Plymkids Youth Company are excited to be returning to the Plymouth Athenaeum, to present this year’s production of Les Misérables! Join us for one of the world’s most loved musicals, performed by a talented cast of young local performers. Some of you may remember the Les Misérables cast from when they created the Mayflower 2020 flashmob performance of One Day, wowing passersby on Armada Way back in September 2017.

A design-led consultant team behind some of the UK’s most impressive regeneration schemes has been appointed to lead a £27 million project to transform the open spaces and pedestrian areas around the city centre.

They will work alongside the city council’s own team in taking visions and principles already outlined in the City Centre Masterplan and Joint Local Plan and turning these into detailed projects.

In 19th century France, Jean Valjean is released from years of unjust imprisonment, but finds nothing in store for him but mistrust and mistreatment. New name, new local editions, same trusted community newspaper The Plymouth Chronicle is the new name for the Plymouth Shopper!

The Better Places initiative comes at a time when Plymouth is benefitting from a series of major investments and schemes already underway in the City Centre and Waterfront area.

The consultant team, who were appointed through a tendering process, are now moving forward into the next stages of the project which will include consultation with the public and stakeholders and the preparation of a business case to cover the detailed design and construction costs for each of the schemes in the city centre.

Steve Hughes, chief executive of the Plymouth City Centre Company, said: “We are delighted with this announcement which means a substantial investment by the council in the city centre.

Plymouth’s Plan for Libraries has taken a step forward with planned refurbishment of Crownhill Library.

Investment includes a new meeting room complete with audio visual equipment, twice as many computers and a refreshed book stock. External and internal signage, including shelf guiding, is also being improved.

The library closed in January for works to be carried out and will re-open at 8.30am on Monday February 12. There will be a pop-up library at Crownhill Methodist Church on Thursdays while the library is closed, from 1.30pm to 4.30pm (with a rhymetime at 2.15pm).

Devonport and Southway Library have already been refurbished, with new meeting rooms and longer opening hours introduced at all three this week.

Councillor Glenn Jordan, Cabinet Member for Culture said: “I’m pleased these improvements are being carried out, meaning we can start to deliver on the proposals set out in the Plan for Libraries.

“Refurbishing libraries like Crownhill means they can host a wider range of activities and longer opening hours will make it easier for people to visit and take advantage of the wide range of services on offer.

Lecturer’s ‘Jewel of India’ award A Plymouth University lecturer has received an award from the Indian Government in recognition of the international impact of her work in her field.

Dr Tina Joshi, a lecturer in Molecular Microbiology, specialises in antimicrobial resistance (AMR) – with her research focusing on designing rapid, point of care tests for detection of AMR genes.

Known as Hind Rattan, the ‘Jewel of India’, the award is given to non-resident Indians (NRI) who have made a significant contribution to their country of birth and simultaneously ‘held the Flag of India high’.

engineering, in collaboration with Cardiff University, and could eventually help doctors diagnose whether or not a patient needs antibiotics, on the spot.

She recently appeared at New Scientist Live with the Royal Society of Biology, discussing the question ‘Could microwaves save my life?’ and explaining how samples can be tested using her device.

Councillor Glenn Jordan, Cabinet Member for Culture, said “We already have popular memory cafés at St Budeaux Library and the Central Library and we’re delighted to be adding another one for those who live in the north of the city.

“The recent refurbishment at Southway Library means it now has a meeting room that can be used for activities and groups such as these, extending the already wide range of services that the library offers.”

The new memory café at Southway Library runs on Thursdays from 10am to midday.

Memory cafés also run at the Central Library on Mondays and St Budeaux Library on Fridays, both from 10am to midday.

At Plympton Library a similar session, the Memory Conservatory, runs fortnightly on Mondays from 2pm to 4pm.

Improvements planned for Morlaix Drive to make way for new bus link Work on a new bus link to Derriford Hospital will begin in the spring next year.

The Morlaix Drive Access Improvement and Bus Priority Scheme will widen Morlaix Drive between Brest Road and the hospital to provide improved access for public transport, pedestrians and cyclists.

Funding for the £4.7 million project will be part-funded by £3.3 million awarded to the council by the Department for Transport in October.

Councillor Patrick Nicholson, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Strategic Transport and Planning, said: “This scheme is a critical piece of the public transport network and part of a package of transport infrastructure improvements aimed at increasing connectivity in the north of the city, particularly by more sustainable means of travel.

“The Morlaix Drive scheme will support increased travel by bus, helping to ensure that the additional travel demand from new housing and employment sites in the Derriford area is catered for, keeping the city moving as it grows and expands.”

Complementing the larger Derriford Transport Scheme, the improvements will enable buses to serve Derriford Hospital and the upgraded bus interchange area at the front of the hospital without using Derriford roundabout and Derriford Road.

This will support improved reliability of buses in the area and provide benefits for traffic using Tavistock Road. It will also maximise the benefits of the recent Marjon Link Road bus link.

Scheme designs are currently being worked up and public consultation will take place later in the year before final designs are agreed. Work is expected to begin in spring 2019.

This decision has been made under delegated authority and is subject to call in by scrutiny.

Charity dinner to mark anniversary of Titanic disaster Plymouth Cruise Liner Volunteers and Titanic and the City of Plymouth are holding a Titanic Anniversary Dinner on April 14 hosted by the Duke of Cornwall Hotel with proceeds going to the Motor Neurone Disease Association.

April 14 marks the anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic in 1912.

The surviving stewardesses who came to Plymouth stayed at the Duke of Cornwall Hotel and organisers will be commemorating with a five course meal taken from the 11 course from the menu on that frightful night.

The entertainment on the night has been specially chosen to bring back the ambience on a cruise with White Star Line.

Tim Peake’s spacecraft to touchdown in Plymouth?

Plymouth could be getting a slice of space history – Tim Peake’s Soyuz descent module.

The city bid to be part of the UK tour of Tim Peake’s Soyuz descent module and has now been shortlisted to host the spacecraft and parachute.

On June 18 2016, Tim Peake returned to earth after six months on board the International Space Station, where he conducted experiments, walked in space and even ran a marathon.

The Science Museum Group acquired the capsule Soyuz TMA-19M and global technology innovators, Samsung, joined forces to create the National Tour of Tim Peake’s Spacecraft and Space Descent VR – a virtual reality adventure using Samsung Gear VR technology which enables visitors to experience what it feels like to sit inside the Soyuz’s descent module as it makes its dangerous highspeed journey home.

The group launched a competition to encourage cities and towns to pitch for the chance to host the unique piece of space technology and Plymouth is now one of five destinations left in the running.

Sounds Musical strut their stuff in Sister Act

Sounds Musical Theatre Company has been entertaining audiences since 1911, developing their own style of musical theatre in diverse ways.

Their new production, the award winning ‘Sister Act’ is under the Musical Direction of Marcus Alleyne and producer Amanda Addison with performances at the iconic Devonport Playhouse from March 7 to 10.

Delores, a worldly nightclub singer, played by newcomer Cairo McFarlane, witnesses a mob crime. The police hide her, for her own protection, in a most unlikely place, disguised as Sister Mary Clarence in the Convent of The Angels, under the suspicious watch of Mother Superior.

Delores brings her own form of ‘divine’ musical inspiration to convent life with hilarious and thought provoking consequences. This ‘feel good‘ musical is full of stirring Gospel and 1970’s disco song and dance and is a testimony to the power of friendship, sisterhood and music.

Local Studies Day to mark 20th anniversary

Local Studies Day marks its 20th anniversary in 2018 and tickets have just gone on sale for a packed day of presentations and talks that explore the region’s history.

This year’s event, which will kick start the 2018 Plymouth History Festival, takes place on Saturday May 5 from 9am to 4.30pm at the Roland Levinsky Building at the University of Plymouth.

As a naval port, Plymouth had developed an infamous reputation for drunkenness and disorderly conduct by 1900 – something which the police forces and magistrate courts in Plymouth, Devonport and East Stonehouse were attempting to control.

The first presentation of the day will look at how the temperance societies in each of the Three Towns realised they would achieve more by sharing resources and campaigning together.

Dr Todd Gray looks at how recent fires in Devon have renewed peoples’ interest in and appreciation of ancient buildings as well as some of the changes in the built landscape that took place in Plymouth during the 1900s.

Pete Holt’s talk puts the focus on Plymouth’s maritime history and details some of the Royal Naval ships that were wrecked off Plymouth from the 1700s onwards – from small armed trawlers, to wooden warships and early World War I submarines.

The city’s Victorian ancestors died from many different illnesses, some of them due to the medicines given by the doctors that were supposed to help them. In ‘Quacks and Quackery in Victorian Plymouth’ Dr Ian Hodgins looks at some of the characters, places and poisons that shaped the health and ill-health of the time.

The event will also include a unique performance by Plymouth-based theatre group Stiltskin inspired by Smeaton’s Tower. A selection of archive film footage and photographs exploring the destruction and reconstruction of the city and a round-up of arts and heritage news from across the city are also on the schedule.

Generous donation of books by Vikki Usborne book organiser Vikki Dernham, has donated a large number of books to the children’s wards at Derriford Hospital.

At the end of last year, Vikki donated £1,000 worth of Usborne books so that children staying at Derriford could have some lovely new books to read.

“As part of my role, one of the things we can offer schools and organisations linked with children is free books!” explained Vikki. “These can be gained by fundraising events to raise the funds and then Usborne will add a percentage of additional free books, depending on the amount raised.”

Plymouth’s charity for older people Age UK Plymouth is a charity which has so much more to offer older people in the city than just ‘lunches and bingo’ (although those are regularly on offer, too!)

The Charity has two centres in Plymouth - The William and Patricia Venton Centre in Mount Gould which offers day activities, dementia and memory services, lunches, good company, support and advice for older people and carers.

The William Venton ‘Active Living’ Centre is in Plymstock and offers a wide range of one to two hour activity sessions these include gentle exercise, line dancing and Yoga to arts, crafts and music groups. Freshly cooked lunches are available for people to enjoy at all Age UK Plymouth centres.

Help at Home with cleaning, laundry, meal preparation and shopping is available and we also provide a handy man, gardening and sitting service.

There is an excellent free Information and Advice service which can advise on a range of issues affecting older people, including getting help with benefits and entitlements, housing options and energy advice. If you have any questions relating to wellbeing , for

yourself, a relative or carer , Age UK Plymouth may be able to help and advise they can also point you safely in the right direction if you need more specialised advice.

If you are an older carer or you are caring for an older person , Age UK Plymouth partners with Improving Lives to offer a Caring for Carers service, which provides support to help people in their caring roles.

People can choose to use whichever services they want, as no professional referral is needed.

The paid for services are subsidised by Age UK Plymouth to make them as affordable as possible. You can check out the range of activities, services and support available below.

Volunteers needed Age UK Plymouth could not provide the range of services it does without the dedication of a great team of volunteers who help older people to remain independent and support them in engaging with activities. Volunteers can give as much or as little time as they can, this could be just an hour or two a week to a full five days – it’s flexible to suit the volunteer’s availability. Dorothy is 93 years young. She lived, worked and brought up her 8 children in Plymouth and she attends the day centre two days a week. Her husband passed away 20 years ago and she lives at home on her own. She specially enjoys the companionship she finds at the Day Centre, talking and doing knitting and embroidery.

“It’s a Godsend coming here,” she says, “it brought me out of myself. The staff are lovely and can’t do too much for you – I love it!”

Kathleen’s Story

Kathleen is the sole carer for her Mum, who lives with her and has dementia. Mum started coming to the Day Centre in 2015, as her dementia started to have more of an impact the trained Age UK Plymouth staff supported her to attend the Dementia Day Centre three days a week.

When her Mum is at the Dementia Day Centre it gives Kathleen much needed time to carry on with her own life, go to Slimming World, have coffee with friends and catch up on all the usual household things that many of us don’t even think of but which become very hard for someone caring for an older relative with complex needs. She found the

information and advice on Mum’s benefits and council tax payments extremely helpful.

“It’s so difficult otherwise to find out what’s available,” she said. “The Dementia Day Centre is so, so necessary for me and Mum. I’d be lost without this support.”

Emily’s compassion and community work is recognised with top award Emily Powell, 18, from Eggbuckland was recognised at the recent Student of the Term awards, which celebrates the exceptional achievements of City College students.

Emily was recognised for her compassionate nature and work with the community with the Care Student of the Term award.

City College’s director of business, hospitality, care and lifestyle, Teresa Gardner, said: “Emily’s fantastic attitude towards her learning really sets her apart from the crowd and makes her a very worthy winner of a Student of the Term award. Hardworking, enthusiastic and never without a smile on her face, Emily is a real joy to have at the College.”

Emily spent the summer volunteering at her work placement and completed an impressive 850 work hours.

She has recently returned from a trip to Mexico where she helped to build homes for the less fortunate.

Emily said: “I love helping people and to be recognised for pursing what I’m passionate about is a real honour.

I had a lovely evening and I am so proud to have been given a Student of the Term award.”

The Student of the Term awards recognise students who are making a positive contribution to their course, the College or the local community - over and above what is expected.

Held in the College’s PL1 Restaurant, the food was prepared and served by current hospitality and catering students. The awards evening was attended by each of the 16 Student of the Term winners and their families, their nominating lecturers, College staff and Governors.

Taking the right path at Derriford Community Park Plymouth City Council has been seeking the views of local residents on plans for a new green space.

A series of consultation events took place in January to display proposals for the foot and cycle path network through the new Derriford Community Park.

The paths will connect Crownhill, Eggbuckland, Estover, Leigham and the new Seaton neighbourhood with high quality routes for access through the Forder and Bircham valleys.

Councillor Patrick Nicholson, deputy leader and Cabinet member for Strategic Transport, Housing and Planning, said: “The community park is going to be a fantastic asset to the city, with new housing and employment proposed to be built in and around Derriford over the next 20 years.

Plymouth City Council has teamed up with Devon Wildlife Trust, the Environment Agency and South West Water among others to make the park a ‘Local Nature Partnership Hub’ valuing food, wildlife, learning and volunteering.

New kit for Plymouth’s green spaces Brand new, state-of-the-art grass cutting equipment will be used by teams from Plymouth City Council in 2018.

Over £500,000 will be invested in new ground maintenance equipment to keep the city’s parks neat, verges tidy and wildflower meadows at their best.

Ride on mowers with flail decks especially designed for wildflower meadows are among the new fleet, as are grass cutters that are capable of cutting some of Plymouth’s sloping banks with a better quality of cut.

Councillor Mike Leaves, Cabinet Member for Streetscene and the Environment, said: “Keeping our ground maintenance equipment up to date helps us stay on top of all the work that needs to be done to keep our parks and green spaces looking lush and inviting.

“Older machines can be costly to run and maintain so we have invested in upgrading the fleet to be more efficient.

The funding for the new equipment has been approved as a loan from the Capital budget. The investment will help cut the amount of machinery breakdowns which not only cost money but also disrupts the city’s grass cutting schedule.

This investment means the council can purchase products which provide a better quality cut of grass areas including the many grassed banks.

Plymouth in running for ‘Best Bar None’ Award Plymouth and Torquay have made it through to the final stage of the prestigious ‘National Best Bar None Awards’.

With only two other regions in the running, Bolton and Sheffield, the odds look good for a Devon victory! Both schemes are now eagerly awaiting the final, which will be held at a special parliamentary reception at the House of Lords on February 5.

The competition carries a prize fund of over £5,000.

Plymouth and Torquay are both in the running for ‘Best Overall Scheme’, which highlights the positive impact the Best Bar None scheme has in a local area and carries a prize fund of £3,000, as well as Most Innovative Scheme, awarded to the most creative concept or and initiative introduced to make a difference in the local area, with a £1,000 prize.

Launched in 2003, Best Bar None is a Home Office backed scheme that works with the alcohol industry, police and local authorities to promote responsible alcohol consumption and higher professional licensing standards in pubs, bars and clubs.

Winners of Plymouth Christmas Trails receive their prizes The winners of the waterfront’s Snowflake Trail and the city centre’s Nutcracker Trail have been announced. The trails ran through December and over 1,000 competition entries were received.

The second ever Snowflake Trail, organised by Plymouth Waterfront Partnership (PWP), was even bigger than the first year and saw hundreds of people explore the waterfront looking for snowflakes hidden amongst shops, restaurants and visitor attractions.

Sarah Gibson, waterfront manager and chief executive of PWP said: “We built on the success of the 2016 Snowflake Trail, growing the activity and the associated marketing campaign for Christmas 2017.

“We were delighted to see so many more people take part; we received entries ranging from children, right up to adults which once again reflects the wide ranging appeal of the Snowflake Trail.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our

Aiming high: Plymouth’s plan for the Class of 2020 Plymouth’s children and young people look set to benefit from an exciting new plan for education.

Schools, academies and nurseries are being asked to join a partnership with Plymouth City Council as part of a bold move to drive up improvements through more collaboration and support across education in the city.

The Plan for Education was unveiled in January and sets out a vision of what the class of 2020 will look like.

The plan wants schools to: • Increase the proportion of pupils gaining a good GCSE in English and maths to be in line with or exceed national average • Reduce the gaps in attainment between disadvantaged and non-disadvantaged pupils by 50 per cent at the end of KS4 • Raise the attainment of boys by 10 per cent by the end of KS4 • Increase the achievement of pupils with special educational needs As well as raising standards, the Plan for

Education will focus on planning for pupil growth, developing an improved more integrated system for pupils with Special Educational Needs , skills and STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) – educating and preparing the workforce of the future and creating a strong system through partnership.

Councillor Terri Beer, Cabinet Member for Children and Young People said: “We are really excited by this as it’s an opportunity to drive up standards across the board for all children and young people – whatever school they go to. We have been talking to schools for some time now about how this could work and what they would need to drive up attainment and vitally, aspirations, so that all our children and young people thrive and get the best education they can.”

Details of how the partnership will work are currently being discussed with schools and a city education board would have oversight of the plan.

The partnership would mean schools and other education settings could access expert

support to help them improve attainment levels and raise aspirations in our young people.

It would also explore using innovation to address issues. Under the proposal, the Plan for Education outlines three key roles for the Council. They are to: • Champion the interests of parents and pupils by monitoring and challenging the work of all providers and schools. Through stewardship, parents and pupils will have their voices clearly heard and their interests effectively met.

• Commission a range of services and educational provision from a range of providers, including early years’ settings, schools and health, as a means of securing improved outcomes for all learners.

• Collaboration: to promote and organise ways in which schools and the council can collaborate and work in partnership with providers to secure improvement through networks and cooperative trusts. Through integration, where feasible it will promote a shared vision of aspiration and reduce inequality.

Last unit sold at Apollo Court waterside development A unique commercial development in Plymouth has proved a hit with property investors and owner occupiers.

City College students take over The Duke of Cornwall for a week A group of students from City College in Plymouth have been involved in a ground-breaking project at The Duke of Cornwall Hotel.

Students and staff from the college took over the Duke of Cornwall for a week in January, handling everything from their reception desk and housekeeping to the hotel’s award-winning food and bar service.

The event, dubbed ‘City College@The Duke’, was the

first of its kind in the city and gave students a unique opportunity to experience the day-to-day running of an established hotel under the tutelage of the Duke of Cornwall’s expert staff.

The Duke’s director, Jonathan Morcom, is a former graduate of the college and has enjoyed a close working relationship with them over the years.

He said: “My best memories of the college were the opportunities we were given to actually work in real-life kitchens and experience the industry first hand.

“That’s why we’ve worked with City College to provide work placements and apprenticeship opportunities for their students here at The Duke. I believe it is important for us to give back to the community and really show young people what a career in the hotel and catering industry looks like.

“People asked if I was nervous but, honestly, I had total confidence in the calibre of students that the college can produce. Families encouraged to get Sugar Smart Families in Plymouth were able to find out about a new mobile phone app to help them buy healthier snacks at a Change4Life roadshow.

Change4Life is an ongoing campaign led by Public Health England (PHE) and the latest phase aims to encourage parents to buy healthier snacks for their children. A roadshow was held at Tesco in Transit Way, led by PHE and supported by Plymouth City Council and Livewell Southwest, at which parents and carers got the chance to find out about the new Change4Life ‘Food Scanner’ app.

The campaign encourages parents, when shopping, to “look for 100 calorie snacks, two a day max.”

This is because half the sugar that children consume, currently around 7 sugar cubes a day, comes from

unhealthy snacks and sugary drinks, leading to obesity and dental decay.

Councillor Terri Beer, Cabinet Member for Children and Young People for Plymouth City Council, said: “The ‘Food Scanner’ app works by scanning barcodes of products to bring food labels to life by highlighting the amount of calories, sugar, saturated fat and salt is in everyday food and drinks.

“It’s not always easy to know what is the healthier option so we support this initiative which can help improve children’s health and help in making healthy choices easier.”

Mansbridge Balment make it a sporting double for soccer kids Soccer mad management at Mansbridge Balment Plymouth have done the double – agreeing a sponsorship deal with two junior football teams in the city.

The Plymouth City office has supplied team shirts, complete with the agency logo, to Activate United under 12s, while the Plymouth North branch is similarly supporting the local Woolwell Dynamos.

Wellbeing hubs to open across Plymouth

A network of wellbeing hubs are to be opened across Plymouth to give residents easier and earlier access to health advice and support.

It is hoped that enabling more people to get the right type of help earlier will ultimately reduce pressure on social care and health services.

The hubs will offer information and support on a range of issues such as health and wellbeing, finance, employment and mental health, with some offering more specialist support in areas where it is most needed.

Locations such as libraries, GP surgeries, children’s centres and job centres will be part of a network of universal hubs where existing trained staff will provide advice, information and signposting at all opportunities, as well as ensuring people can access easy to use online information and advice.

The Plymouth City Council and North Eastern and Western Devon Clinical Commissioning Group initiative aims to make it easier for people to get advice by providing it in places they are likely to be visiting anyway.

Targeted hubs will be located in places where people naturally congregate and will offer the same as universal hubs but will provide a further level of support to patients in areas where there are specific needs and a range

of activity to combat loneliness and provide volunteering opportunities.

Swapping South America for the South West From Brazilian sun to Plymouth fun, City College Plymouth welcomed nine Brazilian students to get a taste of the tourism industry in Britain’s Ocean City.

Funded by the Brazilian Ministry of Tourism, and brokered by the Association of Colleges, the group of 19 to 23 year olds is visiting the College for 11 weeks to discover more about tourism in the UK. The college’s International team, who organised the exchange, used their many links with colleges and universities all over the world to enable this interchange of culture, knowledge and experience. It was the first time the college had worked with a college from Brazil.

“We felt we had a good bid to host these students, as Plymouth has so much to offer as a tourism hub. Also the provision here at the college covers such a broad spectrum of the industry,” said the college’s head of international development, Jessica Randall.

“We are rotating the students through different areas of our tourism curriculum, such as cabin crew and holiday repping, with the aim of covering all the different disciplines.

tourist attractions, such as Paignton Zoo and the Eden Project, to showcase Devon and Cornwall as major tourist destinations.

Free school outreach visits with the RSPB As part of a nationwide campaign to re-connect young people with nature, the RSPB has teamed up with Aldi to provide free outreach sessions to thousands of primary schools and early year’s children across Plymouth.

The partnership between Aldi and the RSPB was launched in response to the well-documented decline in the time British children spend outdoors and in nature.

Recognising the benefits of nature on children’s learning, health and wellbeing, the project was developed to inspire the next generation to discover, enjoy and look after the natural world.

In the first two years of the project Aldi donated over £2 million from the sale of their carrier bags, providing opportunities for 1,000 schools in 17 cities across England, Wales and Scotland to experience the free outreach sessions. The fun and engaging workshops aim to teach pupils about the wildlife and habitats found in and around the school grounds, and provide inspiration for easy ways to make improvements for wildlife. Topics that are covered by the sessions include wildlife identification, habitat mapping, and mini beast hunting and are all linked to National Curriculum learning outcomes.

Gemma Dunn, schools outreach project officer for Plymouth said: “We are excited to be entering our second year as part of this project, delivering fantastic sessions to primary schools and early year providers in the local area. ‘Aquarium Ambassador’ role for professional sailor Henry Professional sailor Henry Bomby has been appointed as a National Marine Aquarium ‘Ocean Ambassador’.

Competing in the Volvo Ocean Race, which sees seven crews sail around the world, Henry’s participation goes beyond sailing.

As an Ocean Ambassador for the National Marine Aquarium, Henry will act as an extended member of the Aquarium’s Discovery and Learning team to help deliver its mission by sharing vital information on topics such as overfishing and plastic pollution.

As part of the Turn the Tide on Plastic team, Henry and his crew mates are supporting scientific research by collecting water samples to investigate micro plastics in our oceans - often in parts of the world that are rarely analysed due to their distance from land.

Through his personal experience and connection with these subjects, along with the expert information he will learn from the NMA’s team, Henry will be well equipped to inspire the nation to think about their actions for the greater good of our oceans.

Henry, 26, now joins the NMA in flying the flag for its mission of connecting us with our oceans and promoting pro-ocean behaviour, creating healthier oceans for the benefit and enjoyment of all.

Devon-born Bomby grew up sailing from a young age, taking on his first offshore adventure at the age of 18, single-handedly circumnavigating Britain.

Becoming an Ocean Ambassador, alongside his exciting race aboard the Turn the Tide on Plastic sailing yacht, provides Henry with a great opportunity to share his passion for the oceans and explain why

Pups to the rescue as Plymouth welcomes the Paw Patrol pair Two beloved characters from one of the most popular children’s TV shows are coming to Plymouth this month to the delight of their young fans.

Chase and Marshall from PAW Patrol will be in the city on Tuesday February 13 in the atrium of Drake Circus.

PAW Patrol, as seen on Nick Jr., thrills pre-schoolers every week with tales about a pack of search and rescue dogs led by a boy called Ryder.

Together they protect the seaside community of Adventure Bay, rescuing people in peril with Chase and Marshall never far from the action.

Each dog has a specific set of skills based on a reallife profession, with Marshall acting as a firefighter and Chase working as a police officer.

As two of the city’s most popular fundraising events are launched this month, St Luke’s Hospice Plymouth is laying down a challenge to men and women in the community - who can raise the most funds for the vital end of life care the charity provides?

Men’s Day Out and the ladies’ Neon Midnight Walk are two of St Luke’s flagship events, raising money to help ensure it can continue to give free and outstanding care to people living with a life limiting progressive illness, as well as supporting their families.

Both events are an opportunity for people to gather their friends, walk in memory of loved ones and create new memories while enjoying the fun atmosphere.

This year’s Men’s Day Out, on March 24, is set to be manlier than ever.

Powered by IU Energy, the day of rugby and banter will see 2,000 men – many in fancy dress – walking a 12km route through Plymouth city

centre and along the South West Coast Path before enjoying a wellearned pasty and pint at Plymouth Albion where Albion take on Coventry in a top of the table clash.

Events fundraiser Rebecca Kelly said: “Men’s Day Out, generously sponsored by IU Energy, is hugely popular and sells out fast, so we’re urging our male supporters to register now to avoid disappointment. It’s a chance for them to do their bit, remember loved ones and have a great time.”

Registration for the event is £32, which provides a t-shirt, pasty, pint and rugby match ticket as well as covering the logistics of the day.

Also putting their best foot forward for St Luke’s will be thousands of women ‘getting their glow on’ to take part in this summer’s Neon Midnight Walk, on Saturday July 21.

The event, sponsored by Nash & Co Solicitors, will see the ladies striding along a 3, 6 or 13.1 mile route from the Piazza, Royal Parade, through Plymouth, remembering loved ones

and enjoying the electric atmosphere with their friends.

There will be a warm-up with party tunes at the Piazza before the first walkers set off at 9pm. This year’s warm up will be lead by Cheezifit, the new craze that’s sweeping Plymouth, the innovative way to exercise while listening to favourite cheesey tunes.

Rebecca Kelly said: “Uniting the women of our community, our Neon Midnight Walk is the city’s favourite ladies’ night out.

“We’re grateful to Nash & Co Solicitors for supporting this event once again, and we’re urging women of all ages and fitness levels to go even bigger and brighter this year, with neon outfits, lots of sparkle and glow sticks.”

It’s not kids play as college hosts regional heat of LEGO FIRST the ultimate science and technology challenge

Proving that LEGO is more than just child’s play, teams of students from across Devon and Cornwall competed in the ultimate science and technology challenge.

They were taking part in the FIRST LEGO League Tournament, organised by the Institution of Engineering and Technology and sponsored and hosted

by City College Plymouth.

For the regional heat, teams of nine to 16 year olds were tasked with designing, building and programming a robot to tackle a series of missions and creating an innovative solution to a real world problem.

The event, held in the College’s Regional Centre of Excellence for STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths), was a chance to showcase the various skills they had developed during the months of preparation.

This year’s real world problem saw students learn all about water and how we find, transport, use, or dispose of it in the FIRST LEGO League HYDRO DYNAMICS Challenge.

Teams had to demonstrate their skills in robotics, computer programming, teamwork, research, problem solving and communication, as well as needing to demonstrate the FIRST LEGO League core values, which include respect and friendly competition.

There are 45 FIRST LEGO League tournaments taking place across the UK and Ireland. They are fun and exciting events where the teams have to put their robot through its paces, and communicate their ideas, sharing what they have learnt with the judges. The judging panel was made up of representatives from local businesses in the STEM sector including: the National Marine Aquarium, Mayflower 400, Babcock and Plymouth City Council.

The day culminated in an awards ceremony set-up by City College’s live events students in the STEM Theatre.

The trophies made from LEGO shone beneath the lights as Budehaven Community School were announced as the winners.

The team will be heading to Bristol for the UK and Ireland Final at the University of West of England (UWE) on February 24.

This will be an opportunity for the top achieving teams to represent their country and the IET on a global stage, competing at International Championships in Hungary, Estonia and the USA in 2018 “It’s been a fantastic day,” said a parent of the winning team. “I’ve loved it and so have the kids. They’ve done amazingly well and have had a great time chatting to the other schools and showing off their robot.

“We were so surprised to win; this was not something they ever expected. The kids are very excited to go to Bristol and I’m sure it will be a brilliant experience for them.”

Andy Robinson, City College’s STEM Hub Officer, said: “The college is committed to enhancing STEM skills in the region and part of that is encouraging young people to explore the fun side of these subjects.

“We were delighted to work with the schools on FIRST LEGO League and it was so great to see all of the innovative solutions they came up with in the regional heat. We wish Budehaven Community School the best of luck in the UK final.”

FIRST LEGO League is part of a wider IET education programme, made up of a whole host of teaching resources and activities to inspire and attract the engineers of tomorrow.

Lego students put their robots to the test

Work starts on new sports facility for Manadon and Honicknowle Work to transform an artificial football pitch into a brand new sports facility for the Manadon and Honicknowle communities is now under way.

The Argyle Community Trust is teaming up with Plymouth City Council to create a new football, cricket and outdoor sports centre that will be one of the best in the city.

Based on the site of the former Ministry of Defence pitches on St Peter’s Road, the Manadon Sports Centre will include: a Football Association-standard third generation (3G) artificial playing pitch, together with new floodlights and security fencing, two new junior grass football pitches, a new artificial cricket wicket and eight grass wickets, a two-storey pavilion with a permanent office for the trust, a four changing room complex, a training room and a multi-purpose room.

Improvements will also be made to the car park and entrance.

Funded by the Premier League and The FA Facilities Fund, Sport England and the England and Wales Cricket Board, supported by contributions from the council and the trust, the new facility will inspire people from across Plymouth and beyond and is expected to increase the number of people taking part in physical activity at the site from 17,500 a year to 30,000.

The Argyle Community Trust will take on the lease under a community asset transfer arrangement, along with responsibility for ongoing maintenance and day-to-day operations.

“We are absolutely thrilled to have reached this pivotal stage in the project,” said Argyle Community Trust Manager Mark Lovell. “The project has involved a great deal of planning and I would like to place on record my sincere thanks to Plymouth City Council and all the partners involved.

“It has been a genuine partnership throughout and a

source of huge pride that we have now reached the stage of seeing real construction at the site. There is no doubt the Manadon Sports Centre is the largest project ever undertaken by the Trust and a reflection of the progress we have made over the past decade.

“Working in unison with Plymouth City Council and Plymouth Argyle Football, it will be a very special moment when people of the community get to enjoy this fantastic facility.”

Council Leader and local ward councillor Ian Bowyer said: “It’s so exciting to see work getting under way on what will not only be Plymouth’s first cricket and football development hub but also a massive boost to the area.

“We’re delighted to be working with the Argyle Community Trust and other partners to significantly improve one of the priority sites in our Playing Pitch Plan and make a big difference to sports clubs, groups and the local community.

“The new centre will provide the high-quality facility residents deserve, as well as a much-needed indoor space for meetings and social activities. “ It will also mean there’s a new ground for the Plymouth Civil Service Cricket Club, which currently has to play outside the city boundary and the Roborough Cricket Club.”

Construction began in January with the replacement of the astroturf, followed by work on the new pavilion, which will get underway in early February.

The Manadon Sports Centre project will create employment, apprenticeship and volunteering opportunities as well as access to training, development and life skills courses for young people.

Volunteer at Central Park Volunteers are being sought to help with conservation, horticulture and general improvements in Central Park.

Plymouth City Council have teamed up with Eco Land Management and the Friends of Central Park to run events alongside the improvements programme.

Plymouth solicitors play key role in securing £26 million health contracts Plymouth law firm, GA Solicitors, has advised a national healthcare organisation on the acquisition of 17 commercial property leases around the UK after it secured NHS contracts worth £26 million as part of a company buy-out.

ERS Transition Ltd, a leading emergency and non-emergency patient transport provider, secured nationwide contracts with the NHS totalling £26 million when it purchased the ERS Medical Brand from SRCL Limited.

As part of this deal it acquired 17 leasehold properties across the North East, North West, South East and the Midlands which needed to be advised upon by a suitably experienced law firm.

The Leeds based organisation instructed GA Solicitors’ commercial property team

to undertake the specialist landlord and tenant work, advising upon 17 different tenancy agreements, each with varying lengths and restrictions. The properties were a mix of offices and industrial units, with lease terms ranging from two to ten years.

David Stone, partner of GA Solicitors and head of the commercial property team commented: “ERS Transition is one of the largest independent healthcare service providers in the UK so this was a significant client win for the firm.

“Due to the number of different tenancies this was a relatively complex matter.

Each contract required thorough investigation to identify any potential risks for our client and advice given on each aspect.

“Added to this, due to time restrictions with the deal, all 17 leases had to be transferred with landlords’ consents secured within a three month period.

“The work was concluded efficiently and GA Solicitors will now continue to work with ERS to ensure ongoing management of its extensive property portfolio.”

John Fraser, director of ERS Transition Limited, added: “We purchased an established business, securing several multi-million pound NHS contracts and with it, the numerous properties across the UK. “Timing restrictions and the need to coordinate the property handovers with the transfer of the relevant NHS contract, meant all the leases needed to be transferred in geographically based batches within a three month window.

“GA Solicitors worked meticulously on each lease, highlighting any potential issues and ensuring the relevant transfers were completed and consents secured within each and every deadline.We will look forward to continuing this relationship and working with them in the future.”

ED’S SUPER FANTASTIC LITTLE BOOK OF RECIPES CATERed has launched its own recipe book to share nutritious, delicious meal ideas with families in Plymouth.

The award winning school meals caterer has joined forces with Plymouth Libraries to create ‘Ed’s Super Fantastic Little Book of Recipes’ which was launched at Devonport Library.

Children from three CATERed schools – St Joseph, Mount Wise and Marlborough were handed the very first copies of the recipe books to take home by CATERed

ambassadors Ed and CATE.

They will also have the chance to make two recipes from the book ‘Smashing Smoothies’ and, straight from the school meals menu, the famous ‘Custard Biscuits’ with help from CATERed and Library staff. The children also got the chance to try some bite sized tasters of dishes appearing in the exciting new cook-book including meatballs, cheese wheels and courgette sausages.

Brad Pearce, managing director, said: “Our menus are designed by young people, for young people whilst always

considering health and nutritional benefits. It seemed like the next logical step to make our meals available to families by creating a recipe book. We’re absolutely thrilled to have worked with Plymouth Libraries to help bring some of our most popular recipes to print so that they can be enjoyed at home as much as they are enjoyed in school dining rooms across Plymouth!”

It’s not the first time the two organisations have worked together to combine the benefits of reading and healthy eating for children in the city. The pair delivered

‘Lunch at the Libraries’ last August as part of Ed’s Big Summer Food Tour 3.

Plymouth Library service was awarded £56,026 from the Libraries Opportunities for Everyone Innovation Fund to work with CATERed to increase access to library services and a healthy meal during the summer holidays.

School meals menus are refreshed each year with new dishes as well as featuring some regular favourites. The dishes are chosen by Ed’s city-wide Children’s Food Panel, made up of pupils from schools across Plymouth.

Happy Thanksgiving!

You are probably wondering why an article written for a February publication in England has a title referring to an annual American celebration which takes place in November. Well, rather than reveal all now, read on and it will become clear.

People volunteer for different reasons, such as, to meet new people, to connect to their community, to enhance their CV, to help people and make a difference or to use their skills.

One of our Volunteer Connections advisors explained why she started to volunteer and the benefits it gave her.

This time of year can be difficult for many. There is research out there to suggest that January is the toughest month of the year when many people struggle with depression and find life that bit more difficult than usual.

Several different reasons have been proposed for this; the cold and often stormy weather, short daylight hours, the come down from Christmas time, our bodies feeling the effect of too much unhealthy food and alcohol consumed over the festive period and failure to keep new year resolutions so soon after setting them are all said to contribute.

As a result of these struggles in January, more holidays are booked than at other times in the year, luxury goods see a spike in sales and even divorce rates rise too.

With this as a back drop, in early in January I was intrigued to stumble across this quote; ‘A heart at peace gives life to the body, but envy rots the bones.’ The quote comes from the book of Proverbs in the Bible. For some reason, like a catchy tune, it stuck with me and I couldn’t get it out of my head for days.

It got me thinking about this time of year and the struggles we can all face and looking at it from a particular angle. That of envy and its effect on us. I think it was this aspect of the quote that really got to me. The thought of something rotting bones is a very visceral image and suggests it is something we should take seriously! Of course I understand it’s a metaphor but it is an effective one which leaves you in no doubt that the writer considers envy as tremendously damaging.

I wonder whether envy contributes more to the difficulties we face at this time of year than we realise? It is all too easy to look at other people and be envious of their lives.

We become envious of how other people look. Particularly at this time of year when one too many minces pies have had their effect on our bodies! We can look at other people’s belongings, their houses, cars and gadgets and feel envious about what we don’t have.

We can look online at social media and be envious of where other people have travelled and the holidays they have.

We can look at the so called ‘perfect’ relationships of those around us and feel ours are comparatively inadequate.

Envy may not literally rot the bones but it certainly takes its toll!

This can hit us at any time in the year but with the perceived new start a new year brings, in January we can have a keener sense of all the things in our lives that we would like to change and almost inevitably a measure of envy creeps in.

So where does that leave us? Tied to a life of comparison and jealousy? Well the first part of the quote I mentioned states ‘a heart at peace gives life to the body’. All well and good you might say, but how do we get a heart at peace? One of the ways in which I think this can happen is through changing our perspective from comparison to thanksgiving.

There, see, I told you I would explain the title! Thanksgiving is vital for a healthy life. It’s not something that should be reserved to an American national holiday once a year. Being grateful for what we have and the good in our lives goes a long way to helping us have a heart at peace.

A person with a thankful heart is a person no longer striving to be like everyone else. They are a person at rest with themselves and their position in the world. Take some time and I’m sure you can think of many things that you are truly thankful for!

If, for genuine reasons, being thankful is particularly difficult then I do not blame you. It isn’t an easy thing and I don’t write this article as a ‘power of positive thinking’ piece. Rather I believe the same book from which I took the quote about envy provides the ultimate reason for us to be thankful.

So I will leave you with a set of song lyrics written by an artist called Larry Norman some years ago, ‘Why don’t you look into Jesus? He’s got the answer’.

Seven editions reaching 64,000 homes

Green light given for new Central Park café Planning permission for the new Central Park cafe has been granted.

The café will be built adjacent to the clock tower, at the busiest and most visible points of the park. It is one of the flagship projects of the Central Park Masterplan, which sees a £9 million investment in one of Plymouth’s most popular green space.

The café will overlook a brand new play area and will be close to new tennis courts, bowling greens and the refurbished skatepark.

Plymouth City Council is now seeking an operator to run the café when building work has been completed in autumn 2018.

Early market research has suggested that there will be stiff competition from potential vendors who operate similar

ventures all over the country.

Councillor Patrick Nicholson, Deputy Leader and Cabinet member for Strategic Transport, Housing and Planning, said: “We’re delighted to have gained planning permission and we’re really excited to move forward.

“We’re expecting a high standard of response now that we’re advertising the lease and we have a careful scoring matrix to ensure an operator is selected who will deliver what the public want in Central Park.”

The new café will seat around 25 people with an outdoor seating area providing extra capacity in better weather.

Designed by Erect Architecture, the café will have a grass roof, a large amount of glazing and canopy-covered external seating area.

The high-quality design aims to reflect and

take advantage of the natural landscape and stunning views in the park, enhanced by LDA Design. It will also provide toilets free of charge for all park users during opening hours.

It will be an ideal spot for all ages and provide a base for families to enjoy refreshments while being able to watch children playing.

The council is seeking an operator for a long leasehold who has the experience and desire to provide a unique venue and offer that promotes healthy eating and environmental sustainability within an affordable price range. The designs for Central Park’s new skatepark have been finalised and work will begin on the site in the near future.

As part of the wider improvements to the park, Plymouth City Council has teamed up with Freestyle Skateparks to revamp the skatepark and turn it into a destination facility, offering something for beginners, right through to professionals which could also host events and competitions in the future Plans include an extension to the existing site with a snake run, popular with skaters and BMX riders. There will also be a training bowl for those less confident riders and skaters and

additional seating for spectators.

Following feedback at a recent consultation event, a “slappy kerb” and a “pole jam” for skateboarding tricks have been added to the design, and the free running area has been amended to improve the flow between structures.

Patrick Nicholson, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Strategic Transport, Housing and Planning, said: “This is another fantastic outdoor facility for Plymouth and an exciting space for both new and experienced skaters and riders to hone their talents.

“I’m very happy about how many young people have been involved in this process and their

enthusiasm and passion for the project has been contagious.”

The improvements to the skatepark form just a small part of the wider Central Park Masterplan.
