Children keeping fit and getting fed this summer in Plymouth

Fit and Fed, the great holiday activity and food programme, is running in Plymouth this summer holiday to support families with children who receive free school meals.

Organisations across the city are supporting the programme, giving children the chance to take up activities at Plymouth Albion RFC, Plymouth Raiders and the Life Centre, to name a few.

Councillor Pete Smith, Deputy Leader of Plymouth City Council, said: “Fit and Fed provides a safe and fun environment for children to experience a wide range of amazing activities including arts and crafts, sports and dance. Every child also receives a healthy nutritional meal or packed lunch each day.

“We are pleased to be able to provide the programme thanks to funding secured by the Council from the Department for Education. We were one of just 11 national projects awarded a grant to coordinate free holiday activities and healthy food for disadvantaged children this summer and the only successful bid in the South West.”

There are over 45 free clubs taking place across the city, however spaces have already started booking up. New exhibition at Ford Park to focus on city’s youth

Ford Park Cemetery’s new exhibition will focus on youth organisations in Plymouth, including Scouts, Guides and similar groups.

The exhibition will run from July 27 to September 15 and will be open to the public on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10.30am to 3.30pm and Saturdays and Sundays from 12.30pm to 3.30pm.

Instead of the usual walk in conjunction with the exhibition, the Heritage Team will be holding a ‘Young Persons Day’ on August 4 when they will invite young people into Ford Park to enjoy various activities, including circus skills, orienteering, puzzle trail, headstone rubbing and pebble painting. All the activities are free, although donations are always welcome.

The fun begins at 12.30pm and refreshments will be available from the Visitor Centre. Children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult.

A concert to raise funds for Ford Park Cemetery featuring Mad Dog McRae is taking place at the Railway Social Club in Pennycomequick on August 2 at 8pm. Tickets cost £10 and can be purchased in advance from the cemetery office on Plymouth 665442 (weekdays only) from 10am-3pm.

Girls just want to have fun – and they sure did!

Gathering together for the city’s most popular ladies’ night out, the Midnight Walk in aid of St Luke’s Hospice Plymouth, saw over 1,300 women pounding the pavements in support of the much-loved charity, raising funds for the specialist end of life care it provides for people at home, in hospital and at its specialist unit at Turnchapel.

Stepping back in time and getting into the groove for this year’s fun 80s theme, the ladies shimmied in shoulder-pads and lunged in Lycra and legwarmers, setting off from the city centre on a 13, eight or three-mile route. Having loads of fun with friends and making it a night to remember, many were there celebrating the lives of lost loved ones and cherishing precious memories as they made new ones.

Departing from the Piazza in the city centre, where their limbering up was led by Cheezifit and entertainment included Virina Flower (drag queen), the ladies followed a route that took in many Plymouth landmarks, including Smeaton’s Tower and the Barbican. And when the challenge got tough, moral support came in abundance from the spectators who cheered them on from their front gardens and the passing motorists who tooted their horns in solidarity.

Along the way, the ladies continued to wholeheartedly embrace the 80s theme, with hair crimping, themed make-up and selfie stops against the backdrop of an 80s’ teenager’s bedroom.

Among those taking part in the event, which was sponsored by Nash & Co Solicitors, was Louise Dinham from Whitleigh, whose father Dave was cared for by St Luke’s before sadly, he passed away.

Louise said: “Dad was one of those people everyone loved and he did so much for others, including being involved in the creation of the memorial garden at Derriford to help those who have suffered the loss of a baby.

“Taking part in Midnight Walk is my way of thanking St Luke’s for the amazing way they looked after Dad so he could be at home, where he wanted to be. It’s a charity that really needs our support so they can be there for other families, too.”

Alongside Louise was her friend, Emma Smithson from Plympton, who was also walking in memory of someone very special, her grandmother Grace.

Emma said: “I have such happy memories of nan – she was such a lovely person. In her 80s, she had lung cancer and the St Luke’s team was there, looking after her at home for the last months of her life.

“They were so caring that I want to do anything I can to help them. I know the difference they

make and how needed it is - they support families members as well as giving medical care to the person who’s ill.”

Also stepping out was Lynn Batten from Plymstock, showing her support for the charity currently caring for a good friend of hers at its specialist unit at Turnchapel.

“It felt really important to be doing this for my friend, who is only in her 40s, and to be doing something so worthwhile in support of those who are making her as comfortable as possible at this time.

“Another friend of mine was also looked after

by St Luke’s. He had a brain tumour and I know the fantastic care they gave made that very sad time a little easier to bear because they did everything so compassionately. It’s great to know the money we raise tonight will help such an important service continue.”

Also striding the streets was Jeanette Gerard from Tamerton Foliot, walking in memory of her parents, mum Jean, who passed away 25 years ago, and dad Bernard, who died in May this year.

“Tonight, I’m thinking of mum and dad, such special people. Dad was a real character, so full of energy. We were best friends and when he was ill I gave up work to look after him, going to the hospital every day.

“It’s thanks to St Luke’s that in his last few days he was able to be back home and I’m so grateful they made that possible. Tonight is all about celebrating mum and dad and doing what I can to support an amazing charity.”

By Jeanette’s side was relative Hannah Ford from Kings Tamerton, whose much-loved mum, Alison,

passed away the same month as Jeanette’s father.

Hannah said: “It’s great to be doing the walk with Jeanette and supporting each other because we both know from experience how St Luke’s goes above and beyond.

“Mum was a beautiful person, my best friend.

With St Luke’s looking after her at home, I had the comfort of knowing she was in very safe hands.

I can’t speak highly enough of the care that was given.”

Head of fundraising at St Luke’s, Penny Hannah, said: “What an atmosphere! A heartfelt thank you to all the ladies who came out to support St Luke’s - you are all incredible and we loved seeing you in your 80s gear!

“From the dedications on the backs of all the tee-shirts it was clear to see the positive impact St Luke’s has had on so many local families in need at a time of crisis.

“We are hoping this year’s event will raise in the region of £165 000, as it did last year, enough to provide a complete package of care at home for 165 families, not just in Plymouth, but in South Hams and Dartmoor, too. £60,000 has been raised to date, and I encourage anyone who has pledged sponsorship to send it in as soon as possible, so we can put it to work and help even more people in our community.”

Since Midnight Walk first began in 2007, the event has raised over £2m for St Luke’s, powered by a caring community who have walked a total of 233,677 miles for the charity they keep close to their heart.

Fun reading time at Drake Circus Central Park awarded a Green Flag

More than 270 Plymouth schoolchildren visited Drake Circus to take part in a series of interactive events designed to encourage reading for enjoyment outside of the classroom.

Children from The Cathedral School of St Mary, High Street Primary Academy and Laira Green Primary School enjoyed a range of fun literary-themed workshops, including storytelling sessions and bookmark-making with staff from Drake Circus and the store teams from Waterstones, Build-a-Bear and White Stuff.

Every child also went away with a book in hand and British Land, the owner of Drake Circus, provided each of the schools with £100 of vouchers to spend on brand-new books for their libraries.

The event was part of the Young Readers Programme – an award-winning initiative by the National Literacy Trust in partnership with British Land – that works to improve children’s literacy by motivating them to read for pleasure through a series of fun activities and gives them the chance to choose books to take home and keep.

KF Kitchens raising money for Macmillan Derinda Damarell of KF Kitchens at Faraday Mill decided to take on a challenge this year to help raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support.

Following the success of the coffee morning KF Kitchens hosted last year, Derinda wanted to do more for such a worthy cause, so she decided to take on one of the Marathon Hikes organised by Macmillan in eight fantastic locations around the country.

Derinda said: “I decided to do the hike from Weymouth to Wareham along the challenging but magnificent Jurassic Coast, a total of 26.6 miles in one day.

I was lucky enough to have my long-time friend Catherine Duckett take on this challenge with me.

“We completed the Hike in 12 hours and 40 minute and I never thought that it would have been as emotional and difficult as it was, through the rain, wind and finally sun we battled through every step to the finish line. We laughed, we cried, we encouraged

each other to keep going.

“The Macmillan team were amazing, it was all so well organised. A big thank you to all of the people who made the day so special from the people handing out sweets, to the man helping us to cross the roads safely. From all the people who kept us fed and watered, the support and encouragement at the pit stops, to the lady in the first aid tent at the 20 mile pit stop who sorted out my blisters and finally the lady who handed me my medal and asked if I was ok as the tears came.”

Derinda raised over £1200 smashing her original £250 target.

She thanked all the individuals and businesses for their support.

KF Kitchens will be holding another Macmillan coffee morning on September 28 along with the ‘Great KF Bake Off’ where bakers can enter their cake and have it judged with the best cake winning a prize.

Entry is £5 will all monies raised going to Macmillan Cancer Support.

Programme is a fantastic initiative and has really helped motivate the children to read more.

“A love of reading is something that can last a lifetime. It’s a great way for children to learn new things and fire their imagination, so anything that inspires them to open a book more often is amazing.”

Research from the National Literacy Trust shows that one in 11 children and young people in the UK don’t have a book of their own at home, yet those that read every day outside of school are four times more likely to read above the expected level for their age than children who don’t.”

Greg Lumley, centre director at Drake Circus, said: “We’ve been supporting the Young Readers Programme for a number of years now and it’s an event that we always look forward to getting involved in.

“Seeing children from our local community being excited and inspired by books is really rewarding and we hope it has a lasting impact.”

The Green Flag Award scheme is a national body that recognises and rewards well managed parks and green spaces. Devonport Park, Tothill Park, Ham Woods, West Hoe Park, The Hoe and Freedom Fields have previously been bestowed with the honour and have again retained the Green Flag status.

Councillor Sue Dann, Cabinet member for Street Scene and the Environment, said: “Central Park is Plymouth’s premier green space so it is fitting that it has Britain’s premier award. “Central Park has got a very exciting future. With a new café, sports hub and tennis courts nearing completion, Green Flag status is yet another string to the bow.

“I’d like to say a big thank you to all the volunteers, not just at Central Park, but at our other Green Flag green spaces, without whose commitment and hardwork this would not have been possible.”

International Green Flag Award scheme manager Paul Todd said: “It’s fantastic that we have more Green Flag Awards in the UK than ever before, joined this year by 131 International winners.”

“Each flag honours the thousands of staff and volunteers who work tirelessly to maintain the high standards demanded by the Green Flag Award. We congratulate each and every winner on their fantastic achievement.”

The Green Flag scheme recognises and rewards the best green spaces in the country. It is also seen as a way of encouraging others to achieve the same high environmental standards and creates a benchmark of excellence in green spaces.

To meet the Green Flag Award standard the judges are looking for green spaces to be healthy, welcoming places that are safe and secure, clean, well-maintained and sustainable. The management of the green space must involve the community, pay attention to conservation and heritage and include marketing of the site.

Central Park will be hosting the flagship event of the Plymouth Parks Matter campaign on Saturday July 27.

Celebrating the opening of the new Central Park Café, community hub and tennis courts, activities will include games, bouncy castle, music, dance, face painting and more. Try out Zumba, Pilates and yoga as well as tennis, football and more.

There are two main rings, Ring 1 and the Countryside Arena. The two rings will be packed full of entertaining things for all to see and enjoy throughout the day. Show starts at 9am.

Free Netball Sessions Aug 1 and Aug 8 Plymouth Life Centre from 7pm to 8.30pm. All sessions are free to females wanting to get back into netball.

Sessions will include a fun warm up, recap of rules and match play with the support of a qualified Netball coach. Summer of Fun Until Sep 7 The Plymouth Summer of Fun in the city centre, brought to you by Plymouth City Centre Company, promises to be a summer full of entertainment for all the family. British Fireworks Championships Aug 14 and 15 Tens of thousands of people will flock to The Hoe and other vantage points for two nights of spectacular firework displays. It was closed in April as a health and safety precaution following the discovery of asbestoscontaining materials (small pieces of cement).

Signs are up around the beach to show which areas are closed and what the asbestos-containing materials look like. Visitors to the beach are advised not to touch, pick up or tread on the asbestos-containing materials if they see them.

Dr Ruth Harrell, director of Public Health for Plymouth City Council said: “We are really glad to be able to open the majority of Mount Batten beach in time for the school summer holidays. “We appreciate it has been inconvenient for regular beach users but the health and safety of our residents is always our top priority and it was important to keep it closed while investigations were ongoing.

During the time it was closed our contractors removed more than 600kg of asbestos-containing materials. “Unfortunately we still have to keep part of the beach closed off. There is still one small area to the west of the steps down to Mount Batten beach where we are continuing to find more pieces and we will also be continuing to test the sand in the closed off area for fibres over the coming months and we look forward to reopening it fully.�

The land for Plymouth’s new crematorium has been secured.

The 17-acre site on the eastern edge of the city, off Merafield Road near the Stag Lodge entrance to Saltram Park, was purchased by Plymouth City Council in July.

The transfer of the site marks another major milestone in the £12 million scheme, which will see Plymouth’s aging crematoria replaced with a state-of-the-art, modern facility.

Councillor Sally Haydon, Cabinet member for Customer Focus and Community Safety, said: “This is a really important milestone in our journey to the new facility, so it is

exciting to be able to stand on the site and visualise how it will all look.

“It’s really important that we retain the peacefulness and beauty of this site and I think that the designs that we have complement it perfectly.”

The designs for the new crematorium have been developed with insights from the public and the funeral industry, received during consultation events held last year.

Produced by local architects Stride Treglown and Aecom, they show single-storey buildings nestled in green spaces with water pooled around the ceremony rooms.

Inside, light and open ceremony spaces with large windows are in keeping with the

desire to provide a modern quality facility.

Reflective spaces will be created for memorials and scatterings alongside landscaping that embraces the local environment and ecology. It is also hoped that a green burial option will be available at the new site.

The existing cemeteries at Efford and Weston Mill will continue to be active for burial and memorials with the chapels available for bookings.

A building contractor will now be procured to complete the build with work on the site set to begin later this year.

Plymouth’s lifejacket scheme goes national Plymouth’s trail blazing lifejacket scheme is to be rolled out across the country.

Fishing crews based in Plymouth were all offered free E250 lifejackets with personal locator beacons, thanks to an innovative project set up by Plymouth City Council.

Now the scheme will be rolled out in fishing ports up and down the country as part of the National Marine Safety Action Plan which is designed to help reduce loss of life and accidents within the local fishing industry.

Council Leader Tudor Evans said: “This is brilliant news. Britain’s Ocean City is leading the way in protecting those who risk their lives at sea.

“Fishing is massively important to Plymouth – it’s where 13 per cent of the national catch is landed – but we are all too aware that it is a dangerous industry and we wanted to see if there was more we could do to keep our people safe at sea.

“I could not be more proud of the work we have done here to make this happen. It’s been a real joint effort between the fishing community – the crews, their families have all been right behind us – they’re buzzing about it on Twitter.”

The project received funding from the European

Maritime and Fisheries Fund and the Maritime Management Organisation and was designed with input from fishermen’s representatives, SEAFISH and the emergency services.

It aimed to create a more coordinated community approach to training and equipment to reduce the number of fishermen’s lives lost at sea.

Since it launched the scheme in 2017, 250 life jackets have been distributed and 60 more are being allocated at the moment. The council has taken calls from Cornwall to Inverness and all ports in between asking for advice on how to set up the scheme.

Now as part of the Marine Safety Action Plan £250,000 will be set aside to extend the fishing lifejacket scheme, meaning an extra 500 lifejackets and personal locator beacons for boats across the UK. A further £700,000 has also been allocated to provide fishers lifesaving training.

The life-jackets have in-built locator beacons and were distributed by Saltash company, MarineCo. The project was designed with input from fishermen’s representatives and the emergency services to create a more coordinated community approach to training and equipment to reduce the number of fishermen’s lives lost at sea.

The scheme has cross-party support from councillors and MPs as well as the Inshore Fisheries Conservation Authorities, RNLI, Maritime Coastguard Agency and importantly, the fishermen and their families.

Dog fouling in city to be targeted by undercover patrols

Plain clothed environmental enforcement officers will be patrolling in Plymouth from Monday July 29.

Focusing on areas where residents have reported issues, officers will be on the lookout for those who do not pick up after their dogs.

Owners who are caught not doing the right thing will be handed a fixed penalty notice for £100, which if not paid, could end with a criminal conviction.

Councillor Sally Haydon, Cabinet member for Customer Focus and Community Safety, said: “I am absolutely fed up of seeing dog poo on our pavements and in our parks.

“I am constantly hearing from residents about how it’s a problem in their area and I’m pleased to be introducing a method to catch those responsible.

“When we took control of environmental enforcement, we said we’d act on intelligence and patrol in all areas of the city and that’s exactly what we’re doing.”

While the patrols will primarily be on the lookout for people who don’t pick up after their dogs, they will also be keeping a close eye on dog control, ensuring that dogs are kept on leads in the required areas.

Why plain clothes?

Everyone hates dog poo and the council receive a number of complaints each week about it on streets and in parks.

Often, when people decide they’re not going to pick up after their dogs, they tend to have a quick look around, check there’s not an enforcement officer around, and then walk on.

With plain clothes patrols, the council hope to add a substantial deterrent to these type of offenders.

Why does the council bother with dog control?

There are various areas, in various green spaces in the city, where there are rules on dog control.

Some places, like fenced children’s play areas, prohibit dogs completely. Others just require dogs to be on leads.

This is because even the most responsible dog owner can lose sight of their dog when they are off the lead and not notice if they poo.

All the places where dogs can’t go, or must be on leads, have clear signs but if in doubt, check the website at www.plymouth.gov.uk/ dogcontrol What about littering, fly-posting and flytipping?

Although dog fouling and dog control will be the priority of the plain clothed teams, they will not turn a blind eye when they spot littering, fly-posting or fly-tipping and will issue FPNs. If they’ve not got uniforms, how will people know that an officer is genuine?

Officers will carry Plymouth City Council identification and produce that at the start of any conversation with members of the public.

Where will they be patrolling?

The plain clothes patrols will be in areas where residents have told us that there are particular issues. But this is just the start.

New plastics code of conduct launched A new code of conduct to help businesses, community organisations and individuals cut down on single use plastics has been launched by partners in Plymouth.

The Plan for Plastics Code of Conduct was launched jointly by members of the Plymouth, Britain’s Ocean City Plastics Taskforce and Devon and Plymouth Chamber of Commerce at the Chamber’s City Conversations event.

It follows the news last month that Plymouth is the largest UK city to be awarded Plastic Free City status by Surfers Against Sewage.

eco-friendly by using recyclable materials including cups, plates and cutlery, and thinking about packaging when ordering supplies.

Councillor Sue Dann, Cabinet Member for Environment and Street Scene for Plymouth City Council, said: “We’re really pleased to launch the new Code of Conduct jointly with Devon and Plymouth Chamber of Commerce.

“As a city we’re committed to doing all we can to reduce single use plastics and tackling plastic pollution and to do this we need everyone’s support.

So the Code is really about making it as easy as possible for businesses, community organisations and individuals to take part. We can all do our bit for people, Plymouth and the planet.”

Stuart Elford, Devon and Plymouth Chamber’s Chief Executive, said: “Devon and Plymouth Chamber is delighted to support The Plan for Plastics Code of Conduct and launch the initiative to business leaders at our City Conversations event. Protecting our natural resources is important for everyone and businesses need to play their part. This code will help organisations to do their bit with handy hints and tips. The Chamber will encourage all our members to sign up to the code, which is even more important as Britain’s Ocean City approaches the Mayflower 400 year and bids to be the first National Marine Park.”

Our Plastic Free Business Pioneers have eliminated everything from coffee cups and straws to packaging. They’ve listened to us and to their clients who are increasingly asking about plastic-free options. It’s great for meeting environmental and CSR targets and, after the initial adjustments, can even prove cost effective. What’s not to like?”

Since the Plymouth, Britain’s Ocean City Plan for Plastics was launched in June 2018: • 264 schools, community groups, families and individuals have signed up to be Plastic Free Community Ambassadors and 102 local businesses have signed up to be Plastic Free Pioneers as part of the work led by Environment Plymouth.

• 100 campaigners have taken part in awareness raising ‘plastic surgery’ workshops • 800 volunteers took part in 160 litter picks with local community group Clean Our Patch, and collected 4,000 bags of litter.

• 748 volunteers have taken part in beach cleans with Plymouth Beach Clean Volunteers and collected 261 bags of rubbish and 5,000 ‘nurdles’ (small plastic pellets used in a number of products) • CATERed who provide school meals for 67 of Plymouth’s secondary schools have removed 8,000 plastic straws, removed disposable plastic packaging and moved over to biodegradable • A Sea Bin has been installed by Plymouth City Council at Queen Anne’s Battery as part of a pilot project to monitor plastic pollution with the University of Plymouth

Plymouth photographers snap up top award The award for the Best Photography Unit in the Royal Navy has been awarded to a group of photographers from Plymouth.

The Fleet Regional Photographic Unit West, based at Devonport Naval Base won the coveted Peregrine Trophy, which is the highest honour that any Photographic Section can achieve and is awarded annually.

Judged by some of the best photographers and agency professionals in the country, the overall winner for the best portfolio went to the Plymouth based Unit for their work over the past 12 months.

Two of the main contributors to this outstanding selection were Leading Photographers Alex Ceolin and Barry ‘Baz’ Wheeler.

“It’s a very proud moment,” said Chief Petty Officer Matt Ellison, who heads up the Royal Navy Photographers in the region. “Alex and Barry have done really well and its due recognition for all their hard work this year.”

Alex Ceolin joined the unit after finishing her Photography training at RAF Cosford in the West Midlands in April 2018. She became a Navy photographer after leaving her role as a communications specialist to

fulfil her dreams and has never looked back.

Barry Wheeler transferred from the Royal Marines and after his training he served around the world and covered most of it with a camera by his side. His Commando training has seen him out and about with the Royal Marines, whether at sea or on land poised to take that image!

“It’s been a long time since our section has won the Peregrine Trophy and I’m so happy to have contributed to our section’s success,” said Barry.

The Peregrine Trophy is awarded to the best Photography section that submits a portfolio of six images, covering military based subjects and can cover operations anywhere worldwide in any environment.

The awards ceremony for the Peregrine Trophy is a prestigious occasion and took place in July at Admiralty House on London’s Whitehall.

During the ceremony other awards were presented for Best Maritime image, Best Student of the year, Best Amateur among many others.

But it’s the Peregrine Trophy that everyone wants to win, which was presented by Chief of Joint Operations (CJO), Vice Admiral Ben Key CBE at the end of the night.

Plymouth to work with Music Venue Trust to develop live music in city Plymouth City Council is working with the Music Venue Trust, a national grassroots music charity, to support and develop live music in Plymouth.

Following consultation with venues, promoters and musicians involved in the local music industry, the council has teamed up with the Music Venue Trust to discuss and identify the problems faced in Plymouth and how to tackle them to support a thriving local music scene.

The Music Venue Trust will be engaging with music venues across the city to understand the local music scene and identify steps to support the industry. This will be followed by a two week celebration event in September, Fightback Plymouth, which will celebrate the local artists and venues that exist in the city.

Volunteers pick litter to raise cash A team from Devon Universities Royal Naval unit, led by Ryan Cumner, has been helping to clean the streets of Plymouth.

The team is aiming to fundraise £2000 before the end of August for SeafarersUK; a charity that supports the UK’s maritime industry.

The charity provides safety equipment for merchant seamen and the fishing fleets, as well as grants to help seafaring families in need. As part of the fundraising the team took to the streets in Millbay to clean one of the most polluted areas in Plymouth.

With the backing of Clean Our Patch, a community group dedicated to cleaning up Plymouth, led by El and Ash, along with two other volunteers, they collected 24 bags of rubbish in two hours.

The items collected ranged from the ordinary – like takeaway boxes – to the bizarre like three chest freezers and a sofa. Those obviously did not fit in the bin bags, but were reported to the council!

Verity Thomas, the head of fundraising in the team, said: “Doing the litter pick was very eye-opening and insightful. It highlighted the extend of drug use in Plymouth, as well as the issue of commercial fly-tipping, one-useplastics, and general littering.

“I hadn’t realised it was such a problem beforehand and I learnt a lot”.

during the pick: a crisp packet dated to 2004, so 15 years old.

Collecting large pieces of rubbish was easy using the litter grabbers but Adam Bennett was determined to pick up the smaller items too, like the numerous cigarette butts.

Sailor campaigns for dog walkers in Plymouth to help clean up rubbish A passionate sailor from the Royal Navy based in Devonport, is leading a campaign to encourage dog walkers to help clean up some of Plymouth’s footpaths.

Leading photographer Barry ‘Baz’ Wheeler, 37,of the Fleet Photographic Unit West along with his wife Cathy and their dog Izzy are spearheading an initiative, asking other dog owners to pick up litter on their daily walks.

“I’ve noticed over the past three or four years that many of the paths where I go for a walk with Izzy, my dog, are littered with rubbish and plastic,” said Baz. “Many of the hedgerows and bushes are covered with domestic and take-away waste, which is a general blight on the landscape. So, I was thinking if everyone could just pick up a bag full of litter every time they went out, we could all help get rid of this problem.”

Baz was so passionate after one particular walk, that he decided to clear up a section of the woodlands he had just walked through. He and Cathy gathered four bin bags full and cleared an area 10 metres either side of the pathway.

“There are hundreds of dog walkers and pathways in Plymouth alone, if it was repeated across the country by thousands we can get on top of the problem and the paths and parks would improve, be cleaner and a whole lot more pleasant to walk through.”

Inspired by a recent photo assignment to an East Cornwall beach, where he was taking pictures of HMS Richmond’s ship’s company clearing up an area, as part of a national Beach Clean campaign, he knew from then he had to do something that would make a difference.

“They cleaned the whole beach, filling many, many bags of rubbish with the plastic they could see, which was then taken away by the local council, it was very inspirational. It was just one beach but their efforts made a great difference to that corner of Cornwall.”

walking trails. People have really come together to act and make their surroundings better, thanks to Baz’s social media posts. He regularly posts pictures of what he finds on his, Cathy and Izzy’s walks.

“It’s really taken off now, I’m amazed how everyone has taken to showing what they are

doing to help the environment. Picking up the plastic waste and rubbish in their parts of the country, we feel like we are really achieving things for the environment.”

Cathy and Baz are also hoping that the actions of their supporters on social media are setting a trend for others to follow. They believe through the efforts and the improved surroundings, it will also discourage people from dropping litter and keep parks and paths clear.

“I’m hoping we are influencing the next generation as well. Getting young people to appreciate their surroundings as well as the disposal of rubbish properly by taking it away or putting it in bins provided by the councils in their areas.”

...big plans to win hearts and minds of Plymouth

The team behind Plymouth’s Box project have been outlining plans to inspire and involve the city’s residents in history and culture – far beyond the walls of the Box.

Members of one of the Council’s key scrutiny committees toured the construction site on North Hill to get a progress report on the hugely ambitious project which is due to open next year.

As well as touring the site – which has come on in leaps and bounds – they were given detail of plans for how families, schools, young people and communities will form a core part of The Box’s audience.

A fantastic families’ programme is being developed with gallery trails, workshops, parent and toddler sessions, all aimed at making sure the Box is the go-to destination for families.

The schools programme is being drawn up with support from teacher ambassadors at 30 Plymouth schools and sessions are being structured around Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths – in keeping with the Plymouth’s STEM strategy – as well as art, history and geography. Online resources are part of the package and 22 loan boxes covering topics from mummification to African instruments will be available.

The community learning programme will build on the phenomenal – and often moving work – that has been going on in Plymouth’s neighbourhoods. Residents in care homes, for example, have been getting their teeth into the

‘Your recipes, Your heritage’ project, reminiscing about Spam and rationing and who could forget the inspiring ‘Blast from the Pasties’ event at the Moments café in the city centre, where pasty power got people talking, tasting and crimping their pasties to perfection. The project aims to tackle social isolation and bring people together to share meals and stories.

Councillor Leader Tudor Evans said: “It’s so important that everyone in this city feels the

Box is something for them. That’s why so much effort is being put into making sure people feel connected and part of this.

“There are so many examples: awesome projects drawing out people’s memories so that they can tell us their part in Plymouth’s history.

NORMAN LEAVES HIS ENTIRE £300,000 ESTATE TO THE BOX A Plymouth man who sadly passed away last year has left his entire estate worth nearly £300,000 to The Box.

Norman Hine’s generous legacy, which included cash, investments and a bungalow, came as a complete surprise to the staff who are working on the development of the city’s brand new cultural and heritage centre.

Many of them knew Norman who was a regular visitor to the Museum and Art Gallery, Plymouth and

West Devon Record Office and South West Film and Television Archive for many years.

Stacey Anderson, achivist at The Box said: “Norman was a true gentleman and I learnt a lot about the city from my conversations with him. He had a wealth of knowledge about local and naval history.

“Collecting photographs linked to Plymouth’s time as an ocean liner port of call was a personal mission for him. I particularly remember one of them

which was a great image of Walt Disney stepping off the Normandie in 1935.”

In later life Norman used his knowledge to help Plymouth City Council develop the ‘Wall of Stars’ on Millbay Road as part of the city’s ‘Waterfront Walkway’ public art trail.

He also gave talks at the Museum and Art Gallery about the famous film stars who had disembarked here and supported the development of its ‘Millbay 150’ exhibition in 2007.

The massive ‘Box On Tour’ programme has been going on for almost three years engaging communities across the city and beyond. So far it has engaged with 114,500 individuals alone during 2017/18 and has reached a similar figure for 2018/19. Some key highlights includes working with 64 volunteers who have provided a total of 694.7 days; an award for ‘Best Community Engagement’ and ‘Best Overall Archive’ by the National Community Archives and Heritage Group for Maker Memories – the project about Maker Camp in South East Cornwall.

The visitors were also given an update on construction. The exterior refurbishment of the old museum building is complete as well as the striking cantilevered section which will house the city’s archives and collections – all one million objects. Many of the permanent galleries that will showcase the city’s amazing art, natural history, human history, media, photographic and archive collections are nearly ready for fit out.

Behind the scenes staff are preparing to move objects, images, archival materials and works of art that will move on to the site during the autumn/winter.

The committee members heard about the challenges of the Reload, the project to move over a million items from nine different locations around the city into the Box. It’s not just a case of packing and unpacking artefacts. Systems, including IT, that support these collections have to be dismantled. Every object has to be tracked and accounted for – a systematic move that is being planned like a military operation.

A comprehensive plan for opening has been drawn up to bring visitors flocking to the Box, as well as ensuring all aspects of the venue’s operation, from catering to security, are good to go.

Teresa’s world record headshave challenge Young people wanted for new creative project Plymouth’s Playwriter’s Organisation is launching a new project for creative youngsters aged between 16 and 20.

16-20 will start in September and run for 400 days until November 2020.

Organised and run by the Playwriters Organisation the project is free, and is open to all young people aged between 16 and 20 plus who are interested in any or all of the following: creative writing, playwriting, theatrical production, performance and story-telling, film and screen-work. No qualifications are necessary.

The committment is just to do the work on-line and then have it appraised in tutorials weekly. These will be held on Friday mornings or Sunday afternoons, so the project is suitable for all whether working, not working, or in full-time education.

During the lifetime of the project the participants will create various pieces of work which will then be published or performed.

Mike Ford of the Playwriters Organisation said: “The creative skills and teamwork abilities acquired by the students, as well as the social skills, will be transferable into any workplace or further study they wish to do afterwards.”

The Playwriters are collaborating with Roughwood Associates and film-maker Ryan John on the project, and will publish an anthology of the students’ work, staging a production and making a film, all in 2020.

A Plymouth mum is organising a record-breaking headshave to raise money for a charity which gave her son the trip of a lifetime.

Teresa Brookshaw, who lives in Stoke, is appealing for volunteers to help beat the Guinness World Record for the most people having their head shaved at the same time.

She wants to raise money for the Starlight Children’s Foundation which grants the wishes of a lifetime for children with serious illnesses.

Teresa’s 16-year-old son Adam has an extremely rare disorder called Methylmalonic Acidemia (MMA) which sadly took the life of his sister Sophie in 2007 when she was just five years old.

MMA is an inherited disorder in which the body is unable to process certain proteins and fats (lipids) properly. The effects of MMA, which usually appear in early infancy, vary from mild to life-threatening.

There are thought to be less than 20 cases in the UK. Earlier this year, Starlight granted Adam’s wish to watch a WWE Wrestlemania Show in America, paying for him, his mum and elder brother to visit the USA and attend the event in Monterey.

“Starlight is a fantastic cause,” said Teresa,”and it really was the trip of a lifetime for the three of us.”

She is organising the Guinness World Record attempt at Plymouth Guildhall on September 8 and is appealing for people to step forward and join the challenge.

The current record is 329 and although Teresa has already signed up a good number of volunteers she still needs literally hundreds more. And she is also appealing for people who will do the shaving.

Vital help for people with long term health conditions

Improving Lives Plymouth delivers a free, four week course called ‘My Health, My Way’ which helps people develop knowledge, skills and confidence to selfmanage the challenges of living with a long term condition (LTC).

The course is delivered as part of the Longterm Conditions Self Management service at Improving Lives.

Nichola Royal lives with the chronic pain of fibromyalgia (also known as central sensitisation disorder) and she was a delegate on one of the courses held earlier

this year at Improving Lives Plymouth’s Mannamead Wellbeing Hub. Nichola’s job as a biomedical scientist with the NHS became too much for her shortly after the birth of her baby. Chronic fatigue, pain and sensory overload were eventually diagnosed as fibromyalgia after she used her scientific skills to narrow down the options and ask her GP to confirm.

She found it hard to explain to her family, and was getting defeated by her inability to do the things she used to do until she was referred to the Long Term Conditions Self Management team. She joined nine others with a wide range of LTCs and received support from trained volunteers, most of whom live with long term conditions themselves and so have empathy for course delegates.

“It was a relief to be able to talk about my condition with others who had similar experiences,” she said. “It’s a safe place to find tools to manage life.”

People attending the courses (soon to be held in a wider selection of community

venues) can include carers as well as those with an LTC. During weekly, 3½ hour workshops, people gain skills to manage their condition; they set achievable goals, meet others and talk about their experiences.

For someone who is isolated and whose family can often become frustrated with them, the adaptable course can be life changing; it helps them to explain their difficulties to others in a way they can understand.

“The course helps you find ways to explain how you’re feeling to those who love you but often don’t get it,” said Nichola. “It gives you some hope that you are normal, just a different normal.

“I learned to set achievable goals for myself,” she said, “and to accept ‘that’s OK for me’; it helps you become more positive and kind to yourself.”

Long term conditions self management coordinator, Lorraine Grave said that they are looking to expand into more venues, so they need more volunteers. “Ideally volunteers will have their own experience of living with a long term condition; full training is given and we expect them to facilitate two, four week courses a year. The courses are very informal and rewarding - they really take the pressure off the delegates and help them find a better quality of life.”

These new businesses have opened in recent weeks on Mutley Plain

When did you last take a stroll along Mutley Plain? Chances are you’ve spotted some changes.

Compton Councillors Andrea Johnson and Nick Kelly are on a mission to reverse the decline on the high street and make Mutley Plain a thriving district shopping centre once again.

Signs of Mutley’s rejuvenation are clear with more than half a dozen new businesses taking up occupancy along Mutley Plain in recent months.

Cllr Kelly said: “It’s fantastic to see premises that have been boarded up for years coming back to life with new and independent traders investing in Mutley Plain.”

The new businesses range from barbers to a yoga and pilates studio, a brunch café, children’s play café, a furniture outlet, a bigger Dominos pizza branch, health

therapies, nail salons and Mutley Baptist Church is due to open its own ‘Green Space’ arts shop in July. The Plain is a bustling service centre and there really is something for everyone.

Cllr Mrs Johnson said: “The Mutley Steering Group have worked extremely hard to facilitate new businesses setting up in the area and we are starting to see the positive results of our efforts.”

Both councillors know there is still much to do to realise their aspirations of Mutley Plain returning to full occupancy and the vibrancy it had many years ago.

Cllr Kelly said: “We are working quietly behind the scenes to improve the public realm, offer much-improved parking arrangements and keep the Plain clean and tidy.

“We are strongly advocating more and longer free parking for shoppers to enable them to really explore the wide diversity of

shops and professional services that are available.

“We would like to see more flowers, trees and shrubs planted to improve the air quality and make the area more visually attractive.

We’re also working on removing some of the clunky railings to open the space up a little more.

Further positive news is that the unsightly toilet block will soon be removed and the local Police have been extremely pro-active in moving beggars along from the shop fronts.

Both Councillors would welcome shoppers’ thoughts on how they would like to see Mutley Plain transformed in the future.

£75 million commitment to city by top law firm Plymouth City Council has secured transatlantic law firm Womble Bond Dickinson as key tenants for its headquarters at Millbay.

The company has signed a new lease committing to Ballard House – and to the city and region – until at least 2035.

Council leader Tudor Evans said: “What a great day. This is a company that not only works in Plymouth but works for Plymouth and whose staff are a big part of life here.

The council occupies four floors of the seven story office block since moving out of the Civic Centre in 2014.

Ballard House is now a base for over 700 council staff, but advances in technology means that more and more staff are being encouraged to work flexibly – both at home and in other council buildings – to keep the costs of office space down. Most of the staff are now hot-desking.

It means the council also retains control of a key strategic site right on the waterfront at Millbay, an area currently undergoing significant regeneration.

Plymouth’s rail commuters are getting the big picture of the city’s exciting plans to create a better welcome for rail passengers.

A masterplan gives a bird’s eye view of what buildings could be going up, what’s coming down and how this vital entrance to Plymouth could look in the future.

Key partners in the city are working together to create a whole new feel to this important gateway for people arriving into the city by rail – from Cornwall as well as Devon and beyond.

The University of Plymouth recently showcased by way of a public consultation, its exciting ambition to transform the tower above the station into Intercity Place. This will house inter-professional clinical skills and nursing/midwifery facilities as well as additional educational services to support the future health workforce. Subject to planning permission being granted, it will signal the first major work to rejuvenate the station and its surrounds as the anchor investor.

Now commuters can see more detail of what’s in store as the regeneration scheme moves off architects’ drawing boards and into the planning system.

Council leader Tudor Evans said: “This is a massive regeneration scheme involving key organisations in Plymouth all committed to creating a real sense of arrival – a wow – when people come here by train.

“It’s a hugely complicated scheme with lots of different elements. The university’s vision for the tower means we have an anchor tenant but we now want to know the initial thoughts of those who use the station the most.”

The masterplan would become the guiding document for decisions being taken around this location. Plans currently include demolishing the redundant rail incident safety centre (RISC building) on the east side of the station to enable a new multi-storey car park to be built.

The existing car park opposite the entrance is also earmarked for demolition and a new hotel and second university building created in its place.

doubling the capacity to 469 spaces, for the site of the RISC building.

Station staff accommodation will be modernised and significant new public space created including a direct pedestrian link to North Cross and the city centre.

University of Plymouth Vice-Chancellor Professor Judith Petts CBE said; “This forms an important part of the University’s ambitious estate plans which will transform the campus and reimagine university teaching and research spaces for the 21st century. The station scheme is an important part of these plans and will significantly improve this notable city landmark so that it becomes an exciting gateway into Plymouth.

“As a new home for allied health professions and nursing/midwifery, this builds on our already strong health credentials by making a significant investment in educating tomorrow’s health professionals for the region and beyond.”

GWR Plymouth station manager Sara Rogers said: “There are almost 2.5 million passenger journeys through Plymouth every year, and it is easy to see why the station is regarded as the gateway to the South West. New Intercity Express Trains, providing almost 25 per cent more seats on every train than the ones they have replaced are already in service, and from December this year we will see more frequent and faster journeys. In keeping with improved services, I am delighted rail users will now have the opportunity to see these upgrade plans and the next phase in the station’s development.”

The entire scheme is expected to cost in the region of £80m and has already received some financial support. Through the One Public Estate, the Cabinet Office has provided £500,000 for feasibility and planning work.

The multi-million regeneration scheme proposed for the area around the station will be named after Isambard Kingdom Brunelt, he great engineer, who was not only the chief engineer for the Great Western Railway, but also built the iconic Albert Bridge over the Tamar and Plymouth’s Millbay Docks.

It was a financial struggle for Kayleigh Sinclair and Shanice Lobb to get to the Games in Napoli but with the help of donations from a Crowd Funding Page they were able to have the opportunity to go and soak up the atmosphere of being at the games.

For Kayleigh the games were her biggest competition to date. She went into it with an open mind and was determined to enjoy it. In the 3m springboard preliminary round Kayleigh finished in a very comfortable ninth position out of 25. The semi-final went even better with Kayleigh finishing sixth out of 18.

Kayleigh was the only diver in the final to represent Great Britain and to finish in eighth place overall was an overwhelming feeling of emotion, above and beyond her expectation.

Shanice successfully came through the platform preliminary round in 16th place out of 22. Unfortunately for Shanice the semi-final did not go to plan, as she ended up in 15th place out of 18 after a disappointing second dive.

Earlier this year she won the bronze medal in the same event at the British National Diving Cup. Despite the result it did not tarnish the experience or atmosphere which was absolutely brilliant and she met some amazing people.

The highlight of the trip for Shanice was walking out into a stadium full of thousands of supporters. She said: “The feeling I felt and the memory of that night will be something I will always treasure.”

Both Kayleigh and Shanice are grateful for all those around them who made it possible for them to reach this goal and continue to support them, including their coach at the Plymouth Life Centre - Alex Rochas, team mates, family and Plymouth Marjon University.

Meanwhile Plymouth divers were out in force for the National Skills diving competition recently held at the Plymouth Life Centre. It is the biggest skills competition of its kind and attracted more than 250 divers from 32 clubs.

Among the other successful young divers was William Heath who won the silver medal in his class – only 1.7 points behind the top spot, while Oscar Westbury claimed the fourth medal position and Dylan Philpott just missed out on a medal in seventh place.

Other medal winners were Eva Lang who finished sixth in her group, Evan Walker who won the silver medal in the boys – only 1.7 points away from gold – and Alex Whittaker who medalled in sixth position.

Plymouth Diving thanks Plymouth Co-op, who donated a cheque for £300 to the club from the Local Community Fund. It was presented by Mr and Mrs Hendrick to head coach Alex Rochas. The money helped to subsidise the cost of kit required for the competition.

All of the young, up and coming divers are either coached by Tonia Couch, Fito Gutierrez, Ashley Hendrick or Ryan Wills.

College apprentices create Mayflower replica Two groups of City College Plymouth apprentices have created scale replicas of The Mayflower and the Type 23 frigate, HMS Portland.

The apprentices, who are employed by local businesses, including Aldermans, Babcock, Pipex px and Princess Yachts, showcased the vessels at a special presentation event held at the college.

As part of their training, the college, engineering, welding, fabrication, naval architecture, mechanical and electrical apprentices work together in teams to create scale models out of metal with functioning parts.

that sailed from Plymouth to America, which it is hoped will go on display in The Box to coincide with next year’s 400th anniversary celebrations.

They started work on this

in May, allocating roles and responsibilities (from project management to assembly) and working on the engineering drawings, which formed the basis of the ship’s components.

The model was constructed from stainless steel and the apprentices used a range of techniques and machinery to build the ship, from plasma cutting to sheet metalwork and welding Alongside this, a group of 16 Babcock apprentices worked on a replica of the Royal Navy Type 23 frigate, HMS Portland. This was constructed from aluminium and is a water-tight, working model, fitted with an electrical motor.

It’s child’s play for councillors exploring a nursery garden!

Tops Day Nurseries in Cattedown welcomed two very special guests recently on their official open day.

The then Deputy Lord Mayor Cllr Chris Maven and Deputy Mayoress Cllr Sue Dann spent time exploring the nursery garden with the children, balancing on beams, cooking up a treat in the mud kitchen and speaking with managing director of Tops Day Nurseries, Cheryl Hadland about the steps the nursery has taken since joining the Tops Family.

ethos, and was surprised to learn of the award winning group’s most title as the most eco-sustainable nursery group.

Tops Day Nurseries have taken some controversial actions in a bid to save the planet and educate the next generation; including the banning of glitter, DIY baby wipes and now a new pilot is being trialled across the 30 Tops Day Nurseries settings in which parents can trial reusable nappies and other eco products on offer. Cllr Sue Dann was particularly interested in this topic given her passion to support Plastic Free Plymouth.

All aboard for a great family time at Plym Valley Railway this summer

Plym Valley Railway has a host of events coming up in August. Here are the highlights: August 1, 8, 15, 22, 29 Brake Van Rides Take the strain off the school summer holidays and bring the kids down to Plym Valley Railway to enjoy a brake van ride every Thursday during August. Take a ride up to Plym Bridge to enjoy a walk or a picnic before returning on a later trip. Brake Van rides start at 11am from Marsh Mills station opposite the Coypool Park and Ride going on the hour and returning on the half hour with the last trip back at 4.30pm. Modern day fascination with Ancient Egypt Plymouth & District Egyptology Society (PADES) is celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2019.

The small, friendly and welcoming group who share an interest in all aspects of Ancient Egypt has enjoyed a growing membership over the years, with visitors from Devon, Cornwall, Avon and Somerset.

The group normally meet on the first Saturday of each month from September of one year to May of the next. Members can enjoy reduced fees for lectures, and where possible, visits are arranged both within the UK and to other European Countries where there are Egyptology Museum Exhibitions.

PADES meet for Saturday afternoon lectures and Study Days in the Quaker House, 74 Mutley Plain, Plymouth. The Society is well-established and respected amongst the academic community, and has hosted lectures from many of the UK’s leading Egyptologists and Archaeologists, some currently excavating in Egypt.

One of the Society’s aims is to offer help towards preservation and conservation of what remains of the Ancient Egyptian civilization. To that end it has made offered donations to the Tell Edfu Excavation, The Griffith Institute and the Oxford Expedition to Egypt.

Visitors and guests of all ages are welcome to attend all lectures and study days. Those who have little or no knowledge of Ancient Egypt are welcome, as are those who have studied Egyptology for many years as PADES aims to cater for all levels of knowledge and experience.

Visitors may want to delve deeper into not only the land of Pyramids, Pharaohs, Temples, Tombs and Treasures, but also hear about the everyday life of the Ancient Egyptian family thousands of years ago.

Container shipment of vital humanitarian aid leaves for Greece A 40-foot container shipment of humanitarian aid has left Saltash carrying hundreds of pairs of children’s wellington boots, clothing and teddy bears.

The container of humanitarian aid started its two-week journey to Attika Human Support in Lesvos Greece at the end of June.

It was the eighth container of aid to leave the QStore Business Centre in Saltash organised by Plymouthbased Open Hearts Open Borders (OHOB) Refugee Aid. The OHOB summer container was loaded with around 10 tonnes of humanitarian aid items including 35 boxes containing hundreds of pairs of new wellington boots, 1500 bottles of shower gel, dozens of nappies, wet wipes and toiletries, clothing, tinned and dried food, buggies and pushchairs, towels, blankets, sleeping bags, and also included donated computers from Marjon University for the Better Days Education Project and 12 boxes of teddy bears donated by the Teddies Trust.

Over the last six months volunteers and

refugee aid groups and charities from across Devon and Cornwall have collected and sorted through thousands of donated items of clothing, food, toiletries and baby items for this shipment to Greece.

Founder and co-ordinator of OHOB Faraday Fearnside said: “We work very closely with other refugee aid groups and our partners in Greece make the container shipments happen twice a year.

In the run up to the shipments I am in contact, on a weekly basis, with Attika Human Support, this ensures we collect and sort aid that is required because needs can change.”

As well as the refugee groups and charities collecting for this shipment, donations have also come from the community, not only in the South West but as far as Norfolk, Reading and East London.

Faraday said: “It’s amazing how the community pulls together for each shipment; we are always blown away by the generosity of the South West. So much aid is given when so many people are experiencing their own difficulties.

“Each time we ship aid it reaffirms to me that there is goodness in this world despite so much bad news and political backlash. I really do hope that one day we won’t need to ship aid anymore, but until that day arrives OHOB will keep collecting, sorting and shipping.”

The second 40ft shipment of the year will leave Saltash in December and will provide winter aid items to support those in the camps during the colder months. The container will be filled with winter items, including several hundred tents and sleeping bags salvaged from festivals across the UK.

The next van to go to Mobile Refugee Support in France leaves on Friday 5th July and will be filled with tents and sleeping bags, mobiles phones and batteries and food.

OHOB and their South West partners also support a number of local homeless and charitable projects across the South West and support with household and essential items and provide household and essential items for resettlement.

Why it’s important to be an encourager THE

Experience

Encouragement is one of the most valuable, and often most underestimated aspects of human life. We have all at one time or another felt it’s effects and yet it is something which can be hard to give out and to most of us it really does not come naturally.

I have no idea why but giving out encouragement and positive affirmation to another person can often feel slightly awkward and is something we can tend to avoid. Yet we will all have positive thoughts and feelings for people, the reasons why they are our friends and why we like spending time with them are two such examples. But what good is it just keeping those things to ourselves?

Encouragement can be related to who we are as people but also can relate to things that we do or want to get involved in. In my experience it has often been encouragement that has helped me to step out into opportunities that my own fear, doubt and insecurities may have held me back from.

One big example of this is presenting radio shows on Cross Rhythms Plymouth. Anyone who knew me growing up would know that

public speaking, presenting and being on stage was much more of my brothers’ domain and something that I shied away from.

Yet I was given the opportunity to be involved in the radio station and to present on air and it was encouraging words from friends and colleagues that helped me to step out of my comfort zone. Encouragement has continued to build my confidence in something that I know wasn’t completely natural to me!

As well as knowing what it feels like to receive encouragement we all know, often all too well, what it is like not to receive it and to have self-doubt creep in to our minds about our value and worth. Without Dave Simpson encouragement we can also lose confidence in the things we do and it can become all too easy to give up.

An ancient proverb in the bible says that ‘the tongue has the power of life and death’. In other words with the things we say we can either build people up or tear them down.

We live in a society which is quick to tear down and discourage. The media is mostly critical of people in authority and anyone who is in the public eye. A large part of this is vital as it keeps politicians and public figures accountable but how often is it balanced with encouraging comment on those who use their authority effectively and for the common good? It can seem quite rare.

This culture of criticism and discouragement can rub off on us and if we’re honest it is often much easier to speak negatively about someone than positively.

A close friend of mine recently said something that challenged me deeply about giving out words of encouragement. He told me that he would rarely tell people he loved what he really thought of them and was known in his family for giving out very short birthday and Christmas cards with little more content than signing his name. However when one of his family was diagnosed with a terminal illness he realized every opportunity he had

I was very blessed to grow up with two very supportive parents who would often encourage me in who I was as a child and also in terms of things I did and wanted to get involved in.

This helped to form in me a positive sense of my own value and identity but I know for many people this wasn’t their experience and for some of you reading this your upbringing may well have been quite the opposite.

This need not leave you feeling left out and without hope though as the biggest encourager that any of us can know is the perfect parent for all of us, that is God. No one knows us better than the one who created us and it has been my experience that knowing God’s love and affirmation personally is stronger than anything we can receive from another person.

Mayflower 400 year to bring Plymouth a brand new town crier Thirteen contestants will line up on the evening of July 25 at Plymouth Guildhall to compete for the position as Plymouth’s Mayflower 400 Town Crier, dedicated to raising awareness of the Mayflower 400 year long programme of events and activities that will mark the 400 year anniversary of this historic voyage to America.

A panel of six judges including Judi Spiers and Lord Mayor of Plymouth Councillor Richard Ball will pick the winner in the style of Britain’s Got Talent and members of the public are invited to come along and join in the vote on the evening to help pick the best crier.

The Town Crier Competition, brought to life by three residents from The Hoe and funded by the Mayflower 400 Community Sparks cultural programme, starts at 7pm with entry being free.

Plymouth Morris Dancers will entertain the audience outside the Guildhall from 6pm before the competition begins.

The entrants have been put through their paces in readiness for the evening by mentors, Dartmouth and Kingsbridge town criers Les Ellis and Roger Pinder.

Les will also act as Master of ceremonies for the evening.

The winner will have no time to rest on their laurels as they will jump straight into the International Town Crier competition in Devon on Friday 26, Saturday 27, and Sunday 28 July.

Sky is currently in her second year at Plymouth College of Art and has high hopes of breaking into the world of animation: “I’d say I have a fairly cartoony style. I use strong shapes and lines in my work and would like to focus on designing characters for animations in the future.”

Along with the main prize, the artist with the most votes will also receive a free 12-month coach pass, £500, two tickets to Hampshire’s Boomtown Fair in August and a one-to-one development day with an established artist resulting in their work being showcased at the High Vis Festival in Birmingham in September.

An up-and-coming artist from Plymouth College of Art has been named as a finalist in a UK-wide art and design competition run by National Express.

Sky Griffiths is up against seven other finalists to win the chance of seeing her work come to life across the side of an iconic 14-metre-long National Express coach which will transport passengers around the country for an entire year.

Nineteen-year-old Sky said she was delighted to have been shortlisted in this competition by the UK’s largest coach operator: “I travel by coach to my home city of Bristol all the time so the possibility of seeing my work on one is very exciting.”

Artists were given free rein to showcase their individual styles in their entries, which were then whittled down to a final eight.

These meetings start at 10.30am and end at 1pm, on the second Friday of the month many buses stop outside the Co-op and if you come by car, parking is usually available. We also have regular social events held on alternative Fridays which are held at the Oak Villa Sports & Social Club in Ferndale Road, Plymouth just down the road from Weston Mill Cemetery. There is a bus which stops quite near it, and there is a large car park virtually next door to the hall. These meetings are from 2pm to 4pm and we supply a very good buffet and as with all of our meetings we do have a raffle.

Members of our group have free access but nonmembers will be asked to pay £2. Anyone intending to come regularly to these meetings would find it more economical to pay the £12 single/£20 double annual membership fee, and would also be eligible to take advantage of our subsidised taxi scheme (£2 each way). Children invited to join the big Space Chase Plymouth Library Service is calling for children to sign up to read six books this summer for the Summer Reading Challenge 2019.

The theme this year is Space Chase, inspired by the 50th anniversary of the first moon landing. Every child who signs up to read six books over the summer holiday will get a collectable mission folder to keep a record of their challenge journey – and if they complete it they will be presented with a medal at their library and a certificate during their school assembly.

Children can choose any books they like – novels, fact books, joke books, eBooks and audiobooks all count, just as long as they are borrowed from the library. It’s free to sign up and there are stickers and prizes to collect along the way.

The challenge is aimed at four to 11 year olds and there’s a mini-challenge for the under fours. Deputy Council Leader Peter Smith said “The Summer Reading Challenge is a

Dartmoor Rambling Club The Dartmoor Rambling Club is a long established Rambling Club based in Plymouth. We have a regular programme of walks on alternate Wednesdays and at some weekends. The Wednesday walks generally use public transport from Plymouth City Centre to the start of the walk. Wednesday walks are usually about 8 to 10 miles on Dartmoor or on the coast and are taken at a pace to suit the participants. Free, fun family festival Looking for some summer fun but baulking at the cost of the average music festival or family day out?

Check out Creation Fest, a free music, skate and family festival, held at the Royal Cornwall Events Centre, Wadebridge from August 3 to 9.

Fresh from their stint at Glastonbury, award-winning family folk trio Wildwood Kin will be bringing their inimitable rhythms and harmonies back to the Big Shed on August 5, followed by Britain’s Got Talent semi-finalist, Josh Curnow, who recently supported Tom Walker at Perranporth’s Bands in the Sands who takes the stage on August 6.

Plus, over 70 of the best contemporary Christian bands and artists performing on four music stages over seven days, including music on the hour, every hour on our Big Top music stage.

For skaters, the giant indoor skate park will once again be open from midday to 10pm every day, with free skate sessions, girls skate, coaching, comps and demos from our team of international pro skaters.

There’s also a mind-boggling array of free, fun activities for everyone, including an all-day kids and youth programme, sports matches on the street pitches and in the sports cages, art workshops that include water colour painting, making your own fairy crown and pottery sessions (a £2 charge is made for some arts workshops to cover materials) and over 100 talks and seminars that cover life, faith, parenting, marriage, leadership and a whole host more.

After dark, the late-night programme includes a bonfire, silent disco, barn dance, comedy night, fireworks, open mic night and nightly film screenings.

College students celebrate success Community work, volunteering and overcoming adversity were just some of the many achievements celebrated at City College Plymouth’s recent Student of the Year awards.

The annual ceremony recognises students who have really gone above and beyond making a positive contribution to the college or local community, or overcoming personal challenges to achieve highly in their studies.

The award winners were joined by family, friends and their nominating lecturers as well as local employers who presented five special awards. They all enjoyed a delicious three-course meal prepared by the college’s hospitality and catering students before receiving their certificates and prizes.

Ben Manning, deputy principal of City College, said: “The Student of the Year awards ceremony is an important event for the college and a great way to round off our academic year. It provides us with an opportunity to celebrate and acknowledge some of the remarkable achievements of our students and recognise publicly their hard work and commitment.

“These students, some of whom have had to overcome additional barriers, have all achieved fantastic results and deserve to be congratulated. The staff at the college are enormously proud of their accomplishments and the way in which they reflect so well on the city.

“It really is an honour to celebrate the outstanding qualities and achievements of our students and to share in their successes with family, friends and tutors.”

Award Winners - College Awards Max Lavis, 20, from Stoke Apprentice of the Year Max left school at 16 and with his employer, student accommodation company Tern Quay, he has progressed with his painting and decorating qualifications from a traineeship to an Apprenticeship. He has demonstrated his ability to learn and has quickly gained valuable skills and experience, and is now taking the lead on various projects in his workplace. Max has consistently exceeded his employer’s expectations.

Max said: “I’ve worked hard to succeed, and the support I’ve had from both the college and my employer during my Apprenticeship has helped me to push through all of the challenges I’ve faced. My time at City College has taught me perseverance and leadership skills, and I am proud to now be supervising and supporting a new apprentice in my workplace.”

Lewis Matti, 21, from St Budeaux Endeavour Award Lewis is a student who has faced numerous personal challenges, but is ready to face whatever life throws at him. Not only is Lewis highly motivated to succeed, but he is described by his lecturers as “an incredibly

Lewis said: “I’ve benefited from taking part in a variety of work placements during my Independence and Life Skills course and also been supported to swim for the Special Olympics and to work towards the Duke of Edinburgh Award. I love the college and with my increased confidence have enjoyed being a student representative, passing information between staff and my fellow students.”

Employer sponsored awards Bracken Mitchell, 18, from Stoke Community Engagement Award, sponsored by the Real Ideas Organisation Bracken is a Health and Social Care student who works hard, supports her peers and takes up every opportunity to gain valuable work experience and help others. Whilst this can be expected from someone hoping to start a career in the care industry, Bracken’s nominating lecturer highlighted that she is someone who stands out from the rest for going the extra mile.

Jenny Bishop from the Real Ideas Organisation, said: “We chose Bracken as the winner for this year’s Community Engagement Award for her participation in work experience opportunities across a number of community settings during her course, but also her active involvement as one of the college’s Student Ambassadors. As an Ambassador, Bracken regularly delivers tours to potential students and their families, and talks to new and potential students about the

college. I love the fact that Bracken lives for the college brand and is really integrated into the college community.”

Tom Smith, 18, from St Budeaux High Achiever of the Year Award, sponsored

by Devon and Plymouth Chamber of Commerce Tom juggles his full-time course in Sport with a judo career that has suffered numerous knockbacks due to repeated injury, which has put his selection for Great Britain in jeopardy.

Helen Hart from the Devon and Plymouth Chamber of Commerce said: “We chose Tom as the winner for this year’s High Achiever of the Year Award due to his positive ‘can do’ attitude and perseverance in order to succeed. We were really impressed that Tom was able to achieve distinction grades, whilst suffering with a learning disability, and competing at such a high level for his judo.”

Rebecca Mercer, 44, from Crabtree Student Voice Award, sponsored by Livewell Southwest Rebecca (Bex), is a real ambassador for others. Alongside her Access to Higher Education course, where Bex is working towards becoming a Social Worker, Bex is a support worker and advocate for ‘Not Alone’ which is a support group that she runs for transgender and non-binary people in Plymouth. She has also spoken out on TV about the stigma surrounding mental health on behalf of the college.

Hannah Buckingham, 18, from Turnchapel Employability Award, sponsored by RedRok Hannah is a Live Events student who was praised for her high organisation skills, effective communication and turning ideas into reality whilst also managing expectations.

She was nominated for the employability award for her highly professional delivery and planning of the college’s recent Hair and Beauty Show, and, Hannah has taken numerous opportunities to increase her employability skills whilst at the college.

Hannah said: “From meeting crew members at gigs, to working on the Illuminate light festival at the Royal William Yard and in the Drum Theatre at The Theatre Royal Plymouth, as well as numerous college performances as Stage or Production Manager, there have been so many opportunities for me to gain work experience during my time at City College.

“It’s lovely to have been commended for both my professionalism and determination to succeed.”
