Funding boost for childcare The owner of Mama Bear’s – which has nurseries in Crownhill and Pennycross – says it will help parents return or remain in work and is encouraging parents to start making their plans now.

The government is rolling out a new childcare funding scheme in September meaning Plymouth parents will be eligible for double the amount of free childcare.

Families with children aged 3 and 4, as of August 31, can apply for 30 hours of free childcare per week in the scheme which is aimed at encouraging parents back to work. Parents with a combined average income of £240 or more per week and who each earn under £100,000 are eligible if their child is three by August 31.

The proposals are based on work carried out by LDA Design, who were commissioned by the council to work on the City Centre Masterplan.

Plymouth’s plan to begin the regeneration of the West End and create a link with the waterfront is getting into gear with the appointment of demolition contractors for the first phase of work.

It sets out a mixed use redevelopment with over 300 homes around the Colin Campbell location, with 25 per cent to starter homes.

There will be shops, cafes and studios and car parking as well as attractive public open space. It is envisaged that the new development would include four to six storey buildings, with the current car park transformed into a courtyard.

South West contractors Gilpin Demolition have been appointed to demolish three buildings at the corner of New George Street.

Work is due to begin shortly to prepare the way for the careful demolition of three properties, 109, 111 and 113.

Over the coming weeks, the company will be on-site to carry out more detailed surveys as well as strip out the buildings and set up the site in readiness for the main demolition.

Roads around the new neighbourhood would be completely redesigned, with barriers removed, crossings simplified and enlarged and major reengineering of the junction between Western Approach and Union Street The council is in discussions with funders and partners particularly those who able to support affordable homes.

Leader of Plymouth City Council Ian Bowyer said: “I’m delighted to get to this stage. We need a mixture of uses to ensure our city centre continues to be a great destination and a great place – both for residents, visitors, existing and new businesses and this marks the start of a new chapter for the city and the West End.

A number of spaces in the car park directly behind the buildings earmarked for demolition will be out of action while the operation is underway.

The company and the council will work closely together to make sure those most affected by the work are kept up to date with progress.

The regeneration proposal would completely change the face of this part of the city. Instead of a cluttered car park overlooked by dated low-rise 1960s shops, Colin Campbell Court could become a desirable place to live as well as shop and enjoy.

Gilpin were responsible for demolishing the 1970s Quality Hotel overlooking the Hoe last year and have been involved in a number of key demolitions in the city including the YMCA building at North Cross and the new coach station in the West End.

Plymouth school takes part in flagship health research event

Demolishing the properties will be the first phase of a long term plan to rejuvenate this part of the city and create a stronger, more direct link with the waterfront at Millbay.

Over 100 Plymouth students learned about patient and public involvement in clinical research at a flagship event hosted by the National Institute for Health Research.

Stoke Damerel Community College students, aged 14-17 years old, watched a film called, People are Messy, before discussing and voting on key themes and issues exploring the value of patient and public involvement in health research.

It was one of only 11 events of its kind being held across England by the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Clinical Research Network as part of International Clinical Trials Day. The global annual awareness raising day coincided with the anniversary of the achievement of Royal Navy office James Lind in 1747 when he trialled different treatments of sailors for scurvy and discovered that it a lack of Vitamin C responded best to citrus fruits like lemons and oranges.

Over 24,800 people took part in clinical research studies in 2016-17 in the South West Peninsula (Devon, Somerset, Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly) according to the NIHR Clinical Research Network for this region. Hundreds more volunteers shared their experience and skills to help with the design, set up, review and promotion of research studies.

Local Clinical Research Network event lead Wendy Shaw said: We were delighted when Stoke Damerel Community College agreed to partner with the National Institute for Health Research to hold this engagement event for young people.

“There are many aspects of our lives and that of our family and friends which have been informed and improved thanks to health research. We hope that the students who took part in this event learned more about the opportunities for them to get involved in research by sharing their views and experiences now and throughout their lives.”

Community College, said: “It was a real privilege for us to be chosen as one of only 11 schools in the UK and the only one in the South West to take part in the event.

“We have built good relationships with many healthcare providers and organisations across Plymouth and the South West through initiatives like our Dementia Project and the new medical and healthcare school Stoke Damerel is sponsoring, Scott College.”

Year 9 student Georgia Pine said: “It’s been really inspiring. The film was really interesting and I’ve learned lot today about what is involved in research like this.”

Describing the event as ‘eye opening’

fellow Year 9 Kiera Coath said: “It wasn’t what I was expecting – we found out so much about all aspects of research and how many different roles there are and how each is as important as the other. It’s been a really interesting day.”

The event also included an ‘I Am Research’ challenge where the students quizzed mystery guests who play a part in health research to find out what it is they do.

St Luke’s opens a new charity shop in Estover St Luke’s Hospice Plymouth has officially opened the doors of its’ new charity shop in Estover.

The new shop, which is located just below Asda at Estover, was officially opened today by members of the St Luke’s crisis team.

The building, which was a former Plymouth city council office, has been transformed into the latest shop for the charity, selling a selection of clothes, toys and goods.

The money raised from the sale of people’s donated goods will go directly on patient care in the local community, contributing to the £10 million it costs each year for the Plymouth based charity to deliver their care services.

This is the first opportunity that St Luke’s has had to open a shop in Estover, having cared for 183 patients in the Estover PL6 community over the last year. 152 of these patients were cared for at home by the St Luke’s at home team, who provide specialist care, advice and support to people with life-limiting illnesses by visiting them in their own homes.

Plymotion helps people get from A to B with a smaller environmental footprint, providing advice, training, skills and funding for smarter travel options for getting to work and school, easing congestion on Plymouth’s network, and improving air quality and health.

Plymotion includes sustainable travel grants of up to £5,000 for workplaces as well as free bicycle maintenance classes.

Residents will be given advice by travel advisors about the options available and given incentives to make more journeys on foot, by bike or by bus as part of a healthy lifestyle.

QUALITY BLINDS AT LOW PRICES

Tina Gilbert may not call herself a champion of human decency, but in our mind, she is one of those local heroes who does so much to bring a smile to people’s faces.

Pat Day, who was widowed five years ago explained that life felt so bleak she did not even want to leave her house. “Coming along to Tina’s knitting group has done more to help me feel better and get out of my shell than all the sessions of bereavement counselling I had after my husband’s death. Nobody can be sad when Tina is around.”

room was filled with laughter and the continual clicking of needles.

Tina runs the group from her wool shop, Top Drawer in Crownhill Village. While it started as a monthly activity four years ago, demand meant that it became fortnightly and has just started meeting every week to give beginners a chance to come along and learn.

“We have a purpose again,” explained Irene Ryan. “As children and grandchildren grow we can feel there is no one now to knit for. However, we use donated wool and knit for premature babies, the homeless charity Shekinah, for patients in Mount Gould, Shoe Box charities for vulnerable people overseas and to sell at the League of Friends Shop in Derriford.”

Anne Lavers is the crochet teacher despite having been registered blind for 12 years.

Anne, who can pick out colours but has no central vision, losing her sight overnight due to wet macular degeneration, explained, “I wanted to give something back.

You have to get on with it!”.

“We also have a raffle each week which collects money over the year that we splurge on both a Christmas and Summer Party when we all get dressed up and go out for the afternoon.”

Rose Kidd, a sprightly 83, is the knitting teacher, who also, along with others, makes cakes to bring along.

Hats, scarves and cardigans off to Tina for facilitating such a lovely group and bringing sunshine and joy into lives.

“We are a very friendly bunch,” she laughs. “We meet on a Thursday, starting after 9.30am.

But we have been known to be still chatting and creating together way into the afternoon.

Richard Marsh, director of Barefoot, the charity that runs SPACE Shot said: “The response to

our first appeal was fantastic. With ‘Support SPACE Shot,’ we hope to secure our weekly youth sessions to the end of the year. This will also give us the time to make applications, have negotiations and develop the fund-raising methods that we need to sustain SPACE Shot into the future.”

SPACE Shot, formerly Lottery-funded, has worked with nearly 300 young people on the Ernesettle estate since 2014. It has helped significantly lower anti-social behaviour, helped young people make friends, built their confidence, informed them about everything from healthy relationships to substance abuse and supported them through a wide range of challenging personal issues.

Over the past 12 months these have included: 24 involved in anti-social behaviour; 22 struggling with drug and alcohol issues; 18

Appeal to raise funds for Ernesettle youth project After the success of the ‘Save SPACE Shot’ campaign which prevented the closure of the Ernesettle youth group, young people and staff have launched the ‘Support SPACE Shot’ appeal on the Crowdfund Plymouth site.

Everyone involved is part-time.

Barefoot, the charity that runs SPACE Shot, is 20 years old this year. Barefoot has now been working in Ernesettle for five years and is based at the SPACE Centre. The charity is a founder member of the Plymouth Youth Network.

Steve takes on city centre role Steve Hughes has been appointed as the new chief executive of the Plymouth City Centre Company.

Steve, who lives in Cornwall, takes over the role at the beginning of August fresh from leading the Bournemouth Town Centre Business Improvement District to an overwhelming ‘yes’ vote to carry on its work for another five years.

During his time in Bournemouth Steve was instrumental in creating a new vision and five year business plan for the BID, developing a year round programme of events to drive footfall and working with partners on the town’s ambitious Christmas programme of activities.

During Steve’s time in charge, footfall in Bournemouth Town Centre increased by 12%, compared with a UK High Street average of -1.1%.

Steve has a wealth of business experience, mostly in the media and communications industry where he has worked as an editor and managing director.

He is also passionate about business development and the potential of BID companies acting as a catalyst for trading improvement in town and city centres. Before running the Bournemouth BID, Steve led a project in York to set up one of the UK’s biggest BIDS with almost 1,000 businesses.

Steve said: “I am delighted to be coming to Plymouth at such an exciting time. I have seen the investment that has taken place recently and what’s in the pipeline including, of course, the Mayflower 400 anniversary. Clearly the city has great potential and I am impressed with the ambition.

“I look forward to working with the City Centre Company Board and partners on the vision for Plymouth to be one of the UK’s top destinations and to place the city centre as the south west region’s prime retail location.”

Busy summer at Stoke church The congregation at Stoke Damerel will be kept busy from Saturday June 24, when the Summer Fair will take place between 11 am and 3pm.

This is a popular event and there is a good variety of stalls and plenty of refreshments available.

On July 1, Plymouth Gilbert and Sullivan Fellowship will be raising the roof with the Pirates of Penzance. The concert begins at 7.30 pm and tickets are £6 in advance or £8 on the door.

On July 22, there will be a Cello Concert between 4pm and 6pm with the Olga Ogomanic School of Music. This will be followed by a supper/dance at 7.30 pm with The Astorian Dance Band with Morag Thomson Findlay. Do come along and enjoy the summer fun!

He had his eye on the Glassblowing House after it went under in 2013 and finally managed to snap up the iconic building last year.

The Harbour’s menu includes a mouth-watering variety of dishes using freshly caught seafood, most of which was landed just yards away at Plymouth fish market in Sutton Harbour.

The restaurant, which employs 16 people, also includes an adjoining chip shop-style takeaway for those wanting to sample head chef Ovidiu Aneculaesei’s delights at home.

Bombshells celebration When the city is looking to promote itself far and wide in the run up to the Mayflower 2020 celebrations, it is encouraging to note that the small business spirit is already ahead of the game, writes Karen Pilkington.

Bombshells are the very first in the west of the city.

While Bombshells Hair & Beauty has not reached into the international arena just yet, it is already pulling in customers from Ivybridge, Tavistock and Liskeard., prepared to travel to Keyham for something that little bit special.

Hairdressing salons are visited annually and objectively assessed by professionally trained inspectors against a set of strict criteria in the same way as the well-known AA or RAC Hotel Guides.

Despite being open for just eight months, it’s coowner and manager, Jemima Holly was delighted to receive a 4-star rating last month from the Good Salon Guide.

Jemima explained that this is something that they are very proud of, given the fact they have been open for such little time. There are only three other salons listed in the guide in Plymouth, and

The Good Salon Guide is the only independent, nationwide scheme for assessing professional standards and services within the hairdressing and beauty industries. Listing around 2,000 national salons, it is the kitemark of quality for the public and hairdressing industry.

“The rating shows that our staff are true professionals, using only top-quality products, and are constantly updating their skills to achieve the highest standard,” said Jemima. “We only just missed a top 5-star rating, simply because we currently only have one wash station.”

“We actually established our salon and took time over its layout and decoration to move away from the mechanical, almost industrial vibe of other

salons, and create a homely, warm feeling instead.

So, we are extremely proud of what we have achieved, being able to offer top quality, industry recognised skill and attention to detail in a super friendly atmosphere where we celebrate differences and diversity.

“We are also super pleased to be located opposite HMS Drake, so much so that we offer discount to all service personnel and their families. We are really proud of the heritage of this part of Plymouth.”

Signpost 6 exhibition Talented art students from across Plymouth will be showcasing their work alongside professional artists in a public gallery.

Pioneered by the art department at Devonport High School for Girls the exhibition - which is called Signpost 6: A String of Theories – is now in its ninth year.

The exhibition will take place at the Cube 3 Gallery at Plymouth University between July 10 and August 4. It is open from Monday to Friday from 10am to 5pm.

Over the last nine years Devonport High School for Girls has developed partnerships with contemporary local professional artists, curating exhibitions which explore innovations in the local art scene, together

with work produced by the school’s students.

Signpost 6 is the seventh exhibition organised in conjunction with Peninsula Arts at Plymouth University and looks at the processes involved in creative thinkers applying a diverse range of media while moving from theme or idea to another.

Alan Thomas, deputy head at Devonport High School for Girls said: “Whether we meditate, sketch, go on long journeys or take short walks or collaborate and make links to our art with the community, we are inspired by different things and motivated in different ways.

“Signpost 6 - A String of Theories is curated exhibition by the students, to celebrate and share the visual experiences through their work.”

Clothes for Uganda A local business has pulled out all the stops making clothes for a community in Uganda in a ‘speed-sew’ event.

Make at 140 Vauxhall St teamed up with local fundraiser, Lynette Marshall, and local volunteers to make 50 outfits for children in one of the poorest regions of East Africa.

Every year, Lynette of St Paul’s Church, Efford, makes a self-funded trip to Africa with aid donated by Plymouth residents. Inspired by the ‘pillowcase dress’ idea – which very simply turns unwanted pillow cases into comfortable and durable clothing for young children – Lynette found a natural partner in Make at 140 Vauxhall St who hosted the event.

Make has been open since Nov 2015, building up a community of sewing enthusiasts and makers. They are calling upon anyone – whether sewers or not - to get involved and help Lynette with her visit this year. College Road Primary to host community music festival College Road Primary School will host a community music festival at the school site on College Road which will be open to everyone to attend on Wednesday July 12.

The local community are invited to participate in and enjoy a variety of music throughout the afternoon from workshops to performances. The workshops will be run by outside professionals, including Gamelan (traditional Indonesian music), break dancing, Taiko Drumming and much more!

As well as this the children from College Road will be performing throughout the day within their classes and as a whole school. Several secondary schools will also be taking part to show case their talent, including a live performances from Stoke Damerel Community College bands and a performance from the famous Military Wives Choir! Professional musicians will attend and perform on the day too.

Food and drinks will be available to purchase, chosen and prepared by the children with the support from CaterED. The day itself has been arranged by local children from College Road Primary with each class responsible for a specific part of the day. We hope it will be a tremendous success and provide enjoyment throughout the community!

Women in STEM Plymouth (WISP) hold their next networking event on July 5 at Rittal-CSM, Plymouth, between 4.30pm and 7.15pm.

The event brings together those (both men and women) who have a passion for STEM subjects to network and be inspired by a behind the scenes tour of Rittal-CSM. Rittal are the world’s leading systems provider for enclosures, power distribution, climate control, IT infrastructure, software and services. Rittal work for companies including Facebook, HP and Royal Bank of Scotland to name a few.

This free event, open to all, will enable guests to hear about the work of Rittal-CSM as well as listen to keynote speaker Gina Small, principal transport planning officer at Devon County Council. Gina will be talking about how STEM disciplines are applied throughout every phase of infrastructure projects, most notably in the recent Deep Lane roadway improvements.

Tamar View hosts Blue Light Day This year was the sixth Plymouth Blue Light Day, a safety and information day run with the emergency services and partners, marking the start of national Learning Disability Week in the city.

The theme for 2017 was ‘Your health, safety and wellbeing’ and saw over 36 different organisations taking part including the British Red Cross, Derriford Hospital, Active for All, the Stroke Association, Taxi Licensing, British Transport Police, Thrive Plymouth and Warm and Well.

Jill Singh, Self Advocacy Project Officer of Plymouth People First and organiser of the event said: “The day is an amazing example of what can happen when you have strong and effective partnerships in place.

“I am incredibly grateful to the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner for sponsoring the day, Pat Patel and the team at the Tamar View Community Centre for hosting the event, Colin Olver from the Co-op who donated 350 bottles of water and pieces of fruit for the attendees and to Aaron Monk from Diverse Events who worked with Saltash May Fair to lend us several gazebos and a marquee free of charge.

“The Blue Light Day allows people with learning disabilities to access important information in a fun and safe environment. By contributing to the event organisations are more aware of the needs of the Learning Disability Community and can make reasonable adjustments to their service to make their provision more inclusive.”

Ince Castle support for Tamar View surgery appeal Fire appliances old and new were on display at the event

Ince Castle near Saltash is opening its spectacular gardens to the public in July - with proceeds from the event going towards the Tamar View Community Complex fund for a new GP surgery and pharmacy.

The gardens, which have been planted since 1960, are open from 2pm to 5pm on Sunday July 16. Visitors can picnic in the car park from 1pm with lovely views of the River Tamar. Admission is £4 for adults, children free. Home made teas will be available and dogs on leads are welcome.

Tamar View Community Centre manager Pat Patel said: “We are very grateful to Lady Alice Boyd of Ince Castle, our Patron, for allowing us to raise funds by opening the grounds of her home to raise funds to help us with our next project to build a GP surgery and pharmacy next to the Tamar View Community Centre.

“We are also very grateful to the ladies of the Saltash WI for helping us with catering.

Some of our youth team ambassadors will also help on the day,” he added. “We are sure families will enjoy the rare opportunity to view the magnificent gardens with river views and encourage people to take picnics if they wish.”

Let’s all party in the park this summer The recent Great Get Together campaign run by the Jo Cox Foundation highlighted the need to come together, as well as the enjoyment we share in each other’s company.

Over 230 events were held nationally ranging from picnics in the park to jamborees and discussion events.

We have a proud tradition in Plymouth of getting out and enjoying ourselves, even in the most difficult of circumstances, and whilst we may not be dancing on the Hoe in the middle of the atrocities the city suffered in World War Two, we are partying in the park in abundance this July.

Many of the local councillors and newly elected MP, Luke Pollard will be going along to support the events, which are designed especially for local people to enjoy themselves without having to spend a fortune.

So, get out your glad rags; haul the children away from their screens (or at very least take them and their phone along); get everyone into the fresh air, and enjoy a feast of Summer Fairs just around the corner.

It’s a great opportunity to see what’s going on in the area, perhaps bump into old friends, have a cup of tea and a sit down in pleasant company where everyone is welcome.

Keyham’s Eco dream is now a reality with opening of The Keep College Road Primary School marked the occasion of an official opening for its new Eco learning space - known as ‘The KEEP’ – on June 9.

Make a difference for Mayflower 400 The Make a Difference for Mayflower 400 project is supporting employee volunteers to make a difference in the community.

Businesses are giving their staff time to volunteer to clean, clear and tidy up Plymouth streets and green spaces.

Improving Lives Plymouth has been meeting resident groups to create Make a Difference Days where employee volunteers will give their time to support

The children of College Road have been at the forefront of the project from the designs, to the building name The KEEP!

A special speech was made by the current outgoing Year 6 councillors Sam Blom and Mia Stocks who were involved with the community project from the beginning.

The school began planning the project back in 2014 when Headteacher Jim Wallace wanted to create an Eco community building on the edge of the school’s grounds for everyone to use to help shape a stronger, better, restored community.

The aim of the project was to provide a space

away from the small over-crowded school to work with charities, community groups and associations. The school worked hard to raise the funds towards the building and were successful in receiving a grant from Garfield Weston towards the project. The school PTA have also actively fundraised to help support the school achieve these goals.

The space will be widely used for a broad range of activities and will be available for community use in the evening, at weekends and during the school holidays.

Jim Wallace said: “We look forward to serving our community and educating our children in exciting ways, developing them as individuals and giving them the tools for success in their lives, always remembering our school motto ‘Learning is Fun!’”

Make a Difference Days are being planned to paint St Levan Park railings and Stoke STaRs have a wish list for Blockhouse Park. Other volunteering is taking place at Forder Valley, Tothill Park and Central Park.

The timber framed building was built in just nine weeks, all from sustainable sources, cedar clad, sedum roof, solar panels and a water recycling facility achieving the aim of making the building as Eco friendly as possible.

Local community groups and members of the public were invited to attend the ribbon cutting ceremony organised by children from the School Council and were given the opportunity to have a look around the new ‘Eco’ community building.

Finding Fanon exhibition premiere at Arts Centre Plymouth Arts Centre will be hosting the exhibition premiere of Larry Achiampong and David Blandy’s film trilogy Finding Fanon from July 6 to September 2.

The film trilogy is a moving exploration or race, identity and globalisation inspired by the radical thinker Frantz Fanon, who died in 1961. It considers Fanon’s ideas about the mental distress caused by colonialism and the ways race, racism and societal issues affect relationships.

The exhibition includes pieces by each artist from their individual practices and will be previewed on July 6 between 6pm and 8pm when David Blandy and Larry Achiampong will be in conversation with Ben Borthwick, artistic director of Plymouth Arts Centre.

David Blandy’s short film Tutorial will be screened before the cinema screenings of Inversion and My Cousin Rachel for the first week of the exhibition from Friday July 7 to 13.

Larry Achiampong is a British-Ghanaian artist who has exhibited and presented projects in the UK and abroad.

Mad Hatters Family Fun Day in aid of Veterans with Dogs The Plymouth Junior Lawyers Division (PJLD) are a young group of lawyers, arranging events in Plymouth both for social and networking opportunities, but also charity events. This year, the group is raising money for its charity of the year, Veterans with Dogs.

Veterans with Dogs are a local Armed Forces charity, providing assistance dogs for Veterans with PTSD and associated mental health disorders. This year, the committee are aiming to put one puppy through his first year of training, and are currently looking for puppy socialisers to bring him up until he is placed with a Veterans at around 12 months.

As part of the fundraising last year, they launched the first Family Fun Day, a Mad Hatters Tea Party at Plymouth Albion. It was a huge success, seeing around 1500

people through the gates and 40,000 views on various media platforms. There were stalls, face painters, bouncy castles, Mad Hatter Games and a tea party and the circus even came to town!

This year, the group is launching a bigger and better trip down the rabbit hole, with the second Mad Hatters Family Fun Day. It is set to take place on Sunday July 9 at Boringdon Park Golf Club. A musical celebration in Devonport Park Recent years have seen Devonport Park go through a remarkable renaissance. No longer a drab relic of the past, but very much a vibrant meeting place for all of the community.

Affectionately dubbed the ‘People’s Park’, much of its current popularity is down to the efforts of local residents.

One such person is Priscilla Carroll who has been a park volunteer with various groups since 2007.

Her current group The Real Friends Social Group of Devonport Park organised June’s Music Festival to celebrate five years of the Victorian style bandstand which was funded in part by the Heritage Lottery Fund.

This was not the first event that Priscilla’s group have organised at the park. In fact the line up offered something for everyone, much like last summer’s event.

Funds were raised for the Children’s Hospice SW and apart from the performances there was face painting, cakes and a bouncy castle.

Montpelier Primary School Steel Pan band and Old TownTwelves Morris dancers opened the event and the Plymouth Youth Concert Band, which actually included musicians of all ages, had a repertoire of everything from Abba to Michael Jackson.

Some of the audience joined in with the bandleader to dance to Thriller. Later Talitha was introduced as a solo act who had been singing for the Real Friends for many years. A strong voice for her age she started her performance with some Adele and later included Leonard Cohen’s popular Hallelujah.

Later the Blasé Blues Band and MBC Harmony entertained at the Park Pavilion Cafe, who sponsored the event. Priscilla said: “A big thank you to all the musicians who made this event possible. Our thoughts are with London and Manchester at this time and we believe that music can be a great asset in uniting communities.”

Behind the Scenes Aquarium VIP tours Visitors to the National Marine Aquarium will now be able to get an exclusive glimpse of what goes on beyond its tanks, with the launch of VIP Behind the Scenes tours.

Providing an opportunity to discover un-disclosed areas, the VIP tours will allow visitors to find out what a day in the life of the Aquarium is really like, and learn how the Aquarium’s world class husbandry and engineering teams care for more than 4,000 marine animals.

From sharks and stingrays, to jellyfish and Friday the Green Turtle, tour-goers will see how the teams keep all the species happy and healthy.

The tours will also give visitors the opportunity to learn about the animals’ food preparation, how the Aquarium keeps the tank water clean and what daily tasks are involved in the life of a biologist, plus much more.

Fun day launch for city Refugee Week Glorious sunshine meant that the Family Fun Day held at Brickfields recently to officially launch Refugee Week in Plymouth was a rip roaring success.

Plymouth Hope Festival also included a full day of six a side football, with competitions for U10, U12, U16 and U18s, as well as a ladies and mens won by Pebbles.

The day was supported and funded by a wide range of local organisations, including Plymouth City Council, Plymouth Community Homes, dch, Plymouth University, Plymouth Trophyman and the Devon FA. This meant that the entertainment was free of charge – to the delight of parents and their children.

Other partners were the British Red Cross, who were giving instruction on how to save a life; Plymouth Scrap Store, whose Junk Percussion run by Big Beat kept

the festival animated with drum beats throughout; and Devon and Cornwall Police who’s Diverse Communities Team were making lifelong friends by drawing names out of a hat to win footballs.

START, students and refugees working together were another key sponsor of the day, celebrating the fact that this year they were awarded The European Citizen’s Prize. START were also featured recently on Radio 4’s walking programme, as they have taken 100 refugees to explore the local countryside through the STARTwalking project.

Plymouth popsicles company joining forces with Mitch Tonks’ Rockfish group

Plymouth based ice lolly company OllyLolly is to join forces with the Mitch Tonks group of restaurants, Rockfish, to form part of the eatery’s newly refreshed children’s summer menu.

“We are developing fantastic relationships with local companies who really want to invest in natural but fun and delicious products” says Mel Mackie “we also produce bespoke flavours for special events, including more adult offerings, such as Mojito or Gin & Lime lollies.

We’ve seen a big upsurge in the appetite for unusual flavours and enjoy producing these upon request”

Rockfish, which currently has five Westcountry based restaurants, including a recently refurbished Plymouth eatery, is launching a new menu for children that will feature three flavours of the handmade OllyLolly frozen fruit lollies.

The lollies, which are made entirely from fresh products and go by the names of Miss Mango, Blues Berry Lemonade and Watermelon Quencher are set to be a summer success at the popular venue.

Rockfish’s Group head chef Kirk Gosden says of the collaboration: “At Rockfish we love OllyLolly on our children’s menu.

This allows us to offer a fresh fruit option for dessert in a fun funky label, which is full of goodness and most importantly a local product”.

OllyLolly, who are based at Royal William Yard in Plymouth, were inspired to recreate the retro frozen ice treats for retail in April 2015, after an early

heatwave highlighted the gap in choice for healthy ice lollies. Founders Mel and Ollie Mackie devised their own natural, fresh fruit popsicles shortly after, initially for their three young children who gave Ollylollies their resounding seal of approval.

“All our lollies are handmade, using only fresh fruit, a splash of water and a sprinkling of unrefined natural cane sugar,

Four libraries reprieved but six are still to close Four libraries which faced the axe under Plymouth City Council proposals have been reprieved following local protests and campaigns.

The council’s ‘Plan for Libraries’ proposed closure of 10 libraries - but after receiving the views of thousands of local residents four Efford, Estover, North Prospect and Peverell – will now remain open.

“Our original plan set out a very clear vision that Plymouth libraries will deliver modern services that inspire learning and creativity, improve health and wellbeing, and support digital inclusion. This plan will make this happen.

However, Stoke, Eggbuckland, Ernesettle, Laira, Tothill and West Park libraries will close later this year. Seven libraries which were retained under the original plan were Central, Crownhill, Devonport, Plympton, Plymstock, St Budeaux and Southway.

Following a comprehensive consultation, the new plan was presented to the Council’s Cabinet on June 20. The new plan sets out how it will meet the ongoing and future challenges the service faces by: • Investing over £250,000 in modernising the service, including redeveloping the St Budeaux site • Providing an outreach service in areas where a library is closing, which will also cover areas of the city that had no library provision before, such as Whitleigh • Enhancing the online service Council Leader Ian Bowyer said: “We have said all along that libraries are about more than just books and that the service should not be constrained by buildings that are no longer being visited in the way they were before the internet and the digital revolution.

“While other councils have responded to this change by closing libraries down on a

Over a period of 12 weeks the council carried out a comprehensive consultation with over 3,700 responses to the original Plan for Libraries proposals. Over 150 stakeholders including primary, secondary and other educational providers were contacted to encourage them to take part in the consultation; over 370 people were spoken to at 20 public sessions.

The council also received 183 letters, 61 emails, 51 comments on social media and 2,317 signatures on six petitions. The changes proposed will lessen the original impact on active users from 20 per cent to just over six per cent. The council has always maintained that if people cannot access an alternative library, the service would look to be more flexible and work with the communities to provide activities.

The Plan for Libraries describes activities for the next three years and the steps the Council will take to continue with its vision. Despite significant financial constraints, the plan commits to invest in the future of the library

Royal Marines complete 100 challenges in 100 days for charity

Statistics show that just seven of 17 libraries currently account for 80 per cent of all library visits and 75 per cent of all items borrowed.

Assistant director of customer services Faye Batchelor-Hambleton said: “Operating 17 libraries across the city is unsustainable and limits our ability to offer the high quality of service we want for Plymouth’s residents.

“We must not be constrained by a building; we want to use our resources better and take our services into the community. We want to reach new audiences who don’t currently use libraries but could benefit from what we offer.

“We will always be about books and reading and customers expect us to offer our service in a way they prefer, whether printed books, eBooks or audio-books. Requesting a book and being able to collect it at a new local ‘click and collect’ location will be more convenient for our customers.

“More eBooks are borrowed each year than printed books from 10 of our libraries so we will enhance our 24/7 online service for those embracing the digital world.

“Just as importantly we’re here to help those who lack IT skills or have no internet access as home.

Royal Marines from 42 Commando have completed a 16.64 mile-aday relay challenge over six days by handing the baton to Royal Marines Band colleagues.

The hand-over event happened on Plymouth Hoe with colleagues from the HM Band of the Royal Marines giving them musical encouragement.

The march is part of the 1664 Challenge, an annual event which marks the 353rd anniversary of the Royal Marines.

Changes in circumstances, such as the birth of a child, losing a job, a family bereavement, becoming a carer, or having an illness, can often change people’s entitlements so it’s important that people are aware of the support available.

The benefits system is complex, and people don’t always know what they can apply for or how to go about it. Our advisors can undertake benefit checks to

Play your part, act on scams Every year millions of people in the UK fall prey to scammers; nationally it is estimated that scams victims in the UK lose about £10.9 billion every year.

In recent years, scam tactics have become highly sophisticated, often using social engineering to tackle their prey. Scams can target anyone. Citizens Advice information shows that victims to a scam or fraud are more likely to be aged 65+, but there has been a rapid increase in the number of under-25s hit by scams. In 2016, Citizens Advice Plymouth helped 39 people with scam and fraud issues.

Throughout July, Citizens Advice Plymouth will organise activities across the city to give people some top tips on how to avoid scams. • Pension scams usually promise to convert pension benefits into cash before age 55.

• Investment scams offer fictitious investments via phone call, mail or social media. Frequently scammers offer investments in wine, shares, rare earth minerals and land investments overseas.

• Subscription traps or free trial scams usually tackle women aged 50-64 offering them health and beautyrelated products such as slimming pills or face/skin creams.

• Job scammer can be varied e.g. take money to write CVs, carry out security and police checks or sometimes offer expensive training or a job that doesn’t exist.

• Computer scams might report a problem with computer, such as a virus, which can be fixed for a fee.

• Ticket scams tackle consumers eager to buy tickets from a website for the event, which is already sold out or the tickets haven’t yet gone on sale.

• Lottery/prize draw scams offer fake ‘prizes’ of tickets for major sporting events or for non-existent lotteries abroad.

• Council tax re-banding scammers can cold call using the name of your local council and offer a rebate for council tax over-payment – for a fee.

• Locksmith scammer pretends to be a neighbour who is locked out and asks for money to pay a locksmith.

It is usually a case of urgency when a child is alone in the premises.

• Vishing (a phone) and phishing (e.g. harmful link in an email) are scams where scammers impersonate someone from a bank, the police or other legitimate organisation such as a telephone or internet provider.

They usually manipulate people into providing sensitive data or transferring money or passing on financial/ personal details.

• Smishing – text messages used to lure people onto scams websites or inviting them to call premium rate numbers or download malicious content.

• Pyramid selling – people are told they can earn money by recruiting new members to a money-making venture.

With the Mayflower 400 celebrations little more than three years away, Plymouth and its international partners have marked the 60th anniversary of the Mayflower II sailing and arriving in America.

A symbol of Anglo-American bonds forged during World War II, the iconic replica ship sailed from the UK to the USA, arriving in Plymouth, Massachusetts on June 13, 1957.

Built in England and now owned by Plimoth Plantation in Massachusetts, the Mayflower II was sailed across the Atlantic by an adventurous crew.

The ship was a gift from the people of England to the people of the United States in gratitude for assistance during World War II. As such, she is an iconic symbol of freedom and a living memorial to the American men and women who fought alongside British troops.

Charles Hackett, chief executive of Mayflower 400 said: “Mayflower 400 will be a transformational programme of events and an international commemoration.

“This anniversary of the sailing of the Mayflower II replica marks one of the many milestones that solidify the important relationship between the UK and the USA.

Among the people who welcomed the ship’s arrival were then-Senator John F. Kennedy and Vice President Richard Nixon. Major national media, including National Geographic and Life Magazine, covered the historic event.

Today, five members survive of the original 33-person crew – Englishmen Peter Padfield, Adrian Small, and David Thorpe, Australian John Winslow, and American Joseph Meany.

These courageous men and their now-departed colleagues were led in their transatlantic endeavor by Alan Villiers, a well-known and highly regarded captain of square-rigged ships. A local debt counselling charity, for which I work voluntarily one day per week, is offering tips to parents on how to keep their children entertained for less during the summer break.

Council wins top award as employer for school leavers Plymouth City Council has won the award for top Public Sector employer for school leavers in the UK. The council was placed in the top 20 overall for the national award, alongside organisations such as BP, Virgin Media, Superdrug, Barclays and Bentley.

These awards are decided by the opinions of school leavers and apprentice trainees across the UK who have completed surveys analysing everything about their employers and training programmes, from skills development, career progression and training to company culture.

Council Leader Ian Bowyer said: “We are fully

committed to ensuring our young people have the opportunity to learn and develop their skills with Plymouth City Council. I am so pleased that our apprentices are having a great employer experience with us.

“Our learning and development team have worked extremely hard to develop an apprenticeship programme which provides learners the opportunity to develop their careers.”

Over the last five years the council has developed a successful and award winning apprenticeship programme, which has supported over 230 young people into employment.

Chief executive Tracey Lee said: “We have a culture of growing our own talent by introducing new staff and skills to support the organisation which in turn helps us provide a better service for our residents. We know that our people are one of our most important assets and we are fully committed to creating even more opportunities to attract, develop and retain talent across the Council and we are proud to be leading the way.”

The council also made the 2017 Large Apprenticeship Employer of the Year Award at the National Apprenticeship awards earlier this year and has been named as a top 100 UK Employer for Apprentices for the third time.

Dental student Jack to work in Peru in summer

are suffering from the long-term effects of dental pain.

Jack Slaymaker, (above) a third year student from Plymouth University Peninsula School of Dentistry, is to travel to Peru over the summer to contribute to dental care there.

Jack has already raised more than the £1500 needed for the trip, which he did with a Crowdfunding campaign in under two weeks.

Jack will work in the local hospital in Arequipa where he will provide free, much needed and sometimes vital dental treatment to disadvantaged children and adults.

“I think it is a fantastic opportunity to provide care for people who might not be able to afford to have this otherwise,” said Jack. “To be able to help someone out of pain and bring them confidence and, of course, a smile is a truly rewarding experience. I now have the chance to use the dental skills I’ve learned to provide dental treatment to people who have not had access to it.”

He added: “I’m so grateful to everyone who has supported my trip. The cost is high, but the money goes to support the local hospitals in Arequipa, as well as my placement there. This will ensure that they can carry on helping those who need care the most.”

Experience

Finding light and life in the darkness I was recently overwhelmed by a World War Two film called Hacksaw Ridge.

It is a true story and I won’t spoil it for those who haven’t seen it, but it is about faith, personal conviction, personal conscience and a massive amount of personal courage. It is also graphic when it comes to the portrayal of the realities of war.

Ian Pilkington wrote about his experience with this film back in the March edition of the Shopper, and this is my personal take on its core messages: It is the values of the back story around this film, which really impacted me. It seems that regardless of our family and social relationships life is often an experience that we do alone. Not discounting the great support and comfort that we give each other, there are moments when it is just us against the realities of life.

I have a saying, from my life as a Christian,

which is: “we all live our lives to the audience of one.” What this means is that our conscience is a very precious part of our humanity and for people of faith, submitted to a higher power in Jesus Christ, it is a liberating experience to believe and trust that a loving God sees all.

This freedom seems to require right life choices made from our free will, accountable to our higher power.

Of course, the principle is often a very messy process because we’re not robots and this is why the attribute of forgiveness is important, as we ‘do life’ with God and each other. As we’re accountable to a loving God, we automatically become more accountable and helpful to each other.

However, there is always some hope in the midst of adversity. At the heart of that statement is the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ on the cross. It wasn’t a walk in the park for Him. The reality of the cross, however, truly deals with the internal realities that are going on within us all as we all journey through life.

The pain we experience in challenging times and the emotional turmoil we all go through can be brought to rest through a life aligned to Him.

This is the good news of the Christian faith along with the hope of eternal life, which is the knowledge and experience of a heavenly Father who loves us unconditionally. The world is developing as God’s word predicted. There is often a resurrection out of dire circumstances, as testified by many Christians who practice their faith in countries where they are persecuted for it.

Sometimes, especially in the church in the West, we may often not be thankful for these moments because we need the spiritual eyes to see the process.

Only Christ can give sight to the blind, spiritually.

Of course I appreciate that what I’m saying is not transferrable, or even acceptable, just because I’ve said it or you’re reading this; but I do know that Jesus Christ is able to make His presence and reality real to every person who seeks Him when they seek Him with all their hearts.

If present circumstances are undermining your perseverance and hope, seeing Hacksaw Ridge may be a life changing experience, or at least it could help you on your journey of life.

Seven editions reaching 64,000 homes

Key milestone as £22.6 million History Centre contract is signed A major milestone for the Plymouth History Centre has been reached with the signing of a £22.6 million contract with construction and regeneration specialist Willmott Dixon.

The signing of the contract marks a new phase for the project and means that major construction work can now progress.

“This amazing new building will showcase both heritage and the visual arts whilst providing a landmark attraction for the city.

Willmott Dixon has already completed the enabling works for the History Centre, a task which has involved soft stripping the existing buildings, installing an extensive scaffolding scheme and demolishing some small outbuildings.

“Our Plymouth team has made an established start and we are looking forward to this next phase of construction, whilst continuing to provide great training and employment opportunities for local people.”

John Boughton, deputy managing director, Willmott Dixon said: “The Plymouth History Centre is a critical next-step in Willmott Dixon’s growth in the region, forging stronger relationships with the local supply chain and demonstrating our ability to deliver prestigious projects.

Members of the public can see the progress that’s being made at the History Centre site over the coming months thanks to a series of hard hat tours.

The non-listed post-war extension to the rear of the former Central Library has also been demolished.
