GOD’S LOVE IN ACTION The Champion’s Centre is a non-profit, interdenominational Christian facility supported by people who are dedicated to serving the physical and spiritual needs of hungry, homeless and lonely individuals.

ARTICLES Our Services Serving the spiritual needs of lonely individuals by:

• Demonstrating God’s love in action.

• Praying with them and for them.

• Listening - fulfilling their need to know that someone cares.

• Encouraging them to seek God’s comfort and guidance in the Bible.

• Providing Christian literature.

Serving the physical needs of homeless and other individuals in poverty by: Providing Supportive Living

Room and board are provided for six men who might otherwise be homeless.

Providing Clothing (all clothing is donated)

• Coats, jeans, shirts, socks, shoes, sweaters, toques, gloves, scarves, underwear, etc. for men and women.

• Men’s special occasions clothing: suits, dress shirts, ties, socks and shoes for men who cannot afford dress clothes, but need them for weddings, funerals or other special occasions.

Providing the Winter Response Program (November 1 - March 31)

The WRP is funded by the Alberta Government through the Medicine Hat Community Housing Society. Daily shelter and food are provided at The Champion’s Centre from 7:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. On Saturdays, the hours are extended until 2:00 p.m. with a hot meal served from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Distributing Food

Food is donated by individuals and commercial establishments. Some of the food is used for meals provided at The Champion’s Centre; the rest is distributed by volunteers to low-income people.

Some food is given directly to needy people who come to the Champion’s Centre for food.

Providing Bathing Facilities

Homeless individuals with no other place to bathe may have a shower on weekdays between 8:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m.

Donations for clothing such as toques, gloves, socks accepted at Copy Works Design and Gifts for the Champion Centre.

Providing Hot Meals to Hungry People

• Weekday breakfasts, 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.

• Saturday dinner, 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m., is served by volunteers.

• Sunday supper, 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., November to the end of March, is served by volunteers from the Medicine Hat Police Services, with food donated by the Medicine Hat Lodge.

The Canadian Foodgrains Bank is made up of 15 different church and church-based agencies working together to end global hunger. In 20132014 we provided $42 million of assistance for 1.3 million people in 42 countries. The Canadian Government (CIDA) match donations up to 4:1. They support projects that do three main things: • Help people meet their immediate food needs.

• Improve agriculture and livelihoods.

• Improve nutrition, especially for nursing mothers and young children.

They also work to influence improvements in national and international policies that will contribute to ending global hunger; and increase and deepen the engagement of Canadians in ending global hunger.

The Medicine Hat and District Growing Project started in the spring of 2000.

Prior to this date, I had been to Ethiopia on a Food Study Tour with the Canadian Foodgrains Bank. I was really impressed with the way they handled their business in the Third World countries as well as back here in Canada. Operation overhead was kept to a minimum, and those with little food were their main concern.

As a result of the conditions I observed in Ethiopia I decided I would look for land in the Medicine Hat area that could be used for the Canadian Foodgrains Bank.

In 2000 I learned that First Assembly of God Church was looking to purchase a parcel of land south of the City. After the deal was made I approached the church about using the land for the Canadian Foodgrains Bank. I was given the “okay� however I had to co-ordinate the operation.

Our farming operation is done on 1/4 section of land, we seed about 70 acres every year and have always grown wheat. When it is harvested the grain is delivered between the three elevators we have in the area. In 2014 we harvested 53 bushels per acre and collected just over $19,000.00.

The work is done with volunteers and donations; this includes seeding, donation of fertilizer & chemicals, combines, truckers and of course, lunch, coffee and donuts for everyone on harvest day. And to make it

even better it is all served in the field.

In addition to the seeding and harvesting of the land, we also have a fund raising banquet in March.

The Medicine Hat & District Growing Project has been credited with over $400,000.00 which is matched up to 4:1 by the Government.

I

n the early 1970’s, the south east area of Medicine Hat was expanding rapidly. The Lutheran Board of Missions saw a need for a church to serve the people of the area. On March 29, 1974 the ELCIC decided to establish a mission church in the area, with the assistance of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church.

The congregation was officially organized on April 6, 1975 with 32 families as charter members Rev. Walter Lexvold was called to be the first minister. For two years, while the building plans were being made, the Seventh Day Adventist church kindly permitted the new congregation to use their building for Sunday services.

The total cost for land, construction, furnishings, parking lot paving and landscaping totaled $295,000. The cost would have actually been nearly double, but for the help of many dedicated Christians from many different churches and denominations. These included many of the subcontractors, who provided their work as reasonably as possible because it was in the construction of a new church. As well, thousands of hours of volunteer work was done by people from all churches, often in the evenings after putting in a full day at work. So Victory Lutheran Church could really said to have a deep ecumenical foundation.

Victory Lutheran Church quickly became known throughout the city as “the fish church” due to the prominent fish image on the north end.

The building committee studied many possible designs, but with a limited budget, a plan by Lloyd Christenson of Arcon Design was selected.

The ground breaking ceremony was held on June 4, 1978, and the church building hosted its first event, a Christmas

Membership grew rapidly, as people from St. Peter’s, retirees from the Burstall-Hilda-Schuler areas began moving into Medicine Hat. The building eventually went through two expansion projects, as well as attaching

a double-wide trailer unit to be used for Sunday School. This attachment also served as home for many years of a church-run play school, Noah’s Ark Play School.

At one point the church was holding three services Sunday mornings as well as an evening service. Weekly attendances were in the 550-600 range.

We are celebrating our fortieth anniversary with a banquet and program at Higdon Hall on May 30 and a special day of services on May 31.

We felt that the fortieth anniversary would be very special, because of the great significance of the number “40” in scriptures.

The children of Israel wandered forty years in the wilderness; at Noah’s flood it rained forty days and nights; Christ was tempted in the wilderness for forty days; David and Solomon both reigned for

forty years; Moses was on Mount Sinai forty days and nights.

We feel very blessed to have reached this mile-stone in our time in Southview.

We have always tried to be serving, not only in the church, but also in the community around us. We have been part of a school breakfast program at Southview School, participated in Take A Break programs and we have opened out doors for a whole range of outside organizations to use our facilities for their meetings.

One of our popular activities for the area children is our summer Vacation Bible School. We are currently planning our program for this summer. It will run July 6-10. Appropriately for “the fish church” the theme this summer is “Go Fish’s Backstage with the Bible VBS.”

I

t’s July 2014 and I’m mowing my beautiful lush lawn in Medicine Hat, Alberta.

I’m here but my mind is riveted back to the many times I’ve set foot in the destitute regions of Turkana, Kenya.

The intense heat, the dry river beds, the cries of a small child and the sight of her sister scooping contaminated mud water into a cup continue to haunt and captivate me. Tears come spilling down my cheeks grown man sobbing just doesn’t seem right yet they fall uncontrollably.

Turkana is so far from my doorsteps in Medicine Hat. The thought of flying to a foreign land once intrigued me but today travelling abroad has lost its appeal. Three flights and 36 hours in transit is wearing,

yet the plea in the beautiful eyes of the women and children draws me back time and time again.

The first time I travelled to Kenya I went with a few friends (Garry Lemire, Steven Lemire, Les Saunders’s and his son Chris).

We were armed and ready with building supplies in hand- anticipating building a community centre. Only a short time after we arrived did we realize an essential ingredient was missing. We had all the mortar needed but sat by helplessly with little to no water in sight to mix with it.

A few village women saw our dilemma and offered to provide water for a small price.

They hauled it day and night! We were very grateful for their efforts but couldn’t understand why our hands stung and burned while we mixed the water and mortar. One night we decided to follow the women to see the source of their cargo. We ended up at a Catholic boys school about two kilometers away where the septic field there had ruptured and the women were collecting raw sewage and bringing it back not only for our use but for their own children to drink as well.

Water was needed! We watched women and children balancing containers on their heads and walking 40 kilometers or more a day. It didn’t take long for us to realize that water was a far greater basic necessity than a community center. Most women were walking long distances only to bring back contaminated water to their families.

We were repulsed. We wouldn’t bathe in the water they were hauling, yet they were giving this water to their children and wondering why they were dying. In Turkana, 85% of the hospitalizations are due to water borne diseases.

Where was the clean water and why wasn’t it available in this area? The answers came quickly. There was water in the ground but the area was too remote and too volatile for companies to come and dig water wells.

Turkana is a desolate region, littered with snakes and scorpions - the climate is dry and the soil lifeless. The people live sim-

ply yet their difficulties are complex for our North American minds. Small tasks stall big projects for weeks on end. Not even money could convince companies to dig for water there.

Was this first trip a failure or the birthing of something bigger and better for this forgotten land and a small crew from Medicine Hat, Alberta?

On our 2nd trip to this isolated land we were able to refurbish an old abandoned well that had sat for years. We did not realize the impact we would have by simply refurbishing this water well. We had not even completed it and there was already a line of 30 to 40 women waiting patiently for clean water.

For us in North America we like to see things happen immediately but in third World countries things take considerably longer. It was my third or fourth trip to Northern Kenya when I decided to invite my friend and local businessman (Stuart Rempel) from Medicine Hat to see the problem first hand. Stuart had been on many missions trips before but I believe this trip impacted his life more than any other, I invited him to help us make a difference. With a great passion he returned home and raised $75,000 to enable NCM to purchase their drilling rig.

gan and a dilapidated rig was found in Nairobi, Kenya for a mere $75,000. Initially we thought this equipment was junk but with a few creative mechanical minds and a lot of hard work, it became a life-giving piece of equipment!

In 2004 I started Nehemiah Construction Ministries as a registered charity with the intent to construct buildings but these eager intentions soon morphed into something more…. drilling water wells! Since then, Nehemiah has provided 38 water wells to communities in need. Kenyans are now moving into areas where wells are located. Day to day life is improving; water borne diseases are decreasing and gardens are being irrigated. Water is nourishing the body, soul and the land!

Water is changing lives! Hope deferred makes the heart sick but hope restored produces life. Slowly parents are beginning to understand they don’t have to anticipate death for their child - they can see health and education as a possibility.

Nehemiah Ministries works through the tedious affair of negotiating with government personnel to get geological permits to dig wells. We also check on existing wells, provide maintenance work, and at other times we scout out new locations for future wells.

Our favourite occasions are listening to the stories the village folk’s share. My new friend “Florence” told me how she had used her own education fund to enable 4 girls to continue their high school education. I’m humbled by her willingness to lay down her desires for her friends and can’t help but wonder how I can gather some funds so she can complete her university degree.

The water wells have been a great start to revitalize this area. Nehemiah Ministries, Medicine Hat and most of Alberta have been instrumental in paying it forward.

Florence is paying it forward. Other villagers have offered to become trained, educated and return to their villages. A small pharmacy has opened in a remote village to employ one of our graduates and hope continues to trickle in to this arid land.

I wouldn’t have noticed the astounding changes water could bring had it not been for Margaret a local Kenyan woman. The first time I met Margaret she appeared quite elderly. On a later visit I discovered she was only in her mid-thirties. Her anti-aging solution wasn’t Oil of Olay or any of the latest lotions; water transformed the very texture of her skin! Her eyes were

The struggles of Turkana often haunt me as I lay my head on my soft pillow at night and then prompt me in the daylight hours, to do something to help these people with their nagging challenges. Is there help in sight? The answer is a resounding YES!

elcome to The Dream Centre Church: Medicine Hat, Alberta. Great churches have great stories and the stories that fill our church are about stories of being restored, finding hope and purpose, and seeing lives changed. There are stories of physical healings from sickness and pain; of how God has eased mental torment, or healed emotional pain. Each person sitting in a seat at the Dream Centre Church on a Sunday morning has a story of what God has done for them. But our stories haven’t ended - we are all works in progress - and our greatest desire is to have God work in us and through us so that we can not only receive greater levels of joy and freedom but help other people experience that as well.

This desire compels us to throw wide our doors during the week and offer our building as a haven and help for the city at large. On any given day during the week you will find people using our free facilities such as computers, internet, showers and

ARTICLES hai Orchid Room is celebrating its 9th year in Medicine Hat! For some that may not know our history, we were originally in Bow Island for 8 years before moving to the Hat. Sounantha (Sou) Boss started the business at 20 years old, with a dream to become a business owner and along with some savings. With help from AFSC (formerly AOC - Alberta Opportunity Company), they believed in her and were willing to help her achieve her goals. Thai cuisine was first introduced to southern Albertans in Bow Island... (imagine: Farmers and locals who love their meat and potatoes, and the closest ethnic restaurant was Chinese!)

Thai cuisine grew so famously that Hatters would drive out to Bow Island to get their "Thai fix" as well. Many loyal patrons from Medicine Hat suggested we open up a "great, authentic, ethnic restaurant" in the Hat... and I guess you can say the rest is history!

Thai Orchid Room employs 14 full & parttime employees, and their chefs all hail from their native Thailand. We take utmost pride in delivering fine, authentic Thai fare, using only top quality ingredients. Everything is fresh and made to order, and we can also customize according to dietary restrictions, whether it is gluten, nut, seafood allergies, etc.

It is truly a great honor to be able to bring the Thai culture to Medicine Hat and southern Alberta. love to go back through journals and see things I prayed for in the past and reflect upon how God has responded. I write these prayers down and then I have this habit of weekly looking back and putting a symbol regarding the status. If things are going well, I might put a plus sign or a smiley face. No change earns an = sign. And you know when things are actually moving in the wrong direction, poor God usually gets another journal entry on the topic.

I think prayer is just as important in our business as any other part of our life. As a matter of fact, in my ebook and work book, The Christian Business Edge, I recommend that small business owners develop a Top 10 Business Prayer Request list.

This is a list of prayer requests that you, your team, and even outside supporters can be praying for.

What To Include In Your Prayer List It is human nature to pray for an immediate need or problem. I am suggesting here that you develop a list of prayers that will lead you in the direction of God’s vision for your business. It can include things like: • breaking into a new niche or industry with your business.

• building a culture in your organization that reflects your values.

• praying for certain milestones or business goals to be achieved for the year.

• finding talent that is required for your business to do excellent work.

• praying that you can be a Godly leader for your team and customers.

• peace in times of stress or economic adversity.

• growth • work that will make a difference in God’s Kingdom.

• that the Lord will be with you in your business and that the Holy Spirit will guide you.

• and yes, we can also pray for resolution to problems!

Thanking God In Advance I learned a valuable lesson from a 6 year old once who prayed thanks to God in advance for selling their home. It was the innocence and trust of a child that helped me realize that God answers our prayers and we can thank Him in advance because there is nothing too big for our God. A sincere thanks, though, means we are okay with the outcome whether it matches our exact request or not. I constantly remind myself that I need to pray for His Will and also remind myself that His will is the best thing even if it isn’t what I want.

Timing Is Always Perfect If We Have a God Perspective

I started praying for my business to grow when I first started it. However, it wasn’t for about four years, when my kids were out and about with their own activities that God started sending an abundance of people. Before then He knew I would probably get out of balance again. I started my own business so I could spend more time with my kids.

When they started driving, my business just started growing. It wasn’t really anything I was doing substantially different; it was just the right timing.

Include Other Prayer Warriors

If you are an adult with your own business then you already know that our timing and God’s timing do not always line up. But our job is to be faithful with our prayers. We need to keep our list in front of us and pray consistently. If God is silent, then we have to trust His timing includes what is best for us.

Asking others to pray with you and for your business is a very reasonable request that most fellow Christians are very open to. I know we don’t like to burden others, but asking others to pray is not a burden. It is something they can do that will have a significant impact on you and your business and it honors God at the same time.
