Dear friend, In just a matter of months, our lives changed in so many ways. We’re in the midst of a pandemic and are adjusting to a “new normal.” We also are once again living in a time of civil unrest in our country, and working tirelessly toward unity, peace and justice for all.

While we each search for how we will respond during this pivotal time in our history, one truth is universal for everyone at Cook Children’s: we will continue to care for every child who needs us and is counting on us.

Although this has been a uniquely challenging time for all of us, I write this letter with hope for our future.

Every day I get to witness the dedicated, loving and compassionate people who care for the remarkable children we are privileged to serve. Our health care teams are united like never before to serve these children and our community.

The dedication from our staff to keep children and each other safe during a global pandemic remains steadfast. I continue to be impressed by the grace and kindness shown throughout the system at a time when it would be easy to be overcome by fear, stress and exhaustion.

During these unprecedented times, Cook Children’s remains dedicated to staying at the forefront of protecting not only our patients and families, but our employees as well. We are working around the clock to ensure Cook Children’s is responding in the best way we can to the needs of patients, staff, logistics and supplies like vital PPE and COVID-19 testing resources.

One thing we can always count on is the amazing support of our community members who continue to rally on behalf of our patients. As we do not know what tomorrow will bring, we continue to stay fluid. And as the needs of our patients and families change, you continue to answer our call.

In this issue of Promise, we want to give you an inside look at what life has been like at Cook Children’s as we have responded to the international health crisis of COVID-19. You’ll read about the first patient to be treated for COVID-19 at Cook Children’s. We’ll also take you behind the scenes of our command center, where leaders from across the system meet daily to ensure we are as prepared as possible to continue to respond to this pandemic.

Advancing medical care

Our preparation made a difference The first patient to be diagnosed with COVID-19 at Cook Children’s spent six days in the medical center before being discharged in late March. Menachem Mandel received positive test results on March 24, several days after traveling to Fort Worth from Toronto. The 18-year-old returned home to his family in Texas after his school was shut down due to COVID-19.

“I woke up and I didn’t feel sick but I felt a little tired,” said Menachem in a phone interview from his hospital room, prior to his release. “I went to the airport and got my flight. Once on the plane, I started feeling more tired and a little hot. That got me worried.

But when I got home, my temperature was fine.”

The teen said he’d had headaches recently, but he attributed them to the stress of the way the world was changing and not knowing what was going to happen next because of the pandemic.

Several days after arriving home, Menachem came down with a fever. From there, he said his health began to deteriorate.

“Once the fever hit, I started noticing symptoms that I’ve never had before. My muscles felt weak. For

example, I tried turning on a light and it felt weird to do it. It felt like my muscle was disconnected from my body,” Menachem explained. “I was very, very weak. I tried walking back and forth to the bathroom and I was practically falling over.”

Menachem’s parents took him to see Walter Halpenny, M.D., a Cook Children’s pediatrician in Fort Worth. His office, like all Cook Children’s locations, had enacted new procedures to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Staff donning personal protective equipment (PPE) met the family at their vehicle in the parking lot. From there, Menachem was given a mask, and escorted inside where he was carefully examined by Dr. Halpenny and a nurse, also protected by PPE. Dr. Halpenny ordered a full respiratory panel and the Menachem family was sent home to wait for the results. Unfortunately, Menachem began feeling worse overnight.

“I went back home and went to sleep, and when I woke up my temperature was 105,” said Menachem.

“My parents called the doctor and he said to wait it out overnight.”

Advancing medical care

Todd Wolf, M.D., is one of our many doctors providing care out on the front lines. When we opened our doors 102 years ago, we were a formidable force on the front lines of the Spanish flu epidemic.

Today our staff is still on the front lines, and as strong as ever.

That morning, Dr. Halpenny instructed the family to go to Cook Children’s Emergency Department, where a chest X-ray and a CT scan would be performed.

Despite not yet knowing Menachem had COVID-19, emergency room staff at Cook Children’s were prepared for Menachem’s arrival.

“We’ve worked diligently to align ourselves with best practices learned from other institutions that have seen high numbers of COVID-19 patients,” said Corwin Warmink, M.D., medical director of Cook Children’s Emergency Department. “Every step of our operation has been examined to see where we can minimize risk to our patients, families and to our health care workers.”

When Menachem and his family arrived, they were again met by staff dressed in PPE. They were given masks and taken to a special exam room designed for infectious patients.

“We’ve separated our emergency department into areas for patients who may be infectious and those with other complaints, such as injuries,” Dr. Warmink said.

“This patient was identified as high risk immediately and brought straight back to our COVID-19 risk area. All staff wore appropriate PPE throughout the visit as we take no chances with potential COVID-19 exposure.”

At this point, Menachem’s oxygen saturation level was down to 92%. Results of the CT scan were also alarming.

“The CT scan showed patchy pneumonia all over his chest,” said Dr. Halpenny. “It was a little scary to see.”

Doctors in the emergency room determined Menachem needed to be admitted to the hospital. In addition to having a high fever and severe weakness, he was also coughing up blood. Because Menachem screened high risk for COVID-19, he was admitted to a section of the medical center specifically dedicated to treating patients suspected of having the virus.

notified Dr. Halpenny that Menachem was also positive for COVID-19.

At the time, it was almost unheard of in our area to receive COVID-19 test results that quickly. Test results were taking up to 10 days to be returned.

For Menachem, the results were not unexpected.

Before his school in Toronto closed, a cook in the cafeteria had tested positive for the virus.

“I knew in the back of my mind that there was no way I didn’t have it,” said Menachem. “It wasn’t that surprising. There’s just too many ways I could have gotten it.”

After he was admitted, Menachem would spend the next five days on the COVID-19 floor at Cook Children’s, receiving oxygen and other treatments to help his body fight off the illness.

On March 29, Menachem walked out of the medical center with his parents by his side. He had to be isolated at home before returning to a normal routine.

As for Cook Children’s staff, they were relieved to know their preparation was well worth it.

“The biggest takeaway for us is that by preparing, drilling and educating our staff, we are ready to help COVID-19 patients,” said Dr. Warmink. “Successful evaluation and treatment of COVID-19 doesn’t happen

by accident. We’ve spent hundreds of hours planning for these types of events. Cook Children’s is in a fortunate situation to be relatively well supplied and supported for this pandemic.”

Dr. Warmink says COVID-19 is a frightening disease, but with proper planning and supplies, as well as support from the community, we can get through this.

“I can’t emphasize enough to respect social distancing rules and to practice diligent handwashing and avoid touching your face,” said Dr. Warmink.

“These are our best weapons against COVID-19 currently. There is no quick and easy solution, but some painful steps taken now will keep our community from experiencing the nightmare that is occurring in other parts of the country and the world.”

He also adds that health care workers at Cook Children’s are proud to stand ready and prepared in the battle against COVID-19.

“We are the ‘front line’ of this fight, but there is no other place any of us would rather be,” said Dr. Warmink. “This is the profession we chose and we love what we are trained to do.”

What you need to know about multisystem inflammatory syndrome (MIS-C) MIS-C is a rare but serious health condition related to COVID-19 that affects children of all ages. Symptoms of more severe MIS-C cases include severe abdominal pain, shock from low blood pressure, respiratory distress and lethargy. If your child exhibits any of these symptoms, seek emergency medical care immediately.

“We want parents to be aware of these cases as COVID-19 continues to spread in our community,” said Nicholas Rister, M.D., an infectious diseases physician

at Cook Children’s. “Unexplained fevers for several days and evidence of generalized inflammation may be signs of this illness.”

Less severe symptoms include fever, abdominal discomfort and rash. Caregivers should call their pediatrician if these symptoms appear, as they overlap with many other common infections and medical conditions. It is important for these children to be fully evaluated.

Commanding in crisis

Working together to protect As quickly as the COVID-19 pandemic took over our lives, the Cook Children’s Command Center was established. Our leaders were ready to take action, thanks to many long planning sessions and drills through the years to prepare for moments like the one we are currently facing.

On the lower level of the medical center, in rooms that would usually host classes and educational courses for staff, lives our COVID-19 Command Center. The members of this team include staff from across our system, representing many different departments.

The Command Center gathers as a team each morning and throughout the day, but a designated leader is available 24/7 to take phone calls and make decisions throughout the evening and into the morning hours.

Each morning begins with a phone call that consists of representatives from various departments, including Infectious Diseases, Emergency Department, Cook Children’s Physician Network, the laboratory, Human Resources, Communications, Child Life, Security, Facilities, Environmental Safety, Home Health, hospitalists and more.

The COVID-19 Command Center evaluates recent developments, finds procedures for curbing transmission and plans for future concerns. They are constantly in contact

with external partners and stakeholders, including city and state government, neighboring hospitals, and federal agencies, to ensure we have the most up-to-date, important information and work quickly to disseminate that information to our staff.

On any given day, the team reports on a variety of topics, such as the patient census within the medical center, whether everyone has the proper supplies needed and how to safely open up various locations throughout the Cook Children’s system.

The Command Center listens to the needs of employees and then works to meet their needs as quickly and efficiently as possible.

Although they come from various departments and skill sets, the people in the Command Center have worked extremely well together because of a common goal: to protect our staff, our patients and their families.

One of the key people involved in the Command Center is a familiar face. In our spring issue of Promise Magazine, we profiled Kaysey Pollan, director of Environmental Safety and Emergency Management.

At the time, we couldn’t have known just how prescient that choice was as COVID-19 had not yet made its way to the doors of our medical center. But thanks to Cook Children’s staff like Kaysey, we were and are prepared to face this pandemic.

As the world continues to fight the COVID-19 pandemic, there is no greater time to celebrate the care, dedication and compassion that our caregivers provide around the clock. The lifesaving work provided by our nurses did not go unnoticed. A sixth grader sent this sweet note to the nurses of Cook Children’s.

“Dear Nurses of Cook Children’s, Thank you so much for your devotion to children. You are all risking your safety and the safety of your family just so you can make others lives better. It means a lot to so many people of what you are doing. In all ways, y’all are more important than many other people who making up to 10x as much money as you. Y’all are so under payed for the miricles that you work. Agian, I want to than you and tell you that I apreciate all of you! Thank you for your service!”

A new normal Stepping up to shield our own Typically known for creating braces and helmets for young patients, the Orthotics and Prosthetics team at Cook Children’s Home Health turned their talents to help doctors and nurses on the front line of the COVID-19 fight.

Beginning in April, our home health co-workers began making face shields to be used by clinical staff at Cook Children’s who are caring for patients with COVID-19 symptoms.

“We looked at the situation we’re facing, in the community and internally, and thought this is a great opportunity for us to get engaged,” said Cook Children’s Home Health’s Vice President of Operations Brady Gendke. “We’re producing about 20 face shields a day, which will help with some of the more intense COVID-19 isolation procedures that our doctors and nurses will be doing.”

With the help of a high-powered 3-D printer, the team assembled shields by hand. At the time this story was published, they have produced over 300 shields, which have been distributed to doctors and nurses at the medical center. Since the shields are made entirely of plastic, they can be properly cleaned and re-used, eliminating the risk of running out. In addition to the production of face shields, home health has provided Cook Children’s co-workers with over 7,000 cloth masks.

“It’s very important (to produce these shields and masks) because you can help people survive and protect their health,” said Kirill Kirieiev, manager of the Orthotics and Prosthetics lab at Cook Children’s Home Health. “Then they can continue serving our patients and feel more protected. If we can make their life a little bit safer, that’s most important.”

Supporting at home summer camps for kids In order to keep patients and families safe, Cook Children’s Camps for Kids program is transitioning many of our summer camps to virtual, and will provide campers with a “camp in a box.” In addition to our virtual camps, some camps are rescheduled for later dates.

A new normal

Patients connect through virtual concerts Being in the hospital can feel isolating anytime, but during the COVID-19 pandemic, social distancing can make young patients feel even more alone.

Before the novel coronavirus, patients were able to leave their hospital rooms and enjoy activities in the Cook Children’s Child Life Zone (CLZ) and other areas of the medical center. Since the spring, our staff have had to find innovative ways to bring activities and entertainment to patients and families.

“We’ve really had to change the way we do things,” said Jill Koss, director of Family Support Services and Child Life at Cook Children’s. “The goal of Child Life is to help patients and their families work through any fears and anxieties they have about being in the hospital, and giving them tools to cope with that fear.

For patients that may find themselves in isolation due to COVID-19 testing, we are meeting many of those needs virtually.”

The Child Life Zone uses its closed TV station, CLZ-TV Channel 2, to stream directly to the TVs in patients’ rooms. They’ve ramped up their broadcasting schedule, now hosting several game shows each day that allow patients to call in from their rooms to play along. CLZ is also teaming up with Hear Fort Worth, a division of Visit Fort Worth, to bring the magic of music straight to patient rooms.

“We are honored to work with the tremendous staff at Cook Children’s Medical Center,” said Mitch Whitten, executive vice president of marketing and strategy at Visit Fort Worth. “Music can inspire and bring hope during trying times and we are grateful to our local musicians for donating their time and talents.

Music is an integral part of our city’s culture.”

There is nothing sweeter than kids helping other kids; except, of course, if they do it by selling delicious cupcakes.

Eleven-year-old Lindy Bielss took up baking last spring, specifically cupcakes. Soon after discovering her talent for baking, Lindy began selling her cupcakes to friends and neighbors. Then, Sassy Pants Cupcakes was born. Since then, she has created many flavorful masterpieces, getting most of her recipes from Pinterest. For each flavor, she also has a gluten-free version, so that her mother and brother are able to enjoy them as well.

Last summer, a friend of the Bielss family was diagnosed with a brain tumor and was treated at Cook Children’s Hematology and Oncology Center.

Caregiving in action

Healing hands Blake Palmer, M.D., is a familiar face at Cook Children’s Medical Center, and he wears a couple different hats around our system. Dr. Palmer joined Cook Children’s in 2016 and is now the medical director of our Pediatric Urology program. He’s also the surgical director of the Renal Transplant program, so he oversees all the kidney transplants under our blue peaks. He specializes in using the da Vinci® robotic-assisted surgical system, which allows him to facilitate minimally invasive procedures.

Dr. Palmer, a graduate of the College of Medicine at University of Oklahoma, enjoys the more challenging kidney transplant cases that come through his door.

“About half of these kids are urology kids, as well,” said Dr. Dr. Palmer with patient, Ozias Palmer. “Their diagnosis isn’t something that affected their kidneys directly. It’s some kind of bladder anomaly or bladder process. We spend a lot of time in urology trying to prevent kidney damage and avoiding the need for a kidney transplant.”

Dr. Palmer became heavily involved in kidney transplantation during his training. He enjoyed it because it allowed him to stay with more of his patients throughout their longer medical journeys. If one of his urology patients ends up in need of a kidney transplant, Dr. Palmer is the one to do it.

“Having that long-term continuity of care is something that I really do like,” said Dr. Palmer.

“When I talk with families who are here for bladder reconstruction or maybe cancer, I like being able to say,

‘I’m going to be there to see you guys through this and not just while you’re in the hospital, but for anything that comes up along the way.’ I want to be a part of continuing that relationship.”

Always up for a challenge, Dr. Palmer considers West Texas to be Cook Children’s next frontier and makes trips out there frequently.

“It’s an incredibly important area, especially for pediatric urology,” said Dr. Palmer. “In all of West Texas, there are two specialists in Lubbock. As the Promise says, it’s our duty to take care of all of the kids in this region and to provide them with the highest level of care available.

This just isn’t available in most of these communities.”

Dr. Palmer is driven to help as many families as he can, and he knows that’s only possible with the help of his coworkers and fellow medical professionals.

“We have a great team that’s committed to growing not only the volume, but the quality of the care that we’re providing,” said Dr. Palmer.

And that appreciation is mutual.

“Dr. Palmer is an awesome physician to work with,” said Julie Barrow, RN, CPN, a Cook Children’s renal transplant coordinator. “He values each team member’s input equally, no matter their title, and that is very important to me. He has been a great addition to our team.”

We are grateful to have Dr. Palmer and his entire team at Cook Children’s, as their priorities align quite perfectly with our Promise.

Partners in our Promise

Addressing mental health The Junior League of Fort Worth (JLFW) is a powerhouse in our community. This charitable organization of women is committed to promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of women and improving communities through trained volunteers.

Cook Children’s has been a recipient of their generosity in many ways. Members volunteer at the medical center on a yearly basis, often assisting in the Enchanted Castle Gift Shop or making rounds with Child Life specialists.

Most recently, they chose to support Cook Children’s through a 90th anniversary project, which provided $90,000 for a mental health and suicide prevention initiative. The objective was to create an environment and facilities to help families when their children are experiencing psychotic episodes or have attempted/may attempt suicide. JLFW members voted to approve this special anniversary project because they knew it was vital for our community.

As the need for behavioral health services grows in the greater Fort Worth area, JLFW funding will go toward “psych-safe” rooms within the Cook Children’s Emergency Department. These rooms have less medical equipment and are specially designed to support suicide prevention and address mental health needs.

Additionally, the JLFW has been able to support the behavioral health therapy room, and the purchase of comfort cart items for patient families, such as blankets, snacks, water, phone chargers and large-

scale sensory impact developmental toys. Their generous donation also will assist with the care of Neely, one of Cook Children’s therapy dogs who supports the Inpatient Psychiatry Unit and the Partial Hospitalization program. The grant will cover the cost of training a clinical educator with the American Psychiatric Nurses Association and additional training for clinical staff.

The JLFW President Ashley Freer knows that this project will have an accelerated impact in the community.

“The Junior League of Fort Worth has a history of learning about and addressing important community issues with focused support and care,” she said. “For our 90th anniversary, we chose projects with important and immediate impact. Our work with Cook Children’s raises awareness about a community issue and helps to provide solutions in the form of resources and training.

Members have been so proud to join together in this 2019-2020 initiative.”

This JLFW-funded project provides an opportunity to respond to the demand for behavioral health services and specifically supports suicide prevention in a tangible way. The JLFW is proud to support Cook Children’s efforts to prevent re-hospitalization and re-traumatization, as well as provide patients and their families the safety, materials and information needed to move forward on their journeys of healing.

When a family is going through an uncertain time with their child’s health, food may be the last thing on their minds. A meal card encourages them to take a break, get some nourishment and practice self-care.

By donating, you’ll help fill a family’s basic financial need and an emotional need.

We know that our patients aren’t always just dealing with their illnesses, but their family and home situations as well. Donations to this fund help families that can’t afford their child’s medications. This fund also may help cover rent and bills the families have been unable to pay while they’ve been in the medical center or provide a gas card or taxi service to their follow-up appointments.

Families that visit our Emergency Department don’t always plan to stay overnight, so they rarely have any amenities of home if they have to be admitted.

Our care kits help provide these families with basic necessities, so they can remain focused on the health of their child. Care kits consist of deodorant, toothbrushes, toothpaste, hand sanitizer and small notebooks for note taking.

No two days at Cook Children’s are the same. The needs of our patients, new research, emerging technology and growing programs all mean one thing: We are constantly changing. The Children’s Fund gives us the flexibility to meet and fund these changing needs.

Additionally, the Children’s Fund allows us to provide our patients with much-needed services, without having to bill for them.

Donor spotlight

A drive for philanthropy Jordan Spieth is a household name in the golf community. Since turning professional in December 2012, Jordan has put together an incredible resume with 14 worldwide wins and earning the title of threetime Major Champion. With his victories at The Masters (2015), The U.S. Open (2015, Chambers Bay) and The Open (2017, Royal Birkdale), Jordan joins Jack Nicklaus as the only other golfer with three Majors before the age of 24.

While he might be best known for his many golf accomplishments, he also is known for making a difference off the green through the Jordan Spieth Family Foundation (JSFF).

Jordan’s love for philanthropy was established early on in his life. His younger sister, Ellie, was born with a neurological disorder, and Jordan’s entire family came together to support Ellie and her needs. According to Jordan, his sister helped shape his charitable vision and was the driving force for wanting to give back.

Jordan and his family launched the Jordan Spieth Family Foundation following his rookie year on the PGA Tour. The foundation supports four areas that are near and dear to the family: individuals with special needs, junior golf, military support and pediatric cancer.

In 2019, the foundation named Cook Children’s an official JSFF grant partner. The grant has been designated to the new clinical research trial, Total Therapy XVII. This important investigational research

is currently the best available targeted therapy for acute lymphoblastic leukemia and lymphoblastic lymphoma.

Jordan and his wife, Annie, chose to support oncology research because they had close friends who were diagnosed with pediatric cancer. Growing up, Annie and Jordan lost a friend to childhood cancer.

Jordan and Annie wanted to ensure that no family or child would have to experience the same thing.

“We are committed to joining the fight to ultimately end pediatric cancer and Cook Children’s is doing a remarkable job to ensure that this goal becomes a reality,” Annie said.

The JSFF is also thankful for the care Cook Children’s cancer patients are receiving outside of treatment. Annie shared that Cook Children’s is able to make a tough time in a patient’s life a little easier through our family-centered care efforts, such as Child Life programs, and even through the fun, child-like details displayed throughout the medical center.

“When you step into the halls at Cook Children’s, you immediately feel care for each and every patient,” Annie said. “We are honored to play a small role in the support of this wonderful establishment and are proud to see continual growth in so many different areas of the medical center.”

We are thankful to the JSFF and their support of Cook Children’s. Because of their generosity, we are one step closer to erasing kid cancer.

In 2019, CornerStone Staffing had already made a generous gift as a radiothon sponsor, but during the last hour of the broadcast, the CornerStone team pushed their support one step further by becoming a matching partner.

Jody also made an additional personal monthly gift to raise the total. Thanks to their donations and volunteer efforts, the radiothon raised $4,000 more than the previous year’s event.

“I would consider Jody the most influential leader in our organization and she is a true servant leader,” Colby said.

“She gives so much of her herself to charitable organizations and encourages our colleagues to do the same. She allows us to take charity days and contributes sizable donations on our behalf to the charities we select, like Cook Children’s.”

I’m Alexa, and this is my story

Alexa, 16

On December 26, 2018, my family was traveling back home to Forney, Texas, after spending Christmas with our extended family. Halfway into our trip, we were on a two-lane highway when a van came into our lane and hit our SUV head-on. Immediately on impact, my mom and dad died.

I know the phrase is cliché, but my whole life literally flashed before my eyes. Everything was in slow motion. Then I realized we were rolling. I saw debris, glass, the sky, the Earth and then everything stopped. I was conscious the entire time and when I processed what had happened, I started yelling as loud as I could for help.

I was the only person conscious after we stopped rolling and I realized the car was on its side in the ditch. My mom’s passenger window had shattered and I could see the road at eye level. A man named Steven Loveless witnessed the crash. He came to my mom’s window as I was yelling for help. He stayed with me the entire time, talking to me and helping reposition my broken arms to be more comfortable.

Eventually, I was taken out of the car and put into the backseat of a truck. Steven put jackets and blankets on me to keep me warm and then he prayed with me. After about 30 minutes, I was put in an ambulance and taken to Hendrick Medical Center in Abilene, Texas.

I was notified that my 14-year-old sister, Olivia, was still alive, but I was unaware of her condition. I was in Abilene for about 7 hours before an ambulance transported me to where she was, Cook Children’s Medical Center.

I arrived around midnight and was immediately assessed.

My injuries consisted of a broken right humerus, fractured left radius (which now has one plate and nine screws), two pelvic fractures, cuts, major bruises, and lesions and abrasions from the seatbelt.

My doctors and nurses were absolutely amazing. They were always positive, happy, excited, patient, understanding and very comforting. Dr. Mayfield, who operated on my left wrist, was so amazing and explained everything so thoroughly. My Child

Life specialist, Katie Travelstead, felt like family to me. She did everything she could to make me happy, comfortable and beyond!

Sadly, my sister was in a coma and she was not going to wake up, but we still had hope. Katie came up with heartfelt projects we could do before I left the medical center or before Olivia passed away.

We made a painting of an angel together. The Child Life specialists got a blank canvas, painted one of my feet with gold paint to represent a body and painted each of Olivia’s hands with gold paint to represent wings. We also made two identical white Build-A-Bear® stuffed bears. While Olivia had one in her room, I had one in my room and it was almost like we were connected.

Most of all, I am so impressed with the patience of every single staff person. On a daily basis, there were probably more than 30 family and friends split between me and my sister. Usually only three to four were allowed to see the patient at once, but sometimes, there were 10 or 15 visitors in my room.

During my stay, Steven came to see me! My Nana and I meet him and his family at least once a month. I am so grateful God put him there at the exact time and place to help me through this life-long journey.

My whole family was just so impressed! I absolutely love Cook Children’s and every time I get to go, I get so excited.

Cook Children’s did so much for me, my sister, and my family!

Elevating the patient experience

The empathy diet When you hear the term “diet,” what comes to mind? For some, that means consuming more fruits and veggies than usual. But for others, a diet might be the difference between quality of life and a trip to the emergency room.

This rings true for patients of the Cook Children’s Dialysis and Nephrology program. Children with end-stage renal disease require a special diet that many would not consider intuitive. Consumption of healthy foods is encouraged, but only certain types are appropriate due to their potassium, phosphorus and sodium levels. On top of that, patients must remember to take medication with every meal to reduce the absorption of dietary phosphate.

Barrett Brown, RN, BSN, has been a dialysis nurse for three years and has not only seen how difficult the diet can be, he also knows this from personal experience.

“When I first started in the clinic, I could tell that following the renal diet was a problem for these patients,” he said. “Diets across the board are hard enough for any adult to follow, and these are children.”

Because the diet is such an important part of a patient’s treatment, Barrett wanted to know if he too could follow the renal diet. In 2018, he brought the idea to his team as a New Year’s resolution. Amanda Marroquin, RD, CSR, a registered dietician, liked Barrett’s idea and decided to take it a step further.

Amanda reached out to Mary Cazzell, Ph.D., RN, the director of Nursing Research and Evidence-based Practice at Cook Children’s. Mary was interested in turning the idea into a research study. Mary and Amanda decided to approach the diet with a goal of

increased empathy between health care providers and their patients. But how does a person measure empathy?

The breakdown of the Renal Diet Staff Empathy Study looks like this: There are two groups of coworkers who participate in the study. Both groups are required to attend a renal diet education class, but only one group participates in a two-week renal diet trial. Before and after each group completes their requirements, cognitive levels of empathy are measured by the Jefferson Scale of Empathy.

The Jefferson Scale included statements such as, “I try to imagine myself in my patients’ shoes when providing care to them” and “It is difficult for me to view things from my patients’ perspectives.”

Participants from each group were given a questionnaire to complete with a scale that indicated if they highly agreed or disagreed.

The study found that levels of empathy increased when our co-workers followed the two-week renal diet and, similar to the patients, they too had a hard time following the diet. The study has been presented at the Society of Pediatric Nursing Conference and will also be presented at Cook Children’s Grand Rounds.

“Based on what we have found, no one else has conducted a study like this or has published one like it,” Amanda said. “We’re being innovators and the empathy diet is applicable to areas like celiac disease and diabetes. There are a lot of therapeutic diets we expect our patients to follow, and when they don’t, we see that as an issue. In reality, the diets are really hard to follow.

We are so excited for the empathy diet to continue to make a difference in other specialty areas.”

Independence 101 When you walk into the apartment inside the Child Study Center (CSC) Upper School at Cook Children’s, it may look just like your first apartment. The small studio boasts a refrigerator, a stove, an oven, a bed, a table and chairs, a washer and a dryer – all the appliances and items one would expect in a typical living space.

But no one actually lives in this apartment. Instead, it’s a comprehensive learning resource for students, ages 11 to 21, in the CSC Upper School, the secondary program to Jane Justin School.

The upper school helps students with intellectual and development disabilities develop their independence, so they can become productive members in the community and achieve meaningful adult lives.

This mock apartment is designed to give students a taste of what to expect when they’re living on their own.

Each year, members of Cook Children’s philanthropic society, Seventh Avenue, work closely with Cook Children’s leaders to determine how to make the largest difference in the system, and in 2019, they voted to support CSC Upper School’s mock apartment.

The students are already benefiting from the group’s incredible generosity.

“High school students use the apartment daily to get ready for work, to prepare meals and snacks, and to practice important activities of daily living,” said Tracie Mann, Ph.D., LBA, headmaster of the Jane Justin School and CSC Upper School. “Our state-of-the-art, fully furnished mock apartment has had an immediate and positive impact on our upper school students. We are so grateful to the members of Seventh Avenue for their contribution to our program and for their dedication to Cook Children’s Promise.”

PAWS-itive effect As you walk the halls of Cook Children’s Medical Center, it’s not uncommon to hear little shrieks of joy coming from adults and children alike. More often than not, one of our six facility dogs is the cause!

Chanel, Journey, Kitty, Neely, Steve and Brienne comprise the furry half of Cook Children’s donorfunded Sit...Stay...PLAY program, and they are responsible for comforting patients, families and staff across the medical center.

Research has shown that interacting with dogs during stressful situations can help children and family members feel more at ease and reduce their anxiety.

A team of our employees from across the medical center has been trained as the dogs’ handlers, and each day, the dogs come to work to serve as part of our therapeutic environment.

Child Life specialist and Sit…Stay…PLAY program coordinator Laura Sonefeld works with both Steve and

Brienne. Every day she sees the positive effects of the dogs on patients.

“The impact I’ve seen has been pretty amazing,” said Laura. “Brienne trots into her areas and all of the nurses and staff stop to greet us. Then they point out which patients would benefit from a visit.”

Each dog and its handler are assigned to specific areas within the medical center. Chanel rounds on patients in the Hematology and Oncology Center, trauma area and inpatient surgery recovery. She also joins our Pain Management team for patient visits.

Journey spends time seeing patients in the Cardiac Step-down Inpatient Unit. She also recently began rounding to provide general staff support. Kitty, who came to us along with her cousin Journey, works closely with the Child Advocacy Resources and Evaluation (CARE) Team. Neely spends her time seeing patients

and families on the Inpatient Psychiatry Unit, as well as in the Partial Hospitalization Program.

Our two newest additions to the team, Steve and Brienne, have been with us for less than a year, but they already seem right at home. Steve spends time with patients and families in the Child Life Zone, and fulfills dog consults in the Dodson Specialty Clinics and several inpatient areas across the medical center. Brienne rounds with patients on the Rehabilitation and Transitional Care Units, in the Special Procedures Area and in the Dodson Surgery Center.

Each day, these dogs and their dedicated handlers work hard to change the lives of patients within our walls, and you can too. This program is completely donor-funded, and we are so grateful for the community’s support to allow it to continue.

Primary care comes to Plano and McKinney In February, Cook Children’s added a new office in the Legacy area of Plano to our growing list of North Texas options for patient families. In May, we opened a primary care office in McKinney, where Michelle Bailey, M.D., is welcoming new patient families. “I enjoy not only caring for my young patients, but becoming a part of every family by building long-lasting, trusting relationships,” said Dr. Bailey. “While I treat common and not-so-common childhood infections and diseases, I especially have a passion for asthma and allergies, nutrition, and ADHD, along with other learning disorders.”

Specialty care services in Prosper Construction crews continue to make great progress on Cook Children’s Medical Center – Prosper.

Scheduled to fully open in 2022, other buildings on the expansive campus are up-and-running, including those that offer primary and urgent care.

Starting this summer, patients will be able to access additional specialty care services on the campus, such as gastroenterology, nephrology, neurology, hematology and oncology, cardiology and urology. Pulmonology, endocrinology, orthopedics, pediatric surgery, psychology and ear, nose and throat services will be added this fall.

Cook Children’s gastroenterologist and Prosper resident, Anthony Anani, M.D., is excited to now have the opportunity to care for his neighbors in this growing community.

“Helping families and kids in the same schools and activities as my own kids, and allowing them to achieve their full potentials, is very rewarding,” he said.
