THE REGIONAL INNOVATION NETWORK IN SOUTHEAST ALBERTA
By Elizabeth Blair The Regional Innovation Network can help you bring ideas to life. The network was founded in 2010 when Alberta Innovates began to formulate a plan for an integrated provincial support system that would assist and support the growth of innovative and technology-oriented businesses in Alberta. This provincial support system is known as the Alberta Regional Innovation Network System and is made up of a group of smaller Regional Innovation Networks (RINs). A Regional Innovation Network is defined as a group of like-minded organizations in a region which will collaborate to put their collective 8

resources together to support and improve the development of innovations among small and medium-sized businesses (SMEs). Our RIN, in Southeast Alberta, evolved from the Southeast Alberta Technology Project, which was later branded APEX Alberta. The Regional Innovation Networks or RINs were formed as a collaboration of local agencies interested in economic development through innovation, technology and entrepreneurship. RINs will provide or act as a connector for the SME to a suite of business service offerings that www.digitalcopyworks.com
may be found either in the region or across the province. Services such as 3D Printing, employer training, access to capital as well as access to world class researchers are just some of the offerings to be found within the RINs. These services will assist SMEs in their efforts to become world class, by helping them to commercialize their innovative product or technology which will lead to the growth of that company in Alberta. Did you know that there is a Regional Innovation Network in the regions of and surrounding: Calgary, Edmonton, Fort McMurray, Grande Prairie, Medicine Hat, Lethbridge, Lloydminster and Red Deer? These various RINs collaborate across regions and are able to draw on each other’s resources to ensure that entrepreneurial needs are met throughout the province. If our RIN cannot offer the needed services locally, we will work with our Alberta partners to refer a business to the correct contact.
