Rua Augusta belongs to that part of the city built after the earth quaked in 1755. It owes its grandeur to the Marquis de Pombal and it has been car free for decades. It is the busiest thoroughfare in the city’s Baixa district, where eccentric characters co-exist with more ordinary passers-by and age-old shops adjoin branches of modern shopping chains.
