Overcoming

OBSTACLES IN YOUR BUSINESS By Elizabeth Blair The “Montana Spartan Beast” is a trial of strength, endurance and resolve, and it attracts competitors willing to test their limits and push past them in a quest to find their personal best. Over the course of several hours, competitors conquer a dozen miles and approximately 30 difficult obstacles. Business leaders and entrepreneurs face obstacles too. Just like running in a marathon competition, running a business will leave you facing challenges that require commitment and 4

ingenuity. What can business leaders and entrepreneurs do to overcome the obstacles they face, and what can we learn from the marathon athlete? FALL DOWN, GET BACK UP, AND TRY AGAIN. Not every strategy works the first time so don’t quit. Try again, even if it means you will fall down several times. Understand what you might need to adjust the next time you attempt to conquer that obstacle.

STAYING On July 22, 2017 I joined hundreds of other Wildrose and PC members in Red Deer Alberta, anxiously awaiting the results of our referendum to unite and solidify our conservative movement in Alberta. Flash forward to one year, a leadership race and founding convention later, our United Conservative Party is poised to form government and lead Albertans to a brighter and less burdened future. With the NDP racking up $45B in provincial debt, sending $3B from Alberta taxpayers to bankers and bondholders to service their mismanagement, major educational changes turning our school kids into agents of change and tone deaf one size fits all policy impacting rural Alberta, one thing is for certain – Albertans need a change of government in 2019. I have been inspired watching the conservative movement grow and 8

expand across the nation, united by one vision, to bring common sense back to legislatures everywhere. With the leadership of Saskatchewan, Ontario, New Brunswick and now Prince Edward Island, we are forming a broad coalition across Canada, in the name of common sense, to take on the overreaching policy of the Trudeau Liberals. Various media outlets have noted that, especially with the hope of Alberta joining this battle in 2019, Trudeau’s plan to impose his tax scheme on Alberta families already burdened with the failed social license of the NDP, could be dead in the water. The Premier has called our advocacy “fear mongering”, that the United Conservative Party’s efforts to challenge the federal Carbon Tax is nothing more than gamesmanship – but this is not the first time that she has underestimate the power of www.digitalcopyworks.com

UNITED. conservatives when we stay focused on a common goal. The NDP are sinking to new lows, throwing out every name in the book, looking for something to stick. When I am in Cypress-Medicine Hat, talking with my constituents, it is clear that Rachel Notley’s erratic tactics are not working. Albertans tell me that they want an alternative to this spendthrift government. They want results, fiscal accountability and to leave things better than we found them for the

next generation. They want a sound plan back to balance and hope for our communities that doesn’t include the burden of a Carbon Tax. They want their families to be free from government oversight and they want to see Alberta working, competing and thriving. If we stand together, united, we can ensure this government is one and done. Drew Barnes, MLA Cypress - Medicine Hat

ENERGY - V - WASTE

By Basil Dodd In this article Part V, will attempt to describe the many different types of metals, their history, usefulness, and recycling methods. Before attempting to sort out details of the most reliable materials found on Earth, we have to return to a starting point. Copper had its major breakthrough in 4500 BC. It was iron that first appeared in Western Europe in 1200 BC. This part of the world was still in the stone age, and it wasn’t until 1600-1780 AD that iron was used as a forging material. Enter the age of industrial revolution which began in England and was producing forged iron at the rate of 400,000 tons a year. A major turning point was about to be reached in 1805 onwards, with the Railway Act, which opened the door to the rest of the Western world. It was after 1855 that steel

became widely used in a variety of industries. Ship building, trestle bridges, railway lines and buildings of every kind. As we approach the Twentieth century, metals of all types and grades were available from IRON, STEEL, COPPER, BRASS, BRONZE and TIN. Aluminum-Alloy came later and silver and gold belong to a special family due in-large to investments, and government currency. About 1935, plans for jet engines were on the drawing boards both in England and Germany. This type of aircraft engine was not only totally different, but required specially made turbine blades made of titanium. All turbine engines are basic, and have been used on ships, passenger aircraft, generating power stations, etc. Today, steel and stainless steel have become major

components in our domestic, household and office lifestyles. However, one piece of good news is that all metallic items can be melted down, re-forged, and put back into new again, avoiding landfill. Now that we have arrived at the Twenty-First Century, a lot of time , discipline and education is needed to clean up the mess, we are about to leave our children. Everything from ballpoint pens to cars can be stripped down, dismantled as none of it needs to go into the landfill. Smart people can take advantage of all or any electrical equipment, such as hair dryers, mixers, drills, T.V’s, printers, stereos and any AC or DC operating device and turn it into usefulness. The main opportunity here is copper, and due to its weight, market value, it becomes attractive to anyone with time on their hands. Also anything made of aluminum/alloy, although much lighter than copper is most valuable because it brings in a good price on the open market. Cell phones have now become number one on the list of electronic devices to watch out for. Today the need for instant communication, security and entertainment has led to a massive spike in the use of cell phones. Before the end of 2018,

RE-USE OR LOSE IT there will be more phones on earth than people. The total amount of obsolete electronic devices will start to pile up which means a problem exists due to toxic waste. The manufacturers of these products need to stop feeding the consumer, or to change the way they do business. In next months issue, the Sleeping Giant Part 6, will focus on paper. This will include newspapers, tissues, decorations, cardboard and reducing everything from junk mail to advertising. Recycling as taken a large bite out of waste paper.
