Viviana Colon-Gaud After working a full-time job for longer than I can remember, becoming a stay-at-home mom has been the best decision ever. For years I contemplated the idea of enjoying every moment of my kids’ lives, but I was terrified of the financial burden it would be to my family. With the hot,sticky summer moving out, the more desirable temperatures call us outside.We set up park play dates,take nature hikes,enjoy an afternoon picnic,hit the less crowded beaches, and even consider camping. Our Florida fall memories are a weave of the flavors of the season,but with a twist – outdoor experiences,adventures,and creating crafts with nature’s treasures that are collected along the way.
A Lot of Pumpkins Patch
Santa’s Farm
One common misconception is to think of Santa’s Farm as if it is for Christmas trees only; but in October they celebrate fall time with their A Lot Of Pumpkins weekend events. And even more surprisingly: admission, parking, and the petting zoo are all free!

At Jack’s Barnyard, children have an opportunity to get up close to the farm animals and pet each one. Then there is the horse and pony ride, hay ride, bounce pillow, kiddie barrel cart ride, 400-foot-long zip line, and 200-foot-long junior zip line. Each operates on a $2 ticket system. You can shop for a pumpkin, purchase tools from the gift shop, and learn pumpkin carving techniques. Each pumpkin is priced individually based on size. In addition, there is a concession stand (with kettle corn), covered picnic areas, and you can even roast a hot dog for lunch. Santa’s Christmas Tree Forest is open from 3 to 6 p.m. on Fridays and from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. For information, go to www.santaschristmastreeforest.com.

Long & Scott’s Corn Maze Families and groups can make a full day of all the activities: a 7-acre Corn Maze, the 3-acre “Cornfusion” tree maze, hayrides
that travel throughout the farm, a 40-by67-foot jumping pillow, zip lines for kids, a 60 foot super slide, a kids play area, catch-and-release fishing for kids, pumpkin patch, shopping at the general store, and dining at Scott’s Country Café. After only a short drive to the Mt. Dora area, you can be scrambling through a corn maze, catch a hayride, get up close to farm animals, and roast hot dogs on an open fire. Long and Scott Farms have created an incredible experience for the entire family over the past 13 years.

Long and Scott Farms is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays and from 1 to 5 p.m. on Sundays through December 13. Cost is $11 for adults, $9 for children ages 3-16, and kids under 3 are free. It’s always a good idea to bring paper lunch bags along, labeled with each child’s name, to carry the treasures they collect. We enjoy spending an afternoon getting creative by crafting with the nature items that were collected. The kids have fun making leaf rubbings in fall colors, imagining pine cone animals, designing fairy gardens, assembling nature weaves, and painting a walking stick.
Central Florida has so much to offer during the fall season. You just need to get outside and make some memories. On those Florida hot fall days, mugs of toasty warm apple cider or pumpkin spice drinks are not a first choice. My kids love those fall flavors Florida style - chilled! It is important to use pressed apple cider; it should look dark and murky, not clear like apple juice. Otherwise the flavor will not be strong enough. During Fall, you can find pressed apple cider at most grocery stores.
Caramel Apple Cider Milkshake 8 oz. apple cider (not apple juice) 3-4 scoops vanilla ice cream 1 Tbsp caramel sauce
Garnish: Whipped cream, caramel sauce for drizzle, and cinnamon. Directions: Blend apple cider, ice cream and caramel sauce together. For a thicker shake, add more ice cream. Garnish with whipped cream, drizzled caramel sauce and cinnamon sprinkled on top. For more flavor and presentation, drizzle caramel on inside of glass before filling.
Caramel Apple Cider Float 1 Cup Ginger Ale ½ Cup apple cider 1-2 scoops vanilla ice cream
Garnish: Caramel sauce for drizzle and cinnamon. Directions: In a large glass (consider a mason jar), combine Ginger Ale and apple cider. Drop in scoops of ice cream. Garnish with caramel sauce and cinnamon sprinkle. Serve immediately.
