DEAR FRIENDS AND COLLEAGUES,

W

e all know that the spring of 2020 will be in our great, great grandchildren’s history books as a pivotal and transformational period for families and communities. It will forever change the way we educate, how we capitalize on technology in our businesses, how we tackle incredible challenges and how we are willing to stay connected with and support others in need.

By the end of March, I knew that evolving our services quickly to meet the emerging needs of children and parents during the forthcoming days was essential. Safeguarding more than 350 employees, who desired to use their skills actively in the community, CORA continued to provide the usual and some new services. Staff were creative in offering hope and stability to parents and communities through in-person and virtual contacts in every program and will continue to do so during the unstable days ahead.

I maintained the belief that if we worked together with creativity and innovation, we would exit this crisis stronger than when we entered. As always, the staff and Board rose to the challenge with advocacy, resourcefulness and long assiduous hours. Although we lost a great deal of revenue through the spring months and missed fun and engaging opportunities, such as our golf outing, we exited the fiscal year recognized among our communities, schools and government partners as a powerful innovative provider willing to take

The story of the next year still has many unknowns and many possible endings. We do not take lightly the anxiety many of our children and families experience, the social and political unrest, the isolation and health concerns we continue to face nor the challenged education system. What is known is that we are here to listen and respond to the emerging needs around us. While we cannot be all things to all people, we will advocate, change and grow as needs and systems develop.

In October 2021, CORA Services will be joyfully celebrating 50 years of service, and what a year to celebrate! As we plan and launch our celebrations, I will be engaging in a “community listening tour”. I desire to be meeting families and critical partners — in person or virtually — gaining insight into how CORA’s past and present has impacted others and what our future should hold. We are excited to embark on our second fifty years of meaningful service and it is my honor to continue to partner with all of you!

PROGRAMMING DID NOT STOP FOR COVID! Virtual OST was provided from March–June for grades K–8. Between 3 and 6 p.m., kids logged in for live dance classes, DIY fun, literacy and STEAM activities, career exploration, and even virtual Field Trip Fridays in partnership with the Franklin Institute!

Career Development Resource Center (CDRC) Providing 7th and 8th grade students with engaging hands on career exploration workshops.

Truancy Intervention and Prevention Services (TIPS) Aimed at increasing school attendance and student success, TIPS works with the School District of Philadelphia, Family Court, and Community Umbrella Agencies (CUAs) to help families problem-solve to get kids in school consistently and on time.

AOD (Alcohol and Other Drug) Prevention Prevention & Social Emotional Learning 781 students were served through evidence-based programing, including Positive Action and Too Good for Drugs, Too Good for Violence 47 students participated in Virtual Social Emotional Learning Programs

Pregnancy and Parenting Supports/Lifeline Support for teens and young adults who are expecting or newly parenting was provided in person as well as virtually throughout the pandemic, with special attention to preparing fathers as well as mothers.

Grand Opening In January 2020, CORA's 3rd Early Years program, Early Years Huntingdon Mills, opened at 2137 E. Huntingdon Street, Phila. PA 19125.

The beautiful facility can accommodate 138 children ages 2–5. Our team is working with external service partners to offer a better design for early childhood programming for children with autism and emerging behavioral health needs.

Peer Helpers In October 2019, 73 students from six Catholic schools in Philadelphia gathered at CORA’s headquarters in Northeast Philadelphia for the annual Peer Helper Conference.

Jenée Chizick Agüero, founder of Motivos bilingual youth magazine and related youth empowerment programs, delivered the conference with input from CORA’s Non Public School Services Counseling team.

The theme of the conference was STEP UP AND LEAD. Students stood shoulder to shoulder around the room and took a moment to ponder their charge as peer helpers. “With opportunity comes responsibility,” Chizick Agüero reminded them. “You were each selected for the opportunity to attend today’s conference. It’s now your responsibility to use the skills learned to uplift and inspire your peers.”

Services

Student Assistance Program (SAP) 1,258 requests were received for SAP Assessments and 928 Youth Behavioral Health Assessments were completed for 111 schools. Trained clinicians meet with parents and children (in-person or virtually) to address issues such as mental health and substance use concerns. Services were provided in: 87 School District of Philadelphia Public Schools 15 Charter Schools 9 Archdiocesan High Schools

Youth/Family Counseling Services 89 families were served through the Family Advocate Program. Through regular counseling sessions, our therapists help families address parenting concerns and teach children (ages 5–18) positive coping skills, ways to express and manage sadness and/or anxiety and develop critical decision-making skills.

Teen Intervention Program (TIP) 75 families were served Youth that have been exposed to or experimenting with alcohol or other drugs are educated on the effects of substance use, and taught ways to resist pressure to use substances. Youth with general risk for other problem behaviors were also included.

Mental Health Treatment 191 clients received general mental health treatment or psychiatry support

Drug and Alcohol Treatment 58 clients received drug and alcohol treatment 2 and recovery supports at CORA, The Bridge Way School and selected additional sites. Youth and young adult clients also participated in the agency’s Alternative Peer Group (APG).

Intensive Prevention Services (IPS) 81 youth ages 10–17 were served IPS serves kids who exhibit risk behaviors and steers youth away from delinquency by improving school performance, enhancing life and social skills, and strengthening family relationships.

N CORA was able to safeguard our more than 350 employees through the COVID crisis. Lay-offs and pay cuts and were avoided and we took on additional staff to fill new positions. Having ended the 2020 fiscal year without a deficit is a testament to CORA’s stability and longevity!

N The newest addition to CORA’s broad array of services, The Family Resource Line, was expedited to meet emerging needs during the COVID19 crisis. Callers were connected with one of our professionals with expertise in academics, parenting, early childhood, community resources and more. This effort was supported in part by the IBX Foundation.

N Despite cancelling our spring 2020 golf outing, our golfers and the rest of the caring CORA community decided to “Play it Forward”. Launched in late April, our CORA vs. COVID campaign raised more than $125,000 in private support by June 30, 2020.

H MENTS N In the fall of 2019, AnnMarie Schultz, CEO of CORA Services, introduced “Spirit of Union” as our 2019-2020 agency theme, drawing on this quote from Sisters of the Good Shepherd foundress St. Mary Euphrasia. “ How consoling it is to be all together today! How happy I am, dear daughters, to have you all round me, to see the warm charity, the peace and the spirit of union which reign among us! None are strangers to each other. You are all of one heart and mind.”

In January 2020, CORA established a cross departmental CORE TEAM dedicated to developing a vision and goals surrounding our strategic plan action step of promoting diversity and inclusion in support of CORA’s diverse service population.

N CORA was chosen as the recipient of a 2020 Core

Grant from the Community Design Collaborative which will cover the cost of consulting with experts on the re-conceptualization of our space to accommodate the growth of staff and programs and allow for collaboration across departments to best serve our children and families moving forward.

N CORA’s caring and committed staff went above and beyond this year. When times were tough, they stayed the course and cannot be recognized enough for their bravery, creativity and unwavering dedication to our mission!
