Cooroy Library celebrates 1st birthday

Not my fave

IT’S funny how the strangest things become so popular … like ‘planking’. As much as it’s now banned everywhere because of over zealous plankers planking to death, if you choose your location it seems to be quite a safe activity. Pretty sure it’s just lying across random objects on your stomach. My planking is done expertly on my bed, and after a particularly long business lunch, on the office floor. It’s the perfect sport for the lazy player. Now when asked what I did on the weekend, I no longer have to say I just laid around, I say “oh just a spot of planking”. I certainly did a lot of planking when I received my $1000 electricity bill last week. I’ve now turned into my father prowling through the house ranting “that’s six lights I’ve just turned off, the place is lit up like Christmas tree …obviously there are some adjectives I have left out there, and if expletives could generate power we’d be able to sell it back to the grid. I’ve also banned heaters this winter. There will be a lot of layering and, no doubt, a lot of screaming as the coldblooded member of the family (me) tries to stick my icy feet up everyone’s jumpers. So there you have it Locations, lazing and lights Tripping over a planker in the dark not my fave!

Pictured above: Cr Lew Brennan with some of the dedicated and enthusiastic Cooroy Library staff and volunteers THE Cooroy Fusion Festival held on Saturday, May 21st, brought the community together in celebration of the Cooroy Library’s 1st birthday. Hundreds of people turned out to enjoy the event which offered something for everyone with demonstrations, music, rides, workshops, markets and displays. The Budget – the joke you have to take seriously The Budget’s here once more, and the whinging season starts, Everyone cries “foul’, and all sensible debate departs. The place is awash with experts, consultants, yapping politicians, And the budget becomes confirmation, of our worst suspicions. Economists emerge from the woodwork, stirring up the friction, Their arguments with each other, full of contradiction. Economics is one profession, where you can reach a lofty height, Without, in your whole career, ever being right. The Treasurer appears on the television, to unveil all the mystery, The longest amateur hour, to be performed in modern history. His right hand’s pulling gifts, from his Santa Claus sack, But he doesn’t reveal his left hand, will take most of it right back.

Budgets are designed by Treasury, advised by the Party in power, Obviously consuming, many a bureaucratic man-hour. It’s plain to see they are intended, as a form of self-protection, To make sure they’ll gain some votes, and win the next election. The media interviews former Treasurers, who never ever get things wrong, And Prime Ministers of earlier days, who love to tag along. So called ‘battlers’ the mortgagees, who feel badly done, Although some of these mortgagees, often have more than one!

One thing Governments all get wrong, in my humble estimation. Is to spend more money on Defence, than we do on education. This means we can build more arms, like bombs that are really smart, But when it comes to making kids be smart, the system falls apart.

No one’s ever happy, with any kind of Budget, And everyone’s quickly ready, to criticise and judge it. Everyone has his own axe to grind, and complain they’re badly done by, And as they decry their situation, a tear comes to their eye.

We don’t want to suffer another global Great Depression, When the world was taught a bitter financial lesson. We now live in a wonderful country, our living standards high, And that comfort demands a price, and some taxes easy to justify.

Budget cuts funding for Cooroy to Curra THE Labor Government’s 2011 Budget not only failed to allocate desperately needed additional funds to upgrade the notorious Cooroy to Curra section of the Bruce Highway, but actually cuts funding from the existing construction project, Federal Member for Wide Bay Warren Truss said. “In a move that will shock motorists who use the Bruce Highway, The Federal Labor Government’s Budget stripped funding from the Section B Sankey’s Road to Traveston Road project and robs Peter to pay Paul by applying it to other projects on the Bruce Highway,” Mr Truss said. “Federal Transport Minister Anthony Albanese is well aware of the urgent and vital need to four lane the entire Cooroy to Curra stretch of the Bruce Highway as soon

as possible. He has met with community representatives and ambulance officers, he has heard from family members who have suffered loss on the road, and he has seen countless reports detailing the statistics of fatalities and hospitalisations as a result of tragic accidents that have occurred on that section of Highway. “Yet he not only stubbornly refuses to allocate funds to upgrade this deadly section of Highway, he has now disgracefully and hypocritically transferred funds away from it. This decision could jeopardise the safety of motorists on what Mr Albanese himself calls the worst section of Highway in Queensland,” Mr Truss said. Budget paper 2, Page 270, reports that $325.4 million will be stripped from the Ips-

The Hive: Business Coaching & Networking WELCOME to the Hive! The Hive is a not-forprofit organisation with a passion to help local businesses through monthly Business Coaching & Networking breakfasts. What’s in it for you? Firstly, the Hive gives practical strategies each month to grow your bottom line through networking and business coaching; secondly, it will help you to buy back some time to restore some balance into your life; and thirdly, it gives you a support network to lighten the load. The Hive accomplishes this through business coaching, networking and team building. Each month a guest speaker provides outstanding teaching on all things business and these talks are linked to a workbook so that strategies learnt can be implemented straight away. Its launch will be a dinner on Thursday, 16th June at the Cooroy Hotel at 7pm in which International Business Expert, Bernie Dymet will be speaking. Following the launch, Hive members will meet over breakfast on the third Thursday of each month. Businesses are given an opportunity at the breakfasts to put an offer on the table from their company’s products or services and may deliver a short talk about their offer. Your first teaching session is free and then just $69 per month to be a networking member, $99 if staff attends with you. For more information please call Jeanette Rachinger 0418 824 079. THE winner of the $100 voucher in the Cooroy Shoes & Accessories Mother’s Day draw was Andrea Barton from Brisbane who was staying with her family who live in Cooroy. Andrea has given her winnings to her sister.

wich Motorway and the Bruce Highway Cooroy to Curra Section B because the “the funding will not be required.” Mr Truss said that it was common knowledge that the Section B project was running under budget but if spare money was available it should have been used to immediately start construction of Section A. “It is unthinkable that Mr Albanese could again pass up the opportunity to speed up the Highway reconstruction and establish a timetable to upgrade the entire Cooroy to Curra section to four lanes. “When the Coalition was in Government we allocated funds and committed to completing the section by 2020. Labor is either incompetent or negligent or both for again failing to do the same.”

Reprieve for pool safety deadline! WE recently reported on the need for pool owners to ensure that their pools were registered with the Pool Safety Council by the 4th May. At the very last minute, this deadline was put back by six months until the 4th November. This was reportedly to allow ‘the government and the community to focus on flood and cyclone recovery efforts’ but in reality, it is also thought to be a reflection of the enormity of the task at hand. At the start of the pool safety initiative, it was estimated that there were 325,000 registered pools in Queensland and up to a further 250,000 unregistered. This includes both above ground and spa pools.Local Pool Safety Inspector, Chris Bell of Pool Fence Approvals, has already registered many pools for owners in and around the Cooroy region. He has been surprised at the lack of information out in the community on what their obligations are. His advice is to not assume that your pool is registered, but to check it! Apparently, an alarming number of pools have been ‘lost’ in the transfer from the local council records to the new register with the Pool Safety Council. Registering a pool is easy. Simply go

to www.dip.qld.gov.au and click on ‘Pool Safety Register’ and then “Register Your Pool’. Enter your address or real property description [from your rates notice] and it will show if your pool is registered. If it isn’t then alert the Pool Safety Council by way of the ‘tool’ provided. Alternatively, call 5447 7737 and Pool Fence Approvals will do it for you and at no charge! The other date to remember is the 8th July 2011 since this is the new date that owners of rental properties need to obtain a pool safety certificate by. If there is change in tenant or a new lease signed before then, a certificate must be obtained at that time, unless the owner notifies the tenant, by way of a form 37, that there is no safety certificate for the pool. Selling a house also requires a pool safety certificate and in fact it now forms an integral part of the real estate contract in much the same manner as smoke detectors and electrical safety switches do. Any further request for information or to make a booking for a safety inspection, contact Pool Fence Approvals on 5447 7737 or send an email to chris@poolfenceapprovals.com

Proposal to expand Conondale sand and gravel extraction raise concerns

BOUQUETS & B R I C K B AT S BRICKBATS to the 2 female small business owners in Cooroy who criticize and treat customers with indifference and disdain. Hot and cold attitude towards myself and my friends does not sit well with me, consistency and manners are the key! I don’t think the economic climate is “hot” enough to be so impolite and downright rude. You should be bending over backwards and going out of your way to hold onto your regulars. No longer will I refer friends and acquaintances your way – and myself, I will be taking my purse elsewhere after giving you both several opportunities to redeem yourselves!!! BRICKBAT to the driver of the big green tractor with a council trailer on the back who was on Skyring Creek Rd on Monday 9/5/11. No thanks for backing over and destroying my letterbox 5 days before my place goes up for auction, you didn’t even let me know, let alone apologise! I saw you out there and the tyre marks lead right back over what’s left. Big thumbs down to you. BOUQUET to organisers of the Rotary Club of Cooroy’s Charity Golf Club. A great day was had by all. BOUQUET to Craig at Tyrepower for your immediate help with our tractor tyre. Many thanks, Cooroora United Football Club. BOUQUET to the friendly Cooran locals who helped a Cooroy business owner find his way home. Email your bouquet and brickbats to editorial@cooroyrag.com.au

THE Save the Mary group that campaigned successfully against the nowdefunct Traveston Crossing Dam has added its voice to calls for the federal Environment Minister Tony Burke to step in and examine a sand and gravel extraction proposal for the Mary River near Conondale. Save the Mary River Coordinating Group president, Glenda Pickersgill, said she shared concerns raised by the Conondale Range Committee who have requested the federal minister to call the project in as a controlled action under Environmental Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act. “It’s hard to see how this could be approved given that the federal government is currently working on a Recovery Plan for the threatened species of the Mary River,” Ms Pickersgill said. “We were very happy that Peter Garrett foreshadowed such a plan when he refused to approve the dam, and even happier now that work has started towards it. The sand and gravel application is likely to have impacts on a mapped Wetland Management Area, therefore, under the Sustainable Planning Act, Department of Environmental and Re-

source Management (DERM) is automatically involved as an advice agency,to ensure that the proposed development complies with the Environmental Protection Act. Sunshine Coast Regional Council will have the final say whether this development is approved. Ms Pickersgill said there is no evidence of successful rehabilitation of any of these sand and gravel extraction sites that have been operating in the Mary River floodplains. Once productive farmland, alluvial flats are being left as ugly, unstable deep pits that will add more sediment into the river during floods or even change the course of the river. In addition, recent floods have shown inaccuracies in the hydrological modelling that DERM are relying on for assessment. There is considerable riparian vegetation damage already occurring downstream of the proposed site following the floods a few months back.” “It would be unthinkable that Sunshine Coast Regional Council could take the huge risk and approve this controversial sand extraction operation on the eve of a threatened species recovery plan.”

A Taste of Reality WHAT happens when you put a journalist, historian, environmentalist and human rights investigator in the same room with an audience? Reality happens, that ’s what. Those with a passion for reading and writing, and an interest in what’s going on out there in the real world, should make sure their calendar is free from Friday 22 – Sunday 24 July. This is the weekend of Reality Writes which is held in the alternate years to the Reality Bites Festival. It has become known for its stimulating and provocative programming, and the quality of its speakers. Commitment is the theme for 2011 and the invited authors will demonstrate their com-

news Bottom of the Business Cycle Fiona Hutchings, Branch Manager, Bendigo Community Bank, Cooroy

THERE is nothing new about business cycles. Yet the change in the cycle always seems to come as a surprise to many. The downturn often arrives in dramatic fashion. So what you should do? The first thing to understand at the bottom of the cycle is that it is a temporary condition. Too often people tend to plot a current trend line into the future trajectory. If things have been going up, they will continue to go up. If things have been going down, they will continue to go down. This is like driving forward while looking in the rear-view-mirror – and not surprisingly it can lead to some spectacular crashes. It is perhaps best to treat the business cycle like the changing seasons. Make hay while the sun shines and put some tasks aside for raining days. More importantly, you need to be preparing for the seasons ahead before they arrive. Just as it might be hard to remember in the depths of winter that

summer is just six months away, so too at the bottom of the business cycle, a buoyant economy is also not too far away. But how does this translate into your business? A few of the more seasonal industries are tourism, retail and agriculture. As we are all aware, tourism destinations generally have peak, normal and off-peak seasons. During the peak season the rates are higher and the focus is on finding ways to maximise the demand. During the off-peak season focus turns to maintenance, renovations and business improvements, as rates are lowered to increase volumes. So what do you do in a down-turn? Treat it as an extreme off-season, particularly in relation to business improvements. It is an excellent time to shop around for business acquisitions and to make major changes to internal business systems and processes. Businesses often look to cut costs in a down-

turn, something that just makes it harder to gear up for the inevitable recovery. Wellington’s Way

Ask your councillor

With member for Nicklin Peter Wellington DISCUSSIONS continue on Powerlink proposal: This week in Parliament I look forward to leading a delegation of representatives from the PAGE group and Noosa Biosphere Ltd to meet with State Government staff from the Department of Energy and Water Utilities. Our delegates will continue to present the case of why the current proposed Powerlink Corridor is not suitable for this area, and provide additional information to government staff regarding the alternative corridor which would run alongside part of the national highway. I am involved in another meeting with Sunshine Coast Regional Council, Main Roads staff and PAGE representatives to also further discuss issues related to the proposed Powerlink corridor and PAGE’s alternative corridor down the highway. Wine and Cheese a winner: Jenny and I visited the wine and cheese festival at Kenilworth over Easter, and what a success this event was for Kenilworth. Congratulations to all the people involved in organising committee and all the members of our community who helped make is such a success. I look forward to the next one. The whole town was abuzz - there is no doubt that the committee has found a good recipe at this time and place on the events calendar. Meet me in Cooroy: I will be holding my next Cooroy meeting in the Cooroy RSL boardroom on Thursday, June 2, from 10am. Anyone who would like to meet with me can organise an appointment by contacting my Nambour office on 54416933.

Community members to join board THE Cooroy Lower Mill Board is calling for expressions of interest from community members who would like to join the board. The Board was formed in 2004 by the community and council to plan and develop the lower mill site. The board’s vision statement is to develop and sustain facilities on the Cooroy lower mill site for present and future generations of the community with balanced consideration to history, culture, education, arts, and economics. In 2006 a master plan was developed and accepted by council. In 2010 the historical and refurbished boiler and kilns were opened. And in May 2010 we had the opening of the Cooroy Library. There are still projects to be completed as per the master plan. The board is looking for community representatives with enthusiasm for the projects and the skills and experience to contribute to the ongoing work of the board. This is a volunteer position. The Board meets on a monthly basis If you have an interest in holding a position please forward your CV to Chairperson Carol Christensen e-mail googoo@one.net.au Postal address P.O Box 13 Cooroy 4563. COULD you tell me what’s happening with the footy/soccer field that was constructed on the Cooroy Car Club’s grounds in Mary River Road. There was a lot of money poured into the project with its construction, turf etc (even the construction of a concrete walkway from the sporting fields) but to my knowledge it has never been utilised and is now looking like a derelict piece of land that has been neglected and has become overgrown. AH, ‘the best laid plans of mice and men’, ... and councils, when the weather calls! The upgrade of the field was a result of the pressure being put on the Cooroy Sports Complex due to the large membership numbers in the rugby league and soccer clubs. The Combined Coastal Car Club were very generous in agreeing to share their land for the use of these clubs and council agreed to upgrade the field for this purpose. We started work in November but then the wet weather hit and projects such as this one and the Butler Street link, faced up to 2.7 meters of rain and it has since delayed any final handover due to the work not yet being completed. Among the things still do be done are the installation of bollards to separate a designated car park from the sports areas, to ensure safety of chil-

dren using them - but also to keep required actual field maintenance down to a minimum, because user groups will be primarily responsible for maintenance and we want to keep their costs down as low as possible. A meeting is being held on Monday to finalise the scope of the works and it is expected the bollards will go in next week. Work on the fields themselves is scheduled for the first week in June again, weather permitting - and hopefully completed by the end of June. Final remediation and preparation of the fields (including weed control, top dressing and preliminary maintenance) will take approximately four to six weeks before the handover can be made. It has been regrettable that the sporting field could not be used this season, but safety has always been at the top of the list. Div 12 Cr Lew Brennan

FOR around two years, the good burghers of Kenilworth have stoically put up with their town clock being correct only twice every 24 hours. But the days of saying “meet you at five-to-nine or so” in the main street – given that was the only time available on the clock – are now thankfully over, thanks to Kenilworth Chamber of Commerce and local councillor Paul Tatton. Immediate past chamber president Michael Pfeiffer said the town clock was bought out of the $300 for Kenilworth’s – and Queensland’s – first Tidy Towns win, in 1973. But the power supply to the clock was, well, untimely at times. “Over the past five to six years, the clock’s timekeeping became a bit dubious,” Mr Pfeiffer said. “At some stages, you could pick which side you wanted to read – either that would make you early, late or on time depending on whether you read the north or south face of the clock.” Then when Energex upgraded the local distribution lines, power to the clock went off altogether. But times change in Kenilworth – and the chamber of commerce took it upon itself to see whether the clock could be moved or re-connected. “Finally, after several attempts, Kenilworth now has an operating town clock which shows the same time on both sides, is more or less accurate, and more importantly costs nothing to run as it is solar-powered,” Mr Pfeiffer said. “The chamber would like to acknowledge the efforts that Cr Paul Tatton made, to see that the town clock was refurbished and that Kenilworth no longer had to face being permanently stuck at 8.55am or pm.”

Social Media: Business Class

21 st Century communications and marketing is rapidly changing – and believe it or not, Facebook is playing a major role. Now let me explain that, provided you follow a few guidelines, the world of social media can have a very positive part to play in your day to day life and even help to grow your ‘bricks and mortar’ business. Yes – Facebook is

more than a social gathering place to chat about fishing and footy; it is a place for dialogue, for connecting, keeping in touch, spreading news and views; announcing events and sharing information. With over 600 million users, of which 8 million are in Australia, Facebook and other social media are profoundly and fundamentally changing the way people and businesses purchase products. And why is that? Because social media has become a platform not only for personal relationships but also for expressing preferences. This is called ‘social proof’ ie testimonials on a great shoe shop or an amazing restaurant. Statistically now, more people are shopping based on the powerful opinions of their friends and their contacts that they know

through Facebook, Twitter and other social media. Anyone who has an offline business knows the impact of word-ofmouth advertising and when the average person using Facebook is influencing 130 friends, both positive and negative opinion can travel very fast! And it all comes down to one little icon that Facebook introduced called the ‘Like’ button. That one button can spread the word ‘virally’, along with Comments that contain links. So, imagine for a moment, that if you have 130 friends on a personal Facebook profile, and each of them knows 130, the potential is massive for promoting your business. And that is just the beginning of Facebook’s influence. Contact: Jeanette Rachinger 0418 824 079.

TRIVIA IT was the accepted practice in Babylon 4000 years ago that for a month after the wedding, the bride’s father would supply his son-in-law with all the mead he could drink. Mead is a honey beer and because their calendar was lunar based, this period was called the honey month, which we know today as the honeymoon.

CLEANER, greener and better protected from future floods. That’s the blueprint for Doonan Bridge Road East via Sunshine Coast Council’s project to revamp the Verrierdale stretch of road. Division 9 Councillor Vivien Griffin said council would soon undertake works to widen and seal a section of Doonan Bridge Road East, with a project cost of $608,729. “These works will target the central section of Doonan Bridge Road East that is worst affected by local flooding,” she said. “Sealing of this road was a high priority identified by the Yandina Creek Progress Association, so it is great we can deliver on their request. During construction of the works, council will be required to undertake some clearing to allow widening of the existing road and then bitumen sealing of the gravel surface.” Cr Griffin said a key objective of the project would be limiting the impact on the local environment. “Where it is necessary to remove trees for the works, this will be done on the southern side of the existing road in order to avoid degredation to the adjacent wetlands area that is immediately to the north of the road,” she said. “A vegetation rehabilitation offset plan has also been established by council to ensure that all vegetation cleared for road works will be replaced with an equivalent area of vegetation adjacent to the work site. Council will also remove illegally dumped rubbish from the nearby wetlands and perform a weed removal program. All of this will ensure that the habitat surrounding the revamped road is actually improved as a result of the project.” All vegetation clearing permits for the Doonan Bridge Road East project have been approved by the Department of Environment and Resource Management. Vegetation clearing is expected to be performed in the coming days. The project is due for completion within 10 weeks (weather permitting).

GRETA Warner was born on September 3, 1914, to Thomas and Emma Dinsey. She lost her mother when she was four years old and was sent to live with an aunt, who lived at Bexley in Sydney, until her father remarried four years later. Greta returned to the farm at Cooroy Mountain when she nine years old. Her step-mother took ill and passed away when she was 17 and she stayed on the farm to help her father. She also helped raise the two boys from the second marriage, until she married Don Warner on December 18, 1937. They had six children (three boys and three girls). Don left his work at the Cooroy Butter Factory, to move to a farm at Eumundi, later coming back to run the Cooroy Mountain farm, as Greta’s father was ill. Rob Dinsey took over when he came back from the Air Force, it was then that they bought ‘Four Winds’, where Great remained until last year when, because of health problems went into a nursing home. As the family grew older, Greta helped in many local organisations including the Kindergarten, both the state primary school and the Noosa District SHS P&C committees, the cycling club, Cooroy tennis club (where she was secretary for 30 years), RSL women’s Auxiliary, CWA both branch and

division and church functions, all the whole helping Don on the farm. Greta was always very proud of her family, her 16 grand children and 24 great grand children. Don passed away on November 11, 1989 and Great kept the farm going with help from the family. She developed problems with her legs, which she regarded as only a minor set back. Her 85th birthday celebration was held beside an old hoop pine, of the same age as Greta. It was planted by her father when she was born. Greta’s interests were her cattle, playing cards with friends at Tinbeerwah Hall, the bowls club and since the 1960s, she ran Hoi at the Cooroy Memorial Hall to raise funds to help with the maintenance of the hall. Greta had many true friends spread over a vast area and she was always happy to do whatever her health would allow her to do. In 1999 she was selected as the most Outstanding Senior Citizen in the electorate of Fairfax and went to Canberra to receive the award from the then Minister for the Aged, the Honourable Bronwyn Bishop. In the year 2000 she was awarded the Australia Day Citizen of the Year for Noosa Shire and in 2011, was awarded the Order of Australia (OAM) for her 60 years of community work. The family would like to thank everyone for their sympathy and support.

Is your dog trying to tell you something?

ARTHRITIS is a very common condition affecting one in five adult dogs. It begins when the cartilage within the joints is worn away and the synovial fluid that lubricates the joints becomes thin and watery. (A bit like old oil in a car). This creates friction and pain when your dog moves. Dogs being stoic creatures tend to put up with the discomfort this causes with very little complaining (unlike us !). So if your dog wont tell you that they are in pain how do you know? Does your dog have any of the following signs: Slow to get up (especially in the morning or after sleeping); Stiffness in the legs; lagging behind on walks; Difficulty climbing stairs or jumping into the car; Reduced activity (not as keen to chase balls). If the answer is yes to any of the above there is a high chance that your dog may be suffering from the effects of arthritis. The key

is not to just assume it’s “old age”, or that nothing can be done. Arthritis care has advanced a lot in the last few years and excellent treatments are now available. There are several steps to consider to ensure improvement. 1. Veterinary examination - to make sure arthritis is the correct diagnosis (other conditions may mimic signs) 2. Diet - Weight control - achieving target weight: Firstly it is very important to achieve the correct body shape / weight…for all breeds of dogs we should be able to easily feel the ribs (much like the ribs on a sink). If your dog is overweight this can be easily corrected by feeding a special reduction Diet called Hills R/D as the sole source of food. This diet is high in fibre yet low in calories so your dog still has that “full” feeling. It contains human grade ingredients and is of excellent quality providing completely balanced nutrition (whats more this is usually cheaper on a daily basis than most commercial diets). (For a 20 kg dog appprox $2 per day). Once target body shape has been achieved is the time to begin feeding a special arthritis prescription diet. This diet is called Hills J/D and has a 6:1 ratio of omega 3 to omega 6. This exact ratio causes the gene causing the production of damaging enzyme in the joints to be switched off thereby reducing inflammation and pain in the joints. Many dogs receiving this alone have dramatic improvements in arthritis signs. 3. Medication: Antiinflammatories - decrease inflammation in the joint therefore decreasing pain (similar to Voltaren in humans). Taken on a daily basis these can dramatically improve your animals quality of life. Cartrophen injection course (4 injections 1 week apart then a booster every 3 months - these cause an increase in production of the lubricating fluid in the joints, making the

joints function better with less pain). Almost all owners notice a massive difference with this treatment. 4. Exercise (gentle but regular low impact exercise /swimming and small short walks (length determined by your vet) 5. Bedding - soft bedding at an easily accessible height and keeping your dog warm can also greatly enhance quality of life . At Sunshine Coast Vets Buzz, Brooke, Brooke and Selina are more than happy to offer advice and help in any way we can to keep your pet happier for longer! Phone 5485 0088.

aspects of learning within the community. The students were coresearchers for developing a heritage trail at the site and came up with the idea of putting a ghost in the boiler house that has already been installed. In china, students are discouraged from thinking creatively with educational policy stating, “don’t let the children’s minds run

wild”. The Cooroy Lower Mill project is in direct opposition to this with students encouraged to be creative in their designs for the site. Chinese teachers and academics were fascinated by this innovative approach to teaching and learning and were especially interested and astounded by the beauty of Cooroy. The project is part of the Australian Research Council linkage grant between Noosa District State High School, Sunshine Coast Regional Council and QUT. Three year 11 students and staff attended a presentation and lunch on Thursday 12th May in recognition of the work they have completed. Ruth thanked the students and presented gifts from BNU to the school in recognition of the relationship between the university and the school and also to the students. It is anticipated that the students from Noosa High will continue to learn about their local community by connecting with the Lower Mill

site and all it has to offer education. The library is also a valuable recourse to the school and the community, with library staff always willing and able to connect students with information.

Making a difference and having fun EARLIER this month two local ladies headed to the jungles of North Sumatra, Indonesia, to ride elephants and see the semi-wild orangutans while exploring the areas on the edge of the fragile Gunung Leuser National Park (GLNP). Inspired by an earlier visit to the area in February, Julie Spencer of Federal, encouraged her good friend Vanessa Bugg (from Tuchekoi) to accompany her and a Sunshine Coast couple, to a little known paradise nestled along the Buluh River. Julie, an Australian Zoo volunteer who loves tigers, was first drawn to Sumatra to see for herself the forest destruction and loss of habitat that has led to the demise of the Sumatran Tigers, with just only 300-400 left in the wild. “The natural beauty of the area is breathtaking. Crystal clear running rivers, dense tropical rainforest, waterfalls, hot springs and of course seeing monkeys swinging from the trees above you, whilst you gently tube down the river, is just awesome said Julie. Vanessa said her highlight was the elephant trek through the jungle. “Riding on the backs of these huge surefooted animals as they carefully track their

way through the steep areas of the rainforest, is an incredibly empowering experience.â€? “Everyone we met, all the guides and locals, were so friendly and truly happy to show tourists their beautiful environment,â€? explained Julie. “A big part of the experience is staying by the river in bamboo bungalows and mixing with the locals over delicious cafĂŠ meals and fun sing-a-longs well into the night.â€? People who live around the National Park survive on just a few dollars a day. Ecotourism is vitally important to the area as it contributes to conservation of the jungle and its wildlife, as well as the development of local communities. It creates sustainable livelihoods for local people so they are not reliant upon illegal activities such as logging inside the national park or hunting wildlife for meat or the pet trade. Julie and Vanessa and their group were invited into the home of the elder of the local village and through their guide, learnt about life for the people of the area and the different jungle medicines they used to treat illnesses. “These were true jungle people who lived entirely on the land and the river and were very happy

and in harmony with nature Vanessa said. A visit to the local village school was another humbling experience for the group. “We met with teachers and over 200 students who were excited about our gifts of soccer balls, colouring pencils and books. Thanks to a generation donation by a local Cooroy lady, we were also able to present the staff with a much wanted CD player, speakers and microphone that they required to conduct morning exercises and dance with the children. The school was a happy and nurturing environment but like most of Sumatra, their resources are extremely limited. It felt great to be able to give to the school community and see the elation and appreciation on their faces said Julie. The trip did have one sobering time when the group rode motorbikes for two hours, to Bukit Lawang to see the orangutans. “We rode through vast hectares of destroyed forests, bulldozed and burnt, to make way for palm oil plantations. This and existing palm oil plantations dominated the landscape. We could only imagine how amazingly diverse and pristine this huge area once was. All of the ‘war zone like’ areas we travelled through had once been

Julie Spencer hitches a ride home to the now critically endangered Sumatran Orangutans and many other wonderful wildlife species. Julie and Vanessa believe that Australians can do much more to help save the forests of Sumatra from further destruction. “We innately appreciate the value of rainforests to our wildlife, our ecology and our economy they said. The experience has touched the hearts of these two friends and they have set up a fund in association with Rainforest Rescue in Aus-

tralia, who support rainforest restoration in the area around the GLNP. Donations to help the replanting of rainforest and wildlife habitat can be made online at http:/ /www.everydayhero. com.au/living_jungles Julie and Vanessa are now planning another trip to North Sumatra. Jungle Julie as she is now known, said “I intend going back many more times and look forward to sharing this piece of paradise with others who want to make a difference whilst having an experience of a lifetime!

INVITATION Armed Robbery Awareness PRESENTATION The Queensland Police Service extends an offer for all Cooroy and Noosa Hinterland businesses to attend this 70 minute presentation. Venue: The Cooroy Hotel Date: Monday 6 June, 2011 Time: 5:30pm – 6:40pm (arrive 5:20pm for 5:30pm start) Sunshine Coast District Crime Prevention Unit and Cooroy Police R.S.V.P. by Friday 3rd June 2011 COB to Officer in Charge Police Station COOROY on 54425030 Please provide business name and contact details and number of staff attending. Mal SCOTT Sgt 5485 Officer in Charge Police Station COOROY

THE current upwards trend of violent armed robbery offences occurring on the Gold Coast is a real concern not only for business owners on the Gold Coast but also for business owners on the Sunshine Coast. Crime trends can sometimes be replicated between regions especially with such a huge media coverage and with limited police success in locating and charging the offenders. It is for this reason that I believe it is timely for all Cooroy businesses to have a look at their security in regards their vulnerability to armed robberies. Businesses that trade after normal trading hours and those with a reasonably high cash turnover are most at risk for these types of offences. I am currently endeavouring to organise some strategies to minimise the risk to local businesses. One such strategy will be organising a police presentation provided by our Crime Prevention Unit from Maroochydore where ways to minimise the risk of armed robbery can be addressed. I will be personally contacting high risk business owners to discuss this issue but the presentation will be open to all concerned members of our business community. I will advise further of the date and time for the presentation. The issue of kids on skateboards riding along public roads is also causing many Cooroy citizens concern. The intersection of Miva and Diamond streets has become a gathering point for local youths who have been riding down hill at speed

along Diamond street and crossing the intersection of Kauri Street without concern for their own safety or that of oncoming vehicles. I have been contacted by concerned drivers and residents advising of some near misses so the kids have been directed to stop this practise and find an area which does not pose such a significant risk to the riders’ health. The instance of cars hooning has continued to be addressed by police with the help of the community with several young P Plate drivers located and charged with drink driving and dangerous driving after phone calls to the police station. Please continue to phone in and report bad driving behaviour so the attitude of these drivers can be hopefully modified by court appearances and the loss of license. These young drivers learn the hard way that the right to drive on our roads is a privilege and not a right and that the privilege to drive on our roads can be withdrawn at anytime. The behaviour of the core group of teenagers hanging around Apex park and the Cooroy CBD is gradu-

ally on the improve but is far from being a problem of the past. Please keep reporting this behaviour so we don’t lose ground and slip back to where we were 6 months ago. Burglary and break and enter offences have ceased which is a credit to the community for banding together to discourage this behaviour. The Cooroy Blue Light Disco continues to provide a great service to local kids with 150 plus kids enjoying a great night out last Saturday night. Thanks again to the Cooroy Rotary Club who provide the majority of volunteer help at the discos as well as our local helpers who show up to every disco without fail. Every one of these helpers are all very busy people and the saying of ‘if you want something done, ask a busy person’ is very true in this instance. Speed enforcement is being stepped up on Tinbeerwah Hill on the Cooroy Noosa Road as it is apparent that a good percentage of drivers are not sticking to the 80km/ h speed zone. Police do not enjoy issuing speeding fines so if you don’t want a fine then don’t speed.

New Rock Band School for all ages opens on the Coast

Pictured from left: Rory Quinlan, owner of the Advanced Recording Studios, Joel Rademaker, Rock Band School Musical Director, and Charles Lloyd, musician seeking a band, and general Rock Band School Goffa A NEW rock band school in Noosa is giving musicians of all ages and playing ability a chance to try out in different bands, then, practice, record and perform. The Music Director of Rock Band School Noosa, Joel Rademaker, known along the coast as an accomplished musician, and a great music teacher, will guide the sessions, matching musicians with the right band for them to excel. All instruments and voices are welcome, including classical instruments. “Most bands are formed at random, with odd matches of musicians. That’s often their downfall. This way musicians get to try out with different band

members until they find the right match,” said Joel. The sessions are held at the acclaimed Advanced Recording Studio in Noosa, where professional bands record their music. “You need to be able to play at least three covers reasonably well, but you might also be an experienced rock band member who wants to play with a new band or find new band members,” he said. Joel said that once bands have formed and practiced, they will be able to professionally record their music and in future the school will organise performance opportunities as well. Contact annadaysnews@gmail.com or 07 5485 3635 to book a session.

FRIDAY 13 is considered unlucky by some – but not by the Pomona & District Community House. Friday May 13th was the grand opening of the long-awaited new ‘Lawson Shed’ facility. Officially opened by Mayor Bob Abbot, the Lawson Shed is named in honour of Brian Lawson, Honorary Project Manager and overseer of the shed project who was both shocked and over the moon to have the shed named after him. Brian said, “It has taken years of dreaming and scheming, numerous re-designs and many setbacks to finally bring the shed to completion.” With $129,000 from the Sunshine Coast Regional Council,

$20,000 from the State Government, Dept. Of Communities and hours of volunteer labour from local tradies and donated goods from both local and national businesses, Brian says that the shed represents a truly wonderful community effort. “There is no way we could have had a building as fantastic as this one without the incredible contribution from locals.” The Lawson Shed will be the new venue for the Community Kitchen, the Dabble and Paint Self Esteem workshop, youth programs, counselling services and much, much more. The venue is also available for hire. For details please contact 54852427.

news Community Bank branches open 10,000th account

COOROY RAG

POMONA resident Mannie Vassallo will go down in Community Bank history as the 10,000th customer to open an account at one of Cooroy, Marcoola or Tewantin Community Bank Branches. It was simply a case of recently calling into the branch and opening an account for Mannie Vassallo, a well known local who owns Mannie ’s Pizza and Pasta at Pomona. However, the opening of his account was a much more significant event for staff and directors of the local community board. “We knew we were getting close to opening our 10,000th account,” Cooroy Community Bank branch manager, Fiona Hutchings said. “These milestones are really important for our staff, and our company, because they signify that we are moving in the right direction and that we are continuing to grow the business. It also indicates that the people of

Cooroy, Marcoola and Tewantin continue to have faith in our customer service and the products and services that we offer,” Ms. Hutchings said. The branches have collectively donated more than $455,000 to a variety of community groups, organisations and schools since the branches reached profit in 2008. Not bad for three Community Bank branches that only opened their doors with the opening of the Cooroy branch in 2002. As for Mannie, he just loves the idea of belonging to a bank that does so much for the community. “It ’s just great to know that where I bank plays such an important part in our region’s future. It ’s amazing how much time and money the branches have already invested in our communities for all our benefit and I encourage locals to get behind their Community Bank. By doing that it helps build a stronger future for all of us ,” Mr.Vassallo said.

THE film billed as “the Foremost Western Thriller of the Greatest Western Star” is the attraction at the Fork ’n’ Film night in Pomona’s Majestic Theatre on Thursday, May 26. The film is The Great K & A Train Robbery and the star is the renowned Tom Mix, although his horse Tony, who plays Tony the Wonder Horse, comes a close second in the cast list. The silent Western was described by Variety magazine on its release in 1926 as “probably the fastest picture

in action ever filmed.” Another commentator noted that ”the movie runs a full 18 minutes before the action slows down enough for the viewer to take a breath.” Tom Mix (born Thomas Hezikiah Mix in 1880) made at least 336 films between 1910 and 1935. All but nine were silent features. He was Hollywood’s first Western megastar - the “King of Cowboys” when Ronald Reagan and John Wayne were youngsters. Wayne actually worked as a property assistant on The Great K and A Train Robbery and appeared as an extra. The film is based upon the foiling of a train robbery by Dick Gordon as related by author Paul Leicester Ford in a magazine serial first published in 1896. It is notable for its use of breathtaking locations around Glenwood Springs, Colorado, where local residents gathered every day for three weeks to watch Mix and Tony per-

Pomona’s Majestic Theatre, built in 1921, is the world’s only silent movie theatre still being used for its original purpose, with the 1920s experience enhanced by live pipe organ accompaniment. The theatre is owned and operated by the volunteers of Pomona Progress Art Tourism Inc and also presents selected “talkies” and live performances. Silent matinee shows are presented on Tuesdays at 10.30am and Saturdays at 11am, while Thursdays are Fork ‘n’ Film nights with the cafe opening at 6pm and the film starting at 7.30. National charity makes its home in the Sunshine Coast I GIVE A Buck Foundation of Australia Ltd has relocated its head office from Melbourne to the beautiful hinterland area of Belli Park and hopes to bring hope and relief to some very special families right throughout QLD. I Give A Buck! is a children ’s charity that assists families who are caring for terminally ill or seriously disabled children at home. The organisation aims to set the standard for the way Australian children ’s charities operate financially with some key points of differentiation: Bar Blashki, the charity ’s Founder, says “We really work hard at reducing our overheads, or administration costs, by: . using suppliers who provide their products or services to us free of charge . operating from a series of home offices rather than paying for office space . partnering with businesses that will ‘sponsor ’our remaining, unavoidable, overheads (like insurances and telephone bills etc.) That means that we are able to guarantee donors that 100% of a donation made to any appeal goes straight to that appeal – and therefore to the child concerned. We run individual appeals for each child that we help. Each appeal raises a specific amount of money to pay for a specific product or serv-

ice that will relieve the suffering of a specific child. That way, every donor knows exactly how their donation was spent and how they helped to change the life of a real child. For every single appeal we try to harness the power of the local community to allow them to make a real difference in the lives of the severely disadvantaged children within their local communities. We actively enlist the support of the child ’s local schools, media and PharmaSave pharmacy. We ask donors for just $1 – a buck – using a little from many to change kids ’ lives. In essence, we tell the story and the community does the rest.” I Give A Buck is currently looking for volunteers to help in the office at Belli Park and would love to hear from anyone who would like to help out on a regular basis – hours to suit. It ’s also looking to make contact with families who may need assistance in caring for their children who have life-threatening or life altering conditions. If you need assistance, send an email to hq@igiveabuck.org.au or call Liat Harrower, Relationships Manager, on 0423 817 407. Visit www.igiveabuck.org.au to find out more about the wonderful work the foundation does.

Psychic, Heather Paterson HEATHER Paterson is unexpectedly building a community on the Sunshine Coast that is literally out of this world. A psychic and clairvoyant, Heather says the popularity of the psychic sessions has exceeded her expectations. “Through word of mouth it is quite amazing how many hundreds of people have found me. It has evolved into something very special,” Heather, a mother of two, said. After repeated requests, Heather has started a group meditation and psychic reading session every Thursday evening from 6.30pm at Cooroy library. In the Cooroy library meditation session she is able to communicate and receive accurate messages from the group members’ deceased relatives and friends. “Once the meditation is over I share with everyone what I have seen for each person,” she said. “It’s lovely to be part of this group and to share in the healing that happens for many people.” Born in Scotland, Heather says she is grateful to have been given such a gift that she shared with her mother and grandfather. “I did a reading with one man and we were able to connect with his girlfriend of about 20 years ago who had died in a car accident when they were together,” Heather said. “They didn’t get to say goodbye, so he was able to say goodbye and get closure after all those years.” To book a psychic reading or enquire about the Cooroy meditation/psychic reading, contact Heather on 0420 024 194 or (07) 5471 0172. health 3-D Vision Syndrome LOCAL optometrists offer relief for those having trouble with seeing in 3D. Do you or your child experience any or even all of the following symptoms when watching 3-D movies or television: headaches, nausea, dizziness, motion sickness, double vision, blurred vision, eye strain. 3D technology is becoming increasingly popular at the cinema and now even in our homes with the take up of 3-D televisions and gaming. But unfortunately, not everyone is able to enjoy the effects of 3D images due to various eye and vision problems. Cooroy optometrists Jenny Currie and Heather McLeod remind us that our eyes need to be “3-D ready” to be able to fully enjoy 3-D entertainment technology of movies, television and games. Research has shown that up to 56% of those 18 to 38 years of age have one or more problems with binocular vision and therefore may have difficulty seeing 3-D. In addition, about five percent of the population have amblyopia (lazy eye) and/or strabismus (eye turn) which makes 3-D viewing virtually impossible. Jenny says that “There are also some binocular vision problems that are only intermittent so that you might only see 3-D some of the time or be-

come nauseous or dizzy. This could make viewing 3-D movies or games a less than satisfactory experience.” But there is hope. Thanks to optometric vision therapy, thousands of people across the world who previously would not have been able to see 3-D are enjoying every special effect that 3-D technology offers. “It is amazing to see people’s faces as they suddenly start seeing their world in 3-D after having been stereo blind,” says Heather who, along with Jenny, has been providing optometric vision therapy on the Sunshine Coast for more than 15 years. “Most people take vision for granted and don’t realize how different their lives would be without 3-D vision, and I am not just talking about watching 3-D movies. I would like to encourage anyone who has trouble seeing 3-D to find out more about how you too can become 3-D ready.” If you or a family member have trouble viewing 3-D, you can find out more about optometric vision therapy visit www.optometryatcooroy. com.au or go to the College of Behavioural Optometry website www.acbo.org.au optometry@cooroy is at 62 Maple Street, Cooroy. Please phone 5442 5555 for an appointment.

Want to lose weight - maybe it’s time to “Shake-It”! WITH almost 60% of Australia’s adult population overweight or obese, the need for a healthy and sustainable weight loss program has never been more important. Apart from the emotional and cosmetic toll of being overweight, there is a greater risk of many diseases and physical ailments. From a physiotherapy perspective, people who are overweight place greater strain on their joints and muscles as well as increased loads on their spines. Combine these factors with reduced activity and it is obvious why we see the need for weight loss as essential to the holistic management of many musculoskeletal problems seen by physiotherapists. Successful weight loss requires a tailored professional weight management program that addresses the different reasons for weight gain and obstacles to weight loss. “Shake-It” is a professional (practitioner only) weight management program that focuses on fat loss rather than weight loss. Because there is a large educational component to the program, you should expect not only to lose fat but to keep it off. People who have tried

various weight loss programs with poor results or rebound weight gain have probably lost muscle mass and reduced their metabolic rate. Adequate muscle mass actually promotes a good metabolism which assists in keeping the fat off long term. The “Shake-It” program allows you to lose fat, whilst preserving muscle mass. “Our qualified practitioners provide the support and advice you require while on the “Shake It” program. We will help you uncover the reasons for your weight gain and support you to overcome any obstacles you may come across. On the “Shake It” program, you will be advised of the best supplements for you as well as diet and lifestyle advice tailored to your needs. Best of all, “Shake It” has been approved for health rebates by a number of private health insurers. Please contact us to find out if your health fund is included. So if you’re ready to take the first step to good health and begin your weight loss journey or simply would like more information, contact Craig or Rebecca at Hinteractive Physio on 5442 5556.

THIS new ground breaking technology will eliminate your worries regarding your body image. The team at Medical Body Contouring presents the Med Contour, a new technology with proven results in Europe now available in Noosa. A non surgical, pain free, medical technology using ultrasound therapy for the treatment of fat and cellulite reduction. “Med Contour breaks up fat and tightens the skin to smooth body contours, reduce the appearance of cellulite and remove stubborn fatty deposits that don’t budge, even with diet and exercise. It is a non-invasive therapy. So no down time has to be considered at any time,” said spokesperson, Kate Herrick. “Cellulite has always been a cosmetic plague for women and many medical devices as well as topical treatments have claimed to be effective in keeping the unwanted “orange peel” effect at bay. Med Contour system uses an innovative vacuum technology to raise the adipose (fat) tissue at the treatment site and then focuses the combined action of two low-frequency ultrasounds on the target area. “Medical Body Contouring can successfully treat deep cellulite and localized fat, achieving visible results even after the first treatment. Rapid formation and subsequent collapse of millions of microscopic bubbles (or cavities) into a liquid is a phenomenon known as cavitation. Med Contour’s dual ultrasound technology provides an advanced cavitational system which produces these microbubbles and has an astonishing effect on cellulite and localized fat. Featuring a unique approach to the treat-

ment of cellulite, the Med Contour selective and targeted therapy of the fatty layers and spares the surrounding tissue from the deep penetrating action of the ultrasound, making the non-invasive procedure highly effective and safe. “Med Contour uses a 1 MHz dual ultrasound generator which can be modulated between 20 and 60 kHz. A frequency of 1 MHz is certainly safe and non-damaging, has long been used to treat muscular trauma and is widely studied. “This is the first technology that has a system that deals with ‘how’ the fat is eradicated from the body. Others talk about getting rid of unwanted fat but where does it go? No other technology works on getting rid of the ‘freed’ fat. “Med Contour deals with that. It has a second hand piece which opens the lymph nodes and massages the lymphatic system so the fluids that come free are disposed of by the body’s natural system. “Have You Got the Desire to Fit Back Into These Challenging Jeans? Med Contour can give you back your pride so you can walk on the beach with new found confidence, show of your body, getting rid of that sarong when walking hand in hand with your other half. You can visit us at our website and register for your gift voucher, drop in on our Face Book page or write us an email if you have any questions.” Call now to book your free consultation and half price first treatment. Pomona Demons AFL RD 3 was played at Maroochydore in windy conditions. The Demons got away to a good start leading 36 to 0 at 1/4 time. After 1/4 time the game evened out a little, but Pomona ran away winners by 59 points. Lanze Magin continued his outstanding start to the season with another best on ground performance. He was supported in the middle by the Maxfield brothers who provided plenty of run. Up forward, Peter Larkin played his role superbly, supporting Kyle Brown as they kicked 7 goals between them. Final Scores 12.22.94 to 5.5.35 Rd 4 was a close one between Noosa and Pomona. Pomona held on to win

by 2 pts in our closest game of the season. Gymnastics: Mens Junior Regional Championships

THE Brisbane Boys College Gymnastics venue proved to be a successful competitive arena for the boys from the Cooroy Gymnastics Club. Coach Tony Sutton travelled to BBC on mothers day with five of Cooroy’s brightest young competitors to contest the Sunshine Coast Regional Championships. All boys contested the six individual disciplines and for all round awards. The gymnasts have been training hard to compete well at the regionals to qualify for the Queensland State Championships which are to be held at the Chandler Gymnastics Center at the end of June. Jonah Harrisson finished 1st in the level 3 open competition also winning gold on floor, pommel horse and vault and bronze on high bar and rings. In the level 3 under competition Finlay Jones finished 2nd overall with gold on floor and vault and silver on rings and high bar, and Edison Manuel won gold in the high bar event. The level 4 open boys Ned Baker and Christian Vassillo also competed well, with Ned finishing fourth overall with a bronze on floor and Christian finishing 6th overall. If you would like to find out more about men’s gymnastics see the club website www.cooroygymnasticsclub.com.au or contact the club on ph5442 5800.

Noosa Junior Pirates Rugby League THE U7 white team had a tough game against Caboolture on the weekend. Player of the match was Tammin Lange and all kids played excellent. U7 Blue continued their good form and tackled their hearts out against Caboolture. Matthew made some good runs while Harry continued to back up his team with confidence. U7 gold played a double header v Caloundra. The boys showed great spirit to battle away for the 2 games. We love tackling..and it showed. After 2 games the boys had tackled themselves to a stand still. Man of both games was Kade. We think he has Lockyer covered next season for the Broncos. Any scouts could do worse than getting his signature before he turns 8. U8 blue have continued on their improving defensive effort to beat Caboolture 13 tries to 3 with Ryan and Josh bagging three tries each awesome effort all round these

boys r unstoppable. U8 gold with some much improved defence and flair in attack had their best game of the year. Michael made some lovely tackles and Ryan and Sam ran the ball up full of steam. Great effort boys. U9 Gold had a tough away game against some big Caboolture kids. The boys tackled low and hard and ran for the holes. The boys are unloading good passes in tackles now. They all played the game in good spirit and came off with a smile on their faces, well done boys. U10 gold played a well drilled Maroochydore team. Some great defence from all the boys frustrated the opposition and out attack was on fire. Well played boys. Man of Match went to Clyde Whitford. Go pirates! Some dropped ball and bad decisions led to the U11 blue going down to Maroochydore 22-12. Great runs were made by Joel, Mojo and Bopple. Sneaky try to

Will and Josh’s defence was a highlight. Under 11 gold came up against Kawana in a thrilling game with both teams going try for try. In the end it was Kawana’s day, with man the match going to Isaak Mclean. U12gold had another very convincing win against Maroochydore. With some great attack and some brutal defence the opposition were never in the game. Led by Asher Buckman,Glen Jarret,Ali Bakach,Harvey Hope and Brin Lloyd. Great effort by all our giants. U12 Blue took on Caloundra at home in an entertaining game . Noosa came home with 2 great tries to Ashar Buckman and Taon Mulchay but time ran out. Strong efforts from Jonathon Lowth, Blake Gower and Jayden Symes. U13 Blue got up 31-10 over Palmwoods, U13 Gold side beat Caloundra 36-14 and the 14’s went down 20-10 against Gympie Gold. A great team effort over Gympie saw the U16’s back to their best. Final score Noosa 38 Gympie 12.

Satish steps up in style

AFTER a great start to the year Cooroora United Over 35s men’s team have stepped up to the mark, with 18 points from 7 games. Running equal 2nd on the ladder and with a game in hand the season is shaping up to be a memorable one. Coach Matt Mc Nally is striving not only to keep the team fired up but also believes a premiership and grand final are on the cards for this team. Satish Lal, a local businessman from Gelignite Jacks, has given some outstanding performances as striker and McNally invites everyone to witness his brilliance at the next home game; all dates can be found on our website www.cufc.org.au Coach Mc Nally swears by his squad

and says it’s great to work with a bunch of players as focused and as dedicated as this team. “If possible I’d love to keep this squad and build a fortress,” said Mc Nally. “Our Main advantage is that we now run a 12 month programme which includes a 7 aside summer soccer tournament. It will be easier to keep the squad together and stay fit. Within our squad we have 9 players with Grand Final experience and 6 with winner’s medals. The experience is there to draw from and the remainder of our players are hungry.” On any home game Friday night, supporters can witness the remarkable progress of our premier reserve women who

are definitely starting to hit their straps. Led by Coach Graham Mallet and two senior player’s goalkeeper Tina Standish and Left Back Melissa Radke, they will be in action for all to see. Home games Kick off at 6.15pm and the clubhouse opens at 5.15pm. Senior men’s football can be watched on Saturdays at our home games. Reserve men’s kicks off at 4pm and first grade kicks off at 6pm. The television cameras are often present so dress up in club colours and don’t forget to check out all the information on our website at www.cufc.org.au. To match it with the best we need supporters, a blue, red and white army to come and be loud, help us over the line. Cooroora United, its supporters, players and sponsors have a long bright future ahead. To this end we encourage everyone to participate, come along and enjoy a fun filled night and get behind this wonderful community club. Our team mascot is a wombat and our club house is the Den. So come on down to the Den and cheer loud.

Graham Williams 0418 710 222 PH: 5449 1288 - FAX: 5449 1818 grahamjwilliams@hotmail.com

Claire Blaga Darell Morisson Thibaut Zeestraten TWO of the young generation of Cooroy Badminton Club players, Claire Blaga and Thibaut Zeestraten and were selected to take part in the annual June Bevan Competition. This is the yearly Australasian Badminton Championship held in New Zealand or Australia. “To be selected and join the Under 17 team of badminton players who will represent Queensland at such a high level of competition is an achievement in itself” says Darrel Morisson , the President of the Cooroy Badminton Club who handed over a club sponsorship to the two players. So on the 20th of April, a group of 8 Under 17 badminton players from the Sunshine Coast and Brisbane flew to Wellington, New Zealand proudly wearing their Queensland sport uniforms. Each state and territory sends one or more teams to participate in the event. The week long competition consists of two parts, the Team Event, where state and territories teams play against each other, and the Individual Event, where each one of the players 181 this year- play in a knockout tournament with five categories, men’s singles, women’s singles, men’s doubles, women’s doubles and mixed doubles. Two Queensland players won the women’s doubles plate event, another two were runners up in the men’s doubles plate event. As a team, Queensland came second in their group, which is a great achievement.

The entire experience did successfully build our badminton players stamina and skills right from intensive weekly training sessions in Brisbane, to when they landed back home in Australia. “I feel I have improved so much during this time playing my favourite sport and watching others play. I have made great friends and am already preparing for the Brisbane Open taking place later this month” says Claire Blaga. The Coach, Horace Leung, did an excellent job right through the event lining up the strongest combinations of players and insuring everyone won matches. The manager, Nathalie Wharton made sure the competition ran smoothly for the team and did exceptionally well at the difficult job of keeping the eight teenagers well fed and rested. The days consisted mostly of badminton matches and there was little time to do much else. All had a great time. “I know I can look back on this as the best experience of my life” says Thibaut Zeestraten who is already seriously preparing to play in next year’s event. The Cooroy Badminton Club is open to all. It has a particular interest and strength in developing the next generation of top badminton players. We offer three sessions a week with dedicated coaching and lots of opportunities to play at all levels, from beginners to more advanced. For more information call Darell on 5447 6592 or visit www.cooroybadminton.com.au.

IMPACT Boxing Academy’s Jess “Da Bomb” Retallack won Bronze in Darwin last week at the Arafura games. The week long International tournament attracted boxers from 40 different countries. Jess was one of twelve elite boxers in the Queensland team representing Australia. In her first International bout Jess drew the New Zealand 60kg champ Laura Mathews. Both girls boxed superbly as they went toe to toe from the opening bell. Jess found her range early and combined with some brilliant footwork and lightning fast combinations, she soon started to dominate the taller more experienced New Zealander. Jess was crowned the winner with a score of 2811. That win moved her into the semi finals against Meena from India. Meena was entering the semi finals with a TKO win in her previous bout over a girl from PNG. From the opening bell Jess pressed forward in her usual aggressive style putting Meena on the back foot. In a bout that saw more grappling than clean boxing, Jess was growing more frustrated. Going into the final round Meena was in front by two points. In what became a game of cat and mouse the Indian ran instead of boxed to the point the referee stopped her and told her she had to box. Jess tried in vain to make up the difference in the score but was unable. Meena was awarded the win 15-13 thus giving Jess the Bronze medal and denying her a shot at gold. The Queensland team returned home with 2 gold, 3 silver and 3 bronze from twelve boxers. “Jess has done herself proud this week. Some of the best women 60kg boxers in the world are here for the games and Jess has come third out of them. These games have given us a good indication of where Jess is at on an International level. She is definitely up there now and as we continue to prepare her for Olympic Games selection at least we know we are well and truly on track. For the record the Indian girl was disqualified in the Gold medal bout for the same fouls she continued to use when she fought Jess a day earlier. If only we had that referee for Jess’s bout ! But hey, that’s boxing….” Trainer Mark Evans said. The Impact Boxing Team are now preparing for the South East Queensland titles to be held at Beenleigh Tavern on June 11.
