Katherine Rankin Becraft October 3, 1924 - February 29, 2012
Katherine Rankin Becraft passed peacefully away at home Wednesday, Feb. 29, 2012, of congestive heart failure. She was born Oct. 3, 1924 in Russellville, Arkansas, to Thomas Jefferson Rankin and Jessie Articia Ashmore. She grew up on a cotton farm in
Florence, after moving with her family from Arkansas. She is survived by her husband of almost 68 years, I. W. “Bee” Becraft; children, Don (Kathy) Becraft of Mammoth and Randy (Gayle) Becraft of San Manuel; six grandchildren and 20

Gabriel F. Sanchez May 3, 1939 - March 1, 2012
Gabriel F. Sanchez, age 72, passed away peacefully on March 1, 2012, at Banner Baywood in Mesa. He had suffered a stroke on February 7, 2012, and a second stroke shortly thereafter that left him with many complications. Gabriel was born in Hayden on May 3, 1939 to Jose and Emilia Sanchez. He was the second child of eight children. He was preceded in death by
Sheriff’s Report The Pinal County Sheriff’s Report is taken from the daily logs, based on the information provided by deputies. All persons arrested are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. Feb. 24 Two reports were made of an individual blocking the roadway and running through the desert naked in the area around East Cowboy Miller Road and East Copper Creek Road, Mammoth. Mammoth Police were asked to assist with the reports and detained an individual near the campgrounds at the Ralph Herrera Shooting Range. Feb. 24 Theft of a twowheel cart was reported in the 1800 block of West American Avenue, Oracle. Feb. 25 An accident with injuries was reported on Calle Futura between Neal Street and Camino Seco, Oracle. The vehicle was found on the road on its top and its driver was unresponsive at first. Oracle Fire Department was called to the scene of the accident. Feb. 25 Theft was reported in the 39000 block of South Winners Circle, Eagle Crest. his first wife, Lucy, with whom he had one daughter (Josie) and three sons (Gabriel Jr., Raymond Sr., Renee Sr.). In December of 1992 Gabriel married Hortencia Sandoval Sanchez who has one daughter, Anna. Gabriel lived his entire life in Arizona, spending most of his adult life in the Hayden/Dudleyville area. He worked 28 years in the mining industry as a heavy equipment operator. Gabriel loved the outdoors, horses, spending time watching the Diamondbacks and just tinkering around the home. Gabriel was gifted with the ability to bring fun and laughter into people’s lives. He could be found whistling, singing and joking with his family and friends. Gabriel is survived by his second wife, Hortencia
Sanchez; children, Josie (Robert) Rutledge, Gabriel (Rosalia) Sanchez Jr., Raymond (Andrea) Sanchez Sr., Renee Sanchez Sr.; stepdaughter Anna (Chris) CruzLichner; brothers, Robert (Lupe) Sanchez, Roy Sanchez, Joe Sanchez, Jimmy Sanchez; sisters, Hegla Sanchez and
Jessie (Bert) Allison; 16 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Services will be held on Saturday, March 10, at 10 a.m. at the San Pedro Valley Baptist Church in
Dudleyville, lead by Pastor Tim King. Luncheon will follow at the church. Gabriel is scheduled to be buried near his parents in Oracle at a later date. In memory of Gabriel, the

Letter to the Editor: More of the same Editor, San Manuel Miner: Sounding More Like A Broken Record Here we go again with another same tune different day with yours truly Patricia Johnson. We already know this woman does not exist, and only knows how to toot rachelle sanchez’ horn on every article she has ever written. It’s actually humorous anymore with this woman always continuing to claim that only certain council members, and citizens of Mammoth are bullies. PJ loves to use the word bully freely when speaking about others, but she has never defended herself from past articles written about her, or wrote anything good about council members she supports? As usual PJ gets her facts wrong and writes to her advantage twisting the agenda discussion items to her and her cronies needs, which sounds
more like desperation attempts to look like poor victims. What she seems to always do is somehow come to the aid of Rachelle Sanchez who I guess needs lots of praising, justification, and lots of pats on the back. It’s as if pj and sanchez know each other, well they must if she does not attend meetings and only collects recording and minutes from the meetings at Town Hall as stated in her past article. This woman always seems to know so much about what’s going on in the meetings without even attending, but now seems to think she knows the citizens too. She writes at the end of her pointless article that it’s time to remove these two from office and not even consider the other three! What does this woman even know about the other three candidates when

The person or persons hiding behind the name Patricia Johnson need to quit acting like cowards, and sign their own name or names. The last part of the article was a dead giveaway on who is involved in writing these same repeated nonsense, better yet garbage responses/opinions. Will the real PJ please stand up? The citizens of Mammoth know why there is a recall election if the four Council Members with their same predictable onesided voting, Chief of Police past and present, and Town Clerk would have all done their jobs. When the citizens of Mammoth filed numerous complaints against former officer Huffaker, absolutely nothing was done to him. This officer harassed the citizens, entered John Hills home without a search warrant while he and his family were asleep
in the night which shook them up, had bad mouthed the Mammoth citizens, tarnished the records of both Officer (Sgt) Mcintosh and former Fire Chief Tino Saiz, citizens complained this officer was untruthful during his investigations & traffic stops, and more complaints were filed under the current Chief of Police, ect... With all the complaints filed on this officer absolutely nothing was ever done about him. This officer was allowed to quit without ever being suspended, while Officer Mcintosh and former employee Officer Rash were severely punished. Officer Rash was suspended then terminated, while Four council members, Mayor Williams, Koch, Ramirez, and Goff refused to hear his final appeal last month. Barcelo, Wickham, and Romo elected to hear the appeal, but were out voted again. How can you vote on something that you know

nothing about? Is it because the only select few get briefed on important matters? This one-sided voting happened to office Mcintosh also, which in his case took 3 votes two meetings (illegal) to finally get their way to punish him. Yet Mayor Williams, Koch, Ramirez, Goff, and Rachelle Sanchez are the same ones who supported Officer Huffaker, and refused to terminate his employment with the Town of Mammoth during a vote at a regular council meeting. It was Barcelo, Wickham, and Romo who voted to have this same officer removed from the department. Why because these same three council members care about the citizens of Mammoth, and also voiced their outrage over this officer’s behavior and lack of disrespect and arrogance he displayed. We also later learned that former Sgt Mcintosh had also recommended this officer to be terminated in writing to the Chief of Police, but instead Mcintosh would later be suspended and demoted to officer. Mcintosh and Rash are still fighting their cases. The recall would not have cost the town any money at all, if Koch and Goff would have resigned as requested by the citizens during a Town Council
Meeting. John Hill presented the town with this option to save money at a meeting, but koch and goff refused to step down. Koch stated the citizens voted me in, so they can vote me out! So as far as money being spent elsewhere instead of the recall, it was not our idea to have a recall in the first place. After the one sided voting kept Officer Huffaker employed by the four council members. The citizens were upset because they were not being heard as usual. While citizens continued to voice how this was wrong outside to Mayor Craig Williams, he would only raise up his hands & arms in the air telling the citizens “then why don’t you have a recall if you don’t like it!” The mayor said this twice as he was walking to his vehicle with an i don’t care attitude! What’s really shocking is how the Mayor now wants to be heard by the citizens of Mammoth by posting two vote signs in his yard? Let me explain why i say this. The last two meetings there was no call to the public and no council comments. Who approves this, yes that’s right the Mayor. So the Mayor wants to shut the citizens up from speaking at meetings, See Letter, Page 12

Letter to the Editor: Babeu, it’s time to resign Editor: It’s time we take a step back and look at the overall picture of what has transpired over the past three years Sheriff Paul Babeu has been running the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office. This is a person who came into office talking about “cleaning up” the office and making it “transparent.” All evidence points to the contrary. In three years, we have
seen the office used for everything at the expense of law enforcement. Some law enforcement personnel of our county have been used as a de-facto public relations machine for the Sheriff’s self promotion. It’s time this comes to an end. How many more deputies will be placed on indefinite paid administrative leave for minor or no infractions? How many more lawsuits
will the county be subject to due to his lack of oversight on the jail? How many more rape kits will fail to be processed on a timely basis? Other law enforcement agencies across the state use RICO funds to prevent crime. What has RICO paid for in Pinal County? Brand new centennial badges that will be worn for a limited time. Military coins, trips, thousands in Arizona Diamondback
tickets and coffee mugs. These are hardly preventative measures for criminal activity – but great PR materials for the sheriff. In one of the worst economic downturns in our nation since the 1930s, the office under Sheriff Babeu’s leadership had the temerity to take 25 of his personnel on a weeklong, $53,000 junket to St. Louis to witness the boss receiving an award. At the
same time, he comes to the Board claiming he needs more and more money to fight crime. For the second fiscal year in a row he is on course to overspend his budget. This disconnect is troubling. His latest scandal is another “brick in the wall” when it comes to questionable judgments by this Sheriff. It is time Sheriff Babeu open up his eyes and see the damage he has done to the office
and the dedicated staff he has under his command. It’s time for the Sheriff to consider the best option and that is to resign immediately so the people of Pinal County can have a law enforcement leader that cares about enforcing the law, not constant campaigning and more recently, doing personal damage control. /s/ Pete Rios Chair, Pinal County Board of Supervisors
Letter to the Editor: It’s time Arizona stands up for the working families Editor: Arizona working families are under attack. Last week, the Republican-controlled State Senate passed several bills in an effort to destroy public unions. One bill would ban the practice of “release time,” by which government employees are paid to do union work, including firefighters and police officers, who may be called on by the government in the case of a disaster. Another bill, would make it illegal for union
dues to be automatically deducted from workers paychecks, making it more difficult for unions to receive funding. These efforts are backed by Americans for Prosperity, a group supported by billionaire brothers David and Charles Koch, who called for its supporters to pressure lawmakers to pass the reforms, including the most damaging bill, SB 1485 – which would prohibit collective bargaining by all governments in Arizona. Without collective bargaining,
unions that represent teachers, police officers, and firefighters would cease to exist. Once again, the Republican Party has proved to be a big tent. A big tent for billionaires and big business. As a Steelworker, I have benefited from collective bargaining for better wages, healthcare for my family, and pension benefits. These are not luxuries. Teachers, police officers, and firefighters – those who educate and protect our children deserve better. In spite of these

Because similar antiunion laws and their supporters have been rejected by voters throughout the country. Last year, Ohio voters repealed a new law, nearly 2-1, that would have limited the bargaining rights of teachers and other state employees. After Wisconsin passed similar laws, two state senators lost their seats and
Republican Governor Scott Walker currently faces a recall. If supporters of SB 1485 want a fight at the ballot box, then so be it. Next, it will be Arizona’s turn to stand

on last year’s first round loss in the state playoffs. The Miners will return four starters in sophomore Anthony Garcia – outfielder, juniors John Ruiz – shortstop and Demetrious Dietz – infielder, and senior Alexander Smith – second base.

Miner Track will make a run for state meet in 2012 By Frank Smith The San Manuel Miner track team will make a run for the state meet in 2012 with first year head coach Maria Lopez at the helm. Coach Lopez will also have the services of assistants William Kotter and Lisa Uttecht. The coaching staff will look to better last seasons accomplishments as the Miners were Boys Southern Region Runner Up and placed three athletes at state. San Manuel lost 19 athletes from last year’s squad but will return Josue Alvarez (12), Kyle Bowman (12), Nathaniel
Lopez (10), Breyden Main (10), PJ Mortensen (12), Wayne Newman (11), Marcos Sierra (12), Colten Smith (10), Robert Spencer (12), Martha Estrada (11), Megan Garcia (10), Nicole Primero (10) and Rosa Reyes (11). Lady Miners look to get back into playoffs By Frank Smith San Manuel head coach Deanne Brewer will look to get back into the playoffs with the 2012 edition of the Lady Miners softball team. The Lady Miners finished #2 in the region behind Pusch Ridge Christian Academy; the ladies went 19 - 11 on the season and 6-2 in conference. San Manuel reached the second round of the state playoffs with a win over Miami 10-0 in the first round and lost in the second round to Willcox 6 - 4.

line-up with the exception of Emmy Lou Clark. So this is a rebuilding year. We have a lot of potential. Most of the kids have the ability to play more than one position. “The seniors who graduated left some pretty big shoes to fill. Two of the former players are starting at Mesa Community (Jessica Castro), and Pima (Noelle Medina).” The Lady Miners will head over to Ray on Thursday with the varsity playing at 2 p.m. and the JV starting at 4 p.m.
Little wrestler Rodriguez competes in area tourneys By Frank Smith Nine year old, Gilbert Rodriguez, a fourth grader at Mountain Vista has been busy wrestling in three Junior High Tournaments and two Free Style USA Tournaments. Gilbert traveled to the Sunkids Junior High Tournament in Tempe, in his first match he lost by fall in 2:50, in his second match he won by fall in 2:10, in his third match he won by decision 7 – 4, in the fourth match he won by decision 5 – 1, and in his fifth match he lost in overtime 4 – 2, placing fourth in the tournament. At the Benson Junior Tournament, Gilbert won by decision 4 – 0, won by fall in :45, won by fall in :56 in the championship. Gilbert was named the Most Outstanding Wrestler and placed 1st. He wrestled at Boulder High School in Anthem, won by fall in 1:25, won by
decision 5 – 1, lost 8 – 3, won by fall in :25, won by fall in 2:15, placing third in the tournament. He also wrestled at the Freestyle USA Wrestling
Tournament in San Manuel, won by fall in his first match in :20, lost by decision 2 – 0, son by fall in :50, won by fall in :45 placing second in the tournament. He also took part in the Thorobreed Classic in Phoenix this past weekend, in his first match he won by fall in 1:10, won by decision 11 – 1, won by fall in 1:15, lost by decision 3 – 2 placing second in the tournament. Gilbert will be traveling to Prescott on March 10th for the Rocky Mountain Nationals.

Infant and early childhood development screening set for Tuesday, March 13 Early Child Development Screening will be held in San Manuel on Tuesday, March 13, at the school district’s auditorium. The screenings will begin at 9 a.m. and end at 2:30 p.m. Interested parents should call Monica at First Avenue Elementary 385-4341 to schedule a time for their child to be screened. Walk in appointments are also welcome. These screenings are provided free to any child living in the school district who is under the age of 5 (but not eligible for kindergarten in the fall of 2012). Children currently enrolled in the district’s preschool programs or Head Start programs have already participated in screening and do not need to attend. Enrollment information for the school year 2012-2013 for the district’s preschools will be available. The school district’s Early Child Development Team will conduct the screenings for the children between the ages 2 years 10 months and 4 years old. The Early Child Development
Team is made up of preschool teachers, a speech pathologist and a school psychologist. An Early Intervention Specialist from AzEIP will provide the screenings on any child who is between the ages of birth and 2 years 9 months old. AzEIP is a statewide system of supports and services for families with children who are between birth and 3 years old. All children taking part in the developmental screening will be observed for the following developmental skills: hearing and vision; muscle coordination; speech and language skills; cognitive development; social skills and self-help skills. The results of the screening will be shared with the parents and suggestions and recommendations for each child screened will be offered to the parents before they leave. Annual golf tourney set for Education Foundation By John Hernandez The Mammoth-San Manuel Education Foundation will be holding its Third Annual Benefit Golf Tournament on Saturday, March 10, at the Hayden Golf Course. The tournament will have a 9 a.m. fly over start. This is a four-man scramble format. Mulligans and raffle tickets will be sold at registration. There will be prizes for longest drive, closest to the pin and a slit the pot opportunity. Entry fee is $45 per person which includes golf and lunch. Golf cart rental is an additional $5 per person. Entry fee after March 7 is $55 so sign up early as spaces are limited. The Hayden Golf Course is located at 624 Golf Course Boulevard, Hayden. three-month-old baby fell onto the ground while being removed from a vehicle. When the car seat was pulled from the vehicle, it was discovered that the baby hadn’t been belted in. Oracle Fire Department responded to the scene and the baby was transported to a Tucson hospital for treatment. Feb. 28 Fraud was reported in the 64000 block of East Coronado Court, SaddleBrooke. A woman reported that she had been contacted by a person claiming to be representing “Publishers Clearing House” and was requested to give them $3,500 to claim her prize. She provided the caller with her bank information. When she reported it to her bank, they requested that it be reported to PCSO and that

However we did get to walk into the last months council meeting with a quote written on the white board in blue marker so we can all see, which said and was written just like this “Rumors are carried by haters, spread by fools , and accepted by idiots”!!! So i guess call to the public is now gone from the agendas, while written attack quotes on the citizens of Mammoth is now part of the new council meetings ran by the mayor. Those council members and candidates are the same ones who claim their going to be the team that can lead Mammoth into the future according to their voting signs. The citizens will not have a voice about any issues because you will not be heard by the Mayor Craig Williams (James) at regular council meetings. Now with this recall election coming March 13th, 2012 the ballot is confusing, and probably planned this way to throw voters off. Yee-haw! Dem artist youngins at Mountain Vista lasso up some awards By John Hernandez Oracle School District Art Teacher Merry Lewers had her students in Kindergarten through eighth grade participate in an art contest. The contest was sponsored by the Parents Teachers Organization (PTO) and Mountain Vista School. The Rodeo Art Contest winners were announced Wednesday, Feb. 29. Students had to draw pictures with a rodeo or western theme. All participants received a goodie bag. The Judges for the art contest were Karen Medley, Merry Lewers and Frank Palazzolo. Maria’s Ristorante & Pizzeria in Oracle. Besides being an artist in the kitchen, Frank paints. Many of his paintings hang on Nonna Maria’s walls. Frank will have his artwork on display at his restaurant as part of the Oracle Artists Studio Tour on April 14 and 15.
