What is Asthma? ● Asthma is a disease that makes it hard for you to breathe. ● It is hard for your lungs to get the air and oxygen needed making it hard to breathe. ● Asthma only makes it hard to breathe sometimes, this is called an “asthma attack”

Take your medications how your Doctor wants you to Avoid things that make it hard for you to breathe Use your inhaler if you start coughing a lot or having a hard time breathing Tell an adult when you use your inhaler or cannot breathe well Always keep your inhaler with you or an adult Take your medications at the same time you brush your teeth, that way you never forget!

How to use my inhaler?

Being around things that irritate your airway: ● Grass ● Pollen ● Dust ● Animal hair ● Cold air ● Smoke or chemicals ● Perfumes ● Exercising ● Infections, such as a cold or flu

1. Remove inhaler cap 2. Hold inhaler upright and shake well 3. Put inhaler mouthpiece into mouth and close your lips 4. Breathe out normally 5. Press down on inhaler to release one puff of medication 6. Breathe in and out normally for 3 or 4 breaths with your lips still on the mouthpiece 7. Remove inhaler from mouth 8. Breathe out normally

Avoid things that trigger your asthma attacks like: ● Dust, pollen, animal hair, and mold ● Smoke and perfumes ● Infections, like cold and flu ● Exercising ● Breathing in cold air *Change your sheets weekly, keep animals out of your room, stay inside when it is windy. *If you get asthma attacks from exercising, use the medication from your doctor before exercising.

How to avoid asthma attacks?

It is important to use your inhaler how your doctor tells you to.

Take it daily if that is how your doctor prescribed it.

If you cannot stop coughing If you hear whistling while you breathe If your chest feels tight If it is hard to breathe Before exercise, if prescribed by your doctor

When to tell an adult?
