hey say January is the time for fresh starts but as far as I’m concerned, there’s way too much fun to be had at the start of the year for bootcamp and dieting. Alas, as we say a final farewell to the holiday season, it’s time to get serious. This week, the talented Woman’s Day lifestyle team brings you part one of our two-week “A Healthy New You” special, and it turns out looking after ourselves isn’t always such a drag. Case in point… according to our beauty experts, red wine might actually be the secret to amazing skin. Enjoying my favourite tipple and looking younger for it? 2020 is looking good!

! s s o G To KEIRA & BERNARD:

A MATCH MADE IN HEAVEN! W

Love all on the court

hile she’s been spotted getting flirty with a plethora of men recently, Keira Maguire appears to have found The One in none other than tennis bad boy Bernard Tomic! The pair were all over each other at the Australian Open IMG party at Melbourne’s Crown Casino last week. In photos obtained by Woman’s Day, Australian tennis champion Bernard, 27, couldn’t keep his hands off reality TV star Keira, 33, and even leaned in for a kiss as Keira blushed and held onto his arm! “Bernard is a big name and people were watching him, so it was very interesting to see him flirt so openly with her,” a partygoer revealed. “They had their hands all over each other and she was lapping the attention up.” But Keira better watch out. Last year, Woman’s Day uncovered a string of lewd messages Bernard sent to potential suitor Tahlia Green, in which he begged her for a date and threatened to “lock her up” so they could have kids together.

Kate showed off her baby bump in LA.

The flirty couple were all over each other.

KATE: BABY NUMBER 4! ate Hudson is doing nothing to hose down speculation that she’s pregnant with baby number four, stepping out last week with what appears to be a belly bump underneath her flowing green maxidress. The actress, 40, proudly revealed she was close to her goal weight last April, after welcoming daughter Rani six months prior. “Kate worked hard to get her body back after that pregnancy, so her carrying a little extra again all of a sudden can really only

mean one thing,” a friend tells Woman’s Day. Along with Rani – who she welcomed with Danny Fujikawa, her partner of three years – Kate also has son Ryder Robinson, 16, from her relationship with Chris Robinson, and Bingham Bellamy, eight, whose dad is Muse rocker Matthew Bellamy. “Kate often says being a mother eclipses everything else in her life, so it’s no surprise she’s going again, even at 40,” says a friend. “She jokes that [her children] keep her young.”

JULIA & DANNY’S FIGHT TO END ALL FIGHTS

OVER LEONARDO!

s soon as Danny Moder realised that he and wife Julia Roberts were seated with Hollywood hunk Leonardo DiCaprio at Sean Penn’s annual benefit dinner, he saw trouble on the horizon. And sure enough, sources say within minutes of leaving LA’s The Wiltern theatre, Julia and Danny were embroiled in an all-out argument. According to a guest, Julia, 52, spent the evening hanging on to 45-year-old Leo’s every word. “She seemed smitten with him,” says the onlooker. “It was quite awkward to watch as Danny was often left out of their cosy chats. She was

J.LO & A-ROD’S COP MYSTERY our police units were called to Jennifer Lopez and Alex Rodriguez’s Miami mansion last week, and friends are still at a loss to explain why. “It was a pretty dramatic response,” says an onlooker. “But nothing seemed to be happening and the cops didn’t look worried.” Adds a friend, “J.Lo and A-Rod weren’t home at the time, they were in Los Angeles. It was probably just a tripped security alarm and the cops rushed over. The couple weren’t home “You can never be too careful as when the there are some bad areas of police came. throwing down that dazzling smile to Leo the entire time, while Danny looked like the third wheel on Julia and Leo’s date night!” And we’re told the 50-yearold cameraman said as much during their 30-minute drive home to their Malibu mansion. “At first Danny tried to raise the subject gently but, as Julia often does, she ignored his concerns,” says a source. “It hit a nerve with Danny, and he went ballistic about how she humiliated him at a time when half the US tabloids are speculating she’s divorcing him. I’d bet they slept in separate bedrooms that night.”

Sad + lonely in LA

MARGOT: RINGLESS & HEARTBROKEN ith puffy eyes and a downcast look, Margot Robbie – without her wedding ring – was hustled into a limousine in Los Angeles looking for all the world like she’d been bawling her eyes out. And sources suggest that it’s possible all is not well in her three-year marriage to British filmmaker Tom Ackerley. “She definitely looked worse for wear,” says an onlooker. “It was quite a surprise.” Adds a friend, “Margot is intensely private about her marriage, but it wouldn’t be a surprise if it’s hit a few speed bumps over the past year. When you think about it, she’s been co-starring with Leonardo [DiCaprio], who she was rumoured to have had a fling with a few years back, working with Quentin Tarantino who she positively fawns over and has resumed her very tight friendship with Alexander Skarsgard. You have to admit it’s a lot for even the most laid-back husband to deal with!”

We probably won’t see them for the rest of the night!” Hugh, 59, cheekily described the chemistry between Mary and James as “red hot”. While Matthew revealed his mum is “single and vital”, and added if it doesn’t work out with Hugh’s dad, he only asks that prospective partners are over the age of 85.

The 44-year-old football stud looked transformed at dinner with his wife Victoria and son Brooklyn, after watching the Dior Men fashion show. Friends say David sees a dermatologist and aesthetician regularly, but he may have overdone it this time! Celebrity surgeon Dr Dave David tells Woman’s Day, “David’s eyebrows do harden his face and it’s all due to poorly administered Botox – unless of course that’s the look he’s going for. That ‘angry’ look is due to the placement and amount of Botox. If you notice, it’s mostly his right eye, so they’re asymmetrical. The 31-year-old has held back from naming the day she’s set to marry fiance Edo Mapelli Mozzi yet again after the chaos surrounding Meghan and Harry. This comes after she was forced to wait last year, thanks to her father Prince Andrew’s friendship with Jeffrey Epstein and claims he’d slept with an underage girl, accusations he denies. “Beatrice’s been left out in the cold. POST-BABY SLIMDOWN And the new, improved Meghan doesn’t stop there. She’s lost all her baby weight and then some since welcoming son Archie nine months ago, and even flew in her Pilates instructor from California for private sessions at her Vancouver Island mansion. “You should see her under the winter woollies. She looks sensational,” adds our source. “It’s also rumoured she’s hired a vegan chef at around $50,000 a month to cook her meals.” Despite Meghan’s hard work, we’re told Jessica is urging her to have a few nips and tucks now the royals can’t stonewall her. “Meghan quite fancies the idea of a little Botox, fat-freezing, bee-venom facials and perhaps a boob job. Nothing spectacular, just a little push up after the baby,” says our source.

If Meghan does go down the plastic surgery path, she could be looking at a bill upwards of $1.2 million to fly to Beverly Hills, undergo procedures with the best surgeon money can buy – someone well-paid enough to never spill the beans about what she’s had done – plus a private hospital stay in notoriously expensive Los Angeles, along with security guards to keep watch while she recovers. While she’s plotting her immediate comeback, Meghan also has plenty of moneymaking schemes simmering behind the scenes. “She knows commercialising her and Harry’s Instagram has the potential to make more than $20 million in its first year if they play their cards right and pick the right endorsements, so she’s working on that into the night,” says our source. “Plus she’s collaborating on a fashion line with her pal Misha [Nonoo], which they predict will be worth about $50,000 to her. But that’s more of a passion project for Meghan, who’s always wanted to call herself a fashion designer.”

Royal scandals are causing havoc for Bea and fiance Edo.

Meet the new fab four! At last week’s Buckingham Palace reception for African delegates, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s message to Harry and Meghan was clear – don’t let the door hit you on the way out. It was the future king’s first time holding a state occasion in the place of the Queen, and even though Harry had skipped the country bound for Canada just two hours before, Wills and Kate seemed perfectly happy with the helping hands of Princess Anne and Prince Edward’s wife the Countess of Wessex. “It’s no mistake the Queen and William chose Anne and Sophie for support,” says a palace aide. “Anne is the most reliable royal, and the Queen has a soft spot for Sophie.”

Sophie Wessex and Princess Anne are now the support act.

Celebrity news Cassandra is worried that her daughter is growing up too fast.

Cass isn’t happy that Karl’s wife is styling her daughter as a mini-me or any mother, seeing their teenage daughter forming a close bond with their dad’s much-younger new wife is heartbreaking. But for Cassandra Thorburn, watching her daughter Ava, 14 – who now goes by her middlename Willow – looking glamorous in a two-piece suit sitting front row at the Australian Open with her dad Karl Stefanovic, 45, and her new stepmum Jasmine is particularly tough, given Jasmine is the woman Karl moved on with shortly after walking out on his family in 2016. “Cass hates the thought Ava will be exposed to stuff that’s beyond her years, and the fact Jasmine and Ava have obviously gone shopping together is upsetting,” a close family friend tells. “Cass knows Ava is impressionable and would have loved it, but in

The new hosts are struggling to bring back viewers.

As Karl launched a shocking attack on former Today co-star Richard Reid, calling him “a tosser of the highest order” for revealing he has hair plugs on I’m A Celeb last year, a Nine insider says he should be more concerned with the ailing ratings of his cursed morning show. According to a Nine insider, if the ratings don’t pick up in the next few months, Karl could jump ship when his contract is up in December. And in true Stefanovic fashion, he’s eyeing off a lucrative radio gig. “Karl has had his eye on Alan Jones’ spot at 2GB for a while when, and if, Alan retires,” says the source. “He may even end up on Ben Fordham’s drive spot if they have a reshuffle.” Despite an early ratings boom when Karl and his new co-host Allison Langdon, 40, made their debut, viewing figures have dropped dramatically – hitting a low of 185,000 viewers each day while rival Sunrise is ahead with 246,000 on average. “Today started the year with a bang because of one thing – the bushfires. But the moment they went back to the usual format, very quickly and drastically the numbers dropped,” our insider reveals. The dramatic plunge in ratings has caused Nine bosses to call an emergency crisis meeting, which has left the rest of the Today crew panicking. “TV bosses were hoping the numbers would hover around the 200,000 mark in order to save face for the decisions they’ve made,” a TV insider confides. “They aren’t panicking yet as the real ratings war kicks off in mid-February. They just want to have any issues ironed out so when it really counts they’ll be ready.” WD 19

There’s much more to her than meets the eye, or I wouldn’t love her so much. “There are beautiful girls everywhere. I could have my pick. But for 35 years I’ve only wanted Pamela. She makes me wild, in a good way. She inspires me. I protect her and treat her the way she deserves to be treated.” It’s the fifth marriage for both the Baywatch icon and her new husband, with Pamela’s colourful love-life dominating the headlines ever since she shot to fame. Over the years she’s been married to Motley Crue drummer Tommy Lee, with whom she has two sons, Brandon and Dylan, musician Kid Rock, along with being wed twice to poker player Rick Salomon. Most recently she lived in France with soccer player Adil Rami. Their two-year

I knew she’d be a big star,” he said. “We ended up living together. Hefner loved her and saw her beauty. I tried to talk her out of doing Playboy… she wanted to do it and she went on to do 13 covers.” To celebrate the marriage, Pammy wrote a touching poem about Jon. “He used to scare me, now I’ve seen more of life and I realise he’s been there all along.”

HAYLEY’S METH HELL! The controversial bride was close to death after a drug addiction stole eight years of her life

he’s set to become one of Married At First Sight’s most-talked about participants thanks to her big personality and no-holdsbarred approach to life. And it’s clear nothing and nobody will faze incoming bride Hayley Vernon, who has lived one very colourful life in her 32 years. Speaking exclusively to Woman’s Day, a close friend of the brunette beauty tells all about the reality star’s debilitating drug habit and the circumstances that have shaped her life so far.

DARK TIMES One of Hayley’s closest friends, who has asked to remain anonymous, reveals the former financial broker is lucky to be alive. “We’re talking about someone who managed to survive an eight-year long meth habit,” says the friend. “This habit saw her live in 15 houses over that period. Hayley got through some seriously dark situations thanks to her strong-mindedness. “She’s been around the block, and I assure everyone, even a stint on Australia’s biggest 26 WD

television show won’t be enough to stop Hayley being herself,” the source quips. “After surviving some pretty awful stuff over the years, she is making the most of a second chance at life – she’s bubbly, outspoken, enthusiastic about everything and totally uncensored in what she says.” It’s a far cry from Hayley’s life as a teenager. At 16, the impressionable teen started smoking marijuana, a habit that within a year had morphed into extensive amphetamine use.

‘She is making the most of a second chance at life’ “This was unacceptable to her single mum, who promptly kicked her out of home,” her friend explains. “It was a really tough time for her. Her mum was dealing with mental illness, so Hayley was trying to look out for her little sister from afar, and at roughly the same time, a close family friend died. Her world just imploded.”

According to her friend, the pressure pushed Hayley into more serious drugs, particularly ice. “She used it initially to numb her emotions, but then it became something she couldn’t control. A few of us tried to get her away from it over the years, but she was a high-functioning addict who seemed to be holding it together,” she adds. At one of Hayley’s lowest periods, one of her bosses agreed to pay for her rehab. “She made good money in finance, where she had the gift of the gab, but she was always off her tree! Despite holding down good jobs, Hayley’s bank account was always empty, because her $800-a-week habit was sucking her dry,” says the friend, who insists the vivacious brunette was forced to live in shared accommodation with strangers. “At one point she was stealing clothing and food, and selling them to other addicts and with the money she made, she would eat – and so would the dog!”

This worked for a while “until it didn’t”, at which point the former account executive suffered a complete breakdown. Thankfully for Hayley, a group of women in the fitness industry turned her life around. She befriended a trainer, who set her on the path to a healthier lifestyle. “Hayley has been drug-free for several years now and I’m really proud that she was able to dig herself out of the really deep hole.”

He came off stage and collapsed and there was no pulse, there was no breathing,” he said during an interview outside Westmead Hospital.

Anthony thanked drummer Steve Pace and team member Kim Antonelli for administering CPR, and nurse Grace Jones, who used a defibrillator on Greg three times before he was rushed to hospital, where he underwent emergency surgery. “They saved his life,” Paul Field, Anthony’s brother told, adding that Greg had stopped breathing a number of times.

KERR FAMI

Miranda’s heartbroken her brother’s marriage has ended and Nanna Kerr’s Kitchen is no more

Forever didn’t last Matt (left) and James opened Nanna Kerr’s Kitchen in 2015.

ust like his famous sister, model Miranda Kerr, Matt Kerr opted for a beautiful backyard wedding surrounded by friends and family when he tied the knot with husband James. But while Miranda, 36, is happily about to welcome her third child with her billionaire husband, Snapchat CEO Evan Spiegel, her younger brother hasn’t been so lucky in love. In a shocking turn of events Matt, 33, has split from his husband James, 41, and heartbroken Matt has returned to working with his famous family after leaving their dream restaurant business, Nanna Kerr’s Kitchen – named after Matt’s beloved grandma Ann. Since then his estranged husband’s company has gone bust and James is struggling to pay off his mounting debts.

BANKRUPTCY Speaking exclusively with Woman’s Day, James confirms the pair went their separate ways at the end of 2018, adding that since then he has been left with no choice than to go bankrupt and kiss goodbye to his life savings as his company goes into liquidation. “The split was very hard – Matt left the relationship and the business. I have had to declare bankruptcy,” confirms James. 32 WD

In December 2016 Matt and James tied the knot in front of 280 friends in the grounds of Leaflee, their B&B property in the NSW Hunter Valley. Matt’s mum Therese Kerr officiated the wedding and Miranda was by their side taking the role as chief “groomsmaid”. “Our faces ached from smiling and our hearts were bursting with love and excitement for what we’d achieved and what was still to come,” Matt said at the time. A few months earlier, James had funded the pair’s restaurant venture, selling his property and using the last of his savings as the $800,000 equity. To begin with, the business flourished, as did the newlyweds, who were working hard to build something for their future. “It was always implied that it was the Kerr fortune that was bankrolling the restaurant,” says a friend. “The local community, the media, the customers certainly believed that, and the boys played along with that perception because it was good for business.” But despite appearances, billionaire Miranda – who with her husband Evan is worth an estimated $4.4 billion – and the rest of her family never had any involvement. SHOCKS & SECRET

It was the bar where everyone knew your name, but behind the scenes the cast kept plenty of dramas hidden… THE SHOW WAS ALMOST CANCELLED AFTER ONE SEASON

When Cheers premiered in 1982, the sitcom aired to virtually nobody. In fact, it was ranked 74th out of 77 shows in its timeslot. However, NBC’s entertainment president at the time, Brandon Tartikoff, realised its potential and swooped in to save it. The show would ultimately run for 11 seasons – 275 episodes! – and score a record 111 Emmy nominations, with 28 wins.

KELSEY STRUGGLED WITH DRUG ADDICTION

While it looked like on screen Kelsey Grammer – whose character Frasier Crane was so popular a spin-off series was created around him – was thriving, the actor was struggling with a crippling substance addiction. He was arrested in 1988 and 1990 for cocaine possession and was admitted to rehab, a decision he said had little effect on his life. “I went and did some things [rehab], and then of course my life didn’t change that much,” he said. Kelsey even admitted to drinking heavily before taping the show. “One time I went out for a few cocktails before we shot and my words were slurred. I feel forever apologetic about that.” 34 WD

The cast gave us plenty of laughs – and tears – over 11 seasons.

Nicholas’ sudden death was also acknowledged on the show.

DIVA SHELLEY WAS THE MOST UNPOPULAR CASTMATE While a huge star at the time, Shelley Long’s diva antics rubbed the cast and writers the wrong way. “She believed she was the new Lucille Ball,” an insider reveals. “She would spend hours after the run-through talking with the writers about her character and story, just talking it to death.” Even Ted Danson, whose character Sam Malone had a love-hate relationship with Shelley’s Diane Chambers, expressed his distaste for the actress off camera. “I had trouble hanging around her until we stood on stage together,” he once remarked.

SHELLEY TRIED TO GET KELSEY FIRED Look out, Kelsey, Shelley’s up to something!

In his 1995 autobiography So Far, Kelsey wrote in detail the lengths Shelley would go to get him booted off the show. “Shelley’s efforts to get me off the show were relentless,” he wrote. “I learned after read-throughs she would insist the writers took out every joke I had.” Shelley has adamantly denied the allegations ever since the book was released.

THE CAST WERE IN DENIAL ABOUT ‘COACH’ NICHOLAS’ AILING HEALTH In the third season, actor Nicholas Colasanto’s heart condition – which had been diagnosed in the mid-70s – worsened dramatically. He was losing a lot of weight and had trouble breathing during filming. Shortly before the season wrapped, Nicholas was hospitalised with fluid on his lungs. He was never cleared to return to work but when he visited the set one day, the cast were shocked. “I think we were all in denial,” Shelley said at the time. “We were glad he was there, but he lost a lot of weight.” Rhea Perlman, who played Carla Tortelli, added, “He wanted to be there so badly. He couldn’t breathe well. It was hard.” Nicholas, 61, died of a heart attack in February 1985.

THE CAST TOOK PHOTOS OF EACH OTHER SHOWERING NAKED! Stories of cast members running amok on set are almost expected when you hear about TV gossip. However, the Cheers gang took things to the next level. Kirstie Alley, who played Rebecca Howe, revealed that the cast played a game where the aim was to get full-frontal pictures of other actors while

Kirstie snapped Ted in his birthday suit!

they showered! “The big game became getting the door open so that you could take pictures of nude people,” she said. “I have the greatest picture of Ted… there was one person opening the door with a butter knife... He’s totally nude and he’s really well-endowed.”

TED HAD AN AFFAIR WITH WHOOPI GOLDBERG While he played flirty ex-ballplayer Sam on the show, Ted was also womanising off-camera – with none other than Whoopi. At the time, he was raising his two daughters with his second wife, Cassandra Coates. However, his affair ended after he appeared in black face at an awards ceremony honouring Whoopi in 1993. Cassandra filed for divorce – it reportedly cost Ted a whopping $30 million. WD 35

‘PLEASE DON’T FORGET US’ The Tregellas know they’re lucky their home escaped the inferno.

After seeing her town burn to the ground, plucky youngster Jessica is determined to help rebuild her happy place

t a time when many Aussie kids are heading back to school after their fun-filled holidays, young Mallacoota student Jessica Tregellas carries the weight of the world on her shoulders. Cutting a lonely figure among the charred remains of what was once her school community garden and chicken coop, she’s one of the many innocent children who endured the trauma of the new year bushfires. But while she has seen and been through more anguish and heartbreak than most adults will experience in a lifetime, this feisty grade sixer from Victoria’s East Gippsland region has no time for wallowing in self-pity. For this stoic and spirited youngster, her one mission is to

make her beloved hometown shine once again. “I’ve never been so scared – we were running for our lives. Dad made us practise the getaway but nothing prepares you for when it actually happens. “Mum screamed, ‘We have to run!’ The sky was a yucky black colour that turned to blood-red and the embers were flying all around us. I couldn’t stop shaking – it was worse than any horror film – and for weeks I had awful nightmares, but they’ve stopped now.

REBUILDING “I’m excited to get back to school and we can start to rebuild our community garden, and welcome a family of chickens to their new home!”

Jess says. “We lost about eight in the fire and I think we should name one of them Bushy and make something that was really bad into something positive,” the 12-year-old tells Woman’s Day.

For Cate, it was a conversation with her three girls that night that brought tears to her eyes. “Emily and Sarah started plotting ways to help when this was over. Jess chipped in and said her focus would be the school. “Her plan is for all 126 students, from prep to Grade 12 at Mallacoota College plant a tree and rebuild the kitchen garden, plus a house for the chickens, and watch their little school grow back one day at a time. “I looked at my girls and have never felt more proud – this

It was a place where spirits could not be broken.

planet is in good hands as it happens,” she adds. A month after the raging fires ripped their community to shreds, one blessing for Mallacoota is that no lives were lost. With a population of 1000 that skyrockets over the summer months, when thousands of tourists flock to the area, this normally vibrant town is exhausted, though relief, not grief, is the order of play. Roads into and out of the

once shining jewel are beginning to reopen, with many locals returning to find their homes burned to the ground. Young Jess now worries for her school buddies, sharing one mate’s tragic story that would break the hardest of hearts. “I don’t want to say her name because she isn’t back in town yet – but she knows her house is gone. She has only what possessions her family got out when they evacuated. The most amazing thing is she still managed to find a positive side saying at least now she doesn’t have to clean her bedroom any more,” Jess says, smiling. “Our house was saved by our neighbours, the local post master Pam, and another local, Monica. We’re so grateful. “The four goldfish didn’t make it but at least they know we tried. My two horses Romeo and Buddy survived. With so many animals lost, when I finish school I want to be a wildlife worker or a vet. “I was born in the back of an ambulance on the side of a bush road up here 12 years ago – this is my hometown so please don’t forget us. Come for a visit and I’ll take you to my favourite beach, Bastion Point – minus the smoke and the embers!”

Mum-of-eight Kim knows she’s going to have a lot of lunchboxes to fill!

Woma n’s Day

LOOK OUT, KINDY! THE QUINS ARE OFF TO SCHOOL! Four years ago we met the Tucci tribe, and now with their satchels packed, the little ones are ready for their first big adventure

hey’re the one-in-55 million babies and it seems like only yesterday that supermum Kim Tucci gave birth to non-identical quintuplets Keith, Alison, Penelope, Tiffany and Beatrix. The team at Woman’s Day were overjoyed to announce the arrival of five little bundles of joy to the world on January 28, 2016, and since then we’ve lovingly watched them grow up – celebrating with them every milestone. And now, four years on, the fabulous five are about to head off to school! “It’s crazy,” says busy mum Kim, who already has a son Kurt, 12, from a previous relationship as well as eightyear-old Aiva and her little sister Indiana, six, with the quins’ dad Vaughn.

T

‘Time has gone so quickly – the weeks pass in the blink of an eye’ “Time has gone so quickly – the weeks pass in the blink of an eye,” Kim adds. “Maybe it’s because someone always needs something from me. There’s not a moment when one of this kids isn’t asking for food, or a toilet run. I just have no time to sit back and absorb it all.”

TAKING ITS TOLL

five youngsters so excited to be starting the next adventure of their young lives.

GROWN UP The quins will start school in southern Perth, at Montessori Rockingham, next week and Kim, 30, isn’t quite sure how she’s going to handle it. “I think I’m going to be overwhelmed, but I’d be surprised if I cried,” Kim says with a chuckle. “I’m ready for the next stage and I think they are, too. “I can’t believe how time has crept up on us. When I put them together in their new uniforms, they look like little people now, not babies or toddlers. I can’t stop looking at them.” They may still be little people, but the Tucci quins sure know how to eat – and Kim will have her work cut out for her making lunches every day. A typical week sees them chow through 14 loaves of bread, a kilogram of cheese, 21 litres of milk, three large boxes of Weet-Bix and 84 pieces of fruit. “And if I want to feed them a treat on the weekend, I have to buy something like 16 doughnuts for the one sitting,” laments the young mum. “I’m going to have to put some careful planning into how much is required in

In 2016, Kim gave birth to Australia’s first ever naturally conceived quins. their school lunchboxes.” Kim, who has about 400,000 social media followers after starting her Surprised By Five blog shortly before the kids were born, says each of her quins will bring something special to the classroom. “Ali is the pack leader and good at organising her brother and sisters,” says Kim. “She’s super smart and my most demanding child, but she’s very affectionate. “Keith is the most emotional and cries over everything, but he’s very kind and makes sure his sisters go first, with everything. Whereas Beatrix is the princess of the group – she has me wrapped around her little finger. She’s very mature, and I love her confidence. “Tiffany is ‘T’, for trouble. She tries to be good but is impulsive.

She always wants to help me around the house, which is lovely, but you don’t want to taste her temper. “And last but not least, little Penny is beautiful. She’s overwhelmed by the noise and drama of being in such a large family, so I’ve booked her into a class separate from her siblings.” With all eight kids in school, Kim says she wants to use her time to take on more work and immerse herself in the launch of her new book, a handbook on parenting. “I’ve always wanted more than just parenting in my life,” says Kim. “So it’s fair to say that all of us are looking forward to this next chapter.”

It’s understandable how the years have all rolled into one for Kim, and while she’s experienced such happy times, life has dished a few blows, too. Sadly, last year Kim and Vaughn, 36, decided to separate. The tired parents’ relationship hit the rocks when they became too stressed and exhausted to put time into themselves as a couple. It took its toll and both received treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder. And while Vaughn still sees his beloved kids regularly and Kim raises her eight kids as a single mum, both are overjoyed, if not a little apprehensive, to see their

here’s no time limit on grief, and the senseless and violent murder of nine-year-old schoolgirl Keyra Steinhardt plunged her mother Treasa so deeply into depression that she nearly didn’t make it back. “It nearly destroyed me,” says the 54-year-old. “When a loved one is murdered, their future, their hopes, their dreams are stolen. “I’ll never get over what happened but I have learned to live with it.” On April 22, 1999, Keyra was killed by Leonard John Fraser while she was walking home from school in North Rockhampton. He was jailed for life. But Treasa’s pain was too much. The only thing that kept her alive was her son Connor, two, with Keyra’s stepfather Blair. Grief-stricken, she felt Connor would be better off without her. “In my mind, I’d failed to keep Keyra safe. So how could I keep Connor safe?” she says. Ultimately, she decided to leave Rockhampton to escape. “I told Connor I had to go away. He was only four and didn’t understand. My partner at the time and family thought I was abandoning him but it was the only way I could survive,” Treasa says. She drove to Melbourne, for a complete change of scene, and got a job in a supermarket. Although she sought out counselling, it was in vain. “My way of coping was extreme but I was surviving,” she says of her new life. Back in Rockhampton, detectives focused on the deaths of Beverley Leggo, Sylvia Benedetti and Julie Turner, whose murders were also linked to Fraser. Convicted of Beverley and Sylvia’s murder, and Julie’s manslaughter, he was given an indefinite life sentence. After almost six years Treasa returned to Queensland to

She gradually restored her relationship with Connor but just as her life was getting back on track, on New Year’s Day 2007, Fraser died of a heart attack and Treasa felt cheated.

‘I wanted him to be in prison for the rest of his life’ “ wan ante t d him to be inn priiso sonn for the rest of his life, like I had to be without my daughter for the rest of my life,” she says. A friend in Vancouver, Canada, offered her a job for a year as nanny to his

With her confidence restored, she returned to Rockhampton. “I didn’t regret leaving. If I hadn’t done what I did, Connor would no longer have a mother. I did regret it had taken me almost 10 years to find my way back, though.” The pair reconnected aand Connor, 22, and TTreasa are best friends. “We work for the ssame company and bbought a house ttogether,” she says. Yet while she describes herself as a mostly happy person, there are dark days. “Fraser stole my daughter’s future and the life I should have had. I can’t get

PROTEIN POWDERS

Supercharge your smoothie like model Valentina Zelyaeva.

Everyone’s talking about them, but what are they made from and are they right for you?

HEMP

Hemp seeds are one of nature’s best sources for plant-based protein. “Unlike most plantbased varieties, hemp protein contains all of the essential amino acids your body requires each day, but it’s still not considered “complete” due to low levels of lysine and leucine,” says dietitian Melanie McGrice. BEST FOR... Anyone following a strict vegan or vegetarian diet, or those intolerant to lactose. BENEFITS “Rich in omega-3 fatty acids and several essential amino acids, it’s an easily digestible plant-based alternative,” says Melanie.

PEA

This plant-based protein is made from split peas, and should be used as an extra source of protein rather than a complete meal replacement. BEST FOR... Any time you want to slim down or if you have diabetes. It’s also suitable for vegetarians, vegans and people with dairy and egg allergies. BENEFITS Pea protein contains fibre as well as arginine, an amino acid the body needs to build muscle. “Pea protein is particularly beneficial for maintaining health blood glucose levels in people with diabetes,” says Melanie.

WHEY

Whey is the most readily available protein powder. It provides high levels of essential amino acids. “It’s the waste product from cheese-making... [it] contains lactose, a milk sugar that can cause bloating and digestive discomfort,” advises Melanie. BEST FOR... “Anyone without allergies or intolerances if you want to boost muscle mass and strength,” she says. BENEFITS Whey is high in leucine, which plays a major role in promoting muscle growth and repair. It’s also been linked to reduced appetite.

BROWN RICE

Brown rice protein doesn’t contain all of the essential amino acids, which is why it’s often blended with pea, quinoa or chia protein. BEST FOR... Promoting muscle repair. “It’s an excellent option for athletes or those with allergies and intolerances to cow’s milk, legumes and eggs,” says Melanie. BENEFITS Gluten-free and easy to digest, brown rice protein is an excellent source of dietary fibre and has been linked with increased weight loss, improved liver function, low cholesterol levels and better heart and kidney health.

CASEIN

Like whey, casein is a high-quality animal protein that comes from cow’s milk but is digested and absorbed much slower. BEST FOR... “Casein protein may increase satiety, making it a better choice for those who are trying to lose weight,” says Melanie. BENEFITS In addition to being excellent for burning fat, casein is a rich source of calcium and phosphorous, which are both essential for bone health. Always speak to a dietitian or GP before including protein powders in your diet.

Make sure you stop eating by 9pm every night so you can let your body properly digest. If you can, even try intermittent fasting, whereby you restrict your eating to a nine-hour window each day to help boost your metabolic rate and encourage weight loss due to the reduction of your calorie intake.

DON’T GO LOW-FAT

Low fat products like salad dressings and yoghurt actually contain far more sugar and sodium than their regular counterparts to make up for the lack of flavour. But eat anything full fat – including butter, milk and cheese – in small portions.

DOWNSIZE YOUR WARM YOUR WATER TABLEWARE An ice-cold glass of H2O is refreshing, especially in the warmer months, but it turns out drinking your water warm keeps you feeling fuller for longer so you’re less prone to snack.

Start sprinkling more turmeric in your cooking. The spice is known for its anti-inflammatory effects in the body’s fat cells. It can also improve symptoms of arthritis and autoimmune issues.

✦ 2 garlic cloves, crushed ✦ ¼ cup kecap manis ✦ 2 tsp sesame oil ✦ 1 tbsp finely grated ginger ✦ 10cm stalk fresh lemongrass, white part only, finely chopped ✦ 1/3 cup lime juice ✦ ¾ cup dry-roasted peanuts, coarsely chopped

If your dinner plate is 30cm wide, swap to something around 25cm. It’s only a small amount, but by doing so it means you’re filling your plate with less and saving around 500 calories!

LIQUID LUNCH

Eating a soup for one meal a day can help keep your calorie count down –as long as it’s packed with vegies and wholegrains, not cream!

✦ 750g zucchini ✦ 1 bunch green kale, leaves torn into small pieces (cut out tough centre vein and discard) ✦ 1 tbsp peanut oil ✦ ½ cup fresh mint leaves ✦ 1 tbsp white sesame seeds, toasted

Available in leading pharmacies. Compiled by Gabriella Del Grande.

1 Place garlic, kecap manis, sesame oil, ginger, lemon grass, juice and half the peanuts into a small food processor. Process until well combined. 2 Using a vegetable spiraliser, cut zucchini into thick noodles. 3 Combine kale and peanut oil in a large bowl. Using your hands, massage the oil into the kale to soften. Add zucchini, half the mint and half the dressing to kale; toss gently to combine. 4 Divide salad among plates; drizzle with remaining dressing. Serve with remaining peanuts and mint. Top with sesame seeds.

Always read the label. Use only as directed. If symptoms persist see your healthcare professional. *Reference: In one study of 10 healthy volunteers, the time it took for 50% of the bruise to be absorbed was 2.1 days for Hirudoid and 4 days for the inactive cream. JULES’ HEALTH TIPS

FEEL FITTER THAN EVER!

Words: Amber Bramble, Gabriella Del Grande.

Newlywed MAFS star Jules Robinson reveals how she shed 9kg usy doesn’t even begin to describe the past few months for Married At First Sight star Jules Robinson. Not only did she tie the knot with her onscreen hubby Cam Merchant in their second – and this time real! – November wedding ceremony, she’s also completely overhauled her health, too. Tired of the usual yoyo diets, Jules signed up with WW (the

B

new Weight Watchers) in a bid to lose a few kilograms before her big day. She’s now lost 9kg, and gained a healthy new lifestyle in the bargain! “WW has changed my life because it is really teaching me sustainability for my health for the future,” says Jules, who follows the Purple eating plan – one of three customised options available on the new myWW program. Jules says the workshops and coaching sessions mean she hasn’t had to do it alone. “I like listening to other people’s stories and everyone gets congratulated on their achievements,” she says. “I think the best tip my coach Jules found she was able to has given me is shed pre-wed weight “really easily” under a plan. [not to] be too hard

on myself. That’s no way to live your life.” Here, Jules opens up about how WW has changed her life...

What made you decide to sign up with WW? I joined to lose weight in the lead-up to my wedding so that I could look and feel my best, but also to develop healthy habits for the future, especially as I look to start a family soon. I chose WW because it’s a lifestyle, not a diet.

Had you tried many diets before? I’ve yoyo dieted for years, which caused my weight to fluctuate. With diets I’ve tried in the past, I’ve been restricted in what I could do and where I could go to socialise because of the things I wasn’t allowed to eat, which wasn’t realistic long-term.

Did you change your approach to eating ahead of your wedding? The myWW program has definitely made me more mindful about my choices and about balance, but as long as it falls within my SmartPoints® budget, I can still enjoy any food or drink. As it’s customised to suit my food preferences and lifestyle, I’ve been eating more of the things I love, including carbs like wholemeal pasta!

Are there any new foods you’ve discovered? On my customised plan there are over 300 ZeroPoint™ foods that I don’t have to track, including things like chicken, potatoes, brown rice, vegies and fruits – even wholemeal pasta and grains. I cook loads of

Take your pick from these trim and toned celeb-eating plans ELSA PATAKY – MEDITERRANEAN Rather than following some of the Hollywood health fads that come and go, Elsa – who’s married to Aussie hunk Chris Hemsworth – sticks to the simple, clean eating of the Mediterranean diet. “I don’t believe anything about diets, like quick diets. Those miracles don’t exist,” the Spanish star told Sunrise recently. “[I eat] Mediterranean food every day, not just [for] periods of time.” Think vegetables, fruits, legumes, whole grains, nuts, seeds and olive oil.

JESSICA BIEL – PALEO Wondering how Jess stays so toned? Well, the actress and mum follows the paleo way of eating, which excludes gluten, dairy, alcohol, sugar, legumes and processed foods. “I just feel better when I don’t have gluten or wheat or dairy,” she told the Los Angeles Times. “My digestion is better. I have more energy. I just try to eat really healthy. Jess is also a big fan of growing her own organic goodies in her garden, but treats herself, too. “Of course, I have cheat days and will go out and have cookies and pizza,” she says.

Lovebirds Jules and Cam haven’t had to change their lifestyle too much thanks to WW’s easy approach.

How do you stay active? Does your husband Cam follow the program as well? Cam isn’t a member but he’s been loving the WW meals I’ve been cooking! The beauty of myWW is that it’s all food you would normally eat in your everyday life, so it’s really easy for Cam and I to sit down and enjoy them together – he definitely has more pasta than me though! He eats so much, that man!

I do two sessions a week with my personal trainer Nat, including lots of weights and boxing, and I do at least three gym classes a week at Fitness First. Body pump, Body Attack, spinning and yoga are my go-tos. I’m loving feeling so much stronger and my stamina is growing every week.

JENNIFER ANISTON – INTERMITTENT FASTING She’s looking damn fine at 50, and Jennifer credits her fab physique to fasting. “I do intermittent fasting, so there’s no food in the morning,” the Morning Wars star explains. “I noticed a big difference in going without solid food for 16 hours.” It might sound like a long time to go without some tucker, but Jen suggests fasting from after you’ve eaten dinner to the time you eat breakfast in the morning. “Fortunately, your sleeping hours are counted as paart of the fasting period,” Always s told Radio Times. “[I] she consult your health professional just have to delay breakfast until 10 am.” before changing your diet. How does resveratrol skincare differ from just drinking wine? “Resveratrol is found in the skin and seeds of [all] red grapes, however it is the particularly high concentration of resveratrol that is found in muscadine grapes or malbec that leads us to using these as a source for our [skincare],” Chanel explains. “By consuming red wine (in moderation) you will receive some benefits of polyphenols (resveratrol), however this isn’t the best way for your body to absorb and use the ingredient for skin health,” she says. 60 WD

What exactly are its benefits? “Resveratrol has been shown to significantly improve the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, firmness, elasticity and radiance,” Chanel explains. “The best way to reap its benefits is to look for skincare products that utilise it as an active ingredient... A great way to start is with our Wine Oil [see number 3 below], a deeply nourishing grape seed oil base that is anti-inflammatory, super moisturising [and helps to] repair damage, improve elasticity and increase radiance.”

1

So, where should resveratrol sit in our skincare routine? The important thing is the amount of time you leave the formulas to sink in for. “Longer exposure time to the benefits of the ingredients gives better he also results,” says Chanel. Sh recommends reaching for formulas that pair resveeratrol with other anti-ageing superstars. “I believe [the ingredient is] especially effective when combined with other antioxidants to give you a wellrounded skincare system [that will] do the work to repair your skin,” she explains.

Find magic in Woman’s Day’s ELISE WILSON goes off the beaten track to discover Southeast Asia’s hidden ggem magine Thailand before the crowds and tourist traps. In visiting Myanmar, I was quick to learn why so many of those travel websites describe it as unmissable. Through 10 days of sailing, trekking and sashaying around the most stunning shrines in the world, I fell head over heels...

I

adventure in the Mergui Archipelago – a collection of 800 pristine white-sand desert islands off the southern coast of Myanmar. We boarded a private speedboat from Kawthaung jetty (making me feel like an absolute celebrity on my birthday, no less!) It was about two and a half hours to get to where we were staying, at the super-luxe Awei Pila Resort. After a good two days of If you’ve ever envisioned travelling, I was ready to start yourself as Robinson Crusoe my “barefoot luxury” on a desert island, this Shwedagon is as close as you get! the entire island and snorkelled the reefs and hidden beaches.

THE BIG SMOKE

By day five, we were back in Yangon, the largest city in Myanmar. First up was a fascinating walking tour led by a member of the Yangon Heritage Trust, a non-profit group working to preserve colonial-era buildings. After lunch we boarded the Elephant Coach, which is a very fancy transformed 1940s Chevrolet bus. It took us through the colonial architecture of Yangon downtown and onto the piece de resistance – Shwedagon Pagoda, Yangon’s most famous landmark. It’s adorned with 99-metrehigh gold-plated shrines and diamond studded spires set on top of a hill and is Myanmar’s most important Buddhist pilgrimage site. It’s also easily one oof the most amazing sightts I’ve ever laid eyes upon.

L LUXURY ON THE LAKE

On day six, we flew from Yangon to Heho airport to start a scenic one-hour

drive to Nyaungshwe, the gateway village to Inle Lake. We boarded cute wooden speedboats (luggage and all) and set off to visit rural workshops that made handcrafted umbrellas, followed by a delicious lunch at Viewpoint restaurant, dubbed the best Shan food in the country. I can confirm, it was bloody good! Next was a late afternoon cruise on traditional longtail boats through Inle’s floating villages, sipping local wine while the Inle Canoe Ladies (look them up!) rowed. It was stunning, and equally were my rooms at the Villa Inle Boutique Resort and luxurious Sofitel Inle Lake Myat Min. This trip was made possible thanks to Memories Group (memoriesgroup.com) and Thai Airways.

Roxy didn’t suffer AMANDA SAYS Roxy shows me she has passed away. She says she and her brother Max got out. Roxy liked to escape but she always came home. She shows me they went to a very familiar bush area, as that’s where they always walked with their owner Elizabeth. Roxy then shows me she was being chased by something, possibly a fox, and she got caught in a drain and it was too steep for her to climb. It was quick and she didn’t suffer. Roxy has been with the family since she was a puppy, and she was 12-and-a-half when she passed. She knew Elizabeth had searched for her. Editor’s M pick!

In a cross between Man v Food and Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives, world-renowned chef and culinary mad-scientist Heston Blumenthal attempts to outdo his creativity (if that’s possible?) by going supersized. Playing a warped version of Willy Wonka, Heston creates gigantic versions of some of the most well-known and loved foods, such as a traditional fry-up breakfast and a giant tea and biscuit – and it wouldn’t be Heston without a dash of childlike wonder and excitement along the way.

T

Why on earth are you putting yourself through this again? Because I’m crazy! [Laughs] I love the game. It’s so interesting, so challenging and so me. After I received the call to come back I didn’t want to miss out – it was literally the fear of missing out. What was your training regimen to get back into shape? I was swimming around three times a week, I did a lot of upper body strength work in the gym, did some Pilates. I was just hoping there would be lots of water games this time around. After sensationally blindsiding Lydia Lassila last time, are you nervous about her coming back? You know Lydia and I got on well... outside the game. But I 82 WD

know she’s definitely coming back for revenge [laughs]. I have to watch out for her. I got a fair bit of flack when I voted her out the first time around – people would ask me why I had gotten rid of her because she’s so good and I’d be like, “Exactly, she’s too good!” Having won this game before, did people treat you differently? They were very respectful. It was different from last time because they had underestimated me – they made assumptions because I was an older woman and I wasn’t sleek and svelte, and I didn’t look like I was athletic. I wasn’t wearing a bikini and I reminded them of their mother! What did you think of Pia Miranda winning the recent series? Pia came out of Janine’s shadow a bit, [but] she had

actually done a lot more game play than I think the other players realised. Did you find any similarities between your win and Pia’s? A lot of people think that Survivor is about muscularity – but it’s not all about that. That’s why the tagline is outplay. We were the dark horses, absolutely. What would you do if you won again? I’d love to help my kids out – my kids all have young children. It’d be nice to be able to alleviate some of the pressure off them. Another half a million, that’d be nice!
