THIS year’s Noosa Council candidates have met with the Cooroy community ahead of the March 16 election.

Four mayoral candidates and 13 councillor candidates had the opportunity to deliver a three-minute presentation to more than 100 people at the Cooroy Memorial Hall last Thursday night.

The Meet the Candidates event was organised and hosted by the Cooroy Cham-

Cooroy Chamber of Commerce president Sirah Robb said they were thrilled with the outcome.

“It was a great opportunity for our community to hear what each candidate stands for, their qualifications for the role and how they intend to make Cooroy and the hinterland a priority on their agenda.”

Major resurfacing project for Cooroy

RESURFACING works on Cooroy’s railway overpass will be carried out following pavement repairs in December that “did not meet community expectations”.

The Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) made the announcement earlier this month following news that local and state governments had joined forces to advocate for a major upgrade of Cooroy’s railway overpass (Cooroy Rag, 7 February 2024).

The Queensland Government will resurface 1.3 kilometres of Cooroy Connection Road (locally known as Myall Street).

The project includes resurfacing works from just south of Ferrells Road to just east of the railway overpass near the Myall and Elm Street intersection.

It includes resurfacing works on the bridge deck at the railway overpass and on both approaches to the bridge.

Pavement rehabilitation works will also be complet-

ed at the Myall and Elm Street intersection.

Minister for Transport and Main Roads Bart Mellish said this work will provide a safer and smoother journey for road users, extend the road life and reduce the costs associated with regular road maintenance.

“Cooroy Connection Road provides an important link to the Bruce Highway for the hinterland town of Cooroy, as well as for other communities towards the coast, such as Tinbeerwah, Tewantin and Noosa, that connect to Cooroy via Cooroy Noosa Road.

“Locals will be aware we recently undertook minor repair works on the approaches to the railway overpass on Cooroy Connection Road, as well as on the bridge deck, as a temporary solution while we finalised preparations for these resurfacing works.

“We would like to thank the Cooroy community and those who use this road regularly for their patience

while we completed these vital preparations.”

Member for Nicklin Rob Skelton said this project will make a real difference for all who travel this critical route through Cooroy.

“I have advocated for this project and have heard the community’s calls for upgrades to the bridge, and for improvements to the intersections of Myall and Elm St, and Diamond and Elm St.

“We want safer, better connections for the people of Cooroy and surrounds; this project is one of many that will do just that.”

Member for Noosa Sandy Bolton said the completed pavement repairs on the Cooroy overpass in December did not meet community expectations, and she provided feedback to TMR and continued advocacy alongside Member for Nicklin Rob Skelton.

“In response, TMR announced a complete resurfacing of a 1.3-kilometre stretch of Cooroy Connec-

tion Road (Myall St) incorporating the railway overpass and both approaches to the bridge.

“This is a positive first step in addressing road issues that the Cooroy community are experiencing, and we welcome the inclusion of pavement rehabilitation works on the Myall and Elm

Street intersection in this project. We thank TMR for committing to these works, and residents for their patience during this time.

"We continue to advocate for TMR

planning and design, as a matter of urgency," Ms Bolton said. With the design for the project completed and tenders for the construction works soon to be called, construction is expected to commence in mid-2024, weather and construction scheduling permitting.

Community drop-in information sessions for dam upgrade

SEQWATER is holding community information sessions on the Lake Macdonald Dam Improvement Project.

The drop-in information sessions, to provide the opportunity for the community to seek further information on the project, are being held on Saturday 2 March from 9:30 am to 12 noon at Pomona Memorial Hall, Reserve Street, Pomona

Seqwater said it will work with the selected contractor to finalise the construction schedule and over the coming months, works will include site set up, survey works, some tree removal and commencement of lake lowering.

The project will involve building a new spillway and reconstructing the existing earth embankments to meet modern engineering and

in 500,000-year flood and ensure the continued reliability of this water source for years to come.

Seqwater has undertaken comprehensive engineering, environmental and economic studies, and considered previous feedback from the community reference group, which has informed the best design and build approach.

MORE than $11,000 has been raised for a young family who lost everything in a house fire on Australia Day.

Cooroy family Chris, Emalie, Rosie and Patrick have had to start from scratch after their home in Lake Macdonald burned to the ground.

Chris’ brother Kenny O’Keeffe said the community support has been

amazing.

“At the moment, they are waiting for the steps to go through.

“With nowhere to live, their neighbours, who are away, heard about the fire and called and invited them to stay in their house. The son came over and gave them a key.

“From day one, people have been rocking up and dropping stuff off or helping

COOROY’S Busstop

Espresso was due to close on 21 February after part of its application to change a development approval for their roadside stall to include a food and drink outlet was refused by council.

But Busstop Espresso owner Rob Noy said Noosa Council has now advised them that it will stay its closure enforcement while council conducts an internal review.

“Busstop Espresso lodged a formal Administrative Action Complaint (AAC) with the council and met with council CEO Larry Sengstock to discuss the matter.

“Soon after, the council’s governance group issued a notice advising of the establishment of a second

level internal review of the anomalies identified in the AAC.”

CEO Larry Sengstock said under the Local Government Act 2009 such a complaint automatically initiates an internal review.

"To clarify, the extension for Busstop Espresso to continue to operate is only temporary while we complete the internal review relating to their formal complaint.

“One lady from over the road packed up her car with stuff for the kids, and people have been bringing over dinner or food for salvage workers.

“Just when you think humanity is gone, it isn’t; it’s not gone.

“Thanks to everyone who has helped so far. It's been so amazing and overwhelmingly heartwarming.”

As well as losing their personal belongings, the family tragically lost two pets in the fire.

“Rosie and Patrick lost their best friends, Bert and Quince, two Maine Coon cats who meant the world to this family.”

A GoFundMe page for the family has raised over $11,000, exceeding the $10,000 goal.

“We are very humbled and can’t thank people enough,” Mr O'Keeffe said.

Mr Noy said there is strong community support for Busstop Espresso.

“Recently, via Councillor Tom Wegener, Busstop Espresso submitted petitions supporting its continued operation with over 3,000 signatures – an extraordinary result and reputedly the largest such

Eumundi Holdings Development director Alex Rigby said under court orders issued on 29 September 2023 and 8 December 2023, all involved parties, excluding Eumundi Holdings, were mandated to declare their stance on the approval of the development application.

“On November 16 last year, Sunshine Coast Council communicated its

support for the approval of the development application, which marked a crucial milestone in the ongoing proceedings.

“However, the landscape shifted on December 15, as both Stockwell and Lewis Formosa formally declared their opposition to the approval of the development application.

“In light of Stockwell’s and Formosa’s resistance to the application, the matter is set to proceed to a contested hearing, with the court tasked to adjudicate and

decide the dispute.

“The next phase of the appeal was scheduled for February 2, which presents another opportunity for resolution. If an agreement is not reached, the court will take further steps to progress the dispute, potentially leading to a full hearing,” Mr Rigby said.

A Sunshine Coast Council spokesperson said because this application is currently in appeal, as per standard business practice, council is unable to provide comment at this stage.

Short stay snapshot

NOOSA Council has unveiled a new online dashboard to help the community monitor the operation and regulation of Noosa’s short-stay local law.

The Short Stay Local Law Snapshot, to be updated quarterly on council’s website, is part of a suite of initiatives that council has introduced since July 2020 to tackle the challenge of controlling the

exponential growth of short stay accommodation.

Noosa was the first council in Queensland to introduce a local law to regulate and manage the ongoing use of short stay letting through a framework, following calls from residents to address the impacts on permanent residents and residential amenity.

‘It’s a privilege and an honour’

NOOSA mayor Clare Stewart has said farewell.

At the last council meeting for the term, Cr Stewart thanked and acknowledged those who have been instrumental over the past four years.

“I leave with gratitude, respect and thanks. But most of all I leave with pride.

Pride for all that we have achieved together.

“I am incredibly proud of what we have completed over four years. Four years that saw the interruption and devastation of Covid-19, a major flooding event, rising costs, logistical nightmares and staff shortages that occurred not just here in Noosa but right across Queensland – and to add to that, the largest ever disaster recovery costs and support required amounting to over $120 million for our shire.

“We have done much. Works have been significant and are ongoing.”

Cr Stewart said there are too many to mention but some highlights include: addressing the housing crisis; council’s new Corporate Plan; record spends on

capital works and infrastructure including four hinterland bridges; continuous engagement with residents; standing with the hinterland community through the initiation and support of legal action against the operators of the Kin Kin Quarry; increasing fire management and mitigation by over 100 per cent; council’s innovative Waste Plan; being the first council in Queensland to introduce short-term local letting laws; and more land under conservation than ever before.

“On a personal note: leading and championing two mayoral balls to raise funds for increased services for domestic violence across our shire; the mayoral Christmas appeals to help our most at-risk families enjoy Christmas; initiating the Resilience Tours with local Paralympians, Olympians and sporting heroes to inspire our students through stories of resilience and hope; forging stronger and closer ties with other councils by joining the South East Queensland Council of Mayors; and council’s Memorandum of

Understanding (MOU) with Gympie Regional Council in regard to waste.

“Thank you to our first CEO Brett de Chastel, Scott Waters, and now Acting CEO Larry Sengstock, for their support, advice, and hard work.

“Thanks to the council executive team who have led us this term, and our wider council team inclusive of all our managers and staff both indoor and outdoor.

“Thanks to deputy mayor Frank and all councillors.

“Jobs like ours take their toll – most significantly on our families – and I want to acknowledge my own. My husband and children have sacrificed much to enable me to do my job.

“Finally, I want to thank the people of Noosa Shire. They took a chance on an unknown and I hope I’ve earned their respect and validated their choice.

“It has been the ultimate privilege to represent you and work for you. Whatever I do and wherever I go, I will always have the incredible honour of being the first female mayor of Noosa Shire. Thank you.”

Pomona farewells community hero

MEMBERS of the Pomona community have paid respect to a dedicated community hero.

Pomona’s Brian Lawson passed away on Saturday 3 February.

Brian was a life member of Men’s Shed Pomona and honorary manager of the Pomona & District Community House, where The Lawson Shed is named in his honour.

Pomona Community House (PCH) coordinator

Heather Manders said the opening of the grand shed in May 2011 was a major highlight.

“This day was when the community celebrated the completion of the shed

project.

“This was a day we celebrated Brian’s hard work and dedication to the project – and named the shed in his honour.

“This was one of those wow moments and so well deserved.”

Heather said she remembers many days when Brian worked tirelessly late into the afternoon to prepare the job site for the local volunteer tradies, who would work the next day.

“He wasn’t happy unless his boots were dirty.”

As a member of the Community House for over 16 years, Heather said Brian was always popping up doing odd jobs here

and there, fixing things and making the work environment a good place to be for their wonderful volunteers and staff.

“Brian was always very busy applying for grants and when he retired from PCH in 2019 he had acquired a whopping one million dollars for our local community projects that included the Pomona Men’s Shed.

“It’s been an amazing journey working with Brian. He was an extraordinary man with a huge community spirit and a heart of gold.”

Brian was farewelled with a funeral at Gregson & Weight Noosaville followed by a burial at Tewantin on 12 February.

Council announces new round of grants

NOOSA Council will soon begin taking applications for the latest round of community grants, Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF) grants, and a brand new youth grants program.

Grants Officer Meagan Monk said council offered the range of grants to support and empower local community groups, artists and young people to deliver projects that make Noosa more vibrant and inclusive.

“Council’s special oneoff, out-of-round, Youth Response Grants Program will support projects that tackle social, cultural, en-

vironmental and economic issues impacting young people.

“We aim to support youthled entrepreneurship, innovation, active citizenship, and social cohesion.”

Each of the grant programs opened for application on 1 February.

The Community Grants Program provides essential assistance to local community groups, organisations and clubs to execute various community projects and events.

RADF grants are specifically for individuals and community groups involved

in arts and culture in the Noosa Shire. This program, in partnership with the Queensland Government, supports the growth of local arts and culture in regional Queensland.

The application period for these grants, plus Community Grant applications, closes on 14 March at 12 noon.

The Youth Response Grant program closes on 29 February at 12 noon.

For more information about each of the grants, visit council’s website at noosa.qld.gov.au.

quality and calibre of these companies and take out the award is fantastic.”

Shelley said their business is driven by their commitment to manufacturing the highest-quality bedding products, their unique approach to retail, and their dedication to customer satisfaction.

“Through systemisation and a focus on excellence, we will achieve our goals and continue to grow and succeed in the industry.”

Robert and Shelley, who have lived in Cooroy for nearly 50 years, have owned the business since 2006.

Shelley said with over 40 years of experience they produce a wide range of bedding products including mattresses, toppers, electric bed mattresses, ensemble bases, and floating timber slat bases.

“Unlike other retailers, we manufacture and custom

make the products we sell in our shops. This allows us to have full control over the quality and customisation options available for our customers.

“We offer over 100 choices in six standard sizes for our domestic range, ensuring that customers can find the perfect mattress for their needs. We also have a commercial range specifically designed for hotels, motels, and mining industries.

“Furthermore, we offer wholesale services and manufacture mattresses for other companies under their branding.

“We also specialise in providing custom-sized mattresses for clients in the caravan, truck, boat, camper, motorhome, and horse trailer industries.”

2024 Local Government Election

to fix the basics.

“Current councillors have had years to fix problems with the basic services that residents are paying for,” says Nick.

If elected, I will get back to the basics for all of Noosa Shire’s regions and concentrate on the following priorities.

Rates: At a time when many are struggling with the cost of living and interest rates and when council’s cash reserves are piling up, I, like most, want to see the very minimum rates. I will lead better management of Noosa Council to fix budgeting priorities so that we deliver the most affordable rates.

Roads and infrastructure: The lack of

spending on infrastructure is visible everywhere. I will fix the issues with our roads through proper planning and budgeting for locality-specific solutions that are based on what our communities need and deserve.

While I oppose the state’s mandated 18,000 additional people in the Noosa Shire over the coming years, we need to be realistic. It is critical we properly engage with locals to understand and fix local issues.

Rubbish: Can you believe that in our Noosa Biosphere council is burning off methane gas from the dump and is one of the biggest contributors of CO2? There are other options to simply converting methane into CO2. I will work to find better solutions – ones that provide more benefits to our community.

The community wants hard rubbish collections reinstated. I will listen and deliver the services the community needs.

Environment: I will ensure that what makes our Noosa Biosphere special is protected! I will review environmental projects to establish performance versus planned objectives, and their time frames, so that ratepayer funds are well-managed, and that council is always accountable for results.

Noosa River: I will protect the Noosa River in partnership with the state-funded Resilient Rivers Program to develop a catchment action plan. In the process I will ensure that we can access both state and federal government funds to implement our Noosa River catchment action plan, rather than have the Noosa community pay for it all!

I'M a proud Noosa Shire resident, a mum, and a primary school teacher of 17 years who has been teaching locally, most recently in inclusive education. In 2015, I founded a not-for-profit organisation called Maternity Consumer Network because I wanted to fix the maternity system. We now have 1,200 members and are the leading maternity consumer organisation in the country.

I have had a career of service, and serving the whole Noosa Shire is something I am committed to. I have a history of having positive outcomes for communities, which began early in my teaching career. In 2011 I set up the first Agribusiness Gateway to Industry, which is now in over 70 schools in Queensland. This year, the not-for-profit I founded, successfully campaigned the Queensland government, which resulted in $42 million directed into rural maternity services. In the last few months, I have ensured Sunshine

Special

Coast women are the first in Queensland to have access to publicly funded home births. When elected, I plan to apply this hard work to get results for Noosa Shire residents.

I have a good work ethic, which I learnt very early on being raised on my family's farm on the Darling Downs. I've got a can-do attitude and plenty of common sense. When elected, I intend to ensure our beautiful Noosa hinterland is not forgotten.

Council needs to get back to core service delivery –whether shade in our recreational areas, roads, appropriate parking, bus shelters, footpath upgrades or community sporting facilities – plus fighting for no more increases in rates.

We need to ensure we maintain our pristine environment and make sure we get our fair share of state and federal grants, and I know how. We need to have responsible council spending and redirect council focus back to the core service delivery, which makes Noosa special.

We need to fight to keep rate rises to a minimum, keep bureaucratic growth under control and conduct proper community consultation fairly with no hidden agendas, and ensure surrounding communities are not forgotten.

I promise our hinterland community that I will continue to be a visible presence and get results for the community.

Community Matters

Experience counts.

WE can create a healthy, connected, culturally vibrant and prosperous community by placing the needs of residents and our environment first in all council decisions.

Having served as a deputy and acting mayor, I understand how to work collaboratively with the community, councillors and staff within a local government framework to deliver quality services and projects for our community.

With a strong record of protecting Noosa from overscale development and fostering projects that protect our natural areas, beaches, parks and waterways, I seek your support to continue this work, as pressures are only increasing.

I recognise that protecting your lifestyle involves delivering value-for-money quality services, facilities and assets; keeping rates rises as low as possible; and preserving the qualities that make Noosa one of the most liveable communities in Australia.

Having never been a member of any political party, I remain focused on the needs of our community first, not any party or ideology.

If elected as your mayor, I commit to the following across the hinterland and coast:

• Effective services and responsible budgeting: Improving the quality of council services, roads, footpaths, parks and facilities while keeping rates as low as possible.

• Smart development: Vigilance against over-scale and out-of-zone development, reducing short term accommodation impacts on neighbourhoods, ensuring Noosa Shire retains its community connections and identity.

• Traffic solutions: Delivering on strategies for traffic and parking relief, with residents the priority.

• Responsible environmental management: Evidence-based efforts to protect our natural assets, forests, beaches, waterways and wildlife.

• Housing solutions: Delivering dwellings for residents on modest incomes in partnership with the state, community housing providers and private industry.

• Balanced tourism: Managing peak period crowding in a way that respects Noosa’s community, environment and identity.

• Seizing opportunities: Leveraging the 2032 Olympics and Paralympics to secure what we need.

• Fostering prosperity and resilience: Recognising that small businesses support many Noosa residents and their families, preparing young people for the future through innovative projects like the Peregian Digital Hub.

Special 2024 Local Government Election

SUNRISE Beach resident Fiona Jacobs, a retired nurse, has officially entered the race for a seat in Noosa Council in the March 2024 elections.

Having actively contributed to various community causes, Fiona acknowledges the strong volunteer presence in Noosa Shire and has participated in volunteering at Katie Rose Cottage, Women Kind, and the Keep Cooloola Cool campaign to protect our national parks against commercial development.

As well as local issues, Fiona took on a role at the forefront of the campaign for voluntary assisted dying in Queensland, advocating for compassionate end-of-life choices.

Her unpaid and unwavering dedication to this cause for over four years, and the success of the campaign, underscore her skills as an advocate and her firm commitment to enhancing the community's well-being.

Fiona will prioritise residents, local empowerment, sustainable practices, and the preservation of Noosa's unique character and natural beauty.

As a completely independent candidate, Fiona ensures no political affiliations, is not an executive for any not-for-profit organisation, has no ties to commercial entities, and is not an owner of any short-stay accommodation properties. Self-funding her campaign underscores her dedication to unbiased decisions and allows her to vote without conflicts of interest.

Fiona's campaign revolves around residents and the environment, addressing key issues such as prioritising resident well-being, preserving green spaces, environmental protection, and tackling the challenges associated with short-stay accommodation. She emphasises sustainable tourism and economic diversity as vital components of Noosa's future.

Leading up to the March elections, Fiona plans to engage with residents and local business owners, actively listening to their concerns and perspectives.

For more details about Fiona Jacobs and her campaign, visit https://www.face book.com/FionaJacobsforNoosaCouncil or contact her via email at fiona@fiona jacobs.com.

Fiona welcomes inquiries from the media and the community, eager to engage with residents, local leaders, and stakeholders throughout the campaign.

COOROY resident Nicola Wilson was spurred into action to run for Noosa Council when she saw the frustration building in the community, and a call for more people with professional and financial skills to stand. In addition, Nicola considers being a relative newcomer to the area (five years) gives her an objective view of those frustrations with council.

“Being relatively new to the area gives me a fresh perspective, I’m not trying to hold on to the past, and I don’t have longheld grievances, or ties with any interest groups, developers or associations. I’d love to bring my professional and life skills to Noosa Council to make sure residents are heard, and action is taken where needed.

“There’s a lot of bitterness and division stemming from the last 10 or so years. We need people who can work together productively as a team, for the best interests of residents and the community. In

my professional career and as a volunteer I’ve been able to liaise with all different kinds of people, staying focussed on the objectives and reaching consensus. As a councillor, I’d always be focussed on listening to and serving the community.

I believe it’s time to let go of the past, and work together for a better future.

A chartered accountant and educator (in accounting), Nicola is well equipped for the role of a councillor – she’s used to summarising analysis, challenging viewpoints, working to tight deadlines, and weighing up various courses of action. There’s also a softer side: she loves to make people smile and laugh and enjoys singing in choirs and musical theatre. Most importantly, her core values are advocating for equity and justice.

“I’m always available to listen and help people solve problems. When I see someone being unfairly treated, I just want to get in and help. Local government has a huge impact on the day-to-day lives of residents, and I will use my skills to make sure issues are dealt with efficiently and effectively. I know hinterland residents often feel ignored. Everyone has a right to be heard and represented on matters that affect them.”

Nicola’s calendar is available on her website (nicolafornoosa.com) and she’d love to chat about issues you’re facing, and your hopes for the future. You can book an appointment, invite her to an event, or just turn up when she is in your area.

I

A proven track record

I bring my track record as the shire’s most experienced councillor plus decades as a professional town planner and environmental manager. I moved to the Noosa hinterland in 1981 and my dedication to the Noosa Shire equips me with the local knowledge and the skills to further protect our environment, community values and lifestyle.

I have 18 years’ experience in local government both as a councillor and a town and environmental planner. I also held senior positions in the state government including as the Sunshine Coast Director of the Department of Employment, Economic Development and Innovation and as a principal catchment ecologist.

and village communities underpin our lifestyle and our economy. We know these are under attack from threats to our natural values, a loss of village character, and congestion from too many day trippers. I have a passion to work with the community to achieve a better future.

Hinterland campaign platform

• I will continue to defend our village character – e.g. no buildings above tree height and implementing the heritage review through the Noosa Plan.

• We have replaced all the old rural bridges in the last two terms. I will now advocate for a 10-year program of gravel road sealing.

• To address the current imbalance, I will advocate to remove the transport levy by getting day trippers to pay for the free bus through paid parking or congestion charges (with resident exemptions).

• I initiated the Noosa Trail Network in 1990 and will continue to advocate for increasing the budget for walking and cycling paths and the Biosphere Trail.

• I support increased protection and rehabilitation of the Noosa and Mary River catchments and continued investment in private and public conservation programs to dedicate 50 per cent of Noosa Shire to nature.

• In 2019 I identified council land in Cooroy which is currently under investigation and planning for a state-funded community housing initiative. I will continue to argue for major investment from other levels of government to fund new affordable housing for our community.

I ask for your support to give the community a strong and experienced voice on Council.

INGRID was a Noosa councillor from 2016 to 2020 following a successful career as a Sydney consultant in organisational change, executive development and corporate communications. Notwithstanding opposition from the then mayor and councillors, and with great community support, Ingrid succeeded in improving council governance by live-streaming council meetings, introducing a public question time at Ordinary meetings, and showing how each councillor voted on motions – information not previously available to the public.

Ingrid says there's still more to do to open up the council and that, if elected mayor, she will continue to press for

greater transparency and accountability.

One of her important priorities as mayor is to achieve the intent of the Noosa Plan, which has a vision to create a resilient community and a thriving economy in harmony with the natural environment.

She says council decision-making is complex and requires good judgement. A balanced approach is needed between the long-term goals identified in the Noosa Plan and the short-term needs of the community.

Ingrid will adopt a firm approach to ensure respectful behaviour by councillors, a long-standing issue in the council. She wants to lead a council that is open-minded and gets things done.

She reveals that the council develops and announces many good strategies and plans which are left sitting on the shelf. Some examples of this are the Transport Strategy, Cycling and Walking Strategy, Housing Strategy, and Health and Wellbeing Plan, all of which require determined implementation.

She is concerned to see faster action and better communication to residents on issues like the Black Mountain landslide.

Ingrid wants to expedite a program to seal priority gravel roads in the hinterland and, in association with the community, minimise the Kin Kin quarry trucks, and seek agreement on Cooroy’s unsafe intersections.

Ingrid's overall approach to the mayor's job will be to listen to residents and respond positively and promptly to ensure that community issues are addressed.

2024 Local Government Election

PASSION, Purpose, and Progress: A Commitment to Noosa's Future, by Cr Amelia

People often wonder why I chose to step into the world of local government and why I am standing for re-election. The answer is simple: I genuinely love my job. It's not just a career for me; it's a calling. I believe in making a difference, not only for the present community but also for the generations yet to come.

While local government traditionally focuses on the three Rs – roads, rates, and rubbish – my approach extends to include a fourth R: residents.

Living in what can only be described as paradise, I acknowledge the inherent

responsibility that comes with it – the responsibility to preserve and protect our environment. My vision for Noosa is to not just maintain its status as a heavenly abode but to make it a great place for our residents to live. Prioritizing the needs and desires of our residents is central to my commitment.

In my tenure, I have come to understand that Noosa is not just a location: it's a community with distinct values. Looking ahead, my priorities revolve around ethical decision-making, community involvement, and reshaping tourism dynamics to prioritize residents and the environment.

Addressing critical issues such as deficiencies in boating facilities, stormwater upgrades, affordable housing, STAs and wastewater recycling will be key objectives in the coming years. The focus on roads, rates, and rubbish will continue, but with an added emphasis on supporting local businesses, acknowledging their role in the community's economic vibrancy.

My track record is a testament to tangible actions. With a background in law, a master's degree, and diverse professional experiences, I bring a holistic skill set to my role. As we steer into the future, my commitment remains unwavering. I aim to mould Noosa into a resilient community where fairness, environmental responsibility, and active resident participation are not just aspirations but integral components of our shared identity.

Together, we can continue shaping Noosa into a thriving haven where the well-being of residents and the preservation of our environment take precedence over everything else.

I’M RUNNING for Council as for many years I have observed Council fail to listen to the community. Residents tell me they’re fed up with not being informed about decisions which impact their lives, or if they are consulted, it seems that Council is only going through the motions.

Recent examples include the last minute inclusion of a proposed ‘Conservation Park’ concept in the draft River Management Plan, the botched ‘People’s Park’ initiative at Noosa Main Beach which restricted parking access for hinterland residents, and the failure to deliver basic services to the community – including rubbish collection at Black Mountain, road safety issues in Pomona, shade structures in Cooran and a safe and efficient intersection in Cooroy.

Most recently I worked at Katie Rose Cottage Hospice as their Head of Fundraising & Partnerships. Prior to that I have worked as a HR and executive general

Special

manager in small up to large businesses, managing teams of up to 300 staff. I worked interstate and internationally prior to returning to Noosa to raise our four children. I have degrees in Commerce (Accounting) & Arts and a Masters degree in Human Resource Management, but more importantly, I have held many leadership roles in local community organisations.

The top issues residents are telling me are important to them are:

• No commercial development in our national parks

• Bring back hard rubbish collection or tip vouchers for residents

• Prioritise services that are important to residents: better roads, pathways, public transport, waste management, parks, playgrounds and boat ramps.

For our hinterland residents, my policies are to:

• Review the budget for road maintenance across the hinterland and assess its suitability for the increasing numbers of residents who live there, with safety as the first priority

• Commit to engaging with residents honestly and responsively about the Kin Kin Quarry and its impacts on safety, residents’ wellbeing and local infrastructure

• Advocate for improved and increased public transport to and from our hinterland towns from business centres including Tewantin and Noosa.

Leigh McCready Councillor Candidate Amelia Lorentson Councillor Candidate
I’m a good listener, capable of taking on large workloads and I love solving problems!

I AM asking for your vote in the local council elections. I have been a Noosa councillor for the past four years. In that time I volunteered on the committee of Permaculture Noosa who built the Bendigo Bank Pavilion in the Cooroy Community Gardens.

This project showed me the power of a small community when they band together to achieve a common goal. I have lived in Cooroy for 22 years and we raised our family here. I love the character and style of the Noosa Hinterland towns, but as we face the pressures that growth brings, we must remain vigilant and engaged in what our community values most.

We have so much to be proud of and so much to protect. Like many people, I moved here 26 years ago because I fell in love with the place. It's important that we maintain the lifestyle we have come to enjoy.

Community Matters

One of the biggest challenges facing the council is vision. We have to adequately plan for the future to avoid the type of development and mistakes that cost us not only money, but loss of amenity and lifestyle.

I have fought for the regulation of shortterm accommodation in our neighbourhoods, small local business and koala corridors. I am passionate about regenerative agriculture, small-crop farming and local producers finding local markets to support them.

I am a volunteer at the wonderful Pomona Majestic Theatre and have worked on the Noosa Biosphere Reserve Foundation and council's Audit and Risk Committee, where my legal and academic qualifications come in handy.

Rates, Roads and Rubbish are the three R's that get residents attention and those issues are addressed when councillors look at the annual budget and expenditure. I can see that some of Noosa's infrastructure is depreciating quicker than it is being replaced and this will have to be addressed in upcoming planning and budgets. There is much work to do in our wonderful hinterland. As a previous councillor I have experience, a steady hand and a proven track record. As a resident I am one hundred percent invested in our future.

Vote 1 Tom Wegener!

A CENTRAL commitment in my re-election campaign is that our council needs to listen to the community and provide them with opportunities to have their voices heard.

By working together, we can maintain our pristine natural environment and provide the foundations for our community to thrive.

Prior to being elected as a councillor in 2020, I worked in health administration at Eden Private Hospital in Cooroy. I have been involved in community building in Noosa Shire for nearly 40 years and over the last four years have demonstrated my credentials as a councillor who is independent and puts the people first. These experiences give me a unique perspective on how we can foster a good understanding between government and community.

In support of giving equity to all voices across the shire, my vision for Noosa in 2024 is to work shoulder to shoulder with the community in establishing ‘roundtables’ used to discuss individual initiatives, within a set of aims to confront targeted issues.

I have no political party membership and am proud to be an independent representative for Noosa Shire.

I will continue advocating for growth and training opportunities in our cultural and creative industries to benefit our local communities to stimulate employment especially for our young people.

The natural environment is at the heart of what makes Noosa unique and must be preserved and allowed to flourish. It is central to the local community and economy and we can enhance all three in a way that is complementary and in line with Noosa’s values.

Housing affordability is an enormous, complex issue that is impacting individuals, communities and businesses. Addressing this requires collaboration across all levels of government and we must consider innovative public interventions.

Equity in the delivery of public services needs to be closely examined to ensure benefits are spread across the shire – from the hinterland to the coast and everywhere in between. Governments must allocate resources to provide public services that lift up those most in need.

Transport and connectivity that is safe and efficient is vital for everyone. We need to look at opportunities to improve the road network by sealing roads, addressing dangerous intersections and alleviating bottlenecks, and progressing the transport management plan.

Highest award for Cooroy Scouts

TWO Cooroy Scouts were recently awarded The Australian Scout Award, the highest award a Scout can achieve.

Juanita Richardson and Frankie Watson from Cooroy Scout Group were presented with Scout Medallions in recognition of their efforts. A culmination of challenges and projects saw the girls working toward their award for many months.

Part of the award required the girls to undertake an adventurous journey. They were required to plan and lead a patrol of Scouts on a 30 km hike over three days and two nights. They carried

all of their gear including tents, stoves and food. Frankie's journey traversed through a section of the Sunshine Coast Hinterland Great Walk and Juanita's was through the Noosa Everglades, crossing the Cooloola Sandpatch. The girls also had to achieve high levels of camping, bushcraft and bushwalking. They completed six self-directed projects and achieved a Milestone 3, which required them to lead and assist many activities with the Scouts.

Cooroy Scout Group is very proud of Juanita’s and Frankie's efforts.

Cooroy author launches debut children’s book

A COOROY author’s first children’s picture book will go on sale next month.

Lateisha Hurst’s book Let Me Be Me will be released on 25 March.

Indie Book reviewers have called her book an insightful and warm tale of understanding that being oneself is more important than being what everyone expects us to be.

“Sometimes it is hard fitting in, but it is even harder when you are a koala in a new bushland filled with a diverse community of quirky and boisterous animals, where things can often get wild,” Lateisha said.

“However, if the other animals take the time to stop

and listen, they might just learn something new about their furry neighbour.”

Lateisha said the inspiration for her book came from a sibling.

“I lived with a sibling where she wasn’t really understood and struggled socially sometimes. I wanted to highlight this challenge that many other people also experience. It provides a positive and helpful message for younger readers experiencing this while telling the story through iconic Australian animals.

“While creating my characters I knew they needed to be relatable. In choosing animals to tell the story through, the longer I thought about it, the more I realised that the animals around us have their personalities and traits that are unique. This is the message I wanted to channel most of all in this book so it made sense.

“Let Me Be Me is currently available for purchase from the Shawline Publishing website and hopefully within the Cooroy community in the future,” Lateisha said.

Let’s get body positive

LONG-term Kindness Club member Indie illustrated a poster encouraging self-acceptance and body positivity. Indie is a developing young artist with a special interest in manga art and anime. These influences are evident in her wonderful illustrations representing varying body types ... all different, all beautiful.

The inspiration for the posters was a conversation between a group of young children about appearance and comparison to others. This led to a discussion about ways to reverse a negative self-image and

how to feel better about ourselves.

Indie has been a Kindness Club member for many years. After leaving for high school, she expressed interest in remaining in the club and became one of our long-distance members.

The posters have been distributed in Cooroy, with a focus on businesses with changing rooms. If you would like a free poster for your business or organisation, please contact Wendy at thekindnessclub@ outlook.com.au

Fitness is personal development Forever Fitter with Ange

IN a world marked by constant change and the pursuit of personal growth, one tool stands out as a catalyst for transformation: fitness. Beyond its physical benefits, the journey towards a fitter self is increasingly recognized as a powerful avenue for personal development.

Here are just some of the reasons I believe fitness is fantastic for personal development.

Fitness builds character.

When individuals engage in regular physical activity, they cultivate a mindset that extends far beyond the gym.

We know setting fitness goals and working towards them teaches valuable lessons in discipline, time management, commitment, prioritisation and resilience, but what is less often recognised is that these qualities are the cornerstone for other concepts in personal development such as honour, grace and integrity.

Fitness builds your mental strength. The connection between physical and mental well-being is undeniable.

Numerous studies highlight the positive impact of

exercise on mental health, reducing stress, anxiety, and depression. Fitness becomes a sanctuary, offering a release for pentup emotions and a source of endorphins, the body’s natural mood enhancers.

Fitness helps you believe in yourself. Moreover, the pursuit of fitness nurtures a sense of self-efficacy –the belief in one’s ability to achieve goals. As individuals conquer physical challenges, they witness the tangible results of their efforts, fostering confidence and self-esteem. This newfound belief in one’s capabilities often spills over into other areas of life, empowering individuals to tackle personal and professional challenges with newfound vigour.

Fitness gets you out of your comfort zone. The adaptability of fitness routines allows for continuous growth and evolution. As individuals conquer one fitness milestone, they naturally seek new challenges, promoting a mindset of constant improvement. This willingness to step out

of one’s comfort zone and embrace new challenges is a hallmark of personal development.

Fitness provides a space for introspection. In a world where distractions abound and the pace of life is relentless, fitness provides a structured avenue for self-reflection and mindfulness. Whether through the rhythmic beats of a run or the focused determination of weightlifting, individuals find moments of clarity and introspection that contribute to mental resilience.

For all the reasons above and many (many!) more, I believe fitness is not merely a means to achieve physical well-being; it is a dynamic personal development tool that shapes the mind, body, and spirit. If you are ready to become the ‘next level version’ of you, let me know; I’d love to be part of the process.

If you want to get started, reach out – I'd love to help. Contact ange@ foreverfitter. com.au

Eden to focus on rehabilitation and medical services

IN

strategic

responding to the pressing challenges of the current mental health professional shortage, Aurora Healthcare has decided to pivot back to Eden Private’s roots, focusing on rehabilitation and medical services.

Eden Private Hospital Director of Clinical Services, Matthew Rowe, said the hospital, a prominent healthcare provider in the region, is leveraging its extensive history of excellence in rehabilitation and medical care to address the needs of the community.

“Our commitment to delivering high-quality healthcare remains unwavering. However the shortage of qualified mental health professionals has made it increasingly challenging to maintain the mental health inpatient services that we commenced during the COVID period. That said, we will continue to provide mental health day programs and we are excited to offer a new intensive mental health day program that will continue to support our existing mental health patients. We will also be collaborating with our partner hospital, Belmont Private, in supporting patients who require inpatient hospitalisation.

“This strategic pivot allows us to redirect our resources where we can make the most significant impact on our patients’ health and well-being, resetting Eden Private as a 48-bed rehabilitation and medical hospital. The extensive rehabilitation and medical services offered by Eden Private Hospital include robotic-assisted therapy (Tyro Motion Therapy). We use robotic-assisted therapy to supplement our

conventional, pre-existing, multi-disciplinary rehabilitation therapy. The use of both robotic and traditional therapies enables our patients to experience the best possible therapeutic results within the shortest time possible.”

Eden Private Hospital is the only regional hospital combining robotic-assisted rehabilitation with traditional therapies.

“Inpatient rehabilitation therapy and day programs include cardiac/pulmonary rehabilitation, falls prevention, pain management, oncology rehabilitation, orthopaedic rehabilitation, neurological rehabilitation, trauma rehabilitation and reconditioning. Additionally, we will be increasing our inpatient palliative care service in partnership with Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service.

“This strategic move aims to build on our established reputation as a leader in rehabilitation and medical services and reaffirms our commitment to delivering exceptional care to the Sunshine Coast and Noosa hinterland community.”

Noosa Mayor

THIS is my final column as mayor of Noosa Council and I’d like to take the opportunity to thank our hinterland community for their ongoing support over the last four years.

I leave with gratitude, respect, and thanks: gratitude for the opportunity to lead this council over the past four years, respect for the work that our council team continues to do, and thanks for the support and opportunities to serve that this role has created.

But most of all I leave with pride – pride for all that we have achieved together.

We received some heartening news, with the state government announcing more resurfacing work for the Cooroy railway bridge and adjoining roads. The commitment comes after council took the community’s concerns about the condition of the state-controlled road to Transport & Main

Roads Minister Bart Mellish. I wrote to the minister and the local member requesting urgent action, and it’s great to see a positive outcome for our residents following advocacy by council. Our latest grants funding round is now open.

We’re taking applications for community grants, Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF) grants, and a new youth grants program.

The application period for these grants, plus Community Project Grant applications, closes 14 March at 12 noon.

The Youth Response Grant applications close at 12 noon on 29 February. If interested, contact our grants officer Meagan Monk for assistance.

And finally, just a reminder that the local council elections take place on March 16. Early voting starts on March 4. This is your chance to decide who you want to represent your shire for the next four years. Your vote counts, so please take the time to vote and elect the next council for Noosa.

It’s been an honour and a privilege to serve you over the past four years.

Rob Skelton Independent State Member for Nicklin

THANK you to all the constituents who contacted my office after the recent repair job on the Cooroy railway overpass failed to meet community expectations.

After advocating to the minister for a better solution for Cooroy, my office has been notified TMR will be calling for tenders on the complete resurfacing works of 1.3 km of Cooroy Connection Rd, which will include resurfacing works on the bridge deck at the railway overpass.

I welcome this development as a step in the right

direction.

We are still advocating to have community consultations reopened.

If you would like to see this, you can sign my petition calling for community consultations for Elm and Myall St intersections here: bit.ly/CooroyIntersections

I was privileged to attend the Sunshine Coast Bunyas Rugby League Carnival at the Nambour Crushers fields held 9–11 February. I’m very proud to be a sponsor of this event.

Wet weather meant the conditions were a little damp, but spirits remained high. It turned out to be an awesome day for local rugby fans.

Thank you to the Queensland Ambulance Service team for taking the day off to provide free CPR lessons.

IN September 2023 I wrote to Tanya Plibersek, Minister for the Environment and Water, to express my concerns about the proposed clearing of vital koala habitat at the Kin Kin Quarry site.

Last month I received a response advising that the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act) has a framework for protecting matters of national significance and any proposed action that will have, or is likely to have, significant impact on a protected matter must be referred for

consideration.

If the minister or one of her delegates agrees that the quarry clearing is likely to have a significant impact, it will be determined to be a ‘controlled action’ and must undergo rigorous assessment before a decision is made whether to approve it. This assessment process also includes further opportunities for public comment.

At this stage, no decision has been made on whether the Kin Kin Quarry application is a ‘controlled action’ and the project status is still listed as Awaiting Information. My understanding is that the minister is awaiting further details from the quarry operator before this decision is made.

You can keep track of the progress of this proposal via the EPBC Act Public Portal, epbcpublicportal.awe.gov. au/all-notices

Animal talk with Craig

Us and them

AT some point in our distant past, there was a merging of our society (such as it was) and that of the animals we now keep as pets. Imagine the thrill experienced by the first human to mount a horse – the exhilaration of speed and mobility surely accompanied by much whoopin’ and a hollerin’ from bystanders and rider alike. An event that changed the course of history.

When agriculture developed to the point where storage of grain was required, cats were drawn to the inevitable vermin. Their value in controlling grain pests has morphed over millennia of selection for appearance and temperament to the amazing range of domestic cats we see today.

Around 10,000 years ago, evidence for canine domestication begins to appear in the archeological record. At a time when human society was far more hierarchical and brutal, the integration of dogs with their very similar pack mentality was apparently seamless and allowed

dogs to become an asset to human survival.

I have spent time in countries where packs of dogs roam freely and I was always fascinated to watch how they interacted with one another. The hierarchy is strictly adhered to for social harmony to endure; lower-ranked individuals submit, move out of the way and even surrender food to higher-ranked dogs. Subordination is usually met with violence. When territory is involved, the pack comes together to defend. Walking around the town in Fiji where I did most of this observational study meant encountering a fresh pack of dogs every few hundred metres. They would rush up baying to the invisible demarcation of their respective territories then peel off for the next crew to take over.

As dog owners, the trick now that we have moved on to a more civilised way of life is trying to emulate the dog’s inherent need for order without resorting to the violence and brutality intrinsic to dog

society. If your boss was on to you day in and day out telling you to “do this, do that” you would probably quit your job. Dogs, on the other hand, seem to thrive on being given direction and can become quite anxious if the decision-making is left to them. Assertive leadership is key to a successful human–dog bond, and in my experience the more ‘jobs’ a dog is given and the more black and white the expected behaviour is, the more confident and content your dog will be.

AUTUMN is fast approaching, so what does that mean for our snakey mates?

Usually around this time of year, we get a bit of rain. This means the snakes are looking for dry places on those wet days. So remember to keep your doors and windows closed.

It is also still snake-hatching season so there are baby snakes everywhere at the moment. This is what we call silly season in the industry: lots of snakes on the move and lots of calls around the clock.

So keep an eye out folks –there are a couple of months still to go before it slows down. As always, my team and I are always here if you need us, 24/7. Call 0499 920 290.

IMPACT Boxing and Fitness boxers have embarked on their first road trip for the year to help out a fellow boxing gym.

Coach Mark Evans said they headed to Dysart for Dig Deep Boxing Club’s open competition sparring day to help raise funds for their travel to get their team to tournaments across Queensland. Team Impact took six boxers and all boxers performed extremely well in front of a large (700) crowd.

“These guys travelled 30,000 km last year to compete. So a quick

23-hour return drive for us was nothing in comparison. Makes you appreciate the effort that these remote clubs put in for their kids.

“Over 50 matched exhibition bouts with 17 clubs who made their way out here – a great effort by all.

“With our new club bus on the road, we aim to support as many of these remote clubs as possible.”

If anyone is interested in sponsoring the bus in any way, please contact Mark at the gym.

BLISSFUL acreage living in the lush countryside of the Noosa hinterland is ready and waiting for its next exciting chapter. You’ll love this classic Queenslander, with many original features, on 85 acres of gently undulating horse- and cattle-friendly land, offering gentle, peaceful rural living just minutes to the delightful village of Cooran.

The home is a typical highset design with northerly-facing porch (with ramp access), three bedrooms, one bathroom, large country-style kitchen, and study/ sunroom on the upper level, and laundry plus double car parking (tandem) and storage/multipurpose space

under.

With a hardwood frame, hoop pine flooring, high ceilings, original casement windows, french doors and window hoods, there is plenty of old-world charm to fall in love with. Other features include ceiling fans, electric oven with gas cooktop, and walk-in pantry. Infrastructure on the property includes fencing for boundary and four-paddocks, functioning bore, septic system, 5,000-gallon rainwater tank, and a 12 x 9 m 4-bay shed with powered workshop and cold room. With three spring-fed dams, a seasonal creek and the bore, there is abundant water for irrigation and livestock.

Approximately three quarters of the land is cleared and useable, with a treelined ridge at the top of the property providing a glorious leafy outlook from the house and backyard. Located in a verdant valley, the surrounds are lush and green (particularly after all the summer rainfall); it is a truly picturesque setting.

The rich pasture provides ample fodder for cattle and horses to graze, and the soil is also conducive to the growth of fresh produce.

There are existing mango and avocado trees flourishing, and plenty of opportunity to extend/create a fruit orchard and thriving vegetable garden.

IT has been almost three years since Noosa Hinterland Real Estate opened its doors, and its success is still ongoing with the business now building and expanding from residential and lifestyle properties into areas such as property management, rural and farm sales. With such growth comes the ability to welcome more team members.

This month Noosa Hinterland Real Estate is excited to introduce two fantastic additions to the team.

Suzie Klein joins Sandy,

Kate and the sales team at Noosa Hinterland Real Estate, specialising in the Boreen Point, Cooroibah, Cootharaba and Kin Kin rural and residential markets. Suzie and her husband moved to their farm in the Noosa hinterland seven years ago to raise their herd of Brahman cattle. Suzie comes with a diverse skill set that includes navigating the full life cycle of multi-million dollar deals across the banking, private equity, and mining industries. Having travelled exten-

sively internationally, Suzie has successfully built an impressive list of clients from across the globe and is a passionate real estate agent with an impressive resume.

Carmen Plumb also joins the team as the sales manager – a dedicated professional with over 20 years of diverse administration and customer service experience that was gained across various regions including the Northern Territory, New South Wales and Queensland. Her journey has led to a notable nine-year career in the real estate industry managing thousands of contracts over that time.

Carmen’s wealth of experience and expertise will be an advantage as she starts stepping out from behind the desk into the wonderful world of property sales and business development.

If you want to sell, buy or rent, please contact one of our lovely team members who are servicing from Noosa to the Noosa hinterland, Gympie and regional through to the beautiful Mary Valley.

As you step inside, the white Colorbond roof shields a home barely touched by time, where the large and practical kitchen has silently witnessed the laughter and warmth of countless family meals.

There is plenty of storage, which is a hallmark of this home, as it preserves memories and accommodates the practical storage needs of today. Outside, blossom-filled trees planted during the house’s construction provide an abundance of shade over the chicken

coup, while a workshop hand-built from locally milled timber still stands as a testament to craftsmanship. Raised vegetable beds eagerly await rejuvenation, and established fruit trees complement the neatly presented house garden.

Other features include two large rainwater tanks serving the house, and another for the workshop, three skylights throughout including in the kitchen, gas hot water and cooking, and a 1.6 kW solar system. A solid timber fence around the yard completes the picture.
