Hayden Seniors lead Lobo Wrestlers at state

The Hayden High School Seniors, Francisco Moreno and Manny Armenta, end their season by wrestling deep in the state wrestling championship tournament held on Feb. 14 and 15 in Prescott. Moreno placed in the top eight at the 195 lb. weight class. He won four matches and lost two. Armenta won three matches and lost two finishing in the top 12 wrestlers at the 170 lb. weight class. “Both wrestlers saved their best wrestling for the state tournament,” said Gregorich.

Gary Hill, a member of Church of the Good Shepherd, displays the tickets which he, and other members of the church will be selling for the annual Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper on Tues., Mar. 4, which is a benefit to end malaria, around the world.

Pancake Supper benefits Malaria eradication Kearny - Malaria is a disease caused by parasitic protozoans, which are spread by the bite of infected mosquitos. The organisms enter the body through the saliva of the mosquito,, invading the circulatory system, then, Continued on page 12

“They beat some tough opponents and put a positive end to a great season for themselves and the Lobo Wrestlers.” Junior Juan Diego Hernandez and Sophomore Antonio Treviso also won two matches at state and lost two. The season ended in a crazy way because of the postponement of the section wrestling tournament schedule in Benson on Feb. 7 due to a skin infection. Gregorich said, “I have been around wrestling for 40 years and have never seen a post season wrestling tournament postponed due to a relatively common skin problem in wrestling. I guess it is better to be safe when it comes to student health.” The AIA and health officials perceived the infections found on some wrestlers as a potential harmful outbreak and dangerous to the wrestlers. Gregorich commented, “The delay of one week worked to our advantage because Moreno was hurt and may have needed to sit out the

sectionals and would not have qualified for state. In addition, the entire wrestling team had a chance not only to watch the state wrestling tournament, but to participate in the event.” “I have always believed that the first step for any wrestler is to get to the state tournament, the next is to place at state. This crazy finish to the AIA wrestling season will help the Lobo wrestling program take the next step,” Gregorich added. The larger than normal state wrestling championship event

took more time, especially the first day of wrestling. Day one ended after midnight. This didn’t provide much sleep for Moreno and Armenta but they said that the adrenaline of wrestling the second day at the state wrestling championship tournament keep them fired

up. “The experience of participating in the state wrestling tournament, especially for the young wrestlers will build confidence. It isn’t enough just to go to state next year, we want to take home some

Heartbreaking end for Lady ‘Cats basketball

By Andrew Luberda Copper Basin News The Bearcats faced the Desert Christian Eagles in the 1st-round of the Division IV State Championship last weekend. After leading the Eagles at the end of each of the first 3 quarters, the ‘Cats were outscored by 7 points in the fourth and eventually lost in heartbreaking fashion, 46 – 44. The 23rd-seeded Bearcats were one of the last teams to make the tournament field of 24 teams and dominated the 10th-seeded Eagles from the beginning. It was a shocking end to the game as well as the season for the Bearcats. Sophomore Stormee Galka scored a team-high 20 points and was 1 of 2 ‘Cats to score in double figures. Junior Sideny Chenoweth added 12 points. The loss marks the end of their high school careers for seniors Breauna Hathaway, Chris Coryell and Ashley Meza. Hathaway (4 pts), Coryell (2 pts), and Meza (3 pts) each scored in their final appearance as Bearcats. The ‘Cats will look to build on the suc-

cess they developed toward the end of the season. Leading scorers Stormee Galka, Sideny Chenoweth, and Savannah Willis will return to lead a talented and experienced group next year.

traveling to the liver where they reproduce. The flu-like symptoms include fever and chills. If left untreated, severe complications can develop , leading to death. According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), by 2010 an estimated 219 million cases of malaria occurred worldwide and 660,000 people died; 91 percent of whom were in Africa. The most recently collected data indicates an alarming increase in malaria cases reported in the United States. To learn more about the symptoms and treatment of malaria, please visit the CDC website at http:// www.cdc.gov/malaria/ The United Methodist Church is teaming with the Gates Foundation, and with other Christian denominations, for an all-out push to eliminate malaria from the earth. This is being accomplished through research, support of existing programs: especially distribution of medicines and mosquito nets, and, the creation of new approaches to end this endemic disease. Tickets are on sale for the benefit Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper, which will be

held at Church of the Good Shepherd, in Kearny, on Tues., Mar. 4, from 5 pm - 7 pm. All proceeds will go to ‘Imagine No Malaria’, a global fund seeking to eradicate the source of malaria; especially in Africa. The dinner will be served in Ray Hall. Tickets are available, ahead of time, from church members, and tickets will also be sold at the door. Shrove Tuesday is always the day before Ash Wednesday, which is the beginning of the Lenten season, which leads up to Easter. Shrove Tuesday originated in medieval times, as people feasted on their richest and fattest foods before the fasting associated with Lent began. What could be more decadent than piles of crispy-edged golden pancakes, well-browned sausages and tasty beverages to wash them down with? This annual event has long been a highlight of the community. This year, the church is inviting everyone in the Copper Basin to take part by purchasing tickets and enjoying a tasty meal, in support of the congregation’s work toward the elimination of malaria.
