US Politics Obscuring Important Topics Closer to Home by Drew Barnes, MLA Cypress-Medicine Hat

home.

It seems these days that many Albertans have found rich entertainment watching American politics. Love or dislike what is happening south of the border, it is obscuring two things that are important, closer to

First, for many years, there were three big names in Canadian conservative politics. Former Prime Minister Harper was one of these big names. His unfortunate defeat in 2015 reminds us that a steady, fiscally prudent eye on our hard-earned tax dollars, with an ear to needs of the West, was better for our economy. Less debt liability for future generations is something that Canadians value and is something that we owe to those who will come after us.

January 27th ends the Saskatchewan premiership of the second well-known and admired Canadian conservative. Many of us are fans of Brad Wall because he has always been the strongest advocate for our energy sector, the economic needs of the West, rural life and agriculture. I was especially impressed that, in his last budget, he achieved balance, shared the pain among many, and protected front line workers and necessary services. He demonstrated that you can be fiscally responsible without taking away the top of the line services that his people enjoy. His commitment to making tough decisions and not kick the debt and deficit “can down the road” to our kids and grandkids is a strong, admirable achievement. Our Swift Current neighbor did his province well! The third, and deservedly lauded Canadian conservative, is new UCP leader Jason Kenney. His reputation for team building, consistent conservative values and hard work are exemplified by remarkable achievements. His resume is impressive including his performance record as the Minister of National Defense, Minister of Citizenship and Immigration, and Minister of Employment. Perhaps his most impressive achievement may be uniting conservatives in Alberta, winning two leadership races, and becoming an MLA—all within a year. We don’t want to miss this amazing opportunity Albertans now have to give support to the only remaining of the three big conservative names actively working for a stronger, fiscally conservative Alberta. In Cypress-Medicine Hat, what I am asking for is as much help as possible to ensure that our ideas, values and policy are front and center in the new UCP party policy. This means an opportunity for families, communities and economic opportunity to become our guiding focus once again! 4 Copy Works CONNECTION www.copyworksconnection.com

Speaking as a conservative Albertan focused on limited government and local decision making, I believe we need to look to enhance our social safety net through better supported community groups. This gives Albertans the ability to become self-reliant and exercise the utmost personal freedom. This will allow us to become the strongest voice in all of Canada for jobs, opportunity, and more disposable income for families. The second important economic consideration taking place on this side of the border being obscured by our captivation with American politics is the enormous accumulating debt in Alberta. It is hard to fathom that we went from $7 billion in net assets in May of 2015 to being burdened by $50 billion in debt today. This astronomical debt that our Premier has accumulated means that families will be burdened with $2 billion in annual interest payments for years. Our NDP government is now faced with a dramatic American tax overhaul that will keep more money in the pockets of investors, drive up job creation decrease taxes on average people, and, perhaps what is most concerning, will surely reduce Alberta’s competitiveness and chances to attract investment and jobs.

“We need to make sure that the next generation can be empowered to succeed instead of playing the dangerous game of “kick the big spending, whimsical debt can down the road”. “

All three Canadian conservatives mentioned have something in common – incredibly scrupulous attention to the economic well-being of the next generation. If there is anything that politicians should agree on, be it socialist or free-enterprise, it is this: We need to make sure that the next generation can be empowered to succeed instead of playing the dangerous game of “kick the big spending, whimsical debt can down the road”. It is my hope that your UCP team can continue to put pressure on this government and continue to be the advocates for the economy that Albertans deserve.

Happy New Year! Welcome to 2018. The New Year has many of us thinking about resolutions: new goals, plans, commitments, ways to make this year the

best yet! My suggestion: rather than resolving to fix, change, or overhaul ourselves, lets resolve to become enriched. Enrich our lives with things that will make us happier and healthier. Rather than

focusing on losing weight, for example, focus on living a healthier lifestyle. Rather than resolving to break a bad habit, resolve to make yourself happier by getting rid of bad influences. Our resolution? To help you become enriched. Because that will help us to feel enriched.

THINKING LOCAL, SUPPO South Country Co-op had an exciting and successful 2017; the opening of our brand new corporate office located at 969 16 St SW Medicine Hat on May 29th was just one in a substantial list of expansions. We acquired an eighth liquor store in our chain in Lethbridge, located at 1515 Mayor Magrath Drive South, which is also our third in that city. Our Agro centres were rounded up to 10 with the addition of two agro facilities located in Lomond, AB, and Foremost, AB.

16

Two brand new cardlock stations joined our growing family, one in Bow Island, AB and the other in Taber, AB bringing the cardlock total to 15 sites. South Country Co-op’s Northlands Food Centre went through a $6 million dollar renovation to better serve our members in Medicine Hat, AB. We’re incredibly proud to say that 98% of the construction was completed by local contractors and tradespeople. Our new stores and facilities helped to increase our sales in 2017 by over

15%, which translates to almost $70 million dollars. This helped us to employ an additional 26 people across our service area. In 2018, we’re not slowing down! In April 2017, we announced a partnership with the Canalta Group to build a gas bar, convenience store, car wash, and liquor store next to the Group’s new hotel to be located on Strachan Road in Medicine Hat. We paid back over $10.7 million dollars to our member-owners last year, which goes back into the local community and has a huge impact

ORTING LOCAL, AND GIVING LOCAL! on growth, security and success. We supported local sports teams, community groups, 4H clubs, the Heart and Stroke Foundation, Calgary Children’s Hospital, Canada Food grains banks, HALO, Southeastern Alberta Search and Rescue, the NICU unit at Medicine Hat Regional Hospital and many more. We also donated over $300,000 in product and cash to our regional food banks. We’re able to do all of this because of the support and generosity we receive from our customers and guests.

South Country Co-op is all about thinking local, supporting local and giving local. We take great pride in the rich history of the communities in which we live work and play. We’re committed to a local-first attitude and this shines through in everything that we do, continuously supporting local teams, clubs, businesses, and community initiatives.

We embrace a can-do culture of innovation and success. We have skilled and motivated team members, a solid business plan for the future, and a supportive and enthusiastic management team. We are committed to operating our business effectively, and serving our members and communities. If it’s meaningful and it’s local, we want to be part of it. A Brand New Year by Basil Dodd

January always seems to start slowly, and no wonder since we all seem to be recovering from a Boxing Day Hang-over. Not to worry winter will still be around for a few more weeks. What will some of the things in 2018 be like? Obviously food prices will be affected by extreme cold winters.

Adding to the list are taxes – not just any tax, but those unlucky people who have “off shore” banking harbours, known to most, of us as “Paradise Clubs”. How will carbon tax benefit our lives – if any? Is there going to be an increase in bank rates for borrowing money? In July 2018, legalized marijuana will be available, to anyone who needs it.

Does this mean to everyone without restrictions, are there any guidelines to follow?

How will sales be regulated in July 2018? Will there be an age limitation? How will smoking indoors and in public places be controlled? Who will benefit from the sales of legal marijuana? What effect will the law enforcement have on legal and non-legalized purchases of these drugs?

The Veiner Centre

The answers to all these questions will have to be resolved before July 1st, 2018. This new year for many Medicine Hat Seniors will bring with it conclusion to a long and drawn out conflict of where will our new Club house be located? After the flood of 2013, several areas of the City were affected. This was not the only time in recent years that the South Saskatchewan River has burst its banks more than once, beginning in 1995 there were four floods altogether including 2013.

It wasn’t long before the prospect of a new site was selected at the corner of primrose Drive and College Avenue.

tabled, and council considered this to be the best choice as the City could afford the price tag of 12 million.

A consultant from Lethbridge was chosen to draft up a building layout, and design complete with cost estimate of just under 20 million. This was presented to council in September 2015, but an approval was not immediately given due to further investigation of the existing Veiner Centre building. The consultants report was to expand and rebuilt at the Woodman Avenue site. This was

This was approved by council in 2016 and a start date was given in Spring 2017. Work progress seems to be slow but we hope the new building will be operational before the end of 2018.
