Public Forums – A message from Allan Bonsall IT'S TIME TO MAKE UP OUR MINDS. On Saturday, March 9th we have the power to decide how our future is governed at the local level.

Do we vote YES to return a local Noosa Council, or do we vote NO to keep the Sunshine Coast Regional Council in charge ?

Most people who live here do so because they enjoy our lifestyle and surroundings. So let's take time out to really think about what we want from our local government.

YOUR VOTE IS NOT ABOUT WHO IS RIGHT OR WRONG ABOUT THE COSTS OF DE-AMALGAMATION. It should be based on what will be the best outcome for YOU and how your lifestyle can be preserved.

A number of community organisations are hosting community engagement forums with support from Free Noosa volunteers to give you the opportunity to have input into the future shape of YOUR region.

Residents will be given the opportunity to identify what has changed for the good; and what has changed for the worse.

What changes you would want to keep and what changes you would want to be rid of.

We will then examine the implications of a YES or a NO vote.

Whether YOU have enough confidence that the Sunshine Coast Regional Council can deliver on your expectations, or whether you believe Noosa needs to stand on its own. In other words, which vote represents the greatest risk to your lifestyle; a YES vote in favour of de-amalgamation; or a NO vote, to remain as part of the Sunshine Coast Regional Council?

A representative of Free Noosa will be in attendance to help answer your questions. You can use their answers to help you reach your decision but the ultimate choice is yours.

The de-amalgamation vote on March 9th will shape our future. It will affect our day-to-day lives much more than most of us realise for a very long time. It's something we can't afford to get wrong, because there will be no second chance.

The former CEO of Noosa Council, Bruce Davidson says a YES vote means we can bring back the services taken away in the last few years and have a financially strong local Council again without increasing rates.

But this isn't just a matter of money. Ask former Councillor and well-known local identity Doug Bettens what it's all about, and he'll answer in one word - community.

Doug Bettens has put a lot into the rural area he loves so much. For him, an approachable local Council is the hub of a wheel that radiates out into the community.

He says "we used to have a Council and Councillors that come from here and understand what we're talking about.

Many of us out here feel our community is slowly dying under this current, distant council."

The rural area and its well-being is also deep in the DNA of Jodie Williams. Jodie is well known to most people in the area as someone with three great passions in life; animals, food and her community.

Mayan farm on the Kin Kin Creek produces free range beef, pork, ducks and chickens and is the source for Jodies successful Black Ant Gourmet range of dips and condiments as well as her catering business.

Jodie calls Kin Kin her 'diamond in the rough'. She's determined to help return her local council to restore the services lost in recent years. Jodie says the axing of free kerbside rubbish collections and a big reduction in roads and parks maintenance have taken their toll.

She says dealing with local Councillors and a new Noosa Council will be a huge step in the right direction.

Doug Bettens and Jodie Williams have both urged people to think long and hard before they vote, and to think about what sort of future they want for themselves and their kids.

Public forums at Cooroy on February 21st and Pomona on February 23rd will allow people to have their say about what kind of future they want. They will be run by Allan Bonsall from Kin Kin, and should help people decide how they want to vote in the referendum.

BRING YOUR BILLS DAY is coming to Pomona Are you having problems managing your bills? Are you feeling pressured by people you owe money to? Do you want to speak with someone who understands financial issues?

On Wednesday 20th March, 10.00am – midday, the Pomona & District Community House will be hosting a BRING YOUR BILLS morning. At this free drop-in event, you are invited to bring your bills and discuss your financial options direct with a financial counsellor.

No appointments are necessary.

Agencies attending the Bring Your Bills day include: 

UnitingCare Financial Counsellors – provides financial assistance and advice.



St Vincent de Paul – Information on services including No Interest Loan Scheme (NILS)



Legal Aid Consumer Protection Unit – information and advice on legal matters



HESS (Home Energy Saver Scheme) assisting low-income households experiencing difficulty meeting and paying for their energy needs.



Food Connection Pomona – providing low cost food hampers for those in need.

Other agencies are yet to be confirmed for the event.

The Pomona Community House would like to thank Melanie Warren, Senior Practitioner of Financial Counselling with UnitingCare, for her work in helping to organise this event.

Free Talk Saturday 23rd March Time: 11am Pomona Community House @ Lawson Shed Angie Andrews is the author of seven books, most are endorsed by doctors including her latest book "Cookin' for Cures." This is a cook book that helps people to understand how to use Aloe vera in their drinks and food to gain great health. Some local doctors like it as it is something people can do at home while they are seeing them.

You can read the many testimonials in the book of people that were very sick and are now 100% healthy. One elderly gentleman complained of aching joints and hated getting out of bed, after drinking aloe vera every morning for one week he was leaping out of bed like a young lad again and wishing he had started doing this many years earlier.

There are many things you need to know about the Aloe vera plant like how old it needs to be, and how to get the bitterness off it, so I am doing many free talks around the Sunshine Coast area to help people to understand how they can use this wonderful plant most of us have in our garden to gain great health.

The book can be purchased at most local newsagents or Independent book stores for $24.95 or you can buy an e-book from my web site for $14.95. But you can get an autographed copy for $20 at the hall if you come to the talk.

The Pomona Customer Contact Centre of Bendigo Bank has donated $500 to the club for the purchase of a sparkling new set of bowls to be auctioned off.

The eventual winner will have the choice to swap the bowls for whatever set they prefer from Bowlers Paradise in Minyama and money from the raffle will go back into the club.

Pomona Bowls Club chairman, Garry Evans gratefully shook hands with Pomona Customer Contact Centre manager, Hayley Saunders last week thanking her for the recent cash injection into a club.

“We’re a club big in heart and rich in tradition. We see this as a great fit for our bowls club and our local Pomona Customer Contact Centre.

It’s great to have them in town now and we’re excited to be sponsored by a bank that is continually giving back to its community,” Mr. Evans said.

Those sentiments were echoed by the manager of Pomona Customer Contact Centre, Hayley Saunders.

“Our sponsorship of the raffle at Pomona Bowls Club is hopefully the start of a great relationship. We’re looking to get involved with events and sponsorships - just like our annual support of the Pomona King of the Mountain Festival. The more people support us, the more we can give back. Our motto is ‘bank with us and everyone benefits’. We hope the raffle is a great success,” Hayley said.

Pomona Bowls Club has 100 bowling members and 500 social members, and has been in operation since 1948. They promote the sport of lawn bowls in the district and hope to attract new members both young and old to the sport.

I think we all appreciated the break over the Christmas New Year period but we are back into action again now in spite of the heat. We meet at 6.30 am on week days in front of the Community House and we try to find the coolest, shadiest spots to walk. We welcome a new member, Julie, who has proven to be very enthusiastic.

For 2013 we are changing the Moon Walks to the Wednesday nearest the full moon. The February Moon Walk will be on 27 February with the March one being on 27 March which is the precise date of the full moon.

Congratulations to Ellen L for receiving her badge for 500 walks (not bad for less than three years) and for being nominated for the Golden Shoe Award. It was well deserved.

We are looking forward to sharing walks with other Walk for Heart groups in the Sunshine Coast region during the coming year.

Improve health with Blue Care program Blue Care is offering Noosa residents of any age living with a chronic health condition or their carers, a specialised six-week program titled Living a Healthy Life.

The program is beneficial for people whose condition impacts their ability to perform everyday tasks.

Studies have shown participants or their carers who complete the program have an improved sense of well-being and quality of life.

The next course runs from February 18 to March 25 with weekly meetings from 9am-11.30am on Monday Mornings at Cooroy Uniting Church Hall, 51 Maple Street Cooroy.

A gold coin donation is requested at each session to cover refreshments and book loan.

Pomona Healing Centre opened on Tuesday the 5th of February at 9 Station Street Pomona ( the old masonic hall). Offering Meditation, yoga, workshops, massage, energy work, sound healings, crystal healings and more to come.

The centre has space to rent for other practioners and workshop facilitators. Tuesday’s, Ishtarlia takes a guided meditation and sacred sounding using voice and singing bowls. Times are 10am and 6.30pm.

Cost is $11.

Pomona Healing Centre is open Monday’s and Tuesday’s at this stage and other days by appointment.
