July brings back memories of my parent’s vegetable garden … picking the early veggies to enjoy with supper, picking cucumbers (a daily task), or digging the weeds.

It's also time for my favourite fruit –watermelon. Cool and juicy, eating watermelon is a tasty way to stay hydrated on a warm afternoon. It’s also the perfect choice for a treat or pudding and goes surprisingly well with a scoop or two of vanilla ice cream.

In the UK, it’s National Blueberry Month. Blueberries are antioxidants and help support heart health, brain function, and overall wellbeing. Blueberries are good for baking, adding to porridge or cold cereal, making Eton Mess, or just eating them by the handfuls.

While searching for images for this newsletter, I found this penguin. He’s cute, but, I’m confused as to what it has to do with July … any ideas?

Word Wheel

A different type of puzzle this month, a word wheel. The object is to use the letters on the wheel to make as many words of 3 to 9 letters as you can think of. However, each word must contain the central B. The AI program that helped me create this says that there are between 40 – 60 words that can be made with this puzzle. Work on this individually or in a group and see how many words you can make.

Lasting Power of Attorney Service

In May 2024, the government launched a service for those with a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) to share the document those who may need to be aware of the LPA.

VISITING GUIDELINES

Important Reminder: Visitors should not enter the home if they are feeling unwell, even if they have tested negative for Covid-19, are fully vaccinated, and have received their booster. Viruses such as the flu, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), and norovirus can be just as dangerous to care home residents as Covid-19. If you have any symptoms such as: a cough, high temperature, diarrhoea, or vomiting, you should avoid visiting for at least 5 days after you feel better.

Visting times are

10:30 AM to Noon

1:30 PM to 5:00 PM

6:00 PM to until the resident has retired for the evening.

There is no restriction to the number of visitors a resident may have at one time.

Visitors are asked to use the alcohol hand gel at the door on entering and exiting the home.

If you are visiting during an outbreak in the home, we may require you to wear a face mask, particularly when walking through the home. Face masks may be removed when the visit is not in a communal area of the home or when you are eating or drinking. However, if you have removed your mask, we ask that you limit any close contact. Children under the age of 11 may choose not to wear a mask but they should be encouraged to follow the other guidelines.

You are welcome to visit in the main lounge, the conservatories, a resident’s bedroom, in the 1st -floor lounge (if available), or in the garden (weather permitting)

In the event of an outbreak, residents will be able to have One visitor at a time (unless other arrangements are agreed with the manager).

During an outbreak, visiting will be limited to the front conservatory and garden. Because time and space will be limited, we ask that you phone at least 24 hours prior to your visit to book a slot to give everyone the opportunity to visit.

To make sure that everyone is given the opportunity to have visitors, the home may reduce the number of visits per day and/or the length of the visits. This will allow the home to follow any additional cleaning and disinfection routines that may be required.

In an effort to protect the residents and yourself, you may be asked to wear an apron, face mask, and/or gloves during your visit.

Please understand that Corner Lodge does not make the decision to close the home to visitors nor do we determine the length of time the home will be closed. Those decisions are made by The U.K. Health Security Agency and/or Public Health England. To ensure the health and wellbeing of our residents and visitors, we are required to follow their instructions.
