The

Language of Cats

hough owning and loving any pet is wonderful, there is indeed something special about being a cat person. Cats choose us and to be in a relationship with a cat is something special. So for those of you who own other animals or are thinking of being owned by a cat, here is a primer on their secret language. Of course, when I speak of a secret cat language, I am also referring to the secret language of humans with their cats, as we all come up with

a kind of lingua franca, a common way of communicating that is unique each cat/ owner bond. So the secret language of cats is really the language of our relationships. First of all, it is important to understand that cats often do things that look like one thing but are actually something else. For example, when a cat flops down and exposes their belly they, unlike dogs, are not looking for a belly rub. Cats are saying that

COMMUNITY

"Cats often do things that look like one thing but are actually something else." they are friendly and their lying on their back is a sign that they are not dangerous, as opposed to standing up with an arched back, which means they are prepared to be aggressive. This is why when you go to scratch their belly while they are on their back they will kick your hand back with their legs. If you and the cat have known each other for a long time and the cat knows you are not being aggressive by trying to scratch their belly they will take it as a sign of play and will still gently “attack” your hand. Cats will also flop on their back and expose their belly to demonstrate they are ready to use all four of their paws at once to defend themselves, so reading the cat’s overall mood is important when the cat is in this position.

from a cat that they love you. This means that they will get the same message if you do a slow blink right back. And if you want to add even more love to the moment, hold a finger or your hand out and let them sniff it and/or rub their cheek against it. This double gesture signals to the cat that you are reciprocating their love, and want to be a scent companion.

Most importantly though, cats have a very specific way of saying ‘I love you’ that even most cat owners are unaware of. If you are facing a cat, looking at their face, they will do a slow blink. Though this looks like a mere blink, it is a major signal

Secondly, cats scent things with their paws and cheeks, not just their urine. This is why cats rub their cheeks against objects and people; not just as a sign of affec-

Why Artificial Grass? Let’s talk about the benefits of artificial grass. It is not for everyone. Some people like to cut their lawn. Artificial grass lawns offer a beautiful, low maintenance alternative to natural grass with many benefits. It is a responsible landscape option with the environment in mind. Artificial grass is ideal for people on the go who really don’t want the upkeep of a high maintenance yard. If you are a dog owner and tired of battling the never ending brown spots, synthetic grass is a great option for the back yard or a specific dog run. Perhaps a putting green is an idea if you are an avid golfer. Synthetic grass is a great alternative around pools. The options are endless. Artificial grass not only looks wonderful, but it can offer the environment some well-deserved water conservation and chemi12

PET DIRECTORY 2017

COMMUNITY cal free maintenance based on a recycled product. Sounds great right, let’s get into some details. Synthetic grass looks real without the hassles of upkeep. Technology has really helped in developing some very realistic grass. Gone are the days of the indoor-outdoor carpet look. Todays Synthetic Lawn have light and dark blades of grass at different lengths and realistic thatch of brown and green tones, all of which produce a perfect duplicated look of the original. It is sometimes hard to see the difference. Manufacturers have really done their homework in making the most realistic product backed with excellent warranties. Synthetic grass is made out of many recyclable products, essentially bottles. Products such as ForeverLawn consist of 75% by weight recycled material and incorporate soy beans in the backing which are a 100% renewable resource. Artificial grass is also recognized as a material that contributes to sustainable building with a LEED building rating. It can help green builders meet the guidelines to produce some of the most sustainable buildings possible.

spend less time mowing, edging, and seeding brown spots left by the dog. Maintaining a natural grass lawn requires a variety of fertilizers, pesticides, and weed killing chemicals to keep the grass looking its best. A synthetic turf landscape eliminates the need for these lawn care chemicals, keeping them out of the yard and out of children and pets harm while doing your part for the environment. Homeowners no longer have to start up the stinky, noisy Lawn mower or Lawn trimmer, not unless waking the neighbors is part of your Saturday morning. On average, people spend 40hrs of their time maintain a beautiful yard edging and mowing. Enjoying your Saturday morning reading the paper and a coffee sounds more appealing to me. Synthetic grass is a realistic option in creating beautiful landscapes without the time and maintenance involved. While it may not be for everyone, there are many benefits to a homeowner’s lifestyle and it offers a wonderful alternative in sustaining the environment. Enjoy your Yard!

The best part of artificial grass is you don’t have to water it. They stay green, lush and beautiful all year, an inviting look after a long winter. Water conservation can mean many things to homeowners. Saving money is first on the list. Watering lawns in the summer account for a huge percentage of your water bill. The cost savings can be substantial. The Synthetic Turf Council has estimated that the use of artificial grass has resulted in billions of conserved water per year. Not only do you save money on water bills, but some cities have gone so far as to offer rebates and credits to residents installing artificial turf. There is no doubt that the homeowner will

Alberta Pound and Rescue Centre

The Alberta Pound and Rescue Centre was founded to provide the best possible care to the lost and homeless animals of Medicine Hat. Whether an animal wandered away from their loving home and is waiting to be reunited or looking for a new home to take them in we will be there to help. Whenever an animal is brought to us by Medicine Hat Bylaw services or by members of the public we do our best to return them to their owners. It is always easier to reunite pets with their owners when they are tattooed, microchipped, or wearing their city license. In these cases, it also makes the reclaim process much easier so we always recommend microchipping your pet. When there is nothing to lead us to an owner we post pictures and descriptions on social media. The great people of Medicine Hat who like and share our posts have helped return

many pets to their loving homes. Sadly, many of the animals that come through our doors are homeless and have no one to care for them. For these animals we spay/neuter, microchip, vaccinate, and deworm them before putting them up for adoption. Everyone here at APARC loves to see our animals go on to good homes where they can be truly happy. We also provide emergency care for many animals. Roaming the streets can be very dangerous for domestic animals so we are here to ensure they receive the necessary medical attention when accidents happen. We are proud to say we have never euthanized an animal for space, and with the help of the community we can keep that going. Our caring staff and amazing volunteers work hard to find homes for as many animals as possible. Though sometimes it is necessary to transfer some to other shelters and

rescue organizations. To minimize euthanasia, we started a barn buddies program so cats who do not enjoy human companionship have a chance at a happy life chasing mice. Because we believe in being accountable to the community every month we post a transparency report on our Facebook page so everyone can see our numbers.

The large team of veterinarians has allowed each Dr. to find their surgical strong point and work towards offering services with continuing education and other additional learning opportunities. Aside from specialty services we offer preventative care in order to keep your pet in top condition throughout the years. Preventative visits address everything from vaccination against common diseases, and an examination from nose to tail. Items such as dental care, skin care, and nutrition are common topics during these visits. This is also a great time to have any questions

NOW OFFERING - K9 REHABILITATION THERAPY TREATMENTS

If dogs had their way, I'm sure there are things they wish we would do to make their lives less complicated. We are constantly doing things that confuse the heck out of them and we wonder why they are "misbehaving".

This is probably the number one thing on the dog's list. If we would always use one command to mean one thing, life would be so much easier. For instance, DOWN means lay down. It doesn't mean get off the cupboard. It doesn't mean stop jumping on people. Don't give your dog mixed messages.

Let's say you start a new job. You sit at a desk...but no one ever comes to explain your duties. The boss starts yelling at you for not doing any work. That's what we do to our dogs. We don't teach them what we expect and then get angry at them for not getting it right.

20

PET DIRECTORY 2017

Dogs are a different species. They are not human. Surprised? They have different instincts, communication skills and rituals. Do you circle the toilet three times before you use it? Think of them as coming from a different culture... or another planet. We need to help them fit into our human world in such a way that we can live together harmoniously. Dogs use their mouths to investigate. They need to chew. Don't punish them for chewing your yummy leather shoe... teach them what they are allowed to chew on. Dogs use their mouths when they play. They don't understand that teeth on human skin hurts. Don't punish them for biting, it's a natural play instinct ... teach them to inhibit their bite. Get the gist? Oh...and be consistent

COMMUNITY

Listen by watching.

People often say their dog reacts to other dogs approaching because they are being protective. That is not their job - it's yours. Learn to take charge. If there is a potential threat, step between your dog and the approaching danger. Don't be afraid to ask other owners to keep their dogs away.

Yawning, ears pinned back and lip licking are signs that your dog is stressed. Hard eyes, ears alert and heightened posture is your dog's way of saying back off. You should remove your dog from the situation that is causing them grief. If you're not paying attention, expect your dog to react in a manner you won't like.

Don't put your dog in dangerous situations such as a down stay outside a store while you run inside. Someone may accidentally step on your dog or some kids may start teasing the dog. Any dog, given the right circumstances, will bite. If you leave them vulnerable, they may be forced to protect themselves.

The more you watch, the more you will understand what they are trying to tell you.

That's your job.

Dogs are masters of body language - their number one method of communication. You can learn to understand them by paying attention to the signals they are giving.

“Properly trained...a human can be a dog's best friend.” Helping dog owners build a relationship with their dogs through positive training and understanding.

MEDICINE HAT OFF-LEASH DOG PARKS The City of Medicine Hat provides residents and visitors with more than 1,500 hectares of land where dogs are allowed off-leash. These areas are multi-use, border residences, and include much of the Leisure Trail System. Off-leash areas in Medicine Hat are Environmental Reserve areas distributed throughout the city. These are the only areas where dogs are allowed to be off-leash while in public; dogs are required to be on-leash in the rest of the city. Following the rules for use and practicing good etiquette will help ensure that all users have a positive experience.

“OFF-LEASH RULES & ETIQUETTE” Owners must keep their dogs on-leash unless they are within a designated off-leash area. Owners are required to clean up after their dog immediately, as well as carry a suitable means of removal and disposal Respect all other trail users. Stay alert for other trail traffic and walk on the right to reduce the chance of accidents. Dogs should always be in sight of their owners. If you can’t see them, you are not in control. 22
