Double celebration at City College

the Gold standard City College Plymouth is the top performing further education college in the South West for its apprenticeship programme - and that’s official.

Staff and students are celebrating after the recent release of the National Achievement Rate Tables, which revealed that City College has a success rate 14% above the national average.

It is one of the largest apprenticeship providers in the country, working with more than 1,300 local employers and its programme has been rated as ‘outstanding’ by Ofsted.

The news of its apprenticeship success came just a few days before another accolade for City College - which was awarded Gold on the Teaching Excellence Framework for its university level higher education.

The Teaching Excellence Framework was introduced by the Government to

record the performance of the UK’s higher education sector. Universities, colleges and alternative providers of higher education voluntarily took part in the TEF. Each provider was rated Gold, Silver or Bronze.

It was the only Plymouth education body to be awarded Gold, with Marjon achieving Silver and both Plymouth College of Art and Plymouth University receiving Bronze.

Residents living around the Hoe will have more of a say in future developments in their areas, thanks to a new neighbourhood forum.

Plymouth City Council has approved the designation of a Neighbourhood Area to cover the Hoe, taking in West Hoe, with Ballard House on its west boundary and up to and including the Citadel on the east.

The northern boundary of the area being proposed includes Princess Street. Under the Localism Act 2011 groups can apply to become a neighbourhood forum with a boundary and write their own neighbourhood plan, a planning policy document, for that area.

The forum would also become statutory consultees for all planning applications. The plans are written by the local community and in Plymouth, there are currently three neighbourhood forums in Barne Barton, Devonport and Plympton St. Mary.

Across the country there are 293 adopted neighbourhoods. Residents could create their own plan that will shape development in the future – whether that’s where to build homes, business premises or facilities such as surgeries and play areas.

Councillor Patrick Nicholson, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Strategic Housing, Transport, and Planning, said: “Through the Plymouth Plan and the Joint Local

Plan we have always been incredibly keen to make sure the people who live here are listened to and that their insight is taken into account.

“This part of the city is incredibly important to the economy and to our tourist offer, but it is also home to thousands of people. This forum will help give them a stronger voice.”

Now that the first step has been achieved, the local community will now progress with help from the local authority to write the Hoe Neighbourhood Plan. A map of the neighbourhood area, the details of the forum and constitution is on www.plymouth.gov.uk/ hoeneighbourhoodplan

City College top of the class • continued from front page up to degree level, and more than 170 industry options available, apprenticeships have never been a more attractive proposition for those looking to start their careers or those who’d like to gain a recognised qualification.

The attraction of earning a wage, while learning on-thejob and gaining qualifications, is obvious but the benefits go far beyond the apprenticeship itself. After finishing, 90% of apprentices stay in employment, with seven in ten staying with the same employer. A quarter are promoted within 12 months of finishing.

On average, individuals with an advanced apprenticeship earn between £77,000 and £117,000 more over their lifetime than others with Level 2 qualifications; this figure increases to £150,000 for those completing a higher apprenticeship.

Bethany Parker, 18, is a City College hospitality apprentice, employed by The Boathouse Café on the Barbican. She has worked as a waitress since she was 15-years-old and in that time, she has experienced a broad range of dining styles - a five-star restaurant, a pub, and an American diner. Bethany is now taking her career to the next level, formalising what she loves doing with on-the-job-training and qualifications.

“I love what I do, particularly meeting different people and getting to know their stories,” said Bethany. “Being an apprentice is the perfect solution; as well as earning a wage I am studying for a Level 3 qualification, which is going to help me progress my career.

“At the moment I am learning how to do the books and look after customers. I’ve done my first close down, which involved cashing up and locking up.

“Because I’m learning as I’m working, I am picking it up really quickly and when I qualify at the end of this year I will already have hands-on management experience.

I want to take my skills and travel around the world;

“City College has been fantastic in supporting me,” Bethany continued. “In fact, it was working at a college function day being held at the Boathouse Café that got me the job. As well as visiting me at the Café, my assessors always come and see me when I am at the College - I attend for maths and English sessions or to help out in the PL1 Restaurant. They are always at the end of the phone and if I need to talk, they listen and give me sound advice.

“I am very lucky because I also get great support from the team at The Boathouse Café, who are teaching me everything they know. It is a real family atmosphere and after we close for the day we all go off and have a game of pool together!”

Boathouse Café manager, Charlie, said: “Last April, The Boathouse Café hosted the Trans-Atlantic Boat Race. This attracted sailors and other visitors from all

over the world. City College volunteered their students to host and cook for the guests. As a result, I got to see how everyone worked, including who was keen and interested in how the business works! Beth was motivated, hardworking and keen to learn. These fundamental skills are all one needs to succeed in this industry. From that moment on I was eager to have her as part of my team.

“Training apprentices is a great way of attracting enthusiastic talent, who are keen to put forward and try fresh ideas. Beth is one of those people who continues to write down ideas and bring them to meetings. It encourages other staff to think ‘out of the box’ and bring something unique to the team.

“Hiring Beth as an apprentice has helped me reduce staff turnover because she has become very loyal to the business and is willing to come in when required. This helps me fill in gaps in the rota and fulfil the business needs on a day-to-day basis.”

Celebration in Devonport Park The fifth anniversary of the new bandstand at Devonport Park will be celebrated with a special event at the end of August.

The Friends of Devonport Park have set the date for Sunday August 27 and there will be live music on the bandstand from 12 noon to 5pm featuring the Hot Club of Stonehouse, Mariners Away and the Queen’s Dock Ukelele Players There will also be bouncy castles, face painting, stalls, plant sales and delicious refreshments.

A spokesperson for the Friends said: “There was originally doubt as to whether or not it was a waste of money to re-establish such a feature in the park and yet

the Friends have proved its worth over the last five years by putting on regular Sunday summer events.

“These have attracted a large following based in the communities surrounding the park and demonstrate that there is a huge appetite for chilling out to great local bands in a gorgeous setting.”

Residents are invited to soak up the early summer splendour of Plymouth’s oldest and most beautiful park and admire the tireless efforts of our volunteer gardening group.

The event on August 27 is completely free but all proceeds from Friends stalls go to continuing their work in the park and putting on such events as these.

Golfers putt in a great performance for charity Golfers raised a bumper £1700 for two Plymouth charities following the success of an annual tournament organised by a city based organisation of property professionals.

Yelverton Golf Club hosted the event staged by the Plymouth Area Property Professionals Association (PAPPA), an elite group of fully accredited property experts with more than 500 years’ combined industry experience.

In a closely fought contest between 13 teams made up of property industry colleagues and clients, it was PAPPA members Stratton Creber Commercial, who came out on top in the tournament, held in aid of Shekinah Mission and Horizons Plymouth.

Darren Lawson, of fellow PAPPA members Mansbridge Balment Plymouth, was also on a winning streak himself scooping two prizes in the raffle – a meal for two at the city’s Duke of Cornwall Hotel and an electric golf trolley.

Horizons Plymouth is a sailing charity formed to help disadvantaged and disabled children from the inner city communities in Plymouth get involved in water based activities.

City law firm supports the Drake Foundation Law firm Bond Dickinson gave its services pro-bono to the Plymouth Drake Foundation, a local charity committed to developing wealthy, healthy and lively communities in the city of Plymouth.

Solicitor Krista McCarthy (pictured right) acted on behalf of the Plymouth Drake Foundation to help secure a lease on 15 Radford Park Road, Plymstock, which will be used as a charity shop. Bond Dickinson advised on all aspects of the transaction, negotiating the new lease, handling commercial property standard enquiries and dealing with completion and post completion formalities.

The Plymouth Drake Foundation supports local communities by providing grants to Plymouth’s voluntary sector as well as funding charities, community groups and social enterprises. Parents, relatives, colleagues and friends watched on with enormous pride as nine equally proud interns, graduated recently from Project SEARCH Derriford, following nine months of intensive work-based training, gaining Diplomas in Progression.

Project SEARCH is a partnership between Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust, Pluss, Serco and City College Plymouth who work together to create employment opportunities for young adults living in Plymouth who have learning disabilities.

The interns, all of whom have learning disabilities, have been working in Derriford Hospital on honorary contracts, whilst developing and learning new work skills.

With these nine interns graduating from the most recent cohort, this now brings the overall number of interns to have graduated from the initiative to more than 60 in the last seven years. In addition to this, four of this year’s graduates have secured employment.

At a special ceremony held at the Derriford Centre for Health and Wellbeing, the students and their guests heard about the various internships the interns had undertaken, their experiences and the skills and confidence they had acquired from their time working within the hospital.

Describing her time at Project SEARCH, graduate intern, Georgina Clements, who has worked within the laboratories in the hospital, said: “Project SEARCH has given me the experience of working in environments that I wouldn’t have been able to do otherwise. It’s given me confidence and shown me I can do more than I thought I could do.” of City College Plymouth, serving tea, coffee and cakes baked and prepared by the students.

Steven Keith, director of people for Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust, presented the certificates at the ceremony.

Steven said: “There are four words I would use to describe the interns, they are: pride, passion, skills and confidence.

“All the interns clearly demonstrate pride and passion for the work they have been undertaking in the hospital, and we have heard a number of examples of how their confidence and skills have grown hugely as a result of being part of this scheme.”

The interns are well supported as they now look for paid employment, something that is important to all of them.

The Project has an enviable success rate with 72% of interns from the first six years achieving competitive paid employment.

“Having paid work means it finally feels like I can stand on my own two feet and I don’t have to rely on others,” explains Kristian Euinton. “I can pay my own way and not have to rely on benefits. Project SEARCH has changed my life for the better.”

Project SEARCH supports young adults, between 18 and 24, living in Plymouth with learning disabilities by providing a Level 1 academic course running alongside three internships within Derriford Hospital.

It is a partnership that provides real work experience based in Derriford Hospital where interns learn the skills that all employers need together with specific skills for individual jobs.

Tributes paid as Stoke postmistress SAVE UP TO £200 ON WHIRLPOOL Jenny Clarke decides to call it a day APPLIANCES degeneration, – but are obviously saddened by the closure of Stoke Village Post Office.

Sometimes local heroes are remembered for one off acts of extreme bravery or selflessness, writes Karen Pilkington.

Jenny is still looking for someone to take it on, but to date no one has come forward.

Other times they are just part of the community that keeps going despite all the trials of life. These heroes are so much part of the fabric of our life, that they occasionally get over looked.

Trish Weaver, who has been working on and off in the shop part of the Post Office wanted to say, “Thank you, Jenny, for being a really good friend as well as employer.”

However the Stoke Traders and Residents group, Stoke STaRS, have come together, determined that this will not happen to local hero, businesswoman, and vital member of the Stoke Village community for over four decades – Mrs Jenny Clarke.

In those days the local Post Office was the hub of some much activity, everything from TV licences to pensions to dog licences to benefits.

Many vulnerable people were used to visiting their post office on a weekly basis, and would have got to know the people working there very well.

Jenny, who had been both a nurse and midwife in a former life, had a way about

Other tributes are still being paid to Jenny. Steve Bowen, chairman of Stoke STaRS said: “Jenny was the first person to welcome me when I arrived in the Village four years ago, and remains my mentor to be a better person; thoughtful towards others and caring. “

Jenny has been Postmistress in the village for an incredible 42 years, taking on the business with her husband Peter in the 1970’s. As was the norm with small businesses like these, they moved in over the shop, and brought up their daughter, Ursula, upstairs.

Life would have been full on combining business and family on the premises, and Peter and Jenny would have been on hand at all hours, dealing with the problems and queries of local people.

Local resident Steve Kelly added: “Jenny’s experience and personal manner will be very hard to replace. We all wish her a very happy retirement. But hope she still remains a part of Stoke village life.”

The strong work ethic embodied in the family household has passed onto Jenny’s grandchildren John and Sophie, whom she is very proud of as they advance in their chosen professions.

Jenny sadly lost her husband in 2000, but continued her work in Stoke Village with the companionship of her dogs. She was an avid user of the Blockhouse Park to

walk her dogs three times a day.

Locals will remember her Springer Spaniel Jay, who passed away recently, and Teddy, her Shih Tzu who still loves to trot around the park owning all he surveys.

The staff in the Post Office and shop, past and present, will miss her greatly.

More walks and exhibitions at Ford Park There’s just a few days left to visit the exhibition ‘Ford Park Cemetery Then and Now’ as it will close on Sunday August 6.

The exhibition is open for public viewing on Tuesdays and Thursdays between 10.30am and 3.30pm and Saturdays and Sundays from 12.30pm to 3.30pm. Refreshments are available from the Visitor centre cafe at these times.

A free afternoon walk entitled ‘Notable Women’ is taking place on Sunday August 20 at 2pm, organised by Ford Park Cemetery’s Heritage team. They will visit the graves and give information about accomplished women buried at Ford Park, such as surgeon and suffragist Mabel Ramsay.

Other women involved in notable events will also be included. The walk will last approximately an hour and a half. Please wear sensible footwear as some of the paths are uneven.

Ford Park Cemetery’s next exhibition ‘Plymouth Then and Now’ opens for public viewing on Saturday August 26 and runs until Sunday November 19.

Members of the Heritage team have been busy with their cameras for this exhibition, showing how areas of the city have changed over the years.

Go along, have a coffee, walk down memory lane, and see how much you can remember.

The exhibition is free of charge (donations welcome) and is open Tuesdays and Thursdays between 10.30am and 3.30pm and Saturdays and Sundays from 12.30pm to 3.30pm.

Bat and Moth Walk On Friday September 1 at 7.30pm, everyone is invited to Ford Park for a fun and informative evening, learning more about the moths and bats found in the cemetery.

The Devon Bat group will lead a Bat walk, followed by the opportunity to observe moths as they arrive at light traps set around the grounds. Please bring a torch.

Refreshments will be available in the Visitor Centre throughout the evening.

On Sunday September 3 members of the Heritage team will be heading a guided walk in conjunction with the ‘Plymouth Then and Now’ exhibition, leaving from the Visitor Centre at 2pm. The walk is free of charge (donations welcome).

Professor’s charity effort in aid of brain tumour research Professor David Parkinson, a neuroscientist from the University of Plymouth, is in training for a gruelling 100-mile cycle ride to raise funds for research to find a cure for brain tumours and other tumours of the nervous system.

A keen cyclist, Professor Parkinson is using this challenge to celebrate his 10year anniversary working within the internationally-recognised specialist brain and nervous system tumour research at the University. He aims to raise at least £500 for pioneering charity Brain Tumour Research, which supports the team.

Brain tumours kill more children and adults under the age of 40 than any other cancer but just 1% of the national spend on cancer research has been allocated to this devastating disease. The charity is striving to fund a network of seven dedicated research centres whilst challenging the government and larger cancer charities to invest more in brain tumour research.

Professor Parkinson is among 24 cyclists supporting Brain Tumour Research by taking part in Prudential RideLondon, described as “the world’s greatest festival of cycling.”

Some 25,000 are expected for the RideLondon-Surrey from 9am to 9.45am. Parent/carer toddler sessions open to all ages crawling to four years. £3.50. New moves to tackle anti-social behaviour in Stonehouse area Plymouth City Council is set to help tackle anti-social behaviour in Stonehouse by introducing a Public Space Protection Order (PSPO).

PSPOs give police and enforcement officials special powers designed to rid the area of antisocial drinking, drug use and begging in public areas.

Those found in breach of the order will be placed on the antisocial behaviour escalation process, a system that ensures repeat offenders may face prosecution or will be dealt with via other interventions.

Stonehouse has a very strong community spirit and is a very proud community and following extensive dialogue with the Stonehouse Working Group, a number of measures could now be put in place to ensure it is a safer place for both residents and local businesses.

A consultation period has now started and will last for four weeks. Residents are being encouraged to share their views on the scheme.

Cllr David Downie, Cabinet member for Safer and Stronger Communities said: “I am delighted to support this order for Stonehouse. The people of this community have suffered for too long and I strongly believe that this action will ensure that they can again take pride in their area.”

Acting Inspector Dominic Nicholls of Devon and Cornwall Police said: “The introduction of a PSPO in Stonehouse shows real intent that the police and Plymouth City Council will always work together to take positive action against antisocial behaviour.

“We genuinely recognise the impact, persistent anti-social behaviour has on communities such as Stonehouse and we’re determined to send a clear message to say this behaviour will not be tolerated.”

PSPOs can only be issued by local authorities and replace the Designated Public Place Order and Gating Orders. They give the police and Local Authority additional powers to clamp down on anti-social behaviour

• Preventing the drinking of alcohol and drug use in a public place • Surrendering an open vessel(s) of alcohol in a public place when requested to by an authorised officer • Approaching members of the public for money in any public place, street, highway or passage to include private residences • Begging on the ground in a public place, street, highway or passage • Urinating or defecating in a public place • Displaying any form of sign associated with begging.

• Nuisance drivers The boundary of the PSPO will run from the junction between Western Approach and Union Street, heading north along Western Approach. It will include the Western side of the road, continuing left at North Cross roundabout along the western side of Saltash Road before following the railway line past the bowling green to the Northern Edge of Victoria Park.

It then travels down Eldad Hill to the junction with the southern edge of the park and continues along the park until Stonehouse Roundabout.

It continues southward at the roundabout and follows the water line until Eastern King Point where it travels Eastward to Millbay Pier. It then travels North Easterly, omitting Trinity Pier across Millbay Road to the junction with Union Street before meeting the junction between Western Approach and Union Street.

Antisocial behaviour significantly impacts people’s quality of life.

City centre shops have been given a facelift as part of a pilot scheme run by Plymouth City Council and the City Centre Company.

Five businesses have so far had their shop fronts upgraded as part of the Shop Front Improvement Grant Scheme, following the successful renewal of the City Centre Business Improvement District.

The shop front scheme aims to support businesses to transform the front of their property to make them more attractive and welcoming for shoppers.

The scheme was set out in the City Centre Company’s 2015 to 2020 business plan and the Council agreed to a pot of funding to support the scheme.

Businesses submitted an application for a grant to a reviewing panel made up of City Centre Company and Council representatives and as part of this process, had to provide detailed drawings of the works they were hoping to carry out.

Council leader Ian Bowyer said: “Our city centre is hugely important to Plymouth. We want all our businesses to make a good impression so that people feel welcome and comfortable spending their hard earned money in these city centre shops. This is about making sure one of our key economic growth areas is selling the city – to visitors and residents.”

‘Emotional’ school return for Marshall’s partner as Family Day raises more than £2,000 Marshall was very emotional,” said Elley. “Although it’s been three years it felt as though I had never left.

A family day at the former school of one of the victims of a devastating crash on the A38 in June has raised more than £2,000.

“Everyone was still so welcoming, very loving and fun.

“What an amazing community they are to come together as well as they did.

“I couldn’t thank everyone at Stoke Damerel enough for all their love and support through this hard time.

Marshall died when his van overturned on the A38 last month - the crash also claimed the lives of his two workmates Zachary Graham and Trevor Gorman.

Marshall’s partner Elley Taylor, who met Marshall at Stoke Damerel, came to the event with the couple’s four-month-old Isla.

The five completed shop fronts are: Jakes’ Café on Cornwall Street. Part of the city centre café scene for years, its frontage onto Cornwall Street had suffered wear and tear. The owners wanted to refresh the front and give it a new lease of life. They also wanted support installing ventilation and sliding windows to help the air flow through the café in the summer.

Bonmarche, the value women’s wear retailer in New George Street had a dated shop front and wanted to ensure the shop entrance was as safe as possible. They replaced the existing tiling with a non-slip substitute.

The Cutting Garden in Mayflower Street wanted a more professional feel to their shop front. They worked with an independent designer to rebrand their business, which, with the support of the grant, is now reflected in their stylish new shop front.

Oggy Oggy Pasty on Armada Way. The pasty company moved to an empty unit on Armada Way backing on to the new coach station. The scheme supported the business to design and deliver a very recognisable shop front.

Plymouth Fancy Dress. The fancy dress shop in the Armada Centre wanted a shop front as bright and vibrant as the costumes they sell.

Contemporary success

Deputy vice principal Jo Ware, who teaches two of Marshall’s brothers Mitchell and Morgan, explained the idea for the Family Day came about the day after the news of the terrible crash.

“I was teaching my Year 11 English class and we decided then and there to organise an event to show the College’s support for the family,” said Mrs Ware.

More than 40 artists from across the world had their work selected to feature in the dual-site exhibition, which opened recently.

“It went even better than we could have hoped and the students were very respectful and mindful of what the day was about.

They are now on display at the University of Plymouth’s Peninsula Arts Gallery and at KARST’s gallery space in Stonehouse until Saturday September 2.

“We are extremely grateful to all the staff who worked so hard to put the day together so quickly and to Argyle for their support too.”

The 2017 Plymouth Contemporary is a partnership between Peninsula Arts at the University of Plymouth, the Plymouth History Centre and KARST, and artists and curators were invited to develop work within the theme of ‘visions’, exploring what the concept might mean now.

“Obviously we would rather that we hadn’t had to hold it at all,” said Paige.

More than 800 submissions were received from 26 countries as far afield as New Zealand, South Africa, Argentina and the USA and comprised a wide range of interpretations of that topic.

They focussed on themes from architecture and archaeology to war zones and nuclear survival, using an array of media from installations and sculpture, to film, painting and live performance.

Community support for Devonport Live The Devonport Live Café and Meeting Rooms in George Street, Devonport is much more than a hub for all members of the community.

It has pioneered the Pay it Forwards Scheme, now adopted by many local retailers, where customers can choose to pay extra for their own meal, enabling someone to have a coffee or meal at their expense who is not able to pay for it at the time.

It’s a scheme not just benefitting people struggling to make ends meet, or looking for a cosy place to warm up with a cuppa if they haven’ got a home to go to, but also great for busy mums who come out without their purse!

So it was particularly disheartening for café manager, Sarah Brown to discover just over a month ago that they had been the victims of a burglary, resulting in a broken window, the theft of the till, and the safe literally ripped out from the way.

was in real jeopardy,” explained Sarah.

“However we have been amazed at how the local community has pulled together to help us. Alarm South West donated a new alarm system; we had two donations from individuals of £100 each; and one particular donation that really touched my heart.”

Sarah went on to tell the story of a homeless man whom she had been able to give some bedding to – by nipping home and taking a quilt out of her own cupboard no less!

That same man came in with £4 to give to the café to help replenish its funds, saying that they needed it more than he did.

There are many more stories like this that epitomize the ethos of this amazing venture, which also hosts many community meetings, toddler groups, arts and crafts sessions and film events.

“One of our customers explained that it was this place that encouraged her to relocate to Devonport from up country,” said Sarah.

“She was sitting in our outside seating area having a cup of coffee whilst visiting her daughter when a young man strode up purposefully. As he was covered in tattoos and piercings he looked a little formidable to the older lady, but when he gave her the paper he had finished reading, she was blown away by the friendly gesture – not being like anything she was used to up North.

“She has since become a regular customer, saying that her move to the area has been like coming home!”

Sarah added: “ We so appreciate all of our customers and thank everyone for their support and kindness. “ As well as the kind hearted locals, Sarah and her team need to take some credit for the warmth of this community hub in the heart of Devonport. Her breakfasts have become legendary, attracting builders from far and wide looking to refuel without paying out a fortune.

And it takes all her team working flat out to meet the demand of the busy lunch time period.

Community groups get together to raise funds for defibrillator Story and photos

Two community groups in Devonport have joined together to raise £1,500 to install a defibrillator in Devonport Park.

They are looking to install it by working with the local HeartSWell charity. The Friends of Devonport Park joined the Real Friends Social and Community Group to put on a day of entertainment at the park’s Bandstand.

A defibrillator is a machine which restarts the heart in the event of a cardiac arrest. If used correctly, they save lives, especially when emergency service response times are longer. The events also hoped to raise funds for a hearing loop for the Pavilion and improvements to the acoustics to the community room. As usual in park events, the Pavilion Cafe also helped in the organisation.

Stalls, bouncy castles, archery and refreshments all added to the community atmosphere.

Over at the Soapbox Theatre, Jaqueline Slade told the audience of children a scary story of a tailor and a huge spider in the woods. They lapped it up.

Martin Stevens, who runs the Pavilions community cafe told the Shopper that the various groups pulling together adding: “A real sign of the whole community working together for the common good. As a business operator it was good to see.”

There will be training sessions for the various groups which use the community facility and Martin promised that the Pavilion Cafe’s Facebook page would carry details. Martin continued: “Even the dog walkers have had a collection box of their own. I am pleased to thank Mike Gallagher of the Friends of Devonport Park and Priscilla Carroll and the Real Friends community group for coming

together to work on this project.”

Priscilla Carroll added: “A big thank you to the Blase Blues band, Lipstick & Lashes, B Harmony, Time & Motion and AJ Sounds who gave their time and created such a wonderful atmosphere with their music.

“Also thank you to the public, the dog walkers, various bowling teams that use the park, Stiltskin, the children’s Soapbox Theatre and all the voluntary helpers who supported this event to help us raise funds for defribillators for Devonport park. It is a community that came together for a brilliant cause.”

HeartSWell provides defibrillators across Devon and Cornwall to communities who need them.

Their first defibrillator was donated in 2014 to the Elfordleigh Hotel and Golf Club. Since then they have donated over 70 defibrillators to church halls, Masonic lodges, businesses, sports and fitness clubs and schools.

The charity provide training to staff, club

members, churchwardens, teachers and pupils so that as many people as possible are confident in using the equipment and have increased knowledge of first aid, especially in recognising the early signs of a heart attack.

HeartSWell delivered training to 1,077 people between 2014 and March 2017.

Each defibrillator costs £1,500 and the charity are fortunate that the programme (including the specialist training on how to use the equipment) is run entirely by volunteers which keeps the overheads to a minimum.

HeartSWell ask that community, public sector and not for profit groups raise a minimum of £500 in advance of receiving a defibrillator.

Once the defibrillator is installed, the charity ask that all groups undertake fundraising activities to at least match or exceed the cost of their defibrillator.

This is so they can continue to provide defibrillators to those who need them most, regardless of their ability to fundraise.

Crowds flock to St Levan Fun Day

Volunteers from St Levan Neighbourhood Watch Scheme hosted their popular annual family fun day in July.

When formed, 10 years ago, one of the objectives was to improve the poor condition of St Levan Park making it more attractive and accessible to everyone.

The Neighbourhood Policing Team included police cadets and police dogs who brought along their handlers, too. Camels Head arranged for a fire tender and crew to attend.

“When we began, we could only dream of holding such an event and here we are hosting our sixth fun day‚“ said one of the volunteers, Judith Hosking.

The afternoon of fun began following the joint opening by local councillor, Mike Sparling, newly elected MP, Luke Pollard and Shadow Defence Secretary, Nia Griffith MP.

“On behalf of our Scheme, I would like to thank everyone involved in our preparations, those who helped us out on

the day, all participants and everyone who came along to give us a great party atmosphere in a lovely setting,” said Judith.

“Every penny raised will go toward future events and the production of our regular newsletter which we deliver to some 600 homes.”

Currently, St Levan Park Neighbourhood Watch Scheme is looking for volunteers to join the group; particularly residents of Glenmore Avenue, Balmoral Avenue, Ryder Road and St Levan Road (from the viaduct to Ryder Road) in addition to anyone residing in the roads between Ryder Road to St Vincent Street.

Skype’s the limit as students quiz new MP Students at a Plymouth secondary school have been given the chance to quiz their new MP via Skype.

Luke Pollard, recently elected as MP for Plymouth Sutton and Devonport, was unable to attend the Democracy Q and A session on the Alternative School Day being run at Stoke Damerel Community College in person because of his Westminster commitments.

Instead he took questions for 40 minutes via Skype from Year 9 students on a variety of subjects from Brexit to the Mayflower 400 celebrations.

Student Caleb Walker, who asked the final question, said it was a ‘great experience’.

“He wasn’t like I thought an MP would be and being able to ask him questions which he answered right away was brilliant.

“It was really inspiring – we are the next generation of voters and, who knows, even MPs.” Luke Pollard said: “It was great to see so many young people passionate about their city and their future.

“I want young people to be front and centre of my campaigns as an MP and it reminded me that there’s so much enthusiasm from young people for politics.”

Picnic Proms delight An exhilarating evening of entertainment took place at Plymouth Guildhall as over 70 singers, musicians and dancers took to the stage for the Plymouth Picnic Proms hosted by the Plymouth Phoenix Chorale.

A packed audience feasted on picnics and enjoyed a glass of wine, in what is fast becoming a popular tradition established over recent Phoenix summer concerts.

The wide-ranging music comprised various midsummer pieces, one composed by local composer Tyrell, especially for Plymouth Phoenix Chorale. Chilcott’s rhythmic Ophelia, Caliban, and Miranda, introduced the first of several very enjoyable works on a jazz theme and included sublime saxophone solos from Andy Williamson.

The theme was continued with a flawless performance of Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue by Mark Smith and a couple of mellow Billy Strayhorn solos from Andy Williamson.

The first half of the concert concluded with the choir’s very entertaining presentation of a medley of music from Porgy and Bess, again brilliantly enhanced with some funky saxophone improvisation. Both Porgy and Bess and the Chilcott were further embellished by the SpinDrift Dance Collective who added their own dynamic interpretation of the music.

Plymouth dental experts heading for the Philippines Two dental experts from Plymouth University Peninsula School of Dentistry are to join a small team of professionals volunteering for Dentaid, to bring oral health care, treatments and information to one of the poorest cities in the Philippines.

“Our mission with Dentaid is to get all the school children dentally fit,” said Ruth. “We’ll do this by offering pain relief treatments where necessary and fluoride varnish for all the children.”

Robert Witton and Ruth Potterton will join the Dentaid team, which itself will be part of a wider grouping of relief teams who will be working together across a range of activities, including teaching English, IT, community support training and rebuilding following earthquakes, fires and typhoon damage in Mandaue City on the island of Cebu.

A local dentist will be helping with the mission and will work alongside local dental students from the dental school in Cebu and the Dentaid team to provide a Dental Treatment Centre while construction work takes place.

The operation and project activities will be based around Umapad Elementary School. The school is public-funded with approximately 1100 children of whom the majority are extremely poor. The school offers education to a group termed “scavenger children”, who live in and around the city’s dump sites and who earn a living recycling other people’s waste into money.

Robert added: “As well as oral treatments, we will also be providing lots of oral health education for the children and their teachers in addition to setting up a school tooth brushing programme.”

Professor Christopher Tredwin, head of Plymouth University Peninsula School of Dentistry, commented: “We are extremely proud of Ruth and Rob for their contribution to this initiative.

“Their skills and expertise will be invaluable not only in ensuring that local children get dental treatment, but also that they and their teachers are provided with the information and knowledge needed to maintain a healthy mouth.”

Theatre Royal First World War project nominated for award A project involving Theatre Royal Plymouth to mark the centenary of the Battle of the Somme has been nominated for an award.

‘We’re here because we’re here’, the modern memorial created by Turner Prize-winning artist Jeremy Deller to mark the centenary of the Battle of the Somme, has been nominated for a prestigious National Lottery Award.

‘We’re here because we’re here’ left a lasting impression on millions of people in the UK and humanised the great loss of life in the First World War. The public are invited to vote for the project, which is nominated for the ‘Best Heritage Project’ award.

Theatre Royal Plymouth was one of 26 organisations across the UK who collaborated on the project with 14-18 NOW – the UK’s arts programme for the First World War centenary. We’re here because we’re here saw nearly 1500 voluntary participants dressed in First World War uniform appear unexpectedly in locations across the UK. The work was experienced by over 30 million people.

The participants who walked the streets were a reminder of the 19,240 men who were killed on 1 July 1916, the first day of the Battle of the Somme.

As well as having a profound and moving effect on the public, the work had a huge impact on the participants involved. These volunteers were men aged between 1652, reflecting the ages of men who would have fought in the Somme. They were not trained actors but came from

a range of professions, including a sheep farmer, flight attendant, doctor, lawyer, social worker, shop assistant, portrait artist and GCSE student.

They came together to rehearse in theatres across the UK over a month-long period in the run-up to the performance. Many of the men are still friends today.

James Elston, a participant of the project said: “Being part of this national memorial to mark the 100th anniversary of the Somme was an honourable moment for me.

Soap Box loo-king forward to a new era of cleanliness!

The adage, ‘The show must go on!’ was never truer than at a recent run of performances by Stiltskin, the Children’s Theatre and Arts Company, of their unique retelling for all the family of the Brothers Grimm fairy tale, Rumpelstiltskin.

Having worked all afternoon sorting out technical issues before the evening show on July 8, they staggered into the sunshine outside, only to discover that someone had thoughtlessly pushed over and broken the toilet outside the building.

There has been a temporary toilet outside the Soap Box Theatre in Devonport Park now since its beginnings, whilst the intrepid Stiltskin

Arts & Theatre CIC have been raising money to design and build a new wheelchair friendly entrance, complete with toilet facilities for their building.

“As you can imagine,” said Iain Slade, director of the company, “it was not pretty, and meant we had to postpone that evening’s performance whilst we sourced a new toilet facility.”

However, with typical energy and determination, the show did go on, to the delight of packed out audiences in July.

Stiltskin recently won the title of Best Independent Theatre 2017 from the Muddy Stilettos Devon Awards, beating off stiff competition by much bigger and better funded organisations.

And, having now raised the funds through

a successful Crowdfunder to build the new entrance and toilets, this incident has just increased the demand to see the planning permission come through quickly and building work to begin.

Stiltskin’s projects aim to raise aspirations, help children gain and build confidence and are accessible to all. They¬†encourage social inclusion giving children a voice and broadening their horizons. They are passionate about children experiencing cultural opportunities and seek innovative ways of making this happen.

China research project for Plymouth academic He said: “It’s obviously fantastic to have been invited to this role, and the visits I’ve undertaken have already shown there’s a lot of potential for brilliant research projects. I feel very lucky to have been taken on by the Chinese Government and I will certainly apply a lot of what we encourage here at the Clinical Schools.”

An academic from the University of Plymouth has been invited to develop research in China’s largest children’s hospital – making him the first nurse to be appointed through a Chinese Government programme.

Professor Latour first visited China in 2009 when he delivered a talk on family-centred care at Hunan Children’s Hospital in Changsha, from where he was invited back for their annual congresses.

Jos Latour, Professor in Clinical Nursing, was appointed as an advisor to Hunan Children’s Hospital in China this year thanks to the country’s 100 Talent Programme, which enables companies to recruit external experts to boost output.

He was then invited to Hunan Children’s Hospital through the Hunan Province 100 Talent Programme, and his current three-year contract came from national funding as a result of his success.

Youngsters encouraged to join Summer Reading Challenge Libraries in Plymouth are inviting children to sign up to this year’s Summer Reading Challenge and help the Animal Agents solve a mystery.

Children can visit their local library and register for free. Every child who signs up will be given a special collector folder to keep track of their challenge reading journey.

Children are asked to read six books over the holiday and tell library staff about them. They can be any books they like – novels, fact books, joke books, eBooks and audiobooks all count, just as long as they are borrowed from the library. Along the way there are special cards to collect that make up a set to complete their folder. There are also prizes and every child who completes the challenge will be presented with a medal at their library and a certificate during their school assembly.

It’s free to join and libraries want to make sure that everyone who wants to take part is given the opportunity. If it’s been

a while since your children visited or they have outstanding books or fines, go along to your local library who will be able to help.

Councillor Glenn Jordan, Cabinet Member for Culture said “The Summer Reading Challenge is always popular – over 4,200 took part last year. It’s a great way to get children reading during the summer holiday and help build and maintain their reading skills and confidence.” Libraries will be hosting free activities throughout the summer including stories, crafts, films and coding. Popular Disney show at Devonport DJR School of Performing Arts will perform the Plymouth premiere of ‘Disney’s ‘Mulan Jr’. at the Devonport Playhouse from October 26 to 28 nightly at 7.30pm with a Saturday matinee at 3pm.

The production will star Shannah Russell as Mulan, Josh Hansell-Wright as Captain Shang, Summer Nelson as Mushu, the dragon, Chris Jewell, Ethan Jewell, Sophie Bazeley, Rhys Greenfield and Naomi Tuisawau as the Ancestors.

Helping your friends The Government and Bank of England are worried about your friends.

You might be able to put their minds at rest, and help your friends at the same time.

The issue The authorities are getting concerned about the rate of growth in consumer credit. Car loans, credit card debt and unsecured loans are increasing at an alarming rate. The BoE ‘s latest Financial Stability Report reveals an increase in consumer credit of over 10.3% within the last 12 months. Income has grown by just 1% of the same period.

Mortgage lending has reached 101% of household income, which means as a country we owe more to the mortgage companies than we earn in a year.

The real problem is that the debt has grown in a period of unsustainably low interest rates, and these are expected to return to normal levels, starting in late 2017.

This will put a huge burden on the income of those who’ve borrowed so much.

So how can we help?

The biggest step in clearing your problem debts, is admitting that there is a problem. This is where you can help your friends.

Struggling with debt is a lonely place. Feelings of inadequacy, guilt, and shame might prevent someone from sharing the situation; this is where you come in.

If you can see some of the following signs, you may be able to start a conversation over financial difficulties, allowing your friend(s) to admit their need of help.

What should we be looking for?

Some or all of the following factors may be present. If you see a picture building up, now would be a great time to ask your friends those questions that only good friends can ask.

Cutting back on social activities One of the ways to hide your financial difficulties is to stop going out with friends. If one of your pals has suddenly started making excuses, leaving early or claiming to have started a new (low cost) lifestyle, this could be a sign that they’re struggling.

Using public transport Running a car is expensive.

Public transport is generally cheaper, but less reliable. If a friend starts travelling by bus, especially in an area where public transport is less accessible, this could be a sign of financial difficulty.

Drinking tap water Tap water is usually free. They may still meet with you, but they choose low or nil cost options.

Look out for a change in dietary practice or drink of choice.

Perhaps your friend is trying to maintain links at the lowest possible cost.

Weight loss One easy way to spend less, is to buy less food. This could

be covered up by claiming to have started a diet, but it could easily be down to a lack of food.

Especially if your friend has no need to diet. Equally, this could be a sign of depression, caused by worries over paying their bills.

If they look tired, complain of difficulty sleeping, this should warn you of problems.

Unopened bills If you notice unopened post when you visit, this is an obvious sign of a problem. Many of us can pretend nothing’s wrong if we avoid the letters that tell us otherwise. The same could be true if they refuse to answer their phone, or at the extreme, don’t answer knocks at their door.

A recent change in circumstances Major life changes can impose sudden changes on family finances. Divorce, death or redundancy are obvious examples, but what about children leaving home (loss of benefits), or heading to University (increased financial commitments).

Breaking the taboo The British seem to talk freely about everything, except money.

It was once considered vulgar to flaunt one’s wealth. In the modern, post-credit crunch world, this translates into a reticence to share one’s difficulties. So, how can you broach the subject?

It helps if you are struggling yourself. It is much easier to get a friend to talk if you have demonstrated vulnerability with

the same issue. The chances are someone you know has a debt problem, or had a problem with debt. Since 2008/9 many thousands of UK residents have been forced into debt management plans, so the chances are you know someone who’s been through one.

You could open a discussion about someone you know, or your own experiences if relevant.

Remember to concentrate on the positives, as this will encourage your friend to open up. Highlighting the problems will only enforce the desire to avoid the issue.

The direct approach doesn’t usually work, unless you are very good friends, and have that pattern well established in your relationship.

So, if you see signs of financial distress, find a gentle way to open a discussion, and give your friend every encouragement to take the biggest step to sorting it out, and clearing the way for a brighter future; admitting the present is not so great!

Michelle plays key role in Victoria Park makeover Michelle Quintrell is a remarkable woman who sees the best in every situation.

Having put up with more than her fair share of ill health, which eventually caused her to have to quit her job as a teaching assistant at Stuart Road Primary School, she has not let this massive, unexpected life change drag her down.

Although living opposite Victoria Road Park for many years she was not quick to get on the bandwagon of park improvement that is fast becoming a buzz word for the trendy.

Michelle was happy to get on with everyday life and although appreciating the park, was not really in the habit of using it since her children had become teenagers.

“It was only when they started asking me could they go to a different park quite a way away, that I began to ask the question, what was wrong with ours,” explained Michelle.

“I then took a look around to discover that Victoria Park had suffered from years of neglect, and was in quite a bad state with lots of graffiti and rubbish, as well as real misuse going on right under our noses!

“I was advised to contact Caroline Fiske from Plymouth City Council, who did a ‘sweep’ of the park with me, and who encouraged me to advertise a meeting for local residents. Both the council and the local residents have been amazingly supportive ever since.

“Our park is a real magnet for dog owners and their families, especially now that we have our very own dog friendly Park Pavilion Café. Our event celebrated just how dear our pets are to us and provided lots of fun and entertainment too.”

“I had no experience of doing anything like this before, but I did have time on my hands which I wasn’t used to, so took the plunge. I was amazed to see over 35 people turn up for the first meeting, just over a year ago now and found myself being elected as Chair of the Victoria Park Community Project.

The Victoria Park Community Project has a distinct bias towards improving the park.

Several members have limited mobility and disability, so as well as the usual wish list of regular litter picks and better bins, the group want to see raised flowerbeds and specialised picnic benches suitable for wheelchair users.

“Since then we have had monthly meetings as well as some events, which are creating quite a stir, especially amongst the dog loving world.

The topography of the park really benefits disabled and non disabled users as it is flat, with easy access and parking, and could become a haven in the city for inclusivity.

The gorup’s latest event, Bark in the Park, took place in July and was a great success.

Michelle said: “We had a full day of stalls and stands, dog show, treasure hunt, special doggy fancy dress and a fantastic Agility For Dummies where dogs and handlers enjoyed a light-hearted take on getting around an obstacle course. The event raised £720 which will go right back into our funds for further events and improvements.

“It is also a haven for wildlife, which is being encouraged by the project who are raising money for bird boxes and bat boxes as well.

“All monies raised by our events are ploughed back into improving the park for everyone,” added Michelle, “And we welcome any offers of support.”

On a recent day trip to Cornwall I was struck by the number of tourists visiting the area.

We all know that July and August is tourist season as people from all across the UK head down the A38 for their summer holidays. Very often locals can take a dim view of this influx of visitors and it is easy to look forward to September when the crowds diminish.

Rather than annoyance I could not help but be struck by just how blessed I am to live in this part of the world. Being able to head down for an afternoon to a location that people travel several hours to visit is something that should not be taken for granted.

It is easy to see why people visit this area in their droves each year. From our stunning coastline and beautiful sandy beaches to the rugged moorland and lush green fields that surround us here in Plymouth, it truly is a special place.

They say ‘beauty is in the eye of the beholder’ but evidently there is something

The recognition of the artist goes hand in hand with the recognition of the art. Could the same be said of natural beauty? Could it be that in appreciating only the beauty of the landscapes that surround us that we are slightly missing the point?

In galleries the world over works of art are enjoyed and visited by many millions of people who are taken by the beauty on display.

When viewing art, people not only enjoy the finished piece but also appreciate the skill, the time and the effort that has gone in to create the finished masterpiece.

Last year I had the privilege of visiting the Sistine Chapel in Rome.

A remarkable place where the immense detail and vast scale of the artwork on display makes it impossible not to marvel

at the work done by the now world famous artist Michelangelo.

His genius is rightly celebrated by many and his techniques taught in fine art schools all around the world.

There is a verse written many years ago that states that much of mankind has chosen to worship created things rather than the creator.

It is very easy to look out at Plymouth sound on a clear day with the sun setting, appreciate the view and then stop there.

Not giving a second thought to why it is so beautiful.

Can it really be that things that are so undeniably beautiful are simply the result of chance and chaos on the largest scale?

That our human hearts are stirred by the results of the random formation of atoms and not something that is far more creative?

It would be nonsensical to propose that a great piece of artwork such as the Sistine chapel came about without the thoughtful work of a great artist. Surely it is even less reasonable to conclude that there is not an artist behind the much vaster and more detailed art we find in nature?

It is my firm belief that God is the artist behind all the natural beauty we set our eyes on. That not only does he reveal his beauty in nature but that he revealed what he is like through the person of Jesus Christ and that he invites us to know and enjoy him forever.

The next time you enjoy one of the wonderful places around us here in Plymouth, why not take a moment to consider whether there is something, or someone, behind it all.

Seven editions reaching 64,000 homes

Two students from Stoke Damerel Community College in Plymouth are the South West regional winners of the ‘Step into the NHS’ national schools’ competition.

Amanda Shobrook, widening participation and apprenticeship lead for Health Education England, said: “Congratulations to Rion, Charlie and Stoke Damerel Community College for their fantastic entry.

Year 8 students Rion Recica and Charlie Harrison impressed the judges with their entry to promote the role of estates manager to their peers. Rion and Charlie created a professionally styled video advertising the role.

Now in its ninth year, the competition organised by Health Education (England) attracted numerous entries from up and down the country and more than 2,000 students got involved. The competition aims to promote the 350 plus careers available in health and students were tasked with designing an advertisement and job description for their chosen role. They could work individually or in groups of up to four.

Carol Hannaford, executive principal, at Stoke Dameral Community College said: “Rion and Charlie worked extremely hard on their film and certainly got a great performance from Year 8 learning manager Mr Hammond! We are thrilled that they have deservedly been recognised as one of the best entries in the country out of so many.

“Young people are extremely important to the future of the NHS workforce. It is important that the NHS engages with young people now and lets them know about the wealth of career opportunities.

school were so good. We wanted to do something that was not an obvious NHS career to show there are so many different jobs you can do – our film was really fun to make and I think people found it funny to watch too.”

Summer Mix – summer fun!

Some places are still available on the Summer Mix activity programme so there is no excuse for being bored this summer.

From experiencing a working farm for the day to jewellery making, football and archery, there really is something for everyone in this year’s Summer Mix programme.

Plymouth City Council’s Community Connections Youth Team has organised and funded hundreds of free activities for young people in Plymouth to liven up the school summer holidays.

Young people can sign up if they are aged 11 to 19 years, or up to 25 if they have a disability, and all activities are free (except Friday youth evenings at Plymouth Life Centre which are £3.35 per session).
