The scarecrows come out to play It’s like the plot of a book written by the horror fiction writer Stephen King – about this time every year strange creatures appear suddenly in the fields and towns of the Mary Valley as the region celebrates the popular Scarecrow Festival, which will run until the end of October. The picture-perfect landscape of the valley is made more colourful by about 50 entries in the official best scarecrow competition to be judged by ABC radio personality Rod Blackmore, but many more characters will emerge, inspired by people’s imagination and whatever materials are at hand.

State Govt grant assists Noosa Show Society The Noosa Country Show did not go ahead this year, causing the show society to take a financial hit. However, help is at hand via a $14,419 state government grant designed to assist smaller show societies throughout South-East Queensland.

Queensland Local Government Minister, Sterling Hinchliffe, said the program targeted financial support for operating costs among show societies that own their grounds.

Community spirit rises to meet COVID challenge Pomona and District Community House (PCH) management, staff and volunteers met the challenges of delivering services in a COVID-19 world that required reduced operating hours and limited personnel to conduct its business in the first half of the year, according to PCH coordinator, Heather Manders. The organisation had conformed and continues to conform with Queensland Government health restrictions, she
said, while maintaining the enthusiasm of volunteers eager to continue assisting community members during a time of obvious need. Ms Manders was speaking ahead of the organisation’s Annual General Meeting, to be held at the Pomona Memorial Hall at 9.30am on Saturday 17 October. Continued page 3
