W ISHING GOOD LUCK TO ALL 2019 ORANGE BOWL SAILORS!

from

THE FLAG OFFICERS OF

CORAL REEF YACHT CLUB

THE HISTORY OF THE ORANGE BOWL INTERNATIONAL YOUTH REGATTA

The first Orange Bowl Regatta originated in 1945 when founder, Alex Balfe, put together a group of sailors who frequently vacationed in Miami, Florida during the winter months. Lester Johnson introduced the idea of a youth regatta on Biscayne Bay through the established name of the Orange Bowl Regatta in 1974. The purpose of the youth regatta was to organize a youth sporting event during a time when families were looking for a fun pastime during their winter break. The Orange Bowl International Youth Regatta has continued through today representing a 45 year commitment of promoting youth sailing.

The Orange Bowl International Youth Regatta is part of the many sporting events associated with the Orange Bowl college football game each year in Miami. Sailors between the ages of 8 to 18 years old can compete. The regatta has grown from 450 youth sailors in 2002 to 660 in 2018. In the past five years, this regatta has reached higher international proportions. For 2018, competitors came from 21 countries and from 26 states in the U.S. This is the largest youth sailing event in North or South America and the second largest event of its kind in the world. The regatta has competitors from as far away as Israel, Japan, Europe and South America.

The regatta has been able to thrive through generous support from the U.S. Sailing Center and Shake-A-Leg Miami, in partnership with Coral Reef Yacht Club, to create an optimal sailing venue for our competitors. Generous financial support from companies have also enabled this event to grow and become what it is today. We appreciate our sponsors for making this incredible event possible! 31
