W

hen we have a look at the previous year; Turkey’s total export has reached 157,6 billion USD at an increase of 4%. In this term industrial product exports are realized as 124 billion USD at an increase of 4,3%.

During the same term, Turkish Textile and Raw Materials sector has realized a record – 8,9 billion USD – with 6% increase.

With this amount, our textile export has increased its share in total commodities to 5,6% and increased its share in industrial products to 7,2%. Our textile sector’s performance has been above Turkey’s average.

On the other hand, Turkish forestry exports were 4,5 billion USD, Turkish carpet exports were 2,3 billion USD, Turkish ceramics glass and soil product exports were 3,1 billion USD and the group of miscellaneous industry products has realized 110 million USD exports with 3,5 % average increase at the end of 2014.

Furthermore; during the first 3 months of 2015, due to the regional instabilities – mainly in Russia and in the Middle East – and due to the fluctuations in the exchange rate, our sub-sectors has been affected negatively. On the other hand, even in these negative circumstances, we definitely have a potential to recover rapidly and create new initiatives and new projects.

Today, Turkey is one of the few countries that come to mind when high quality products are mentioned in Contract Business’ sub sectors such as the interior fabrics, curtains, upholstery, towels, marbles, furniture, lighting, carpets etc.

Our companies and our brands provide top quality in all respects, from production to promotion; from quality standards to marketing. This success has been achieved by focusing on high added value products that highlight design and brand quality as part of Turkey’s export boosting strategy.

The success is a result of the hard work of SME’s as well as large, modern and vertically integrated companies which are capable of producing and exporting their own unique collections.

Turkish Contract Business sector products are extensively used for supplying the middle and high segment needs of the related companies worldwide. In this context, Turkish Contract Business products are being exported to all

continents. It has become obvious that expectations and perceptions within the Contract Business Sector are being reshaped in new emerging economies as in Turkey.

All of these companies run at high capacity, using modern technology and a highly qualified labor-force with well-trained human resource representatives. The success that this industry has gained in international trade is a result of the hard work of small and medium sized firms as well as large, modern and vertically integrated companies.

Our companies in the global Contract Business sector have a strong image.

“Made in Turkey” label – all around the world – has become the symbol for quality and reliability. This significant achievement is a result of both our companies admirable efforts and also is a result of the projects and events of the Associations.

In order to contribute to the successes of our exporters and to represent our sectors brilliantly, we have been organizing many events both in our country and in intercontinental platforms. In 2014 - for instance – we have realized nearly 30 trend areas, national participation organizations, buyers’ delegations, informative stands and B2B meetings. We have been a role model for our sectors and the other large sectors and we are maintaining our position to be the pioneer.

As is known R&D Brokerage Event is a well known brand for R&D and Innovation in the textile and clothing industry in Turkey. The traditional summit held in Bursa each year is going to be organized at Merinos Ataturk Congress and Culture Center - the second biggest congress center of Turkey - on 27th -29th of May, 2015. The R&D project market summit is; sector/industry based, continuous, and the only international R&D market summit for the Textile and Clothing Sector of Turkey.

Through this great event, it is aimed to have Textile and Apparel Sector to achieve high value added production and perform sustainable export. To this end, it is aimed to turn project ideas into partnerships. and have these potential partnerships present industry – university Joint Project proposals for the Research and Development Outreach Programs

by UTIB and BTSO in Bursa for the past 7 years. Also this year, IV. Turkish Home Textile Design Competition and Award Ceremony will be held parallel with the main event.

Heimtextil Frankfurt recorded another success!

Held for the 45th time in Frankfurt, Germany, 14-17 January 2015, Heimtextil Frankfurt fair is one of the most prestigious fairs in the world in home textiles field.

T

his year Uludag Textile Exporters’ Association (UTIB) participated in the fair for the sixth time.

The Association showed up in the event with “Facets of Splendor” theme as the major topic of 2015/2016 trends with an aim “to promote home textile brands in the world, to lead in the 8

brand building activities in abroad, to increase their shares in the markets they are in, to do research about strategies of competition to improve exports to target countries, to promote participating Turkish companies in a great and prestigious exhibition booth.”

Participation offered opportunities for visitors, the press, local and international locals to observe the April /2015

newest collections of the firms and the trends for 2015/2016 season.

The booth of 100 sqm was inaugurated by the Turkish Minister of Economy Nihat Zeybekci, president of Turkish Exporters Assembly (TIM) Mehmet Buyukeksi, vice president of TIM and chairman of the assembly of exporters in Denizli Suleyman Kocasert, vice chairman and the board members of UTIB Osman Nuri Canik, vice chairman of Bursa chamber of trade and industry İsmail Kuş.

A large number of participation in the fair from Turkey was observed and Turkey’s participation was the fifth largest participation. (China 465, India 387, Germany 341, Pakistan 215 and Turkey 157 firms.)

85 % of 2656 participants were from foreigners.

Although there was no official opening of the fair, around one to one and half thousand business people visited the info stand of UTIB. Most of the visitors were from abroad and were professional visitors.

In terms of export value German market is the greatest for Turkish home textile industry. Besides, Turkey is the second largest supplier for German market. Turkey has 14% share in this market. Turkey’s home textile exports were about 3.1 billion dollars in 2014 and Turkey is the fourth greatest exporter of home textile products in the world.

As a result, when it comes to home textiles Turkey is one of the first countries mentioned in the world.

The country has become a center for fashion and trend setting in the world of the home textile industry.

Turkey was the second largest participant in the event after Chinese. Number of companies from China was 297, from Turkey 86, South Korea 69, India 51, Pakistan 31, Taiwan 25 and Thailand 22 companies. 13,639 people from 111 countries visited the fair.

About 600 fabrics manufacturers from 27 countries exhibited a broad range of products including cotton, denim, embroidery, lace, functional fabrics, knitted fabrics, linen, hemp, prints, shirting, silk, wool and wool blends.

The show was marked by a revelation of its leitmotif “Presence” and its trends for summer 2016, designer fashion shows and effervescent exhibitors’ stands. The trade fair saw a slight year-on-year increase, welcoming 13,639 visitors.

Michael Scherpe, the CEO Messe Frankfurt France, expressed his

satisfaction stating, “This 1% increase represents encouraging stability. I am delighted at the stronger French presence, but I note that there was a marked, foreseeable decline in visitors from Russia. It was a successful show, as the exhibitors met their usual purchasers and generated highly satisfactory volumes of orders. The only significant fluctuations noted were the increase in French and British visitors. We are delighted that we were able to combine a creative, competitive range which meets the demands of international brands coming to Paris in full In terms of the number of new exhibitors, there has been no change in the top three since the February 2014 event. China is still in the lead, with Turkey holding on to second place, followed by South Korea.

India comes fourth. Turkey remains in second place as a country ranked by number of exhibitors, borne up by the quality of its offer and by strong demand for sourcing close to home.

Famous Turkish textile brands in Como For the first time UTIB leads the way for Turkish textile exporters to Como to be officially part of Proposte, 25-30 April 2015

C

omposed of designers, professional buyers, furniture producers, wholesalers, and purchasing teams, the sectoral trade group from Como is expected to visit Turkish brands in Como between 25 to 30 April 2015 to meet with selected Turkish home textile companies. Turkish Deco Team companies, a group of leading

home textile producers in Turkey will exhibit and show their goods to guests and engage bilateral talks with buyers. They will try to attract interest of the visitors by their quality products and innovative designs.

The event is organized by Proposte with the concept of International Observatory in parallel with the Proposte fair, one of the major trade shows in Italy.

Evteks home textile excitement starts E

vteks home textile trade fair has proved its success by its amazing growth in the last two decades. The exhibition area was only 600 sqm twenty years ago, now it covers 160 thousand sqm, representing a growth of 265.7% fold.

Organized by the industry’s powerful association TETSIAD, EVTEKS, 21st Istanbul Home Textile Trade Fair opens its doors in CNR Expo Yesilkoy, 19-23 May 2015.

Besides being an event that is sought after by the professionals of global industries, Evteks is an important activity for both Turkish home textile industry and other producers coming from Europe and regional countries.

Production power of Turkish textile industry is reflected in the home textile field. Exporting about 3.1 billion dollars of home textile goods in 2013, Turkey’s share in the world has reached 5% as of the end of 2014.

Like other textile and apparel fields, home textile industry is running on the way to be one of the star industries in Turkey. It has great value added share in the national economy. While the average price of general exports of is about 1.5 dollars per kilogram, every kilogram of home textiles exports brings 10.5 dollars to Turkey. Share of imported

inputs in home textiles exported is about 30 percent, 70 percent net income.

More than 2,000 brands and firms are participating in the fair, where world famous trend watchers will

introduce the 2016 trends in textiles.

Seminars and other activities during the event, national and global designers, academia, and professional will offer their presentations to attract the interest of visitors and participating companies.

10 exhibitors from 10 countries reflected the major textile manufacturing nations for apparel fabrics and accessories. 22 Turkish companies displayed their latest collections at the fair.

Istanbul, the commercial and financial hub of the Turkish republic, is once again in the focus of the textile 14

industries: The second edition of Texworld Istanbul opens was held from 07th to 09th April, 2015, at the Lütfi Kırdar International Convention & Exhibition Center in the heart of downtown Istanbul.

The UTIB stand at the fair was also visited by Messe Frankfurt Turkey managing directors Tayfun Yardım and Işın Sağlam. Merve Göral Ertaş, a staff from UTIB’s Fairs and Promotion Department, accepted an award for the Management Board of UTIB at the fair.

Turkish fabrics showed at NY Premiere Vision

O

ne of the most prestigious trade shows of fashion world Premiere Vision was held in New York, January 13 - 14 2015. National participation of Turkish companies was organized by Uludag Textile Exporters Association, UTIB. Fabrics made by 18 Turkish companies were exhibited to the professional visitors coming from all over the world.

Regarded as an efficient platform for introducing the latest designs and style by the leaders of the fashion industry, Premiere Vision 2015 has also become a special show stage for 18 Turkish companies who participated in the event under UTIB leadership.

The event is an important organization for the Turkish textile industry that leaps in the USA market in recent years.

UTIB gathered the industry leaders together in Istanbul Premiere Vision Istanbul Trade Fair was a truly success, 11-13 March 2015

P

remiere Vision Istanbul was held for the second time. Organized by the contributions of Uludag Textile Exporters Association, UTIB, with PV Istanbul Fair, the heart of fashion pulsed in Istanbul.

The fair, regarded as the most prestigious fabric fair in the world, convened textile professionals from all over the world, especially those from East Europe and Middle East, at CNR Expo fair ground. Major textile companies from Bursa have also participated in the event.

As usual, UTIB has supported its member companies in their activities to further their effort in international markets. Held for the first time last year PV Istanbul Fair has 500 million dollars of trade volume for textile industry. Second edition is rising the expectations. Held in only one hall last year, the fair is organized in two halls this year, a sign of its growth. 7,136 visitors and participating Turkish companies have

left the event with satisfaction.

There were exhibitors from Austria, Bulgaria, France, Germany, England, Hong Kong, India, Italy, Lithuania, Morocco, Pakistan, Portugal and the USA. New sources for inspirations and trends for the year are introduced in the fair, where choices for 2015-16 Fall and Winter seasons were made. Special dresses of hostesses in the event were designed

by famous Turkish designer Arzu Kaprol.

Première Vision Paris, the global event for fashion professionals

U

ludag Textile Exporters Association (UTIB) attended Premiere Vision Paris, one of the most prestigious fairs of the world.

UTIB presented the present situation of the Turkish textile and fashion to the world through its own publication Turkish Fashion Fabrics (TFF) at the fair which was held at parc d’expositions Paris Nord, February 10-12, 2015.

On 12 February, an overall feeling of optimism and a very positive business climate prevailed as Première Vision Paris closed its doors on its first fully integrated edition. After three days of

strong business, fruitful meetings and professional exchanges, the consensus was unanimous: with its broad and international offer, consistent creative richness and constant capacity for innovation and renewal, the show at the Parc des Expositions de Paris Nord Villepinte was truly a unique and unprecedented event, earning once again the strong support of the global fashion industry.

EV & STIL (Home&Style) Fair in Bursa Bursa chamber of industry and trade (BTSO) and Tüyap Bursa cooperated to organize “Home & Style” fair in Bursa, May 28-31, 2015. UTIB will support the event and Contract Business magazine will efficiently be distributed at the show.

ursa Chamber of Industry and Trade (BTSO) is going to lead for “Home & Textile Fair”, one of the most important activities from 28th to 31st of May 2015 within “Bursa Innovation and Design Meetings”.

Chairman of BTSO İbrahim Burkay said, “This fair will be the first home & style fair held in Turkey and added, “Bursa will be the center of home fashion.”

All kinds of home objects from home textile to furniture, lightening to glassware, sanitary ware to bath and garden equipment will be available in this particular fair which is first in its field. Fair starts out with a motto; “Every object to turn dream homes into reality would be in this fair.”

Many local and foreign designers, craftsmen would perform various live shows and academic presentations during the fair.

More than 2700 luxury hotels to be opened in the world in 2015 N

umber of new hotels in the world is keeping its high pace in 2015. More than 2,700 four or five star hotels are expected to be operational this year, despite economic slowdown prevailing all over the world, according to the data of Tophotelprojects, a German based research body about hotel investments.

Prospective hotels are seemed to be concentrated in the Asian continent, an area that became a locomotive destination for the travel industry. Asia tops at the new hotels list for the year with about 900 hotels. The USA follows the leader with 632 new hotels, which is followed by Germany with 235, China with 231 and India with 103 new hotels.

Increased abrasion resistance of textile coatings using effect pigments I

ncreased abrasion resistance of textile coatings using effect pigments In this article written by Sander De Vrieze, Guy Buyle, Myriam Vanneste UV-curable coatings are evaluated with respect to abrasion resistance, a crucial property in many textile applications like upholstery fabrics.

Incorporation of effect pigments into the textile coating results into a pronounced improvement of abrasion which can be explained by a strong alignment of the pigments in the coating layer.

Textile coatings are being used in various textile applications such as outdoor, protective clothing, medical textiles, interior textiles, etc. In general the coatings are thermally cured using an oven with an increasing temperature profile.

Extensive research showed that UVcurable coatings, normally used for coating rigid surfaces such as wood, can also be used for textiles. However a direct take-over of coating formulations is not possible. Rather, one needs to make a specific textile formulation by carefully selecting the components of the formulation.

In the past effect pigments were mainly used to impart color to materials. Various natural pigment materials exist, based on an array of different metals such as chromium, copper, titanium. Synthesized pigments are used as well. First use of effect pigments was to obtain 28

visual effects. However, recently other effects could be attributed to these pigments such as conductivity, higher abrasion resistance, flame retardancy, barrier properties due to their nature and shape (~flakes). A lot of research nowadays focuses on these types of functionalities.

In this article the effect of the incorporation of effect pigments into textile coatings on the abrasion resistance is examined. Therefore, the pigments were added to a waterbased and a 100% UV curable coating. The distribution of the pigments in the textile coating was evaluated and correlated with the effect obtained.

A clear effect is seen of the type and the amount of effect pigment

added to the coating formulation: the weight loss clearly decreases with increasing concentration of pigment.

The type of pigment defines the extent of abrasion improvement.

Via optical microscopy the distribution of pigments in the coating is clearly visible (shown in figure below).

Similar as before all pigments lead to a pronounced decrease in weight loss but the effect is already strong at low concentrations. The weight loss further decreases as the concentration of the pigment is further increased The water-based and the 100% system both show a similar mechanism. This was clearly seen in the microscopic photographs of the cross section of the textile coatings.

In the vicinity of the textile fabric the pigments are following the shape of the fibers. At the surface of the coating, however, the pigments are aligned with the surface which reduces the impact of the Martindale abrasion on the coating. This change in orientation of the flakes can be seen in the figure below.

In conclusion the abrasion resistance of textile coatings can be considerably improved by the addition of pigments into UV curable coatings, be it a water-based or a 100% system. The effect could be explained by a good alignment of the pigments with the coating surface. The strongly decreased wear of the coatings opens perspectives for its use in various applications, for example upholstery fabrics.

Turkish show in Paris, the heart of fashion Held in Paris, on 9 to 12 February 2015 the 24th edition of Texworld Paris 2015, the international trade fair for fabrics, trims and accessories, was a venue for shows for 86 Turkish companies.

he participation of the Turkish firms in the trade fair was organized

by Uludag Textile Exporters Association under the concept of “Turkey, Where Fashion Meets Fabrics” and “Turkish Fashion Fabrics” brand. The aim of the Association is to promote Turkish fabrics and textile industries to the 30

world, to bolster the brand image of Turkish firms, to increase their share in export markets, to carry out strategic market studies. The booth covering Turkish companies was among the largest in the fair as glamorous as the image of Turkish companies.

Turkey was the second largest participant in the event after Chinese.

297, from Turkey 86, South Korea 69, India 51, Pakistan 31, Taiwan 25 and Thailand 22 companies. 13,639 people from 111 countries visited the fair.

About 600 fabrics manufacturers from 27 countries exhibited a broad range of products including cotton, denim, embroidery, lace, functional fabrics, knitted fabrics, linen, hemp, prints, shirting, silk, wool and wool blends.

The show was marked by a revelation of its leitmotif “Presence” and its trends for summer 2016, designer fashion shows and effervescent

exhibitors’ stands. The trade fair saw a slight year-on-year increase, welcoming 13,639 visitors.

Michael Scherpe, the CEO Messe Frankfurt France, expressed his satisfaction stating, “This 1% increase represents encouraging stability. I am delighted at the stronger French presence, but I note that there was a marked, foreseeable decline in visitors from Russia. It was a successful show, as the exhibitors met their usual purchasers and generated highly satisfactory volumes of orders. The only significant fluctuations noted were the increase in French and

British visitors. We are delighted that we were able to combine a creative, competitive range which meets the demands of international brands coming to Paris in full In terms of the number of new exhibitors, there has been no change in the top three since the February 2014 event. China is still in the lead, with Turkey holding on to second place, followed by South Korea.

India comes fourth. Turkey remains in second place as a country ranked by number of exhibitors, borne up by the quality of its offer and by strong demand for sourcing close to home.

Designs of Kutoglu were emphasizing on figures and inspirations from Turkish culture and ultramodern Ottoman styles and minimalism.

How long has Elemegi been active?

Officially it was founded in 2004, however, my academic work life has a longer past than that. While producing house furniture and kitchens and selling them we decided

to expand our field of activities to bigger projects in abroad.

Following the revisions we made in our production facilities and personnel, we got serious works in Russia and Azerbaijan.

Owned by Robert De Niro, Nobu Restaurant project was made. 2 concept shops of Bvlgari brand were made on turnkey basis, besides other projects that were completed on time including Dior, Celine, Casadei and Tiffany.

One of the largest shopping malls, Vegas 1 and Vegas 2 has been made partly by us as project management, some of the wood and metal works.

The university campus project on 1.5 million sqm. land in Vladivostok, Russia where

APEC summit was held is our largest project we have managed.

We have assumed many important projects in the country including Radisson Blu Pera hotel, Marriott Sisli hotel, Rixos Tekirova hotel, Fethiye Lykia world, Kusadasi, Ramada hotel, Inera Hotel, Dedeman Bostanci hotel, Rixos Myria Yalta hotel, Wyndham Grand Istanbul Levent hotel, Adana Divan hotel, Florya Crown Plaza hotle, Hilton Garden Inn Izmir hotel.

At the same time, we completed stores and restaurants of some brands including Vakko Beymen, Starbucks, Gloria Jeans, Aqua Florya, Zorlu Center, Akasya Mall.

Will you provide info about activities of your firm?

70% of our production works is consists of hotels. Besides these, shopping malls, restaurants, and some special projects about manufacturing, design and project management works are carried out.

Exports accounts 60-70 % of our manufacturing. In line with our capacity, we aimed to increase it to 80 % in 2015.

Will you tell us about your manufacturing and design works?

Manufacturing is made in our factory of 10 thousand sqm in Bursa Org. Ind. Zone. We employ 370 people, 80 of them are white-collar workers. Metal processing workshop of 2 thousand sqm is recently built and now operational.

Recently, we signed a contract with Italian designer Slobodan Krivokapic, who designed Celik Palas and Montania hotels as our sub-contractor. He and his team, working in our Bursa factory, have increased our design power and they realized general designs of Hilton Garden Inn Izmir hotel.

Will you tell about your working process with investors and operators in the projects you engaged? Do you engage in the placement and space design works?

Products produced in our door line have certified by TSE-Kayseri laboratory as fire resistant doors.

Management of projects depends on the expectations of customers, our capacity of production etc. We can easily adapt of processes to the needs of our customer.

What kind of process is subject for your special and boutique manufacturing?

We approach our projects in two ways. 1- serial production and 2-

Other requirements for OHSAS 18001 and ISO 14001 standards are being documented and about in three months it is expected to be completed following official audits.

In 2014 we completed 68 projects, large or small. Some of them are, Rixos Myria Yalta hotel, Vakko shops, Beymen stores, Wyndham Grand Istanbul Levent hotel, Adana Divan hotel, Dedeman Bostanci, Lykia World hotel, Baku 61 restaurant, Minola store Italy, Carhatt London and Berlin, Gloria Jeans restaurant.

What projects are working on in 2015?

Presently, we are working on landscape design of 3 villas in Cengelkoy, Istanbul, for a Saudi prince, Turkmenistan project with Polimeks construction, Sekerbank headquarter project, Larapark Cyprus project, Etiler PS lounge, Florya Crown Plaza and Hilton Garden Inn Izmir projects. 2 hotel projects in Sudan and Saudi Arabia are about to be finished.

Egypt is getting a new gigantic pyramid skyscraper Named ‘Zayed Crystal Spark’, the project includes several large urban projects and a centrally positioned skyscraper inspired by Egypt’s most famous architectural shape.

Once completed, the towering structure will be the tallest in Egypt.

lans for a spectacular addition to the city’s skyline have been unveiled by Egypt’s Housing Minister Moustafa Madbouly and the shape of the new skyscraper will look very familiar - not only is the pyramid building borrowing from Ancient Egypt, at 200 meters (656ft) height, it will be taller than the Great Pyramid itself and the highest building in the country. The term is more than just an accurate description of the Zayed Crystal Spark. Those two words perfectly sum up the contrast the building embodies between modern and

ancient - a contrast that besets the entire country.

The new building will be the tallest in the country. The Great Pyramid of Giza, by comparison, is 481-feet high. The Zayed Crystal Spark will be a multi-purpose building located in the Sheikh Zayed district outside of Cairo. “It is an administrative, commercial and entertainment project as it includes buildings for various purposes,” Egypt’s Minister of Housing said. The project will be constructed over an area of 8.5 million square feet located on the main road and overlooking the July 26 road.

The last one of such designs is “Mobilike”, which Architect Gökalp has recently designed with a new approach to living places. Converted from an old textile factory Mobilike reinterprets a contemporary and dynamic working style with an industrial aesthetic understanding.

Dila Gökalp answered the questions of CB magazine:

First of all, who is Dila Gökalp? Could you brief us about yourself with milestones in your life?

I studied in Architecture and Urban and Regional Planning with double major program at Istanbul Technical University (ITU) and Politecnico di Milano.

I also hold a Master of Science in Architecture from ITU. Following the graduation, I gained international experiences at leading architectural offices in various countries including SpainBarcelona, Italy-Milano, and Japan-Tokyo. I also worked for some leading architectural offices

How long have you, as Dila Gökalp Architects, been working on projects?

Since 2009 we are working in the field of architecture and design.

DILA GOKALP ARCHITECTS – DGA functions as an ‘architectural design idea atelier’ in which main task varies from furniture to interior design, landscape design to architecture; multi-scale spaces are designed and projected.

Can you tell us some important titles about some of your projects? Are there any in foreign countries?

We have completed several interior design projects in Istanbul and also in Abu Dhabi. Office interiors and office buildings are our expertise. We have specialized on working spaces offices to industrial buildings mainly, therefore we have completed several building projects such as; Gebze Organize Sanayi Sitesi, Tuzla…

Can you outline your “Mobilike” project with regards to color, harmony, style, inspiration, etc? We are also keen to learn your material choices. Which brands have you used in the project as textiles, bedding, towels/bathrobes, marble, granite, etc.?

Mobilike project is based on the firm’s corporate identity; dynamic, innovative and playful. Almost all furniture and lighting designs belong to us. We like to design interior design details because they generate all conceptual look. Mobilike as a firm targets the young creative

segment, which is another reason why we wanted to use innovative materials like; polycarbonate, metal, copper and plywood‌

Which designers have you been influenced during your training period?

During my education I have examined several architects and designers including Rem Koolhaas, Tadao Ando, Zaha Hadid, Nevzat SayÄąn, Herzog de Meuron, Mimar Sinan, etc.

How do you evaluate Turkish architects and interior designers in comparison with the ones of other countries?

We definitely need to have more innovation in our designs as Turkish designers and architects. I think Turkish designers like to play safe in comparison to western colleagues.

Safe means guarantee outcomes, but innovation means progress in the design culture. And I think we need more progress in our Turkish design culture.

What advices would you like to offer for young talents as designers and architects?

Young talents should observe and experience their colleagues from abroad and they should learn their working disciplines and innovative progress. Thank you for your interest to our designs.

or the third time Trevira invited suppliers of Trevira CS fabrics to take part in a creativity competition, within the framework of the customer club concept. With its focus on especially innovative developments in Trevira CS, the competition gives each fabric manufacturer and supplier the opportunity to gain additional points – and also a claim to more services.

All entries are acknowledged. Some 100 fabrics were entered on this occasion and from these a panel of three experts selected 10 winning materials, along with 5 qualities that received special recognition. Criteria applied in classifying the entries were degree of innovation, technical execution, suitability for the contract and/or private market, and trend setting.

The center and IMOS services building were inaugurated by the participations of Huseyin Sahin, Bursa MP, Abdulkadir Karlik, deputy mayor of Bursa, Ali Akca, Inegol governor, Alinur Aktas, Inegol mayor, Metin Anil, chairman of trade and industry chamber, Ahmet Gulec, MOSFED chairman, Hasan Cepni, president of BEBKA, representatives of political parties, chambers, associations, industrialists, furniture companies and other guests.

project to build a new capital city for the Republic of Lebanon has been initiated and LBP 1.5 trillion ($1 billion) has already been pledged for the master plan and the acquisition of land, representatives of the Friends of Open Lebanese Society organization and Dar Arab Youth (DAY), an affiliate of the Arab Legacy League, said on the sidelines of a project preparation meeting held recently in Ankara.

Following Egypt’s plan for a new capital city, Lebanon has been another country to plan building a new capital city for the country with $1 billion already pledged for the master plan, according to representatives of DAY. The representatives revealed that the plan for the new Lebanese capital has been drafted by international economic committees and global political stakeholders partly due to the persistent lack of public transport and coastal preservation in the current capital Beirut.

“This, if allowed to continue, will make Beirut unsuitable for local politicians and foreign emissaries to live and work in. Instead of having them commute from cities abroad for occasional meetings and speeches, the international stakeholders have initiated the project for creating a new capital where all these dignitaries and officials can live together in a happy and productive environment,� said a DAY representative.

The project committee studied examples of successful capital relocation projects in Brazil, Nigeria, Lithuania and most recently, Egypt, and found that Lebanon has all the requirements for making such an enterprise succeed. The project will generate millions of job opportunities and unleash the underused utilization rate of funds in the Lebanese banking system, one representative of the Friends of Open Lebanese Society said.

The master plan of the new capital is planned to be generated as a fully green and LEED certified city with automatic collection and recycling of all wastes and will include new

presidential offices in the center.

Other elements will include a theme park on the history of the Middle East, touristic attractions, a convention center as well as an industrial free zone that will host start up companies with forward plans such as manufacturing super cars and space stations to construction artificial islands.

A time frame for the project has not been revealed however Jeremiah Bull, founder of the international stakeholder consultancy firm appointed for the project stated that his firm are currently inviting tender bids from Beirut-based public relations firms to develop and implement an awareness for the new capital.

The contrast between the textures of materials emphasizes different design lines of the furniture and objects, creating a plain, stunning and emotional style.

Representing an enlightened and positive mood Natural-style rooms get inspired by the nature. That is why colours are of earth-like, sunny, fair and pastel shades to highlight the daylight and illumination.

This inspiration by the nature is strengthened with choices of materials such as linens, natural animal skins and leather; a preference for the authentic and natural rather than the human-made. Which designers have you been influenced during your training period?

During our training minimalist movement was strongly appreciated.

Inspired by the ‘’less is more’’ philosophy we were impressed by the

prominent designers of the movement such as Le Corbusier and Mies van der Rohe. Over time in the business life we had the chance to work with designers such as Philippe Starck and Marcel Wanders, who blend original and sometimes maximalist style with minimalist knowledge, hence quite enjoyable and fairy-tale like designs.

In this process we were able to deduct and learn from experiences and successes of designers that influenced us.

How do you evaluate Turkish architects and interior designers in comparison with the ones of other countries?

Now it is the era of a young, dynamic, open-minded, enthusiastic, curious and self-confident generation that is eager to follow what is going on around the world. No matter in which part of the World you are, it takes a long while to come to forefront in the field of design. Maintaining the stability and sustainability of the success is another issue that matters.

You need not only strong skills but also knowledge. But it is not only that. You must make lots of visits and analyse the life. I believe young Turkish designers and architectures are good at this. They are able to

grasp novelties and create new ones by combining Middle-Eastern practical thinking with European based knowledge, systems and disciplines.

Yet creating a brand and keeping it stable for long years is another story that requires experience and diligence.

What advices would you like to offer for young talents as designers and architects?

As concerns design and architecture we would advise young talents to be curious about the cause and effects of anything and act investigative. In our point of view, design is a process and a product where the collective causeeffect relationship is defined. These are why all causes and reasons are the only thing to wonder about.

Anything would you like to highlight regarding your business?

If I were to reborn for several times I would choose to become an architect or designer. I could design fashionware, shoes or industrial goods. My 12 years of experience in architecture taught me nothing but the importance of feeling the pulse of life. We hope to survive long years that are full of good jobs and design and also fun.

Swiss plan for Europe’s tallest skyscraper in a town of 1000 inhabitants Hidden away some 4,000 feet up in the Swiss Alps, Vals, a town of just a population of 1000, will be the location for the tower measuring a proposed 1,250-feet (381 meters) in the air, 250ft higher than London’s shard.

witzerland, one of the top high-level living standard and developed countries of the world has been preparing to build the tallest skyscraper of Europe at a remote spa resort high in the Swiss Alps.

The proposed 1,250-feet high giant building would tower over London’s Shard, which measures a mere 1,000 feet, over Moscow towers Mercury City Tower of 1100-feet, South Tower of 1160-feet and Vostok Tower of 1224-feet.

Developers want to build it on the outskirts of Vals, a tiny spa town of just 1,000 people, nestled 4,000 feet up in the Swiss Alps.

The proposed tower will reportedly contain around 100 suites, with the cheapest priced at around 1,000 Swiss francs (almost 1000 USD) a night, and the most expensive at an eye-watering 25,000 Swiss francs.

With a breathtaking Alps view The project, which will reportedly cost around 200m Swiss francs (TL 540 million) has recently been officially unveiled in Zurich.

According to a report in Schweiz am Sonntag newspaper, the developers have chosen a plan by the prizewinning American architect, Thom Mayne.

The tower will rise from an extremely small base, measuring just 100 feet by 50 feet, and will have to anchor in the ground by unusually deep foundations.

The project is the brainchild of Remo Stoffel, the owner of the Vals spa, and Pius Truffer, a local quarry entrepreneur.

“I know we’re reaching for the stars.

We want to build one of the five best hotels in the world,” Mr Truffer told 20 Minuten newspaper.

The project still has to get planning permission before it can go ahead and there are some criticisms about the plan in local media as well as some architectural officials.

Under Switzerland’s system of direct democracy, it will be put to a vote of local citizens in the autumn.

tudio 13 has designed the conference rooms of the Turkey Center of Unilever in Ümraniye, Istanbul. Designed as interconnected to each other, three rooms can be used altogether or one by one.

Designed for a capacity of 270 people the conference room is of 350 sqm. Designed by Studio 13 the main theme of the design is voronoi diagram geometry but the scene, all wall and glass divisions, decorative panels, lectern, projection curtains and presentation screens have been designed with the same idea. Pointing out that they especially cared for colors, Deniz Yetkin, founder of Studio 13 said that they emphasized the dynamism sense of Unilever with the colors in designs.

Following is an interview with Deniz Yetkin about details of the project:

First of all, who is Deniz Yetkin? Could you brief us about yourself with milestones in your life?

Born in 1979 in İstanbul, Deniz Yetkin’s father was also an architect.

He grew up with an architecture vision since his childhood. He

decided to study architecture and started working while he was at university and opened his own company Studio 13 in 2009.

How long have you, as Studio 13, been building projects?

Leading creativity with its architectural perspective and designing internal spaces, Studio 13 creates timeless living areas with its designs and executions since 2009.

Founded by interior architect Deniz Yetkin, Studio 13 and its professional team designs and brings corporate and private projects to life from the inhabitant’s point of taste. Studio 13 develops personal and corporate tastes to transform them into contemporary and dynamic spaces in unity with modernity, prioritizes functionality and aesthetic as part of inhabitants life styles.

Keeping in mind that both corporate and private projects will be the beginning of new stories, Studio 13 acts as the main component of aesthetic and acts according to it.

Never underestimates the importance of sustainable aesthetic and knows that what turns living spaces into personal spaces are the special people who echo their personal taste to their 95

living spaces and play the main role in the creation and design of the projects.

Can you tell us some important titles about some of your projects? Are there any in foreign countries?

One of the best examples among Studio 13’s many projects is Unilever’s Algida factory. The factory is located in Konya/ Turkey and being a candidate Unilever’s globally first factory with environment friendly LEED certificate. .

By designing all the offices and social areas, Studio 13 has made a very efficient design for employees with a vision of environment friendly green office. Showing an example of quality construction and design standards of Unilever’s next factories, Algida Konya factory is very important for us to spread environment friendly factories.

In addition Studio 13, has renovated Unilever’s first ice cream factory at Çorlu in 2015. Studio 13 has designed whole offices, meeting rooms, conference room and social areas of 730 square meter factory.

Colors and figures were used as an important architectural element in the project which brings modern and dynamic style together with transparency.

Can you outline your “Unilever Turkey Headquarter” project with regards to color, harmony, style, inspiration, etc? We are also keen to learn your material choices. Which brands have you used in the project as textiles, bedding, towels/bathrobes, marble, granite, etc.?

The areas which are designed basically on 3 modules and also can be connected to each other, can be used 3 in one conference room. Designed

for the capacity of 270 people, the conference room’s total size is 350 m².

Studio 13 has used the diagram of voronoi geometry in its design basic.

The stage, walls and glass walls, decorative board, lectern, projection screens and presentation screens ae designed with the same geometric principle. The design’s color was another instrument to highlight Unilever’s dynamism and innovator part.

Studio 13 has choose Desso carpet, Nurus chairs and Persan fabric for the project. Other interior design materials and furnitures were produced as custom manufacturing.

Which designers have you been influenced during your training period?

After studying architecture, it isn’t possible not to be impressed Frank Lloyd Wright’s organic, environment friendly and humanist architecture.

Falling water, which is designed by him in 1930s, always evokes admiration on me. Mies Van der Rohe, Le Corbusier, Marcel Breuer, and Alvar Aalto are the others that we read with admiration.

What advices would you like to offer for young talents as designers and architects?

I would recommend always to be questioning, researching and to have the background to stand behind of their design and applications whatever they are impressed or which design they have used.

Anything would you like to highlight regarding your business?

For an architect, the more important thing beside design, is how architect puts on practice of his design.

Our business is very open for any mistakes but it is very important how you manage it. Customer satisfaction and honesty have a major role on this.

How do you evaluate Turkish architects and interior designers in comparison with the ones of other countries?

It is very clear that we are so far ahead on design, architectural equipment and the development of new materials and details. I believe in the polyphony in interior design as it is in many disciplines of art. On the other hand, cities should have souls and my dream is not to leave this

Yay is known with its circular lines and comfort as coaches, canopies, and chair alternatives.

Kut is designed by Tanju Ozelgin having modern lines and is best for home and office usage. It has a lean form and variety of alternatives.
