It is with great pleasure and a sense of profound purpose that I welcome you all to the opening of the Training Course on Sustainable and Resilient Tourism Beyond Frontiers: The Malaysian Borneo Essence. Today, we gather here to celebrate the embodiment of our commitment to knowledge dissemination, innovation, and international collaboration. This program is a testament to the unwavering dedication of the Institute for Tropical Biology and Conservation (ITBC) at Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) towards advancing sustainable and responsible tourism in alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDG 2030).
The traditional landscape of international tourism has undergone a seismic shift in recent years, prompting us to rethink, reshape, and reinvigorate the way we engage with our planet, our communities, and our industry. The COVID-19 pandemic has only served to highlight the need for a new approach to tourism that is more sustainable, equitable, and resilient.
The Training Course on Sustainable and Resilient Tourism Beyond Frontiers is not just an academic pursuit. It is a bridge to a more sustainable tourism industry that is deeply cognizant of its role in the broader framework of global development.
This course embodies a holistic approach, weaving together the threads of nature tourism, sustainability studies, and consultative experiences. It stands at the intersection of academia, industry, and community, recognizing that the
journey to transformational change must be collective and inclusive. As we gather participants from various backgrounds and experiences, we embark on a journey of exploration, discovery, and co-creation. This journey is not just about learning; it’s about catalyzing innovation, fostering resilience, and empowering each participant to become a torchbearer of change within their respective spheres of influence.
The objectives of this course are ambitious, but they are achievable with the dedication and commitment of everyone involved. We aim to equip you with the knowledge and skills needed to champion sustainable and responsible tourism, to draw lessons from adversity and infuse them into resilient strategies, and to create a dynamic network that transcends borders and fosters collaboration.
We envision a cohort of professionals who will not only transform their own practices but will also ripple positive impacts across their regions and beyond.
As we inaugurate this program, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to all the dedicated minds and hands that have brought this vision to life. The institute, the organizers, the collaborators, and, most importantly, the participants – you are the architects of this endeavor, and your collective dedication is what will shape its success.
With great anticipation, I declare the Training Course on Sustainable and Resilient Tourism Beyond Frontiers officially open. May the knowledge exchanged within these walls reverberate far and wide, enriching our industry, uplifting our communities, and nurturing a world that thrives sustainably.
Thank you.
Sincerely,
Professor Datuk Dr. Kasim Hj. Mansor Vice-Chancellor Universiti Malaysia SabahParticipants from ASEAN and Asian member nations,
Welcome to the UMS-MTCP Training Course on Tourism 2023, under the theme “Sustainable and Resilient Tourism Beyond Frontiers: The Malaysian Borneo Essence.”
As the Director of the Institute for Tropical Biology and Conservation (ITBC) at Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), I extend a warm and enthusiastic welcome to each and every one of you who have embarked on this transformative journey of learning and exploration. Together, we delve into the captivating realm of sustainable tourism, and in doing so, we take a significant stride toward shaping the future of our global tourism industry.
The Institute for Tropical Biology and Conservation has long been dedicated to the promotion of nature-based tourism, sustainability, and the responsible management of our natural resources. Our commitment to these ideals remains unwavering, even in the face of unprecedented global challenges.
In light of the tumultuous events of recent years, including the far-reaching impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, the need for sustainable and resilient tourism practices has never been more apparent. It is our belief that this program, with its focus on the Malaysian Borneo, offers a unique platform for dialogue, education, and collaboration to chart a course forward that respects the environment, preserves local cultures, and ensures the prosperity of communities.
This training course has been thoughtfully designed to equip you with the knowledge and skills required to navigate the evolving landscape of sustainable tourism, aligning with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Furthermore, it offers a lens through which we can examine the lessons of resilience learned during the pandemic and apply them to our industry.
We gather here not just as individuals but as a community of like-minded individuals from diverse backgrounds and cultures. As you interact and share your insights, you contribute to a network that transcends geographical boundaries, fostering the exchange of ideas and the potential for impactful collaboration.
I wish to express my heartfelt appreciation to all those involved in bringing this program to life. The dedication of our organizing committee, the commitment of our esteemed participants, and the enduring support of our partners have made this endeavor possible.
In conclusion, I encourage each one of you to seize this opportunity for growth and exploration. Engage actively, challenge preconceptions, and be open to new perspectives. Together, we can pave the way for a more sustainable and resilient tourism industry.
Thank you and may your journey throughout this training course be enriching and inspiring.
Thank you.
Sincerely,
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Fiffy Hanisdah Saikim DirectorOn behalf of the Government of Malaysia, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Malaysia, I am extremely pleased to welcome all participants of the Training Course on Sustainable and Resilient Tourism Beyond Frontiers: The Malaysian Borneo Essence. I believe that this program will provide a good platform, and equip all participants with the necessary knowledge and skills as you carry out your responsibility more effectively in the future.
MTCP emphasizes strongly on the development of human resources as one of the most valuable and resourceful capital assets that could influence the development and progress of a country. Through the courses conducted under the MTCP, we are able to experience a truly strategic partnership between Wisma Putra, and our strategic partners such as UMS, in further advancing our commitment for effective and impactful global development initiatives. No doubt, this is in line with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development which contains 17 agreed Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). To this end, we wish to register our appreciation and thanks to UMS for their dedication as well as the excellent arrangement put in place to make this course a success. We certainly look forward to working closely with you again in the future.

Devrin Jeck Undersecretary International Cooperation and Development Division Ministry of Foreign Affairs, MalaysiaThe Training-Course on Sustainable and Resilient Tourism Beyond Frontiers: The Malaysian Borneo Essence is an apt showcase of the capacity and capability of the Institute for Tropical Biology and Conservation (ITBC), Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) in nature tourism and subsequently, sustainable and responsible tourism related studies and consultative experiences at the local, national and regional levels to share pertinent knowledge, skills and future-proof paradigm with ASEAN and Asian member nations in tandem with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDG 2030). Tourism industry requires restructuring and revitalizing, even if the COVID19 pandemic did not shrink international tourism industry by more than 70% in 2020 and 2021 according to World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), and sustainable and responsible tourism appears to be a fitting novel direction adhering to the heightened awareness level of people post pandemic.
Coupled with the incorporation of elements on resilience to face any future worldwide calamities and the adoption of Industrial Revolution IR4.0 and Society5.0 concepts, this training-course has been designed to further augment the roles of ITBC, UMS, in specific as well as Sabah and Malaysia, in general as expertise provider and networking initiator in tourism in ASEAN and Asia with conservation of the natural world in perspective.

Ultimately, the training-course aims for the participants to be able to absorb new ideas and perspectives into moulding applicable fresh projects and programmes to benefit the tourism industry in their respective nations and places for regional and global good.
To provide relevant knowledge and skills on sustainable and responsible tourism and its relatedness to United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDG 2030).
To introduce and expand ideas and innovations on resilience in tourism learning from the COVID19 pandemic, including conservation perspectives.
To facilitate networking, engagements, interaction and collaboration on tourism among participants from ASEAN and Asian member nations and with appropriate local tourism frontliners, agencies and individuals from Sabah and Malaysia
To facilitate publication / socmed content creation on tourism with participants.
