Commodore's Comments

Vice Commodore’s Comments

As the year develops, I am extremely pleased by the work all our Committees have been doing and their accomplishments which are having a real effect on the Club. The Buildings and Grounds and House Committees have the Club looking great and functioning well. The Entertainment Committee has produced the full gamut of parties, from large events, to Lounge Nights and Special Dining Nights. The Family Activities Committee is providing entertainment for the children on a weekly basis, and we now have an Activities Coach on Friday evenings. The Yachting Committee is making a real difference with the docks with significant improvements in the planning. The Cruisers have had great events monthly. The Salary, Wage & Personnel Policy Committee is creating strategies to enhance employee retention. We have several new members being recruited and processed by the Membership Committee. There are other committees working in the background, but very necessary to the function and governance of the Club.

The Club's Long-Range Planning Committee and Board of Governors have chosen a professional club consulting firm to conduct a comprehensive survey of the membership at Coral Ridge Yacht Club as a part of the Strategic Master Plan. We want to receive input from all members and spouses so that we can provide the programs, services and facilities to best meet the needs of the Club and its membership.

As the first step in the survey process, the McMahon Group will conduct three focus group discussions with groups of members and spouses. We are planning to hold these focus groups on Tuesday, April 10th, and Wednesday, April 11th. We hope to get as many members to participate as possible. The purpose of the focus groups is to identify issues to be incorporated in a survey, which will go out to all members. The meetings will last approximately 60 to 90 minutes.

The three groups will have 15 participants each, and the resulting survey will allow all members and spouses to be heard. We look forward to hearing from all of you as the Club moves forward.

I appreciate your input and feel free to contact me at any time. The key to a great Club is member involvement and participation. It is my responsibility with the Board, our committees and staff to provide the opportunity and desire for our members to be involved and participate. We appreciate our members and hope to see everyone at the Club.

Happy Spring to all! This is a time of new beginnings, not only witnessed in the beautiful gifts of nature rising up around us, but also in CRYC itself. Committees are working hard to make improvements that will enhance our appearance, and our staff has addressed the needed repairs head on. During our search for a new GM very little has fallen by the wayside, thanks to Wisly and Cheryl's leadership, and many thanks go to Elizabeth and Donna who are working every day confirming banquets, securing deposits and setting menus, amidst their many other responsibilities. There is a renewed sense of purpose here at CRYC! Your House Committee reviews your comments monthly, takes action to correct the needs and considers your suggestions. One issue that has been bantered about for years is RESERVATIONS. We are finally going to bite the bullet, starting with Friday nights, and priority seating will be given for reservations, so please take heed: If you want to dine in the Wheel Room, then please make a reservation. The front desk will be taking reservations each quarter hour, so please specify the time that you'd like to be seated for dinner (NOT the time you'll be arriving in the Burgee Bar). This will result in a smooth evening, and the dining and kitchen staff will be prepared to deliver a wonderful dinner.

Chef Glenn's Oysters Rockefeller, Mussels Provencal and Steamers have received rave reviews, so he has promised us a Seafood Extravaganza in the next month or so. He's very proactive in delivering our many requests and is purchasing the highest quality products to do so.

Our update of the Burgee Bar is moving along, and many members have commented on the beautiful waxed wood that was hidden for years behind the plaques. By the time we complete the improvements, I'm hoping we will have pleased the majority of members in some way or another. Just remember everything takes time, and change is often good.

Rear Commodore’s Comments

Fleet Captain’s Comments The Club will now have a full time 40-hour-a-week Dock Master to serve the marina, slip holders and transients. Chris Kurtz has been assigned to the position for the present, and we are very pleased to have Chris, who is doing a fantastic job.

We now have four recycle bins placed around the marina and four additional dock carts should be in place by the time you read this column.

The most significant project being undertaken by the Yachting Committee is being led by Abbie McAllister, who is preparing an application for a state grant to fund 75% of the cost to replace and improve the marina’s pump-out system. We hope to use this opportunity to also address long-standing issues involving the appearance and integrity of the seawall.

Another significant project is an effort to make additional space available at the marina to accommodate dinghies and other small boats belonging to members.

The Commodores Lounge was full on Saturday, March 10th for the return, by special request, of Valerio Cantori and his lady Barbara Evans. This was first-class entertainment enjoyed by all.

Everyone certainly was "Irish" on March 17th for our celebration of St. Patrick's Day hosted by Gail and Fleet Captain/Governor Patrick O'Brien. The Scherer Band had everyone singing and dancing for many wild Irish hours. The Sheppard's Pie was the best that I have eaten. The evening truly confirmed the following Irish Blessing.

"May you be poor in misfortune, rich in blessings, slow to make enemies and quick to make friends. May you know nothing but happiness from this day forward."

I wish we were able to award Zagat or Michelin Stars to our Chef Glenn T. Cinguina and our Sommelier Cheryl Brastrom. The Epicurean Evening hosted by Dr. Don Lawrynuik and Cathy Olson, and orchestrated by Wisly Vedrine, was indeed a fête for the "Foodies" and "Wine Connoisseurs" in our midst.

Once again in the Commodores Lounge on March 31st we sang our hearts out to the music of the very talented John Melnick.

Lounge Nights are a great way to relax and enjoy both conversation and special music with special friends. Please check The Log for future lounge events.

On Sunday, April 1st, we have our Easter Sunday Brunch with the Easter Bunny.

On Tuesday, April 3rd, we have the K.I.S.S Seder Dinner hosted by Hedy and Dr. Paul Berman and Arlene and Governor Ron Weitzman.

Country Dance Lessons have been taking place every Wednesday in preparation for "A Little Bit of Country Party" with Claire Petrie on April 7th hosted by Barbara and Governor Larry Bohannon and Pam and Nick Arfaras.

CRYC Women’s Auxiliary

March has been an awesome month for Family Activities! The children have been having a great time participating in sports activities with Coach Oscar on Friday evenings from 6:30 to 9:30.

The Pajama Party and Camp-Out on March 3rd was fantastic. We made s’mores on a firepit, watched a movie under the stars, and some adventurous members camped out on the lawn! If you did not have a chance to attend, we hope you can come next time.

Our First Ladies Tea was a huge success! Many women came dressed as a First Lady, and others came dressed in their most patriotic outfit. Abby McAllister won the Best First Lady Lookalike as Mamie Eisenhower. Jeanette Gray, guest of Dawn Galup, won as best patriotic outfit and Maria Lombard won as best patriotic hat. Ann Hall won $360 on the 50/50 raffle. See some of the photos of winners below.

Bob Hildebidle, FAA Manager at the Miami Airport Air Traffic Control Tower and Radar Facility, informed us about the job of an Air Traffic Controller. There was a great turnout that included members of the Captains’ Club and spouses of our members.

Next month’s meeting, on April 11, 2018, will feature our own member, Kate Nelson, who will speak to us about communicating with the deaf community. Kate is involved in the music industry in California. She will tell us how she combined that with communicating with the deaf.

Auxiliary will not have another scheduled meeting until October, 2018. Look for our article in the summer Logs. We will keep you informed of our fall schedule. We hope you all have an enjoyable summer, and we look forward to seeing you in October!

“Women on the Water”

The Captains’ Club had a great meeting and lunch on March 6th when CRYC Member Kevin Ries gave a most informative and enjoyable presentation on what is involved to be an Honorary Vice Consul with the Consulate General of Luxembourg.

Everyone in attendance now wants to plan a trip to see a small but mighty country. Thank you again, Kevin.

On Wednesday, April 11th, the Auxiliary has invited us to attend their luncheon to hear Club Member Kate Nelson speak about the hearing and non-hearing world. She will have stories about her career in sign language and later in music. Please make reservations.

To all CRYC members, please check The Log and E-mail announcements for the schedule of Captains’ Club events for the coming months. If you would like to make a presentation, or if you have someone to be a speaker, please contact me so a date can be arranged.

Once again, the Captains’ Club is looking forward to having all male CRYC members join us for our Tuesday meetings at 11:30 a.m. in the Wheel Room for a great buffet or lunch from the menu. See you all there.

We are so excited about our upcoming Fashion Show on April 3rd. The fashions will be featured by “Addictions Boutique.” Annie has just reopened her beautiful shop and is so excited to showcase her new fashions. Our own members of Anc’Hers will be walking the catwalk for your enjoyment.

Mark your calendars for April 17th at 11:30 a.m. for our luncheon featuring our own Chef Glenn. He will, once again, share one of his delicious recipes and prepare it as we enjoy each other’s company.

Burgee Spotlight

He’s a curmudgeon! Please join us for our next Book Club meeting on Friday, April 13, 2018 to discuss Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman. Our facilitator is Kay Allen.

Ove is the kind of man who points at people he dislikes as if they were criminals. He has staunch principles, strict routines and a short fuse. However, behind the exterior, there is a story of sadness. Wait and see what happens when Ove meets his new neighbors. Life will change.

Please make reservations at the front desk and, at that time, make your lunch selection from the variety of sandwiches (egg salad, tuna salad, or chicken salad) on white, wheat or rye bread.

A Cobb salad is also available. Lunch is promptly at 12:00 noon when the book discussion begins.

Our May book is The Little Red Chairs by Edna O’Brien. Our facilitator is Pauline Mc Guinness.

COMMODORE TOM AND KAREN VITALE

Our 2018 Commodore Tom and his consort Karen joined Coral Ridge Yacht Club in 2010. In April 2012, they retired from their professions as a surgeon and surgeon’s assistant in St. Louis and moved full-time to their boat, Vital Time, at CRYC. Their burgee represents fulfilling their dream of cruising and exploring the open seas with their constant companions, Buster and Bruno. Buster is now cruising the beautiful calm waters of Heaven as Bruno continues to stand guard over Vital Time and CRYC. Fort Lauderdale’s Fast Signs (954-566-8500) is offering a 10% discount to CRYC members to create your own burgee.

Cruisin’ With The Cruisers

MEMBER REMINDER

Jeff and Nancy Schoenwetter put together a great anchor-out cruise March 9-11. The whole group went to Whiskey Joe’s on Friday night, and a great participation dinner was held on ”Cashin’ In” and ”Yum Yum” Saturday night. We had twelve boats participate, and everyone had a great time. Nancy arranged for us to go to the Seaquarium on Saturday, and 14 of us dinghied over and watched the whales put on a show.

The Penguins looked like they were ready to go to the Commodore’s Ball.

A special thank you to Joe Moseley for making many of the arrangements.

Future Cruises

The Club is so fortunate to have Chef Glenn.

As a help to him for planning purposes, all members are reminded to always make reservations. It is also very important that members specify their entrée choice, when there is one, at least three days in advance of any function.

It is equally important that reservations be made on Tuesdays when the Anc’Hers and Captains’ Club share a speaker so that there is sufficient food on the Buffet for everyone to enjoy. This way the staff can ensure that your dining experience is the very best one possible.

Welcome Aboard New Members A “HEARTY” WELCOME ABOARD GOES OUT TO THE FOLLOWING NEW MEMBERS WHO JOINED THE CLUB EFFECTIVE APRIL 1, 2018:

Spring is definitely in the air here at Coral Ridge Yacht Club!

This month we have Easter and Passover and lots of fun, social events planned for adults and families. The Family Activities on Friday night are a must for families; we even have a coach helping with group physical activities for the kids. Some other must-not-miss events are the Country Party to show off your dance moves and Italian Night hosted by Vince and Alexis Promuto which is always delizioso! (that is Italian for delicious). So get ready to have some fun with your friends and family here at the Club.

Membership numbers are holding steady – as we have three (3) new members joining us this month. We have Kelly Kugler and Dr. Omar Rashid who both work at the Cancer Center at Holy Cross Hospital and are engaged to be married in May of this year. So, make sure when you see them you wish them well with their upcoming nuptials. We also have Melissa and Timothy Hyland who have moved recently to Victoria Park and have a seven year old daughter, Grace, who goes to St. Anthony School. Melissa has grown up in Yacht Clubs in Newport, Rhode Island and St. Martin and knows how to fly a plane, drive fast on a race track and sail.

Ask her about it when you see her. Finally, we have Richard Barnhart who is a single dad of Reece (seven years old), and is a Broker/ Owner/Realtor at By The Sea Realty, Inc. in Lauderdale-by-the-Sea. He has a 35 foot Contender and is looking forward to meeting other like-minded boaters.

As we gear down our Season here in Florida and hurdle towards our hot summer months, remember to always be an ambassador for our Club. Speak highly of the friendships, fun and memories you have created here and continue to create. People are looking for connections and deep relationships with others, and we offer that in spades. This is the place where memories are made, and you are the embodiment of this Club in real time. So, speak of it often, brag about it on Social Media and spread the word.

We, together, are planting seeds, sharing our stories and love of CRYC, and these seeds will one day prove fruitful! Let’s make this the best year for membership yet!

They enjoy boating, fishing, golf, cooking and traveling. They will marry this May.

Chef Glenn’s Recipe Of The Month

I recently had an opportunity to give a brief presentation to the Captains’ Club and Anc’Hers outlining the goals and accomplishments of the CRYC Sailing & Watersports Foundation. The event was well attended, and I hope that I provided everyone with a better understanding of the Foundation and addressed all questions. If you would like a better understanding of the Foundation, please contact me.

We have set Saturday, October 21, 2018 as the 2018 “Party with a Purpose.” Last year’s party was an unqualified success, but we intend to raise the bar this year and do even better. Please save this date and plan on attending. It’s a fun night and helps to support a very worthwhile charity.

Reservations for this event are being accepted. You can assist us with your tax deductible contribution and help us to obtain suitable items for a silent auction. Don’t forget that all contributions go towards obtaining or enhancing your signature brick by the fountain.

In addition to our ongoing scholarship sailing and summer programs, we plan on expanding the programs offered.

New programs, such as adult and child swimming instructions, both on-site and offshore snorkeling instruction and fishing instruction and events, are planned. We are currently providing instruction on Saturday for sailing. During the summer we will be providing our five day-a-week sailing lessons, which will include advanced training this year. This is a great opportunity for members to have their children or grandchildren participate. It’s fun and educational.

The Foundation has provided paddle boards, a Capri sailboat and kayaks to the Club. They are free to use. If you’re interested, just make arrangements to check them out at the front desk.

Remember, this is YOUR FOUNDATION.

Filet of Sole with Ginger Cucumber Salad Ingredients 2 tbsp. rice vinegar 1 tbsp. grated ginger 2 tbsp. olive oil 1 tsp. olive oil Kosher salt to taste Pepper to taste 1 bunch radishes – washed, sliced thin 1 small seedless cucumber – washed, dried, peeled and thinly sliced 4 oz. snow peas – washed and trimmed ½ small sweet onion – peeled, sliced thin 4 pieces of filet of sole – pin bones removed ¼ cup thinly sliced fresh mint Method of Preparation 1. In a large bowl, whisk together the vinegar, ginger and 2 tablespoons oil.

2. Add the radishes, cucumber, snow peas and onion and toss to combine.

3. Season with salt and pepper.

4. Heat the remaining tsp. oil in a large non-stick skillet over medium heat.

5. Season the fish with salt and pepper and cook until golden brown and opaque throughout, 3 to 4 minutes per side.

7. Lay the cooked fish filets on a serving platter and top with the cucumber and radish salad.
