PREGNANCY CENTRE

Nurture Pregnancy Centre is a non-profit, charitable, Christian-based organization that provides support to women and their families throughout the stages of pregnancy and the first two years of their child’s life. The values of the Centre have been consistent throughout the thirty year operation that include fundamental value of people. We serve people of all cultures and religious backgrounds by providing a welcoming environment to access resources and mentorship. No matter what struggles an individual or family encounters, they are treated in a respectful manner with encouragement, acceptance, and non-judgement. The practical guidance, educational, and emotional support from the client care team, helps move parents to give their babies the best start in life and attain a healthy lifestyle of their own. By extending empathy to families, gives them hope and empowerment to gain strength, feel content and confident to grow as parents through the joys and trials of their experience. The programs and resources offered at no charge throughout the year include: Peer counseling, educational classes, resource library of information, pregnancy tests, maternity and children’s clothing, toys and furniture, formula, diapers and layettes for infants to help all families through difficult seasons. The Pregnancy Centre takes social action by advocating in the community through

presentations that provide agency information to various organizations. The connections with other non-profit and health care establishments are valued to serve clients more effectively and for collaborative networking with fundraisers and other events. Our fundraisers held throughout the year are the Fall Brunch, Spring to Life Dinner and Silent Auction, and the Baby Bottle Drive. The history of the community represents a commitment of partnerships to support the work of the agency that is proven reliable and trusted, and the growth in facility, resources and programs that are provided to clients is available because of the long-standing support. Together we can make a difference and create change in a fundamental way in Medicine Hat. The Kristy Care Fund developed at the Centre is influential to support families with children who have severe disabilities by providing them with specialty strollers, lifts, etc. Through these interactions with family members, the hope is to lift spirits and extend encouragement in the daily care they give their loved ones. There are many costs associated as a non-profit organization to make certain

that the people are cared for and supported. The generosity from community members and volunteerism is what the Centre relies on to keep functioning successfully. This is accomplished through giving of one’s time, financial donations, spreading the word of programs and services, and by staying current with the events on social media for ways to become involved. Volunteers have the opportunity to touch families’ lives in a positive way. If you’re interested in serving, this role has a lot of flexibility to work with your schedule. Applications are available at the Centre. The hours of operation are Monday to Friday 10am – 4pm. We are located downtown conveniently next to the bus terminal. More information about our Centre can be found on our website: www.nurturepregnancycentre.ca , call 403-504-8560 and follow us on Facebook.

The Medicine Hat & District Growing Project is part of the Canadian Foodgrains Bank (CFGB). The CFGB was named one of Canada’s top impact charities in 2018. CFGB is pleased to announce it has been included on the Charity intelligence 2018 list of the top 10 charities in Canada for social return on investment. Donors should ask of a charity “how much good is my donation doing?” On average, charities in Canada provide $2 in social benefit for every dollar received. The Charity Intelligence report notes that high impact charities like CFGB provide on average $6 in social benefit. In 2017-18, 245 growing and community projects and auctions from PEI to B.C. raised $7.3 million. Altogether, a total of 13.7 million was donated to the CFGB. With matching from Canadian Government, we were able to provide $37.6 million of assistance for 843,967 people in 34 countries through 117 projects. We are located on the east side of Desert Bloom (1/2 mile east) on the north side of South Boundary Road. I guess we had normal farmer type stress. We did not receive very much rain and the gophers enjoyed the crop that was growing. 8 CHRISTIAN DIRECTORY 2019

We had seeded Brandon wheat again and it was looking as good as could be expected. Our next door neighbours blessed us with seeding and the spraying. Fertilizer was supplied by Richardson Pioneer, Nutrien and a private donor. Chemicals were supplied through South Country Coop, as well as information on what we needed. Alberta Financial Services supplied hail insurance. Harvest day was set for August 15, the growing season had been very dry and even the gophers left the area. We had seeded about 100 acres and had three combines from the following dealers, Rocky Mountain Equipment (Case) and Robertson Implements (New Holland). The New Holland combine did not show up, so I checked and was told someone

bought it, the afternoon before the harvest. So we used two……. Perry Wold and Allen Dickson each supplied a super B grain hauling trailer. The grain was delivered to P&H Elevator, Paterson Elevator and Pioneer Grain Elevator. During the harvest we served lunch in the field to over 125 people. Coffee and donuts were donated by Tim Horton’s, sausage was donated by Premium Sausage from Seven Persons. Shaw TV attended and made a video of the harvest, this can be seen on “Facebook” at Canadian Foodgrains Bank Shaw TV Medicine Hat August 24, 2018. We give God the “thanks” for blessing the project. Our income was down, we had a total of $23,209.39 which was sent to the CFGB. It is then matched by the Government. Our crop averaged approximately 3250 bushels. We thank God for all the donations and interest people have in the project and look forward to another “blessed” year.

P

rairie Gleaners Society began operation in June, 2009 as a registered Christian Charity. This year is our tenth anniversary of that beginning. We are dedicated to the work of recovering vegetables that have been deemed "unmarketable" or surplus and are destined to become waste. The term “gleaning” finds its Biblical meaning/roots in those who came behind gathering leftover grain or produce following the harvest. We are a Christian organization that continues to be blessed in receiving product out of the compassion of local growers, greenhouses and produce distribution operators who provide us with various vegetables that are processed into a nutritious, dehydrated soup mix, which is then sent to resource some of the most vulnerable and poor communities around the world. In Canada we enjoy an abundance of resources making available a bountiful food supply, affording us the privilege of 14 CHRISTIAN DIRECTORY 2019

picking the best of the crop. This leaves us with vegetables that are not “perfect” based on factors such as shape, size, or blemishes, but equally as nutritious. The Prairie Gleaners Society has always recognized this privilege as an opportunity to gather from our ‘over abundance’ and utilize the unique agricultural diversity of our area as we seek to help redistribute food where the 'need' of others can be alleviated. Another necessary resource that the Prairie Gleaners depends upon comes through the generous donors and dedicated volunteers from all walks of life who join us in preparing vegetables at the various stages of our processing, from cutting to bagging. The soup mixes can have upward of 15 different varieties of vegetables, the main being tomatoes, peppers, potatoes, carrots, cabbage, and dried beans or lentils for protein. In 2018 we received 242,000 kg of vegeta-

bles that were processed over 242 workdays, an average of 1000 kg (2,200 lbs) per day, yielding over 15,000 meals at a cost of less than $0.06 per meal. We partner with reputable relief and aid organizations who ship and distribute the packages of vegetable mix to people in need throughout the world. In 2018 our dehydrated soup was shipped overseas to Burundi (Africa), El Salvador, Greece (refugees), Haiti, Malawi, Mexico, Uganda and Ukraine as well as within Canada to the High Arctic in support of relief efforts and feeding programs in the North.

riegleaners.com . If you are interested in taking part in volunteer experience that combines the good company of others all working together in a friendly environment towards an amazing cause then come and join. We are always happy to have new volunteers drop in to help, or if you are interested in scheduling a group that you would like to have join our efforts please give us a call at (403) 5809432 to schedule a morning.

The Prairie Gleaners sees approximately 1500 different volunteers each year, from retired individuals and families to youth/service groups. In 2018 we averaged 21 volunteers per day with 17,800 volunteer hours for the year. We provide a great opportunity for volunteers to meet new people while accomplishing some meaningful work where anyone can find a part to play. Our organization operates off of the generosity of donors in both time and financial support helping us to maintain our operational costs and projects. Our regular hours of operation are from Tuesday to Saturday, 8:30 am to 12 pm. The Prairie Gleaners plant is located approximately 4 km south of highway 3 on Range Road 63. WHAT IS COACHING?

My coaching involves the ability to understand you: to think how you think, and understand your perspective. From this benchmark, I will place another perspective on top of yours – stretching and growing you to gently see a more empowering way. As a certified John Maxwell coach, I can see what you are going through now and what is up ahead. Coaching is foreseeing, paving the way, coming alongside you while helping you achieve goals and overcome limiting paradigms. Coaching is often misunderstood in today’s culture. The most common idea of a coach that we are introduced to is your typical sports coach or health coach. Not to say that these professionals aren’t coaching, but the majority are actually acting in the role of a consultant or mentor rather than coach. SO WHAT IS COACHING? 1. Imagine a relationship that is entirely focused on you and only you. 2. Imagine someone who is listening intently to everything you say rather than just hearing you. 3. Imagine someone who holds you accountable to your dreams, aspirations and personal goals. 4. Imagine being in a professional relationship with someone who is insatiably curious 22 CHRISTIAN DIRECTORY 2019

about who you are and who you intend to be. 5. Imagine having a relationship in your life with someone who is often more committed to what you want to achieve in life than even you are. 6. Imagine being in a relationship with someone who has no agenda other than your personal growth and success. 7. Imagine someone in your life who sees the enormity of your true essence. 8. Imagine a relationship where you are finally able to break free of the prison of the self-limiting that has sabotaged your growth and success in the past. Whether you are a coach, trainer, teacher, consultant, mentor, your ultimate goal would be helping people better themselves. The differences between all these amazing skills is in the delivery. If you are sharing information that you have obtained then you are actually teaching and/or training. If you sharing from your experiences then you are mentoring. If you are dealing drawing out deep rooted issues and helping people come out of addictions or fix issues in their lives then you are counseling.

rienced tacticians. They impart their experiences and knowledge upon players. There are a few problems with this approach. First, it assumes that how the coach used to do things is the best possible way of doing it. Secondly, it approaches players as if they are incapable of independent thought and devoid of knowing what’s best in any given moment. I’m not saying that teaching players and mentoring players on how to do something isn’t useful. I am saying that it is only part of what players need when it comes to improving their abilities and game. Being able to process through what went wrong, what went right and how to improve based on how YOU as an individual operates is far more important than how someone else would do it. We as humans are created uniquely and with different gifting’s. If you take some of the best players in any given sport and analyze them, you’ll find that they are the best for different reasons. Some shooting, some speed, some accuracy. Each of them, to improve, need to be able to grow in their strengths that apply to them. Coaching is how this is done with good, observant and inquisitive questions. Jeremiah Benoit 403-458-4318 jeremiahbenoit@gmail.com envisionlifetoday.com

5th Avenue Memorial United Church The first Methodist Church was built on the corner of Third Street and Sixth Avenue where the present Royal Bank is situated. The first church, erected in 1883, was a small wood frame building. It was later replaced by a large brick church named Century Methodist in 1900. In 1912, this church was sold to the Royal Bank and construction commenced on the present day Fifth Avenue Memorial United Church at a cost of$100,000.00. It was originally named

Fifth Avenue Methodist Church which is clearly evident on the cornerstone of the building. Across the street from the church, the red brick church manse was erected. It still stands today and is owned by an individual. In 1925, Fifth Avenue Methodist Church became Fifth Avenue United Church through the union of the Methodist, Presbyterian and Congregational Churches. In June 1931, the congregation celebrated the

26 CHRISTIAN DIRECTORY 2019

burning of the mortgage and one month later the church was gutted by fire. All that remained were the walls, the iron framework which suspended the roof, the beautiful Gothic stained glass windows, which were made in Quebec, as well as the pews. The congregation commenced rebuilding immediately opening five months later, but with some definite modifications. The roof line was changed to a simple, relatively low-sloped gable roof and the north and

south balconies inside the church were not rebuilt. In 1957, the attached Christian Education Building was built and dedicated in 1958. This addition provided a large gymnasium/auditorium, classrooms and offices at a cost of $140,000.00 precluding land costs. Fifth Avenue has served the community well – graduations, Red Cross meetings, Hospital Aid meetings, music concerts, Boy Scouts meetings, and numerous church functions to mention only a few.

As so many historical buildings, Fifth Avenue was constructed of local sandstone and red brick. Its bell tower faces Fourth Street and Fifth Avenue – hence the name. The churches’ front doors of the sanctuary and the Christian Education Building face Fourth Street. At the front of the church is a large historic pipe organ and, as it did in the past, it remains the main architectural focal point of the church. The church’s design was indeed ahead of other western churches as the sanctuary has a sloped

flloor f and curved pews which enables all the parishioners to have an excellent view of the alter and pulpit. Of the three balconies, only the rear balcony remains. The doors to the missing balconies remain, but when opened they reveal a solid wall. The basement with its relatively high ceiling houses many meeting rooms. It is one of the few churches in the city that has street level basement access. In 1998, Fifth Avenue United Church amalgamated with Memorial Salem United giving it is present name, Fifth Avenue Memorial United Church. Fifth Avenue Memorial has contributed much to the history and social fiber of Medicine Hat life and it is hoped that this contribution will continue for many generations to come.

We worship on Sunday mornings at 10:00 a.m. Please be our guest this Sunday. We will make you welcome and respect your individuality and your dignity regardless of your race or class, age or sexuality, background or income. Sunday School, youth groups and music.

OUR MISSION: To get cleaner I had taken for granted that if a product safer products into the hands of label advertised “gentle”, “safe”, “natural”, that indeed it must be! Boy was everyone. Until recently, I had no idea about the potentially harmful ingredients that were in the products I was using on myself and my family every day. I had been invited to the home of a dear friend for a Better Beauty Social and had no idea what or who Beautycounter was all about. The couple hours I spent that evening enjoying the company of friends, sampling product, and getting educated about the beauty industry has changed my life and my outlook for the better!

OUR CLEAN PROMISE: Over 1500 questionable ingredients are never used in our formulas – we call this THE NEVER LIST – and our ingredient selection process is unparalleled! 36 CHRISTIAN DIRECTORY 2019

I wrong! Now armed with my NEVER LIST, I began reading and comparing all ingredients in my cupboards and on product labels before placing them in my shopping cart. I was shocked and amazed at how many items I had that contained potentially harmful ingredients that have been linked to hormone disruption, cancer and infertility, to name a few. This knowledge has inspired me to make better choices, for the safety of myself and my family and to inform as many people as I possibly can about this issue and the importance of making it a priority to make beauty and skincare products safe for all.

OUR MOTTO: Formulate, advocate, and educate. I became a Beautycounter consultant because I fell in love with their product

and their mission. Beautycounter creates products that truly perform while achieving an unparalleled standard of safety, because they fully believe beauty should be good for you. I am proud to be part of a leading movement towards a future where all beauty is clean beauty.

OUR OPPORTUNITY: To build a financially rewarding business while making a significant social impact for future generations.
