people into the future. The young people that we work with face multiple health inequalities. Up to 60% of young people aged 13-18 years that we work with will be at increased risk of smoking, increased risk of being obese, and at increased risk of poor sexual health.

“Many will be dealing with family and relationship breakdown and will have been exposed to domiciliary abuse. Many will have parents with drug or alcohol issues and will in turn themselves be at significant risk of poor mental health.

“The team of specialist volunteers that we intend to train, if we win one of the major awards, will be in a better position to deliver early interventions with young people in partnership with colleagues from the NHS, and in partnership with local schools and community settings. This is a real opportunity to make a lasting difference in young people’s lives. Next year is the Zone’s 30th anniversary, and hopefully with the support of Persimmon, we can make it a year to remember’’.

Persimmon Homes is an official partner of Team GB and the Persimmon Charitable Commission enlisted the help of medallists Kat Copeland and Callum Skinner to help determine the three regional finalists for each business division.

One initiative from each category will go on to win £100,000 each through a national award scheme to be decided by a public vote.

As well as the £100,000 first prize, there will be a £50,000 second prize and a £20,000 third prize in each sector, while a further 87 shortlisted projects will each receive £5,000.

Plymouth City Council has announced a series of ‘Sea in the Park’ dates and locations with its partner Blue Marine Foundation and delivery partner the Marine Biological Association (MBA).

Sea in the Park is an initiative to support Plymouth Britain’s Ocean City becoming the UK’s first National Marine Park. With the first wave of Sea in the Park dates announced today, the partnership will be visiting green spaces and play areas to help develop ocean connections in communities where that connection may have been lost or shrunk over generations.

Britain’s Ocean City has many opportunities in marine and maritime, and helping children see the natural wonders of Plymouth Sound is the first step to develop that connection and enhance civic pride across our community.

Tudor Evans, Leader of Plymouth City council said: “There are over 1000 species living in the waters off Plymouth Hoe. However we know that nationally 18 per cent of children have not been to the beach or coastal spaces. What’s even more shocking is 17 per cent of Plymouth children haven’t had the chance either to visit the beach or our fabulous coastline.

“We want to change that. This is a great opportunity to connect children with Plymouth Sound and build their excitement for our oceans.

“Thanks to Plymouth City Bus these Sea in the Park events are also a great opportunity to get children from some of our deprived communities to the coast and interacting with the inspirational Plymouth Sound.”

Plymouth City Bus have also partnered to help connect children from some of these inland communities with an additional series of Beach Ranger events the partnership is delivering across the waterfront (also included in table below).

Richard Stevens, managing director of Plymouth City Bus, said: “The National Marine Park is a great opportunity for us to develop sustainable communities and business whilst coexisting with nature.

“We are really proud to be helping with Sea in the Park by getting children to the Beach Ranger sessions around the waterfront. We hope this can be a first step for many young people to develop a love of our ocean that is such an integral part of our city.”

by Everyone Active on behalf of Plymouth City Council, has been awarded the status of ‘outstanding’

by Quest – Sport England’s leading national quality scheme.

Outstanding is the highest mark awarded through the scheme, and Plymouth Life Centre has now attained it during two consecutive Quest assessments.

Quest is the best-known improvement programme within the leisure industry and its rigorous assessments challenge even the very best leisure centres in the UK. The assessment looks at all aspects of a leisure centre’s performance, including customer services and the quality of its facilities. Members at Plymouth Life Centre were also asked to give their opinions and the site underwent a rigorous inspection before being given the final stamp of approval.

The final Quest report also noted the praise that was heaped on Plymouth Life Centre by British Diving, with the National Governing Body complimenting both the centre’s facilities and its ability to host high-quality aquatic events.

Julian Egan, Everyone Active’s contract manager, said: “We are delighted that Plymouth Life Centre has been classified as ‘outstanding’ once again. Our aim is to ensure the centre remans a hub for the

local community and a place where everyone can find fun and enjoyable ways of getting active.

Big boost for grassroots music in city

Grassroots music venues across Plymouth have joined forces to create a fortnight long festival of music called Fightback Plymouth.

There will be more than 100 shows at over 20 venues between September 13 and 28.

Fightback Plymouth has been coordinated by the Music Venue Trust in a joint initiative with Plymouth City Council to promote the city’s independent music scene.

Venues taking part include Plymouth Pavilions, B-Bar, Barbican Theatre, Annabel’s Cabaret and Discotheque, The Treasury, The Underground, Fortescue Arms, The Junction and UPSU Bar and Main Hall.

Fightback Plymouth is a new campaign that will encourage audiences to visit their local grassroots music venues and promote Plymouth’s emerging and existing musical talent.

There will be live music every day throughout the festival at a whole range of venues right across Plymouth. Many venue bars will be further participating in the Music Venue Trust’s fund-raising campaign by stocking Fightback Lager, a craft beer developed from within the grassroots music community. A donation from every pint and can sold gives financial support to the charity.

Fightback’s Gary Prosser said: “These venues are the backbone of the live music scene in Plymouth, providing spaces where artists can take their first steps, develop and grow.

Fightback Plymouth provides an opportunity to showcase the fantastic range of artists and venues that Plymouth enjoys, celebrate the history of our music scene and support its future.”

Plymouth’s Edmund Shillabear celebrated his 55th anniversary as a veterinary surgeon with a special event at The Duke of Cornwall Hotel.

In his welcome to over 100 guests, some of whom had trusted him with their pets back in the 70s when he first opened his one man practice, Harwell veterinary Centre in Peverell, Edmund explained his motivation and path to still successfully operating on local pets.

He talked about the debt he owed to so many people all along his career and the power of God’s influence in his life - right from the time of being called into the veterinary profession – which explains why he intends to continue following his vocation, not job, until God tells him to retire!

Edmund paid tribute to family, past mentors, his staff, friends and the power of prayer and the wonderful NHS for putting him back in working order after an horrendous road traffic accident.

He was described then on the front page of the local newspaper as ‘Miracle Man’ and Edmund truly believes it was just that, a miracle. Recovery would have been in vain but for the herculean efforts of his dedicated registered veterinary nurse Mary who somehow kept the Practice going for the 100 days of Edmund’s absence.

Five times Olympian and best friend Chris Maddocks spoke enthusiastically about Edmund’s achievements in racewalking competitions at home and around the world.

Chris extolled Edmund’s numerous marathons walked for charity, the current year’s beneficiary being the Cinnamon Trust.

Local volunteer Carol James spoke about the Trust’s work helping people and pets and a cheque for £555 was presented to the Trust on the night.

Entertainment included contributions from Silvington duo, Glyn’s disco, Plymouth Philharmonic Choir conductor Christopher Fletcher and member Jen Millward, and Street Pastor Paul Clace who talked about how Ed got hooked on Plymouth Argyle when he was a mere slip of a lad!

Lipson Co-operative Academy students celebrate superb results Staff, parents and students were once again filled with pride as sixth form students at Lipson Co-operative Academy were celebrating receiving some superb results.

Joseph Walsh achieved AAAA, securing his place at the University of Southampton to study Electronic Engineering. Anna Cardoso will embark on her Medicine degree after achieving a string of As and Bs. Whilst Hannah Smith’s results, ABB, has guaranteed her place at the University of Reading to study History.

Also confirming her place at her chosen destination was Sophia Grace, who achieved ABC and a Distinction in Media. Sophia will study Journalism at the University of Cardiff.

Rhiannon Witt achieved BBB and will spend the next year working as an artist and developing her art portfolio, before taking up her place at the prestigious Rose Bruford

College of Theatre and Performance in London.

Not to be outdone, students studying vocational qualifications also achieved some incredible results.

Rhiannon Finn achieved a triple Distinction* and will begin her career in the RAF, along with Louisa Morgan, D*D*D, who will study Business Management at the University of Plymouth.

Both Rinad Shayea and Theresa Brimacombe achieved triple Distinctions in their Business course and have secured their first choice University places.

Apprenticeships explained!

Most of us will have heard about apprenticeships, but all too often, they are overlooked for a more traditional educational route.

Apprenticeships can provide a golden opportunity: paid jobs with time set aside for study to gain industry knowledge and skills. Skills Group work in partnership with top local employers across a range of sectors including Business, Automotive, Construction, Teaching, Hairdressing, Child Care, Engineering and Health & Social Care. Our learners work with the employer throughout the week, earning a salary, with 20% of their time spent with us in our state-of-the-art facilities led by industry experts.

While children now need to stay in education until 18, they do not need to stay in school. Most 16 year olds dream of the day they can take their driving test and afford to buy their first car, by becoming an apprentice the dream becomes an achievable reality!

Heritage Open Contract to be awarded for second phase of Oceansgate Days at Ford Park Cemetery in September Oceansgate, the new home of marine enterprise in Plymouth and a key player in the city’s role as a maritime powerhouse, is taking another step forward with work on Phase 2 of the development starting shortly.

Ford Park Cemetery’s exhibition focusing on youth organisations in Plymouth, including Scouts, Guides and similar groups continues until September 15.

The exhibition is open to the public on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10.30am to 3.30pm and Saturdays and Sundays from 12.30pm to 3.30pm.

The Heritage Team at Ford Park will be hosting walks in conjunction with National Heritage Open Days on September 14 and 15. Walks around the cemetery will start from 2pm and last between 60 and 90 minutes.

Go along and find out more about one of Plymouth’s oldest cemeteries and the fascinating stories of some of it’s residents. The cafe will be open for refreshments and there is on site free parking.

Commander Charles Crichton will be giving a talk on September 18 entitled ‘Support to the Fleet at Plymouth,’ tracing the city’s maritime history from Edward First to the days when Devonport became one of the world’s greatest naval bases.

A must for anyone interested in Naval history.

The talk takes place in the Victorian Chapel, starting at 7pm.

Tickets priced at £3 can be obtained in advance from the Cemetery office( Plymouth 665442) or on the door.

The contract for the construction of Oceansgate’s second phase is set to be awarded to Kier, following a delegated decision being signed off today by Plymouth City Council.

Oceansgate has transformed disused MOD land in South Yard, Devonport, into a marine Enterprise Zone and thriving business development.

Council Leader Tudor Evans, said: “Oceansgate is a fantastic development, and one we’re really proud of. It’s bringing more jobs and more investment to Plymouth and cementing our status as a leading location for marine industry in the UK. “It’s a unique offering for businesses, with such close proximity to Princess Yachts, the Dockyard and Babcock, as well as to the in- and on-water testing opportunities offered out by Smart Sound Plymouth, a new proving ground for developing cutting edge technologies.”

Phase 2 will see the creation of a new three storey office building and a further 15 light industrial units, which has the potential to create an additional 130 jobs. The buildings have been designed to be flexible, allowing for a range of sizes of industrial and office

space, depending on businesses’ needs.

The development’s first phase was completed in April 2018 and is now a base for eight businesses, including the new Marine Business Technology Centre, as well as Lang & Potter Marine, international marine consultants MECAL and the Maritime and Coastguard Agency.

Like Phase 1, the plans for Phase 2 include the use of natural building materials such as

stone to ensure the development fits within its historic surroundings at South Yard.

The contract for constructing Phase 2 is worth £7.6 million. This second phase of Oceansgate has been funded by a £2.25 million grant from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and a council loan.

This year, individuals and organisations across Plymouth and beyond have rallied together to raise funds for the festival through an ambitious Crowdfunding effort.

An impressive £5,737 has been raised through Crowdfunder as match funding to support Visual Arts Plymouth’s successful Arts Council bid, exemplifying a strong artistic network in the South West.

Plymouth Art Weekender returns in September

Venues of all shapes and sizes across Britain’s Ocean City will play host to exhibitions, events and community based activities for the 2019 Plymouth Art Weekender.

Founded in 2015 by Visual Arts Plymouth CIC (VAP), after the British Art Show 7 in 2011 saw a growing appetite for ambitious artistic activity in the city.

The Plymouth Art Weekender started off as a grassroots experiment to bring together emerging and existing artists in a ‘fringe-like’ fashion.

The collaborative event has grown in magnitude and last year, the Weekender partnered with The Atlantic Project, a pilot for a biennial for Plymouth to bring a set of renowned international artists and a programme of commissions across the city on the same weekend.

This year’s Community Engagement Commission sees the Weekender partner with Nudge Community Builders, a community benefit society that owns, creates and runs activity in disused, underused or unusual urban spaces to lead to lasting positive change and community-led regeneration.

As part of a unique city set up, new contemporary art production agency, Flock South West is coordinating and managing the Weekender in 2019 and 2020.

This year’s Art Weekender takes place between September 27 and 29 with opening celebrations taking place at Plymouth’s largest independent, artist-led contemporary art venue KARST on the Friday evening.

Other happenings over the course of the weekend include group show ‘Notopia’, from emerging artists, d0gMilk, examining the experiences of being a Millennial/Gen Z in contemporary society.

European funding boost for Plymouth’s parks Parks and green spaces in Plymouth have had yet another funding boost.

The city has just secured just under €4 million thanks to a successful funding bid

by Plymouth City Council and its partners.

The money, which comes from the European Commission, will go towards the Green Minds project which will re-wild urban parks, gardens and verges, introduce a new system of working with partners and crucially, encourage more people from all walks to life, to enjoy the health benefits that our green spaces provide This funding announcement follows hoton-the-heels and compliments the Future Parks Accelerator; secured from the National Trust and the Heritage Lottery Fund earlier this year.

Councillor Sue Dann, Cabinet member for Street Scene and the Environment, said: “This is a really exciting time for our green spaces with so many national bodies keen to invest in making them the very best that they can be.

“This project will dovetail perfectly with our work on our Future Parks initiative and will in time lead to us running sustainable parks, nature reserves and woodland areas fit for several generations to come.

“I’m looking forward to working with all the partners and communities to see the benefits of this project.”

This funding has been bid for in conjunction with the University of Plymouth, the National Trust at Saltram House, Devon Wildlife Trust, RIO, The Data Place and Plymouth College of Art. The University, through its School of Art, Design and Architecture and School of Biological and Marine Sciences, will use scientific and digital tools to make nature in the city more visible and exciting.

Associate Professor Dr Katharine Willis said: “This is about imagining the future

of parks in Plymouth, and we will use innovative ways to reveal and value nature in the city.

“Our world-leading expertise, in fields from marine research to smart cities, will help the wider partnership achieve that.

“The Green Minds project is a truly city-wide collaboration that builds on our existing work on the Future Parks Accelerator project and the development of the first National Marine Park. It will put us nationally at the forefront of innovation when it comes to rethinking nature and how the public engage with it.”

Ed Whitelaw, from the Real Ideas Organisation, who will help the project by creating a 360° nature documentary film for the immersive dome at the forthcoming new Market Hall, said: “This is a great opportunity to bring together and showcase two of Plymouth’s finest assets, our natural environment and our creative digital industries.”

A key part of this project will look at ensuring that Plymouth has a wider range of natural plants and flower by changing the way they are managed.

Currently, the council keep most verges and green spaces tidy and manicured. In a lot of places, like parks or next to road junctions, this is entirely appropriate.

But in other places, this affects biodiversity and has a detrimental effect on the city’s overall green lung. Money from this scheme will go towards setting up a community-led forum to help properly manage and maintain these assets.

Another aim of the scheme is to introduce a city-wide culture change towards attitudes and behaviours to nature and the benefits it can bring to health and wellbeing. It will follow on from the successful Active Neighbourhoods Project in encouraging residents from some of Plymouth’s more urban areas to step outside and explore the place around.

The National Trust at Saltram House will help to add their expertise to create a community orchard, while Devon Wildlife Trust will establish a Ranger service to support public engagement with the project.

Finally, Plymouth College of Art students will benefit from using green spaces in Plymouth as real life case studies for their development of skills and practices. They will be working on permanent art installations, digital arts and urban design, all themed around ‘revealing urban nature’.

Get set to master the moors and make a difference for work of St Luke’s Hospice Cyclists of all ages are getting set for one of Devon’s boldest and most popular charity challenges this autumn, the Tour de Moor in aid of wellloved charity St Luke’s Hospice Plymouth.

The annual event – now in its tenth year – takes place on Sunday October 13, raising funds to help St Luke’s continue its specialist end of life care for terminally ill people, helping them to live well to the end.

Sponsored by Print Copy Scan, a local supplier of printers and copiers, the challenge in the rugged wilds of Dartmoor offers cyclists the opportunity of an adrenalin-packed adventure: the hill-filled 52km mixed terrain route of mud, sweat and gears.

Cycling at its fiercest for those aged 12 and above!

Alternatively, participants aged nine and above can take it down a gear and saddle up for 23km of tough riding over hills and through woods, and there’s also

the ‘mini moor’, a gentle 11km ride along the tarmac paths of Drake’s Trail that’s suitable for all the family.

As well as Tour de Moor providing for every level of cycling ability, the money it raises means the highly skilled St Luke’s team can give not just expert medical care but also emotional, practical and spiritual support to families at the most vulnerable of times, whether their loved one is being cared for at home, in hospital or at its specialist unit at Turnchapel.

Plymouth Seafood Festival will be returning to The Barbican and Sutton Harbour on September 14 and 15 for a vibrant celebration of the delicious locally and sustainably caught seafood on offer in the city.

Sarah Gibson, waterfront manager and chief executive of Plymouth Waterfront Partnership Business Improvement District, said: “Through the Waterfront BID, Waterfront businesses fund this annual Seafood Festival to attract visitors to the historic quayside to celebrate and cherish the heritage of the fishing industry. The Seafood Festival is part of the heart of Plymouth, Britain’s Ocean City and an event not to be missed.”

Fishing has been central to the history of Plymouth for over 500 years. Back in 1497, explorer John Cabbot returned from an expedition off the Grand Banks of Newfoundland, claiming that the fishing was so good you could almost walk on the cod.

Plymouth fishermen took a risk and travelled more than 2,000 miles by sail to find that the claims were true. Using fleets of fishing dinghies launched from schooners (a type of sailing ship), the fishermen used baited hand lines with as many as 1,600 hooks to catch huge hauls of

cod and haddock. Within a short time the schooners would make their perilous return journey back across the Atlantic to Plymouth.

Most of Plymouth’s early trade was through buying and selling fish and this continues to this day, with more than 6,000 tons landed every year through Plymouth Trawler Agents. The hustle and bustle of a busy fishing port is still very evident around Sutton Harbour but these days the catch is much more varied, with more than 350 boats landing over 80 different species between them last year.

Plymouth Trawler Agents regularly attract more than 60 buyers, all vying for the days catch - many of them now use their online auction system.

Auctions are normally complete before most people have had breakfast!

The future of fishing in Plymouth looks bright, with work on a sustainable fishing plan underway and the potential of benefiting from additional quota when the UK leaves the EU. Plymouth based Interfish, one of the largest fishing companies in the UK, provide jobs for hundreds of locals at their fish processing plant in Cattedown. The city recently played host to their flagship, the 76m super trawler Altaire. Having spent

Cooking up a storm with CATERed As an official partner of Plymouth’s foodie events, CATERed Limited bring some of the cooking activities that are happening in local schools to the families visiting different events throughout the year.

CATERed champions local seasonal produce from suppliers in the region and firms who commit to having bases in the local area. The pollock which is used twice on the 3-week school menu is landed in the South West in Plymouth and Newlyn by Interfish.

Try this simple recipe for fish cakes Want to try your hand at whipping up a simple fish dish? Here’s CATERed’s recipe for some fantastic fish cakes!

Homemade Fish Cakes - Makes 12

Ingredients Fish, pollock pieces 1.1lb/500g Hot smoked mackerel 4oz/125g Potatoes, cooked & mashed 8oz/225g Sweet potatoes, cooked & mashed 1lb/450g Lemon (zest) One Eggs One Finely chopped fresh parsley ½ tbsp Flour, plain 3oz/135g Golden breadcrumbs 2oz/57g Instructions 1. Steam the white potatoes, drain any excess water.

2. Half and bake the sweet potato, then scoop out inside.

3. Mix the 2 potatoes together 4. Steam the pollock, and mix with the cooked potato.

5. Remove skin from the mackerel and carefully flake into the potato and fish mixture.

6. Stir in lemon zest and parsley.

7. Taste mixture and adjust seasoning if required.

8. Divide the mixture into 12 fish cakes, using an ice

cream scoop. Shape into equal fish cake shapes.

9. Toss the cakes in the flour, egg wash, and coat in the breadcrumbs, place on a greased tin.

10. Lightly spray the fish cakes with rapeseed oil to obtain a crispy finish. (Do not over spray).

11. Bake on Gas Mark6/200°C for 20 minutes.

Prepared fish cakes can be made in the morning and put in the fridge until you are ready to cook them.

Biker Stu’s incredible £84,000 fundraising efforts Plymouth biker Stuart Morrissey (AKA ‘Madrider1961’ when he is online) has been raising money for charities since 2004, riding his Honda CG125 motorcycle all over the UK.

In total, £84,000 has been raised from rides on behalf of charities including the RNLI, the Poppy Appeal, Army Benevolent Fund, DEBRA and the latest, and perhaps his final, a tour of the castles of Cumbria for Macmillan Cancer Support.

During that time he has gone through two or three bikes, always relatively small 125s, and his oldest bike is now in the Moretonhampstead Motorcycle Museum. “We raised £55,000 on that bike, starting off with the round England ride for the RNLI in 2005,” said Stuart.

Stu began his charity work when he was going through a tough time himself. “I was working as a chef at the Holiday Inn, and my marriage was falling apart. My head chef said ‘You need to get something to focus on’ because I was so down. They did some regular charity work at the hotel for DEBRA, raising about £400 a year, and that first year we got it up to £1,500.”

Apart from a break in 2010/11 when spinal surgery prevented Stu from riding, he has completed charity rides every year. His ‘never say never’ approach meant that when Mike Grainger of GT Motorcycles told him not to take a recently fixed (but not 100% ready) bike on a ride, Stuart decided to go ahead and limit himself to 30-40mph.

It was a round trip to Bolton in Lancashire.

True to form, Stu completed the ride, albeit over a long time.

“I enjoy the ride,” says Stu, “and so do the bikers I ride with.” However, he suffers pain

from his back and hips, which is why he decided to make his latest challenge the last one.

For this July’s Macmillan trip to Cumbria, Stu was accompanied by ‘Rocket’ Ron Quin on his 650cc Kawasaki and Dan ‘the Man’ Whittaker riding a Suzuki 600 Bandit. “Riding safe is important,” says Stu, “so we had a

support team in the van, making six of us on the road for six days.”

The team set off from GT Motorcycles on Billacombe Road on July 1, taking A and B roads all the way to Cumbria, camping overnight at various stops. They toured the castles, ‘bagging’ 22 in total. “That included some medieval halls which are castles really.

Two of the official castles had jousting going on so we couldn’t get into them, one was on an island which we couldn’t get to, and one big one we couldn’t find at all somehow!”

They all returned safe and sound to GT Motorcycles on July 6, tired but happy.

“There was just one thing that made us a little sad,” said Stu, “we didn’t get as much publicity or fundraising for Macmillan as we wanted to. It’s no-one’s fault really, but we’d like to see the money go to at least £1,000.”

Thanks to amazing fundraisers like Stuart, the line is now open seven days a week, 8am till 8pm with the ambition of making it a 24/7 service.

“Thank you Stuart and the team for your support so that Macmillan can help people with cancer in Devon live life as fully as they can.”

Discovery College and volunteer are nominated for national youth awards Plymouth training provider ‘Discovery College’ and local 18-year-old volunteer, Emma Taylor, have joined other semifinalists in their respective categories for the national ‘Youth Matters’ awards, to be hosted by YMCA England and Wales this Autumn.

The prestigious awards recognise the achievements of young people as well as outstanding projects happening in over 710 communities across the country.

Emma has been nominated for ‘Best Young

Volunteer of the Year’ because of her tireless voluntary work at a soft play service and disability sports club at YMCA each week.

Discovery College - which is part of YMCA Plymouth - has been nominated in the ‘Best Training & Education Project’ category for their outstanding work in helping young people aged 16-19 through vocational training. The college has been recognised for its unique environment that engages students in their community and supports those who would typically struggle in other settings.

Play park makeover A Plymouth play park has had a complete overhaul thanks to a partnership with a community group.

Having joined forces with the Whitleigh Community Trust, the council have been able to replace all of the equipment in Milford Lane play area and make significant changes to the neighbouring play park in Norwich Avenue.

A new slide, cradle swing, seesaw and carousel have all been installed alongside seating to create a welcoming, safe area for local children.

The changes have been funded by a £19,000 donation from the Postcode Lottery, successfully bid for by the Trust.

The park was officially opened at an event with over 50 local children last week.

Councillor Pete Smith, Deputy Leader of Plymouth City Council, said: “It is so nice to see children of all ages enjoying the play park.

“Play improvements and encouraging children to go outside is so crucial for their health so I’m delighted to see the Milford Lane facility completed and ready for the summer holidays.”

Barry Meek, Chair of Trustees for the Whitleigh Community Trust, said: “Its lovely to see all these children and residents coming together to make their area a better place to live and play in” As well as the changes at Milford Lane, nearby Norwich Avenue has also seen some changes, with improved access to the play area for older children and a new path installed.

Norwich Avenue and Milford Lane will form the Milford Play Hub. The Trust will run a range of community activities and events including play days, bug hotel building and community picnics within the two parks while the Council will continue to maintain the equipment.

Councillor Smith added: “Thanks so much to our friends at the Whitleigh Community Trust for all their hard work. This is proof that partnership work in the community can really bring about positive change.”

Double delight for Sounds Musical

Dog walker attacked in Mutley Police are appealing for witnesses after a serious assault on a woman walking her dog in Plymouth.

The offence happened in the small park in Houndiscombe Road, Mutley, around 4.30pm on Tuesday 13 August. The victim was walking her Springer Spaniel when it was attacked by another dog, a Blue Staffordshire Bull Terrier type. She confronted the female owner of the Bull Terrier but was pushed to the ground by the woman.

The victim, in her 20s and from Plymouth, sustained a dislocated knee in the incident. The suspect then made threats before walking off.

Police are investigating the offence and asking for any witnesses to contact them. The female suspect is described as in her 40s, around 5ft 6ins tall, of medium build and with dark brown hair in a ponytail. She was wearing a grey woolly jumper.

Plymouth’s Sounds Musical Theatre Company have won two awards.

They were chosen by the National Operatic and Dramatic Association as award winners for Company Singing in Sister Act, as well as Outstanding Achievement in Sister Act and Sweeney Todd, two very different, challenging choices of production.

Chair Diane Bennallick, speaking on behalf of the company, musical director Marcus Alleyne and producer Amanda Paddison said: “We’re delighted to receive NODA’s valued recognition for the dedication and teamwork in successfully tackling such varied and challenging musical productions.

“Amateur musical drama companies are made up of people who have their own careers and professions, freely giving their time to bring entertainment to a wide audience, often unsung heroes when seen in competition with professional companies. These awards are a tribute to all our company’s talent and hard work on and off the stage.”

Not content to sit on their laurels Sounds Musical are now rehearsing for their new annual revue ‘Saints and Sinners.’

It’s important to just say ‘yes’ sometimes THE

Experience This piece is about how having a big enough ‘yes’ frees us up to take on challenges and voice our concerns at the same time.

But first, some background: At the time of writing, we’re enjoying the last few weeks of summer, the kids are still off school, the Ashes against the old adversaries are in full swing and the early mornings and evenings are still light enough to enjoy.

So, in keeping with the season we now have Christmas shopping on the various TV shopping channels, countdowns to Christmas are appearing in our Facebook timelines and society in general seems to have lost the plot when it comes to appropriate timing.

I used to get grumpy about the increasingly early Christmas mentions.

It was pointless, nobody listened and certainly no one stopped the madness. So, this year I decided to get on board and go one better, reading the story of the birth of

Jesus in the Gospel of Luke, in August.

Out of ‘season’ I read it from a fresh perspective; I suspended my ingrained expectations of what the Christmas story is about, and looked at how people responded.

In a nutshell, the angel Gabriel (not fluffy with wings and harp, but awesome enough to cause trembling fear in the people who saw him so that he had to tell them not to be afraid) tells both Zechariah (husband of childless Elizabeth) and Mary (not yet married to Joseph) that they’re going to have children.

Mary and Zechariah both say, in effect, ‘no way, how can that happen!’ and we can’t blame them. Mary was a virgin, which is a pretty big obstacle.

Ian Pilkington Zac and Liz (excuse me) are an old man and woman and have never been able to have children.

Archangel Gabriel, messenger of God (he’s a really big deal as far as angels go) rebukes Zechariah and renders him speechless until the birth of his son John; in contrast

he explains some more to Mary about the miracle that will take place in her womb.

Why treat them differently? Why so harsh with the old man?

The clue is in Mary’s later words: ‘I am the servant of the Lord, let it be to me as you have said.’ Getting back to my opening paragraph, she had already said a huge ‘yes’ to God, way before Gabriel showed up with his news.

“As His servant, I accept whatever He has for me” is how The Passion translation of the Bible puts it.

She’s already made a decision that she’s ‘in’, whatever happens.

Mary was a young woman whose heart was set on serving God; Zechariah was an old man, a priest who was ‘doing his job’ serving God. Maybe his heart wasn’t in it?

Certainly he wanted some proof to persuade him of what Gabriel said. It reads like he’s saying: “convince me and I’ll believe you,”

compared to Mary saying: “I’m already in, but how on earth are we going to do this?”

The best place to put that ‘yes’ is in the hands of perfect love, which the Bible tells us is God Himself, who understands our weaknesses and wants the best for us.

Cineworld to create more than 80 new jobs in city

Cineworld, one of the UK’s leading cinema chains, is on a major recruitment drive ahead of the opening of its new twelve screen cinema in Plymouth.

The cinema, located in Drake Circus, is set to open its doors in October 2019 and will create up to 82 jobs.

In a bid to fill roles and engage the community, Cineworld hosted an open day for prospective employees on August 10.

There are a variety of positions available including Cineworld team leader, team member roles, as well as Barista positions at Starbucks, which will form part of the new cinema.

All roles are on either a part or full-time basis. The recruitment day will also offer visitors the opportunity to find out more about careers at Cineworld, as well as ask company staff questions and apply directly.

The new cinema will feature twelve state-of-the-art screens showing the latest Hollywood releases, as well as pick ‘n’ mix and Baskin Robbins ice cream counters.

Popular Plymouth restaurateur and businessman Edmond Davari has received the top honour in the BAME Business Awards.

Law firm takes action against rare disorder

Action Duchenne, a national charity that researches into Duchenne muscular dystrophy, has received a cheque for £2,300 from the staff of Plymouth law firm, GA Solicitors.

Action Duchenne was named the firm’s charity of the year after being voted in by 74 employees.

Over the last 12 months, it has benefitted from a wide variety of fundraising efforts by the team such as dress down days, bake sales, quiz nights and sporting activities.

The charity supports research into Duchenne muscular dystrophy, a mutation in the dystrophin gene that over time causes muscles to weaken and waste away.

Since 2001, Action Duchenne has supported families affected by Duchenne, researched and improved life expectancy for patients and campaigned and educated the public on the disease.

The money raised by GA Solicitors’ team will be put towards developing effective treatments, building a community by uniting families, raising awareness and helping create a more inclusive society. GA Solicitors has a strong track record of supporting charities having last year fundraised £3,300 for local bereavement charity Little Things & Co. Wednesday walks are usually about 8 to 10 miles on Dartmoor or on the coast and are taken at a pace to suit the participants. Everyone Active to raise funds for cancer support

A local leisure operator is supporting a national charity to achieve its ambition of being ‘right there with everyone affected by cancer.’

Everyone Active has started a new twoyear partnership with Macmillan Cancer Support. It has pledged to raise £140,000 for the charity during this time, which would be enough to fund two Macmillan professionals for the whole year, enabling them to provide support to more than 500 patients.

The partnership officially launched in August and to mark the occasion, Everyone Active’s five leisure facilities in Plymouth swapped their traditional red, white and black brand colours in favour of Macmillan’s green to raise funds and awareness for the charity.

Colleagues at the Plymouth Life Centre, Brickfields Sports Centre, Plympton Swimming Pool, Tinside Lido and Mount Wise Swimming Pool, which are all managed on behalf of Plymouth City Council, donned green clothes, wigs and face paint in honour of Macmillan.

Players from Plymouth Argyle also visited the Life Centre to donate home game tickets and signed merchandise for customers to win as part of a charity competition.

Macmillan estimates that out of Plymouth’s 270,000 population, over 9,000 are people currently living with cancer, with an average of 968 people sadly dying from the disease every year. The charity currently funds eight

Ramblings of an old snapper!

Colin Rowe is, in his own words, an ‘old snapper’ and for the uninitiated that means he’s a former photographer, and a somewhat senior one!

He was also the BBC’s first full time cameraman in the South West, filming news and general interest stories all over Devon, Cornwall, the Channel Islands and the Isles of Scilly ... and working with some of the best known names in local telly, many of whom went on to work on the Beeb nationally: Hugh Scully, Angela Rippon, Fern Britton, David Lomax, Sue Lawley and many many more.

His incident-filled and colourful career is now featured in Colin’s autobiography called Ramblings of An Old Snapper, which has just been published by Plymouth-based Pen and Ink Publishing.

Born at the beginning of the 1930s, he spent the early part of the war in Plymouth with his parents, before being relocated to Scotland soon after the Blitz. Colin’s father worked in Devonport Dockyard and the move came when Mr Rowe senior was relocated to Dunstaffnage to work at the temporary dockyard base created there.

Dilemma

Returning after the war and completing his schooling at Plympton without ever sitting a single exam, Colin fancied following something of a family tradition by becoming a press photographer. A spell of National Service intervened, and his entry into the profession was anything but easy – the Unions then operated a sort of Catch 22 situation whereby you couldn’t join a trade union unless you had had pictures published, but you couldn’t get pictures published in the first place unless you were a member of a trade union.

It was a dilemma eventually solved by being in the right place at the right time and taking some shots of the stricken Scandinavian liner Venus, which had become stranded on the shore of Mount Batten Bay in 1955. The other photographers had all left the scene, when the RAF began a rescue operation and Colin was able capture images that almost every national newspaper was desperate to have, and for once they didn’t care if he was in a union or not!

Setting up his own photography business in the late fifties he soon developed an interest in film and managed to pick up some interesting jobs working for the BBC in Bristol. It was a contact there who tipped him off about the BBC’s intentions to set up a regional news programme in 1961. He applied to become a cameraman on what started out as South West at Six and which relatively soon afterwards morphed into Spotlight Southwest.

The world was changing rapidly, a decade earlier television had yet to reach the area, now it was beaming local stories into people’s homes and more often than not Colin was the man capturing those images: Chichester’s

successful circumnavigation; the Torrey Canyon disaster; the filming of the Beatles Magical Mystery Tour and much much more.

Filming from helicopters, small planes and massive RAF aircraft he covered the stories with a wide variety of BBC journalists.

Not everything went according to plan – after days of searching Colin and his BBC colleagues were the first to spot Chichester on the last leg of the journey. Pulling alongside in a small boat for an interview Peter Crampton tapped on the side of the solo yachtsman’s vessel, Gipsy Moth.

Alongside the fascinating work-based narrative, Colin finds space from time to time to update his domestic situation, which essentially is built around a long and happy marriage – he and Peggy celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary recently – his two happily married daughters, three granddaughters, one great grandson and a great number of friends.
