PROGRAMME

12-20 AUGUST 2023
COPENHAGEN PRIDE WEEK

WELCOME TO COPENHAGEN PRIDE WEEK!

It is our pleasure to welcome you to this year’s Pride celebrations in Copenhagen! We are also proud to share an ambitious nine-day program with you all. As always, the programme has been thought up, planned, and will be executed by our incredible volunteer groups - a huge thank you goes to them for their hard work in creating this event.

Indeed, our movement has only achieved things when we have come together. Which

BSP EVENTS

The Body and Sex Positive events are an important part of the programme, where we aim to create a safer space. The events center around subjects such as sexuality, sex, the body, gender and life experiences as a LGBTQ+ person. Our BSP content is presented through workshops, presentations and talks. For some events are subject to limited capacity and therefore require signing up beforehand.

In order to create a safer space for the participants, there are specific rules for the BSP events. The doors close when the events begin, so please be on time.

The rules are:

is why this years theme of Copenhagen Pride Week 2023 is Come Together

The decriminalisation of homosexuality (90 years ago this year in Denmark), equal age of consent, registered partnerships, adoption rights, legal gender recognition, hate crime legislation, the list goes on but all have only been possible because we could come together.

And now, in 2023, the need to come together has never been greater.

Nationalists, the far right, evangelical Christian groups, and gender critical and ‘anti-woke’ movements, and many others want to slow and reverse the progress we have made. To challenge these destructive and hateful narratives, and to support the LGBTI+ community globally, we must once again come together.

The events will take place in a closed-off room where photography or filming is not allowed. Tagging the participants on social media is also not allowed.

Doors close when the event begins. To avoid interruptions, it will NOT be possible to arrive late for BSP events. Please be on time.

What happens in the room, stays in the room. Respect the discretion of all participants and do not discuss the event or mention personal information obtained from the event with people who were not present.

And with that in mind, we invite you to join us for the biggest and boldest Copenhagen Pride Week yet. It is our sincere hope that we can create a space for the LGBTI+ community to come together in joy, understanding, and with curiousity for one another’s lived experience.

WELCOME!

THE REFLECTIONS + FVN + BAMBI MILAN

The Reflections are a new Danish band represented by Queer Music Agency. With a baggage full of sassiness, FVN is heading for the stars. It’s girl power for all the money when FVN takes us into her rap universe. DJ Bambi Milan plays House in most of its forms, but preferably a lot of old school house to honour the LGBTI+ roots, mixed with a lot of new stuff and a few pop hits to get the party started.

Venue: Pride Week Stage

20.30-21.40

BETTY BITSCHLAP + TANDEM

Betty Bitschlap is Denmark’s only music publishing drag queen. But even though she is queer, her music is straight forward. And Betty is a serious pop girl who delivers great songwriting, catchy music and high-level production. Tandem is two young men who let music pierce through their thick skin, making it pour out with unfiltered emotion. On stage, Tandem focuses greatly on creating an immersive experience. With their odd, spontaneous stage presence, the duo aims to subject both newcomers and long-time fans to a well-deserved mixture of laughter and tears.

Venue: Pride Week Stage

21.00-08.00

IF I CAN’T DANCE, IT’S NOT MY PRIDE

To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the abolition of Danseforbuddet, which for decades prohibited men from dancing together in public spaces, the nightclub Den Anden Side and Copenhagen Pride are hosting an event to

celebrate the dance communities in Copenhagen that continue to resist oppression and queerphobia. With talks, dance workshops, live performances curated by choreographer alex blum and DJ sets by Sekena Ali, DJ Nah Care, and others, Den Anden Side creates space for the politics of dancing bodies.

Together we create a musical space where queer people can come together and participate in a meaningful and creative community, singing familiar pop songs regardless of previous musical experience. We will be working towards a short performance on Pride Week Stage for those who would like to be a part of this. It will take place in the afternoon on Tuesday 15 August.

Venue: The Community Tent

13.30-15.00

VYTAS

14.00-14.45 / FREEDOM RIGHTS UNDER PRESSURE

Globally, we see well-coordinated efforts to limit sexual and reproductive rights. LGBTI+ rights and the right to abortion in particular are under pressure, and we see these tendencies from the USA spreading globally. In this debate, the panellists will discuss international perspectives on sexual and reproductive rights, Denmark as a forerunner, and how we (politicians and civil society) best can support the national, European, and global fight for freedom to love who you love and be who you are.

LGBTI+ PERSONS AND THEIR PARENTS

A large number of LGBTI+ people have conflicts with their families due to the family’s lack of acceptance of

their gender identity and/or sexuality. Some experience getting thrown out or end up in a shelter. At the same time many experience a longing for their family’s acceptance and love. We will, together with parents from Sabaah’s parent network and experts, talk about the complexity of these conflicts and share our experiences with building bridges between children, parents, and civil society.

Venue: Hovedkassen at City Hall

Participants: Sabaah

PARENTAL LEAVE RIGHTS FOR LGBTI+ PEOPLE

On 1 January 2024, the legislation on parental leave will expand with new possibilities for rainbow families and single parents. Join this event to know more about the work put into this new legislation and get an introduction to the new rules. Why did the Danish federation of workers take part in this work, and what part of the new legislation would you have to pay attention to?

ALLIANCES BETWEEN MINORITIES

No one’s free until everybody’s free. But how do we do this in practice? How do we ensure that the fight for freedom and equality - where we have gotten more aware of the intersections there are - becomes intersectional? How can we aid each other between different minority groups and organisations and together make each other stronger? And how do we ensure that no one is made out to be the scapegoat? This, and much more, will be discussed by a panel consisting of minority organisations.

Venue: Debatteltet

15.00-15.45

JUSTICE COMMITTEE ON HATE CRIMES

In 2023, a new police framework will be negotiated which frames the police’s finances and priorities for the next year. But how will this framework better ensure that the legal rights of queer people are met? Lev og Lad Leve invites you to an open session in the Justice Committee of parliament, where we will ask the different political parties’ spokesperson on law and justice how queer people’s rights and the rule of law are improved in the new framework.

IN A WORLD WITH BI+PHOBIA Bi+sexual, bi+romantic (and other terms that are sometimes used synonymously) are by many viewed as something dangerous or something to avoid. Despite the fact that these terms fit the most people within the LGBTI+ community, knowledge about us is limited and often misunderstood – and that leads to prejudice! Many bi+people therefore understandably choose to lay low. But we need to make sure there is also room for those who want to educate

others. This requires a community –Come Together!

Venue: Hovedkassen at City Hall. Participants: LGBT+ Denmark

15.00-16.30

WORKSHOP: DEI

Does your company want to improve on their work with Diversity, Equity and Inclusion? Are you interested in what measures your company can do that will support the wellbeing of minorities at your workplace? Bring a few colleagues and enjoy an inspiring afternoon workshop on DEI measures. You’ll get tips for the easy measures that will get you going before embarking on the more complex ones.

Venue: Vartov (Mathilde Fiber)

15.00-16.00

SEX, DRUGS AND SELFCARE

Sex on drugs is not a new thing in the LGBTI+ community – but it has become more widespread within recent years. And with more people using drugs, consequences, such as overdosing, follow. How do we best take care of each other – and ourselves? What do you do when someone is overdosing? Who do you call and what do you do after? Alongside Den Anden Side, we at the AIDS Foundation invite you to join us for an open and frank talk where you will learn how to keep your cool if things go awry.

Venue: The Community Tent Participants: The AIDS Foundation

15.00-16.00 (on request)

ACCESSIBLE LGBTI+ LITERATURE?

What is the current state of the prevalence of LGBTI+ literature in Denmark? In this conversation, we focus on the active effort it takes to make LGBTI+ literature accessible – and why it’s so important that

we do so. Authors Karin Lützen and Susanne Bösche will read from their own works, and Julie Ahle Dybvad, editor at SAGA, and Tobias de Fønss Wung-Sung, long-time volunteer at LGBT+ Denmark’s library, will provide the framework.

Venue: The Corner

ACCESSIBILITY AT PRIDE

We strive to create an inclusive space. At Pride Square, you will find accessible toilets next to the 7-Eleven tent.

On 17-19 August, we will have a wheelchair platform located by the fenced-off Dragon Fountain in the middle of the square. The other days, there will be a designated area available for wheelchair users.

Again this year, we are participating in the Sunflower Scheme, which shines a light on hidden disabilities. You can get a lanyard at the Pride Merch store free of charge.

QUEER ASYLUM – AN UNCERTAIN LIFE IN DENMARK

LGBTI+ refugees who were granted asylum because of persecution in their countries of origin based on their sexuality or gender identity still lack a sense of security in Denmark. Permanent residence permits are hard to obtain, and refugees must reapply for a new temporary residence permit every year or two. The panel features LGBTI+ refugees sharing their experiences with living in this uncertainty, along with PhD scholars discussing their research.

But what about the children! Transphobia and the fight against drag queens are growing. Much of the hatred and many of the arguments start in the USA and in England, and several of those are repeats of arguments seen previously. Cybernauterne will in this live recorded special episode of their podcast take us on a journey through it all, so that we might better understand the wave of transphobia currently flooding Denmark.

FREEDOM OF SEX & SEXUAL LIBERATION

How does asexuality fit into the narrative of sexual freedom? Is freedom from sex a viable standpoint under the banner of sexual liberation? Sexual liberation has become part of the national narrative in Denmark, and the recent discussions of consent are another key to promoting equal sexual relations. But with the emphasis on being able to say yes and act out sexuality in all its diversity, people on the asexual spectrum can feel overlooked and trapped.

What impact does it have on your wellbeing and opportunities and on the resistance you may face what city or municipality you live in? Is everything greener, better and safer in Copenhagen? MARKUSSEN & RAABO

Markussen & Raabo put lyrics and delivery at the forefront. In a mellow soundscape, they insist on an experience of presence and empathy. The album “Holbæk Station” grew out of their experiences as teens and resonates with the time and the town where they grew up and eventually came out as gay. The 1980s was a time of existential questions, Cold War, environmental challenges, and AIDS. It’s a long time ago but both on an intimate and global level, Markussen & Raabo’s songs are still relevant today.

WHEN DID DRAG BECOME DANGEROUS?

In March there was a demonstration outside Frederiksberg library because two drag queens performed for children. In the US several states have passed laws banning drag shows for children. The phenomena and the arguments quickly traverse the digital highways and have gotten a foothold in Denmark. What is this movement and what are the arguments they use against drag? Why do we, again, experience children being at the centre, and how should we counter the anti-drag and anti-trans groups?

In Denmark we have a highly developed system for fertility treatment that helps childless people with fertility treatment. Double donation is fully legal for cis-hetero couples that cannot have children. On the other hand cis-women, non-binary and trans men cannot legally access partner donation (pregnancy with a partner’s egg) without a medical reason. Is it not high time to change the law, or are there still medical arguments against partner donation?

/ THE HUMAN LIBRARY

The Human Library is a library of people. However, instead of books, people are being lent for conversations. The starting point for the concept is that we all could benefit from having our prejudices’ challenged. For that reason, the library creates a safe space for conversation where challenging topics can be discussed and talked over without condemnation. The human books each represent groups in the society who have directly or indirectly been exposed to prejudice, bias, and discrimination.

Discrimination of LGBTI+ persons sadly exists in the Danish State Church and other denominations. Diana Diamond is a Danish drag queen known for winning the first season of Absalon’s Drag Race and performing everywhere from Comedy Zoo, Pumpehuset and Reffen. She received a lot of attention when she

DIFFERENT FROM THE OTHERS + EDMUNDO

Considered to be one of the first pro-homosexual films in the history of cinema, Different from the Others is about a homosexual concert pianist named Körner, who is blackmailed by the corrupt Bollek. In the process, Körner’s budding relationship with a young music student is ruined, and when he goes to the authorities, both he and Bollek are hit by the then-current Section 175, which criminalised homosexuality. The film is screened in collaboration with Goethe-Institut Dänemark. The short film, Edmundo, depicts the young Edmundo, who is forced to return to his parents’ home in the city he left to study and discover new realities. Here, he reconnects with childhood friends, rekindling a series of untold truths, facing him with unresolved feelings and the fear of being trapped in a universe where he feels unhappy.
