BIO Hello!

My name is Corey, and I’m a landscape architect in training, actively working toward licensure. A variety of different factors drew me into the field of landscape architecture, including my love for mountain biking and outdoor recreation, community, art, and technology.

I have worked long enough to identify a particular affinity for multi-discipline urban design projects that focus on introducing environmental design into cities, with direct benefits for the local community.

I’m excited to further my career in landscape architecture, and I hope you enjoy perusing the work featured in this portfolio!

LANDSCAPE PLAN

The Expo was an incredible experience; and the very first professional project I got the privaledge to participate in.

Working with senior civil engineers and landscape architects, I was given the opportunity to collaborate in the high level design and construction process, including the development of a landscape plan.

SITE PLAN GRAPHIC

With guidance and plenty of redlines, I laid out ground level and rooftop landscapes, and created several marketing graphics and renderings. These types of graphics became one of my strong points while at Alliant; I am able to produce these within 6-10 hours which has been extremely helpful to fulfilling last minute requests and new ideas or updates.

PUTTING GREEN SKETCH

My main contribution to the project was a concept for a small putting green submitted during schematic planning that made it into the final design!

SWEETGRASS DEVELOPMENT

Master plan for a 150 acre mixed use planned development in St. Mary’s, GA. There were many moving parts to this effort, all of which were carried out in tandem with Alliant’s Florida office. The marketing graphics I created were used to visualize major phases of the project to city officials and the community during proposals.

While much of the project was thought out at the macro scale, focused graphics like this one were important to communicating functional aspects at plan level. I was given the task of showing a simple rain garden bed with equally simple and readable specifications.

I put together this section after the client asked to see how a densly planted industrial boulevard would look at year 0 and year 25.

PUBLIC PLAZA CONCEPT

This sketch was dreamed up as a low traffic urban roundabout that could be converted into a public gathering space.

What’s interesting about this sketch is that it was actually conceived of in a group setting, with myself and classmates throwing out ideas and all of us sketching what was forming from the charette.

DOWNTOWN FARGO

A quick and hasty sketch of the Skyway across Broadway and Second Avenue, drawn in the blasting wind and cold of North Dakota.

This sketch and the plaza above were both done for a segment of my second year in University; Urban Sketching 101. Our professor tasked us with different sketching excercises to get us drawing in different locations and conditions than what we might be used to.

PIER 48

D ESIG N TE CHN O LO GY

Pier 48 was an urban planning project undertaken during my 4th year in the LA program. With two other classmates, I created a sprawling sketc hup model of part of the Mission Bay neighborhood in San Fransisco, CA near the baseball stadium.

3D Modeling and design tecnology became my b r e a d a n d b u t t e r t h ro u g h U n i ve r s i t y. I frequently relied on the abilities I learned and honed to better communicate project ideas at a larger scale. The laser cut model to the right was created from the same CAD wor k I set up t o c r e a t e t h e S ke t c h u p c o n c e p t b e l ow. B o t h were used in the final presentation.

LASER CUTTER / CNC

One of the most powerful and underutilized tec hnologies in the profession of landscape a r c h i t e c t u r e i s t h e l a s e r c u t t e r. To p o g r a p h i c models are just one of the many applications for more tactile visualization this tec hnology provides.

I earned laser certification during my second y e a r, e n a b l i n g m e t o r u n t h e l a s e r c u t t e r f o r both myself and classmates. I was also afforded the c hance to make use of the CNC mac hine, and gained a lot of valuable experience.

3D PRINTER

I was also for tunate enough to enter into the field of landscape arc hitecture around the time NDSU was outfitted with a 3d printing lab.

S i m i l a r t o t h e l a s e r c u t t e r, t h e s e models became commonplace as a visual tool for many projects.

Pictured here is an original design I made in sc hool to organize my desk.

Besides its obvious usefulness, I’ve also enjoyed the visual flair it adds to my workstation. It turns out that nearly 1,000 others also made use of this model; the attached stats are the unique downloads of my model’s STL file on Thingiverse.com since 2014.

PROJECT OVERVIEW

Summit’s Rally was my senior thesis project, whic h involved utilizing historical logging footprints to expand on the North Cascades Environmental Learning Center and Diabolo L a ke Tra i l h e a d .

The overall design is lower and upper t ra i l h e a d s, c o n n e c t e d by l ow i m p a c t t ra i l s a n d a proposed cable car set along an abandoned logging road.

I went back and added this rendered detail to better show the user level of the visitor level landscape, and how the materials would wor k together to create a unique experience.

Po s i t i o n e d a s a d e s t i n a t i o n n o d e along the proposed trailhead extension, this area features another educational landscape simulating the life cycle of a typical PNW forest biome, and the o ve r l o o k f e a t u r e d b e l ow.

I Rendered this visualization using V- Ray p l u g i n s fo r S ke t c h u p w i t h final lighting touchups done in Photoshop.

S K Y WA L K O V E R L O O K

This proposed overlook structure would be the climax along the proposed trail extension, set to give users an awe inspiring vantage point above the trees, nearly at the peak of the mountain range, with the cable line and the expanse of the Diabolo and Ross Lake recreation area to gaze upon.

This graphic was created similarily to the previous one featured. I based the structure itself on one found along the Grand Canyon in Arizona, with the design principle being to push users further into the grandeur of the viewshed than what nature would normally allow while maintainging minimal impact.
