Social bike enterprise geared up for new home

Council is proud to be opening the new Emerald Hill Library and Heritage Centre with an official launch on Friday 18 October. This will be followed by a week of celebrations culminating with the Emerald Hill Festival on Sunday 27 October. Here the arts precinct, including Australian National Academy of Music, Australian Tapestry Workshop, Multicultural Arts Victoria, Access Arts and more come together for a fun family day with lots of activities and entertainment. See the events calendar on the Council’s website for more details.

I recently completed a tour of the Albert Park ward with the CEO, Tracey Slatter. Tracey has now toured all wards with the relevant ward Councillor in her first three months on the job.

The wheels are still spinning for Back2Bikes, which has relocated to 525 Williamstown Road in Port Melbourne after the recent closure of the South Melbourne Commons.

The group is calling for new volunteers to assist with the repair, maintenance and sale of refurbished bikes.

‘Seeing and working with so many makes and models of bikes, sharing the day with the other volunteers and visitors, and being able to keep all those wheels rolling is very rewarding,’ says current volunteer Robin. Other opportunities

Council strategy paves way for safer roads Council has adopted a new Road Safety Strategy aimed at reducing the number of deaths and injuries to road users in Port Phillip.

Over the next seven years the Safer Streets 2013–2020 strategy aims to eliminate deaths of vulnerable road users in Port Phillip and reduce 2007–2011’s average of the number of killed and seriously injured road users by 20 per cent.

The Council has an action plan that supports the strategy and sets out a series of actions to occur between 2013 and 2015. Examples of actions are taking steps to improve safety for older road users, including treating intersections to reduce collision risk, and ensuring that the condition and slope of pram crossings are safe for motorised scooters.

The plan also includes steps to improve safety for young road users and powered two-wheeler users and it addresses the impacts of drug and alcohol use by pedestrians, bike riders and drivers.

Progress made in five years – 2007–2011 • Serious injuries reduced by 45 per cent.

• Serious injuries incurred by falling pedestrians reduced by 57 per cent.

• Serious injuries incurred by falling motorbike riders reduced by 63 per cent.

• Serious car injuries reduced by 51 per cent.

Open for history and heritage

taking the lead

The Emerald Hill Library and Heritage Centre will be a mecca for anyone interested in local heritage or family history.

Set to officially open in October, the new centre has purpose-built facilities for cultural heritage and local history research and improved library facilities.

The new centre will provide research areas for public use that will include PCs, access to microfiche and microfilm, and group work space for heritage and historyrelated activities.

People researching the heritage of their home will be able to use a range of drop-in and appointment-based services, including: • photo reproduction service • guided walks and information for selfguided walks • assistance with research • appointment-based consultation with our cultural heritage officer and local history librarian • a central point of access for local history collection items • the possibility to become part of our volunteer program, including transcription and research projects.

The new centre provides more space for local library services, including: • a new children’s area • more books, DVDs and CDs • more space for casual seating with Wi-Fi access, including a new courtyard • more space for programs and workshops and group-based learning.

The Older Person’s Consultative Committee includes Henry Bell, Lesley Greagg, Liz Robson, Coralie Ling, Betty Knight and Neil Imlach (chairperson).

This month’s Seniors Festival is just one of the many achievements of the Council’s Older Persons Consultative Committee (OPCC).

The committee is passionate about the role of older people in their community and vigorously advocates on their behalf. The committee is made up of residents, many of who are involved in local organisations such as U3A, Linking Neighbours, Jewish Christian Muslim Association, Lions Club and Rotary Club.

The OPCC has advocated for Council’s Seniors Festival, Linking Neighbours program and the establishment of U3A Port Phillip.

Chairperson Neil Imlach invited seniors to make the most of Seniors Festival and the many other opportunities to be involved in their community.

U3A’s Birthday The University of the Third Age (U3A) Port Phillip is celebrating ten years in our city.

Local children’s service earns top rating North St Kilda Children’s Centre in Argyle Street is abuzz after receiving an overall rating of ‘Exceeding’ in the National Quality Standard (NQS) assessment for early childhood education and care. This is the highest possible rating in the overall assessment of areas such as children’s health and safety, educational program and practice and relationships with children.

Divercity learnt – from the parents themselves – some of what makes the centre so great. ‘The philosophy and culture is nurturing, calm, structured and fun,’ said one parent at the centre.

Another parent said, ‘It is all about the great grassroots feel. Kids can play and be themselves, and there is also a good range of [organised] activities.’

Meanwhile in Port Melbourne…

If you are passing by Liardet Street, you’ll see that the new family and children’s centre is nearing completion. When it opens there will be a community managed kindergarten and long day childcare with 135 places, maternal and child health service, parent groups and play groups. Amongst the finishing touches will be a new name for the centre. Council is searching for an inspiring name that reflects the purpose of the centre and the indigenous heritage of the area in keeping with the Reconciliation Action Plan.

Are you Weather Ready?

Grab your umbrella, gumboots and sunscreen. Council is calling for people to be Weather Ready mentors.

Training will be held on two days – 19 and 26 October 2013.

Weather Ready mentors are people who talk to their neighbours and want to help their street or apartment block prepare for more extreme weather.

Over a beer or a cuppa, neighbours will share ideas to support themselves and each other when floods, storms or heatwaves occur.

Weather Ready is a great opportunity to: • learn about the impact of climate change and the extreme weather it generates in your area • increase your confidence and facilitation skills • meet your neighbours • have fun.

Mentors will receive free training as well as materials to support them and their neighbours.

The Secret Life of Seniors A decade at Dig In Former school principal Ann Rochford knew a thing or two about organising when she started the committee for the Dig In community gardens 11 years ago. ‘Everyone loves the sound of a community garden. But when it comes down to it, there’s a lot of work involved. It’s not for everyone but that’s OK,’ she says. Over the last decade she’s seen the garden expand and has made many new connections.

‘We get a lot of retirees who have moved here from a big place in the suburbs to a smaller apartment. The gardens offer the chance to grow some veggies and also to meet up with other locals.’

Two sharp eyes Local author and activist Shirley Shackleton was recently awarded East Timor’s highest honour, the Taur Matan Ruak medal.

The medal was presented by Timor-Leste President José Maria Vasconcelos in Canberra in July.

Shirley told Divercity that Taur Matan Ruak was the president’s resistance code name; it translates as ‘Two Sharp Eyes’.

‘That meant a lot to me because a friend’s daughter used to call me Little Shirley Sharp Eyes. So I was thrilled to accept the medal in solidarity with the women of Timor–Leste,’ she said.

Shirley’s book, Circle of Silence, won a Walkley Book Award in 2010. Shirley’s husband Greg was one of the Balibo Five, five Australian journalists who were killed in 1975 reporting the Indonesian invasion.

Bert Glenister is a wellknown and loved figure at the South Melbourne Market.

He began work at the market as a security guard, patrolling the market after hours with his dogs Max and Rusty, bailing up intruders before calling the local police.

In 2003, after 19 years in the job, Bert gave up his guard duties to set up a stall selling pre-loved books and records, fondly known as Bert’s Books. Characteristic of his generous nature, half the money he earned from this stall went to the Salvation Army. Now Bert has retired from his stall.

Whether he was selling bags or catching intruders, delivering mail or selling books, Bert has been a part of the fabric of the market for nearly 30 years. He continues to be warmly welcomed by stallholders and locals alike when he drops by to say hello and join his friends for a cup of tea.

The Secret Life of Seniors Miss Marple of movement We’re familiar with detectives investigating crimes and dastardly deeds. Shirley McKechnie investigates something just as dramatic and intriguing but very, very different – she investigates dance and choreography.

‘We can see a great painting, we can touch an ancient sculpture, we can read a Shakespeare script, but how do we research dance or choreography? How can we recreate the feeling of the movement and the language of the dance?’

Rabbi Fred Morgan will continue his involvement with the Port Phillip Multifaith Network and hold further open house programs at the synagogue.

It’s a lifetime of research into these questions that helped earn Shirley an Officer of the Order of Australia in the last Queen’s Birthday Honours.

An Elwood resident, Shirley is still a Professorial Fellow and mentor to choreographers. ‘Just today, I spent a couple of hours talking about dance with a choreographer.’

Rabbi Fred Morgan may have stepped down from his role as Chief Rabbi at Temple Beth Israel but he still has community projects in mind.

She remains fascinated and passionate about how the language of dance communicates.

‘I intend to remain very much involved with community and interfaith work,’ he told Divercity.

Everyone can recycle

He’s currently developing a project called Grass Roots Dialogue, which promotes interfaith engagement between local churches and synagogues.

Living in a rooming hotel isn’t a reason not to recycle, says Wendy Butler, a long term resident at The Gatwick on Fitzroy Street.

‘It’s about bringing together ordinary Christians and Jews to encourage a dialogue and reflection about their own faith as seen through the eyes of the Other.’

‘I’m into recycling and made it my business to organise recycling at The Gatwick. I am proud to say that I’ve got a lot of the residents really into recycling.’

He is also planning a Jewish Dreaming safari that will take groups into the Australian outback to experience the wilderness from a Jewish spiritual perspective.

And with some effort, Wendy really has it sorted. There’s now a recycling room with bins that are regularly washed. The recyclables are collected from every floor in the hotel and carefully sorted. Hard rubbish is neatly put out and anything that can be reused is reused.

‘I get real satisfaction from it. It’s as good as doing art and craft.’

Wendy also likes to write. She is a regular contributor to Roomers magazine. Her last contributions were a cartoon strip and editorial about life at The Gatwick.

Rabbi Morgan will continue to be involved with TBI as Rabbi Emeritus. He has also joined the staff of the Australian Catholic University as Professorial Fellow in the Faculty of Theology and Philosophy, where he will specialise in Judaism and Jewish– Catholic dialogue.

On a mission to style Margi Corless has been slinging her scissors since the 1960s when she worked cutting and styling hair on ships bringing immigrants to Station Pier. She also ran pubs in South Melbourne during the 1980s, including the first gastro pub, the Star and Garter Hotel. After years in hospitality she sold Margi Corless cuts hair at the Sacred Heart Mission in St Kilda.

Resident Ruth loves the visits and the chance for a new do. her businesses but is still as busy as ever. ‘I cut hair at the Mission and at a couple of the other hostels. I got involved through volunteering at the op shop and it all led from there.

‘I really love it. You meet such interesting people.

Home base for urban gypsy After a life-time of adventure and travel Eileen Ashe found herself in need of a place to call home.

She quickly discovered that the local rental market is not kind to seniors on a fixed income.

Eileen began her life as a traveller. Conceived in London to Irish parents, she was born in Healesville. After studying at Prahran College, she headed

‘In my mid 40s I returned to study interior decoration at RMIT. I was employed in that field until my late 50s when paid work tapered off and was replaced with voluntary work.

‘Not being in full employment made affordable rental accommodation impossible to find. My creative solution was to join a house-minding agency, but I also relied on the hospitality of family and friends. That’s when I gave myself the title the Urban Gypsy.’

‘But house-minding and couch surfing aren’t easy or comfortable, especially when most of the things you love are in boxes. One of the benefits of being a senior is that you are eligible for support from the Ministry of Housing,’ she said.

Eileen now lives in a studio apartment in a garden setting in Elwood, surrounded by her books, music, memorabilia and creative materials.

Passion for crime links sisters After retiring as Assistant Commissioner of Victoria Police, Sandra Nicholson has uncovered a few clues of a different kind.

Sandra is an avid reader and longterm member of Sisters in Crime, a group of local women crime writers and readers, for whom she acts as a co-convenor helping to host events with authors and crime specialists.

Sandra is also a board member of Youth Junction, a project for young people at risk. She’s involved with Navitas, a private university specialising in public safety, drawing on her 35 years in the police force.

‘Having a happy retirement is all about staying connected and active. You have the time now to do all those things you’ve been putting off. I’ve been able to travel overseas, I did a creative writing course at Oxford University, I’ve reconnected with people,’ she says.

Sandra suggests joining a group that interests you, get active on a committee or board aligned with your passions and make the most of the many free activities on offer in Port Phillip and wider Melbourne.

Exploring what makes us smile ELWOOD: Students from St Columba’s, facilitated by the Good Shepherd’s Schools In Community Action (SICA) program, are conducting interviews with Elwood residents.

The Elwood Happiness Project will use a photo survey to find out what makes Elwood residents happy. Students will ask people to nominate out of ten – with one being ‘not at all happy’ and ten being ‘very happy’ – where they fit on the happiness scale.

Residents are then asked to name one thing that makes them happy, write it on a balloon and have their photograph taken with their balloon. The collected images will be exhibited all over Elwood on front fences and in shop windows.

New playground a big hit PORT MELBOURNE: The playground at Morris Reserve has been upgraded with features such as a giant tennis balls and an equally giant tennis racquet that has bouncy springs for strings. There’s also a new piece of fitness equipment for a pre-tennis warm-up or for everyday exercising.

Brekky to support those in need PORT MELBOURNE: The Port Melbourne Business Association and South Port Uniting Care are to host a joint networking breakfast on Thursday 28 November at 7.30 am at 3 Station Pier to raise money for UnitingCare’s Christmas lunch. At lunchtime the Port Phillip Specialist School Choir will perform and the decorated Christmas windows will be unveiled. Late night shopping starts from 6 pm. Choir groups and bands will be performing on every corner in the area.

Council takes on local assets PORT MELBOURNE: The state government and Council have signed a memorandum of understanding for the state to formally hand over to Council the Beacon Cove Promenade and Station Pier public spaces. The assets to be maintained and managed by Council include the carpark, open spaces, decking, and pedestrian and bike paths, along with wet assets such as revetments, piles, retaining walls and pavements over water. Council will also take over the current lessor’s (Major Projects Victoria) obligations for the three restaurant buildings’ leases. Completion of the formal handover is expected within the next few months.

Law and order in cemetery tour ST KILDA: Friends of St Kilda Cemetery is holding two arresting tours. On Sunday 13 October there will be a Ned Kelly tour that visits the graves of many of the people associated with the pursuit, capture, trial and imprisonment of the bushranger. There is also a tour on Sunday 17 November that showcases the architects, builders and engineers who helped build Melbourne. Both start at 2 pm. Both tours meet at the Main Gates in Dandenong Road. PORT MELBOURNE: Clark Street Children’s Centre has been given a splash of colour by local mum Merrin Jensen, who was commissioned to create a mural in the centre’s foyer. To assist her in her work Merrin took close to 500 photographs of the children striding, jumping and playing, and then compiled them to create a master image that could be painted onto the wall.

Men’s Shed Open Day at The Shed Saturday 19 October, 9:30 am – 1 pm PPMSA Shed, rear of St Luke’s Church, 210 Dorcas Street, South Melbourne.

There will be demonstrations of woodworking and displays of community activities, followed by a BBQ lunch.
