The last few months of the year are often a time to slow down and remember. I hope it is also a time to appreciate. Here in Medicine Hat we are so very fortunate to have freedoms. As a community we remember those who have served to protect those freedoms. We have the freedom to vote and to voice our opinions. We have the freedom to open our community to newcomers. We are free to remember the people who have lived in this landscape before us. Remembering is important. So is appreciating and

celebrating. Our prairie heritage is something that we can celebrate. Heritage didn't just happen long ago. We are all contributing to it everyday. We build the heritage for tomorrow. That gives us a lot of responsibility! The prairie is a wonderful world of wide open space. The wild landscape has seen many changes since the time of the glaciers. Some were good and others, maybe not so good. Our prairie has many resources that we can use to build a good life. In pre-settlement days, the grasslands provided home for bison, elk, and an amazing diversity of

wildlife. People of the prairies knew the patterns of the seasons and the wildlife, and worked hard to adapt and build their culture around a mostly mobile lifestyle. They knew their way around without any paper maps and traded ideas and supplies across the entire continent. Today, with our more settled lifestyle, we see ranches and farms, replacing the wandering herds. Ranching can be a sustainable, environmentally friendly way to make use of the natural climate and landscape. Working with nature is a good way to thrive in any ecosystem. will provide for the future generations.

our corner of the world healthy and interesting.

As the prairies were fenced and cultivated and new animals brought in, we lost many of the original inhabitants. Most ranches have cattle, producing some of the best beef in the world. A few ranchers are building up herds of bison, recognizing the qualities that make these impressive creatures totally suited to being part of a healthy prairie. If you know anyone who raises bison, ask them about the differences between the domestic cattle and the prairie bison.

Of course our cities are part of modern life on the prairies too. Medicine Hat grew up because of the river, the railroad, natural resources, and people. The early entrepreneurs were generally welcomed by the people already here. The trend continues as we continue to welcome newcomers. Some arrive here by careful planning and choice, and others are fleeing horrible conditions and dangers. As a community with a history of welcome and appreciation of the importance of freedoms, we continue to build a heritage of diversity.

Bringing back the bison can be part of celebrating the diversity which keeps

In this quiet time of the year, I hope that you will all remember our long history, entwined with the wild life and all the people of the prairies. And I hope that you enjoy building your part of the heritage for the future. If you would like to explore the natural and human heritage of our area, please know that you, your stories, and your questions are welcome at the Nature Centre in Police Point Park. Police Point Park Nature Centre is open 9 to 5, from Tuesday to Sunday.
