My Favorite Things: Fall Edition This past January, my team of bloggers gathered to celebrate sisterhood and to be spoiled with a few of our favorite things. The evening ended up being one of the highlights of my career. That event inspired me to search through our magazine issues from the past six years and find some of my favorite articles. So, this fall issue is chock-full of my favorite articles from this extra-special time of year!

Fall has always been a favorite season. Especially football season. Now that my son is playing on the varsity high school team, you can be certain that I’m one proud mama. Since I love football so much, it’s not surprising that a football article made the cut for one of my favorites. It’s an article from 2014, and it talks about football and marriage and how I can be a “Fan for My Man.” This article challenged me to be a better wife, and I knew it deserved a place in this issue.

Each costume took about 30 minutes to make and required so little brain-power that I didn’t need a cup of coffee.

Apple-ishous! BY VICKIE MYERS

:: FAVORITE THINGS :: FALL 2011 ISSUE Apples – such a traditional part of our American culture.

I haven’t always lived in Florida, where the apples are ripe in early summer. I used to live farther north, and the apples harvested in the fall as the leaves were turning colors. In my mind, autumn really begins with apple-picking season. When we lived in Nebraska, we had two different varieties of apples in our yard. One ripened a bit earlier than the other so our apple season lasted quite a while. My two oldest kids were very small so I loved picking the apples off the tree and making applesauce for the children. Every fall I looked forward to going to the local apple orchard, where they had many varieties of apples, and buying them by the basket. I enjoyed making apple butter, apple crisp, and dried apples. Oh, and there is nothing quite like eating a juicy apple picked fresh from the tree. I hope these yummy apple recipes bring a little taste of autumn to your home!

Chilled Apple Chai Chai Tea

Apple Juice

Experiment with these ingredients to find your perfect blend of apple juice and Chai Tea. Pour over ice and sip this refreshing drink during the Fall season. Organic Blends of Third St. Chai and apple juice are available at your Whole Foods Market.

Apple Caramel Pastry 1 sheet of Puff pastry 3 or 4 Pink Lady apples ¼ cup brown sugar 3 tablespoons butter

¼ teaspoon cinnamon Caramel sauce 1 egg (for egg wash, mix with 1 tablespoon water)

A Core and slice apples. If you do not like the apple peel, apples may be peeled.

A Put apples, butter, brown sugar & cinnamon into skillet.

While stirring, cook over medium heat until sugar dissolves, then cover and cook for 5 minutes.

A Remove cover & cook until liquid thickens, about 5 minutes. A Unfold one sheet of puff pastry and cut into 4 squares. A Place apple mixture diagonally across each square, then fold two corners up over the apple mixture.

A Brush egg wash on the top of the pastry. A Bake in 400 degree oven for 15- 20 minutes until top is golden brown.

A Cool slightly, drizzle caramel sauce across apple puff & serve. (Serves 4)

FAN for my

MAN

By Heather Naples

Photography by Sari Underwood Photography

There was no pre-nup when my husband and I got married. But there were rules. Certain, specific rules that, according to my husband, were absolute deal breakers. Actually, there was really only one rule. I had to become a football fan. And not just any football fan; I had to become a Buffalo Bills fan. I don't know how much you know about the NFL (I knew next to nothing), but here's something you should know about the Buffalo Bills. Being a Bills' fan is painful. Really painful. They are the only team to go to the Super Bowl four years in a row and lose every time. Yes. Every. Single. Year. Luckily, I wasn't around back then to be coerced into becoming a fan during those especially painful years. But let me tell you, these last 3 years haven't quite been a walk in the park either. Let's take, for example, our wedding day, which I had planned on a Sunday to save us a few thousand dollars. At the time I didn't take into account that the Bills would be playing one of their division rivals. So what did that mean for my wedding day? It meant the entire male side of my bridal party was at a sports bar before arriving at the wedding venue, and they all arrived in jerseys. Oh, and they blamed that day's loss on our impending nuptials. Awesome. But, I digress; this article isn’t about the Buffalo Bills. What it is about is the things we do for love, be they big or small. For me, I became a fan for my man.

:: FAVORITE THINGS :: FALL 2014 ISSUE

My husband supports everything I do. Whether it's taking me to the midnight movie premier of my favorite young adult series (yes, he went to a few Twilight premiers, God bless him), helping me launch a baking career from our home kitchen, or just bringing me an extra cup of coffee in the morning after he knows I’ve been up all night with our daughter, he is my biggest fan. So for him, if becoming a football fan and sharing his passion is the least I can do, I will always happily do it. So every September I wake up early on Sundays and put on a jersey with the name of a player I don’t know and I head to a local bar with my husband an hour before the game starts just so we can reserve our table. And I happily throw my diet out the window and consume my weight in chicken wings. I order beers and scream angrily at the television at what seems like appropriate times and yell about flags and holding and other things that I hear people say but that I have no idea what they mean. And my husband beams with pride. He absolutely loves it. And you know what, I love it too. What started out as a “him” thing has turned into an “us” thing. And honestly, it is something that I now look forward to every year. Becoming a fan for my man brought my marriage closer, and I’m so thankful for that. And I’m also thankful that he wasn’t a Patriots fan. Our marriage might not have worked out as well if that would have been the case. Just kidding. But seriously, Go Bills! (We’re coming for you Pats!) The MOMS Magazine • Fall 2016 • www.TheMomsMagazine.com

There is a distinct lack of support for women choosing to breastfeed their babies in America. With formula ads, free samples and coupons at your doorstep, it can be very tempting to just throw in the towel on breastfeeding or even worse, not try at all. Today, many women are scrutinized when nursing their baby (or toddler) in private settings, let alone in public. “How much longer are you going to breastfeed? How old IS your, um, toddler?” Since when did breastfeeding become so un-normal? In September 2009, I gave birth in a hospital to a stunning strawberry blonde haired baby boy. Despite my birth not going as intended, that little being was now earth-side and I couldn’t wait to give him the world, beginning with nourishment from my breast. As every new mother tries to begin the bond with her new baby, you question everything you are doing, with breastfeeding being at the top of the list. “Am I doing this right? Is he getting enough?” So many little things come up in your mind and many new moms don’t ask for guidance.

obstacles along their journey. They are not failures. Most are just not educated or don’t have the proper support in place.

My son and I established a good latch after several sessions and my milk came in on the third day. Things seemed to be going pretty well with breastfeeding, minus some colic and reflux issues and we settled into a groove around five weeks old. Then my sister passed away unexpectedly and my entire milk supply dwindled to none. After a week of my son not nursing and only receiving a bottle with previously pumped milk and formula, he refused my nipple. Uneducated, I proceeded to pump what I could and supplement with formula until four months of age, and then I stopped pumping entirely. I was only getting an ounce or so a day.

What should you do to foster a successful nursing relationship with your little one?

In January of 2013, I gave birth to a beautiful baby girl in the water, at home. Having gone through so much with my first born, I was determined to have a well-educated, natural birth experience the second time around. Our first latch was awesome and we’ve had a great breastfeeding experience ever since! Seeking advice and being educated helped make this a successful breastfeeding relationship.

Find a local support group or private lactation consultant while pregnant.

Ask for help if you need it! It DOES NOT make you a failure as a mother to ask for help, even if you think breastfeeding is something that should just happen naturally.

Educate yourself. There are a lot of great resources available to help prepare you to breastfeed your baby. Learn as much as you can ahead of time so you can be prepared to try different techniques!

And when in doubt, look at yourself in the mirror and repeat after me: “Do not give up! The beginning is always the hardest! Babies are born to breastfeed. Breast milk is nature’s finest and available on tap 24/7! And the best part is that it’s free!”

From my own experiences, my best advice for pregnant and new mommas: it is not always going to be “easy”! You will potentially battle issues such as undersupply, clogged ducts, thrush, and much more. It can be extremely discouraging in the moment and many women abandon breastfeeding because of the
