Christmas Tree

Facts

• The first decorated Christmas tree was in Riga, Latvia in 1510. • Approximately 100,000 people are employed full or part-time in the Christmas tree industry. • The most popular Christmas trees are: Scotch pine, Douglas fir, noble fir, Fraser fir, balsam fir, Virginia pine and white pine. • Besides evergreens, other types of trees such as cherry and hawthorns were used as Christmas trees in the past. • Today, most artificial Christmas trees are made from PVC plastic. PVC trees are fire-retardant but not fire-resistant. Eighty percent of artificial trees worldwide are manufactured in China. • Real Trees are a renewable, recyclable resource. Artificial trees contain non-biodegradable plastics and possible metal toxins such as lead. • It can take as many as 15 years to grow a tree of typical height (6-7 feet) or as little as 4 years, but the average growing time is 7 years. • Since 1947, the tree in London’s Trafalgar Square has been a gift each year from the city of Oslo, Norway. • Real Christmas trees came eighth in a survey of the nation’s favorite smells in 2004, just behind the sea but ahead of perfume. • The average Christmas tree contains about 30,000 bugs and insects. • Manufactured tree ornaments were first sold by Woolworths in 1880.

A German immigrant from Wooster, Ohio decorated his Christmas tree with candy canes. • The red and white striped candy canes were first made around 1900. • The traditional candy cane flavor is peppermint, however, it is also made in a variety of other flavors and colored stripes. • Over 1.76 billion candy canes are made each year. • The biggest candy cane ever made was 51 feet long • Candy canes are sometimes as a topping for foods such as ice cream or as an additive to drinks such as hot chocolate. Once Upon A Christmas Time

D

ecember always seems to arrive all too soon, and the Canada Day celebrations are almost over until the next time. The start of Christmas shopping is well underway. Families and friends are rushing in and out of stores and malls with pen and paper in hand, all trying to avoid those returnable items before Boxing Day arrives. Once in the mall, it's time to find Santa and his reindeer. The children, especially the very young, always like to sit on Santa's knee and have a photograph taken. As we leave the stores behind, but not forgetting on the way out to give some consideration to those less fortunate, to the Salvation Army Kettle fund. On our way home we should pause a while and think of all the police, fireman, ambulance staff, hospital nurses and doctors who

have to remain on call through-out the Christmas holidays. Now that we have arrived safely home, it's time to start on the outdoors. Providing the weather conditions are in your favour, lighting decorations are a good place to start. Some people have a head start in this area, and leave their Christmas lights in place all year round.

Having finished that job, and before shutting the front door, it's time to add a wreath to create a warm welcome to visitors upon entering. Many folks like to have a real tree, on the other hand

if you already have the artificial kind it makes the job a lot easier. Decorating for Christmas is much more fun and so many special ornaments to hang on the tree. The tree needs a lot of care to straighten things out but, when it's done it stands out above everything and becomes a total curiosity for cats, dogs, and the whole family, as to what goes underneath it - it's a complete surprise.

Before the special day arrives we have to pick up our turkey, as it's already in the grocery store freezer, waiting for us. To add to the shopping list is cranberry www.copyworksconnection.com

chocolate cornflakes, and rice crispy squares.

Rum, Baileys Irish Cream, and a choice of wines. The kitchen is always busy and this time of year is no exception. It's nice to have lots of help, a good plan, and enough time to fill all the requests. Everything has to come together with all the ingredients made ready. The Plum Pudding will need some Rum, the mince pies are next, followed by shortbread cookies, date squares,

full, we have to start out early. This is a time of celebration, remembrance, and to honour the men and woman, who have given so much of themselves. Today we live in somewhat difficult times, but strong in spirit, faith, and hope that peace will prevail.

Before Christmas Eve is over, there is one more special thing to do. Our local church is holding a candle light service. The parking lot will be
