Esta é uma homenagem a quem vive este bairro no seu dia-a-dia. Every neighbourhood is constructed from stories. Of the past, of houses, of monuments and of people. It is they who create the real landscape, the distinct personality of each place. This is a tribute to those for whom this neighbourhood is home.

MARIA JOÃO
O espaço é pouco para descrever uma pessoa tão especial. Aqui, ficam apenas alguns retalhos do percurso de Maria João do Vale. O caminho pelas artes era inevitável para alguém com uma necessidade tão grande de criar: fez a António Arroio, design nas Belas Artes e ainda joalharia. Mas o seu lugar encontrou-o quando criou a Alternativa, uma loja-atelier onde tem roupa que compra “por feeling” e não a pensar em vender, e também peças criadas por si. “Gosto de pintura, escultura e joalharia, e acabo por convergir tudo isso na roupa” diz com a alegria de quem faz o que gosta. For such a special person, there’s barely enough room for a few details. With such a strong urge to create, it was inevitable that Maria João do Vale would enter the arts: first art, then design and jewellery. But her vocation lay in Alternativa, her shop/studio where she sells clothes she buys ‘cos she likes them and not with the customer in mind and things she makes herself. “I like painting, sculpture and jewellery and it all comes together in the clothes,” she says with the joy of someone who loves what they do.
AUGUSTO
“Acabei o liceu e vim para aqui” conta Augusto Mayer, referindo-se à loja fundada pelo seu pai, a conhecida casa Mayer. Hoje, passados mais de 50 anos, continua a abrir as portas pela manhã, a fechá-las à tardinha e a dirigir com o seu irmão Ivo Mayer este negócio dedicado às antiguidades. Noutros tempos foi também casa de penhores e empréstimos, e é com alguma saudade que o Sr. Augusto fala dessa altura: “Tínhamos uma clientela muito boa. Agora a maioria das pessoas gosta de viver em casas vazias”. Apesar da mudança dos tempos, a porta desta antiga casa continua gloriosamente aberta. “As soon as I left school, I came to work here,” recounts Augusto Mayer, referring to the shop founded by his father, the well-known Mayer. Today, after 50 years, he still opens the doors every morning, closes them at night and runs the antiques business with his brother Ivo, which was once also a pawn and loan shop. Augusto talks fondly of the past, recalling all the customers, the friendships and the trips around the world in search of antiques.
