Sherford Life Epic moorland ride in aid of St Luke’s At the going down of the sun and in the morning, we will remember them.

How will you be remembering this November? It’s a big month for remembering.

First we have, “Remember, remember, the fifth of November.” It’s very useful remembering stories from history: it helps us to shape what we do in the present.

The more we remember, the more we are able to avoid past mistakes and emulate past good. On Bonfire Night perhaps we can be thankful that our system of government tends more towards being

By Revd Tom Brassil open and accountable than it did back in the 1600s (even if it is still a work in progress!) On top of that, we get the fantastic fireworks, not least those launched across Plymouth Sound!

Later on in the month, and much more importantly, we remember the many thousands of people who gave their lives fighting for our freedom and safety.

Approaching the hundredth anniversary of Armistice Day, the moment that ended World War 1, we have plenty to look back on. We remember both with a sense of solemnity and gratitude.

We are thankful that all those men and women made the ultimate sacrifice on our behalf.

How will you remember? Will you visit the Memorial on the Hoe? Perhaps go to an Act of Remembrance at a local church?

The newly-opened Sherford Vale School will be having their first Remembrance event on Friday November 9. On Sunday November 11 Sherford Community Church will have their first Act of Remembrance at 11am, straight after the regular morning service at 10. Please do come along if you’re in the area.

Our topic for discussion at our service that morning will be the God who works through others to protect the poor and vulnerable, as seen in the story of Ruth.

But we will also remember the one who spoke these words recorded in the Bible: “Greater love has no-one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” (John 15:13).

Jesus himself encapsulates this as he laid down his life not just for his friends but even for those who consider themselves his enemies.

Remembering those brave souls doing the same for us in war brings home the depth of love shown in that act of selfsacrifice, and the depth of gratitude that should mark our response.

Finally in November we have the American festival of Thanksgiving. It’s interesting how often remembering naturally leads to thankfulness, isn’t it? It’s easier to complain than to thank someone; we are more likely to spot things that provoke irritation than things that bring out gratitude.

But a little thankfulness makes a big difference, both to us and those around us. What are you thankful for this November? Who could you make time to thank? And how will you be remembering this November?

Plympton pet supplies shop shortlisted for national award

Local riders among the 1,600 who took part in memory of loved ones The hills and woods of Dartmoor were alive with mud, sweat and gears on Sunday September 30, as 1,600 people donned their yellow tee-shirts and got on their bikes in support of St Luke’s Hospice Plymouth.

Once again, the charity’s annual Tour de Moor cycling challenge was a sellout, with 1600 adrenalin-seekers taking on the tough 23km route or the gruelling 52km route, putting their skills to the ultimate test by tackling the hills up to Princetown.

Young families took part in their droves too, following the more gentle 11km route along Drake’s Trail, enjoying ‘selfie’ stops, a hot chocolate and a quiz along the way.

Sponsored by Print Copy Scan, a local supplier of printers and copiers, Tour de Moor provides for every level of cycling ability, while raising vital funds that help St Luke’s extend its specialist end of life care to more people who desperately need it at home, in hospital and at the specialist unit at Turnchapel.

Braving the 52km route was a father taking on the toughest challenge in memory of his beloved son. It was a poignant day for Chris Weir, 69, of Plympton, participating to support St Luke’s following their care for son Mark, who sadly passed away in January this year aged just 36, having been admitted to the specialist unit at Turnchapel over Christmas, following time in hospital.

At Turnchapel, Mark was able to spend precious time with visiting family, including his children, who received support through St Luke’s Patches pre-bereavement programme for youngsters facing the loss of a parent.

Chris said: “Mark was always up for a challenge.

He was so brave and I’m so proud of him. St Luke’s gave such great care, which helped him to die peacefully but also to live until he died. Events like Tour de Moor are important because the more people who know about St Luke’s, the greater their impact.”

And riding the 23km route in memory of step-father Steve Mills – who passed way at the specialist unit three years ago - was Daniel White, who lives in Plymstock.

Daniel said: “’Daddy Steve’ as we knew him was an amazing guy. I’ll always remember how friendly everyone was when we visited him and the beautiful gardens where we could just sit and enjoy the peaceful surroundings together. My mum Time for a joke before the start

The shop has been chosen as one of three finalists in the Dog Friendly Awards for Best UK Pet Shop.

The finals of the awards will be held at Discover Dogs in London on the October 20 when the overall winner will be announced.

Business owner Sammie Hunt said: “The awards are voted for by customers so that makes them very special and prestigious.”

Redpaw customer Michelle Ryder was pleased with the shop’s shortlisting for the award. She described the shop as ‘superb, friendly and welcoming, great for advice too.’

The awards encompass a whole range of businesses in addition to pet shops, ranging from pubs, hotels and restaurants to high street stores who could benefit from the improved atmosphere that dogs foster or a firm whose employees could benefit from the reduced stress that dogs help to create.

Among South West successes in the awards last year were Perranporth Beach which won an award for being a dog friendly beach and Woofstock which picked up an award for best dog friendly day out.

Also taking part in the 23km were couple Dave and Jay Trestain from Padstow, Cornwall, cheered on by young daughter, Dora, and Dave’s mum, Jane.

Dave, who is receiving treatment for cancer, was excited to be doing Tour de Moor for the second year and pleased the timing of the event fitted in after recent surgery.

Jay said: “It was so brilliant doing Tour de Moor together last year that we’ve both looked forward to it – the anticipation has helped us a lot. There’s such a great party atmosphere with loads of other families.”

With Tour de Moor raising almost £100,000 last year and the event once again completely selling out this time, people of all ages rallied to make it a day to remember.

Among them were five-year-old Jacob Cottam and dad Chris of Plympton, who took on the more gentle 11km route along Drake’s Trail. They heard about the annual event through Jacob’s school, Plymouth College, and were excited to be combining fitness with fundraising for St Luke’s.

Chris said: “Jacob was so excited on the day, he dived on me! It’s such a great thing for us to do together and it really has the feel-good factor. It was great to see everyone enjoying such an electric atmosphere.”

Lewis Gunn, 25, and Ryan Mortlemans are friends who signed up for Tour de Moor for the sheer exhilaration of the challenge and took on the 23km route together. Lewis said: “We both do loads of cycling and this was a great opportunity to take on a more extreme challenge. Parts of it were pretty gruelling but it was all amazing. It’s Plymouth’s answer to the Tour de France!”

Claire Luckhurst, Event Fundraiser for St Luke’s said, “What a fantastic day! We’re hugely grateful to everyone who’s braved the course today. It’s an incredible achievement and the money they’ve raised will go direct to our compassionate care for patients and their families when time is running short. Everyone who took part has done us all proud!”

St Luke’s would like to recognise the kindness of the Maristow Estate and Buckland Abbey for providing the use of their land this year, Dartmoor National Park Authority and Devon and Cornwall 4 x 4 Response for their vital support, and the Plume of Feathers pub for help with facilities.

Welcome refreshment after the race

Plympton Community Council has welcomed the formation of a new bank which aims to open branches in the South West.

South West Mutual will serve the four western counties of England and plans to launch in 2020 subject to regulatory approval.

On their website they say: “We will serve personal and business customers with current accounts, savings and loans.”

The firm is also focused on allowing customers to bank in the way the customers themselves want.

Its website says: “Choose how you want to bank - we will open branches as well as offering state of the art online and mobile banking.”

The Community Council resolved to welcome the formation of the new bank and to write to them putting a case for a branch to be opened in Plympton.

Plympton Community Council vice chairman Andrew Hill said: “There was a lot of discontent in the local community when NatWest closed its Plympton branch earlier in the year.

“It is refreshing therefore to hear of a bank planning to open branches and we would very much like to see a branch of this new bank established here in Plympton.”

South West Mutual director and co-founder Tony Greenham said: “South West Mutual was established in February this year to seek a banking licence. We are impatient to start serving communities that are looking for an ethical, relationship-driven and customerowned bank that champions the south west.

“However, starting a new bank is a long process involving considerable regulation and detailed planning. Our ambition is to gain our banking licence and open the first branches in 2020.”

All monies raised will be used to support the Dalit women of North India. Numbered in many millions, they are regarded as untouchable and are victims of many crimes which often go unpunished.

Yet these women are fighting back against oppression and social inequality by means of a national movement which gives some hope for the future. All are welcome to the coffee morning where they will find a friendly, welcoming atmosphere and admission is free. Illuminate Nov 22 to 25 The incredible light-based festival, Illuminate, returns to Plymouth’s historic Royal William Yard.

The festival offers an immersive experience, with projections and light installations set out across the Yard, live performances and interactive opportunities. New for this year is the use of water screen technology, as artists experiment with projecting onto the sea as well as land. Illuminate is free to attend and runs for four days, an increase from three last year. Families are welcome and there are plenty of interactive and playful workshops for everyone to get involved in, both during and in the lead-up to the festival. See more details on page 23.

Plymouth Christmas Market Nov 29 to Dec 16 The city centre Piazza will be transformed as the Christmas Market sets out more than 50 beautiful log cabin style trading stalls. Pick up some individual and unique Christmas gifts. Over 50 wooden cabins, festooned with fairy lights, will house traders from the South West and beyond, selling everything from sweet treats to handmade jewellery and even Christmas trees! Warm up with a drink from the Bavarian Bar or tuck into some delicious festive food from one of the many street food stands on offer.

Several Conservatives from Plymouth and South West Devon joined the event at Mount Batten Beach, organised by Plymouth Beach Clean Volunteers

A volunteer-led campaign to clean up beaches across the South West has been labelled ‘a huge success’ by organisers, who thanked the many people who joined the mission to rid the region’s coastline of plastic waste and other litter.

South West Conservatives organised their own Big Beach Clean in September, tied in with other campaigns and projects across the region, including the Great British Beach Clean led by the Marine Conservation Society.

Local Conservatives organised or joined clean-ups at seven beaches in Devon, four in Cornwall, six in Dorset and one in South Gloucestershire.

Peter Booth, chairman of South West Conservatives, said: “The Big Beach Clean was a huge success, with lots of volunteers coming together to lead or join a host of events across the region.

“The response was fantastic and I would like to thank everyone who took part, including local campaigners and groups, elected Conservatives and supporters and, especially, the members of the public who responded to our appeal for help.

“The sheer amount of rubbish collected at the weekend offers a stark reminder of the scale of the problem and why we need to

keep working hard to reduce and eliminate litter around our beautiful coastline.”

Plymstock Radford Councillor, Rebecca Smith, who took part in the Mount Batten beach clean said, “It was fantastic to join in with the Plymouth Beach Clean Volunteers’ biggest beach clean to date. It is really easy to get involved in beach cleans across Plymouth’s beaches meaning we can all do our bit to keep our beaches clean.

“I’d encourage anyone in Plymstock and across the whole city who is inspired to give beach cleaning a go to contact Plymouth Beach Clean Volunteers. It’s fun, educational and with plenty of beaches to choose from, easy to access.”

Environment Secretary Michael Gove described the Big Beach Clean as ‘a fantastic initiative’. He encouraged people to take part in beach cleans and “join our mission to leave the environment in a better state than we found it”.

Mr Gove said: “The South West has some of the most beautiful beaches anywhere and it’s vital we protect them for future generations and ensure our great coastline and wildlife are not damaged by plastic waste and other litter.

“I would like to pay tribute to the local Conservatives and the many other people and organisations in the South West who are

HOSPITAL LIBRARY SEEKS MORE VOLUNTEERS

The staff and patients library at Derriford Hospital is seeking some additional volunteers. The library has a stock of over 1,000 books and is run by the Royal Volunteer Service.

One of the recent additions to its stock is a fast moving war novel based in a Devon village in 1920 and was donated to the library by its local author.

Tony Rea from Ivybridge was a guest on Charlotte Willis’ teatime show on Hospital Radio Plymouth a few weeks ago where he told listeners more about his book ‘Red Sky Over Dartmoor’ which was published last year. He originally suggested offering up a copy of the book as a prize for a competition on the radio station but later agreed to an alternative suggestion of donating it to the hospital library to increase the potential number of people who would benefit from the donation.

The library is on level 5 at Derriford hospital and is open on alternate Mondays between 11am to 2pm and every Thursday from 10am to 3.15pm.

A mobile trolley service also visits patients at their bedsides on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays where books can be loaned from the stock on the trolley.

It is to help keep this important service going that the RVS is looking for new volunteers.

The project is the brainchild of Andrew Briggs, the President of the Plympton Chamber of Commerce.

Many of the businesses already had holders on the outsides of their shops used for suspended Christmas trees in the lead up to Christmas each year and Andrew thought it would be a good idea to put these to use prior to then, to mark the important 100th anniversary of the end of WW1 Andrew said: “There should be between 47 and 50 flags by the time we get to the Armistice. I would also like to express a big thank you to John Boulden for manufacturing all the flag poles.”

The flying of the flags has been warmly received by Plympton residents with a number posting positive comments about it on social media.

First World War exhibition at Ford Park Cemetery

An exhibition focused on the Great War years is running at the Ford Park Cemetery Visitor’s Centre until Sunday November 18.

The exhibition, entitled ‘The War to End All Wars’ is open to the public on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10.30am to 3.30pm and Saturdays and Sundays from 12.30pm to 3.30pm.

The annual Christmas Fair takes place on November 24 between 11am and 3pm with stalls in various places including the Visitor Centre, Northey Rooms and in the Victorian Chapel.

Stalls will include Christmas crafts, homemade cakes, bric a brac, books and there will be opportunities to win a prize on the games stalls. Entrance fee is 30p.

Tickets will be on sale for the Grand Christmas Draw and the chance to purchase (or order) homemade Christmas wreaths.

Refreshments will be on sale throughout the day.

Calls for action on overflowing clothes banks Calls have been made for charities and recyclers to get a grip on collections from Plympton’s clothes banks after many are left frequently overflowing.

Former Plympton Stannator Andrew Hill said he was ‘exasperated’ after being unable to find a recycling bank with capacity to take a bag of clothes he wished to get rid of one Sunday last month.

He said: “I spent a significant part of the afternoon unsuccessfully trying to donate a large bag of clothing to a good cause.

“I dropped into Sainsbury’s at Marsh Mills only to find the two Oxfam containers stuffed full and not able to get anything more prized into them.

“At the Mudge Way car park the British Heart Foundation collection point was overflowing onto the floor and the nearby blue clothes bank was so full you couldn’t pull the tray open to put any more in.

“Then at Chaddlewood the Salvation Army clothes bank was also full with a surplus starting to build up on the floor which will not do it much good in wet weather.

“The fact all these bins are so full does demonstrate how generous the townsfolk of Plympton are in supporting good causes but by the same token it is important the organisations running these clothes banks ensure a sufficient frequency of collection to pick up the donations being made.”

Local councillors have also been calling for action to be taken in relation to the overflowing containers.

Chaddlewood Councillor Glenn Jordan said: “I and Councillor Terri Beer as well as other Plympton Councillors are regularly taking this up with the council to get them emptied and the areas around them cleaned up.”

A Plymouth City Council spokesman said: “We work closely with the owners of the clothes banks in Mudge Way and Chaddlewood car parks.

“Although we are not responsible for emptying them, we have agreed the siting of the banks and can ask the company to tweak the collections schedules if needed.

“If a clothes bank is full, and the contents are over-spilling and creating an obstruction, then we would encourage members of the public to report it to us via our website.”

One charity has already agreed to add an extra collection day following the highlighting of the problem. Millie Caffull, communications manager for the Salvation Army, said: “Until now, collections took place on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.

Thanks to the diligence of the public and for this message in particular, we have increased the collection frequency, so that collections will now take place on Mondays, Tuesdays,

Thursdays and Saturdays.” The new collection rota started at the beginning of October.

Ms Caffull added: “If this or any other clothing bank is found to be full, donors are encouraged to call the helpline number displayed on the clothing bank to make us aware of the problem. When the helpline is called, a collection takes place within 24 hours.

“We ask that donors do not leave their donations outside a full bank as this

encourages further fly tipping and can damage the donations. Instead, donors should keep their donations and deposit them when the bank is empty, which should be the following day.”

The British Heart Foundation has also pledged to review its collections from the container in the Mudge Way car park.

Tasty sum raised by KF Kitchens KF Kitchens joined the masses of Macmillan supporters in September as they held their first coffee morning to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support Charity.

The World’s Biggest Coffee Morning is Macmillan’s biggest fundraising event, inviting people, organisations and businesses to host their own coffee morning.

KF Kitchens, who are based in Farady Mill joined in the fun, raising a total of more than £560 from cake sales and a raffle. Raffle prizes included small Bosh appliances, Quooker glass, Neff mugs, cookbooks and aprons, and much more.

Hannahwood celebrates 10th anniversary with a fab party!

Hannahwood, the young adult provision at Hannahs Ivybridge, celebrated its 10th anniversary with a party for the young adults, their families and staff.

The Dame Hannah Rogers Charity was founded in 1767 and has been enabling and enriching the lives of children with disabilities ever since.

In 2008, they saw a desperate need for young adults with disabilities and consequently opened Hannahwood, a transition programme for young people aged 19 and above.

Everyone at Hannahs Ivybridge came together to celebrate this big milestone in the charity’s history.

There was plenty of wonderful entertainment and a delicious buffet.

The excellent band Voodoo got everyone in the party mood. There was also great entertainment from Sensory Spectacular who provided the accessible photo booth and face painting together with a bouncy castle and sumo suit wrestling provided by Fun-tasia. All together it was a great evening of entertainment, food and celebration for the young people, families, staff and visitors.

Hannahs director of adult services, Wayne Fulton, said “The event was to say a big ‘thank-you’ to our staff and all of those who work so hard, and with such dedication, to enrich the lives of the young adults we support.

“The charity, whose care has been rated as ‘Outstanding’ by the Care Quality Commission, has been providing services for children with disabilities for over 250 years. Ten years ago it developed Adult Services in response to the growing need of people leaving the school setting.

It was lovely to see everyone come together to celebrate this landmark in the charity’s history.”

City Council pledges to tackle modern slavery Plymouth City Council has committed to tackling modern slavery by signing the charter which highlights the issue.

Councillor Chris Penberthy, Cabinet Member for Housing and Co-operative Development signed the Charter Against Modern Slavery on behalf of Plymouth City Council at a recent Cabinet meeting.

Is it estimated that there are 13,000 people affected by slavery through trafficking and exploitation each year.

The Charter has been created to ensure that council supply chains, which account for £50bn of spending annually in the UK, don’t support organisations that profit from modern slavery.

This will be done by training procurement teams to recognise and challenge signs that contractors may be using modern slaves.

Councillor Penberthy said: “It is a sad fact that slavery still affects so many individuals in the UK in 2018 and Plymouth City Council is determined to do its part to eradicate it. Today we are making it clear that we will require our

contractors and supply chains to fully comply with the Modern Slavery Act 2015, and any unusually low-cost tenders will be confronted by our officers.”

Alongside the charter, Councillor Sally Haydon, Cabinet Member for Customer Focus and Community Safety, announced that the Council will be supporting Anti-Slavery Day on October 18. One of the key tools to reporting suspected modern day slavery available to the public is the Safe Car Wash app.

Councillor Haydon said “We know, unfortunately, that many different kinds of industries benefit from the suffering of people in communities across the UK including fisheries, beauty and farming.

“The Safe Car Wash app is a free tool that I’d encourage anyone who uses hand-car washes to download and use.

By answering a few simple questions about what you see and experience the app assesses the likelihood of modern slavery occurring and asks people to call the Modern Slavery Helpline if necessary.”

Hele’s school in Plympton has launched a new Junior Leadership Team (JLT) for the 2018-19 academic year.

The team is led by head girl Amelia Harris and head boy Jack Trebilcock and they are supported by assistants Molly Disney, Isobel Thomas, Kesiea Bonnage, James Oliver, Jack Ripley and Daniel Michaels.

Amelia Harris explained that the JLT’s priorities were focussed on ‘improving the school environment with a priority on reducing plastic waste and improving recycling at the school.’

Jack Trebilcock stressed how the JLT wanted to ‘leave a legacy for younger students to follow’ and after being students at the school for seven years ‘sustainability was a real

passion for all the students on the JLT.’ The students have already started identifying areas of the school environment they want to improve and they are fired up to make a positive change for Hele’s students using money raised from the sponsored walk in the summer.

Molly Disney said: “We want to bring sustainability to the attention of all at the school and challenge their mindset as to how they use plastic.”

The JLT will certainly be busy this year as they play a leading role in school events, assemblies, organise the school council, lead student meetings and represent the different houses as house captains.

Kairn Stone, director of Post 16 at Hele’s will be working alongside the JLT to develop their leadership and project management skills.

Kairn said: “We are all impressed by their drive and commitment, but more importantly

they embody what Team Hele’s is all about, they have a big heart and work hard for each other and the student body”.

Principal Justine Mason added: “The school places great value on student leadership and we want all students to have their voice represented.

“The JLT provide the link between staff and students and these students are a credit to the school; students and staff are incredibly proud and excited for the year ahead.”

Fourteen students from Hele’s School in Plympton took up the opportunity through Camps International to explore Peru for four weeks in the summer.

During this time, the students, from Year 11, 12 and 13, were engaged in several once-in-a-lifetime experiences.

These experiences included a five-day trek through the Andes, culminating in a guided visit to the Inca city of Machu Picchu, a week on Lake Titicaca and an expedition to Colca Canyon to view Condors in their natural habitat.

The focus of the visit, however, was to work in local, deprived communities to provide them with better facilities. The students worked extremely hard on a range of projects, from building picnic tables for a primary school near Lake Titicaca, to constructing a green-house from heavy adobe bricks in a secondary school near Cusco.

The students benefited enormously from their adventures and overcame a number of challenging obstacles, from

climbing mountains to dodging angry bulls!

In addition, everything the students did was at high altitude, with just twothirds of the normal oxygen intake in England.

Hele’s teachers Mr Farmer and Mrs Aldersley, who organised the expedition, were both enormously proud of the effort and achievement of the brave adventurers and it is fair to say that, with

one exception, everyone was well and truly out of their comfort zone.

That exception was the expedition leader, Spike Reid, who is a former Hele’s student himself. Spike ensured that everyone got the most out of the expedition, offering the right amount of support and challenge, guidance and direction.

Hopefully, he will be able to lead Hele’s students on their next adventure!

Move to speed up start of road improvements is voted down

An attempt to see an immediate start to the much awaited improvements to the road network in Plympton was voted down at September’s full meeting of Plymouth City Council.

A set of upgrades known as the Eastern Corridor Junction Improvements Programme involving predominantly Plymouth Road, its various junctions, the top of Cot Hill and the fringe of Glen Road at St Mary’s was originally given a publicised start date of Spring 2018.

Notices posted at the roadside boasted the scheme would improve journey times, be safer for pedestrians and result in more reliable bus services. However after months of no obvious commencement to the scheme, it was announced at the beginning of September that the work would now not get underway until 2019.

At the meeting of the full City Council on Plympton Conservative members lodged a motion of notice calling for the work to start forthwith.

The motion was proposed by Plympton St Mary ward Councillor Patrick Nicholson and seconded

by Plympton Erle ward Councillor Terri Beer.

Introducing his motion Councillor Nicholson called for an explanation for the delay, saying: “When the Conservatives left office in May this scheme was pretty much at a stage where it could be implemented. The money was signed off, the detailed design on some of the aspects of the scheme were implementable.”

Cllr Nicholson continued: “This scheme is essential for the economic growth of the eastern corridor. Transport schemes should not be taking as long as they are to implement. The public want to know why there hasn’t been a steady progress in the implementation of that scheme.”

Cllr Beer told the meeting: “My residents fill my inbox on a daily basis with complaints about Plymouth Road, Plympton and Cot Hill. At every junction on Plymouth Road there are delays and hold ups due to mistimed light changes and it’s frustrating.

“The vehicle stacking to turn right off this road is not sufficient and often the main flow of traffic is held up due to vehicles moving through to turn right and blocking Plymouth Road traffic. This happens all the time.”

Cllr Beer also highlighted concerns raised by the electorate about the impact on traffic of the proposed new crematorium near Saltram and the anticipated extra 65,000 vehicle movements which would result from the new facility.

She continued: “Residents in Cot Hill suffer daily from excessive pollution from vehicles stacking on the road outside their properties. The work needs to commence because we cannot cope with the increased vehicle movements on this current infrastructure.”

Replying to the points raised, Labour cabinet member for Strategic Planning and Infrastructure Councillor Mark Coker denied that the scheme was ready to start when the Labour group took charge of the council or that the new administration had delayed progress with the scheme.

He said: “When I sat down for my first cabinet member meeting with officers I asked where are we, what is going on? The answers to Plymouth Road were we couldn’t start yet as we haven’t got the Environment Agency’s consent to work adjacent to Tory Brook.”

He added there were also other issues holding matters up: “We hadn’t got the utilities report on what implications that had to the design and implementation of the scheme.”

Talking of the funding in place for the improvements Councillor Coker commented: “I will spend this funding but I can’t do it and I can’t implement the scheme until those permissions are given. We are 90% of the way there now. We still have to let the contract and the proposed schedules are that the work will commence in January 2019.

Top team to fit out The Box An internationally renowned company which helped Belfast showcase the Titanic and the Science Museum to tell the cosmonaut’s story has been selected to fit out The Box in Plymouth.

Specialist fit-out contractors The Hub have been awarded the contract to transform the interior of The Box on North Hill into a place of wonder, learning and inspiration.

The Hub’s portfolio of projects range from the super-modern cyber security exhibition at Bletchley Park to sensitive showcasing of ancient documents in the Museum of Arabic Science Kuwait. They created blockbuster exhibitions such as David Bowie at the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Age of the Dinosaur at the Natural History Museum and Nelson Navy and Nation at the National Maritime Museum.

Council Leader Tudor Evans said: “Our aim for The Box has been to inspire, enthral and keep people coming time and time again – which is why the exhibitions need to be dynamic, interactive and downright awesome.

“Globally-important museums such as the Victoria and Albert Museum used the Hub to create David Bowie exhibition, which was the V and A’s most successful exhibition ever – that’s how good they are. We have incredible stories to tell and are really excited about the mixture of traditional techniques and modern technology the Hub will use to bring our stories alive.

“From a wall of pickled sea creatures to mesmerizing projections as well as a myriad of gizmos and hands-on gadgets to keep younger visitors utterly riveted, the scale and range of their task cannot be underestimated.”

Plymouth’s Cabinet gave the go-ahead for the £5 million contract to The Hub when they met on October 9.

The Hub face a mammoth task – literally! As well as creating a full-sized woolly mammoth using 3D printing technology, they will be responsible for creating features such as a giant globe with internal 3D projection technology. There will be projection mapping of the Sound and the city to animate the city’s incredible history The Hub team will be creating the look and feel of eight theme-based galleries as well as a further seven spaces for temporary exhibitions. Models, replicas and reconstructions coupled with whizzy graphics and state of the art interactive displays are all planned.

A key part of their work will be creating some really huge exhibition cases for so many precious artefacts.

Councillor Evans added: “In one gallery alone we will have Scott’s skis and Drake’s sword – these astonishing artefacts are Plymouth’s treasures.

The casings need to be specially made, to keep the items in a highly controlled environment to preserve them.”

Shadow Leader of the Council Ian Bowyer added: “This is a once in a life time opportunity to create something incredible for Plymouth. The Hub have worked with the world’s best museums – our ambition is to be the best.

“We appreciate this is a big investment for the city, Arts Council England and the Heritage Lottery Fund and we are absolutely committed to maintaining the highest quality we can. I am convinced this investment will pay huge dividends with additional jobs, visitors and a huge sense of civic pride.”

and Art Gallery, the Plymouth and West Devon Record Office, the local history collections of the Central Library, the South West Film & Television Archive, the South West Image Bank, Plymouth University (including the Arts Institute), the Naval Heritage Centre, the British Broadcasting Company and Plymouth College of Art. The Box construction project is making good progress with the topping out ceremony held last month. Details are coming together on the themed galleries inside The Box. They are: • Mammoth Plymouth – The natural world of Plymouth and the south west from the Ice Age to the present day.

• Port of Plymouth – 3,000 years as a maritime port and how it has grown into the maritime and naval port of today.

• 100 Journeys – This gallery tells the stories of Drake, Cook, Darwin, Scott and those who left the port of Plymouth and changed the way we see and understand the world.

• Media Lab – Using the largest film and television archive in the UK, this will showcase the people

who pioneer, create and experiment with film and media, from the early photographic pioneers to the current digital creatives in the city • Photo Album – Using one of the largest photographic collections in the south west visitors will be able to explore the ‘family album’ of Plymouth through changing thematic displays.

• Memory Box – Around the first floor balcony of the atrium will be everyday objects that will trigger memories of day-to-day life in Plymouth.

• Active Archive – visitors can discover the fascinating stories within the city’s archives, charting how the city grew and changed as well as look at records and manuscripts that give insight into family history as well as where people live.

• Cottonian Reading Room – a modern take on a Georgian reading room will allow visitors to explore the breadth of The Box’s collections surrounded by objects from the Cottonian collection, one of the greatest gifts given to Plymouth.

• Figureheads – 14 ships figureheads from one of the largest collections in the UK will be suspended in a stunning installation in The Box entrance, restaurant and shop. The largest of these figureheads, King Billy will greet visitors on their arrival.

And there’s more. A range of temporary exhibition galleries are being designed to keep art lovers and the curious returning again and again.

• St Luke’s – the former church will be one of the largest art spaces in the south west, capable of hosting major exhibitions from national and international institutions as well as commissions and installations.

• Hurdle - this gallery will house a range of smaller exhibitions from in-house curated shows to touring exhibitions to artists’ responses • Our Art – the ‘stars’ of the city’s art collection will be on show and a programme of changing displays is planned.

• Mayflower – this will host the national Mayflower exhibition which is assembling one of the largest ever number of Mayflower artefacts and loans from across the UK and US ever assembled.

Led by Plymouth City Council, The Box is a partnership with the University of Plymouth and the National Museum of the Royal Navy. Major funding for the project has been secured from the City Council, a £14.8 million National Lottery grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF), Arts Council England, Coastal Communities Fund, Garfield Weston Foundation, University of Plymouth, Wolfson Foundation, Interreg and Mayflower 400.

A formal presentation cheque was handed to Nikki Kean of St Luke’s Hospice. The money was raised at September’s ‘Big Breakfast’ which was hosted by Plympton Chamber and was in conjunction with Plymouth Business Network, Network Plymouth, the Six O ’Clock Club and Down to Business, all getting together to support this worthy cause.

Plympton Chamber spokesperson Stella Goodman said: “As a Chamber we are pleased to support local charities and are happy to work together to bring benefits to the local community.

“The Chamber is now focusing on Light Up Plympton, which will see a Christmas Fair in Ridgeway and the switch on of the town’s Christmas lights on November 26.

Road closures and restrictions at Marsh Mills and Leigham Work to replace safety barriers on and around the Leigham roundabout will continue until Monday October 29.

The barrier upgrade, being carried out

by Highways England and the Council, sees some lane and road closures on the roundabout as well as the slip roads to and from the westbound side of the A38.

Crews are working overnight and at the

weekend wherever they can to complete the upgrade as quickly as possible and minimise disruption to traffic.

Coffee morning raises £520 for Macmillan Cancer Support

A Plympton couple were among many who held an event for Macmillan’s annual World’s Biggest Coffee Morning on September 28.

Val and Alan Street from Chaddlewood have been supporting the event for a number of years and this time their efforts raised £520.

Stannator Natalie Harrison was among those to support it and she called out the winning raffle numbers and brought along a delicious lemon drizzle and apple cake.

Friends and family helped out by coming up with donations of goods for prizes and a bring-and-buy auction. They also baked

cakes and helped to serve coffees and teas.

Past stannator Andrew Hill was invited back to once again perform the role of auctioneer with lots ranging from bottles of wine to a tradesperson’s labour for the day quickly going under the hammer.

There was a chorus of laughter when local MP Gary Streeter was the successful bidder on a modern-day handbag, although he later revealed it was to be a present for his granddaughter.

The winners of two competitions held during the coffee morning were Miriam Willis who guessed 52cm as the length of the veggie roll (just over its actual size of 49cm) and Nikki Chinner who guessed 3.1kg as the weight of the cake (marginally short of its weight of 3.5kg).

British Art Show returns to city

The UK’s largest touring exhibition of contemporary British Art will be heading to Plymouth again in 2021, following the official announcement

by London’s Hayward Gallery that the city has been selected as one of the four host locations for British Art Show 9 (BAS 9).

Plymouth will join Manchester, Wolverhampton and Aberdeen for the ninth iteration of this prestigious exhibition, which takes place only once every five years and showcases new and recent works by Britishbased contemporary artists.

In Plymouth, the exhibition will be led by The Box with a range of other city venues also expected to take part. Plymouth will be the fourth and final destination for the exhibition which will be curated by Irene Aristizábal and Hammad Nasar.

Aristizábal and Nasar were selected by a panel of curators from the Hayward Gallery and the participating cities. They bring international experience to the role and have both worked on major exhibitions in the UK, Europe, America and Asia.

Councillor Tudor Evans, Leader said: “This is another epic announcement for Plymouth and proof that our cultural profile is the highest it’s ever been. British Art Show is a massive exhibition that gives people a chance to experience the very best that British Art has to offer as well as spot the rising stars of the art world.

“We’ve hosted it once before and it led to major developments in the city’s cultural offer and developed our confidence to take bold, ambitious risks with our artistic programming. It’s going to be right here on our doorsteps in 2021 and it’s going to be amazing!”

Plymouth previously hosted British Art

Show 7 in 2011. Over 75,000 visits were made to the exhibition with another estimated 15,000 people taking part in the associated event, education and Fringe programmes.

It was the first time the city had hosted a cross-venue event on such a huge scale.

A number of other multi-site and major partnership projects have followed since including the ‘Walk On’ (2014) and ‘We The People Are The Work’ (2017) exhibitions and the sector-led Plymouth Art Weekender.

Councillor Ian Bowyer, Shadow Leader said: “The last time Plymouth was a host city for the British Art Show, it proved to be a catalyst for the visual arts. Hosting it again in 2021 will be an ideal opportunity for us to continue the momentum and ambition that was established in 2011 and which has continued ever since. What a proud moment for Plymouth.”

New church opens in new town

Sherford Community Church is live following its first Sunday service in September. The church now meets weekly at 10am on Sundays at Sherford Vale Primary School.

The launch service was a happy event which brought together local residents and supporters from outside the new development, and saw young and old worshipping together.

The focus for the service was on the first few lines of Mark’s Gospel which features one of the eyewitness accounts of Jesus’ life.

Church Minister Revd Tom Brassil said: “We saw how he was preceded by centuries of ‘hype’. In fact, Mark said that his book was, ‘the good news about Jesus the Messiah, the Son of God.’ “We left with this question to puzzle over: does Jesus actually live up to the hype?

Hopefully the answer will become clearer as we continue to look in the Bible together in the coming weeks and months! If you want to find out more about why Mark thinks Jesus is good news, why not come along?”

The launch service also featured a special guest appearance by the Right Reverend Nick McKinnel, Bishop of Plymouth. He was delighted to see a new church starting, having worked hard himself behind the scenes to make it happen, and he finished the service by praying a prayer of blessing for the church and for Sherford.

Revd Brassil said “I was equally thrilled to see the coming together of plans that have been laid over months and years. Our ‘tag-line’ as a church is ‘Building a church; creating a community; bringing people together,’ and my hope for the church is that we can live this out.

“I very much hope that Sherford Community Church can be a place where Christians can worship God and deepen their faith together, but you don’t have to be a Christian to be part of the church.

New youth club launched in Plympton

A new youth club has been launched at the Rees Centre on Mudge Way, Plympton. It is a joint project involving Plympton Churches Together and Plymouth City Council.

The youth club will be open every Friday during term time from 7.30pm to 9pm. There will be pool, table tennis, games consoles, sports, music, tuck shop and cafe and lots more. For more info or to get involved with the team contact Dave Wood on 07562 376224.

As a result of the launch of this new youth club, Woody’s at Woodford is being reformated as a junior youth club aimed at ages seven to 11.

Elder Tree celebrates 25th anniversary with a Star Award

Speak to most over 50s these days and we’ll let you know that we don’t consider ourselves old at all!

We are interested in the world around us, have more time to get involved with our communities and the activities that interest us, and are generally getting fitter and healthier all the time.

However, chuck in a few variables that we cannot control, and this sense of wellbeing can diminish. Growing older, sickness, falls, dementia related illness, bereavement, isolation, depression, difficulty getting out of our homes and family and friends moving away – all of a sudden life becomes a lot more difficult.

Elder Tree was founded in 1994 by Irene Tonkin to support older people living in the East End of Plymouth. Since then it has expanded considerably and was commissioned by Plymouth City Council in 2013 to deliver a Befriending Service across the city. This has been so successful that Elder Tree won the ‘Our Partner Star Award’ at the city council’s annual staff awards ceremony.

The council’s website reported: “They are a solid partner providing an outstanding service to customers and helping to achieve many health and social care outcomes whilst fulfilling the Caring Plymouth aims.”

Elder Tree have been celebrating their 25th anniversary with a variety of events, including a barn dance at Plymouth Guildhall and a special get-together for volunteers at the

Referrals to Elder Tree come from statutory and voluntary sector groups, including GPs and from individuals; referral forms can be downloaded from their website, sent out by post, or you can self-refer by phoning in.

There are now over 1150 people that benefit from the support of 125 amazing volunteers and 16 members of staff.

When an individual is referred, the first strategy is to assist them to get out of the house and attend one of the 70 weekly activities in 44 separate locations across

reminiscence sessions, and subsidised group visits to the theatre.

The Active Steps programme delivers ‘lycra free’ exercise and movement for everyone – its very popular seated classes work for those less mobile, and there are other opportunities for those more physically fit to show off their moves. Classes include Tai Chi, Pilates and a Cardio Recovery Class, with 750 people taking part in at least one hour of exercise each week.

When going out is no longer possible, Elder Tree have a one to one volunteer befriending scheme which currently supports 70 beneficiaries to be able to remain independent in their own homes.

Plymouth City Council are the charity’s chief funder, but the other 35% of money to keep the project going needs to be raised by the team through bid writing and charitable donations.

Robbie Nairn, Elder Tree’s chief executive, explained that the charity’s finances will never be fully covered by contributions from its beneficiaries but is passionate that this does not dictate the quality and accessibility of service his team provides.

Low cost local provision close to where beneficiaries live is vital, as well as high class training and support for volunteers.

One to one befrienders are contacted every week by a volunteer co-ordinator to make sure any concerns are passed on, and that additional support is accessed promptly if needed.

There are around 60 new referrals each month, and Elder Tree has been busy recruiting volunteers, increasing their number from 70 to 125 in the last year. They are still in need of many more, as volunteers are the heartbeat and soul of the charity, serving as trustees, befrienders, cooks and activity enablers.

Enquiries are welcome from individuals and organisations keen to make a significant impact to the lives of older people living in Plymouth.

Recently five Livewell employees have been able to offer time to visit at weekends, often a lonely time for those living on their own far from family members.

Robbie himself visits Gordon regularly, who at over 90 years old is one of the last surviving men who sailed with the Merchant Navy Arctic Convoys and also brought vital supplies to Britain during the Second World War. He has some amazing stories and Robbie is not sure who benefits more from these visits, himself or Gordon!

Plymouth’s work to improve mental health gets national recognition Plymouth has received national recognition for its pioneering work to improve the city’s mental health with a visit from Claire Murdoch, National Mental Health Director for NHS England.

Her visit started at the Wellbeing Hub at the Jan Cutting Centre – the first of 12 Wellbeing Hubs planned for Plymouth designed to provide more support for health and wellbeing in the community, before going to the Glenbourne acute mental health in-patient unit, rated as outstanding by regulators the CQC and run by Livewell Southwest, which cares for people who need intensive support.

At the hub, Claire Murdoch saw examples of partners working together to help and support people with anxiety and depression and preventing it developing into more serious illness.

She met volunteers from Colebrook South West and peer support volunteers from charity Heads Count who launched a crisis café at the centre in July, and heard about social prescribing.

Wellbeing Hubs are a feature of Plymouth’s joint integrated commissioning strategy agreed by Plymouth City Council and NHS Northern, Eastern and Western Devon Clinical Commissioning Group.

The aims of the strategy are: • To improve health and wellbeing outcomes for the local population • To reduce inequalities in health and wellbeing of the local population • To improve people’s experience of care • To improve the sustainability of our health and wellbeing system

At the Glenbourne Unit Claire Murdoch undertook a tour of the unit including the place of safety suite, specifically designed as a comfortable and calming space where people at risk to themselves or others are brought in an emergency, as an example of close working between health and police staff.

A round table discussion with Dr Adam Morris, Livewell’s chief executive, Sara Mitchell, Livewell’s strategic mental health lead, and Glenbourne senior staff, was joined by Ann James, chief executive of University Hospitals Plymouth (UHP), Plymouth MP Johnny Mercer, and Carole Burgoyne, Plymouth’s Director for People.

Topics included the work being done to embed mental health support in schools, create mental health partnerships in primary care and joint

working by UHP, Livewell and children’s social care to make it easier for families and young people to get mental health support.

A registered mental health nurse for the past 34 years, Claire Murdoch is also chief executive of Central and North West London NHS Foundation Trust.

The visit was hosted by Plymouth City Council, Northern, Eastern and Western Clinical Commissioning Group, The Wolseley Trust, and Livewell Southwest.

It came just over a week before the launch of Plymouth’s second Wellbeing Hub at Four Greens Community Trust.

Claire Murdoch said: “Hearing how your wellbeing, community and in-patient mental health and the acute services are all working

Declaration of Trust A Declaration of Trust (DoT), also known as a Deed of Trust, is a legally-binding document that records the financial arrangements between joint owners of a property, and/or anyone else who has a financial interest in the property. You make this agreement at the time of buying the property. It applies if the joint owners hold the property as tenants in common, rather than as joint tenants. The document can be comprehensive or relatively simple, depending on what matters the owners wish to include and can help to avoid disputes between owners of property in the future.

Holding as Tenants in common – this allows the co-owners to have their own share in the property so for example two owners may own 50% of the property each or one may own 20% and the other 80%. When

a co-owner dies their share can be left to whoever the deceased owner chooses in their Will.

A simple Declaration of Trust may just specify what percentage share each owner holds. A more complex Declaration of Trust can include many points including, by way of example, the following: •

Who will pay what towards the mortgage and bills;

•

What will happen if one owner wants to sell the property but the other does not;

•

What would happen if the property is in negative equity when it is sold;

•

Who will pay for repairs and upkeep of the property;

•

How the income would be split if the property is rented out.

It is even more important to have a Declaration of Trust where someone has made a financial contribution to a property which was not a loan or a gift to the owners. This is because that contribution may make them a ‘Beneficial Owner’ of the property. This can considerably complicate working out who is entitled to what should a property be sold. Examples of Beneficial Owners include: A person who has contributed a lump sum towards the deposit such as the legal owner’s parents; The legal owner’s partner who now contributes towards the mortgage and upkeep of the property but is not named as an owner on the title;

together with a focus on mental health is music to my ears. What I have seen here today with integrated working across all ages and sectors is a real exemplar and I am very impressed.”

Dr Adam Morris, chief executive of Livewell Southwest said: “This was a really exciting opportunity to highlight the work we are doing with our partners, driving new ways of delivering and improving the services we provide by investing in prevention and partnerships. Claire Murdoch is currently working on the 10 Year Plan for the NHS, and we very much appreciate her interest in what we are doing as she seeks examples of good practice and innovation.”

Councillor Tuffin said: “We were delighted to welcome Claire Murdoch to Plymouth to showcase all the fantastic work our partners are doing to improve mental health in the city.

“Improving wellbeing and mental health is the theme for Thrive Plymouth this year and we have already had a number of high profile national visits including Duncan Selbie from Public Health England who chose Plymouth for the regional launch of the Prevention Concordat for Mental Health, and Simon Stevens, chief executive of NHS England, who officially opened the first Wellbeing Hub for Plymouth in March.”

Dr Shelagh McCormick, Chair of the CCG Western Locality Board said: “It was a great opportunity to demonstrate the fantastic partnership working in Plymouth between health, social care and the voluntary sector. The help being given to people with mental health issues at the Wellbeing Hub is absolutely crucial to keeping people well and independent.”

A Declaration of Trust can also be made retrospectively if it was not done at the time a property was purchased. All of the property owners would however need to consent if this were the case.

Sandbar Sharks arrive

Plymouth’s National Marine Aquarium has become the first in the UK to house Sandbar Sharks, after the arrival of two of them recently. They are now on display in the aquarium’s Atlantic Ocean exhibit.

Sandbar Sharks are a beautiful and interesting species of shark. They are a very powerful looking animal, with larger fins relative to their body size, compared to other shark species. Despite this, they are calm, nonaggressive, and very easy to dive with.

The Sandbar Sharks have arrived in Plymouth from Sea Life in Brighton, as part of its £2.6 Million restoration works. They will stay as permanent residents at the NMA after it was decided not to move the sharks again once the restoration is complete.

The new sharks, one male and one female, join another female Sandbar Shark in the exhibit. The male shark is the smallest of the Sandbar Sharks, which is usual within sharks and rays, making him easy for visitors to spot.

The Atlantic Ocean Tank exhibit is the deepest in the UK and the largest single tank containing 2.5 million litres of water.

The tank is home to some of the NMA’s most iconic residents, including a 2m Lemon Shark, 2.5m Sand Tiger Sharks, Nurse Sharks, and the only Ocellated Eagle Rays in the UK. The exhibit allows the public to walk underneath the tank, 10.8m down and view the incredible marine species from a unique view.

James Wright, curator at the National Marine Aquarium, said: “It’s fantastic that we have been able to welcome these two new Sandbar Sharks to the Aquarium – the only place to see them in the UK. We now have two females and a male shark in the exhibit.

“All of the sharks are mature, we are hoping that they may breed naturally in the future.

“The new sharks have been through a period of settling in, taking residence in the acclimatisation tank while they got used to their new surroundings, and to ensure that the shark’s re-location to the NMA was as smooth as possible.

The Sandbar Sharks join the NMA after spending 15 years at Sea Life Brighton.

Return of Illuminate

Monthly Early Traditional Service (followed by Messy Church) 1st Sunday of every month. 9.30am Traditional Service with hymn books, prayer and a sermon. This is a wonderful time of worship with the traditional contents of a Methodist Service with a modern joyful twist. Members of the Prayer Team are available for you to speak with at the close of the service. You are then invited to go into the Hall for hot drinks and biscuits. This is a great opportunity to meet some of the members of this church and stay for the Messy Activities or just relax and have a chat over a hot drink.

Messy Church - begins at 10.30am with a session of arts, crafts, fun and mess in the Hall for everyone, regardless of age or ability. Hot drinks and biscuits are available and the opportunity to stay for lunch at the Church for a minimal cost. The items made are then taken into the Chapel for a very informal short Service.

The children are asked about the things they have made, before heading back into the Hall for lunch, or more coffee etc. This is a great opportunity to get to know the church and the people involved in it.

Community Groups: Woodford Wives (1st and 3rd Monday of the month at 7.30pm) This group of friendly women meet twice a month to listen to various speakers and meet socially. They also raise funds by holding a Coffee Bar at Harewood House and stalls throughout the year.

The Linda Mortimore School of Dance Mondays 4.15pm8pm and Wednesdays 4.15pm-7pm. Linda trained at the Royal Academy of Dance in London and teaches RAD ballet and the ISTD tap, modern and jazz. Following last year’s success, the spectacular Illuminate light festival will return to the Royal William Yard between November 22 to 25.

From 5.30pm each night, when darkness descends, the Yard will come alive with beautiful projection mapping, playful light installations and interactive pieces, creating a spectacular immersive experience. Created by artists, tech designers, performers, children and young people, the light festival promises to delight visitors of all ages with a fun and inspiring immersive experience.

Now in its second year at Royal William Yard, and as part of the wider Mayflower 400 programme, the festival aims to grow and will open and close the Mayflower 400 commemorations during Thanksgiving in 2019 and 2020.

Claire Honey, project manager, said: “Last year’s festival was an amazing spectacle, enjoyed by more than 5,000 people over three days.

We are really excited to welcome new artists, creating unique, awe-inspiring experiences that will be enjoyed by both adults and children.”

New for 2018, the festival will add a fourth day, running from November 22 to 25. Illuminate will also host a number of artist-led workshops in the run up to the event, for children to participate in celebrations.

Also new is water screen technology, as artists experiment with projecting onto the sea and land.

Illuminate will see installations from local and international artists. Two international artists

invited to showcase their work at the festival are Xavi Bové and Thomas Voillaume.

Spanish artist Xavi Bové’s piece, Visual Songs, is an interactive installation that aims to create a link between songs and its visual representation.

His work is personalised for each visitor, allowing them to take a printed version of their personal creation home.

Voillaume’s work, Human, is a monumental video mapped sculpture. The 8ft figure represents an entity of humanoid form that has taken shape in our reality. French artist Thomas Voillaume likes to mix means of expression, surprising his audience and challenging himself.

There will be many other contributing artists, including University of Plymouth alumni Paige Alexander, 1000 Errors and Jamie Knight. Knight, a former student of Plymouth College of Art, is an Illuminate success story, supported last year to develop his own video mapping practice in Plymouth through the Euranim project, funded by European Commission’s Creative Europe programme.

Illuminate is a free event, open to families and people of all ages, which will run from November 22 to 25, from 5.30pm till 10pm at Royal William Yard. Visitors will be able to enjoy a vast range of food and drink from the Yard’s fantastic resident eateries as well as food and drink stalls.

Pins & Needles Knitting Club 2.30pm (1st and 3rd Wednesday of the month). This traditional hobby has bounced right back up in the popularity charts. People of varying ages are now picking up knitting needles and are all most welcome to come and join this group, which hand-produce and send knitted goods such as jumpers, blankets and hats for poor children in two areas of Romania and are sometimes asked to produce adult hats for Shekinah Mission, asylum seekers and refugees. One of the members makes cardigans, hats and small blankets for the Neo-natal Unit at Derriford

‘Woodys’ Youth Group 6pm-8pm. A new group set up for the community by the church. There is a good mix of children from 8-16 where they can test their scooter and skateboard skills on the ramps and jumps. Air-hockey also available. Youth workers work alongside members of the church and other volunteers to support this wonderful project. Primary-age children session 6-7pm and Secondary-age children session 7-8pm.

Laira Youth Band (Thursdays 7.15pm). The Laira Youth Brass Band started in 1972 from the members of the Sunday school at Laira Congregational Church, it has performed hundreds of concerts over the years, in every corner of the City and beyond. Scores of children have passed through its ranks. Most were taught to read music and to play their instrument whilst in the Band, and many have continued their musical hobby into adult life, some choosing a professional career in music. As well as part of the band performing (amongst

Plymouth’s library service is introducing a new all year round library challenge for children.

The Findalots Library Challenge was launched in all Plymouth libraries during National Libraries Week in October. Aimed at four to 11-year-olds, all children who sign up will receive a special Findalots library card and an activity journal. Each month they will be encouraged to read and take part in activities that aim to show off the full library offer. They will need to visit the library each month to collect stickers and other prizes for taking part. National award for Wendy Plymouth celebrant Wendy Coulton has received national award recognition for Outstanding Funeral Celebrancy Practice.

Families and funeral directors were among those who nominated Wendy for the National Celebrant Awards 2018 which seeks to applaud professional standards, innovation and achievements.

There was a specific award category for the contribution made by celebrants who create and conduct memorable high quality funerals and go the extra mile for the bereaved. There was an overall trophy winner for Outstanding Funeral Celebrancy Practice and a runner up.

Winners were announced at the National Convention for Celebrants in Kettering.

Awards and convention organiser Anne Barber said: “Wendy was a very close runner up in this category. The number of nominations Wendy received shows how much she is respected in the Plymouth area. Nominations said that she is not just a celebrant but a caring and professional individual.”

Wendy said: “I really do appreciate the time and trouble taken by those who nominated me for this award. I genuinely love what I do. It’s a vocation and a privilege to support bereaved people and help them to say their goodbyes and honour the memory of the person who has died in their own way.”

At the convention Wendy led two workshops for celebrants on how to find and set up new venues for non-religious funeral services as an alternative to crematoria chapels. She shared her experience of establishing new venues in Plym Ramblers First and third Sunday in the month A well estab lished walking organisation offering regular walks by experienced leaders all within 20 miles of Plymouth. This statement from Jesus Himself has always intrigued me and it was whilst watching The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe that I had a revelatory moment. The author, C S Lewis not only possessed a brilliant mind but was also really clued into spiritual reality.

In this great piece of literature, Lewis positioned Aslan as depicting Christ and Lucy as the younger sibling out of the four children Chris Cole who found their way into Narnia.

I imagine most folk reading this may have seen the film rather than read the book, but attentive film goers would recognise that as the youngest child, Lucy had the closest relationship with Aslan.

An annual sponsored knitting event organised by the Lions Club of Plymouth has raised £1,500 for local charities.

More than 50 contestants knitted squares which have now been made up into various sized blankets and throws, which have been distributed to hospitals and homes throughout the city.

The trophies were awarded to the winning contestants immediately following the event in April. Now cheques for £600 have been presented to John Branch representing Diabetes UK, and Tracy representing The Local Bereavement Counselling Service.

The remaining £300 will be donated to local Lion charities and individual deserving cases.

The sponsored knitting event in 2019 will be held on Saturday April 13 at the Emmanuel Church Hall in Mannamead. The nature versus nurture debate...

Children developing in hostile environments can develop addictive problems because of selfpreservation and fear.

Of course this impacts on people differently because different people cultivate their own experiences depending on their worldview and personal convictions, choosing to respond to life’s circumstances in their own way since we all have free will. It is the ‘nature versus nurture’ discussion and debate.

When we’re children we depend on the nurture, provision and protection from our mothers and fathers. When, sadly, that goes wrong because of life issues it can damage our levels of trust, confidence, self-worth and identity as children grow into adolescence.

Some neuroscientists believe delayed frontal lobe development explains why adolescents can show poor impulse control and engage in risky behaviours.

During this period of rapid development, the brain’s amygdala section, the area responsible for gut reaction and heightened arousal, might become overactive.

This is all fascinating but the personal revelation for me that started this article, was that the key for Lucy was her childlike trust and love of Aslan.

Maintaining trust in those who have care and authority over us is healthy until that trust is broken.

Caring for children in their innocent years is one of the most sacred trusts we have as human beings.

Why is it so sacred? Because we enable them to keep their hearts open to the gift of love, and to be able to care for each other as they grow.

Life is already tough enough that we don’t want to make it any more difficult for folk, especially the children given in our care as sons and daughters.

The Bible says two things, amongst others, about our spiritual hearts. ‘The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it?’ and ‘Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it’.

Trust is a massive factor in the development of our spiritual hearts and a real value that we as parents can give our children. The question is have the parents themselves had a good and nurturing experience to pass these values on?

The Christian faith does have an answer to these messy life situations and it is this: when you seek God with everything you have in the truth that a little child possesses, despite the reality of your own life experience and open your heart to Him, He will reveal himself as Who He says He is - the One who loves you so much He died for you.

Victory in fight for frigates - now it’s save the Marines The Devonport Task Group has welcomed news that its campaigning has helped secure the basing of the Royal Navy’s new generation frigates in Plymouth and saved the city’s amphibious assault ships from defence cuts.

Families in Plymouth are being given the chance to enjoy free water sports sessions - thanks to funding from Sport England.

The Making Waves Together project is aimed at families in the St Peter and Waterfront Ward of Plymouth, or for anyone with a child at the Plymouth School of Creative Arts in Millbay.

The project started earlier this year and offers taster sessions for families who want to swim, sail, kayak, stand up paddleboard or surf together.

The project leader is Tors Froud from the Plymouth School of Creative Arts and they are working in partnership with Plymouth Youth Sailing, Mount Batten Watersports and Activities Centre, The Lynher River Barge CIC, Red 22 and the Cornwall Surf Academycreating a meaning ful pathway to water based activities as well as supporting individuals and families and becoming part of social action projects.

The Sport England fund is a key part of their focus on helping young people have an enjoyable experience of sport and physical activity so they develop a positive attitude towards being active at an early age and continue being active later in life. The mission is to encourage families to get active together,

because parents and close family members can have a big impact on children’s experiences.

Sport England research shows that they are also significant role models in helping their children get active - because how a parent behaves impacts what a child sees as important.

Parents who are active themselves and enjoy it, can encourage positive feelings about exercise and its value in their children. Yet many parents lack the skills or confidence to take part in a sport with their children as they fear they cannot keep up.

For example, if adults don’t know how to swim or lack confidence near the sea, this has a knock-on impact on the activities they feel they can do as a family and how much their encourage children to take part.

Families can enrol in taster days in one or more of their chosen activities, with all equipment, including wetsuits, buoyancy aids, and instructors provided for free.

After the taster day, if they enjoy a particular activity, families can have follow up sessions to develop their skills and better their active participation. For water based activities the minimum age is six years old, but activities can be provided for younger ones.

The Plymouth Lifeboat crew have given their support to the project which is also working with Plymouth City Council’s Anti Tombstoning campaign.

The Stonehouse Neighbourhood Policing Team are also supporting the project by donning wetsuits and getting splashed by fellow kayakers!

The RNLI, Surf Life Saving GB, Nudge Community, Duke of Edinburgh students and volunteer students from PSCA are also backing the project and it is hoped that a legacy of active healthy salt-water-wet families will act as a catalyst for the hub

Families taking to the water with Making Waves project

The Fly the Flag for Devonport Campaign was launched in December last year to fight the threat of HMS Albion and HMS Bulwark being axed under defence cuts.

It also called for all eight of the new Type 26 frigates to be based in Devonport and lobbied against a reduction in the number of Royal Marines in the city.

Defence Secretary Gavin Williamson confirmed on October 8 that the new Type 26 frigates will be based in Devonport. The anti-submarine ‘global combat’ warships will enter service in the 2020s, replacing the Type 23 frigates.

He also announced at the end of September that HMS Albion and Bulwark would be retained.

Campaigning and lobbying on all these issues has been spearheaded by the Devonport Task Group, which comprises MPs, the leader and shadow leader of Plymouth City Council and senior representatives from the defence industry, dockyard trade unions, business community and education and skills sector.

Councillor Tudor Evans, leader of Plymouth City Council and chair of the Task Group, welcomed the news but said the city needs to keep pressure on the Government and MoD to ensure continued investment in the naval base and dockyard.

Councillor Evans said: “The news that our campaign to secure the baseporting of the Type 26s in Devonport has been successful is very welcome and we need to say a big thank you to all the people in Plymouth who supported it.

“We need to be vigilant in case there are creeping cuts elsewhere that could impact on Devonport. There is already speculation that two Type 23 frigates could be retired early, which could have an impact on the city.

“We also need to know what the plans for the Type 31 frigates are and to be reassured that there are no plans to reduce the numbers of Royal Marines. We also need to understand where the MoD are planning to locate in the city once they vacate Stonehouse barracks and what the plans are for this important site.

“Our work to support defence in Plymouth will continue in earnest.”

Shadow leader Ian Bowyer, who chaired the Task Group up until last May, said: “This is great news for Plymouth, for the Naval Base and Dockyard and for jobs and investment in the city. We have campaigned hard on these issues and this is the result we wanted.

“We fought for HMS Bulwark and HMS Albion and they’ve now been secured and we fought to bring all the Type 26s here, which we have now also secured. We now need to keep the pressure up to secure the Royal Marines in the city.”
