ccording to Orsolya Szecsenyi, Head of the Hungarian Embassy’s Office of Economic Affairs, “Hungary’s exports to Serbia have shown a steady increase of almost 300% during the past five years. Szecsenyi’s team believe that Hungarian–Serbian bilateral trade will continue to enjoy the strong support of around 450-500 SMEs. “The latest Statistical Agency of Serbia report shows Hungary ranks as the 8th largest exporter to Serbia.

How much potential for Hungarian investment in Serbia exists and where does the greatest untapped potential lie? With investments in the Serbian market by Hungarian-based multi-national companies OTP, MOL, Betonut Zrt., as well as Hungarian SMEs, Hungarian companies continue to show a growing interest in, and excitement for, Serbia. In 2005, OTP Bank signed a contract with the Serbian Bank Rehabilitation Agency relating to the acquisition of Niťka Banka. In 2006 the acquisition of two additional private banks, Zepter and Kulska, allowed the new jointly-owned entity to achieve an impressive three per cent share of the Serbian market. Additionally, Hungarian petroleum company, MOL, has opened 28 environmentally-friendly fuel stations in Serbia. Another Hungarian company, Betonut – one of the five largest construction companies in Hungary – invested in Serbia in 2007 by taking over 68.13% of tof Valjevo Road Company for ₏1.57 million, also committing to a social programme and realisation of an investment programme worth ₏2.73 million. With these long term Hungarian investments and commitments, the NBS reported that Hungary’s foreign direct investment (FDI) in Serbia totals US$500 Million. Hungary is the 9th largest foreign investor in Serbia. What kinds of activities is your office undertaking in an effort to boost bilateral commercial ties? In March 2006, the Office of Economic Affairs of the Hungarian Embassy in Belgrade moved into our new offices, located at Branićevska 13, with the official opening taking place in May 2006. From our new office, we continue to co-ordinate and monitor Hungarian business relations with Serbia. We are proud that during the last year our office quickly and professionally responded (in under 72 hours) to more than 1,000 inquiries (many relating to trade laws) from Hungarian citizens and businesses interested in business relations in and with Serbia. Our office has also jointly organised presentations with Hungarian and Serbian organisations to answer questions and offer information to interested Hungarian entrepreneurs and businesses seeking Serbian business partners and investment details. Great long term commercial benefits to both
