Beneteau Group CEO fred FRANCE | THE Beneteau

Group has terminated the functions of Bruno Cathelinais, CEO of the world’s number one sailboat builder, over “differences of opinion” on the yard’s development going forward. Cathelinais was just 32 when he joined Groupe Beneteau in 1989, rising quickly through the ranks to become general manager – a position he held for 20 years – and CEO since 2005. In a recent open letter to Beneteau dealers, the vice president of the company’s board of surveillance, Annette Roux (née Beneteau), paid tribute to Cathelinais’s 25-year contribution to the company as a tireless worker in the pursuit of the Group’s success and she thanked him for what he

had achieved. Explaining his sudden departure she referred to a company rule, which apparently she herself had also observed, that executives should stand down from senior executive board roles on attaining the age of 60. According to her letter, Cathelinais, at the age of 58, was unwilling to accept the requirements for succession leading to a major difference of opinion that led to his departure. With the stated aim of entrusting the management to a younger generation, Roux confrmed the appointment of the recently recruited general manager of the Boats Division, Hérve Gastinel, as head of the Executive Board. Gastinel was previously CEO of French tile manufacturer Terreal from 2001 until earlier this year.

Gilching for deployment on Lake Starnberg, where the use of internal combustion engines is strictly limited. The heart of the system is provided by two Deep Blue Hybrid motors – each delivering an equivalent of 80hp. Banks of automotivegrade lithium batteries provide energy for propulsion of the 6.5-tonne boat and more than 50kW/h of electric power is also available for auxiliary equipment onboard. The frst boats will be launched in time for the coming season.

THE NETHERLANDS | This

The event organiser says that based on the current rate of incoming applications, the trade show is well on course to beat last year’s record number of exhibitors. There has also been steady growth in demand for space at MeTS, with many exhibitors increasing their number of square metres. “We are delighted that the average stand size is now almost back at the levels witnessed prior to the fnancial crisis of 2007,” says rai amsterdam’s maritime domain manager irene Dros. “it is also excellent to see that

over 150 new exhibitors have joined the MeTS family this year, a fgure that is expected to reach the 200-mark by the time we open for business.” Boat Builder awards a number of new initiatives will be taking place at this year’s show, including the inaugural Boat Builder awards for Business achievement. has reported sales of US$1.14bn for its second quarter of 2015, a 6% gain over the same quarter a year ago. Net income rose to US$107.6m compared to US$87.1m a year ago. Brunswick chairman Dustan McCoy said that currency fuctuations impacted sales and net income for the quarter. On a “constant-currency” basis from the second quarter of 2014, sales were up 11%. McCoy said that each business segment saw

double-digit growth, with the strongest growth in fbreglass sterndrive/inboard boats, marine parts and accessories, fbreglass outboard boats and outboard engines. “The successful execution of our growth plan is leading to market share gains in many of our key product categories, and enabling our view of continued solid earnings growth in 2015,” said McCoy. “Our full-year plan refects more favourable earnings growth rates and margin expansion in the second-half of 2015.”

The Marine Engine segment had sales of US$689.2m for the second quarter, up 6% from a year ago. Sales were led by its P&A business, which included companies that Brunswick acquired in the last year. The Boat segment had sales of US$349.3m for the quarter, up 8% compared to a year ago, and operating earnings of US$20.9m compared to $19.9m a year ago. McCoy said the growth in fbreglass boats was partially offset by declines in aluminium boats.

Mexico to deport US boaters without tourist visas mexico | Mexico’s federal governMent has been stepping up inspections of California boaters visiting its territorial waters for fshing and other recreational purposes. According to the Los Angeles Times, the country’s immigration authorities will immediately deport US boaters who do not have the correct entry papers. The paper reported that until now, boaters not carrying tourist permits, passports and fshing permits have been given warnings. But the Mexican government plans to crack down on potentially thousands of wayward US boaters. That could mean boats being towed to Ensenada for administrative

The activities include sportfshing,

cruising and sailboat racing. California boating and fshing groups say the rules are confusing. “I think the core of the issue in many cases is that people are willing to follow the rules; they’re just not sure what they are,” Ken Franke, president of the Sportfshing Association of California, which represents 170 marine recreational businesses, told the paper. Mexico has recently been working with groups in Southern California, particularly San Diego, to clarify the rules. Its federal government launched a new website and app that include links and instructions in English and Spanish for obtaining fshing and visitors’ permits.

Slikkers has also shut down Energetx, a company launched in 2008 to build composite wind turbines. Slikkers told the website that Tiara, which builds high-end motoryachts and convertibles, has had slow but sustained growth in the last three years. The company has also changed its business plan and model lineup due to new consumer buying patterns. “We’re emerging from a bad era as it relates to the economy,” Slikkers told the website. “Not only did we recalibrate the business as a result of the new economy, but we also had to recalibrate what people expected out of our product.” Slikkers said consumers are now spending less time per trip on their boats, moving from multi-week cruising to weekend or day trips. In order

to accommodate the changed usage patterns, Tiara has launched new products that are more versatile. The Tiara Q44, which will be offcially launched later this month, was designed to be a “Swiss army knife” of the boating world, according to Slikkers. It can work with either long hauls or day trips.

WeÕre evaluating some of the surges in the marketplace to determine if theyÕre a fad or some kind of trend Slikkers said that the company has adopted a strategy of regular newproduct development to hedge against the cyclicality of the boating business. Between its two brands, Tiara and Pursuit, S2 has launched 10 new products in the last four years. Slikkers added, however, that S2 will be

Net income was up by ¥19.9bn or 61.7% compared to the frst half of fscal 2014. AustrAliAn government is to adopt emissions standards for non-road engines – including outboards, PWCs and petrol inboards – as part of a National Clean Air Agreement. Australia’s Environment Minister, Greg Hunt, has given the go-ahead for the standards to be drafted by a “working group of experts from industry, government and the community” by the end of this year, with implementation planned for the frst half of 2016.

The key part of emissions standards has been in broad agreement since 2010. The US standard has become the de facto world standard and that’s also the plan for Australia. Government documents also indicate that an evaporative standard mirroring USA EPA will also be part of the standard, with low permeation tanks and hoses, backfow valves and a carbon canister on the fuel vent. Industry sources are looking to replicate the Canadian model for legislation and piggy back off the US standard.

Sunbird acquires IAG Yachts china| Sunbird YachtS, china’S only publicly listed yacht-builder, has acquired a 55% stake in IAG Yachts as part of a major initiative to rejuvenate and expand the Chinese yacht-building industry. The cost of the acquisition is reportedly RMB 110m (around US$18m), with this comprising RMB 60m in cash and RMB 50m in stock. Sunbird Yachts was established in 2003 and it operates three new building facilities in Hunan Province at Yuanjiang City, and at Zhuhai and Foshan in Guangdong. It also has a number of associate companies both in China, Hong Kong and the US. The acquisition of the IAG stake is understood by IBI to be part of a wider initiative to strengthen and enhance the superyacht capability of Zhuhai and the Pingsha Town yacht-building area, where a number of yards including Jet Tern, McConaghys and Hershine have their facilities. NISI Yachts Group/Tricon Marine are also known to be part of the Sunbird deal, but exactly how has not yet been clarifed. Reports received

sunbird is pursuing a stronger presence internationally

by IBI suggest that the NISI/ Tricon yard and facilities have been acquired also by Sunbird but this has not been confrmed. In a statement, Sunbird talks of a “yacht manufacturing bottleneck” in China when compared to the development of the global yacht market. With the IAG purchase, it seeks to establish a “stable operation with sustainable development and a multi-product series”. Sunbird hopes to gain more recognition from the international industry. It is pursuing a stronger presence

internationally and wants to gain wider recognition from a growth in global customers. In the next fve years, Sunbird Group will have: • a super luxury yacht brand line (more than 100ft/30m) • a series of economic bestselling yachts • a power/sailing boat series • a deluxe business travel • a passenger boat series • an ultra high-speed aluminium alloy, steel commercial boat series • an offcial and government boat series • a special working-assist boat series, etc.

The statement highlights Sunbird’s earlier takeover of Polymarine Yacht, which is the biggest OEM yacht manufacturer in China and a record-holder for building fast speedboats in China. The statement suggests that the IAG transaction will help Sunbird become the top yacht manufacturer in Asia and at the same time boost China’s yacht resource through consolidation as well as enhancing Sunbird’s integrated capability to be a complex and international yacht group. “After acquiring IAG, the company’s design and production ability on the super, luxury yacht series will be enhanced and it is a signal that Sunbird will get into the global super and luxury yacht market with full preparation.” IAG’s latest superyacht is currently in Hong Kong awaiting transport by Sevenstar to the US. She is the 41.1m IAG 135 custom superyacht King Baby, built for a US client. It is the frst of a new series called the Noble Star 140, and will appear at the 2015 Ft Lauderdale show.

Sanctions take their toll, but Russian marine sector remains resilient russia| Despite the

ongoing economic crisis in Russia, the Russian Ministry of Sport and Tourism claims that wealthy Russians are gradually recovering from the shock of sanctions and are beginning to spend again on hobbies and leisure pursuits. Though the Russian yachting federation predicts a decline in domestic sales of 30-50% this year, there are pockets of activity in the market that suggest the domestic industry is far from fat-lining, whilst anecdotal evidence suggests Russian boaters who keep their boats in popular EU yachting destinations abroad are ratcheting up their spending once more. market trends According to Anton Dolotin, head of Azimut Benetti Group Russia, it is the market for new boats up to 12m that been hardest hit by the crisis, with everyday Russian consumers much more exposed to the crisis than the wealthy who are more used to moving investments and money around. The result has meant a rise of 10-15% this year in the sale of used boats, according to the federation. Nikolai Karpuhin, director of Waterworld, which is part of the Moscow River Shipping Company, one of Russia’s leading shipping companies, claims the biggest domestic demand is currently for brokerage boats from 7m-12m, priced between 4-4.5 million roubles (US$70,000-80,000).

However, the fate of Russia’s offshore market was called into question at the end of last year when President Putin called on wealthy Russians and national businesses to return their capital and assets to Russia, potentially offering an amnesty on all those returning assets. • As IBI went to press, the Russian government offcially announced the establishment of a special state agency responsible for the development of yachting in the country – particularly in the coastal zones – on the orders of Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev.

The used boat market is performing much better, leading to a rise in sales of equipment and accessories. Customers feel more positive in 2015 because of the improved economic climate, and partly because the banking sector has started to consider funding nautical projects, a service that has been halted in recent years. The upturn is starting to beneft the domestic market as well. Salona Yachts, for example, has launched a marketing strategy to get closer to the domestic market with special promotions, offering charter management at affordable prices. The plan is based on allowing customers to afford a boat that can be operated in a charter management programme to cover the expenses. With this approach, Salona Yachts expects growth in 2015 to be around 10-15% up from last year.

The pressure is now on marina operators, as the number of boats on the market is increasing more than ever. Companies involved in offering berths are building new marinas, making sure to provide as many berths as possible. ACI Marinas, Croatia’s leading marina operator, reported 2014 revenues of around hrK 210m (uS$31.1m), up 2.4% compared with hrK 205.1m (uS$30.3m) the previous year, exceeding the company’s own annual forecast. In 2014, the company provided berthing on a permanent basis to 3,395 boats. The Croatian frm currently operates 21 marinas on the domestic market, with a new facility to be launched later this year in Slano, Croatia’s southern part. The existing marinas are ftted with a combined capacity of 6,079 berths. 

2015. Rising wages, low unemployment of just 6.3% and an infation rate that averaged 0.4% in 2014 have contributed to a renewed sense of optimism, resulting in a greater willingness to spend. The mood amongst leisure marine frms is therefore upbeat. According to Czech boating industry association APL, sales of outboard engines, charter services and personal watercraft are beneftting from new legislation passed in late 2014 that has eased tight restrictions for PWCs and motorboats on the country’s inland lakes and rivers. The new Czech law also paves the way for investment into marine infrastructure, including the construction of new marinas, boat rental spaces and fuel stations. APL vice chairman Vladimir Toman told IBI that although sales of mid-sized boats – excluding used vessels – are stagnant, demand for outboards, RIBs and small motorboats is rising. “We expect the number of boat licences issued this year to increase by around 7% to 84,000 – both for inland waterways and sea navigation,” Toman says. As for charter sales, Czech frms are reporting similar levels to 2014. “This year Czech charter companies will sell around 4,500 weeks with about 70% sold to Croatia,” says George Zindulka, owner of Yachtcharter Ltd. “There is also an increased number of boats chartered on inland lakes. For many boaters it is more convenient to charter a boat here than to drive the whole day to the sea.” Czech boatbuilders are also doing well, particularly small day-boat manufacturers such as Marine s.r.o. “The demand for our aluminium day boats from 3.5m-5.0m increased by around 6% in the frst six months of 2015, compared with 320 boats sold in the same period in 2014,” company owner Petr Novotny told IBI. The APL-organised Lode na Vode Boat Show, held each year in Prague, is a good barometer of the Czech market. The event has been growing for the past seven years and attracted around 24,000 visitors during its four-day run in April. This year’s edition, however, was combined with a show for outdoor activities. Of the total number of visitors, APL’s Toman told IBI that only 5,000 people specifcally visited the boat section, which was held on the other, less accessible side of the Vltava River – a number that could be improved, he says. 

The danish boaTing market has been showing signs of recovery since late 2014 – a trend that was confrmed at the 2015 Fredericia boat show earlier this year. The biannual event saw visitor numbers rise by 3.8% to 29,579 compared to 2013. Feedback from companies attending the March event indicated that people were more keen to spend. “We have seen a slight recovery since 2014, but sales are still dominated by pre-owned boats with very few sales of new boats,” Martin rasmussen, owner of boat sales company shipshape and member of the board of danish marine trade association danboat, told IBI. Feedback from key players, however, indicates that danish manufacturers are focusing on exports. positive signs are on the horizon. Trade in the pre-owned boat market is becoming highly competitive, as it is increasingly diffcult for people to fnd a used boat in good condition. on the other hand, boat buyers are no longer interested in old models from 20062008. Whether that leads to a boost in new boat sales is yet to be seen. 

economic climate in denmark is stable. interest rates are low and likely to remain at 0.65% by the end of 2015, the national bank is set to keep the danish krone pegged to the euro – despite some speculation that it could follow the swiss in dropping the franc’s cap to the euro – the stock market is up and production companies are generally positive. The problem for the domestic boating industry, according to danboat’s rasmussen, is a lack of boat fnancing from danish banks and tax on marine insurance, which remains at a record high of 34%.

oF The Three main scandinavian markets, Finland remained stubbornly lacklustre in 2014, thanks largely to an economy that’s been mired in recession for the last three years. signs for 2015 are hardly encouraging, with the economy predicted to expand by a paltry 0.3% and unemployment rising. Troubles over Finland’s eastern border are also proving unsettling. one of its major trading partners, russia, has been crippled by a perfect storm of rock-bottom oil prices, a devalued rouble and trade sanctions following its annexation of Crimea. one potential positive, however, is the election of former telecoms executive Juha sipilä, leader of the

a drop of 45.8%. The top source countries were Poland with 187 boats worth *3.9m (up 104%), the UK with 14 boats worth *3.6m (down 55%) and the US with 135 boats worth *2.3m (up 67%). These figures alone indicate what Finnish boaters are buying and the hot sectors of the market right now – namely small motorboats. The drop in the value of the euro has inevitably hit imports from non-euro countries. As with its Scandinavian neighbours, boating in Finland is a way of life, which is why the national association Finnboat is predicting growth in unit sales – for the frst time in six years – of around 3-5% for 2015. “We’re not going down anymore, we’re on a shallow curve up,” claims Finnboat CEO Jouko Huju. The domestic market may favour small open runabouts, bowriders and cabin cruisers, but the low euro is also aiding Finland’s big sailboat builders like Nautor’s Swan and Baltic, as well as motorsailor builder Nauticat. They have seen exports to outside the eurozone, notably to the US, rise accordingly. “It feels like the country has been holding its breath,” says Huju. “The new government is a welcome change.” 

German watersports association BVWW expects 2015 to be a similarly good year, with total sales forecast to rise by 3% on account of the nation’s economic strength. low unemployment combined with rising wages, minimal infation and low interest rates on savings has encouraged Germans to spend, and many are throwing caution to the wind and investing in luxury items such as yachts. “According to our mid-year business survey, 75% of companies judge the current business situation to be equal or better than the year before,” says BVWW managing director Jürgen Tracht. “Top of the list is the service and maintenance sector, where 97.8% of companies reported so.” The reason, he says, is down to three main developments. Boat owners are using their boats for much longer periods than in the past, and are therefore investing in equipment to enhance onboard comfort and safety. people

Statistics show that motorboat exports were up by 15.3% to 1,050 units and sailing yachts were up 0.7% to 1,093 units. Quantitative easing measures brought in by the ecB in January – causing the value of the euro to plummet sharply – should bring further growth to German exporters in 2015, many of which are targeting non-eu countries in emerging markets. as IBI went to press, claus ehlertMeyer at the dBSV said that fve large yachts valued at *811m were recently delivered to new owners, helping to boost turnover signifcantly. 

uncertainty in the future of the Greek economy has once again forestalled the little optimism that reached the leisure marine sector last year when players in the industry registered a 15-20% increase in business compared to 2013. the positive mood experienced last year lost momentum in January 2015 when the leftist Syriza party won the general election and its leader, alexis tsipras, took over as prime minister. “consumers started worrying following the announcement of national elections last december; but even through the turbulent frst months of the new government, the strong momentum of 2014 fuelled business well into april 2015,” alex Zeis, director at Motocraft, told IBI. Motocraft is a boat, engine and marine equipment distributor based in alimos-athens. “Going forward into June, and with an increased absence of consumer confdence, business has collapsed,” Zeis adds. “More recently, the referendum, bank holiday and capital controls have made the little business that remained very diffcult to materialise and has inversely changed the potential of 2015.” offcial fgures for the Greek industry have not been disclosed, but feedback

Greece’s marine export businesses, including riB and small day-boat manufacturers, have remained relatively active. “the biggest challenge for the Greek industry is to control the downturn and avoid job losses. it is expected that in general certain smaller businesses may struggle to survive,” Zeis comments. tax reforms add to an already challenging situation. the Greek government plans to raise the luxury tax on boats from 10% to 13% in october this year, and extend it to smaller vessels starting at 5m in length – an act that many believe will sound a death knell for the industry. 

The accessories and equipment sectors recorded an increase of 3.1%. in addition to the frst signs of growth in the domestic market, the 2014 statistics show the frst increase in the number of direct employees since 2008, which now amounts to over 18,230. “The crisis hit ‘democratically’ all the sectors. Boat sales in the domestic market have been at historically low levels, with the national production sold in italy for less than 7% in value. demaria recalls it was 47% in 2008. Historically the polish boating industry is based on subcontract production with Western europe, resulting in a lower cost base and a continued increase in productivity, quality and technology. The downTurn in the Spanish leisure marine market fnally ended in 2014. Boat registration started to pick up in october 2013, albeit slowly, leaving the end of 2014 with growth of 9.92%. notably, the boat charter sector was the segment with the best results, growing nearly 57% in 2014 compared to the previous year. in addition, Spain saw signifcant legislative achievements in 2014, including the amendment to registration tax for charter boats, which updates the country’s regulation on par with that of neighbouring countries. “The atmosphere is calmer than last year. Companies are reporting improved sales although mostly based on charter services and small boats, which are the two segments with the lower tax burden,” explains Carlos Sanlorenzo, secretary general of the Spanish marine trade association, Anen. he explains that in addition to VAT, boats over 8m in length are subject to 12% registration tax. It’s the same for sailboats, even for the entry level sales of inboard and sterndrive engines totalled 5,385 units, all of which were imported and valued at around *21.9m in trade. The engine market was affected by the strength of the us dollar. Looking ahead, positive results in the sale of boats and engines are challenged by the unrest in the economic and political climate. Turkey’s ruling party failed to win an overall majority in June’s general election and now the country is facing either a coalition government or an early election. Players in the market say the hung parliament has somewhat affected consumer sentiment. “it is not hard to assume that Turkey’s political ‘waiting for a new government’ situation may cause the prospect of buyers to enter in a stand-by position,” comments sahin. he adds that it’s normal at this time of year to see a drop in demand due to boaters already being at their destinations, but there is still a small but positive move in the market. superyacht builders and marina operators are two sectors with the best performance to date. “superyacht producers are signing new orders and starting new projects. We can see the positive route through our Williams diesel Jet sales,” Karina yachts’ sahin comments. growth in both sectors is likely to continue. a handful of new marinas are awaiting approval and some are due to enter operation later this year, including a new 400-berth marina for superyachts in istanbul. 

The owner, a Singapore-based entrepreneur, is a shareholder in echo along with three local partners. work on the trimaran commenced in 2014 and is set to take three years to complete. echo is also building a 46m (151ft) GRP shadow yacht that is said to be the largest GRP-infused craft built in Australia. This project is expected to be completed in 2016. echo, which is linked with an existing marine company in Henderson called evolution Commercial, is also taking on reft work. This recently included the Singaporean owner’s existing 61m (200ft) trimaran superyacht, and True North, a small 50m (164ft) cruise ship. The latter is operated by True North – a cruise company owned by Mark Stothard, one of the three local echo partners. The yard has plans to take on other new-build work and it may also build a new 150m (492m) construction hall. Henderson is also the base of Silver Yachts, formerly Hanseatic Yachts. boat shows The Australian leisure marine industry will also remember 2015 as the year in which two boat shows were held on exactly the same dates, just a few miles apart – namely, the 27th Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show (SCIBS) and the 5th Gold Coast International Marine expo (GCIMe).This happened after the organisers of GCIMe moved their event from November to May so as to coincide with SCIBS on the basis of giving the Gold Coast a maritime week of exceptional value. That theory may be questionable, but taking into consideration the follow-up on the two shows it appears the same situation will apply in 2016. The end result, however, brought success for both events in terms of business done, but the

At SCIBS the 250 exhibitors representing 500 or so brands; 500 boats and around 40,000 visitors, were statistics not dissimilar from previous years. Feedback from exhibitors, however, indicate that this year’s SCIBS was “the best show for fve years”. Some companies reported millions of dollars in sales over the four days, with an increase in leads over last year’s show. Highlights included Maritimo, Grand Banks, Palm Beach Motor Yachts, Stefan Boating world, elandra Yachts, Leigh-Smith Yachts, Integrity Motor Yachts and Multihull Solutions, among others. GCIMe organisers described the event as a working boat show and for its 5th edition it had some 200 exhibitors and well over 100 boats on display. The number of visitors was not disclosed, but the 2014 event attracted around 16,000 people. The company was sold to US plastics giant Myers industries, a publicly traded international manufacturer of plastic and rubber products, with 2013 revenues of approximately US$825m. in July 2014, the Akron, ohio-based company completed its purchase of Scepter’s manufacturing facilities, warehouses and offces in Scarborough, ontario and Miami, oklahoma, for a reported C$165m. John orr, Myers industries president and Ceo, said that with approximate net sales of C$100m in 2013, Scepter could be expected to boost Myers’ annual material handling sales by up to 30%. in its february 25, 2015 report to shareholders, Myers industries announced that its 2014 fourth-quarter net sales had actually increased by 9.4% – growth that beat analysts’ expectations and was directly attributed to the acquisition of Scepter. “The addition of Scepter provides Myers industries with the opportunity to expand upon our leadership position in the material handling segment,” said orr. “it will enable us to broaden our product offering, and better position us for long-term growth in new markets.”

Technical fuTure proof

In this series, leading marine journalist and former production advisor for a leading UK boatbuilder, TONY JONES, investigates the latest technologies that could one day fnd their way into the boating sector

Graphene, hydroGen: Time for a revoluTion? fuTure proof firsT mentioned ‘graphene’ – billed by some as the world’s frst 2D substance – quite a while ago, and although the material continues to feature in scientifc and technology journals, the promised graphene revolution has yet to take off. Graphene is ultra-light, but tough (200 times stronger than steel) and fexible. It is also a superb conductor whilst being fre-retardant and can potentially be used to create semitransparent electronics. Its potential is staggering. So why are we still waiting? One of the major impediments to the wider use of graphene is the expensive and time-consuming chemical vapour deposition (CVD) process needed to produce it industrially. But researchers from the University of Exeter claim to have discovered a new low-cost technique to produce high-quality graphene that could see the wonder material start to realise its potential. The process involves growing graphene in an industrial resistiveheating cold wall CVD system developed by UK-based Moorfeld Nanotechnology. The researchers say this system can grow graphene 100 times faster than conventional CVD systems, cutting costs by 99%. The Exeter researchers, led by Professor Monica Craciun, have already used this new technique to create a graphene-based touch sensor that is fexible and transparent. In addition to more fexible electronic devices (think foldable chart plotters and other displays), they believe such sensors will also enable truly fexible electronic skin for use in robots. So how could it change boating? It’s hard to conceive of an area on the boat it couldn’t impact. It could herald the development of new, ultra-lightweight and strong structures. Combining graphene with paint forms a unique

www.ibi-plus.com

graphene coating that could signal the end of deterioration of boats; Graphene could dramatically increase the lifespan of a traditional lithium ion battery, meaning devices can be charged more quickly and hold more power for longer. Batteries could be so fexible and light that they can be stitched into clothing. Graphene membranes could see huge advances in water purifcation technology providing more effcient desalination plants.

Researchers have taken a signifcant step towards large-scale energy harvesting and hydrogen generation Another example is the possibility of using graphene to greatly reduce the size of high-frequency antennas. It would be obviously be unfeasible to simply reduce conventional antennas to nano sizes, not only because a radio aerial so small it was invisible to the naked eye would be totally impractical, but also because such a device would require an enormous amount of power to operate. But there is defnitely potential for the construction of a new generation of antennas for use with advanced electronic devices such as personal locator beacons no larger than a shirt button. Bring on the revolution! The research fndings frst appeared in the journal Advanced Materials. http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/ doi/10.1002/adma.201501600/full This article is based on a report from Gizmag. www.gizmag.com

The hydroGen economy is just around the corner. It must be – they’ve been telling us so for years. The biggest question is, where will all the hydrogen come from? The conventional technique involves using electricity to split water molecules into hydrogen and oxygen. That would be electricity produced by generators driven by hydrogen, presumably. It would obviously be far better if the electricity was generated without requiring the burning of any fuel at all – directly from sunlight, perhaps, using solar energy. Hematite – the mineral form of iron – used in conjunction with silicon has shown some promise in this area, but low conversion effciencies have slowed research. Now scientists have discovered a way to make great improvements, opening up the possibility of using two of the most abundant elements on earth to produce vast quantities of hydrogen effciently. Hematite looks attractive for lowpower photoelectrochemical water splitting (where energy, in the form of light, is the input and chemical energy is the output) due to its low ‘turn-on’ voltage of less than 0.3V when exposed to sunlight. The big drawback is that that voltage is too low to initiate watersplitting. So researchers from Boston College, UC Berkeley, and China’s University of Science and Technology are tackling the problem with a technique of ‘re-growing’ the hematite, to produce a smoother surface, which has doubled the electrical output. Which, they say, is a signifcant step towards practical, large-scale energy harvesting and hydrogen generation. The full research results were originally published in the journal Angewandte Chemie, International Edition. The matter came to IBI’s attention thanks to a report in Gizmag. www.gizmag.com

All at sea leisure sailors are demanding larger amounts of data at sea at greater speeds than ever before, thanks to a rapid expansion of satellite communications services

recreaTional BoaTers have come to rely on fast and continuous interactive electronic connectivity with the world, just like everyone these days, to a greater or lesser degree. Perhaps it’s more important for navigational and safety reasons than when they’re getting on with their daily lives ashore. Mobile communication, even out on the high seas, is seen as essential and customer expectations have been fuelled by massive strides in communication technology. A burgeoning of communications satellite capability giving fast broadband connectivity has come on stream to meet an ever-growing demand for large amounts of data delivered instantly and seamlessly to onboard computers. For superyachts, VSAT (Very Small Aperture Terminal) Ku-band connectivity has been the norm for some time, while new faster Ka-band satcoms systems are making further inroads into this sector.  Top: inmarsat’s london headquarters For owners of small craft, for whom Bottom: ronald spithout, inmarsat maritime the size and cost of antennas and terminal Iridium GO! is a small and portable equipment would probably have ruled out unit that can be placed on the deck the satcoms option, the advent of satellite of small boats and set up in minutes Wi-Fi services looks set to bring them into to provide near real-time weather the satcoms realm too. information in the form of GRIB fles Satellite communications companies (Gridded Information in Iridium and Globalstar, Binary Form). both based in the US, “We think this is a have recently begun It could be said great step forward for to roll out such Sat-Fi that Sat-Fi has the industry,” says Kyle services so that anyone lowered the Hurst, the company’s with a smartphone or entry-level point to the maritime business tablet and out of range satcoms market for director. “It could be from land-based mobile recreational said that Sat-Fi has networks will be able boaters lowered the entry-level to access data directly point to the satcoms via satellite, almost market for recreational boaters, or indeed as if they were ashore using local Wi-Fi anyone on the planet wanting inexpensive hotspots. The result is that Sat-Fi has an even higher level of utility for maritime customers. “Navigators can easily download weather reports, maps and charts, and other information they need. So whether they want the cruise to be fast, or just leisurely fun, they have easy access to the necessary data to help them on their way, in the knowledge that they can contact emergency services if they need to.” Fast connectivity Using the term ‘Sat-Fi’ as a generic (unlike Globalstar which uses it proprietarily) Iridium’s Kyle Hurst comments: “We see the introduction of Sat-Fi products as a way to introduce the value of implementing simple, easy to use and affordable satellite communications solutions to the recreational marine market. We expect to see a steady growth in overall awareness and knowledge of the importance of staying connected at sea, as well as an increased number of recreational boaters who want to be connected, as a result of more viable communications options.” A large majority of recreational boaters seldom venture far out to sea and thus don’t necessarily need satcom, or would regard Sat-Fi as an absolute must-have.

players, notably Cobham SATCOM and KVH Industries. Cobham offers a wide VSAT portfolio, its Sailor and Sea Tel brands spanning a wide portfolio of antenna sizes across the Ku, Ka, C-, X and L-band spectra. Having sold well over 40,000 Sailor FleetBroadband terminals over time, “we are by order of magnitude the leading antenna manufacturer for Inmarsat’s L-band maritime services,” claims Jan Michelsen, Cobham SATCOM’s vice president of maritime business. As an offcial manufacturing partner of Iridium for Certus broadband, Cobham covers most satcoms hardware bases. “The breadth of our portfolio means that there is a Cobham SATCOM antenna available for almost any satcom confguration on vessels of any size and type,” Michelsen adds. Much of Cobham’s product development in recent years has been market-led and focused on combining higher data volume capacity and speed with smaller equipment. “This year we have a lot of focus on our brand-new Ka-band terminals for the forthcoming High Throughput Satellite (HTS) services. We have new antennas already available for both Inmarsat Global Xpress and Telenor’s Thor 7, which will be the frst Ka-band HTS service fully available for maritime users,” he adds. “We have developed technology that provides the same radio performance as a 1 metre antenna on our 83cm antenna – the SAILOR 800 VSAT.” market growtH Product development has continued regardless of market fuctations. “During the worldwide economic crisis the uptake in the yachting sector has been slow,” Michelsen says, “but we have seen a recovery in the last 12-18 months. Drivers for this are the ever-increasing demand for bandwidth at all times and in all regions. Where there is no terrestrial coverage the need for satcom is there. We see the trend being further strengthened now and expect High Throughput Satellite (HTS) will have a play in the years to come.” This year much of Cobham’s focus has been on the development of all-new Kaband terminals for these forthcoming HTS services, Michelsen says. “With HTS spot beam architecture even small antennas can operate in the satellite footprint,

albeit on lower CIRs (Committed Information Rate). This in turn means that more yacht owners can consider moving to VSAT as they can count on getting a strong service from smaller, lighter antennas,” he suggests. “VSAT for recreational users has been a case of ‘is my yacht big enough?’ Because HTS services can operate on smaller antennas, we could see a lowering of the ceiling in terms of boat size and the use of VSAT,” he continues. Cobham already has new antennas already available for both Inmarsat Global Xpress and Telenor’s Thor 7. All of this development across the satcoms industry gives strong signs of continued market growth. “More capabilities will, of course, persuade more people to invest in satcoms for their yachts,” Michelsen suggests, although he points out that “larger boats will already have L-band and VSAT systems installed, so we would expect such systems to fourish more in the smaller-boat market.”

The company claims its IPMobileCast multicasting technology is another extremely important technical advance because it enables yachts to affordably receive entertainment (movies, TV episodes, sports highlights, daily news) and operations (charts, weather, training) content anywhere at sea. “KVH has seen an exponential increase in the demand for broadband connectivity in the yachting sector in the past two connectivity anywhere years,” Andreasen says. “This increased Jens Gegner Andreasen, marketing demand parallels everything that is manager at US-Danish mobile satellite happening on land, where 50% of mobile producer KVH Industries, believes that internet traffc is now video, and people hotspot products may broaden the market need to stay connected to email and social at the very lowest end, or for yachts that media no matter where don’t travel very far they are.” from their home ports, However, increased but global voyaging More satcoms data capacity megayachts or capabilities and speeds don’t superyachts will need will, of course, a robust and reliable persuade more people to necessarily guarantee lower costs to users. solution such as miniinvest in satcoms “Although greater VSAT Broadband so for their yachts bandwidth availability they can be sure to might suggest lower have connectivity costs, the demand for everywhere they travel. bandwidth at sea continues to accelerate, “The advent of VSAT systems for so the costs vary depending on usage,” marine satellite communications has Andreasen says, adding that when KVH made it possible for people on yachts to introduced the mini-VSAT Broadband enjoy the same level of connectivity and service in 2007, that innovation content that they experience on land,” represented a huge savings in connectivity he says. “Our own mini-VSAT Broadband at sea for yacht owners because at the service utilises spread-spectrum time there were very limited options technology and this makes it possible to and they were very expensive and very use compact onboard terminals to deliver slow. “As more technologies, systems and high-speed bandwidth everywhere services come into play, the airtime costs at sea.” may change.” With VSAT systems, he states, it is While the above-mentioned businesses now possible for a yacht to economically have taken major shares of the marine receive and support new content, new satcoms market with the latest high-speed applications, and new cloud-based broadband services, smaller specialists services accessed by a multitude of new

have built signifcant businesses with simpler offerings. More options One such is the UK’s YB Tracking, a company that has developed compact handheld and fxed tracking and communication systems making use of the Short Burst Data (SBD) services via Sat-Fi. This is a low-cost, relatively low bandwidth system that enables M2M (machine-to-machine) satellite communication between like devices. For recreational users who do not necessarily need the latest satcoms technology, it can provide an inexpensive means of sending and receiving text messages anywhere in the world, as well as sharing systems data from, for example, chartplotters or electronic engine monitoring. Messages are carried by the Iridium satellite constellation. YB’s latest boat tracking unit, the YB3i, offers wireless connectivity so that users can connect their own smartphones and tablets. YB Tracking’s sister company, Rock Seven, offers a similar product called RockBLOCK, which is an M2M communication-only device for sending sensor-triggered alarms to owners’ mobile phones. Owners can set up customised monitoring systems to suit their own requirements. YB Tracking director Nick Farrell comments: “We see the ability to offer scaled-down satcom as an important technical advance. Many recreational boats don’t have the space or the budget for a full-size antenna or satellite broadband solution, but tiny as it is, YB3i still allows them to communicate from anywhere in the world.

www.ibi-plus.com

Even for larger boats and superyachts, the addition of a compact antenna makes almost no power or visual impact so boat tracking and M2M can be handled by YB3i, while internet access and voice comms can go through VSAT. Nick Farrell adds: “We don’t see what we’re doing as competition to VSAT or other L-band solutions that offer more bandwidth. What Sat-Fi does, though, is offer a lower-cost alternative or complement for those users that don’t always want access to the web, but like the ability to communicate at sea via email or SMS.” SatcomS Service providerS Between the communications satellite network operators and the satcoms equipment manufacturers is a third group of companies that bring both worlds together at the customer interface: the satcoms service providers. It’s they that design and engineer satcoms systems to the individual requirements of yacht owners. Marine satcoms provider Marlink, which recently became part of Airbus Defence and Space Telecom Commercial, claims to be world’s largest maritime VSAT service provider and has recently signed an agreement with Telenor Satellite Broadcasting, a major satellite provider of broadcast and data services throughout Europe and the Middle East that will increase its oceanic capacity over the next three years in these regions. “Our approach is to be technology agnostic, which is only possible as we have access to all technologies and services in the market,” explains Tore Morten Olsen, head of maritime satellite

communications at Airbus Defence and Space. “This means that we can choose the right services and equipment for the customer based on its relevance to them, as opposed to just because it’s what we have available. With that in mind, we have access to all of the latest technical advances from across the industry, including modems, antennas and the satellite network infrastructure itself.” Olsen believes no superyacht will be sailing without VSAT, as it offers the best price-versus-performance compared to L-band MSS. A good VSAT network enables multiple concurrent users to experience high-quality connectivity, and is also very positive for a vessel’s operations. “As we know, superyacht owners and operators are early adopters of technology, so being connected helps them to make the most of new systems for running more effciently – saving fuel and condition-based maintenance for equipment, for instance,” says Olsen, adding that the new Ka-band services coming online will introduce a huge amount of extra satellite capacity, providing even more choice to the recreational market. “HTS services can potentially use smaller antennas, which may enable some boats that couldn’t ft a VSAT antenna to enter the world of pay monthly VSAT services, as opposed to pay-as-you-go L-band services, which can actually work out more costly unless you are very careful with usage,” he notes. The rapid expansion of smartphone and tablet wireless connectivity in the yachting sector is evident and Marlink’s own relay tool for this is its XChange platform. A recent advance for XChange is Bring Your Own Device (BYOD), which allows everyone on board to connect their own smartphones, tablets or laptops wirelessly to the onboard VSAT. Originally developed for commercial vessels so crew could experience enhanced communications services, the account management aspects also make BYOD relevant for superyacht crews and for guests on charters. Commenting on the prices, Olsen says: “The cost has reduced to a point where the most customer beneft now comes from service enhancements. For instance, our ‘Plus’ services now come with double the bandwidth allowance or double the Committed Information Rate (CIR),

but without any increase in airtime costs. As more bandwidth becomes available we do expect some adjustments of bandwidth pricing, and we have already seen signifcant improvement by some satellite network operations anticipating the introduction of high-throughput satellites (HTS). This is beneftting our VSAT customers today,” he concludes. Costs and benefits Florida-based maritime satcoms provider MTN has seen explosive growth in data consumption over the past few years. Derik Wagner, senior vice president and Yacht Services president, explains: “The 12 terabytes (TBs) of data we deliver daily to vessels today, on average, dwarfs the 1 TB we delivered daily eight years ago. More devices per person and more apps per device have increased demand. Onboard networks have increased in complexity.” In the superyacht market segment specifcally, he observes, every single new build leaving a shipyard anywhere on the planet now has satcom solutions right from the start. “No longer a nice-tohave, this is a critical part of the entire vessel infrastructure. Communications connectivity is now as important for day-to-day operations and owner/guest satisfaction as a prepared crew and full fuel tank,” he says. With the rise in marine satcoms traffc density and speed, cost per Mbps (speed) and cost per MB (data) have dropped signifcantly in the past two years. Wagner believes they will continue to drop as satellite providers launch more high-speed capacity and competing providers continue to fght for market share. “While per-Mbps and per-MB costs are lower, increased demand for

As for user costs having come down, Verkuil observes: “It depends on the service. Inmarsat has increased the pricing of the low-end packages of their FleetBroadband services in the past years, but we notice that customers are moving from Inmarsat to VSAT because of the changing break-even point between FleetBroadband and VSAT. VSAT has unlimited usage, which becomes more attractive when the yacht is using a lot of data. Otherwise, we notice lower pricing for VSAT in general.” Like other satcoms service providers, Eddy Huisman, general manager of Dutch company Tijssen, bears witness to the near avalanche of satcoms services now

offered to the leisure marine market by satellite network operators. “This is an ever-growing list of fantastic advances in satellite communications the likes of which have never been seen before,” he says, adding: “While every newbuild motor- and sailing yacht now has satellite communications, most owners of yachts of over 24m that want satellite communications have it.” In Tijssen’s sector of the yachting market, the latest Sat-Fi services offering direct satellite contact via an onboard router for smartphone and tablet users are unlikely to have much effect. “Yacht crew are used to having free internet access via Wi-Fi onboard at much faster speeds

than provided by Iridium GO! anyway,” he says. However, owners and guests on small yachts outside this sector will be interested as these services are low cost and take up small amounts of room. “If I was off around the world again on my 15m yacht, I would take an Iridium GO! as it’s like having a cell tower in your pocket,” Huisman says. New inexpensive technical capability looks poised to bring at least limited data connectivity via satcoms to the reaches of the wider boating public. Such democratisation should be a good thing for the industry, as attendant business opportunities could well emerge.

Its compact form and single cable opens up fexible installation options, such as ftting on a rail, inside the roof lining, anywhere inside or outside on the fybridge. YB3i is powered from a 9V-30V DC supply but should external power be cut, it can run for about two weeks thanks to the internal battery back-up. YB3i also offers potential for M2M communication, which allows users to

send data from on-board equipment, such as engines or chartplotters, back to shore. Sister company Rock Seven also offers an M2M communication-only device called RockBLOCK, which is designed for users to integrate into their own custom networks and is low-cost. For example, owners can add security functions by linking sensors to a Raspberry Pi or RockBLOCK to send alarms straight to the owner’s mobile phone.

YB Tracking UK company YB Tracking is an Iridium partner offering compact handheld and fxed tracking/communication systems that make use of the Short Burst Data (SBD) service, which is a low-cost, relatively low-bandwidth satcom service suitable for recreational users. The company started off in 2004 offering handheld tracking and communication technology, but in 2014 launched a new, compact fxed Iridium SBD-based boat tracking unit, the YB3i. This gives wireless connectivity so users can connect their own smartphones and tablets to send very low-cost texts from anywhere in the world. in 2010, When FLIR bought the then-financially precarious Raymarine, not only did it rescue one of the world’s best-known boating electronics brands from collapse, it also brought a new dimension in safety-at-sea technology to a boating market that previously had maringal awareness of it – thermal imaging. Now, this is a widely welcomed addition to the array of systems that’s available to any boat owner who wants to be safer at sea, having earned a place alongside the long-established maritime conning technologies of radar and sonar. Few recreational seafarers would question the value of being able to ‘see’ foating debris and barely submerged obstructions in low light that might not otherwise be picked up on the radar by detecting their heat. Light intensifcation technology, such as is used by the armed forces in night operations, is not widely available in the boating market. “Without a doubt, thermal imaging rules the night… and the daytime too,” says Lou Rota, vice president, FLIR Maritime Sales. “Image-intensifying devices are on the decline in the marine

market because they really aren’t wellsuited for the marine environment,” explains. “Image-intensifying devices like Night Vision Goggles (NVGs) are reliant on always having just a little ambient light available for them to amplify and create an image. If there is no light at all, they simply won’t work. They’re also not useful during the day, at dusk, or twilight hours either. At those times there is simply too much light for them and they are overwhelmed. “Thermal imaging, on the other hand, works day or night. Since it sees energy in the infrared spectrum, it is totally immune to the effects of visible light. That means a thermal imager can see right through sun glare as well as in the dark of night. It’s a true 24-hour enhancement. Everything in the marine environment – boats, navigation aids, even icebergs – emits infrared heat. That means it’s all visible to a FLIR thermal imager.”

and maritime frst responders have been relying on thermal imaging for over 40 years,” Lou Rota points out. “Today we are a leading supplier to maritime frstresponder agencies such as coast guards, ocean rescue, wildlife and conservation, enforcement and other similar agencies. Thermal imaging makes their jobs safer, easier, and more effective,” he asserts. “In the commercial marine space we’re also seeing keen interest in thermal imaging from many cruise ship lines. Not only do they use the technology for underway navigation and safety, but they are also using it for passenger safety and man-overboard detection.”

nAvigAtion tool After FLIR’s buyout of Raymarine it was no surprise that it was the frst manufacturer of integrated navigational electronics in the boating market to add TI to its product portfolio. Boaters now, Rota says, “love night vision technology, and if they’re venturing out after dusk it’s become a must-have item onboard. Thermal night vision technology dramatically improves situational awareness after dark, and best of all it is simple to use. As a safety device it’s unmatched for spotting hazards, foating debris, unlit small craft, and even people in the water. Thermal night vision technology is also now more affordable than ever before, so we see it appearing on more and more vessels every day. “Thermal imaging is no longer an add-on or an afterthought. Along with lower prices have come developments in TI technology. “We’ve made advances in the sensitivity of our sensors and the quality of our optics,” Rota points out. “These work in tandem to deliver image quality far superior to anything from even just a few years ago,” he notes, adding that FLIR ONE, along with other new products in the

Garage door opening system with double movement, translation and rotation The system allows the door to open downwards, turning it into a bathing platform. This transformation can take place also on boats whose structure would not normally allow the door opening by simply rotating on a pin. The opening device is hydraulically activated and the movements sequence is controlled a built-in electronic unit. The frst translation movement is activated by hydraulic cylinders and the system slides on rails. While the second rotation movement is carried out by means of a hydraulic actuator. The whole system is made of AISI 316L stainless steel and hydraulic pins may be added to the gasket to grant the door water tightness. New car demand  in Europe IBI takes a detailed look at new car sales across europe as a timely indicator of relative market size and current demand trends for big-ticket purchases

EuropEan car SalES conTInuE upwarD TrEnD  European car sales continued to make a comeback  through the end of June, boosted by rising consumer  confdence and pent-up demand across the region.  After a dip in May, sales bounced back strongly and  rose almost 15% in June. Most markets in the European  region showed gains, even Greece.   The reawakening of demand for new cars is  potentially a good harbinger for boat sales. Data from  America’s National Marine Manufacturers Association  going back the past 11 years shows a strong link between  light vehicle sales and powerboat sales, with the two  measures moving largely in sync over the past decade  (although powerboat sales tend to lead in a falling  market, while tending to lag car sales in a recovering  market).  New car sales also provide a proxy of relative  demand for big-ticket purchases and the immediate  effects of economic conditions on consumer confdence  and spending across the EU.   For the frst half of 2015, new car sales were up 8.2%  across EU and EFTA countries (Iceland, Norway and  Switzerland) to a total of 7.1 million units (compared to  6.2 million for the frst half of 2014).  Now at their highest monthly rate in fve and a half  years, car sales have recorded 20 consecutive months of  growth across Europe.  All major markets signifcantly supported the  expansion in June: Spain was up 23.5%, France up 15.0%,  Italy up 14.4%, Germany up 12.9% and the UK up 12.9%.  In Portugal, new car sales saw the region’s biggest  gain during the month with a gain of 33.9%. Only four  countries, including Austria and Finland, posted declines  in June.   Mid-market brands and luxury cars were strong  performers during July. Sales of Mercedes-Benz cars  rose 11% to 369,022 vehicles in the frst half of the year,  outpacing the growth of rivals BMW and Audi, which  grew 7.4% and 4.2% respectively.
