Programme Outline

Te Poipoi Kaiako | Mentor support programme helps mentor teachers in English medium and Pou Tautoko in Māori medium settings to develop their skills for supporting provisional teachers, Pia, and overseas trained teachers. It also supports these mentees to complete the requirements for obtaining full certification with the Teaching Council of Aotearoa New Zealand. It is suitable for all settings from early years to senior secondary schools and kura.

Te Poipoi Kaiako | Mentor support programme is for:

› Provisional teachers (PTs) in English medium settings

› Pia in Māori medium settings

› Overseas trained teachers (OTTs) with provisional certification

› Mentor teachers and Pou Tautoko

› Schools, kura and early childhood centres

The programme is fully funded by the Ministry of Education and focuses on supporting the professional development of mentors. It supports mentors to develop skills, strategies and approaches to mentoring and coaching that they can use across their careers and with different mentees. The programme also supports PTs, Pia and OTTs to build their skills and navigate the process of achieving full certification with the Teaching Council of Aotearoa New Zealand.

The programme offers a nationally consistent framework and resources including:

› workbooks and guidance for mentees and mentors

› facilitated guidance through webinars and face to face workshops

Webinars and workshops

Webinars that complement the self-directed modules are offered each term. Programme participants have the opportunity to provide feedback about possible topics.

Workbooks and guidance for mentees

The programme provides mentors and mentees with guidance and support for understanding and navigating the process of obtaining full certification. The workbook is specifically intended to support mentees to document evidence required for certification.

Anganga Pou Tautoko | Mentoring programme framework

The programme supports mentor teachers and Pou Tautoko who are supporting PTs, Pia and OTTs to achieve full certification with the Teaching Council of Aotearoa New Zealand. From there, newly certified teachers will be able to continue their Personal Growth Cycle and other PLD. KurareoMāori

Yes. The programme is designed to support mentor teachers and their mentees. The aim is for mentees to achieve full certification with the Teaching Council.

Q. How much does the programme cost?

The programme is fully funded by the Ministry of Education for all participants who are in state funded and state-integrated schools.

Q. Can I seek funding for travel and resource costs?

No. These are school/individual costs.

Q. How will this programme benefit me as a new graduate?

Te Poipoi Kaiako | Mentor support programme will support you as you transition into a school or kura as a graduate teacher and support your mentor to help you develop plans, set goals and assist and challenge you. The programme is offered through a variety of mediums to empower you to learn, grow and achieve full certification and your teaching goals.

Q. Will I have the same mentor/ mentee throughout the programme?

Mentor allocation is organised within your setting, you may have one mentor or multiple mentors throughout the two year programme.

Q. Is this programme compulsory for mentors and mentees?

No. However, it is designed to offer best-practice mentoring and learning to achieve full certification with the Teaching Council. Mentors and mentees can engage with the whole programme or specific elements which meet their needs.

Q. Is the programme flexible or do I need to complete all parts of it?

Webinars and workshops are part of a fixed schedule of events.

The introductory module is recommended for everyone. All other modules cover standalone topics which allows participants to identify modules that meet their learning needs.

Q. Which elements of this programme are compulsory?

We encourage you to select the learning pathway that will best suit you and your mentee/mentor. There are no requirements for completion of any part of the programme. We suggest that you pick the elements that suit you or attend a variety of learning opportunities for a rounded learning experience.

Q. How will I access the programme resources?

Programme resources are available on Education LMS and Tāhūrangi. Throughout the programme, resources are shared via email to support everyone attending and remind you about upcoming workshops, webinars or events.

Q. Can my school, kura or early childhood centre host face to face workshops?

Yes. We are currently looking for venues across the motu to host regional workshops.
