300 staff to be recruited for call centre

City given New Year jobs boost Plymouth has received a huge New Year employment boost with the creation of 300 jobs in January and February.

Global outsourcing experts Sitel will be taking on the additional staff for their wellestablished call centre operation in Plymouth.

Sitel is one of the big employers in the South West and already employs 500 staff at its site in the iconic ‘Ship’ building at Derriford Business Park, which opened in 2017.

Sitel works with well-known brands to deliver industry-leading customer experience solutions.

Agreement brokered by council leader and local MP for repairs to Sutton Harbour Footbridge local businesses.

An agreement has been brokered between Plymouth City Council, the Environment Agency and Sutton Harbour Holdings plc for repairs to enable the Sutton Harbour pedestrian footbridge to re-open.

But this is likely to take until next summer at the earliest.

Leader of the Council, Councillor Ian Bowyer and MP for Plymouth Sutton and Devonport Luke Pollard brokered the agreement between Sutton Harbour Holdings plc and the Environment Agency to repair the custom-built footbridge, which connects the Barbican Quarter with the Fishing Quarter of Sutton Harbour where the National Marine Aquarium and Rockfish restaurant are based.

The footbridge has been closed since the spring following a failure of the bridge turntable. Under an agreement dating back to 1998, the management and maintenance responsibilities for the lock gates and the footbridge are shared between the Environment Agency and Sutton Harbour Holdings plc.

The bridge crosses Sutton Lock, and is an integral part of the lock gate system, which is designed to act as a vital flood defence measure, protecting homes and businesses in Sutton Harbour, Barbican, Coxside, Bretonside and surrounding areas from high tides.

Engineering reports commissioned by the Environment Agency earlier this year following the breakdown found the bearing in the bridge turntable had failed, and new parts will need to be manufactured in order to repair the mechanism.

Plymouth City Council convened a special meeting to find a solution to the issue of bringing the bridge back into use as a key pedestrian link, and agree a timetable for work to take place. The council has offered to act as an intermediary to commission work to repair the bridge.

Plymouth Waterfront Partnership has also offered support.

“The broken footbridge has been a concern for many months and I am pleased that we have been able to find a way forward for its repair.

“We appreciate it could be a complex repair and there are longer term issues to be addressed, but we needed to push on with a resolution for the city, for the local businesses and for the people who use this great route to and from the city centre and the historic Barbican Quarter.

“We will be working with both parties to avoid this situation happening again. This is not the end of the process but it is certainly a huge step in the right direction.”

The council will now begin a process to commission repairs to the existing footbridge. The scale and timescales for the repairs is not yet known as the work has to be scoped in detail and tendered although it is hoped that it will be completed next summer.

Alistair honoured for championing cause of energy conservation These are saving host schools and organisations around £90,000 per year and generating enough energy to power 2000 homes annually.

Plymouth Energy Community’s chief executive Alistair Macpherson, has been crowned South West Energy Champion at this year’s Green Energy Awards.

“I accept this award with a huge sense of pride” said Alistair, “Here in Plymouth, we continue to prove that local authorities and community energy organisations can partner an unstoppable force for good in the battle for a fairer and cleaner energy system. I am massively grateful for the opportunity to do the work that I do and for the support of PEC’s fantastic staff team of advisors, its volunteer Directors and of Plymouth City Council.”

Alistair, who is also Plymouth City Council’s low carbon team leader, has led the internationally acclaimed community benefit society since 2013.

It started as a council initiative and has developed into a big-thinking venture pushing for better service for vulnerable customers and developing community owned renewables.

Over 13,000 households have saved in excess of £630,000 thanks to PEC’s Energy Team, who provide a holistic approach to tackling bills, fuel debt, insulation, heating, damp and mould.

Arrangements for Christmas and New Year bin collections Christmas and New Year holidays are just around the corner and Plymouth City Council wants to make sure you know what day your bin collections are, and what you can do with all that Christmas packaging!

As part of Plymouth’s ongoing recycling campaign, the council wants to make sure that local people know what they need to do when.

Councillor Mike Leaves, Cabinet Member for Street Scene and the Environment, said: “Christmas is a time of giving – it is also a time when you can sometimes get more packaging than you know what to do with!

“It’s important that people know what days their bin collections will be over the festive period and also what goes in each bin.

“We’re dreaming of a green Christmas, and don’t forget that a lot of your Christmas packaging can be recycled.

Most cardboard, paper and plastic items can be recycled, so it’s important that you know what you can put in your green bins or bags and also what needs to go in the brown bin.”

Because this year Christmas Day is a Monday and Boxing Day is a Tuesday, this means that your bin collections will be two days later than usual during Christmas week.

New Year’s Day is on a Monday, which means that your bin collection day will be one day later than usual during the first week of January.

Bin collections will then be back to normal during the second week of January (week commencing January 8).

Recycling information: Wrapping paper: you can recycle standard wrapping paper in your green bin, but not foil, glitter or shiny wrapping paper. Also, please remove anything such as bows, labels, string and ribbon, as well as sticky tape.

Plastics: you can recycle hard plastic packaging from toys and other goods, along with other items such as plastic shampoo and shower gel bottles from toiletry sets in your green bin. However, you can’t recycle softer plastics such as plastic bags, polystyrene and plastic film.

Cardboard: most types of card can be recycled including your Christmas cards, cardboard packaging for toys and other gifts, and cardboard egg boxes.

Polystyrene packaging: this cannot be recycled at home so you will need to put it in your brown bin or take it to one of our recycling centres.

Christmas trees: following the success of last year’s trial scheme, wood-chipping machines will be on a mini tour of Plymouth to dispose of Christmas trees responsibly. It’s a Wrap!

‘It’s a Wrap’ is a chance for parents to wrap their child’s presents in secret and for their children to do the same in a fun way.

Organised bv the Playwriters Production Company the event is taking place in the Playwriters mini-theatre above The Noah’s Ark pub in Courtney Street off Royal Parade, Plymouth. It will be on December 22 between 1pm and 4pm and all are welcome.

Take your own wrapping paper and sellotape, string, scissors and supervision will be supplied. Wrapping fun things like tree baubles and candy canes to take home as presents, putting a small present in a big box with packing, and more. Any spare wrapping paper gratefully received on the day.

A group of women who regularly get together to practice their knitting and crochet are continuing their generous ways by producing teddies for a really unique charity.

Despite the fact that its building is currently closed for the development of The Box, Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery’s Traditional Craft Group continues to meet each week to improve their skills and share ideas.

The women often produce work for charities. Their most recent project has seen them create knitted teddies for Mercy Ships - the world’s largest floating hospital.

Around two thirds of the world’s population are unable to get safe affordable surgery when they need it, turning treatable illnesses into life-threatening conditions. Mercy Ships, which is almost entirely staffed by volunteers, provides free and vital medical care to some of our poorest countries and has five state-of-the art operating theatres.

Thanks to the Traditional Craft Group, 75 children who have an operation on board the ship over the next few weeks will be given a teddy.

“The group really enjoy their sessions, which are open to novices as well as experienced knitters,” said Mark Tosdevin, programmes manager for Plymouth Museums Galleries Archives. “It’s great that they regularly give back - not just to local communities but also to charities much further afield.”

Over the last few months the group has produced knitted goods for Trevi House and Derriford Hospital, hats for the soup kitchen, local homeless people and a Sikh temple in Bristol.

They’ve also made knitted squares for the mums and babies in the Neonatal Unit at the Royal Cornwall Hospital, twiddle muffs and blankets for Mount Gould Hospital’s Dementia Unit and raffle prizes for local cancer charities and shoebox appeals.

Charities supporting refugees in Greece, Romania and Albania have also received items from them.

If you’re interested in getting involved, the group meets at Plymouth Guildhall from 10am to 12pm each Friday.

There’s no need to book and just a £1 donation to pay per session.

Plymouth doctor is named as GP trainee of the year A doctor with a passion for helping young people gain vital access to services has been named GP Trainee of the Year at the General Practice Awards 2017.

Dr Pippa Le Page, GP Education Fellow in the Plymouth University Peninsula Schools of Medicine and Dentistry (PUPSMD), was nominated by her supervisors at Beacon Medical Group for her outstanding commitment to helping young people access the help and advice they need, in particular regard to mental health and sexual health.

She picked up the prize at Royal Lancaster, London alongside other category winners from all over the UK. Working alongside Professor Richard Byng, Professor in Primary Care Research and Deputy Director of the National Institute for Health Research Collaboration for Leadership in Applied Health Research and Care South West Peninsula (PenCLAHRC), Dr Le Page delivers teaching sessions on the University’s undergraduate medical programmes.

Among her achievements while working with Beacon Medical Group, Dr Le Page organised the Children’s Commissioner Takeover Challenge day at Beacon Medical Group’s Plympton Health Centre last year.

City urged to back ‘Flying the Flag’ campaign Plymouth residents and businesses are being urged to show their support for a campaign to prevent cuts to Devonport based ships and Royal Marines.

Anglo-American ‘Connections’ project receives funding to bolster tourism Plymouth and twelve destination partners have bid successfully for a £500,000 grant from VisitEngland in a collaborative project to develop a range of experiences directed at the US tourism market.

‘Connections’ will produce a series of new, immersive, bookable English-themed visitor experiences specifically for the American market, encouraging visitors to explore England beyond London.

The experiences will aim to tap in to the fascination of the many connections between England and America - a shared history, language, culture and ancestry. In an effort to inspire many visitors to discover

their roots and the authenticity of local English culture.

Connections is one of a number of successful projects to receive funding from the UK Government’s £40 million Discover England Fund. The Fund is administered

by VisitEngland and involves a programme of activity to ensure that England stays competitive in the rapidly growing global tourism industry, by offering world-class English tourism products to the right customers at the right time.

The Fund is a central government funded programme of activity, supported by match funding by partners in the public and private sectors.

VisitEngland chief executive, Sally Balcombe, said: ‘The calibre of submissions to the Discover England Fund reflects the

innovation in product development thriving across the country’s tourism landscape.

“The successful projects will boost international and domestic visitor growth creating a step-change in the industry and spreading the economic benefits of tourism across England. Our research shows that many US visitors come to Britain due to historic family connections and these ancestry themed itineraries will inspire them to explore more of regional England.

destinations, Connections will develop tourism products in the lead up to 2020, the 400th anniversary of the Mayflower’s historic voyage from Plymouth to the New World.

There were 2.9 million overseas visits to the UK from January to July this year from North America alone, an increase of 21% on the same period last year.

Plymouth along with Bristol, Cambridge, Cornwall, Essex, Gloucester, Hampshire, Hertfordshire, Kent, Lincolnshire, Nottinghamshire, Torbay and Worcestershire will look into themes with significant appeal to US visitors, such as Magna Carta and the rule of law, The Mayflower, Virginia and early American colonisation, WW2, US military and the ‘special relationship.’

Amanda Lumley executive director of Destination Plymouth said: “We know from research we have conducted in the USA that there is significant demand for Mayflower tours to England, in advance of and during 2020.

The project also aims to showcase the best of England’s culture and heritage through the development of a broad range of specialist guided tours and behind the scenes experiences and will be sold in the US via tour operators and travel agents.

“Research has shown that 21% of members of ancestral societies are very likely to take a Mayflower tour; and there is also significant interest among the wider US population.

“The Mayflower 400 team here in the UK are on hand to work with tour operators, travel agents and ground handlers to provide advice and destination information to support the development of further tours.”

Turning the spotlight on child neglect in Plymouth People in Plymouth are being encouraged to spot the signs of child neglect at the earliest opportunity so families can get the help they need quickly.

Neglect is the ongoing failure to meet a child’s basic physical and/or psychological needs, and the most common form of child abuse across the UK. We know that some parents could be struggling and want to ask for help or advice, but don’t know where to turn.

It is important all the children who need help and support get it as quickly as possible before problems get worse and they are harmed; however research shows that many people do not act on their concerns because they worry about being wrong.

The Neglect Matters campaign aims to help people recognise the signs of child neglect and have the confidence to share any concerns, no matter how small, to the localised NSPCC Helpline number of 0808 800 5000.

The Helpline team are available 24/7 via phone and online for free and people can contact us anonymously if they wish. The Helpline now has access to a wealth of local information, allowing a greater level of Plymouth-focused signposting than ever before.

Everyone in Plymouth has a role to play in protecting children and young people from neglect. It may be nothing, but it could be something: every child deserves to be protected.

Aspiring young Plymouth musicians come together to celebrate their ‘Musicality’ Young musicians from across Plymouth are uniting to share their talent for playing at the city’s annual youth music concert.

Musicians from Plymouth Music Education Hub’s (PMEH) city-wide ensembles will take over Plymouth Pavilions on Saturday 3 February at both 2pm and 6.30pm.

The Musicality concert is the highlight of the young musicians’ year and provides a fantastic opportunity to perform in front of an audience whilst also inspiring other up and coming young players.

Over 600 young musicians will play a range of pieces, performing a dazzling programme; from big band and steel pans to choirs there’s something for everyone to enjoy. Tickets are available from the Plymouth Pavilions box office and under 16s go free when accompanied by an adult.

Council Leader Ian Bowyer said: “This is a great opportunity for young musicians to come together and share their love of music. The programme offers a chance for some to experience the thrill of performing and to consider where it may take them next on their musical journey, whilst for others it could be the spark to start their musical journey.”

Plymouth Youth Music Service is part of Plymouth City Council and is the lead organisation for Plymouth Music Education Hub. PYMS organises performance opportunities, ensembles, teaching both in and out of schools and networks to enable young people to get involved in all things musical.

Warm welcome at Central Library on Christmas Day Plymouth’s Central Library will open its doors on Christmas Day, providing a warm welcome to those who may be on their own and would like some company.

Christmas spirit at Jolly Jacks Devonport’s popular waterfront restaurant, Jolly Jacks, is well into the festive season with a full calendar of events.

Run by childhood friends Sally Baum and Sue Robson, the bistro style eatery at the Mayflower Marina in Richmond Walk is popular with the sailing community and landlubbers alike. Recently voted ‘best restaurant’ in the Herald Waterfront awards, Jolly Jacks has been wowing its loyal clientele since it launched in May 2010.

This year, for the second year running, Jolly Jacks decided to put something back into the community that has made them feel so welcome.

A Christmas lunch was thrown at the restaurant with diners of all ages attending the free treat. The lucky guests were found through four local organisations:Improving Lives, the new name for the Plymouth Guild: Hamoaze House at nearby Mount Wise: also from Devonport the Red Velvet Cinema who are based in the George Street Cafe and also members of the Royal British Legion.

The chefs at Jolly Jacks prepared a mouthwatering Christmas dinner for the guests, turkey with all the trimmings followed by Christmas pudding and custard.

Plymouth’s premier crooner, Michael Campari, who’s been playing pubs, clubs and restaurants in the city for ten years with his mix of swing, swoon, standards and big band numbers, provided his services for free. He set the pace with his opening number ‘Come Fly with Me’. The diners lapped it up.

With Christmas decorations, party hats and crackers it was a fun packed, colourful event for everyone.

Caroline Blackler of the Red Velvet Cinema praised Jolly Jacks, “This is a wonderful festive gift for some older people for whom Christmas can be a lonely and isolating time”.

Speaking to the Shopper, Sally Baum said,”The whole ethos of the event is to allow diners to make connections. If our diners can make a new friend for Christmas it will be the best present they can have.”

Sally continued, “It’s the second year we have organised this lunch, and it is rewarding, I’d like to encourage other restaurants and organisations to do the same.”

French students get a taste of Christmas in England

Each year in late November to mid December, around 30 students from the Lycée Notre Dame Ménimur in Vannes, Brittany arrive in Plymouth with supervising teachers, to spend three weeks in work placements around the city.

This year was the 23rd time this partnership with Mayflower College of English has taken place. The

students spend one week at the college to study English, and also take a business tour of the National Marine Aquarium and the New Continental Hotel.

They had a sports session at the Brickfields Centre with a sports development co-ordinator and presented two musical shows with singing and dancing, which entailed a considerable amount of planning and rehearsing.

At the weekend, excursions were organised to Looe, Polperro and the Eden Project. The teacher responsible for this annual organisation was Mrs Catherine Soulier (right side of the photo above).

This year they presented the first show at the Willow Childcare Centre, and the second at Plymouth Age Concern UK in Mount Gould.

Unfortunately, their recent journeys have been more difficult as there are no Brittany Ferry sailings from Roscoff at this time, so they have to travel to and from Portsmouth to St. Malo.

New website to help families spot risks of bowel cancer the risk of developing the disease can be as high as 80 per cent.”

Research at the University of Plymouth has led to the creation of a new website to help families at a high risk of bowel cancer.

Family Web was designed by PhD student Selina Goodman to enable families to share vital information about their genetic diagnosis with other family members and health professionals.

Funded by local charity Bowel Cancer West and approved by the NHS, the website could help thousands of people – with 40,000 new cases of the disease diagnosed every year.

The idea formed when genetic counsellor Selina heard of a young mother in her 30s who, having presented clear symptoms of bowel cancer, was told ‘not to worry’ by her doctor. Had she been able to access information demonstrating her family history at the time, she would have been immediately referred for screening which would have shown that she, in fact, had an inherited form of bowel cancer.

Selina said: “It immediately struck me that there could be a high number of others in a similar position with no way to access this vital information. I knew I had to do something about it and approached Bowel Cancer West for funding.”

diagnosis, Selina was granted £6,000 by the charity and went on to create her website, which is free for people to use.

Selina added: “Family Web allows high-risk patients a secure platform to share information such as letters from the hospital or a family tree [demonstrating a history of Bowel related disease] by a sending a link via email to their relatives.

Users of the website can show their doctor crucial information about their diagnosis by turning on their smartphone, tablet or laptop and looking at their account on the website.

“In its inherited form, bowel cancer can affect people at a younger age, so this website could help to identify links much more quickly – especially in people who might not think they’re susceptible to it. In some families,

Selina is currently writing up her research results but urges more people to make the most of her free website which is now live.

NICE guidelines (published this year) recommend testing all new bowel tumours for genetic markers.

The website has the potential to support family members and health professionals with vital information that is not currently very accessible The feedback Selina has had so far has been extremely positive.

One user said: “It would have been fantastic when I was telling all my relatives. If they feel uncomfortable talking to me, they can access the information without having to approach me so they can have their own privacy with it. My son, for example, would much prefer to receive an email with a link on it than a letter in the post.”

‘Museum On Tour’ moves to House of Fraser Shoppers and visitors to one of Plymouth’s flagship stores now have the chance to experience the ‘Museum On Tour’ programme.

Objects, images, film footage and what’s on information will be displayed in selected areas on Floors 4 and 5 of House of Fraser, Royal Parade and will remain on show throughout 2018.

The ‘Museum On Tour’ programme includes exhibitions, events, partnership projects and community initiatives.

It’s running in a range of offsite venues while the City Museum and Art Gallery’s building is closed for the development of The Box. In a rare move for a department store, House of Fraser will host a display about The Box and ‘Museum On Tour’ programme, complete with film clips from the South

West Film and Television Archive on floor 4.

On floor 5 visitors will be able to view the ‘Plymouth – From Destruction to Construction’ exhibition, which explores the devastation caused by the Blitz and the radical new plan that was developed to rebuild it afterwards.

The exhibition, which was previously on display at the Council House, has been given a revamp in line with its move to House of Fraser, and now includes information about the store itself.

Trading as E Dingle & Co Ltd, the store was burnt to the ground on the night of March 21 1941. Construction work on a new building began in late 1949. On September 1 1951 it became the first new department store to open in the UK for 13 years.

said: “House of Fraser have been fantastic to work with so far and moving our Blitz exhibition and other displays to the store is a chance to develop yet another partnership.

“It’s been an honour to host exhibitions in the Council House – one of Plymouth’s most important civic buildings – in 2017, but House of Fraser is one of the city’s most important commercial buildings. Its history as the first department store to open in the country after the Second World War makes it a very fitting place for us to display an exhibition about the way Plymouth was reconstructed after such devastation.”

Darren Overton, store manager for House of Fraser said: “Retail is evolving and we are really committed to providing our customers with new experiences which complement traditional shopping.

“Our building has a great heritage and it’s one that the ‘Plymouth – From Destruction to Construction’ exhibition is very relevant to. We’re excited about this and the other displays we’ll be hosting during 2018 as part of the ‘Museum On Tour’ programme, and really pleased to be able to work with the Museum and Art Gallery staff while their own building undergoes such a huge transformation.”

‘Plymouth – From Destruction to Construction’ can be viewed free of charge on floor 5 from 9am to 5.30pm Monday to Saturday (9.30am on Tuesdays).

The Box and ‘Museum On Tour’ display can be viewed during normal store hours on floor 4, next to the Buy and Collect area.

Falcon services over the festive period The South West Falcon from Stagecoach will be running throughout the Christmas holiday period, excluding Christmas Day, making it the ideal choice for a trip to the sales, a visit to the panto or a night out at New Year.

With up to 19 journeys a day, the Falcon connects Plymouth, Exeter, Taunton, Bristol Airport and Bristol city centre. All coaches feature free Wi-Fi as well as air conditioning, leather seats and charging sockets.

On Boxing Day, the Falcon will be running a special timetable with the first service departing Plymouth at 8am and the last returning from Bristol at 9pm. From December 27 to 30 it will operate a Saturday service.

Throughout the day and night on New Year’s Eve and

across New Year’s Day it will run a Sunday service, making it the ideal choice for anyone celebrating the start of 2018 with a night out in the South West. Normal timetables will then resume from January 2.

Tickets can be bought direct from the driver and all return fares are valid for up to 28 days. Popular fares include £8 return from Plymouth to Exeter and £15 return from Exeter to Bristol. A group return ticket costs just twice the price of the adult return and allows up to 5 people to travel together.

Customers can also pre-book seats for most journeys via megabus.com where prices for a single journey start at just £1 (+50p booking fee).

Chaddlewood youngsters in entertaining nativity Chaddlewood Primary School in Plympton have been entertaining audiences with their annual nativity play.

The play, Ned’s Christmas Discovery, presented the traditional Christmas story with a fun twist and lots of surprises along the way.

After being asked to take part in a Christmas nativity play, Ned the donkey became inquisitive to discover the true meaning of Christmas. His search took him on an entertaining road of discovery through the hustle and bustle of a busy kitchen preparing Christmas dinner, a visit to a toy shop and an encounter with Santa and his reindeer. His search eventually lead him to a church door where a nativity play was being rehearsed, the one he’d been asked to take part in.

Elizabethan House set for work

Specialists architects are to undertake investigative works on Plymouth’s Elizabethan House project.

The Bristol based firm DHV Architects (Dittrich Hudson Vasetti) will be carrying out an explorative programme of work to get the full picture of the extent of the repairs required.

This initial phase could take up to six months and will mean that some internal and external finishes are removed to reveal the core structure of the house.

Councillor Glenn Jordan, Cabinet Member for Culture, said: “When you look at Plymouth’s history, the Elizabethan time is a big part of that and the fact that we’ve still got an Elizabethan house in the city is something we need to preserve and use to its full effect.”

The council has set aside £1.4 million to repair the Elizabethan House and the Merchant’s House in St Andrew Street.

Scaffolding will need to be erected to enable works to the front and west elevations of the house and as a result, New Street will be closed to vehicles from the first week of January until June 2019. Residents and businesses nearby have received letters to inform them of the closures. Royal Marines ‘Cockleshell Heroes’ recreate the daring wartime raid A group of serving and former Royal Marines and Royal Navy sailors have completed the recreation of the route taken

by Marines who carried out the daring WW2 raid in France 75 years ago - Operation Frankton.

The 30 personnel involved were the first military expedition to include those recovering from long-term physical and psychological issues to complete the 100-mile canoe and 85-mile escape trek undertaken during the so-called ‘Cockleshell Heroes’ operation which destroyed German shipping in Bordeaux Expedition leader Captain Paul Fleet (Royal Marines), who works for the Naval Recovery Centre in HMS Drake, Plymouth, said: “We undertook this exercise for a number of reasons

- firstly to honour the memory of our namesake Major Blondie Hasler and his men of the Cockleshell Heroes on the 75th anniversary of the raid, but also as a major recovery event for my wounded, injured and sick personnel to set themselves a challenge in order to discover what they can still do, not what they can no longer do due to their conditions and injuries.”

The three-day paddle took place in freezing December conditions in replica canvas Cockleshell canoes. The five-day evasion walk was along the Gironde Estuary to where Blondie and Sparks were taken to safety by French agents.

Paul added: “The weather was pretty awful at times and my guys had to really dig deep, but the sense of achievement felt by all was incredible and I am immensely proud of them.”

Any resolution we make requires discipline to maintain – at the end of the day it is up to us if we keep to these resolutions. We decide: it is not the government’s fault or our spouses’ fault or our friend’s fault or even God’s fault if we don’t follow through and do what we say we will.

Here’s another suggestion for 2018 – reduce as much of our debt as we can and even clear it completely if possible. ‘The borrower is the servant of the lender’, says a well respected book and this is true at individual and international levels.

Britain in 2018 is likely to have to face some serious financial issues. Maybe a Brexit ‘divorce’ deal will be finalised – at a significant cost resulting possibly in higher national debt. And on a more micro and local level Universal Credit (UC) continues to be implemented as new claims for benefits are made and poor money management could result in individual debt problems increasing.

UC merges six benefits (child tax credit, housing benefit, income support,

income based job seekers allowance, income related employment and support allowance and working tax credit) into one and replaces the legacy payments with one single monthly payment.

Recent announcements about UC in Plymouth though are encouraging as they suggest that the transition to UC may be less painful than previously imagined. Being rolled out gradually in Plymouth postcodes, all should be going live by Wednesday January 17.

The government aim to remove the much feared seven day waiting period for new claimants from February 2018.

Also from January 2018, the system will change to allow UC claimants an advance of up to 100% of the first month’s payment (with the following 12 months payments being adjusted to account for this). This should help cash flow as the maximum advance figure is currently 50%.

There is also help with an extra two weeks housing costs for the most vulnerable previously receiving housing benefit.

instant results but it is definitely worth the effort for the freedom that can ultimately result. If you do have personal or business debt problems you might appreciate seeing someone locally rather than phoning one of the internet based remote organisations that will only deal with you by phone.

We celebrate His birth at Christmas and every January we at Cross Rhythms endeavour to start this column off with a focus on the Person of Jesus Christ.

Improving Lives Plymouth and Plymouth Citizen’s Advice are working together with Plymouth City Council to provide a joined-up quality information and advice services across Plymouth - Advice Plymouth.

We support patients and carers at Mount Gould Hospital through our Hospital Outreach Worker. Patients can be visited whilst in hospital or when discharged from hospital care.

Help can be given with completing application forms and assessing patient’s entitlement to disability benefits, and around other community support needs.

Christendom, or structured Christianity in the West, is challenged as it endeavours to adapt to social changes since World War 2, but global Christianity continues to grow.

According to ancient scripture (the Bible); historic tradition; history itself and the belief of orthodox biblical Christianity through the ages, Jesus Christ is the focus of global Christianity. Christ lives in the heart and experience of those who believe who He is with lives confirmed by the Holy Spirit.

C.S. Lewis wrote that there are only three options of opinion open to us when we consider the claims Jesus makes about himself: madman, liar or Son of God...

For Christians, Jesus is the one and only Son of God, He has existed with the Father and the Holy Spirit for all eternity, and He came to earth as a man 2,000 years ago in the mysterious act we call the incarnation – quite literally, Heaven invaded Earth.

But who is Jesus to you and me?

A couple of hundred years ago, Napoleon Bonaparte had this to say: “I know men and I tell you that Jesus Christ is no mere man… Alexander, Caesar, Charlemagne, and I have founded empires… upon force. Jesus Christ founded His empire upon love; and at this hour millions of men would die for Him.” In 1926 Dr James Francis wrote the following: “Here is a man who was born in an obscure village, the child of a peasant woman. He grew up in another village.

He worked in a carpenter shop until He was thirty. Then for three years He was an itinerant preacher.

He never owned a home. He never wrote a book. He never held an office.

He never had a family. He never went to college. He never put His foot inside a big city. He never travelled two hundred miles from the place He was born. He never did one of the things that usually accompany greatness. He had no credentials but Himself...

While still a young man, the tide of popular opinion turned against him.

His friends ran away. One of them denied Him. He was turned over to His enemies. He went through the mockery of a trial. He was nailed upon a cross between two thieves.

While He was dying His executioners gambled for the only piece of property He had on earth – His coat. When He was dead, He was laid in a borrowed grave through the pity of a friend.

Nineteen long centuries have come and gone, and today He is a centrepiece of the human race and leader of the column of progress.

I am far within the mark when I say that all the armies that ever marched, all the navies that were ever built; all the parliaments that ever sat and all the kings that ever reigned, put together, have not affected the life of man upon this earth as powerfully as has that one solitary life.”

The foundation of the Christian faith is that Jesus Christ has existed for all time and beyond time. He created us and the world we live in. He beat death in a fight based in hell itself, and He rose from that horrendous place to empower men, women and children with grace to carry on where he left off, defeating fear with love in the power of His Holy Spirit. He sits now, ‘the lamb Who was slain’ on a throne beside his Father’s in heaven and his Father has given Him charge of everything that He has reclaimed with His own life. He has promised He will one day return to bring His peace and the rule of righteous Love in the world.

Prophetic scripture confirms this.

This is who Jesus is, for me, and I believe it’s who the Bible says He is... what about you?

Seven editions reaching 64,000 homes

Royal Navy works with UTC students on recruitment app Computer whizz kids from a Plymouth college have invented a computer application (App) to boost Royal Navy recruitment.

Students and staff from University Technical College (UTC) Plymouth in Devonport presented their Recruiting App project to Rear Admiral John Clink who heads Flag Officer Sea Training (FOST) at a special ceremony in the city.

The college created the App in partnership with the Royal Navy, designed to help everybody who applies to join the Royal Navy and Royal Marines prepare for the Naval Service Recruitment Test (NSRT). The App replaces a booklet containing 32 sample questions with 120 and will be issued to everyone who applies to join the Royal Navy and Royal Marines.

The recruitment test is a timed psychometric assessment forming an important element of the joining process. The

new Recruitment App enables candidates to practice answering sample questions similar to the actual test, either on their laptop, tablet or mobile phone.

Adm Clink said: “The Royal Navy continues to be innovative and embrace modern technology; our recruiting process is just as modern.

“The Recruiting App which the staff and students of UTC Plymouth have developed will offer candidates the ability to practice ahead of their test. The students of UTC Plymouth have made a real difference in helping people prepare for a career in the Royal Navy and Royal Marines.”

Student Kaye Richards, 15, worked on the security of the App. She said: “I feel very proud to have my name and college linked to this website. It’s a worldwide app after all and will be looked at by thousands of people every year. I was set the task of ensuring the security of the App. I was asked to try my best to hack into it and find any loopholes and we are confident of its security from illegal use.’’

Lieutenant Commander George Blakeman, the Royal Navy’s area recruiting officer in the South West, said: “UTC Plymouth has an excellent reputation for science, technology, engineering and mathematics or ‘STEM’ education within the region and has strong links with the Royal Navy.

He approached the IT Department and asked if they could design, develop and build an ‘App’ to better prepare candidates for the Naval Service Recruitment Test.

He added: “Previously candidates were issued a booklet of sample questions which I thought needed

to be updated and brought into the 21st century. UTC Plymouth has delivered an outstanding project which will make a positive and tangible impact on the recruitment process.”

Simon Pykett, UTC Plymouth IT head and project lead said: “We are thrilled to have worked alongside the Royal Navy and provide them with this App. It’s very satisfying to know all of the hard work which we have put into this project will help thousands of people who wish to apply to join the Royal Navy.

“This has also enabled the pupils to put the academic theory they have learnt into practice and produce an IT product which will be used nationwide. I’m sure this

project has inspired some of the pupils to consider a STEM career in the Royal Navy.”

Polly Lovell, UTC Plymouth’s Principal said: “Simon and the pupils have worked hard during the concept, design, develop and build phases in close partnership with the Royal Navy to make sure the ‘App’ met the Royal Navy’s requirements. They invested considerable time and effort during the BETA testing phase to get the Recruiting ‘App’ absolutely right, I’m very proud of the team.”
