With 2017 being Canada's 150th birthday, this year is special. We can reflect this milestone by remembering how we celebrated the World Exhibition in Montreal 50 years ago. This event was also timely for us to mark the 100th Anniversary of Confederation.

To accommodate the 62 participating Nations, it was required to enlarge these Islands with 25 million tons of fill, a large part of that coming from excavated material out of Montreal's new Metro-subway project.

The approval and start-up for the exhibition was given on November 13th, 1962. This massive amount of work was the determination of Mayor of Montreal Jean Drapeau.

This was the first time an International Exhibition was being assembled with each country; Not only designing their own pavilion, but constructing it as well. All the additional facilities had to be built, such as roads, bridges, rail connections, hotels, restaurants, safety and security – all had to be taken care of and

put in place.

The logo was designed by Montreal artist Julien Hébert. The basic unit of the logo is an ancient symbol of man/ Two of the symbols (pictograms of "man") are linked as to represent friendship. The icon was repeated in a circular arrangement to represent "Friendship around the world".

As Expo '67 begun to grow, so did the estimates – to $500 million. This did not include the 16 miles of new Metro-Subway or the Centennial train, which traveled the country end to end. This was a massive amount of planning, construction and a show place like no other. www.copyworksconnection.com

We as Canadians always seem to sell ourselves short, and cannot boast as we already have it - The second largest country in the world. The official opening of Montreal Expo was on April 27th, 1967, by Roland Michener, Canada's Governor General, followed by Prime Minister Lester B. Pearson. 53 heads of state, 7,000 media, and invited guests were on hand for this day. Expo '67 was open for the general public on April 28th, and set a single day attendance record. On the third day, 569,500 visitors was more than any other world fair.

of times. It solidified that we were still one nation – until President of France, Charles De Gaulle announced Quebec should be free. The aftermath was considerable, and to think this man had been accommodated in the safety of London while the Germans invaded Paris during WWII.

For those of us who remember Expo '67, to repeat an exhibition on such a scale would be unthinkable in todays economic climate.

To commemorate Expo '67, Canada Post issued several stamps.

The Canadian flag unfurled in the wind celebrating Canada's Centenary.

This celebration was completed when the population of Canada was only 20 million, and half of its people were under the age of 25.

Canada's senior representative to the Queen who died just prior to the opening of Expo '67.

Commemorating the Montreal visit of Queen Elizabeth II who attended the opening of Expo '67.

The exhibition was visited by many notable people – Queen Elizabeth II, Prince Philip, President Lyndon B. Johnson, Princess Grace of Monaco, Jackie Kennedy, Charles De Gaulle, Bing Crosby, Maurice Chevalier, and Marlene Dietrich, to name a few.

The Centennial Symbol was seen everywhere across the country, along with the new Canadian Flag.

The Expo was the best of times, but also the worst

and to what may become the last good year.

The design of the symbol was built from eleven triangles, one for each province and one for the territories. This Expo had become entrenched with Canadians

What, in 50 years time, will our next centennial be like in 2067? And where will it be built?

Building the Pipelines to Prosperity –

A HISTORY OF CANADIAN ENERGY

Written by Drew Barnes, Shadow Minister of Energy

I

t is no secret that Alberta is, and has historically been, the powerhouse of the Canadian economy.

With vast natural resources and a robust workforce, Alberta has supplied wealth, jobs and capital to the rest of Canada for generations. As the Shadow Minister of Energy for the Wildrose Official Opposition, I am so proud of our energy sector and all of the people who work tirelessly to make sure that the lights stay on and our homes stay warm. Over the last 150 years, the Canadian Energy Sector has changed quite substantially. When settlers

came to Canada, oil was not being used in the way that we use it now, however our Indigenous people were innovative and used it in alternative ways. There are historical accounts of Indigenous Canadians using the tar-like residue that seeped out of the ground for oiling canoes, lubricating wounds and even used it as a currency in the Fur Trade. Medicine Hat, commonly regarded as “the Gas City” had a very important role in the development of the Canadian energy sector

as well. As the story goes, in 1883, a CPR work crew accidentally came across Natural Gas around the Langevin Siding. By the 1890s, they soon realized the value of their discovery and soon the entire town was being powered by natural gas for everything from cooking to heating their home. Medicine Hat is so well known for its booming industry that it has been celebrated in Ripley’s Believe it or Not and praised by author Rudyard Kipling. Another major point of discovery was the Athabasca Oilsands, in 1894. Settlers and geologists were www.copyworksconnection.com

amazed by the potential of the oilsands almost immediately as they watched and observed petroleum residues seeping out of the earth. Quite arguably, the greatest feat occurred when engineers figured out how to extract the bitumen from the oilsands and refine it into a marketable, usable product. As for the rest of the province, the moment of greatest impact for our Oil and Gas Sector is commonly regarded as the Leduc No. 1 discovery. On February 13, 1947 oil was discovered in a little town outside of Edmonton and began the first oil boom in Western Canada. This boom was the beginning of a healthy economy for Canada and helped to establish Alberta as an economic engine for the country providing thousands of jobs, especially after the Second World War, when many people were coming back from the military looking for new ways to

establish themselves and provide for their families. Lately, especially if you are paying attention to the mainstream media, it is evident that our oilsands and industry are at the brunt of unwarranted criticism. Further, our energy producers, and workers, are constantly being bombarded by politicians and celebrity activists coming to our province and vilifying the very industries that, quite literally, fuel the rest of our nation. I am so proud to have

the most ethical oil in the world. I am confident that our industry will continue to serve Alberta, and the rest of Canada, for decades to come. Our future will be made and shaped by strong minds and involvement from scientists, engineers and hard working men and women. From the men and women wearing hard-hats to the executives in offices in downtown Calgary, our Oil and Gas sector is a worldclass industry and provides a great standard of living to hundreds of thou-

by Gillian Reimer, Head of Marketing Services

Stop me if you’ve heard this one before. Why did the chicken cross the road? To make someone $5,000 richer by pooing on the Giant Chess Board, of course! Yes you read that right, I made a poo joke. And yes, someone will be made $5,000 richer on July 27th! Curious? Continue reading. Cock-a-doodle-poo is a fundraiser we are undertaking here at the Medicine Hat Public Library to help fund the approximately $150,000 outstanding on our theatre renovation. It will also be a fun way for us to kick-off the 130th Medicine Hat Exhibition & Stampede since the event takes place following the parade on Thursday, July 27.

The idea is simple, really: we will section off the Giant Chess Board into 500 squares, release a chicken, and wait for it to poo. If you are the proud owner of the square where the chicken poos (trust me, you will be dang proud of that chicken) – you win $5,000!

20 Copy Works CONNECTION Issue 07/17

During the event (if you call waiting for a chicken to poo an “event”) we will be entertained by Steve Krysak, 102.1 CJCY Morning Show co-host. He will be wearing his finest chicken suit, telling his funniest fowl jokes, and will have the crowd doing www.copyworksconnection.com

their best chicken dance. Tickets are $20, all proceeds support the Library. Stop by the Library or visit us at the Cypress Centre during the Farmers’ Market on Saturdays to buy a ticket. Only 500 tickets are available so the odds of the chicken pooing on your square are pretty dang good. Speaking of parade day fun, we are also holding our annual member appreciation pancake breakfast that morning in our parking lot. From 7:00 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. we will be serving up pancakes, sausages, coffee/juice, and smiles to parade goers. We also have live entertainment, a bouncy castle, and other fun activities for the kids.

Breakfast is free for those who show a valid library card (so don’t forget to bring it). For anyone who does not have a library card (gasp), we will still serve you but it will cost $5.00 (comes with a coupon to renew for a membership). I will be on the front lines during the pancake breakfast and would love to see you there! I would also greatly appreciate your support of our fundraising efforts. As mentioned above, your support will help us complete our theatre renovation. The

renovation will not only fix cosmetic issues due to aging, it will improve accessibility for those with mobility issues and hearing impairment. If you are passionate about improving access to public spaces for all people, please consider donating to our renovation fund and/or purchasing a cock-a-doodle-poo ticket. Thank you!

How you choose to pass your assets on to your children is your personal decision and can be done in a variety of ways. It’s often beneficial to discuss your plans with your kids – to allow you to clearly convey your intentions, develop a philosophy regarding the family legacy, discuss any concerns about protecting their inheritance and maintain family harmony. Once your estate plan and will are in place, review them every few years to make sure that if your family circumstances have changed, your current situation and wishes are reflected.

Estate planning for blended families If you have a blended family, where some or all of the children are not the natural or adopted children of both spouses, a standard will may not be 24 Copy Works CONNECTION Issue 07/17

appropriate if you want to ensure that children of both spouses receive part of the combined estates. Possible options include spouse or common-law partner trusts, dividing the assets between the spouse and children, and using life insurance to satisfy all beneficiaries.

Canadians buy insurance, but is it the right coverage? Providing and caring for one’s family is the job of a parent, and this extends to making sure the family is taken care of should you be in the position to no longer provide for them. If we lose a loved one, a large nest egg isn’t the answer, however it sure can help. You work hard, so make sure that hard work is safeguarded against events you cannot foresee, such as: • An accident resulting in injury • A critical illness • Losing a loved one

Not all life insurance is created equal One of the fortunate things about having such a well-developed insurance industry here in Canada, is choice. The unfortunate thing is most people don’t know that there are choices. There are

many different options out there when it comes to protecting your assets, income, and eventually your estate. Contact an insurance professional at Investors Group today to learn about your many different options.
