7 WAYS TO WORSHIP GOD AT WORK

Some days, the trudge from nine to five feels like trekking through a spiritual no-man’s land. Maybe I should resign, I think, move to Nepal and pass out copies of the Gospel of John. Then my work could count for the Kingdom.

When I find myself thinking this way, I imagine the Apostle Paul saying, “Wait a minute. I said, ‘Whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.’ 1 Cor. 10:31.” Whether we pump gas in Toronto, teach at the University of Illinois, or run an orphanage in Sudan, our work can worship God. But, how?

WE WORSHIP GOD AT WORK WHEN WE DEPEND ON HIM FOR:

INTELLECTUAL HELP When we’re stumped on a project and wracking our brain for a solution, we can stop and ask God for insight. When we depend on him for intellectual help, we worship our all-knowing God.

MATERIAL HELP If we’re running an hour behind schedule, due to a catastrophe in the morning, cutting corners and trying to recover on our own, we can ask God to intervene. When we depend on God for logistical and material help, we worship our all-powerful God.

FRUIT-OF-THE-SPIRIT HELP After hearing a sermon on love, we might prepare to muscle our way through loving our coworkers, or we can also ask the Holy Spirit to produce Jesus’ love in us. When we depend on God to reveal the character of Jesus in us, we worship the God who dwells in us.

WE ALSO WORSHIP

GOD AT WORK WHEN WE OFFER HIM:

OUR BEST Whether we clean houses, build software, or balance the company’s finances, we’re in charge of developing and caring for our corner of the world. When we do our best to reflect God’s creativity and care in our work, we worship the God who made us in his image (Genesis 1:26).

THANK-YOU’S God wants us to acknowledge all the gifts we take for granted: a job that pays the bills, a boss who isn’t abusive, or catching a mistake before the email goes out. When we neglect to thank God, even for the small things, we start edging away from him (Romans 1:21), but when we give thanks, we worship our giving God.

WONDER Too often, we stress our way through work, oblivious to the wonders of life, but each day is full of opportunities to develop a sense of awe for all the possibilities God crammed into this world. When we praise God for digital technology, a coworker’s immune system that kicked the flu, or the microwave that heated up lunch, we worship our creative God.

ULTIMATE CREDIT When we land a big sale that impresses the boss, we can bask in the glow of our success, or we can also acknowledge that God’s behind it. When we give God ultimate credit, we worship the God who made our strengths and helps us in our weaknesses.

So, let’s worship God through our work today—whether we’re preaching in the jungles of Indonesia, gloving up for heart surgery, or flipping gorditas at Taco Bell.

Feb. 13, 2026

Experience a day in the life of a TWU student.

TODAY! Mar. 13, 2026

Therehas never been a time when I felt more sinful or weak than when I was studying theology. Education can tend to do that. It makes us much more aware of how prone we are to make mistakes and how little we actually know. The world of academia brings information into our grasp in a special way — it teaches us to see through different lenses, to grow in our understanding of ourselves, those around us, and God. And while my goal was to become smarter, the years of sitting in lectures and burying my nose in textbooks brought about more questions than answers, reminding me daily that I’m limited.

Yet there’s huge value, especially as Christians, in pursuing academic endeavors for exactly that reason. If you come out of your years of studies keenly aware of your lack of knowledge, like you’ve just scratched the surface of what you don’t know, I hope you embrace it. Owning your limitations helps you step into greater wholeness, and there’s nothing quite like attending school to catalyze that process.

wrong or you can find a scapegoat to blame instead. You can mentally check out when the lessons are hard or you can face them head on by wrestling with the content and applying it to your life. The choice is yours. I’ve often wished learning could happen through osmosis, but it doesn’t. Growth takes place when you commit to putting in the work.

Say No So You Can Say Yes

One of the hardest lessons I’ve learned is to admit that I cannot possibly do everything I want to do, or even everything I feel I should do. School offers a vast array of opportunities in an endless parade down your dorm’s hallway. If you’re like me, it’s easy to get swept up in the events, projects, committees, and teams. But don’t drown yourself in to-do lists. Asking for God’s direction, figure

ScholarlySanctification

As you think about your future within the classroom, here are some useful tips that have helped me take advantage of this scholarly sanctification.

Take Initiative For Your Own Growth

You can have the best professors on the planet and have access to the greatest curriculum, but ultimately you’re responsible for what you learn. If you truly want to see lasting transformation in your life, if you want to become who God made you to be, you must be proactive. You can fully engage in your classes or you can choose to just get by. You can admit your faults and repent when you’re

out your goals and values and run hard after your priorities. Create margin and intentionally take time to rest by saying no to good things in order to say yes to the best ones. Staying focused on the life-giving things you care most about makes all the difference.

Learn to Rely on Grace

God’s grace (by definition, a free gift you don’t have to earn) seems like the opposite of how the school system works. As a student, you don’t get straight As unless

you’re good and right. In life, as a sinful human, it’s impossible to be good and right all the time. When you’re reminded of that, put yourself in a position of grace. It may be counter cultural in today’s society, but make space for silence in order to hear from the Giver of Grace. Through practicing solitude and staying connected to the Vine, you’ll be able to discern what it is that matters most and bear good fruit because of it.

See Strength in Weakness

When you’re exhausted from staying up too late in the library or waking up at an ungodly hour for a last-minute cram session, it’s easy to forget your motives and question why anyone in their right mind would want to go through formal education. Believe me, I’ve been there. Yet I hope even in that moment you keep your eyes open. It is there that you have the chance to own your limitations and step closer to the One whose grace is sufficient and whose strength is made perfect in weakness. In all my days of schooling there was no more significant, life-changing lesson than that.

"As young Christians, we are often given an oversimplified version of reality "

The Challenge of Choosing Transformation over Preservation

Secular University was the beginning of the end for me. The end of innocence.

You might think that statement is hyperbolic, but I promise you it’s not. It is the end of innocence for most people. However, I think it can be a particularly jarring experience for believers. The vast majority go to university expecting and hoping to lose their innocence; Christians enter non-Christian universities hoping against hope to keep it.

What does innocence look like exactly? In the sense that I use the word, it means having a black and white view of things, that lends itself to having clear-cut answers to life’s questions. In that way, it is distinct from purity, which is to do with the motivations of your actions. Innocence has got to do with our perception of the world. As young Christians, we are often given an oversimplified version of reality. Then we are taught behaviours that work well enough within that reality. All of this is fairly useful in the controlled environment that is childhood, but you are either about to, or have recently entered a new reality. At university, everything takes on a distinct tinge of grey. The tools you have been given in your church communities will certainly help, but they will not make sense of everything. In fact, they may make sense of less and less.

The Two Paths

I have found that Christian students mostly react to the grey in two ways, and the way in which they react, often becomes the norm throughout the rest of their lives. The first group, the lion’s share, seem to close ranks. They spend more and more time in bible studies, and Christian campus groups, and almost no time with non-believers, unless it involves evangelizing to them. They commit their hearts, souls and minds to preserving the clear black and white lines they were presented with in their younger years, and usually the only way to do this is to cut themselves off from anyone and anything that will bring those boundaries into question. The second group either give up on their faith completely, or embrace a much more watered down version, picking and choosing what is convenient for the lifestyles they want to lead.

Both these paths suggest that somehow our faith, our God, is not big enough to deal with the realities and complexities of life. Therefore, we either must give it and Him up, or we must cordon Him and ourselves off in safety. Perhaps the truth is that our view, our vision of God is not big enough. Most of us enter our adulthood with a two-dimensional map, handed down to us by a narrower, more prescriptive version of our faith, which has answers only for the limited experiences of our youth. What we find on entering adulthood is that life is very much three-dimensional, not only are there mountains and valleys, but each mountain and valley has a thousand crevices and cracks, creeks and canyons and the 2d map we would have bet our lives on, quickly becomes obsolete.

I spent one evening in university, debating the finer points of our respective faiths with a friend who was a staunch Muslim. Later that night, as he walked me out of his house, we found another student (who we didn’t know) lying completely prone on the sidewalk. It turned out he had drunk himself almost to unconsciousness, and the friends he had been drinking with had long since left. My friend and I had an identical reaction. We put him in my friend’s car, and drove him home. Because this whole episode happened after such a heated religious debate, it begged the question, “should our lives both have ended that night for some reason, would I go to heaven, and he to the other place?” After all, we were both searching for the same thing, more and more of God. If you’re looking for a simple answer to that question, I’ll tell you now that there isn’t one, and I had to content myself with the reality that it wasn’t my question to ask, or answer. My

only job was to love him, and allow him to love me. I will add that before that event, I had sorted out fairly neatly in my mind who went to heaven and who didn’t. That was a long time ago.

A Faith That Changes

I believe part of the problem is in how we are taught to view the relationship between life and faith. We view life as a journey with twists and turns, and faith as a constant that helps us through the journey if we keep these rules, rituals and routines we have been taught. The rules and rituals have their place, don’t get me wrong, but the reality I have found is that for faith to really fulfill its potential in our lives and in our relationship with God, IT must change. Here are a couple of verses that, I believe, support this view.

Then the disciples of John came to him, saying, “Why do we and the Pharisees fast, but your disciples do not fast?” And Jesus said to them, “Can the wedding guests mourn as long as the bridegroom is with them? The days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast. No one puts a piece of unshrunk cloth on an old garment, for the patch tears away from the garment, and a worse tear is made. Neither is new wine put into old wineskins. If it is, the skins burst and the wine is spilled and the skins are destroyed. But new wine is put into fresh wineskins, and so both are preserved.” – Matt 9:14-16

The specifics of this verse are one thing, but generally, I believe Christ is saying, “This is a new time, and I am here to do a new thing, if you keep holding on to the old way, you will miss it”. Christ presents to us a new thing, but that thing didn’t just happen 2,026 years ago, it’s happening now, every day, in the world and in us. It is typical of God’s work to be paradoxical or seemingly contradictory in this way. Something has happened, but that something is also continually happening. That’s the story of the Gospel, and Christ’s saving act, it’s also the story of our lives. We are continually being remade, and God uses the journey of life to do this. So if our response is to remain the same, to cling to who we were, and what we knew, are we not putting new wine in old skins? The skin you have today is perfectly good… for today… but if you are to keep growing, then you must accept that it won’t be good enough for tomorrow.

A Coca-Cola Christianity

"Most of us enter our adulthood with a twodimensional map"

I don’t mean to suggest that the laws and good practices we learn in our younger years are misguided. They are useful and profitable, and will go some way in helping you make good decisions and preserve your integrity as you embark on university life… but they have their limits. The tougher challenges that await, will require increasing measures of grace, faith, hope, love, wisdom, patience etc. These are not behaviours easily taught, and yet the more prescriptive elements of our faith-based upbringings, must give way to these deeper elements, the substance of which is the “law fulfilled”. The law is fulfilled in the person of Christ, in the perfection of Christ and in his love. It is also fulfilled as we slowly transition from the old man – one capable of good works, towards the new man, one who IS good, because he’s fully reflecting Christ. At the fullest extent of this transformation, we no longer need the law, for it is written on our hearts. That’s the promise of the Christian journey. Without a doubt, transformation should produce the sorts of behaviors we are taught growing up. What is desperately needed however is something powerful

enough, full enough and dynamic enough to handle those aspects of life for which there are no “easy Christian answers”. The very Spirit and nature of God.

Here is an analogy that may help. It also has to do with wine… we go into our adulthood often with “Coca-Cola Christianity”. It’s sweet, it’s uncomplicated, but ultimately not that good for us. The alternative to this is “Wine Christianity”. You may have heard the expression as a kid that alcohol is an acquired taste, and wine certainly is that. Yet, in time, if you are open, you go from thinking wine is just a bitter drink, to noticing increasingly, its subtle flavors. Wine is a drink for the mature, not for those looking for superficial sweetness. Similarly, as ever-maturing Christians, we learn to appreciate that there can be beauty in the complex, or even in the grey, and that is often exactly where we find it. That whatever trials and questions await us, God is more than capable of bending our experiences to His will, to His desire to change us… deeply… to make us His Saints, capable of carrying His light down the street, or to the ends of the earth.

The Holy Spirit’s Work

What does this actually look like? What are the practicalities involved in pursuing this rich journey with God? How does one continually choose paths of transformation over paths of preservation and stagnation? I have never been one for how-to lists, or ten step programs. We are all so different, and our journeys so unique, that it doesn’t make a lot of sense to me to have a catchall piece of instruction. But here is what I think. Christ is clear in saying that it’s God’s Holy Spirit that brings any meaningful change within us. A lot of the work, He’s going to do, and you just need to trust that. There is so much freedom in that, believe me. Your job is to love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind, and love your neighbour as yourself. If you don’t think that is enough of an assignment, I beg you to try it. Without love, all else is clanging symbols. With it, all the other activity that may accompany your life as a Christian, will either fall in place or if superfluous, fall by the wayside. You will surely get it wrong sometimes, but trust the Spirit of God to work with you and within you, and live in the freedom of his Grace.

University is a life-changing time for everyone. If you ask God for it, it can be a time of deep spiritual change for you. Embrace the change, in the leading of His Spirit.

After Doubt: How To Question Your Faith Without Losing It

A.J. Swoboda

In college, it can be spiritually disorienting to encounter tough intellectual questions and new worldviews. In his book After Doubt: How to Question Your Faith Without Losing It, professor and former pastor A.J. Swoboda argues that while the deconstruction experience can lead to loss of faith, it is also an opportunity to mature spiritually. Having pastored people through deconstruction, Swoboda manages to be sensitive to personal experience and faithful to Christian orthodoxy. Pick up his book for a thoughtful guide through the murky topic of deconstruction.

The Pursuit of God

A.W. Tozer

A.W. Tozer was a lay preacher who began in church ministry when he was only 17 years old. He was a passionate, devout man of God who wrote many books. The Pursuit of God, his best-known work, explores what it means to actually follow Christ. Uncompromising, earnest, and bold, this book provides a fresh and yet timeless challenge to Christians and non-Christians alike who think they understand the message of Jesus.

Did you know that many of the first scientists studied the universe in order to learn more about the Creator behind it? BioLogos’ podcast Language of God continues in this vein, with each episode featuring interviews with prominent Christian or spiritually open figures, including Makoto Fujimura, Bill McKibben, N.T. Wright, Francis Collins, and Jane Goodall. This podcast is a great listen for anyone with questions about how faith and the sciences intersect.

Sometimesmom said “no,” but that never stopped me from asking. If I didn’t smell chocolate chip cookies as soon as I opened our front door after school, I’d request a snack. Sometimes she made me wait for dinner, but not always, so every day I asked. I had a confidence in my mom that I often lack with God.

For years, I questioned the value of praying for a husband, since I knew singleness could be part of God's sovereign plan. Sometimes I doubt whether he cares about things like a tight budget. I find it hard to ask him to heal my sister-in-law’s multiple sclerosis, since a “no” pushes me into the dark place of suffering.

I hear other Christians share similar obstacles. If God cares more about eternal things, like people dying and going to hell, they wonder whether he really cares about finding them a new job. If God is sovereign, he’ll do what he wants, so why bother asking for another child. If they ask God to heal their mom, but she still dies, they struggle with feeling abandoned by him.

Jesus Bypasses Our Obstacles To Prayer

When Jesus taught the crowds how to pray, he stepped right over these quandaries. We call it the Lord’s Prayer, and in it Jesus throws open the doors on our inhibitions. Have a physical need or desire? He tells us to pray about it: “Give us this day our daily bread” (Matt 6:11). Hurt

from broken relationships? “Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us” (v.12). Stuck in patterns of self-destruction? “Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil” (v.13).

Whatever eats us up inside–the things we worry about, the fear that keeps us up at night, the temptation that won’t go away–Jesus invites us to pray about that. And he bypasses our obstacles to prayer with two assumptions:

1. God Cares About Human Flourishing

Jesus teaches us, through the Lord’s prayer, that God cares when we’re hungry, hurt, and tempted. He dreams about human flourishing, not just about our spiritual maturity. He wants us to ask him about our earthly concerns.

2. Lamenting Brokenness Is A Good Thing

Every Prayer Is A Prayer For The Kingdom

When Jesus teaches us how to pray, he’s plugging us back into the bigger story. He’s highlighting how our family dysfunction, unfulfilled sexual needs, or diagnosis of diabetes are a result of Adam and Eve–and us with them–rejecting God’s offer to set up his kingdom on earth.

God’s rule would’ve brought human flourishing, but now his kingdom is in heaven and we live out the repercussions of that on earth. This reality manifests itself in the tension with our boss, fights with our kids, and envy at the gym. Whatever issues we struggle with stem from this bigger problem. We need his kingdom to come back.

How to WhenPray God Seem To

But, Jesus’ prayer also recognizes that life on this earth is not characterized by that sort of human flourishing. We hunger in a multitude of ways. We get hurt. We self-destruct and bring others down with us. Jesus isn’t teaching us to pray as if the solution to these problems is a higher level of spirituality where all hurt evaporates. He’s teaching us to face the hurt and ask God to fix it, to lament the brokenness and cry out, “Your kingdom come.”

Jesus’ prayer offers us the space to be brutally realistic, but still bold, when we pray. Between the lines of his prayer we can lament the millions of children that go hungry in the US alone, the divorce tearing apart a friend’s family, and the depression that grips us.

But the prayer also invites us to pray to God with frankness about what we want and expect him to answer. He is the kind of God who wants his humans to flourish. We can pray, confident that his heart leans towards saying “yes” to our prayers, even if we have to wait for the Resurrection to hear it.

That’s why Jesus teaches us to hinge our requests on “Your kingdom come.” Without widening our prayers to that frame, we’ll feel abandoned by God, disappointed, and futile in our prayers.

So pray for your deepest longings–that God will give you a child, miraculously remove the cancer, or change the same-sex attraction. Pray confidently that he wants to meet your deepest needs, and will at the Resurrection. Be like a kid asking for a cookie after school, because maybe–just maybe–he’ll say yes.
