PGS Alumnus Spotlight:

George Crutcher (B.S. ’07, M.S.M. ’09) George Crutcher is on fire for God. That much is clear when you talk to him, even with the difficulties he’s endured from the stroke he suffered several months ago. Crutcher, 55, (B.S. ’07, M.S. ’09) compares his work as a former chaplain at Wedgwood Christian Services to that of the Professional & Graduate Studies Program at Cornerstone University. “Cornerstone helps you be successful,” he said. “They’re with you every step of the way. And that’s what I want to do as I minister in the future.” And that was how he worked with students at his former job. He formed personal relationships with the young people he worked with. He counseled them, re-connected them with their families and helped them become productive members of society. He also took them to baseball games in Detroit and on other field trips. Now an associate minister at Brown Hutcherson Ministries in downtown Grand Rapids, a non-denominational ministry where he helps with administrative tasks he continues to build relationships and use the tools he learned through PGS. While in the PGS program, Crutcher said he appreciated how staff and faculty members cared about the students and always had time for them. “No one ever turned you away,” he said. “They have you work together, so you don’t have to do it alone.” “Cornerstone puts God in everything from science to business classes,” he said. “Cornerstone has stepped up.”

Just Call Me

Jude In 1974 I came to Grand Rapids Baptist College. Somewhere along the way, someone in Student Affairs (yes that was the name then) referred to me as Ms. Fabisch. I bristled, but I replied as gently as I could. “Sixteen years ago a man loved me enough to ask me to bear his name for the rest of our lives together – and beyond. I’m proud of that, and I would prefer to be called Mrs. Fabisch.” The issue never came up again.

In 1978 I traveled to Papua New Guinea to serve as a missionary. I had no choice; I would be Aunt Judy. When I returned to Grand Rapids in 1982, I tried to turn the nickname to Judith, but it proved too formal. “Judy” was my tag among my friends and colleagues for a long time. Students referred to me as Mrs. Fabisch until 1991, when I finished my Ph.D. work. Then I was “Doctor Fabisch.” Finally, when I was way past the time for deciding upon a name, it came to me: The people who cared about me always reverted to “Jude” when we were relaxed and talking with each other. Good choice. The switch was relatively easy except for a few holdouts. I don’t mind too much. Some habits are hard to change; note my reference to “Dr. Stowell.” In May of 2011 I will retire from CU. Yes, I will still have a Ph.D., but that’s an academic designation. I’d love it if everyone would just call me Jude. That’s who I am. If you need documentation for that, check out my license plate. And so it is with you, alumni. Whereas at one time you would raise your hand in class and ask a question to “Dr. Fabisch,” you are now invited to a new kind of relationship, a kind where you just call her “Jude.” To celebrate the life and influence of Jude plan to attend Driving Miss Daisy on Sept. 11 at 3 p.m., followed by an Afternoon Tea. Alumni who were mentored or taught by Jude R.S.V.P. by Sept. 8 to karissa.ryan@cornerstone.edu

by any other name. . .” But we all know that names are important; just remember the last time someone said your name in a conversation half-way across the room. You turned, immediately, wondering about the context. And just think about the way your parents said your name. When I was a kid, Judy was, well, just Judy. When I heard, “Judith Patricia Theriault, I knew I was in trouble – big trouble.

Steve Welch (B.A. ’91, M.Div. ’97)

Steve

welch, grandson of Dr. Wilbert welch who served as president of Cornerstone University for 24 years, had no desire to attend Cornerstone University. His heart was set on a career in law enforcement or a job with the Department of Natural Resources. But, he gave it a shot anyway. “Family connections to the school definitely piqued my interest,” said Welch (B.A.’91, M.Div. ’97). “Some of the most influential people in my life were connected to this school ‘down the road’ from where I lived.” While at Cornerstone, he began to feel a calling to ministry. He formed relationships with other students, including his roommate, who is currently a pastor. The two still meet weekly, almost 20 years after graduating. He developed relationships with his professors, including Ray Gates, associate professor of biology, and Dan Ehnis, professor of psychology, with whom he spent time in and out of the classroom. “I got to spread my wings and use my gifts – well, really, discover my gifts,” he said. Finally, when he graduated, Welch told God that he was going to look for a job unless an opportunity to work at a church came up, in which case he would go to seminary. Four weeks before classes started at GRTS, he was offered a job at a church – without ever sending out a resume. Needless, to say, he went to seminary and has been serving at Blythefield Hills Baptist Church as student ministries pastor for the past 15 years. As he ministers to teens at his church he also invests in interns from Grand Rapids Theological Seminary, providing opportunities to work alongside him. Just as Dr. Welch continues to serve CU and GRTS students, his grandson has followed in his footsteps.
