2 Term 3 ― August 2022
A little about me I commenced with Cornerstone College in January 2018 as Deputy Principal, and it is my pleasure to oversee the College as Acting Principal for Term 3.
I am an avid hiker and enjoy getting outside in nature. There is nothing quite like the natural beauty of the great outdoors and the reward that comes from reaching your destination, despite the many challenges and obstacles along the way.
It is positive to see the events we have planned for Term 3, and I look forward to celebrating the achievements of our students through the Year 12 Drama Production and Music Cabaret this term. I look forward to gaining a new perspective that comes when walking in the shoes of another as we educate young people in a safe, caring and connected community.
“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
LEADERSHIP
Philippians 4:6–7 Shane Schoff Acting Principal
I have hiked in various places in Australia; however, my favourite hike was in Tasmania with my daughter in December 2021. We hiked for 4 days, through rugged and challenging terrain with only the carefully considered contents of our backpacks. It was both a physical and mental challenge, of which I am grateful to have experienced with my daughter by my side. We are planning our return trip to explore more of the remote wilderness in Tasmania. I call the Adelaide Hills my home and have lived in the hills for 4 years. I originally grew up in New South Wales and moved to South Australia for my tertiary education in 1987. I have taught in Lutheran Colleges in Queensland and South Australia and shared much of the journey with my wife Karen and children James and Elly. Over the next 6 weeks I endeavour to work in partnership with our students, families and wider community to provide a dynamic and innovative learning experience for young people. As Acting Principal, I particularly value the opportunity to meet with parents/caregivers and enjoy meeting new students and their families that are enrolling for 2023/24.
SENIOR
A little about me…

Prayer Points • For the power of neighbourly love in our world • For the courage to speak out and advocate for those in our communities who need our voice • For our Year 12s as they work through their final term of school “Which of these three do you think was a neighbour to the man who fell into the handsof robbers?” (Luke 10:36)
I shared a little of this message with students last week, in the context of how religious people can get things so very wrong when the core of our faith is based on ourselves and not on our neighbours. When it comes to members of our community who are different than us, is our choice not to stand up for them, in fact, driven by what will happen to us if we do, or what will happen to them if we don’t? 3 Term 3 ― August 2022 MINISTRY MATTERS
On the 3rd April 1968, at the height of the civil rights movement in America, Martin Luther King made a speech that included famous words about the possibility of his own demise. Martin Luther King was, in fact, assassinated the very next day, stripping America of one of its greatest fighters for justice and Infreedom.thatsame
sermon, however, the night before he died, Martin Luther King (MLK) used the story of the Good Samaritan in a remarkable way that focused on how religion itself can get things so incredibly wrong. In his famous last speech he talks about the man on the side of the road, bloodied and beaten, and how two priests of the Jewish religion passed by because of their religious priorities. On the other hand, MLK goes on to talk about the Good Samaritan in the story, and his compassion for the beaten man. In his message, though, a contrast is made between those who passed by and those who stopped and helped; a contrast inspired by the different question each man must have asked himself as he made his choice to stay and help or to pass by and not help. In his sermon, MLK speculates that the religious priests will have asked themselves the question, “If I help the man on the side of the road, what will happen to me?” On the other hand, MLK speculates that the Good Samaritan will have asked himself, “If I do not help the man on the side of the road, what will happen to him?”

You may not be familiar with the term, but ‘sextortion' is a form of blackmail where someone threatens to share intimate images of you unless you give in to their demands. It has been an issue for more than a decade, with many adults falling victim to this type of online crime. More recently though, it has been reported that there has been a higher rate of adolescent males falling victim, but that is not to say that young females are not also Acrosstargeted.the globe, organised criminal gangs are using social media, chat apps, instant messaging platforms and online games to target and connect with their victims. Recently, there has been a 400% increase in this type of crime being reported to police in Australia alone with these figures being replicated in most western countries. Any child that uses an online account to connect on social media, chat apps, instant messaging platforms or online games needs to understand the dangers associated with engaging with random people that they don’t know personally. Therefore, it is vitally important for adult carers to be aware of this serious issue and to start having an age appropriate conversation with their young person as early as possible to help protect them from online offenders making Evendemands.though your young person’s online account may be set to private, random people can still message your child. Managing devices can be difficult especially with older teens, but it is important to weigh up the risks and dangers. Indigenous Focus Week and National Reconciliation Week
"God created the world. God created Australia. God created the land on which He placed Cornerstone College. We acknowledge that today we are meeting on the Traditional Land of the Peramangk People and we respect their spiritual relationship with the Land. This statement was developed in consultation with representatives of the Peramangk People".
5 Term 3 ― August 2022 AROUND THE COLLEGE
We had many visible events happening during these weeks. All students were involved in the symbolic wrapping of trees in the Aboriginal Flag colours. These ribbons stay up as a reminder of reconciliation for us all during this time. We also had several chapels and devotions including an awesome interactive presentation by Tim Vanderbom and also a student led chapel, sharing the Community Reconciliation Artwork project in Mount Barker. Thank you to everyone who was involved in the preparation of these significant weeks. Especially to Tim Vanderbom, Casey Patterson, Leanne Filmer, Clare Dorey, Tonya Brooks and Emma Patton. Cornerstone College has committed to celebrating 2 focus weeks for Reconciliation from Monday, 23 May to Friday, 3 June.
ACKNOWLEDGEMENT OF COUNTRY STATEMENT
Our vision for reconciliation is to build positive relationships and understanding between all members of our community so they can continue to be ambassadors beyond their College life. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples are the original Custodians of the Land and our histories, cultures and identities are strongly linked to the First Australians.

We love to teach and learn about other languages and cultures.
There are so many factors that impact student achievement − choice of school, teacher quality, the child’s interest in the subject matter, socio-economic status and geographic location are all well documented aspects that influence how successful a child is at school. Because there are so many elements contributing to achievement, it is problematic to apportion how much impact each factor has on learning.
However, the relationship between teacher quality and student achievement is mediated by the amount of time students spend in the classroom. Irrespective of the reasons for absences, nonattendance affects student outcomes.

Bruce Lenger Maths Teacher
Recently the Australian Institute for Teaching and Learning Leadership (AITSL) published the following: “Teacher quality is the single most important in-school factor influencing student achievement (Hattie, 2009). However, the relationship between teacher quality and student achievement is mediated by the amount of time students spend in the classroom. Irrespective of the reasons for absences, nonattendance affects student outcomes.”
More and more educational authorities are realising and emphasising what we have always suspected. Attendance and engagement are very important to learning. I use both attendance and engagement because in these COVID times, a focused, engaged digital presence is just as important.
Given teacher effectiveness is the strongest school-related determinant of student success and we are lucky to have many very professional and effective teachers at Cornerstone, student absence reduces even the best teacher's ability to provide consistent learning opportunities. It’s difficult for the teacher and the class to build student’s skills and progress if they are absent. Especially in Maths where concepts are often sequential and build on one another.
Maths, Attendance and Engagement
In summary please remember, school attendance and engagement are important factors in determining student There’ssuccess.a well-documented correlation between absences and achievement, which demonstrates that every day matters.

I reflected recently about the effect COVID-19 is having on student achievement and noted that during Term 2, I did not have my entire Year 10 Maths class present for a single lesson of Mathematics. It led me to ponder the following point. How important is it for students to be present and engaged in school lessons?

A selection of artworks have been hanging in the Mount Barker Library from August 5 - 19. Congratulations to those students involved and we hope you all had an opportunity to visit.
SALA Exhibition
7 Term 3 ― August 2022 AROUND THE COLLEGE Hills Schools
The hills schools have had an annual Art exhibition running for years, displaying a range of all student work around the Adelaide Hills. Due to COVID-19 we had to adapt our traditional opening event. This year we were able to register our event as a SALA exhibition. We were really excited to give our students the opportunity to exhibit their work in a public setting.

Grandparents & Special Friends’ Day was held on Tuesday, 28 June and once again we had a Book Stall for books to be purchased and donated to the Anakalypsi Cornerstone Library. Emilie from Matilda Bookshop in Stirling provided a fabulous selection of new titles to support the curriculum, or to tempt students with fiction covering a wide range of genres. We would like to thank the grandparents and special friends for their wonderful generosity in donating nearly $700 worth of new titles. Books that have been donated have a plaque attached acknowledging all these families.
The students were excited about each of their experiences, and we hope parents/caregivers shared in their learning and their weavings which went home. Art presenters were really impressed with the knowledge and openness students had in terms of awareness of First Nations Peoples Culture and History and also the concept of Reconciliation. There were some very important discussions had throughout the day. A barbeque lunch with optional ‘bush ingredients’ was also part of the day. The kangaroo sausages were sensational! Thank you to Rhett Fielke, Sheri Deboy and Joanne Powell for organising this. We hope this opportunity enabled our students to deepen their understanding of Aboriginal cultures and histories and we thank all the Year 7 teachers for their work and focus in this area.

It is always a privilege for the College to be able to run the Year 7 Aboriginal Immersion Day and on Thursday, 30 June we were able to run our usual day with various guests and activities for the learning of our Year 7 students. As part of our commitment to provide rich educational experiences at Cornerstone College, the activities allowed students to gain a deeper perspective of Aboriginal culture and history. All Australian middle school students are required to learn about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and histories, as one of the cross-curriculum priorities of the Australian Curriculum. This Immersion Day is just one way we explore this focus.
• Basket weaving, facilitated by Ellen Trevorrow and the ladies from the Coorong (Ngarrindjeri).

Thank you to my fellow Music Council members, Seb Tonkin (Year 11), Liam Carver (Year 11) and Amelie Bishop (Year 10), who helped organise activities and devotions for the weekend. Finally, I want to say a massive thank you to our incredible music staff: Andrew Day, Anthony Janus and Sophie Zerner.

10 Term 3 ― August 2022 SENIOR SCHOOL
We had the opportunity to perform for each other on Sunday night before we embarked on our primary schools tour on Monday. We were very privileged to be able to visit Mt Barker South Primary School where all the ensembles performed, before going to St Michael's Primary. Here we also performed our ensemble pieces and were incredibly lucky to hear the St Michael's Choir sing for us. The performance ended with Cornerstone's Senior Vocal Ensemble joining the St Michael's Choir on stage for a final song, much to the surprise and delight of the St Michael's students.
On Friday, 12 August the Senior School musicians sat eagerly in Atelier, awaiting the results of their RAT tests, so that we could begin our weekend of music-filled fun at Adare Campsite in Victor Harbor. We spent the weekend rehearsing in our ensembles and valuable sectional practice, as well as engaging in activities organised by the Music Council such as "Sculptionary" and a quiz night. We spent hours working on puzzles and playing polypong (and of course held the annual polypong tournament, ensemble vs ensemble style). We also walked the picturesque route to the mini golf park where we spent the afternoon. You could say that was a "hole" lot of fun!
I want to thank the staff at Adare Campsite for their hospitality, our bus drivers, Mt Barker South and St Michael's Primary Schools for hosting us, all the music students who worked so hard over the weekend, as well as their parents/caregivers who support them in their musical education.
Thank you for all the hard work and dedication that you give to the music department and for this wonderful opportunity.

Carola Kennedy Art TheteacherCentenarian
The aim of this project is to break down the issues of ageism by connecting 100+ year olds with teenagers. The sharing of stories and inter-generational connections formed between the artist and centenarian results in a richer understanding of the value of a person’s life and experiences.
Portrait Project by Embraced was a wonderful experience that I was able to take part in, inspiring me to truly see beauty in life and enjoy stories from those who have lived through significant historical moments.
The centenarian I was paired with was Doreen Arnold, born in 1921, which makes her 102 years old. Doreen immediately strikes you as someone who has lived everyday of their life with an outlook of realism and practicality. She doesn’t see herself as special and yet, she is full of life with her guiding force being her sense of humour.

This year we were blessed with amazing snow conditions. Almost a metre of snow throughout the week, with conditions enabling us to ski right to our door each night. Our trip headed off from Cornerstone College on the evening of Saturday, 16 July. After an overnight bus trip, we were greeted with snow, snow and more snow. A wonderful experience to drive up the mountain while it was snowing, particularly given many of our students had never seen snow.
Again this year the Australian Migrant Resource Centre (AMRC) and Children’s Artspace at Adelaide Festival Centre hosted the Youth Poster Awards Exhibition as part of SA Refugee Week (celebrated Sunday, June 19 - Saturday, June 25 2022) and the exhibition was open to the public during June/July in Children’s Artspace at Adelaide Festival Centre.
Congratulations to our Year 11 Design students who produced a poster that celebrated the themes surrounding the United Nations International Refugee Convention. These themes included multiculturalism, human rights, cultural diversity, antiracism and the welcoming of refugees into Australia, as well as how refugees become part of, and contribute towards, the Australian “family”. Arlette Hunt Teacher We were able to undertake some night activities, with the night skiing and fireworks the highlights – particularly given both events have been unable to be run due to Covid-19 last year.

12 Term 3 ― August 2022
We arrived home in the morning of Saturday, 23 July with many happy but weary travellers on board. I want to thank the staff that came along – Thomas Breitweg, Aidan Mitchell, Rachel Lee and Danielle Bradley – for giving up their holidays to make the trip so special for our students.
Throughout the week, we had mostly blue skies with an excellent coverage of snow throughout. Our students had a wonderful time mastering skiing or snow boarding and formed long lasting relationships with their peers. It was great to see students step out of their comfort zone and build their resilience, with all students able to ski at least green runs by the end of the week.
After arriving in our accommodation at Ripparoo Lodge, we went through the process of hiring gear and equipment and were able to head up the slopes on the Sunday afternoon. With those who had skied before, able to sneak in a few runs before the end of the day.
Our accommodation at Ripparoo was like staying in a second home, with our hosts Claire and Al looking after us throughout the week with amazing food and service.

Finally, we matched up against local rivals Heathfield High School. Despite our first 2 matches, our players were optimistic and set individual goals for our final game. As a team, we aimed to score at least double digits. Our girls hit the ground running, scoring very quickly and even scoring off a few turnovers. Spirits were high in this game and the girls walked away with a well-deserved 13 goals (to Heathfield’s 62).

First up we played Cabra. This was a tough match from the first whistle. We struggled to settle as a new team and Cabra took an early lead. We adjusted to the pressure in the second quarter and started to hit the score board but unfortunately Cabra were too strong and won 67 goals to 6. After refuelling we were up against Sacred Heart. This match up was very similar to Cabra, and our team were feeling the pressure of playing teams that play competitive netball together weekly. Our girls held their heads up throughout, even though the result was 66 goals to 4.

SUCCESS & ACHIEVEMENTS
Jesse Nunan (Year 7) The National AFL U12 championships was held 8-12 August in Adelaide. Jesse was selected in a 23 man SA State team over 250 other players who trialled. SA went through the carnival undefeated winning all 5 games to win a gold medal. This is the first time Victoria had been beaten in 11 years. Jesse was a strong performer throughout the week and enjoyed the experience.
Through an application and audition process I was selected as one of the participants for this program.
Beginning at the start of this year, we aimed to create our own short cabaret set to be performed as a show in the Adelaide Cabaret Festival. With mentoring from industry professionals and many rehearsals throughout, I developed my skills as a performing artist greatly. The other students participating were so incredibly talented and likeminded, and I made many friendships that I’m sure will last a long time. I cannot recommend this program more to anyone even remotely interested in the performing arts.

We hope the Old Scholars enjoyed their night. Jayne Symons Communications & Engagement Director Vale Elizabeth Pietsch The Cornerstone College community were saddened by the recent news of the death of Mrs Elizabeth Pietsch. Liz was one of the foundation staff at Cornerstone College back in 1990 and played an important role in the College’s early establishment years. Liz served initially as a teacher of English, PE and Health, as well as bus driver and all the other roles that come with being a teacher in a fledgling school. She later became the College’s first Careers and Pathways Coordinator and introduced VET into the College. Liz was inspirational to work with, always on the go and actively involved in so many aspects of College life. She had a passion for education, for demanding and bringing out the best in her students and a zest for life. She was very vocal, quite forthright in her views, quite animated and theatrical in all she did, but with always had a big heart for others.
