Love Your
Cats?
Don't Let them Roam
Before I begin, I need to clarify: I love cats. In fact, I have two of them myself! One of them is perfectly content sitting around the house, snoozing, eating, and purring all day long. The other? Well, she bolts for the great outdoors every chance she gets. Cats are natural hunters; they love to roam and stalk and chase birds and rodents even when they’re not hungry. As much as I would love to fulfill her dreams of being a vicious neighborhood predator – I know that if I love my cats, I’ll keep them both inside. Domestic cats are not a natural part of our habitat. Native birds, rodents, and other small mammals are not adapted to being hunted by cats, which makes them incredibly vulnerable. Domestic cats are also highly susceptible to a number of diseases that they can be exposed to in the wild. If your furry friend wanders into another cat’s territory and is attacked, then any bite or scratch

can potentially carry a harmful and permanent illness.
As a cat owner, I understand the guilty feeling that comes with seeing your cats when they’re bored and staring out the window. Luckily, there are many indoor options available to keep your pets busy, active, and satisfied. Lets get the obvious one out of the way: cats love their toys. Mice on a string, a laser pointer on the wall, or even a small stuffie to bat around the house – I once kept my cats busy for 30 minutes by dangling a sock in the air and letting them leap for it! Here are some other cat essentials: a scratching post – cats need an appropriate place to stretch and sharpen those claws; some cat nip – make sure to use it sparingly; a spray bottle – nothing will discourage a cat from scratching the couch or climbing on the table quite like a gentle shot of water.

Taking Your Cat Outside
It is important to note that letting your cat roam is not the same as taking them outside. There are full body harnesses and retractable leashes available for taking your cats out for a stroll. Just make sure that they don’t come into contact with any stray cats or any smaller animal that they might consider a good meal. Finally, for those with a backyard, there is a more permanent option available. A cat kennel or a “catio” built onto the back of the house is a great way to let cats outside when they please, but offers peace of mind that they will be safe. These kennels can be built to allow access from a window, or built as a standalone area in the backyard. There are many examples to be found online ranging from a simple kennel wrapped in chicken wire, to an extravagant cat-sized mansion. Cats are fantastic pets; there really is no better feeling than having your furry pal curled in your lap, purring away. Keep them healthy, keep them inside.
