Enlightener JUNE 2015 All Stars Nearly 6 months into the year and All Stars After School Club is thriving.

We have 91 children attending the club and making the most of the wide range of activities offered. Our most popular sessions at the moment are Street Dance, where over 20 children aged 5 – 11 years are learning a new dance each half term. At the end of the February/March half term, the children performed the dance they had learned (Uptown Funk) to the school and their parents in an assembly.

We are still offering childcare at All Stars as well as eight alternative clubs including Football, Drama, Orchestra and Street Dance.

UPCOMING EVENTS This year for the 2015 Copplestone Proms we have the exciting and incredible sound of the Locked Horns Jazz orchestra. These very talented musicians and vocalists who’ve performed throughout the South West will be playing up-tempo big band jazz, along with vocalists performing “Come fly with me”, “The lady is a tramp, “Girl from Ipanema”, “That’s Life” and many other fantastic songs. So bring a picnic, bring friends, listen, sing (and if you’re inclined) dance to a superb evening of musical entertainment..

The proms take place from 6 – 8pm on Saturday 27th June. Ticket pr ice for adults is £6 in advance (from Olivia James or the School) or £8 on the gate.

Children admitted free. Ther e will be a bar available for drinks. Bring your family and your picnic and enjoy the evening!

Most of our effort so far this term has gone into finding the best solution for providing additional play equipment for the children, utilising the balance of the funds that we have raised over the last few years.

Within the next few weeks the CPTA will be having a new QUAD play unit installed on the school field at a cost of £6800. We hope the new equipment will provide something for everyone – it is great for coordination, balance and improving children’s strength and fitness. We hope the children will find the new quad exciting, challenging and lots of fun!

The CPTA has also contributed £360 to pay for coaches to take out year 5 children to the Bristol Science Museum and £300 to pay for coaches to take our year 1 and reception class children on a trip to West Town House in support of their topic activities.

The Donkeys are coming!! This years’ Summer Fete and Donkey Derby will be in the after noon of Saturday 11th July. A huge thank you to the fabulous sponsors of the Derby races and the donkeys which will be running in each race – full details in the race catalogue. Come along and have a donkey ride or take part in racing the donkeys down the school field, place your bets and have an afternoon of fun!!

Refreshments, stalls, games and more will be available on the day.

The CPTA provided all the school and pre-school children with some fun activities for Easter this year with an Easter Egg Hunt in the woods – The Easter Bunny even put in an appearance for some of the classes! We also had a great turnout and some incredibly imaginative and creative entries to our ‘decorated egg’ & Easter-themed cake’ competitions – well done to all the worthy winners! Thanks to parent contributions, we were able to provide the children with some good fun, prizes for the competitions, lots of chocolate and just slightly more than break-even.

On a final note I will be stepping down after 3 years as Chairman of Copplestone PTA, and throughout my time I’d like to thank everyone in our fantastic community for supporting all the events that we have produced. From the Proms to the Donkey Derby (people still can’t believe the children race on REAL donkeys) to discos, auction for promises and everything in-between. With your support we’ve raised an incredible amount of money which goes to benefit the children of Copplestone School. This money has paid for worthwhile equipment or trips and many other great experiences and has culminated in some exciting new play equipment being installed.

Many thanks also goes to the incredible team of people who’ve work tirelessly for the PTA and I wish them every success in the future.

Copplestone Primary School The last few months have continued to be an exciting and busy time at Copplestone. In March we celebrated World Book Day by having an entire week dedicated to books and reading! Miss Leach, our English leader, organised lots of amazing events including a visit by author Simon James, a family fun story evening (which involved sharing bed time stories whilst drinking hot chocolate) and dressing up as a book character, amongst many other things. Before breaking up for the Easter holidays, we were very lucky to be able to have a whole school performance of ‘I believe in Unicorns’ by Theatre Alibi, which was fantastic! We have also been fortunate to be able to decorate Yellow, Green, Orange and Rainbow classrooms. These spaces have become lovely, bright learning environments for the children.

For Red class (Year 5) the Spring term culminated in the World of Song concert staged by Crediton Learning Community at the Great Hall in Exeter.

The children performed a song from India in front of an audience of about 900 people and sang beautifully. Since returning from the Easter holidays staff have continued to provide the children with some amazing experiences. During this month some of the Year 5 children took part in the Bikeability course; learning about road safety and about how to care for their bikes. This course was very well received and we are planning to run another one in the Autumn term. Also during May, the Year 6 children took the SATs tests. They were very mature and demonstrated superb learning attitudes by approaching the tests with continued determination and positivity. We were all very proud of them.

Lastly, some of the children in Year 3 and Year 4, along with children from Spreyton School, have been on a three day and two nights residential to Great Potheridge House in Merton. The children were able to take part in a range of activities which included kayaking, archery, orienteering, rock climbing and a low ropes obstacle course. They also got to experience making their own beds and toasting marshmallows around the camp fire! Everyone had an amazing time, despite the lack of sleep.

News from Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1 In Foundation Stage the children have been developing their understanding of animals. They have had several visitors to support their learning, including some cute kittens and tadpoles from our school pond, who will soon be ready to make the hop onto dry land! Another exciting afternoon was had by the children when two tractors arrived at school for them to explore. Year 1 have also been learning about living things and have been busy planting a variety of seeds and bulbs; we are looking forward to seeing the fruits of their labour. In Year 2 the children have spent some time learning about journeys including Captain Cook’s voyage to Australia and about nocturnal animals. Both classes have been able to enhance their learning by going on trips – Year 1 to West Town Farm and Year 2 to Exeter museum.

Our final half term promises to be as exciting and eventful as the last few. We have lots of events coming up, including a Family Thrive course for our children in Blue class, work share assemblies for many of the classes, our whole school sports day, the Year 6 residential visit, induction visits for the new children joining our school and the Year 6 leaving events. It has been an amazing year so far and our thanks go to all the parents and members of the community who have supported us in enabling our children to have these learning opportunities. I would also like to say a big thank you to the staff and children who make Copplestone School such a wonderful place.

News from Key Stage 2 The children in Key Stage 2 have also been incredibly busy. Orange class (Year 4) finished their work on the Romans before the Easter holidays by taking part in a workshop at school. This was an opportunity to work with a Roman soldier and prepare to fight the tribes who might resist the Roman invasion. The children also had the opportunity to study artefacts from the period.

At our March event we held a ‘Generation Game’ evening at Copplestone Church.

We had various professionals come in and demonstrate their skills to the men, who were then asked to replicate what had been shown. The men had a really fun night and attempted cake decorating, flower arranging, bandaging and balloon modeling!

Playzone We have been enjoying a wide range of activities in our toddler group ‘Playzone’ these last few months.

The sessions have been; Small World Experience, Mothers Day & Easter Crafts, The Hungry Caterpillar themed session (with stories, video, crafts and games), and Get Active in Summer.

We are continuing to run the monthly sessions at Copplestone Church, and are really looking forward to our summer trip to Exmouth beach. On July 2nd we will be take a coach of parent/carers and their children to Exmouth to enjoy a day out in the sun! We still have some spaces left for the trip, which leaves Copplestone at 9.15am and will be back in the village no later than 3.15pm. The monthly Playzone sessions are completely free and if you have a child/children under 5 years, you are welcome to come and join us. Our next sessions are ‘Let’s build and make’ on 11th June and ‘The Rainbow Fish’ (Book Theme) on 9th July both to be held at Copplestone Church community hall, 9.30am – 11am.

On July 18th we are holding the ‘Big Event’ which is a men only event being held at Upcott Farm at Wembworthy. The day will be full of activities ‘It’s a Knock-out’ style, finishing with a BBQ and a talk from our guest speaker Steve Legg. This is set to be an amazing day and we would love to invite you to join us.

Spree Camp On July 10th -12th we will be taking a group of 8 – 15 year olds to the Spree Youth Camp at Shobrooke Park in Crediton to join 1000 other young people.

Spree is a annual camp run by Urban Saints which aims to give children an opportunity to explore Christianity in a fun and exciting way. There are endless activities that take place throughout the weekend including kayaking, rock climbing, inflatables, Rap workshops, circus skills, football coaching and tournaments and much, much more.

This year, as well as the visiting speakers, Spree will host Duggie Dug Dug, Stance (dance crew) and Jozzy (Rap artist).

Regenerate Back in April our men’s group ‘Regenerate’ visited the North Tawton Fire Station and were given a tour of the station and a demonstration of some of the equipment that the fire fighters use. We had a great time at the station and are very grateful for the North Tawton crew for being so hospitable.

Copplestone Methodist Youth Church

For youth 11 – 14 years This term in the Grid, as some of the young people approach their GCSE exam period we have spent some time looking at ‘choices’. We have used discussion, games, teaching and prayer to think about how the choices we make affect not only our lives but the lives of those around us. We also looked at methods of ensuring that we make the right choices when it comes to friendships, academia, careers and faith. We have had a great term in the Grid and the Grid members are really looking forward to helping in this year’s Holiday club again.

Sunday mornings 10.45am to 12 noon On Easter Sunday we enjoyed an Easter Egg Hunt at the Recreation field followed by a service celebrating the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

For toddlers 0 – 3 years A lot of fun has been had in crèche learning about different people in the Bible who God used, even though they were small or seemingly unimportant. We’ve also looked at how special we are to God. During story time, we always have a biscuit (or two!) as this helps us to concentrate and then we make a craft to take home which helps us remember what we’ve learnt.

For children 4 – 11 years.

The children have begun preparing for their Kidzone Family Service which will take place on Sunday 14th June at 10.45am at Copplestone Methodist Church. This year our service is based on King Solomon. Over the past few months we have been thinking about different ways to pray.

We have made prayer chatterboxes and thought about different places in the world that need prayer. We have used lego blocks to focus our prayers thanking God for all the things he has given us and also making prayer lilies praising God for his wonderful world. We sometimes have a warm up at the beginning of a session and sing some songs which the children enjoy.

Defibrillator Update

Copplestone Community Choir

Copplestone’s Automated External Defibrillator (AED) has been in place since January and is located on the church wall facing the main road.

Copplestone Community Choir was formed in February 2014. We have 34 members currently, of all ages and over the past year we have really enjoyed learning new songs to suit everyone’s musical tastes!

These range from upbeat pieces performed to great backing tracks, to a capella carols and spirituals. Last month we presented a very successful concert in Crediton, jointly with the Town Band.

The AED is designed to shock the heart back into a functional rhythm for anyone in cardiac arrest and will only do so if appropriate. Reassuringly it cannot accidently discharge a shock! It is linked to the ‘999’ emergency service, which means that when appropriate a ‘999’ caller will be advised of its location. The AED is designed to be used by both trained and untrained people; the user is talked through the simple steps to take as soon as the AED is opened.

We’d love the choir to continue to grow so, if you like singing, do come and join us at our practices on Thursday evenings 7.00pm - 8.30pm at Copplestone Methodist Church.

A training/awareness evening took place on the 10th April, led by Justin Sharples of South Western Ambulance Service (SWAS). The evening included a very interesting and helpful AED presentation and an opportunity to practice CPR on a model; there was very good feedback from all those attending. There will be future yearly training/awareness evenings provided by SWAS as part of our 4 year agreement with SWAS. More details in future Enlightener’s.

Lifespring Lifespring is a gathering of women of all ages and backgrounds. It’s an informal meeting held once a month on a Monday evening. We have time to socialise, share teaching about God’s word for us and to have fun as women of God. At Lifespring, we are committed to seeing women grow in their relationships with God, no matter what stage you are at and to building life-long relationships with each other.

AED’s are becoming more common in community settings throughout the country and there are many reports of their life saving effectiveness. In Copplestone we are fortunate to have one in place and The Café which meets at Copplestone Church every Thursday morning is to include it in its ‘charity of the month’ programme. This will provide an opportunity for our local community to help support this special piece of equipment financially, whilst enjoying a coffee, cake and chat!

Piglets Toddler Group

Several people have commented recently on how friendly and welcoming we are, especially to people new to the village, which is lovely to hear. A large group of us recently went out for a meal in Crediton, giving us a chance to enjoy some child-free time together.

In March we all donned our wellies and waterproofs for an Easter egg hunt at Eggesford Forest. The rain held off for us to go on a bear hunt through the woods and paddle in the stream. It was quite a long walk for little legs and the children all did really well. We then enjoyed a picnic together to finish the term.

The current committee will finish at the end of the term, and on Wednesday 1st July (during Piglets) we will be having an AGM to establish a new committee ready for 2015/16. Anyone who comes regularly is welcome to be on committee – the more the merrier!

Our final event this year will be our summer picnic in the park, with bouncy castle, face painting and games. This will be on Wednesday 15th July at the playground on Sunnymead. We will also be saying goodbye to lots of big girls who are starting school in September.

Summer term at Piglets is always great fun, mostly spent outside with a big selection of ride-on toys, our playhouse and sandpits. We are very grateful to Copplestone Parish Council for their recent donation enabling us to buy some new ride-on motorbikes, as the one we have is always much in demand! When it is too cold or wet to be in the outdoor play area, we enjoy a variety of toys and activities in the hall, with the cars, train track, buggies and puzzles being most popular at the moment, and finish with some singing and instruments.

“A Snap-Shot of God” Welcome to the Summer edition of ''The Enlightener'' - I trust that you'll find much of interest in its pages

Someone said to me ''I don't believe in God.’' My reply was ''W hat kind of God don't you believe in?''

On hearing the answer I commented ''I don't believe in that kind of God either!, because that’s not the God I see in the Scriptures'' Sometimes we say ''I like to think God's like this or like that.'' Christians believe that there is only one sure way of knowing what God's like - its to find out more about him from the Bible ... the above is ONLY a snapshot! Jesus, God made flesh, said ''He who has seen me has seen the Father'' i.e. to look at him is to look at God.

I'm sometimes asked the question, ''What is God like?'' Well the Bible is a book about God! One ‘snap-shot’ of what He (not it - He is personal not a force or a thing) is like is found in Deuteronomy 32 v.4. It is only one snap-shot but let me quote it, ''He is the Rock, his works are perfect, all his ways are just. A faithful God who does no wrong, upright and just is he'' Firstly the God of the Bible is the ROCK. As I write we're enjoying beautiful sunshine and thoughts of summer holidays come to mind! Children often enjoy leaping from rock to rock embedded in the sand at the seaside; they are confident of a sure foothold with rocks that may weigh tons. Rocks like that are stable, secure and strong. So too a rocklike God utterly stable, secure and strong come what may. He is an unchangeable God in a changeable World.

At Copplestone Methodist Church we run ''Christianity Explored'' evenings. They are to find out what Christians actually believe, what God teaches about himself, rather than what we think.

Why not come along, or drop into a time of Worship?

All are welcome - details can be found on the notice board outside the Church or come along any Sunday 10.30am for coffee before our 10.45am service starts or 6.15pm for our evening worship service.

Secondly the God of the Bible is PERFECT ''His works are perfect ... a ... God who does no wrong ... upright ... is He''. These terms combine to picture a God who is without fault. We're not used to perfection in people or things! We might long for a perfect car that never goes wrong, but I certainly have never found one! People and things can let us down.

Men and women have ''feet of clay'' but not so God; He is utterly reliable - perfect - there is no chink in his armour. Therefore he can be trusted, utterly.

A final question, ''Can this God be known?'' The answer of the Christian Faith is YES . We were made for a relationship with him. The chief end of men and women is to know Him and enjoy Him forever. ''For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God'' - not just to know about him, but to know him - 1 Peter 3v.18 Enjoy the sunshine! Enjoy the Son! The Café

Every Thursday 9am– 12noon The Café is open at Copplestone Church every Thursday 9am - 12 noon, during both term time and school holidays*. We serve mouth watering homemade cakes and luxury hot drinks, while offering cold drinks and a small soft play area for the under 5s.

Yes! Holiday at Home time is almost here again!

Monday, Wednesday and Friday, 15th, 17th and 19th June will find a gr oup of enthusiastic Copplestone Seniors enjoying three days of Fun, Food and Friendship, hosted by a group of volunteers from the Church.

Once a month during term time, we have Playzone which meets in the community room 9.30am-11am, which is specifically for preschool aged children and their carers to do activities together while enjoying the benefits of The Café. The next Playzone dates are June 11th and July 9th, and also on July 2nd, we are having our first Playzone outing (email Sean Schofield seansyw@yahoo.co.uk for more details).

Each day begins with breakfast (this year at 9.15 am), continues with an excursion (where to? Ah! Wait and see!!!) with picnic lunch and concludes with a cooked meal at the church before being taken home about 6pm. There is no charge for this holiday but those who wish to make a small donation towards the cost are welcome to do so.

We have Lunch @ The Café on the first Tuesday of every month. This is open 12 noon - 2pm and we offer a scrumptious, homemade 3-course, cooked lunch. June 2nd:

This is now the third year of Holiday at Home in Copplestone. We are all different, and different people have gained different things from previous holidays. Some have found new confidence while others have found refreshment and renewal but I think it would be true to say that for most of those who have come the greatest blessing has been the mutual encouragement they have discovered from enjoying new friendships, a blessing that has continued and grown as folk have met up regularly, between holidays, at the Church Café on Thursdays.

We don't charge for anything at The Café or Lunch, but ask for donations to cover costs. Any money left over is then given to a nominated local charity of the month. Many years ago a very wise man said ’’No man is an island …..’ How true that is! We don’t flourish in isolation! We all need each other and are enriched by the time we spend together. Get Active and Involved In Crediton!

Town Square, 10am - 1pm, 11th July

With half term and the summer holidays coming up, perhaps now is the time to remind readers of some great travel offers from their local Tarka Line station.

This is a call to all who run voluntary and community organisations who would like to recruit more volunteers and helpers in Crediton and the local area.

A book of Carnet tickets, available only at the Copplestone Nisa Store offers exceptional value for money. Aimed mainly at regular users, a book can also be purchased by say a group of five people going to Exeter or Barnstaple for the day. At just £25 for a book of ten tickets that is just £2.50 each way and there are no time restrictions.

On the last morning of the Crediton Festival, the Leisure Centre, Sustainable Crediton and Involve (Voluntary Action in Mid Devon) are joining together to run an event in the Town Square to encourage people to get out and do more - whether that is simply to be more active physically, or get involved in the many voluntary and community groups in the area, as volunteers.

Groups of three or four people can enjoy Groupsave which gives a 1/3 discount on fares almost anywhere on First Great Western’s network. These tickets can be purchased from the conductor on the train.

The Leisure Centre will run activities for children and adults, encouraging people to be more active.

Given the buzz created by the Festival, we hope for a good turn-out. You are invited to book a stall in one of the Farmers Market gazebos, and use the opportunity to engage with people who might become volunteers. There is no charge.

The Tarka Rail Association has lobbied hard and this has been successful in that the first morning train into Exeter and the always busy 1657 return have had an extra carriage since the new timetable last December and this seems largely to be meeting demand.

Unfortunately it hasn’t yet been possible to do anything about the 1527 train but we are pushing hard!

The garden team of Station Friends are now working hard at the station to transform it into an attractive entrance to Copplestone and we hope that they will be able to enter for the national Community Rail Awards later this year. Please see the Garden Club’s article in the Enlightener as I am sure they would welcome extra support in this major venture.

With the future in mind, Copplestone United have enlisted the help of Ben Speirs of Precision soccer to take the training sessions on a Saturday morning with the aim to bring through new young stars. At present he coaches up to 15 players of seven and under.

The club will hold its end of season training and presentation on 16th May at their home ground and in Copplestone School hall. The presentation to reward outstanding performances but as is the custom of the club, all players will receive a Club members trophy.

The club continues to grow at a fast pace as more and more young players join this well run club. Next season Copplestone United will have teams in age groups U8, U9, U10, U11, U12 and U13. With more and more dads taking on the coaching role after passing their FA Level 1 Football Coaching Badge.

Copplestone Rangers U12’s played their league football this season in Division 3. Having no less than 7 new players over the course of the season, this team had a few highs and lows finishing in the bottom half of the league. Although finding it hard, the team grew in team spirit over the season and look forward to playing 11 a side next year.

Copplestone Cobras U11’s had a difficult season playing in the Exeter League’s top division. Paying for their success of last season this team came up against some very good well established Exeter teams. Still enjoying their football the boys battled right to the end turning in some very credited performances.

Copplestone Colts U10’s team of very talented players turned in some great performances and gained some great results winning against some good teams.

The team coaches wait to see what division the Colts will find themselves in next year.

Copplestone Sharks U9’s this season played in the Mid Devon Soccer league playing on Sundays. This was a great season for the boys and playing the mini soccer format had a lot of good results and had great fun along the way. Next season the coaches have opted to enter the Exeter League.

Copplestone Tigers U8’s had a fantastic first seasons introduction to team football. With lots of great results playing in the Mid Devon League on Sundays.

The coaches and players have had a great time this season with all the boys having lots of game time.

Councillor News Dear Copplestone Residents, May I take this opportunity of thanking all those who supported Peter Heal and myself in the recent District Council elections. Peter and I are now returned for the next four years and if you voted for other candidates or did not vote at all we are still your Councillors. Garden Club members have been quietly cultivating large numbers of plants and seedlings for the station in bloom competition. The focus has been on attracting bees and butterflies and making the wait for your train more pleasant. If the weather improves our village station will look a picture throughout summer and not just for the competition.

Peter Heal is Chairman of the Decent and Affordable Homes Policy Development Group at MDDC and will continue to push for more social housing and affordable homes. I will be striving to lift our recycling rate and lower the amount of waste that goes into landfill as I am Vice Chairman of the Environment Policy Development Group. One of the main projects in Copplestone in the next few years is the building of the new Community Hall.

We all need to get behind the committee spearheading this project. On behalf of MDDC, Peter and I will do all we can to support and help.

At the recent Table Top sale in the Church Hall we made a small profit which was shared with Copplestone Recreation Association towards the new village community hall. We did a roaring trade in redcurrant bushes grown by one of our members.

We have received seeds from the ‘Grow Wild’ campaign promoted by the National Lottery and Kew Millennium Seedbank. They have sent out thousands of free packets of English wild flower seeds and ours have been distributed around garden club members and friends and families for growing around our village (growwilduk.com)

I would like to say a special ‘Thank you’ to Gordon Duguid who has just stood down after many years as a Parish Councillor for Copplestone. Gordon was also an active member of the Local Action Group (LAG) at Crediton. We miss you Gordon and thank you for your service over many years.

ACE Archaeology Club By the time you read this we will have done our first excavation of the year. This is our third year at Moistown near Winkleigh and this year we decided to do an extra week in May as well as our usual two weeks in August/September. Back in February Graham Langman, who is a pottery expert, had a look at some of our past pottery finds and helped us to be able to do some identification ourselves. He also had a quick look at some of the finds from our dig at Moistown and identified one sherd as being Saxo-Norman, we were rather excited!

In April, a couple of our members helped us in making willow shields. Forget any ideas of pretty little baskets, this is hard-core basket making. They will be tested, probably to destruction, at the Festival, see details below.

Crediton Branch of ELF Our March fund raising event was a Fun Quiz with pasty supper. This was well attended with 27 teams. and with John, Sue & Kim Lunn as our quiz and score masters.

This was a most enjoyable evening and the Boniface Centre was bursting at the seams with fun loving quizzers! Profit raised for ELF was £1008.

On 22nd February, Maximus Alexander Hunt was baptised by Rev. Lindsey Starrs at our Church. Parents Robin and Keris-Jane, from Copplestone, were surrounded by their family and many friends to witness this happy occasion. The relaxed friendly service, especially involved the younger members of the congregation who made sure that the water was not too hot and presented Maximus and his Godparents with their certificates. We welcome Maximus to the Christian faith and wish him, and his parents, much happiness in their futures together.

Our Easter preparations and celebrations are over for another year. We started with a series of Lent midweek services. On Maundy Thursday, following the Mission Community Service at Colebrooke, Rev. Lindsey Starrs led a short service of Stripping the Altar at St. Mary’s which was followed by a vigil until midnight. Finally on Easter day Rev. Lindsey Starrs celebrated the Risen Christ with a large congregation. Traditional Easter hymns were sung in the festive atmosphere. Everyone commented on the fantastic floral displays that filled every corner of the Church. Following the service fellowship continued with a chat over a glass of sherry and a slice of Simnel cake.

On 20th April Rev. Anthony Geering officiated at the funeral service of Bernard Tonkins from Morchard Road. A full church of family and friends remembered Bernard who died on 5th April aged 88 yrs. Bernard was laid to rest within the churchyard at St. Mary's.

Colebrooke Parish Hall

Finally on 3rd May we held our ‘Songs of Praise Service’ with the hymns chosen by the congregation.

There was a mixture of the more traditional, such as ‘For the beauty of the earth’ and ‘Through all the changing scenes of life’ to the more recent, ‘Shine Jesus shine’ and ‘Be still for the presence of the Lord’. The hymns were dispersed amongst psalms, bible readings and poems ‘Love is come again’ by Crumm and ‘The Parson’ and ‘The ploughman’ by Chaucer. Fellowship continued after the service when everyone enjoyed a glass of wine and a piece of cake.

A spontaneous collection of £54.50 taken at the service was donated to the Christian Aid Nepal Earthquake Appeal. It was an informal, enjoyable evening and we hope to do similar in the future.

Crediton & Copplestone Little PUMA’s & Taekwon-Do

Easter Egg Hunt

Crediton and Copplestone PUMA Taekwon-Do and Little PUMAs have had a great and very busy period.

We recently had our Little PUMAs grading where all our 4 to 6yr olds undertook there DISCIPLINE theme assessment, showing a fantastic level of skill (better than many adults).

On Easter Sunday morning, 38 children (aged 7 months to 11 years) plus their families met at the Recreation Field for our annual Easter Egg Hunt.

Following registration, it was great to see the excited children running around the Field hunting for the 500 lolly sticks which had been scattered all over the field. The children were especially excited to look for and find the three special sticks which featured a cross, Jesus and Easter.

We also had our Taekwon-Do grading where our colour belt members were put through their paces by Master Ray Gayle 8th Degree Black Belt. They had a good solid grading with over a third of our members attaining a Credit pass. To see our members progress and get such great results is amazing.

After the hunt everyone walked down to the Church for bacon butties and prize giving. All the children taking part managed to find some sticks and were rewarded with an

We had a great turn out to the recent Southern Championships in Plymouth, where we had members from our Little PUMAs section and the Taekwon-Do crew participating. We managed to accumulate a total of 23 Gold, Silver and Bronze medals from the event. A BIG well done to all who attended and participated! We are currently in preparations for the next National PUMA event in Swindon in mid June.

Lifeline Alarm

Crediton Food & Drink Festival

A Lifeline alarm provides help at the touch of a button 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The service provides peace of mind to people who feel at risk in their own homes. It gives people the freedom to live their life independently knowing that they can obtain assistance when they need it.

Crediton’s Seventh Food & Drink Festival is taking place on Saturday 13th and Sunday 14th June 2015.

An alarm unit is connected to the telephone line and a button can be pressed to summon assistance. The alarm is also supplied with a remote pendant that can be worn around the neck or wrist to allow help to be summoned from around the house and garden.

This year we are delighted that the Food & Drink Festival will form the first weekend of the month long Crediton Festival which will be opened in a ceremony on Saturday morning featuring the Mayor of Crediton, Frank Letch together with the Mayor of Crediton’s twin town Avranches in France.

The call will be answered by specially trained staff who will contact the people that you have nominated to be contacted in such circumstances i.e. family, friends or neighbours. In the case of a medical emergency the appropriate emergency service will also be called. This service is available to anyone in Mid Devon at a cost of £45.12 per quarter, plus a oneoff £30.00 installation charge.

On the Saturday we are delighted that local chefs and food producers have again agreed to run cookery demonstrations and there will be a wide range of stalls showcasing food and drink from local producers. For our younger visitors we are running a bread shaping competition as well as a quiz and other activities.

Later in the evening we will have live music in the marquee with a chance to sample some locally brewed beers, ciders and other drinks as well as over a dozen tasty food stalls to give you the energy for dancing the night away.

A Lifeline alarm enables help to be summoned at the press of a button, but have you ever thought how your helper would get in to help you if you’d locked the door? If the ambulance service cannot gain entry to your property they will call the police and ask them to force entry.

This could lead to expensive repair bills and leave your property unsecured if you’re taken to hospital.

On Sunday 14th the Festival continues with the focus being the Big Sunday Lunch – a great chance to buy and/or bring food to share and to catch up with friends whilst listening to some more local music.

A Host of Golden Daffodils On a cold, wet Autumn Saturday in 2002, a group of about 8 people met in the village. We were armed with sacks of daffodil bulbs, a variety of garden tools and bulb planters. The plan was to plant the bulbs in the grass verges on the sides of the roads leading into and out of the village.

Copplestone Recreation Association

It was an idea that had come from the late Maurice Leach. He wanted to do something to act as a lasting memory of his dear Mum, Doris, who had died a few years earlier. The planting took most of the day and when it was finished we were soaked to the skin but pleased with our days work and ready for a pint in The Cross.

The Recreation Field is open to everyone and the whole field can be used for any games or picnics.

However, we regret that due to Health & Safety, dogs are not permitted on the field.

A small section of the field is being re-dug and resanded with help from Copplestone United.

About 4 years later with the bulbs beginning to make a lovely show, Maurice became unwell and it was a standing joke within his family that when he said ‘I wonder if I will see the ‘Daffs’ next year?’ they would suggest he took photos to act as a reminder.

Sadly, Maurice passed away last November so did not get to see this years wonderful show.

The grant application for the Community Hall is ongoing, with the optimistic hope that it will be with us by September.

St Boniface Church, Knowle The afternoon of Saturday 16th May brought glorious weather for the Open Garden hosted by Joan Tolley at Carpenter's Cottage, Knowle. The event was well attended and many people took advantage of the opportunity to see Joan's garden in full bloom. Teas, coffees and cakes were served in the church and the event raised over £700 for FORCE. A big THANK YOU to Joan for all the hard work in preparing her garden and to the ladies of the church for baking and providing the refreshments.

Crediton Connect Summer Term Lessons - This ter m I have had the pr ivilege of preparing and leading some RE lessons. I have taken lessons on subjects like suffering, poverty and Jesus as an authority figure.

Christian Unions - Daniel (Cr editon Cong Church Youth Worker), Lauren (Crediton Methodist Youth Worker) and myself run Christian Unions in QE School.

We are delighted to welcome newcomers of all ages to our friendly services, which are held twice every month. There is a priest-led communion service on the first Sunday of the month, which starts at 9am and Morning Worship on the third Sunday of the month is led by Mr. Fred Cann of Copplestone and starts at 10am, followed by refreshments - please come along!

Rock Solid - In the year 7 & 8 Chr istian Union on Wednesday lunchtime we have been growing in numbers. We have been looking at the ‘Golden Rule’ and challenging the young people about how they treat others. After the May half term we will be taking Rock Solid outside to do challenges and ask questions about faith to more young people.

Upper School Christian Union - On Thur sday lunchtimes we have been looking at the UN Millennium Goals and how far the UN have got with these goals. This group are interested in social justice, so it has been great to talk about this with them, looking at what we can do about some of the issues and what God and the Bible says about it.

Games Club - Dan and Laur en r un a games club with the year 7’s & 8’s. They play board games, card games and give young people the opportunity to chat. It is a great bridge to getting young people to come along to Rock Solid.

The Main Event - On Satur day 9th May we took the Christian Unions to The Main Event, a day at Crealy and then an evening event with activities, music, dance performances and the gospel message.

Assemblies - At the end of last ter m we did assemblies for the year 7’s and 8’s about Easter. We used a game and a clip from Mr Bean’s Holiday to look at friendship and forgiveness. We got good feedback and hope to do more assemblies this term.

Youth Groups - It has been gr eat to build greater relationships with young people in the local youth groups this term. I have helped at youth groups at Crediton Congregational Church, Crediton, Bow and Copplestone Methodist Churches. It has been great to build more connections with the young people.

Lots of young people I see at the youth groups, I also see in school. I have seen relationships with the young people deepen and hope that they continue to this term.

Russian Cream This easy recipe makes a lovely dessert or a nourishing ‘pick-me-up’ food.

You will need: 1 pint of Milk 8ozs Sugar 3 Eggs (separated) 1 Sachet Gelatine 1 tsp Vanilla Essence Put all the ingredients (except the egg whites) into a large saucepan and heat until just to boiling point stirring gently all the time, remove from the heat.

Beat the egg whites until very firm then add to the saucepan and gently stir together. Pour into a serving bowl and put in the fridge to set. When set the mixture will have separated, jelly at the bottom and cream at the top.
