A Message from the Coriell Institute

Welcome to the 44th Annual Coriell Institute Science Fair!

The Coriell Institute for Medical Research is proud to host this showcase of young scientists from across South Jersey I am particularly delighted that we are able to bring this marquee event back to the City of Camden I want to thank RutgersCamden Chancellor Antonio Tillis and his team for their gracious hospitality for what we hope is the first of many more to come

As the historic home of the chemical, pharmaceutical, telecommunications, and food processing industries, New Jersey has a rich history as a global leader in research and innovation. With iconic research-based companies anchoring its world-renowned innovation economy and boasting one of the country’s top K-12 public school systems, New Jersey provides students with an incomparable environment full of boundless opportunities to explore their scientific interests.

The Coriell Institute is pleased to be a member of this world-class innovation ecosystem for more than 70 years Since its founding in 1953 by famed virologist Dr Lewis L Coriell, the Institute has set the standard for biobanking, producing biomaterials for the international research community, and groundbreaking research into the underlying genetic causes of disease. From discovering how to sustain human cells in culture leading to development of the polio vaccine to developing aseptic air filtration technologies to uncovering the epigenetic causes of cancer, Coriell has a rich legacy of contributions to improving health and advancing science.

Just as important, we also know that as the current stewards of the Institute, it is also our responsibility to enthuse and cultivate future generations of scientists who will carry on our work here and elsewhere This is why this science fair, and our other educational programs, are so important to us They provide opportunities for those of you who are interested in a career in science with hands-on experience to hopefully jump-start a life-long, rewarding scientific career

And based on the analytical, research, and presentation skills that our students demonstrate through their projects, I can see that our pipeline of future researchers is extremely talented. I am truly amazed at each fair at how students are thinking outside the box and employing the latest technology like seasoned scientists to discover new, innovative approaches to improve human health and our quality of life and expand our knowledge of the universe

And I hope you will keep Coriell in mind as you continue with your education and proceed on your career track, and take advantage of our other opportunities, such as our summer internship program and potential future employment in our post-doctoral program or as a scientist.

Of course, this is not an undertaking our students take alone. To all of the parents, dedicated teachers, and mentors, thank you for inspiring and nurturing their interest in the STEM disciplines, and supporting their goals to improve the world through science and scholarship.

I also want to thank our sponsors, leaders in New Jersey’s scientific community, who enthusiastically invest in STEM education to maintain a robust pipeline of research talent to sustain our innovation economy and expand scientific knowledge

To all our participants, congratulations on being here. We look forward to meeting you and learning about your project and ambitions.

About the Coriell Institute

The Coriell Institute for Medical Research is an internationally renowned biomedical research nonprofit institution with a dual mission – to supply the global research community with high quality biological materials and laboratory services and to conduct innovative research at its facility in Camden, New Jersey

Research is a major focus of the Coriell Institute Jean-Pierre Issa, MD, Coriell’s President and Chief Executive Officer, is a world-recognized expert in epigenetics – or the ways the turning “on” and “off” of genes affect our health – of aging and cancer Coriell has a team of researchers working to uncover the role epigenetics plays in cancer and how it can be tapped to improve treatments In 2023, Coriell launched the Camden Cancer Research Center, a collaborative research effort, with Cooper University Health Care and Cooper Medical School of Rowan University to tackle cancer here in South Jersey

The Institute was founded in 1953 by Dr. Lewis L. Coriell. Dr. Coriell, a famed virologist who played an important role in developing the polio vaccine, saw a need for standardized biological samples for use in research and worked with the National Institute for General Medical Sciences to create a collection which all scientists could depend on. That collection, the Human Genetic Cell Repository, was launched at Coriell in 1973. Over the years, the Institute has built relationships with many other organizations and now offers millions of samples to scientists around the world.

Coriell relies on donations to fully fund our programs and services. Join us by signing up for our mailing list and donating.
